Jim Harbaugh, Alex Smith and funk-jive turkey gobblers

There’s been a lot of discussion around here the past few weeks about whether Alex Smith has lost confidence as a result of Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman mixing backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick into games.

Against the Cardinals Monday night, Kaepernick did not play, and Smith happened to play one of the best games of his career. After the game, Jim Harbaugh was asked if he ever felt Smith’s confidence had been damaged. Here’s what Harbaugh said:

“I think it’s just a lot of gobble, gobble, turkey. Just gobble, gobble, funk-jive turkey gobblers. That paints a pretty good picture. He’s a very confident guy.”

Did it help Smith against the Cardinals that Kaepernick didn’t play for a change?

“No. More gobble, gobble.”

Do you agree with Harbaugh? Why or why not?

  1. DClark says:

It’s obvious that he is making reference to the fact that it’s reporters that drive and maintain these issues, (after all the have a job to protect don’t they!) and that within the organisation Alex Smith has the full and unconditional support of everyone involved.

We all whine about Jim giving bland answers and swerving questions, but imagine how it feels from his perspective to be asked really bland obvious questions, and questions to which the answers would reveal strategic information! It’s on this point that I feel you might be a shining light Grant, a while back you asked us, your readers for questions to ask Jim, we/they responded, you were true to your word and got some nice answers. Please can we see this as a regular thing? There are posters here who have some genuinely intelligent and pertinent questions, And lets be honest the stale stench coming from the press conferences could do with a blast of fresh air!!

Let us on this blog be the ones to provide it!!

    • Willie niner says:

      Well said DClark….

    • Mr. Automatic says:

I was almost fooled, but I know this isn’t “the” Dwight Clark; there was no mention of our SS “Donte Whitmore” in the post! haha Whatever Dwight is drinking before the post-game show, make mine a double.

      • MidWestNiner says:

His recognition on one pass play was stellar. I thought the secondary left a guy wide open, then the next thing I see is Whintner steamrolling towards that WR and tackling him as he caught the ball. It looked like Whitner transversed ten yards in that play.

      • DClark says:

Yeah sorry Mr Automatic, I’m just Dave Clark although Dwight was the reason I became a 49ers fan back in the early 80′s.

  2. DS94everXev says:

    Grant

Nobody who mattered talked about AS losing confidence. Only the media and fans did. Last I checked, they have little to no outcome on games, wins, confidence.

    Players and coaches do.

    • Ed from AZ says:

+1 If some of the people on this blog got to ask the questions, they’d come up with the same bland ones that Sports Illustrated is worried about (i.e. Smith’s confidence, lack of deep ball)

I will say that the only thing that the 49ers should focus on moving forward is stalling drives on defense against teams that are able to move the ball. AZ was unable to move the ball, hence their D stayed on the field longer. SF will be just fine though and will be in the playoffs come January.

  3. alexsmith4mvp says:

I would like to know why they couldnt let Alex throw one more screen pass while trying to run the clock out to get his record. I know after the game Alex said they werent aware but come on, how many times during a game that a qb is approaching a record are the team and coaches not aware? I mean really whats the difference in handing gore/hunter the ball and throwing it to them in space out of the backfield? Probably could have picked up a first down with the throw in space and never had to put the D back on the field.

  4. DS94everXev says:

    Grant

JH kept AS in to prove a point, and end any stupid speculation once and for all. AS is the QB. He was to start the year, and he will be to end the year.

Even with a 24, 21 point lead, CK didn’t take a single snap. That means it is over. CK may get some more playing time next game after we make the opponent submit, but make no mistake. AS is the starter. And JH is 19-5 with him as the starter.

As I heard somebody on TV more or less say “No, you don’t take out AS. He’s 19-5!”

    • Mr. Automatic says:

I don’t think they’re done inserting CK, DS – it’s still on film and he’s still a threat, I’m assuming they felt like they just didn’t “need” him last night, imho.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Automatic/Ed

Remember last year after the Staley catch (which worked) everybody said that other teams will have to look for that, especially come playoff time? Well, playoffs came and we didn’t do that play.

You stick to what you’re best at when it matters. Fun plays like the Staley catch and CK thing are fun if we are winning/win the game. If not, they disrupt the team and AS.

I don’t know how much more of a sign you need than the Seattle game. AS is moving the team fine. CK comes in for 1 play. Loses 2 yards and nearly got killed. AS comes back in and..throws an Int. That was the end of the CK thing while the games result is still in question.

    • Ed Luva says:

I don’t think it means they’re done using Kaepernick either. That said, the coaches, front office and team have never made any indication that the starter is and will be anyone other than Alex Smith. As Ratto just wrote, pulling Alex from the starting role at 20-6 since last year (and improving) would be preposterous. As for Kaep, his lack of snaps, in my observation, is not an indictment against his play time in the future, but a statement on the Niners versatility. Greg Roman has used a different scheme almost every game this season. He’s not giving opposing coordinators game tape to rely on – they just won’t know what to plan for. That will miss sometimes, like it did against the Giants, when the Niners got away from who they are. 29 carries over 19 pass attempts is prototypical of the Niners bread-and-butter: Hard-nosed, efficient football. Going forward, they’ll have this to rely on but don’t be surprised to see Kaep play more snaps against a team hurting up front. We just need to remember we’re a deep team and there’s only one ball to go around.

      • dangle says:

Well said, and I think, as many here predicted, that the most useful way of utilizing gimmicky (for lack of a better term) stuff like CK coming in, was to use it a couple times for a couple weeks, and then lay off for a few weeks, so that you keep defenses guessing.

  5. old coach says:

Alex Smith is as physically and mentally tough as any QB in the NFL. Was hi confidence shaken hell no. IMHO crabtree looked like a top 10 wr draft pick for the first time in his career last night, as much as i like him he has’nt shown game game breaking ability previously. i have a feeling we will be seeing alot more of that type of play

    • Dennis says:

old coach, well said on all points!

    • Hoferfan67 says:

OC, well said. I’ve never seen MC run as well after the catch. This was the type of play we all thought we were getting when he was drafted. He was the player of the game and was outstanding last night.

  6. Quest to Protest Prime Time says:

The new name for Bay,23,Nick,Neal,and Big P, the Jive Turkey Gobblers!

  7. Hoferfan67 says:

It was a good game by AS and proved that his finger was affecting his play. Now that it has had time to heal, much better accuracy. I thought we’d see more MM last night, but plenty of time to get him into the action after the bye week.

Regarding the QB shuffle, I’ve put the numbers on this blog. They just haven’t been as explosive or productive as GR stated. With all of the outstanding weapons on offense, they just need to utilize them as they did last night. Good times.

    • DS94everXev says:

      hof

It doesn’t prove his finger was effecting his play. What it does prove is that AS can beat the snot out of the same D that beat the snot out of Brady and Rodgers.

That is what last night proved.

      • Jack Hammer says:

I hate agreeing with DS, but this performance says nothing about Smith’s finger healing. The offense was very well balanced in the first half, and keeping the defense guessing helped create opportunities for Smith and the receivers to make plays.

A great all around performance by the offensive coached and players. Maybe the best of the Harbaugh era?

      • DS94everXev says:

Thanks Jack. You are getting smarter.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, I’m not talking about the game plan or plays, only about his passing and accuracy. If you see the pass to RM or the passes to MC, they are on the money where they can run after the catch. In the game against the Giants and Seattle, he clearly wasn’t throwing as well.

      • DS94everXev says:

        hof

His Int against Seattle was not effected by his finger. The pass was low. That has to do more with when you release the ball.

Basically a good pass if a defender isn’t in the way. A bad pass with a defender in the way. Which was the case.

His 1st Int to the Giants was DW not doing what the NY WR’s did that day. No finger effect there. Both JH and AS said the finger had no impact on his play the last 2 weeks. AS didn’t miss any practice time due to his finger. AS didn’t miss any game time due to his finger.

That is as little of an impact that an injury can have.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Not quite DS : )

        Hofer,

He threw the ball well in the 2nd half last week as well, on the short to mid range throws. It was his decision making that was off.

      • rocket says:

This game was all about gameplan and execution. It was beautiful to watch. That is about as good as this offense has played under Harbaugh and Roman. Throw out the second half after the Moss TD because they shut it down at that point. Up until then they were moving the ball at will against a very good defense and it was so much fun to watch. I’m still jacked up today.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Jack

Ok. Have it your way then. You’re not getting smarter.
        :- )

PS I knew what your reply to my post would be. So, I set you up for that one. lol

      • ninermd says:

When did ARZ beat the snot out if Rodgers?

      • Jack Hammer says:

        LoL DS! It’s all good ; )

    • Hoferfan67 says:

I’ve had sprained fingers playing both football and basketball – it does affect your play period.

      • DS94everXev says:

        hof

No offense, but you’re not an NFL QB, or player (I think, or maybe you are).

They all play with injuries/cuts. Most of them we don’t know about. All of which could impact somebody’s play. There is no healthy starting player by week 17. They are just in various stages of pain. Think back to last years JH statement about how the team needed the bye week. Why? We were, on paper, one of the healthiest teams. Because there are no pain free players by week 17. So that extra week really helped them out.

I don’t think AS could be a starter here after so many years of bad OL play getting him killed if he couldn’t block the pain out.

      • BigP says:

        Hofer,
He played well, stop making excuses. You always do that and it takes away from his fine performance. His INT’s have been because of bad decisions, not physically bad throws. He flat out played better tonight and as a result the WR’s were able to play to their ability. Crabtree and Moss have been capable of doing that all year, they just haven’t had the chance. When they get a chance, they look pretty good.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Hofer,
as extreme as the haters can get, you sound equally extreme when you go out and make excuse after excuse.
AS’s poor games had nothing to do with finger sprains. They were poor decisions period. Unless his mind was sprained on those attempts.

      • Quest to Protest Prime Time says:

Is that what you tell the little lady sluggers?

      • I.P. Daily says:

Yeah, playing ball in high school is something like the NFL. Stupid comment of the month…

      • claude balls says:

        @ bay:

Although Hofer may or may not be right about the effect of the finger sprain, there’s nothing “extreme” about his opinion, certainly nothing that would put him on equal footing with “the haters.”

Btw, that was a nice try using the third person there, but I don’t think it fooled anyone.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Prime,
how like I said yesterday. You are not a man and you have zero integrity. You have no respect for others because you don’t respect yourself.
You double posted, you welched on your bet and Grant busted you out.
You’ve had multiple posts deleted because you continue to insult children on my baseball team.
How cool is it to be you Primeslime? Primewelch? Primetrash? Take a hint. I hope Grant bans you since you continue to post insults to children that keep getting deleted. You are now not just disrespecting the boys on my team, but the blog writer by continuing your crap.

      • Quest to Protest Prime Time says:

Bay all I hear is a crying little baby with your

Integrity? You guys think Im here to impress someone or that I care what you think.
Your a hater and now part of the five jive turkey gobblers group. Keep hating and I really could care less how you classify me. Now tell the girls to focus and play well.

    • Nick says:

      Hofer

We didn’t see the QB shuffle because there was no need for it. The starting QB played like a 1st overall pick, 8 year veteran should. I’ve stated this all along: if the Niners get C-level or higher production from the starting QB, then you’ll see more blow outs like last night.

    • dangle says:

we can all agree that not having a sprained finger on your throwing hand is a good thing…

      • DS94everXev says:

        Dangle

        Yes.

But I don’t think a sprained finger gets you from the #1 rated passer to an average QB rating of 65. Then suddenly as near perfect as perfect gets.

There is more to it than that.

  8. DS94everXev says:

If AS didn’t have confidence, he wouldn’t have ever made it to see JH as the Niner HC. Ever heard of JaMarcus Russell? That is what happens to a QB who has no confidence. You can’t last as a starter in this league for 8 years more or less as a QB if you don’t have confidence.

    • mike says:

With JaMarcus there were other significant elements like syzrup and codine that impacted his attitude, performance, weight, conditioning, confidence, outlook on life, etc.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Mike

All those things you listed are things I could say are due to confidence, or rather a lack of.

  9. Adam707 says:

My favorite quote of the night was when Alex said of his confidence “It was in my closet. I found it.” Had me laughing. Glad he played well last night.

  10. ninermd says:

I didn’t think he lost his confidence. He was just being the same inconsistent qb we’ve seen for 7 years. He becomes consistent and he becomes elite. I hope he puts together a long string of great games. Or at least 80% of the games this season were great.

    • Adam707 says:

Inconsistent, the word that works best to describe Alex. I would love to see him be able to string together a series of steller games.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, now that his finger has healed, I believe we see exactly that. I don’t like bye weeks because they can come back flat. They’ll be playing the Rams at home which will be a good thing.

    • rocket says:

      MD,

Finally something I can agree with you on. Smith is consistent with his inconsistency. Hopefully this is the start of a good run.

      • ninermd says:

Well glad to hear it Rocket. You do have a brain. Lol jk
Now if only Ribico will just admit it. The dark clouds will rise. Lol

And yes let’s hope Smith goes on a dominating run in the second half and through the playoffs. With the defense awake and the running game rolling the 49ers should do very well this season.

      • Mr. Automatic says:

Would any of you agree that Alex’s inconsistency has a direct correlation to game circumstances? That is, when the score’s close or we’re ahead (offense in a rhythm), he’s consistently strong in his decision making and his passing, but when he’s forced to come from behind (with a few quite notable exceptions), he starts to push, gets flustered, starts throwing high (consistently, even), gets nervous feet, etc.?

      • FDM says:

What QB does not play well with a lead is the better question? When your down by multiple scores you have to force the issue, get out of your game plan, defenses rush less and play coverage more so in reality, its a big hill to climb when considerggn all these factors.

Its not just our QB, its the blue print for defenses in the NFL. Get up by two scores and then you have the luxury to mix up your coverages and play more coverage and send odd blitzer periodically, while not having to force anything on offense.

      • MidWestNiner says:

The whole seems to struggle when they’re forced to come from behind. So far the losses can’t be placed on one guy on the team. The biggest problem this season with not just Smith, but the whole team has been consistency. That needs to improve.

      • FDM says:

This whole consistency thing needs to be explained to me? Is it not normal to have bad games. Is it not normal for one area of your offense to be bad one game and good another depending on the team your playing?

      • rocket says:

The Giant game was strange in so many ways it’s just puzzling to look at now. I’ve gone back and watched it a couple of times, once on the all 22 and the game was not only not as onesided as it appeared by the score, but the Niners actually controlled the first half. It was one of those games where everything that could go wrong did – much like the Cards felt last night I’m sure.

Ultimately what turned the Giant game was the missed FG’s, the KR to open the second half, and Roman inexplicably getting sidetracked in his playcalling and abandoning the run when he didn’t have to. The Giants were playing their Safeties deep and two of their ints came because Rolle was just lying in wait for a pass to be made in the middle of the field. Wasn’t a good day for Smith at all, but also wasn’t a good day for Roman much like in Championship game when they also got away from the run too early.

As I said after the game, they should just burn the tape of that one because it was poorly Coached and played. Everyone was off their game that day.

      • rocket says:

        FDM,

I can’t speak for anybody else, but for me the consistency issue is in how Smith delivers the ball more than anything. Some weeks he puts it on the money and others he doesn’t. Now some of that probably has to do with the pressure he’s facing but he just has games where the ball is a little off the mark and that is what he needs to get better at imo. The holding the ball too long seems to be something he’s unable to get over as well. I’d really like to see him throw the ball away instead of taking the sack, but it’s better than turning it over.

      • FDM says:

I have rewatched that game also Rocket and looking back, those WR’s of the Giants made some unbelievable catches. On the one drive before half, there was 3 great throws and three great catches that basically turned the game.
The Rodgers missed INT, not running the ball and of course the 3 INT’s did not help.
That game just shows that when we are not balanced on offense and our defense cannot stop the run, we are very vulnerable.

      • Nick says:

Well said Rocket. I haven’t watched the all 22 film of the Giants game, but that sure looked ugly live and on the regular TV tape.

      • MidWestNiner says:

What I mean by inconsistency is how they’ve played so far. In the games the Niners have won they dominated from the first quarter on. In the games they have lost , it has been a total team failure all around. They some continuing consistency in order to have a better chance to avoid those types of losses.

      • ninermd says:

Actually MR auto….. Smith hasn’t been bad when they were getting blown out and the coverage eased up. Take a look at this blog for example. One week idiots like bs are all over it comparing Smith to the greatest ever (JM) and then you have folks like J23 calling him out for a bad game. Smith hast put together a full season of solid games from his play. It’s been that way his whole career. That’s the reason you get folks, sportscasters, writers asking the question, can he carry this team to a Super Bowl.

Someone else brought up the defense and rest of the team. Yes they have been a little inconsistent this season, but still are near the top of the league in some areas. The defense played consistent last season. So we know how good they can be. And can count on them most games. Can we with Alex??? That’s still a question. I know they aren’t going to have great games every week. Smith so far has had bad games vs NYJ, NYG, Sea, and Minn. and was OK vs Det. That’s four out of 7 games. I’d like to see 7 of the last 8 of his games looking like last night Nd like the Buff and Gb games.

      • Quest to Protest Prime Time says:

Is this the comment for the rest of the year MD, the one where after each game Alex plays well you will say he needs to do it over each game then when he plays poorly you will trash him?
My point is you think your telling it like it is but it will never be good enough. I don’t get that.

      • MidWestNiner says:

The Jets and Seahawks games are two that I classify as consistent MD. Both times the Niners consistently ran the ball right down the opposing D’s throat while our D played lights out. Smith really didn’t need to do much with the passing game in those wins. And don’t forget there were some questionable bumps and holds against our WRs that were never called.
What I mean by consistent is when a gameplan is run effectively. In six games I can say that has been true, but the other two not so much.

      • chelsea says:

Its pathetic how ninermd is trying to distance himself from the gobbler group. Now its about consistency?

Like some said why r there 2 standards here. One for alex and the other for the so called winning QB’s

Consistent is just another new word to cover a delusional confused mind who refuses to see the positive in Alex since he waz drafted

      • DS94everXev says:

        19-5 is consistent.

The D’s he’s beaten in that time: AZ, Seattle(in Seattle which Brady/Brees could not do), Cin.

The QB’s he’s beaten: EM, MV, CP, DB, AR, MS (2x).

That is consistently beating tough teams. Which is what 19-5 states.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

DS, it’s a team game. AS didn’t beat the other opponents QBs. He had a good game and needs to keep the chemistry going long term with his receivers.

      • ninermd says:

Quest…. Show me where I bash Alex smith. If you think me calling out his weaknesses is bashing him, them we will never see eye to eye. And after pointing out his bad play I have said I want him to do better and hope that he does. So where’s the bashing? I can’t be all on board or off with a qb that is inconsistent. All I can do is hope he improves every game. Leave the Smith wars to the others. As far as idiots I can’t stand I will continue to bash THEM, but they aren’t Alex smith. Straighten that thinking out brotha

Lol onelame is back and as pathetic as ever. Distance myself? Sorry Holmes I was on board with Smith since last year. And predicted him having a great season. Which is more than most Smithers wouldn’t or couldn’t do. Now pick that splinter out of your a$$. Bench warmer. You’ve been ejected take a hint and beat. Banned again. Lmao!!!! Now who was right?

      • ninermd says:

Bs…. Since Smith beats those teams himself. What were his stats across the board. Did he have big receiving games or defensive games? I haven’t seen those stats yet. Pathetic. You’re a one trick pony. Get off my teams page. Sf 49ers NOT sf Smiths!

      • bayareafanatic says:

        BS…. buahahahahahah. Crying game.

      • Neal says:

Yes that is what I call Mr. Smith, he is Mr. Inconsistent, the fact of the matter is this. If all of the receivers in the NFL , including the Niners, had a choice of QB they would love to play with as their first choice, not one would pick AS as their first choice, they would pick Eli, Peyton, Brees, Brady and Rodgers. Now that is a fact!!

      • Sean in Canada says:

Neal, all the receivers in the NFL wouldn’t pick all 5 of the qbs you mentioned as their first choice. They’d pick one of them making all others lesser qbs. Who cares what all the receivers in the league would want. Ask them if they want to win with lesser stats or lose with great stats. It’ll show you what type of team player they are and whether or not you want them on your football team or your fantasy team.

      • DS94everXev says:

What is it with haters and homophobic comments?

        hof
Since before you were born, it has been called QB 1 vs. QB 2. Remember JM vs Dan Marino? Or last Sunday of PM vs. DB? At the end of the comment they may throw in the teams name.

Few here have equaled my posts talking about the team game. That doesn’t mean I live in a bubble and ever hear QB 1vs other QB 2. Don’t act like this is some new idea.

There have also been a number of articles bringing up the QB’s AS has beaten since JH arrived. So, I don’t know why you’d make that comment out of the blue.

      • Neal says:

        Sean,

I totally disagree, I don’t participate in fantasy football or follow it, also all of these QB’s are all Super Bowl winners and will again be in the Playoffs this year, except the Saints, so I do believe they can get the high stats, get paid well and win Super Bowls. I also would add Big Ben in the mix.

      • Sean in Canada says:

Neal, my point is, hypothetically, if the receiver would rather have great stats with AR and fall in the first round of the playoffs due to a leaky D or have lesser stats with AS but a championship caliber D and a team that wins a super bowl then that receiver is playing for the wrong reasons.
Do you think Moss would jump to the Saints right now to catch 50 passes in the last half of the season and then sit at home to watch the playoffs?
There’s no doubt the guys you mentioned are better qbs than AS, but you’d hope that guys on the team have a goal in mind and it shouldn’t be personal stats.

      • Sean in Canada says:

Neal, I also don’t participate in fantasy football so all this stat stuff rubs me the wrong way. I care about the W/L column for the Niners.

      • claude balls says:

I think free agency has shown that when a WR can choose where he plays, money is the determining factor in his decision. Everything else is secondary.

      • Sean in Canada says:

        True enough, Claude.

      • ninermd says:

Hey BS… Michael Crabtree is 19-5. Why hate on that guy. He’s beaten AR,DB,MS, Eli, that’s not good enough for you? MC will continue to win. 19-5 is just the beginning. Wheeeew!

      • DS94everXev says:

I bet the best WR playing today (LF) would love to get a chance to play with AS after the past 3 years.

Who cares anyway? If a WR doesn’t want to win games, I don’t want him here anyway. If he does, then he better shut his mouth and get his job done. WR’s are the most sensitive of NFL players. I get tired of their whining.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Hey md!

Do you call yourself that because you are always bashing your head into walls, that you see a MD?

And racists don’t hold any power or persuasion with me. That would mean you. Go hate now after 19-5. Loser wuss.

      • Nick says:

        DS,

What would you bet? That you’ll leave this blog for 2 weeks?

      • DS94everXev says:

        Nick

2 weeks is a girlie bet nick.

Prime initially bet bay that if the Niners lose against Seattle, he’d leave the blog forever. And bay likewise if we win. Bay wussed out by having it only be 2 weeks, and putting the all important stat requirement in there.

So, I bet bay, Neal, the rest of them that if the Niners beat AZ, they’d leave forever. And if the Niners lose to the same team who beat us last year in the place they beat us and who are trying to end a 3 game losing streak, I’d leave forever (no longer post which includes any double posting). Well, the wuss patrol who love to say that I can’t live without the blog proved that they are the ones who actually couldn’t. And not a one of them had the balls to make a mans bet. Funny thing considering how much they “know” I’m a girl.

Tough guys never are. Real tough guys don’t need to go around talking tough all the time. All I’ve heard is how much they want me gone. Well, they don’t want me gone that much at all. This proved it.

So, that was the bet. And they wussed out on it. Thus their names are changed to wuss boys.

From Joe Staley on the Barrows Blog:

Said left tackle Joe Staley of the Cardinals’ strategy: “They wanted to put the ball in Alex’s hands and have him beat them. And he kicked their (butt) today.”

    Nicely put.

  12. old coach says:

Barrows is also reporting that staley had pneumonia last week. he had a 104 temp a day or 2 before the game and had lost 10 lbs. wow i’ve had pneumonia before for staley to play just days later is incredible

I saw Harbaugh’s iin a segment last night on ESPN. I’m still laughing about it.

They all play with injuries/cuts. Most of them we don’t know about. All of which could impact somebody’s play. There is no healthy starting player by week 17. They are just in various stages of pain. So are you a player ?

    • ninermd says:

Lol Sputnik bs is something else, but a player no waaaay! I’d bet it never picked up a ball in its life.

      If I am, it doesn’t mean I can’t read.

Try it once in awhile. You hear that all the time from coaches/reporters/players/media. Explain JH’s statement needing the bye week last year.

Great team win last night. The march to a sixth Lombardi Trophy continues on.

Yet another great piece from you Jack. I remember you saying you always wanted to try your hand at writing. Well I’m here to tell you that you lied to everybody because YOU ARE A WRITER, and an excellent one at that.

    • claude balls says:

      @ Jack:

Thanks for the link. And the perspective. Another fine piece of writing.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, other than stating, “let’s see if he can do it again next week” ( at least twice in your article) it was a good article – it’s a bye week, so there is no next week! : )

      • cantbreakpar says:

The phrase “let’s see if he can…” was used to illustrate what some are saying about AS after last night’s game. First use was to set up the point, then expanded on in a subsequent paragraph. I don’t think it was a denigration of AS by the JackHammer. At least that’s not how I read it.

In the same way AS(and any SF QB) will live under the weight of JM/SY expectations, MC will struggle to carry the standard as set by JR. I’m enjoying both for what they are doing now. Forget about the past — there won’t be another trio like the ones listed above. Enjoy what is happening right before our eyes.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        That is correct cantbreakpar.

Is anybody else having some of their words disappear when trying to post a comment?

  21. Mood_Indigo says:

Of all the Niners games under Harbaugh, this one reminded me most of the old-style WCO under Walsh. Efficient use of short and intermediate range throws taken for long gains and scores. That Taylor-like move by Moss. I think 62 of the 72 yards by Crab was YAC. Very satisfying game for Niners fans. Most satisfying for me: the lack of meaningful injuries to starters going into the second half of the season. And playing only one game over a stretch of 23 days should help revitalize the players both mentally and physically.

  22. MidWestNiner says:

Great summary of the game here:

  23. fesnyc says:

my goodness, there’s so much worry about the state of Alex’s mind. should we just hand him a trophy to make him feel better?

this is the NFL. its up to Alex to find a way to produce, and to work with what he has to win and make others better. if he can’t find a way to turn normal human anxiety into performance, someone else will. and last night he looked pretty damn good.

  24. Adam says:

What some of you are forgetting and something Harbaugh says all the time: the other team has a vet vote. You can ‘t always do what you want to do.

  25. Brodie2Washington says:

“gobble, gobble, funk-jive turkey gobblers” ranks right up there with “dad gum Yahoo.” Clearly, Mr. Harbaugh is settling into his coaching job quite nicely. Win, and we will think it’s a cute, harmless personality quirk. Lose, and the public will think coach lost his mind.

One thing is clear. When Harbaugh speaks at the podium, it’s for the benefit of his players and coaches, not reporters and fans. Harbaugh will always err on the side of protecting his players reputations. If that creates friction with the press, all the better because it builds the “us vs the world” siege mentality Bill Walsh used so effectively. It also makes the 49ers an attractive destination for future free agents and assistant coaches.

So… when you listen to Harbaugh, understand there is only one real audience he’s actually speaking to, and it aint us.

  26. Jack Hammer says:

I agree with Harbaugh. Gotta love arm chair psychologists.
