Harbaugh: “The Giants coaching staff’s sole purpose is to use their high visibility to both criticize and influence officiating.”

SANTA CLARA — On Thursday, New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said 49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith “gets away with murder” the way he holds offensive linemen and never gets flagged.

The 49ers’ just sent out Jim Harbaugh’s response, a statement he apparently made before Friday’s practice.

HARBAUGH: “Kevin Gilbride’s outrageous, irrational statement regarding Justin Smith’s play is, first, an absurd analogy. Second, it is an incendiary comment targeting one of the truly exemplary players in this league. It’s obvious that the Giants coaching staff’s sole purpose is to use their high visibility to both criticize and influence officiating.”

Harbaugh’s Friday press conference starts at 2:15.

    Sh#t Just Got Real.

As if we needed any more reason to be up for this game.

  2. rocket says:

Attaboy Jim, let him have it!

  3. east coast niner fan says:

I see no mercy out of Jim in this game. If we get up early i bet he keeps pouring it on.

  4. bginna says:

Such big talk from fans who have not seen an important victory in 18 years.

    • Bray says:

What big talk? That we like that fact the ‘our’ coach speaks truth?

    • Grumpy Guy says:

Oh IDK… that one where we sent the Giants home to mommy 10 years ago was pretty sweet.

      • bginna says:

Yeah, but not *meaningful.* You ended up winning nothing.

      • Grumpy Guy says:

Effing over those we despise can be its own reward.

Eliminating the Cowboys, Giants, Rams or Dodgers in baseball is sweet music to our ears.

Your turn again this year, baby. Watch our team beat your lines to a pulp and send your boys running home to mommy to have their snotty noses wiped again.

    • Adam707 says:

Maybe I’m mistaken but a playoff win is an important victory. Could be wrong.

    • Ed from AZ says:

This guy is a bginna, the rookie doesn’t even know we did have a playoff victory last year. Meanwhile, your team and it’s coaches are already whining (Cruz) and making excuses to why you might not win (Gilbride) and a coach who wants to pretend he’s the underdog (coughlin)

    • Chicago49er says:

lol, dude what are you talking about!!!!

  5. Houston 9er says:

Harbaugh is obviously right. I think he should say the Giants get away with murder going after players just like the Saints last year. After the game, there were several quotes from Giants players about going after KW because of his concussion issue. Also, they consistently tackled VD low apparently going after his ankles. Perhaps Harbaugh should bring that up and really flame the fire.

  6. Houston 9er says:

Or perhaps Harbaugh should call out the multitude of pick plays the Giants run every game. They are so blatant with it and it’s never called.

  7. bginna says:

    Grant,

Shouldn’t you be out looking for the actual proof behind the comments?

  8. old coach says:

look out eli your o coordinator just pissed off some 49ers with evil intentions. i’m predicting handshake gate #2. coughlin can be a giant red ass [no pun intended]

  9. Adam707 says:

What pisses me off about the statement is the giants coach discredits j smith. Making it sound like he is only great because he holds. You pissed off the wrong team

  10. Brodie2Washington says:

Harbaugh nailed it again. Gilbride’s comment was transparent manipulation. Even after the real refs returned, the Niners were subjected to false holding flags. It’s clearly Gilbride working the refs (and not showing confidence in his O-line).

The 49ers will be up for this game. So will I. To boast a bit… since the DTV switch, I’ve had to drive 6 miles into town to watch 49er games at a pizza place in Healdsburg. This week my brother scored 35 yard line tix to Sunday’s game. I’ll be there in bright red screamin my head off… redding out that NY blue (while still being civil to opposing team’s fans).

    Go Niners!

    • Brotha Tuna says:

      We’re counting on you, Brodie.

      • Brodie2Washington says:

I’m gonna bring it like it’s 1981. To get playoff tickets against the NY Giants and their new rookie phenom Lawrence Taylor (the game before “The Catch” game against the Cowboys), I camped in a 1968 VW bug for 3 days with my brother (a different sibling) and his friend. We forgot food and warm clothing (we raced from Santa Rosa to get in the car line in time), but were rescued by a guy who shared his 3 gallon jar of picked artichoke hearts with us.

We were horse for a week, but screamed NY off the field (with a little help from Montana, Lott, Reynolds and Dean). The chant was “we want Dallas… we want Dallas…” as we left soggy Candlestick.

  11. AES says:

Isn’t this the same blowhard loudmouth that old Buddy Ryan punched out on the sidelines?

Thanks for giving us a little more locker room motivational material (not that we will need any).

My dream-play of redemption: Kyle Williams returning a Punt/Kickoff for a TD!

    • undercenter says:

My dream-play of redemption: Kyle Williams returning a Punt/Kickoff for a TD!

      That would be way cool.

      • Neal says:

Last week he was just returning kick offs, don’t care about redemption, if Ginn returns one , that will be good enough for me, although Ginn looked like he still has rust.

  12. Hoferfan67 says:

JH responded because if he didn’t, I guarantee there would have been 2-3 key borderline penalties on JSmith because of the complaints by KGilbride. Why did KG feel the need to complain if he didn’t think that it just might help with this game? They’re already eating this little game banter up at NFL.com. Let’s see how the refs call this game…

    • Brotha Tuna says:

@ Hofe. I agree with your take. That’s probably why he used brash terms to be sure to get heard by the officials. Certainly I’m sure he was offended on Cowboy’s behalf, but its like a candidate needing to respond to a spurious claim by an opponent, just to not leave the claim hanging out there publicly.

    • niner61 says:

Works both ways Hof. Giants O-line better not be holding Justin if the refs are paying closer attention to him. Careful what you ask for KG, it just might backfire on you.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

61, I could see their OL holding JS and the refs call it as defensive holding. If the 9ers can consistently get to EManning, they will win this game. KG knows this.

  13. fesnyc says:

    who’s better than Harbaugh?

no-body. stepping up for his boys, and doing it big time. in a handshake or in any other match with rage-aholic Tom Coughlin, i take our man Harbaugh.

  14. Houston 9er says:

It’s really funny that the Giants coaches and fans are already setting up excuses for when they get their ass kicked. Gilbride better watch out. Didn’t he see what Harbaugh did to Schwartz last year. Harbs is going to go full Schiano on the Giants if Gilbride can’t keep his trap shut.

    • bginna says:

Oh, he smacked a coach on the back? Wow, watch out.

18 years and counting. Complete futility.

The pressure is on the 49ers to win this relatively meaningless game. We do not have to care. You do.

  15. Chicago49er says:

I find Mr. Gilbride’s comment about Justin Smith insulting and a simple maneuver to influence the officials! Mr. Gilbride, Justin Smith is a pro bowl player and a well respected individual in this league! You must have crossed your wires and confused Justin with the Detroit Lions defensive lineman! I have witnessed so many instances that Justin and Aldon were held and there was no call! I truly wish for niners and Justin Smith to have an amazing game against your team and bring us the 49er faithful another victory. GO NINERS

  16. east coast niner fan says:

Hey if smith can hold two 300 + lbs linemen one with each arm without them getting away he must be super man. all i gota say

  17. undercenter says:

To me it kind of shows that the Giants are looking for any edge that they can get. Kind of shows me they are not very secure in there ability to beat the Niners. yuppers

  18. Matt Subia says:

First Tom Coughlin and his “no one respects us” comments and now this. Reeks of desperation to me. You guys are the defending champs. That’s all the respect you need. Just because the Niners are favored to win doesn’t mean people are showing you disrespect. All Coughlin and Gilbride are doing is giving the Niners more motivation to win…

  19. Adam says:

The ironic fact that the O-line holds the D-line in an attempt to keep them from killing Eli seems to be missed on Gilbride? I’m lost. This must be one of the dumbest things ever said. The fact that a coach goes out of the way to bag on a player is pretty low class. Usually don’t see that kind of stuff.

Is Gilbride running for office in New York? Heard lot’s of BS in the debate last night, maybe it rubbed off on this guy.

I think Coughlin is an old, angry windbag. Now I’ve got another Giants coach I don’t like. Woot! Bring ‘em on.
