Niner chatter: How good are the 49ers?

Frequent commenter “Jack Hammer” has started his own 49ers blog and it’s great. It’s called “Niner Chatter” and you should bookmark it right now.

Mr. Hammer’s most recent post is called, “How good are the 49ers?” and it’s very interesting. You can read it here.

If you haven’t noticed, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat’s Inside the 49ers blog has some of the most talented, intelligent 49ers fans on the internet and I’m extremely proud of them. I hope more commenters start blogs soon.

I guess this answers the question as to whether Grant approves of Jack posting links to his blog here ;)

    Good stuff, Jack!

I can’t wait for Stan’s blog to go live!

    @ Jack
Good read, bro. A nice lean writing style to present salient thoughts, and the W/L record comparisons to sell your points.

  5. Intelligent Fan says:

Thank’s for the compliment Grant. I wish I could say the same about you!

    Boom. Roasted

How good are the Niners ?

Ask Mark Sanchez and Fitzpatrick ! .. :-)

I think this is their year to go all the way !
The Harbs is the best thing to happen to this team since …
    well … (dare I say it ?) …. Bill Walsh !
    (there ! .. I said it and I’m glad !)

The only thing that can stop the Niners .. is the Niners, themselves !
And I don’t see that happening anytime soon !

Niner Faithful have been waiting for a long, long time for the
sixth Lombardi trophy … and this is the season.. they’ll get it !

    Go Niners !

Excellent job Jack. I didn’t realize how difficult the next 5 or 6 games will be for the good guys. Your post was compelling. Good work.

Grant – Very nice of you to support Jack!

  12. Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, with all of this attention, don’t forget the objective!! LOL

    • Jack Hammer says:

No need to worry about that happening Hofer : )

Going to need some help to make that a reality.

  13. AES says:

    You “the man” Grant!

You my friend are quite outstanding …

  14. 209er says:

Not according to all the pundits and analysts out there, they can’t seem to stop gushing over the Texans. I’m tired of hearing about how there the most balanced team in the NFL ……Really! The Niners just passed for 308 and ran for 311 on the Bills, if you ask me they balanced the hell out of them. Not to mention what they did to the Jets in that embarrassing shout out, the same team the Texans had a hard time closing out the win last night. I guess its all right the Niners do better as underdogs anyway.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

The Bills don’t count unless you’re N.E. LOL

      • Chris says:

I just want to say I called Houston being number 1 week 1 and repeated it week 2 and 3. I think the Jet’s game was two parts.
I think Houston looked past NY and I also think NY gave it everything they could mustard. Either way, I am liking my SF vs Hou superbowl prediction.

In Morgantown, West Virginia, Geno Smith just felt a cold chill run down his spine. Mike Nolan in Line for Another Head Coaching Job.

    • Msclemons67 says:

Sweet Jesus Claude, put a #NSFW up if you’re going to post links like that.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Msc:

Sorry, I figured the title of the link was sufficient warning.

      • Msclemons67 says:

I thought it had to be an Onion article.

      • 49erGirl says:

In all honesty, I think Nolan deserves a second chance to be a HC. He must have learned a thing or two from his stint here about how not to treat players – at least it appears that way in the article. Plus, he has a good eye for talent and as a DC, he has been nothing short of brilliant throughout his career.

Singletary, on the other hand…not so much.

Now go ahead and let it fly – I know this won’t be a popular opinion :-)

      • Msclemons67 says:

I mostly agree 49erGirl with two caveats:

        1) he needs a solid offensive coordinator
        2) keep him away from the QBs

The empty suit is pretty good with defense and he seemed to do well in day-to-day management of a team with no talent. He couldnt be any worse than that buffoon in New Jersey.

And of course he gave us the Precious. :-D

      • 49erGirl says:

Agree with you on 1 and 2 – plus I think he has enough self worth not to go find the next Jimmy Raye for #1 :-).

However – wasn’t the Precious more of a parting gift from Mike McCarthy? Could have sworn he was the swing vote in that decision…

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Let’s have a moratorioum on precious shall we?? Just because you disagree with someone here is no reason to slam AS. Afterall, the 9ers starting QB is starting to get national accolades. : )

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        *moratorium*

      • Neal says:

I disagree that Mike Nolan deserve another shot, some guys are just better coordinators than Head Coaches. To name a few other than Nolan, see Dom Capers, Norv Turner, and that fat guy that used to be the head coach of the Cowboys and now the asst with Houston.

    • Neal says:

Just don’t let him choose the number 1 pick in the draft.

  18. rocket says:

Just put me down for a good job Jack, everytime you write a new article. I like your writing style and agree that the NFC West is the new Black and Blue division. Well done Jack.

  19. MidWestNiner says:

Great job Jack. Got another blog to check from now on. Keep ‘em coming.

  20. Jack Hammer says:

A big Thank You to all for your kind words, and to Grant for being so generous and promoting it, they are all appreciated.

Here is the new update for today
    http://ninerchatter.blogspot.com/2012/10/3-defensive-keys-for-49ers-week-6-ny.html

    • Neal says:

Great work Jack, nice to see you look at things with a objective eye.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Thanks Neal. How did the HS game go this week?

      • Neal says:

Another lost to Terra Nova 27-14, I am really not in loved with the plays, it seems that Jimmy Raye is the coach, and 90% of the plays are runs, even if you are down by 14 points. The times they pass, they did pretty well. Also their is a disconnect between the coaches and the players, seems that at least 4 or 5 plays a game, they only have 10 players, have not seen this problem with the opposing teams.

They play Palo Alto this Sat, probably another tough game

      • Jack Hammer says:

Sorry to hear that Neal. The organizational stuff, like the 10 guys on the field type of stuff should be handled in practice and falls mostly on the coaches.

We used to have a mat with 11 circles on it on the sidelines, and when the coaches called for, lets just say special teams, they would all have to line up there. It made it simple for everyone.

      • Neal says:

Love the idea with the mats

    • Chicago49er says:

Jack excellent Blog my friend! very well written!

  21. claude balls says:

Well, Football Outsiders have released their Week 5 DVOA numbers, and the 49ers rank No.1 by a significant margin:

    http://footballoutsiders.com/dvoa-ratings/2012/week-5-dvoa-ratings

The gap between No. 1 SF and No. 2 Houston is greater than the gap between No. 2 Houston and No. 10 Seattle.

Moreover, FO’s preseason prediction (which warned of a serious regression for the 49ers) still counts for 27% of FO’s ratings, which makes the 49ers’ No. 1 ranking even more impressive.

Note: the numbers are adjusted for quality of opponents, which takes care of any “but the Packers/Lions/Jets/Bills suck” attempts to diminish the team’s accomplishments.

    Other notes:

Offense is ranked 3rd, defense is 4th, special teams 24th
Offensive line adjusted line yards is No. 1 by a sizable margin
Among QBs, Alex Smith is No. 8 in DYAR and No. 7 in DVOA
Among RBs, Frank Gore is No. 3 in DYAR and No. 2 in DVOA
Among TEs, Vernon Davis No. 2 in DYAR and No. 3 in DVOA

In the comments section, there is an interesting explanation offered regarding the regression of the the 49ers’ special teams. I think that commenter bravehoptoad is on to something. I highly recommend that you read what he wrote.

I hope Harbaugh has put out a contract on Freddie P. Soft. That f’er has to be lurking all over the building.

    • ribico says:

Thanks claude. Looking at the comments, as suggested, on that page I noticed a lot of talk on FO’s “regression to the mean” predictions for the 49ers. In Alex’s case, I think there’s an inverse at play – a progression to the mean. A #1 pick is a #1 pick for a reason. That he never lived up to those expectations has been a subject for discussion, to say the least. Alexcuses aside, we are seeing, with the coaching and complementary pieces necessary for the team game finally in place, Alex’s “progression” to his “mean”, that base level of play that had him as the best player of that draft, finally coming about.

The “regression to the mean” predictors that Alex’s improved 2011 would have him reverting in 2012 got it backwards, IMO.

    • Jack Hammer says:

      Claude,

Thanks for the links. The FO’s link further illustrates just how difficult this upcoming stretch will be for the 49ers, especially on the offensive side of the ball. With the exception of the Giants they will be going up against 4 of the top 8 defenses in the league according to their numbers. Compare that to the first 5 weeks when they faced only 1 team in the top 10.

On the flip side the offensive matchups are quite favorable with only 1, NY being in the top half. I will stick by what I said near the end of that post:

“On paper these games all have the appearance of great defensive battles. The 49ers defense must continue to play at the same level it has over the last 2 weeks when it gave up a combined 3 points. If it does, the onus will fall on the offense to move the ball, and the special teams units to help win the field position battle.”

    • rocket says:

Grantland had the same kind of viewpoint as far as the natural regression the team would take because of a lack of turnover differential like they had last year, and it hasn’t materialized yet. The differential is solid but not ridiculous and the team is still winning. The offense has taken over the ST’s as the second best unit on the team and is inching closer to the defense. That is the biggest difference this year.

Jack is right about this upcoming stretch of games. This will be the toughest part of the schedule and if they come through it and hit the bye at 6-2 or even….7-1 they are setup very well for the rest of the season.

“Grant how do you feel about Jack mowing your grass while promoting his blog on yours? Seems sort of wrong no?”

What the matter Prime? You don’t feel like contributing to this post? Lol.
