How to get Vernon Davis involved in 49ers offense

Vernon Davis, the most explosive player on the 49ers offense, caught zero passes in the 49ers 13-6 win over the Seahawks. Alex Smith didn’t throw it to him once.

After the game, Davis told the San Francisco Chronicle: “Nothing’s there. When I run my corner routes the cornerback is dropping to the corner. They are just taking stuff away, some of my explosive routes and stuff.”

Ironically, various 49er players were talking about how the Seahawks secondary and linebackers were taking away the wide outs. Alex Smith said Seattle was “doubling on the outside and really buzz[ing] out underneath the receivers.”

That should have made it easier for the 49ers to get the ball to Davis.

In fact, one of the reasons the Seahawks secondary and linebackers buzzed and sunk so aggressively with the Niners wide outs is because the Niners have gotten away from using Davis in the passing game.

There is no sense for an opponent’s defensive coordinator to scheme to cover somebody who is not getting the ball, and the Niners have made a pronounced effort to establish the wide outs as their primary receivers.

Frankly, it appears the 49ers do not have viable ideas about how to get Davis open if the coverage is taking away some of the base patterns the Niners have run with him the past two seasons.

They should realize it is more difficult for the opposing linebackers and defensive backs to zero in on him if he is going across the formation in continuous motion at the snap.

Also, the 49ers can have him run some “option,” “choice” and/or “read” routes where Davis can determine the coverage and adjust accordingly.

Additionally, they can align him outside or motion him outside the flanker (Z receiver) which also will give Alex Smith a good pre-snap read as to what the coverage will be: If the cornerback widens out on Davis, most likely it’s zone; but if the cornerback stays on the flanker and the strong safety or a linebacker adjusts out to Davis, chances are it will be some type of man coverage. Bill Walsh did this all the time.

Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman can do this, too. All it takes is a little creativity.

Grant I appreciate the shift of focus from Smith to the coaches for once. As much as people find Smith the easy reason to blame, its time to start a little criticism towards the coaching staff and their inability to use all their weopons at once as opposed to using Gore one week, Moss another, Crabtree another etc.
Its like the plan is this and they stick to it and dont deviate from it, even though its not working. Wht cant they have balance from week to week. Your telling me that Vernon Davis has not been open in two games? They cant find a simple hitch patern in their play book to get him freed up?

    • DS94everXev says:

      FDM

I am sure if you looked at the film VD was open sometime. He wasn’t shutout. But, it is very poassible he isn’t open often. That lost production needs to be made up somewhere. Like the WR’s. MM has been the best WR the past month, but was injured. Add to that the fact we know MC struggles against aggressive/big CB’s, the short week (hurts offense more than defense) a horrid ref crew who made the replacements look HOF like (that hit to AS helmet in particular and the holding all game long on our WR’s and that adds up to 2 teaming VD. VD not getting open.

  2. niner4life says:

Alex Smith did throw it to him and VD would’ve have picked up a 1st down but the refs didn’t call the face mask while he was throwing it.

  3. J-Dog says:

All it takes is a look at the Saints game last year during playoffs. VD can and does create mismatches in most secondaries. I am still baffled by they fact that we can stick 160 yards rushing against the #2 ranked run defense and post numbers like we did last week. Staying hopeful up here in El Dorado County.

  4. NINERS says:

Grant: what about screens to Davis? It seems like setting him up with TE screens or delayed middle screens would allow him to use his speed.

    • PFF says:

I’ve thought about this, but I think Davis is more fast than quick. His “explosiveness” is in running by people, not necessarily juking/making them miss. Not a bad idea to try out though. I loved the screen to Gore that picked up a FD on 3rd and 10.

  5. Stan says:

What other teams in the NFL cant get the ball to their best offensive player? Yesterday was a defensive win…the 49ers had how many consecutive 3 and outs? Getting predictable is not working.

  6. bayareafanatic says:

The room has a better smell to it with prime trash gone.

    • Prime Time says:

I will be back, don’t worry!

      • Nick says:

        Go away welcher

      • claude balls says:

        @ Nick:

jordan doesn’t like it when you call him welcher.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Prime

You still proved the point. Bay cared more for stats and whimped from the man offer. Which was Niners win with AS as the QB, bay goes away forever. And you likewise should we lose.

Did you hear JS say “stats suck”? So bays added criteria is something our best player, All-Pro at 2 positions, and leader says suck. What does that tell you about bay when a real football player and Niner says bays beloved stats suck!

        Priceless!!

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

      Bay,

Wait, i smell something that stinks of dog shi-! Prime is close!!!^^^^^^^^^^^

    • bayareafanatic says:

Claude you are a piece of work. Prime entered the room when he said he would stay away. Instead of calling him out you take a shot at 23J,
Prime was very insulting to me calling my boys team girls, when Grant deleted what he wrote, you followed up with Grant letting him know he was too quick to jump in.
You are quickly moving in the direction of becoming a scumbag to me. It’s not about the QB anymore. It can’t be, because our QB is failing to hold up his end. At this point mr. Cut and paste, it’s just about the argument for you. I used to think you were at the very least the type that would do and say the right thing. I was wrong…..
If there is a “welcher” today, it is Prime….

      • claude balls says:

        @ bay:

Prime entered the room when he said he would stay away. Instead of calling him out you take a shot at 23J

From what I saw, Prime posted a single comment saying that he would return. I would suggest that if he stays away the agreed upon number of days (starting from his 12:35 pm comment), then he will have honored the bet, but the bet was between you two, so it’s up to you two to decide on the terms of satisfaction. Even if his single comment is a technical violation, however, I hardly think a single comment compares to 23welcher’s daily, continual and defiant dishonoring of his promise never to post here again. In fact, I think the two are clearly very different, both qualitatively and quantitatively. If you cannot see the difference, then I don’t think I can explain it to you.

Prime was very insulting to me calling my boys team girls

Do you not see how hypocritical that complaint is? You have a long history of attempting to feminize those who disagree with you – calling them by girls’ names, intimating that they want to be Alex Smith’s girlfriends, etc. It’s one of your go-to moves; surely, you don’t deny that. Why on Earth should any of us sympathize when someone turns it around on you? I am not sure why he saw the need to drag the team into it, but you are the wrong person to argue that you were insulted by the feminizing of males.

My comment to Grant about having an itchy trigger finger was for his deletion of my comment calling you out for hypocrisy. It had nothing to do with his deletion of Prime’s comments.

You are quickly moving in the direction of becoming a scumbag to me.

Because I call you and jordan on your unapologetic, double standard b/s? Get used to it.

It’s not about the QB anymore. It can’t be, because our QB is failing to hold up his end.

Because you say so? Please excuse me if I don’t take your word for it.

I used to think you were at the very least the type that would do and say the right thing. I was wrong…..

When have I said or done the wrong thing?

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

        Bay,

Claude is the new Prime Time. He can’t find any stats to cut and paste to support his QB so it’s prime time. He s just as pathetic as prime. We’ll contiue to break these clowns with the help of Smiths horrendous play. W14-23 140 yards 1pick and 1TD and several missed receivers. I did it for you Prime Claude.
Now you don’t have to cut and paste. Just accept it. You were wrong, Smith is a Fraud, just like Claude. Cut and paste that!!!!

      • claude balls says:

        @23chicken:

        Brave Sir jordan ran away
        Bravely ran away away
When danger reared its ugly head
He bravely turned his tail and fled
Yes Brave Sir jordan turned about
        And gallantly he chickened out
        Bravely taking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat
Bravest of the brave Sir jordan

  7. Adam707 says:

This is a huge concern. He is the best play maker on our offense and he has been completely shut down in 3 of our games. To not even target him once in a full game is just bad football. Not saying it is Alexs fault, GR plays a huge role in it too. I saw him open once last night but he was the 1st read and initially covered but broke open late, in order to have got him the ball on that play smith would have had to make a double read (something hes not really capable of). I like the play call on the TD last night, when we used VD as basically a decoy, but VD has to get his hands on the ball.
I dont like how this offense will be good vs bad D’s and bad vs good D’s. In the playoffs we’ll be facing the best teams. The passing offense will need to make huge strides throughout the remainder of the season if we hope to even have a chance to win a SB, because we will not win with 150 yards and 1 TD.

  8. 49er42 says:

The bottom line is the coaches have to design plays to either get VD open, or to draw double coverage to allow someone else to get open.
Grant is correct about putting Vernon in motion. The 9ers used that alot with Rice to make it harder on the Defense to hold him up at the line.
Another approach is to overload one side with receivers and then put Moss and Davis out on one side forcing the defense to decide what side of the field they are going to slide the defense to.

  9. mark says:

grant–maybe you can find out why they dont run the seam route for vernon anymore…they had great success with it in 2009 and 2010…davis would just streak up the middle seam and smith would put the ball on target…

    • Adam707 says:

We still have it in the offense and run it but its more of a “clear out” route now. VD runs the seam and they drag MC or someone else under and throw it short, but it usually gets 10-15 yards.

    • bayareafanatic says:

      Mark,
that’s a good question. The VD seam would open WR crossing patterns. I believe they stick to patterns that they believe #11 can be successful with.

  10. mark says:

they would be smart next game to throw a pass or two to davis, even if it is a short screen or dump off, to keep his head in the game

btw vernon made a very effective block for d.walker on the td

  11. Fansince77 says:

The Hawks player a single hi safety who cheated over to Moss’s side. It seems like send VD in motion would be an easy thing to do. It’s amazing how this team still cannot get a good passing attack. I don’t want to pile on Alex, but now we’re starting to see that so called ceiling. It’s not his arm. That Russell Wilson dude has no arm but can sling it deep. It’s not his brain. He’s smart. He gets it. So it has to be his instincts for the game. You can’t teach pocket presence so he better develop something else. Because teams are going to put 8 in the box. Time to get Al Jenkins and that speed in the game.

  12. Adam707 says:

The one thing i did like about last nights game was designed throws to the RB. In the past we have had success throwing screens and other passes to the RB’s. Gore had 5 catches last night for 51 (half his season total) and most of those were designed. I’d like to see more of that as we move forward.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Adam707

Agree. With one minor change. I want most of those passes going to KH, not FG. FG is still the best in the NFL at hitting the hole and getting good yardage. But KH is much shiftier/quicker/faster than FG. And in the open field…better. Those RB passes would be a legit chance to go all the way with KH. Remember the Philly game?

  13. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

The way to get Vernon Davis involved in the offense is to get a QB in there with the heart and confidence, oh and let’s not forget the ability to make a throw into space. Not just when the game is on the line. Do you all remember Vernon Davis’s last catch as a 49er. It was last game and it was a 20 yard rope on the money from Kap. That was his last catch. Alex Smiths new target is Frank Gore. The CHECKDOWN!

    Alex Smith= captain discountdoublecheckdown!!!!!!!

Smith will finish the season with the niners “managing” games. Hopefully we continue to run the ball mixing in more of Hunter and some of Jacobs to keep Gore healthy because that is what wins us games.

I seem to remember AS thriving with VD throwing those seam routes that VD caught for a then TE record 13 tds. that was 3 years ago so its not the same problem we had for years its a fairly new one. There are also 5 national articles about JH decision to decline the safety costing gamblers 75 mil, so Whats ur point. Off sport sorry – Zito has a chance to earn that 126 million tonight. Giants just need “A” win vs Cards and then it’s back to S.F. for game 6 and hopefully game 7.
    In Zito I don’t trust.

  15. Coffee's for closers says:

Maybe I give the coaches too much credit but you definitely aren’t given them enough. These guys are smarter more informed and just frankly better at their jobs then you or any of are for that matter. You cant honestly expect to think that the reason Vernon Davis didn’t wasn’t more involved is because Harbaugh and Roman don’t know how to do it, that’s ridiculous.

How about less of a knee-jerk reaction to Davis having ONE quiet night this season. So far he’s averaging about 4 catches for 60 yards a game. He has one game that he’s blanked and we’re going to assume that it’s because the coaches don’t know how to use him? Come on.

  16. Chicago49er says:

Grant you are right on with your observation! I think the coaching staff is trying to get the wideouts involved so our passing game is more dynamic and defenses can not just focus on the TE! However in last nights game hawks defense was all over the recievers! In matter of fact they were hand checking and holding our players all night long and we did not see any flags! It appeared like the old replacement officials were back in action!!! Here is a summary of a few very bad and obvious calls or lack of calls:

pass interference on Rand Moss that would have given us a first down in the redzone but no call!

Alex Smith face mask, a 15 yard penalty and a first down but no call!

Veron David face mask and holding but no call!

Kevin William was held at least on two plays base on my film review and no call!

Walkers TD was called out of bounce but at least they reverse the call!

Jim Harbaughs challange for the first down spot that was too short and it was reversed!

However VD and Crab must be used more often specially Vernon!!!

  17. ttime says:

Doesn’t Alex have the ability to call an audible? I think that blaming the coaching for Alex’s lack of performance is ridiculous when they game plan based on his obvious limitations. He lacks accuracy, elusiveness, pocket presence, play making ability and often does not see the field very well. This team has multiple weapons but lacks a starting QB who can fully utilize them on a consistent basis. For all these weaknesses he does have strengths; he has consistently demonstrated courage and determination and I do believe that he has a very good understanding of the game and the offense. What I question is if those strengths out weight his apparent weaknesses to the point of depressing the development of a QB who may not have his apparent weaknesses.

JH has already demonstrated that PERFORMANCE is not all that important when it comes to quarterbacking this team when he cut JJ who had clearly outperformed Tolzein. Alex is 5-2 this season; but can we really conclude that his performance as a passer was a major contributor? Its no doubt in my mind that his ability to audible to running plays is a positive contribution and should be considered when making an assessment. On the other hand, what’s the use of possessing a premier TE if the QB does not even attempt to get him the ball? Why acquire Moss, Manningham and use your first round pick on a WR if your starting QB’s strongest attribute is his ability to audible out of a pass play to a run? I wonder, if CK and Alex were at their current stages in their careers and had joined any team but the 49ers, would Alex still be starting over CK?

  18. old coach says:

matt barrows has an interesting piece on his blog about smiths performance. his view is the same as mine. smiths int was a horrible throw but other than a couple of deep shots he missed on there werent many receivers who were open. i do’nt believe it was the receivers fault they werent open i think the refs did a horrible job calling illegal contact on seattles db’s. i felt smith had a poor game mostly because of the int but i did’nt see the terrible performance that a few are writing about here

    • claude balls says:

      @ old coach:

but i did’nt see the terrible performance that a few are writing about here

Perhaps that’s because it didn’t happen.

      • old coach says:

thats one possibilty or maybe i just do’nt know what i’m talking about. i had a couple of players tell me that over the years.

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

        Claude,

You’ve never seen your boyfriend Alex have a bad game. You are a sad little guy. alex was great last night. That’s why the crowd was booing his azz. He got outplayed by a rookie. If not for the dropped passes, we lose that Game. Thank god for FG. Like Smith said, he liked handing off. Passing, not so much! Lol

      • undercenter says:

I too was wondering where the poor performance was. Wasnt great by any strectch of the imagination but certainly wasnt as bad as some claim.

      • claude balls says:

        @undercenter:

You have to consider the source(s) of those claims. They’ve been wrong so often, they can’t stop being wrong.

      • Axel Foley says:

Got outplayed by a rookie, What? No QB wants to face those two defenses. Of course the QB’s weere not lighting it up, they were facing two top 5 defenses.

Im not sure what game you were watching 23jordan/I told you so. You are not very accurate in any of your assessments today regarding last nights game.

      • rocket says:

Jordan likes anybody as long as it’s not Smith. That’s what it’s come too for him.

      • claude balls says:

        @ rocket:

That’s what it’s come to? That’s what it’s been since he made his first absolute declarative statement that Smith can never win. Any budging from the absolutist position would require him to admit he was wrong, and you know his ego is too fragile for that.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Rocket, he’s been wrong so many times he just wants to be right once. I’ve been looking at some of the plays they run during the QB shuffle and they haven’t been that productive. If JH didn’t like anyone throwing AS under the bus, they’ve sure done exactly that with these QB shuffle calls especially replacing AS on 1st and 10. AS is definitely feeling the heat and it’s affected his game.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @undercenter

“I too was wondering where the poor performance was.”

That is why I was questioning Grant’s grade of a “C-” turned to a “D” on here.

There were 2 times in the game where I thought we didn’t come away with points when we should have:

        1. End of the first half. When AS missed an open WR because he was looking thru the ear hole of his helmet when the DL hit him and wasn’t called for a 15 yard penalty.

        2. His Int. Which miraculously followed him getting pulled from the game (I think 2 of his Int’s happened after CK was put into the game). The decision was good, the pass was poor.

So those two plays or drives ignores all the rest of the stuff he did on the line changing plays to get the better result and everything else. Not for me. AS without an Int gets a “B”. The Int pulls him down to a “C” after considering everything else.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      OC,

Thanks for pointing out the MB piece. My feeling is that AS isn’t liking the QB shuffle but is playing the team player role. I don’t know if any starting QB would like to be replaced during the game. If they are giving CK time to ultimately replace AS or because GR’s play calls are poor is unknown, but AS is feeling it!

    • rocket says:

      Old Coach,

You are never going to get a middle of the road answer on Alex Smith. It’s either he had the best game of his career, or he sucked and needs to be thrown out of SF. It’s become impossible to hold a meaningful discussion on him because the hyperbole blows it right out of proportion. What’s really funny in an ironic way, about the comments on here lambasting Alex Smith today, is that the Seahawks were playing to stop the pass all night. They had their Safeties back and the LB’s dropping deep the entire game.

Smith threw some bad passes on the deep route to KW and the int, but other than that he took what the defense gave him which if you read the reports, watched Mayock show the all 22 and listen to the players, were the dump offs in front of the LB’s. It’s also why he kept checking to running plays at the LOS. It really didn’t make any sense for them to continue playing deep coverage when they were getting repeatedly gashed by the Niner running game, but they didn’t stray from it. It was a lot like the Giants played them last week. Teams are taking away the deep and intermediate passing game for whatever reason which leaves the running game facing a 5-6 man box at times. Problem is Roman seems to get antsy and starts forcing calls that aren’t there and the past two weeks Smith has forced throws he normally wouldn’t make. I think teams are starting to notice that the Niners are trying to open up the passing game and are playing them to do just that.

If the Niners continue to see this, they have to be patient and keeping running against it. Eventually it’ll loosen up, but in the Giant game and for the first half last night, they were playing right into it by trying to run the 5 step drops, instead of throwing the short dumpoffs in the middle that gained 6-8 yards every time. They finally caught on at the half and moved the ball well in the second half doing just that.

I think this is why the offense has looked so off kilter the past couple of weeks. Teams are letting them run the ball and filling the passing lanes. It’s something they didn’t see much at all last year and the Giants and Seahawks have now done it in back to back weeks. They will see it again in Arizona so they’d better start practicing the RB and WR screens, and get ready for a 60-40 run to pass ratio, because that is what it’s going to take to get teams out of this.

    • DS94everXev says:

You mean the fans at the game were wrong? Get out of here. lol

  19. Hoferfan67 says:

GR needs to devise plays to get VD open. BW had to get creative when teams tried to take JR out of the game. Thus far the poll has GR rated as a C. That’s about right.

    • undercenter says:

C – thats what I gave him, I havnt been too thrilled about the play calls all year long. Sometimes he gets in a groove like that TD drive in the third quarter. It was a beautiful example of the WCO at its best. It was the best drive of the year.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

C for a total and complete lack of Consistency

    • Adam says:

      You guys are tough. :P

      I gave him a B.

      • Msclemons67 says:

        1st half F
        2nd half C

13 points is a bad performance by any offense. Roman is the man in charge of the offense.

  20. Islandguy49ers says:

    Russel Wilson 9-23 122yrds INT
Alex Smith 14-23 140yrds TD, INT

Is Alex Smith elite. NO. Would I chose Russel Wilson or any back up quarterback over him to fit this system. Ummm no. We didn’t get Peyton Manning so based on the options out there, I will roll with Alex Smith and the 5-2 niners. I know people are tired of mediocrity but given the options I choose a middle of the pack QB who sometimes has good games over Colin Kap who hasnt shown much better judgement with his throws when he has got in the game. A dropped INT he threw a few games back. Why risk what you have UNLESS you know what you are getting. So GO NINERS and any player that steps on the field with the 49ers jersey on. I will be rooting for you. Until that day that the next QB whomever it be, is ready to take the reins.

    • Adam says:

Actually I wouldn’t sleep on Wilson. If the Seahawks can get their receivers to catch some balls, they will be dangerous.

      That kid has instincts.

    • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

Russel Wilson clearly outplayed Smith last night . 6 dropped passes( including 2 touchdowns) we lose that ge if his recovers catch the ball. Your numbers don’t tell the real story but ill take the win. Thank god our defense was better than theirs. Thanks Frank Gore.

    • claude balls says:

So GO NINERS and any player that steps on the field with the 49ers jersey on. I will be rooting for you.

This. The commenters who claim to be the REAL fans could take a lesson from this.

      • Msclemons67 says:

You are correct. After all, the “real” fans cheered for Keame Harris, Chilo Rachel, Taylor Mays, Kentwan Balmer, etc. etc. No “real” fan ever thought those guys should be replaced. No “real” fan ever demanded the Shaun Hill be benched when he was winning games.

“Real” fans accept whatever mediocrity the team trots out onto the field.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Clem, we rooted for them they just didn’t make the cut! That was on the coaches who either traded them or released them.

      • claude balls says:

        @Msclemons:

        (1) I still cheered for those guys. (Well, maybe not Balmer; that guy just didn’t seem to give a damn.) There’s a big difference in believing that a player should be replaced by someone better and actively rooting against a player.

        (2) The 49ers haven’t been mediocre since Singletary left. Neither has Smith.

      • Msclemons67 says:

@Claude rooting against a player on the team is bad mojo, no doubt.

Not believing in the Precious doesn’t equate to rooting against him. In fact, it’s the logical position based on his years of history. To me, placing faith in excuses is just weird.

I don’t have much faith in Goldson or Crabtree either. I’m not a “real” fan I guess.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Clem, I like both DG and MC. They have had their good and bad games. I’ve criticized them similar to AS last night. You have to flush bad games and play. They’ll get better.

      • Msclemons67 says:

@Hofer Goldson is boom or bust. He’ll make the occasional great play but he also gives up a lot of big plays. Crabtree is a massive disappointment. He should have been a 4th round pick.

Getting better is supposed to happen in the 1st 3 years. Not after 5, 6 or 7 years.

      • BOS9er says:

        Lemons
I dont recall anyone calling u out as not being a “real fan” What I consider “not a real fan” are those that root for the team to loose or play poorly just so that they can go out and say “i told u” and “he is who I said he was”. The ones that take more satisfaction in being “right” than the 49ers winning. U can spot these “fans” after wins by our team either diminishing certain performances by dismissing them having come vs “JV” teams or after our team looses they seem to come alive with vigor and energy and tell all of us “BWAHAHA I TOLD U SO, I WAS RIGHT”
Id rather be “wrong” but the 9ers win than be “right” and the 9ers loose.
As for not having faith in players on our team, that is ur god given right as a fan. Its fine to hope and strive for perfection and to nitpick little things after a win that the team can do better, but its unreasonable to expect elite players at every position.
I happen to agree with U about MC and DG (but hope im wrong and they develop in to all pros :)

  21. 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

The Smith defense unit is out in full force today after Alex’s great performance last night. The list of Alexcuses grows like Brian Wilson’s beard. I think we can remove the top 10 label from his name on Monday morning. The cream always rises to the top! 14-23 for 140 yards last night 1 TD 1 int, 2 missed touchdowns and several missed receivers. As in, I never saw him open!
You won’t have to defend him forechecking longer. Good thing we have a defense and special teams. Those type performances from Smith lose games. They don’t win them.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

The fans that support the team acknowledged last night that AS didn’t play well. No need for a beat down. The 9ers came away with a win. There are peaks in valleys during an NFL season – EManning and the NYG’s lost 7 games before winning the SB. There are 9 games left and plenty of time to still get better. Good times.

      • Axel Foley says:

Team win. They dont as how, they ask how many.

      • Msclemons67 says:

Hofer, you didn’t support the team when Hill was starting. You and oneniner demanded he be benched on a daily basis when he was winning games and Alex was riding pine.

It’s a bit hypocritical of you to phrase true fandom as supporting the Precious. Not everyone has a soft spot for slow learners.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Clem, I liked SHill. He was throwing everything underneath. Similar to AS now. I’m not happy with the underneath stuff and they did a better job against the Bills. Regarding AS, he played poorly, he’s not using his finger as an excuse, the QB shuffle isn’t producing, and it will get better or he’s gone!

      • claude balls says:

Not everyone has a soft spot for slow learners.

Then again, some us can recognize when the teachers are incompetent.

      • Msclemons67 says:

@Claude; Harbaugh, Roman and Cryst are incompetent? The precious has had over a year in their system and he still looks like Alex.

At this point I might not argue about Roman. He’s supposed to know the strengths and weaknesses of his players and plan accordingly. Pass happy game plans with Alex are simply stupid.

      • claude balls says:

        @Msclemons:

And that’s where understandable skepticism turns into stubborn close-mindedness.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Clem, it’s only a third of a season. You are commenting like he’s had a full two years with these coaches! Do you really think CK is ready to take over? We’ll see more passing and running. Stay tuned…

      • Msclemons67 says:

@claude come on now, I think back-to-back debacles deserves a little stubbornness.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Msclemons:

Only the stubborn would view a victory as a “debacle.”

    • claude balls says:

      Really Grant?

So much for your alleged objectivity.

      • DS94everXev says:

        claude

Which post are you replying to? Are you saying Grant is 23?

      • Grant Cohn says:

Don’t curse in comments. I have to delete those. If you misspell the curse word I still have to trash it.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Grant, my apologies for last night. It won’t happen again. I was upset with the SF Giants losing.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Grant:

Seriously? You don’t enforce that rule with any consistency.

      • Grant Cohn says:

I do my best. I’m not policing this blog every second. Show me a comment with a curse word and I’ll delete it.

      • claude balls says:

And wouldn’t it be preferable just to excise the offensive misspelling rather than delete the entire comment?

      • Grant Cohn says:

        You excise the offensive spelling.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Grant:

I have no interest in seeing a comment deleted merely because it contains a curse word. I also am not a big fan of informers and don’t wish to be one.

I don’t follow your “You excise the offensive spelling’ comment. Does that mean, you can excise the offensive portion of a comment rather than deleting the entire comment?

      • Grant Cohn says:

It means if you want your comment to show up, proof read it and make sure there are no curse words. That’s not my job. I’ll just trash them if I see them.

      • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

        Fraude,

Just keep it clean while your trying to insult people in your efforts to protect you boyfriend. Comprende’ ? Lol.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Nobody cares!

      • claude balls says:

        @ Grant:

Rules is rules. I’ll adapt. I’m just saying that your enforcement efforts do not always appear to be even-handed.

      • Grant Cohn says:

I apologize if that’s the case. I try my best be even-handed and get them all.

      • DS94everXev says:

How is cussing worse than name-calling Grant? You hear cussing all the time at family affairs. Never name-calling though.

      • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

        Fraude,

Let me call you a waaaaambulance! Obey the rules you crying snitch!!! Don’t cut and paste any cuss words!! Get it!! Lol.

      • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

        BS,

Are you crying and snitching too? You Smithers are killing the energy of the blog. What’s up with that BS illicious??? These next 10 days are going to be priceless!

  22. Monte says:

Yeah right……..Roman and Harbaugh couldn’t figure out how to use tight ends at Stanford either…all four of them!

  23. Razoreater says:

The Officials raped the 49ers in this game. Phantom calls as well as obvious no calls. I thought we were watching the replacements.

  24. Big Niner says:

A way to open up VD is to line him up in the back field and then put him in motion. What ever happened to the pre snap shifting, that had the defense scuffling trying to figure things out?
Where are the 3 TE bunch formations? imagine what you could do with that line up? you could audible to a run with serious blocking or have 3 beasts scaring there secondary.

  25. Msclemons67 says:

I hope the coaches don’t react to this by trying to force feed Vernon. When the team has tried to go pass first this year they have failed miserably.

Stick to what worked last year. Run it down their throats and take shots with limited read play-action passes. Keep the passing game limited to Smith’s strengths. It’s boring but 1960′s football works better for the 49ers than trying to be a modern team.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Clem, yes it’s boring I admit, but QBs with 300/400 yds passing have been losing this year. I think AS will turn it around. Plenty of time for the 9ers to get better.

      • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

        Hofer,

Of course you think Smith will. I don’t. When is he going to turn it around. He’s on his way to being worse than last year. Stats look the same except for interceptions. Looks like 20 TD’s and 12 picks. Pretty sad with all the new toys huh?? I say if we let Smith continue, only let him check down. It’s safer that way. I say 80-20 run. Let the game manager manage. Hopefully Kap gets a start soon. He meased up Smiths rhythm on that one running play he had.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, nobody cares what you write or comment. You’ve never been correct and it really doesn’t matter. So go to template #12 and post you next *new* anti-0er QB comment. Off you go…

      • Axel Foley says:

Justin Smith said stats are for losers.

      • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

        Ok,

Thanks Hofer, from now on ill do that. I’d like to also make a donation to the Alex Smith protection agency. I hear that your the CEO! Lol.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jordo, good try! Just a fan of the QB and the team. Why don’t you support the whole team??

      • claude balls says:

        @23coward:

Better yet, you could man up and answer the questions.

        Brave Sir jordan ran away
        Bravely ran away away
When danger reared its ugly head
He bravely turned his tail and fled
Yes Brave Sir jordan turned about
        And gallantly he chickened out
        Bravely taking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat
Bravest of the brave Sir jordan

      • 23Jordan/ NO MORE GAME MANAGERS !! says:

        Claude,

Is that poetry? I like it. How do I cut and paste that prime?

      • claude balls says:

        @23welcher

Nope, just an ode to your gutlessness.

  26. whatthe says:

This is why David Shaw was the passing game coordinator at Stanford and Greg Roman was running game coordinator.

Seattle has a good d, but the 9ers should have been checking down earlier.

Season after season, Craig and Rathman racked up catches and moved the chains.
