SANTA CLARA – Joe Staley spoke at his locker Tuesday afternoon. Here’s what he said about Alex Smith.
Q: Did you see your coach’s “gobble, gobble, turkey” quote about criticism directed toward Alex Smith?
STALEY: I did.
Q: Has he ever used that language with you guys?
STALEY: Never.
Q: Do you know what it meant?
STALEY: Just a lot of talk. Gobble, gobble. That’s never been an issue in the locker room. It’s just people talking.
Q: What year would go by without Alex Smith taking criticism?
STALEY: Never. He’s won 19 games in the last two years, and people still question whether he’s a leader of this football team. There’s no question in our locker room or on our team – he’s our quarterback.
Q: He downplayed his finger injury. Can you tell if it’s affected him?
STALEY: I don’t think it’s been an issue. He never brought it up once. If it was, that would be stupid. It’s a finger (laughs).
Q: He’s a quarterback.
STALEY: Who cares? (More laughs).
Q: Do you ever encourage Alex to go on twitter and defend himself?
STALEY: No, he would never go on twitter. Although, on the flight he was checking out twitter because he was trending, I guess. That’s a big deal (laughs).
Q: You caught him looking at it?
STALEY: Yeah, he sits next to me on the plane. It was very out of character for him. I guess he was feeling pretty good about himself.
Q: Is Alex Smith your ghostwriter on twitter?
STALEY: No, but I’ve offered to ghostwrite his account. He’s not into it.

GO NINERS
No,the 49ers never read twitter posts. They could care less. Unless, you say “squeal’ then, they do.
The game was booooring. Methodical. Just a slow roasting of Arizona. Not even a trick play. No veering from the game plan. Inhuman patience.
I think my 49er head coach is an alien.
I thought the Gore and Hunter in the backfield offset formation was exciting.
I wouldn’t call that game boring. I enjoyed it thoroughly and was thrilled by the TDs and especially Goldson’s hit on Doucet(?). I still can’t watch that hit without screaming. And they did do some cutsie type plays, some worked, some didnt’.
However, it was never in doubt that the 49ers would win… From basically the first drive
Grant – Does last nights game change your opinion at all about acquiring Dwayne Bowe?
Ho hum. Absolute annihilation of our closest divisional rival, on their home field. Let’s get back to bashing Alex Smith. WHY did he throw an incompletion… was it low self esteem? Tiny little hands?
Alex smith says……. All you jive turkeys shut up well tell he plays a good team again lol ha
The Smith conundrum continues… It’s crazy because he played GREAT but watching him it just seemed a bit underwhelming. His stat line was unbelievable but even John Gruden was telling him to get rid of the ball and stop taking sacks which put the offense in 2nd & 3rd and long. In the past they didn’t convert those 3rd downs but last night they did a great job. So as fans we just have to take the sacks that come along with the safe approach and hope the efficiency keeps netting results like last night! Hats off to Alex and the Offense… Way to step up this game!
It amazes me that there are those that consantly look for a reason the come down on AS. The west coast offense was never one that was noted for the bombs thrown down field. It was always a a short, timing keyed, passing game that made its name for the run after the pass. I don’t remember Montana or Young heaving balls 40 yards down the field. the majority of the passes we 5, 10 or 15 yards at most and than the run after the catch. It was very similar to the pass to RM during the Arizona game. How many times did Taylor, Rice or the tight ends get a short to medium length pass and than break for a big gain? 300 yard passing numbers usually come from the losing team. JH has taken some of the old Michigan smash mouth foot ball under Bo and combined it with a little finess from the west coast offense and come up with a winning combination. Plod on and just keep winning.

Smith has reason to be proud of last nights game. Did everything he needed too. I hope they review the MC backwards pass and over turn it, would be cool for him to be in the record books
AS played a very good game last nite. One of the complaints is that he is inconsistant, and I do agree somewhat with that. However, what I am noticing is that the good games are coming closer and closer togeather. Its just a matter of time before AS strings togeather some good games in a row. Before JH we would see AS put togeather a good quarter and a good half. Now in the last year and a half he has put togeather good complete games. Next step for AS is to put togeather back to back very good games.
Last nite was a big win for the Niners. At the half way point the Niners are now two games ahead of the Hawks and the Cards and three up on the Rams. We are two and zero in the Division where as the Hawks are zero and three and the Cards are one and two.
To open the second half of the season is against the Rams a much improved team, the Niners are going to have to be careful not to get complacent against them.
Last nite the defense finally showed up. They played like they did last year. I have been reminded several times that this defense is number one in both run and pass defense. Well thats stats for ya, they might of been number one but it wasnt passing my eyeball test. Well the game last nite I saw an improvement in the secondary and yet they yielded 290 yards thru the air. By the way with two minutes to go in the half the Niners gave up forty total yards of offense to the Cards. There leading rushing was averaging .8 yards per carry for a total of six yards. Skelton had one yard rushing.
Last Nites game wasnt as close as the score indicated it was. The Cards will remember this game for quite sometime.
Pound the ball we win.
Good post…
Yes good post but the D has been showing up for many weeks! What do you mean finally showed up? Jets, Buffalo, GB, and even in the Giants loss they played good. They held the Giants to field goals despite being constantly put on a short field! Plus they played tired due to the offense’s lack of production. The one bad game by the D was against MIN and again the offense didn’t help them out any. I would dare say finally the entire TEAM showed up Monday night!
Maybe they meant they finally hit the QB this week because against the giants Eli got hit maybe 3xs during that game. Plus gave up over 1oo yds rushing to Bradshaw.

First let me clarify I wasnt making the assertion that the Niners D isnt good, and in my post I noted that others had said we were number 1 in many catagories. You are correct in saying the defense has played very well all year. My contention is this, defenses win the Super Bowl, the team set a standard last year, with the same components I expect this years defense to be as good if not better then last year. I dont use stats to back anything that I say other then turnovers and wins/losses, stats mean little to me. I with my eyes saw the defense finally play up to last years standards – intensity, they were relentless Monday nite. There isnt any stats out their that can explain that only the eyeball test. The defensive unit at this point in time is what is going to win the Super Bowl. It has to be very very good to do that. I love our defense but something was lacking in the prior games and it showed up last Monday nite.
11 49ers make the Pro Football Focus Midseason All-Pro Team, either as starters or honorable mentions (most as honorable mentions):
Vernon Davis
Joe Staley
Mike Iupati
Jonathan Goodwin
Alex Boone
Justin Smith
Patrick Willis*
Navorro Bowman*
Ahmad Brooks
Dashon Goldson
Andy Lee*
* = Starter
Wow 4 out of our five offensive lineman are mentioned. That is making a statement for sure. AD is also having a very good year too bad he didnt make it. Most notable is Gore isnt on that list – hmmm.
@ undercenter:
Perhaps the two are related.
Claude
I was just reading that Alex is the NFC offensive player of the week. The team seems to be coming togeather nicely.
