SANTA CLARA – At his press conference Tuesday afternoon, I asked Greg Roman five questions about Colin Kaepernick. Here’s what Roman said.
ME: Why are you playing Colin Kaepernick so much? What are you hoping to get from him that you aren’t getting from Alex Smith?
ROMAN: Colin’s doing a nice job in his understudy role. There are times when Colin can bring in a different dynamic to the game, and that’s week-to-week. As a backup quarterback in this league, you have to be ready to play at any time. Colin’s had some opportunities to come in and contribute the last couple weeks. It’s week-to-week. We’re always going to do whatever we think gives us the best chance to win. At the same time, Colin’s a guy that’s really progressing in his second year. His first year was somewhat of a redshirt year. He’s doing a nice job. He brings in a different dynamic when we bring him in there. We run some quarterback runs, some play actions off those types of plays – those types of plays. He’s doing a nice job. We’ve just got to keep that development coming.
ME: Is there ever a fear that by putting him in the game too much you disrupt the flow of the offense?
ROMAN: I think that’s a concern. I think that’s always a concern. I think everything’s a concern. It’s something we’ve got to be mindful of. We’ve got to really take a look at it and make the best decision for the team.
ME: Do you think it was disruptive Sunday against the Giants?
ROMAN: I don’t know that for a fact, but it is possible. We’re always going to make those decisions in the best interest of the team, evaluate it and go from there.
ME: Is Kaepernick being groomed to take over next year as the starting quarterback?
ROMAN: Kaepernick is the backup quarterback right now. He’s really in an understudy role. We need him to make improvement, so we need him out there on the field. He needs to be ready at all times to play.
ME: But is he being groomed to take over next year as the starting quarterback?
ROMAN: That remains to be seen. We like Alex Smith as our quarterback. Alex Smith won a lot of football games the past couple years for us. He’s a winner, he’s our quarterback and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

17 – 4 before Giants game as a starter in regular season and we’re having this discussion why? Jesus… what other QB on a 4-1 team this season has to put up with this BS. GIVE IT A REST ALREADY!!!
4-2 Benny. TAke your shoes off and count on your toes if you have to.
Before the Giants game bay… try reading my post 1st. That game was idiotic and the coaches have basically concurred. What is it with so many peeps on here with the “grass is always” greener attitude. I guess the NFC Championship game wasn’t good enough last year and boy Kap looked SO good on Sunday said nobody ever
Benny outside of the Vikings he hadn’t played anyone yet? Look at his numbers and results versus the last three tough defenses he’s played. Giants NFC Championship, Vikings this year and Giants this year.
This isn’t what’s best for Smith anymore, it’s what’s best for our Niners. No more excuses. The oline is better and the receivers are better.
And Roman better shape up too.
Not really CK’s fault though. I mean he’s coming in to make one single play in a series.
He’s being asked to do very specific things. Those specific things are what I hate about this.
Benny, most rational fans give Smith a chance. Grant’s disruption question is spot on, and I believe the answer is: absolutely.
I guess you were in Europe last week when Alex lead the offense to a 600 total offensive game? Something Joe, Rice, Young, Owens, Ect ever did. And oh yeah.. it was verse a horrible Bills team. I also forgot from 1980 to 2000 that the Niners never..not once played a horrible team. The planets must have aligned for Smith and there was def some fairy dust involved too :P
Benny have you gotten so desperate that you are going to use the Bills who may have the worst defense in the league and basically QUIT as a successful example for Smith?
I usually don’t bring up last season because I think last season was simply put, Last Season. However, in this argument of ignorance with Benny, it’s relevant. Last season SF beat a NO team who beat who? No one. Just look at the first 5 games this season. 1-4. I can understand losing a head coach can affect a team somewhat, but the head coach isn’t the reason this team has lead all but 1 game and lost all but 1 game. So, Alex Smith’s performance against NO wasn’t as “great and elite” as you’d have us think. If that was the case, RG 3 is elite. Cam Newton is elite. Matt Castle is Elite. All games No was leading and QBs brought them back to win.
Matt, what is the objective at the start of the game? To win right? What’s AS record since good coaching/JH has been here do you know? Agendas don’t equal wins!
>>Benny have you gotten so desperate that you are going to use the Bills who may have the worst defense in the league and basically QUIT as a successful example for Smith?
I bet the Cardinals, possibly a rival to our division crown, would have liked to play that team. Oh wait, they did. And lost. Kolb, who all the haters wanted in here, managed a steller 64 rating against those quiters, the worse defense in the league.
So yeah Bills, at 3-3 on top of the AFC east, are a good example to use.
Hofer,
You always say Smith’s record is such and such, what would his record be with a mediocre defense and running game?
“Last season SF beat a NO team who beat who? No one.”
Dude. With all respect, what the heck are you talking about? New Orleans was 13-3 last season. Was this just magically bestowed upon them before we met them in the playoffs?
You can dislike Smith all you want but don’t try to diminish the opponent in that game (or what Smith and the rest of the team did) to make your point. Doesn’t fly.
The fact that this year’s Saints can’t get it together in no way diminishes what last year’s Saints were able to accomplish. This is one of those fallacy arguments – although I don’t remember which one.
Apples and oranges. This year’s Saints team isn’t last year’s Saint team. Obviously
Benny. Alex smith led the offense to 300 yards passing and the rb’s led them too 300 yards. Nice try though
Benny,
4-2 coming off of his worst game under JH. Maybe you missed it.
“17 – 4 before Giants game as a starter in regular season.”
Pretty clear what he means.
23… AGAIN… I said before the Giants game. You don’t think it would F with any QB’s head to be swapped in and out?!? Can you imagine Cutler or Rodgers being happy with that? We’re a power running team… go back to what got us here. Not this CK sprinkle here and there…
Benny,
he should be used to it. Think about what’s he’s been exposed to in his horrible career. Let the Smithers tell it, they don’t know why he’s not on suicide watch right now.
All I know is that this is a business. If you don’t want Kap on the field, do your Job. The reason Kap is on the field is clearly because the gap between he and Smith is pretty small. smith better be looking over his shoulder both on and off of the field. Kap is a half step behind him. One more of those 3 pick games and BAM!!!!! …….. you guys know the rest!
Benny,
The problem is that he’s Alex Smith. He’s not good enough to get upset. He’s certainly not that much better than Kap to get upset. He better start worrying about his job.
Look in the mirror if you wanna see desperate Bay. Like him or hate him it is what it is. Again.. are you telling me none of the teams before this year EVER played a horrible team?!? They’re still an NFL team that got SMOKED like the Jet’s before them. 4-1 with #1 passer rating going into the Giants game and ALL I read on here is whining and crying… every day… every Alex blog… all day.
+1000, Benny
Good job Benny! I know, ya just about have to get out the letter blocks to spell it out for some of these guys. LMAO
Benny guys llike you are the ones that think every kid on a team deserves a trophy at the end of a season. I don’t celebrate mediocrity.
Grant, GREAT job! You didn’t let him off the hook!!
+1
Thanks Grant.
At least we get answers out of Roman. He gets props for that.
+1 Grant. I liked how you pushed the question and didn’t let him off the hook. This was a fantastic read and I liked how you kept him accountable for the QB merri-go-round and the momentum it killed.
Thanks, you guys. I really appreciate it.
As much as Alex has scared me and have not been a strong supporter of his, I have been impressed by his hard work and professionlaism. He works hard does not complain and does his best no mater what Fickle Fans expect. I was at the game sunday and was shocked by several things.
1. How intoxicated every one was.
2. Tons of Giants Fans
3. Lots of Fights in the stands
4. Drunk people trying to push my 7 year old son out of the way that was attending his first game in person., Just rude people in General.
5. Lots of opportunaties in the first quarter but only 3 points.
6. Whole game I kept expecting a turn around.
7. Manning makes great throws.
8. Kap has talent but not ready yet.
9. Watching this game made me realize how much I do not miss the last few years where we were very flat or mediocre.
10. Coaching staff must feel that Alex has many strenghts but just may not be good enough for the superbowl. They want Kap to have lots of experiences.
11. Changes Happen week to week. Couple weeks ago, People were down on the Packers and Aarron Rodgers and people were thinking The Texans would be the best. Packers destroyed them last weekend.
12. Long Season Anything can happen!
All changes with the ghetto thugs when we move to SC. I go to almost every game and it is pretty bad… I make it a practice to go up to fans in the other teams colors and shake their hand and tell em good luck. It’s turning into a damn prison yard
Say’s the guy who’s handle is……final scene of that film is roses and cupcakes BB???
Alcohol is the culprit, not a prison yard or “thugs”, alcohol. If you police the parking lots, lot less probs.
I used to work security @ The Stick trust me. It happens all around the country, but in Sept/October is there any more beauty of a place than SF @ this time of year. Too much time in a parking lot, under the sun cooking with little water and lots of Bud Light, you get a zoo.
Also depending on who we’re playing because you have fans posture/puff out chest more if there is a vocal fanbase from other side, protecting your home turf.
rebel
Have you heard they found a planet that has 2 suns? Like Skywalkers home planet. And it is still less windy than SF is. lol
As for the rude fan comment, how does that surprise you? Look at this blog for exhibit A of rudeness.
Weirder than that. FOUR suns: http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/16/us/space-planet-four-suns/index.html
I heard there are hot 10ft tall blue chicks on that planet that fly dinosaurs
That is pretty funny D.S. I guess I should re-locate their! I live in a small community with tons of trees and a lake close by! I am probably more of a Moon of Endor type of guy!
You are right about Rudeness, I just thought people would get back to respect and common deceny, but what do I know?
@rebelscum
When the emperor met Luke, he at least said “Welcome young Skywalker….” The most evil thing in the Star Wars universe has better manners than many here/at the stadium.
What does that say about us? The first reply I got from several here were not so welcoming as the emperors welcome of Luke. Just pathetic man.
@Adam
I thought it was 2 suns just a few days ago. How can a planet orbit around 4 stars? Wonder how the gravitational pull works between the 4 stars and planet so that they don’t tear one another to shreds? Burning the midnight oil may have a different meaning in PH1 then. lol
@rebelscum
That lake wouldn’t happen to be Shasta Lake and your town near the famed “Burger Barn” in Danville would it?
Actually it is the town Paradise in Butte County right next to Lake Oroville. Shasta Lake is only an hour and a half away. Shasta is beautiful!
I don’t go to the games anymore partly because of the ghetto thugs. Not worth the hassle and you get better views on TV with all the replay and slow-mo stuff – and now in HD. Plus, now that the Niners are a better team, the networks have more cameras. Noticed that they’re starting to use more of the All-22 in the replays too which is pretty cool.
Anyway, yeah, not at all worth it anymore. Plus the traffic down there is abysmal anymore. Hopefully the new joint will be a lot classier and a lot less Raider influenced. :P I’m trying to get a couple sets of singles for opening season. Whoohoo!
Would be nice if the irresponsible season ticket holders wouldn’t sell to the anonymous Craigslist thug but there ya have it.
I noticed that Sunday Adam where they have attached Wires and Cables so an Over head camera gives lots of good angles. Hopefully the results will be better on T.V. Best line my 7 year old had was at the end of the 4th Quarter, My son looked at the scoreboard back at the field and then to my face, and “Said well I guess we and 49ers do not get any Free Tacos” My brother , and 18 year old son laughed. 7year old repeated same joke 5 times until the 18 year old called him a “one-hit wonder!” Good family time and I treasure those things the most!
No more free tacos! Love it.
It can be fun for the family, it’s just that some people really try to ruin for everyone else. Kinda like this blog. :P
I’m somewhat surprised that it’s still this bad there though. Cops were supposed to be in and out of there taking out the drunks and the thugs.
Santa Clara might clear all this up. Hope so. Fans shouldn’t have to put up with that crap.
Yeah, we finally have the overhead cam! About time. :P
Rebel, i like to consider myself a hardcore Niner fan but its a shame when people get drunk and push little kids!
CK has alot of potential and with the right coaching will do very well for us in the future. However for now i would like for CK to continue to improve his skills and learn about defenses so he is ready when the time comes.
Thanks Chicago, He still had a great time , I just put on my shoulders and no big deal. There are still great Fans out their! Hope all is well with you. Hope Ck develops, That was fun to see live how eaisly he could toss the rock! Still seemed Green so I think the bottom line is the Coaching staff is doing the best they can with Alex and CK but still being competative.
I believe it’s has to do with the Raiders sucking so bad for so long, they’ve jumped ship and a lot of them take that gangsta-thug mentality across the Bay with them. It pretty much sucks to bring your kids to the games now.
Benny- I agree with you about the overwhelming whine and bitch fest, the same 3 or 4 guys win or lose, sling out crap left and right hoping it will stick. Is Alex great? No. Is he good enough? We’ll see, the TEAM hasn’t made it that far yet. Is he on OUR team? Yes.
Bray,
NFL……. Not For Long. Lol.
I agree with Jordo! Average career of an NFL player – 3.3 years. Average career of an NFL QB – 4.44 years. Not for long indeed.
Then there’s the Niners QB, 7+ years and counting.
Ribico,
With that analogy, Alex Smith will play for 36 years. Everybody knows Alex has 9 lives! Lol
Whats the career avg for QB’s that Jordon has liked?
TX, depends if we are including the arena and semi-pro leagues. We all know that’s where Jordo’s faves end up.
Now that’s what I’m talking about!
“He’s doing a nice job. He brings in a different dynamic when we bring him in there.”
Follow up GR question,
Maybe so, but what other NFL team utilizes their backup to this degree while taking plays out of the hands of their starting QB who you say you have all the faith in because he is a winning QB??
Hofer,
That would have been a good one for after his last response.
Jack,
Taking your lead… : )
Great question. I’ll ask him next time.
See now you would be grilling him instead of asking the tough questions? In the defense of Smith Hofer, I’d have to end the interview. Lol.
Jordo, did you drink your lunch?!!
Great questions Grant, now of-course if you asked those questions to slick Jim. He may of gotten moody and upset with you.
Wow Grant,
went right at him. I would have been more subtle. You got some interesting answers though.
Roman said, “Kaepernick is the backup quarterback right now. He’s really in an understudy role. We need him to make improvement, so we need him out there on the field.”
I’ve NEVER EVER heard of a team that was winning make an emphasis of improving their backup by sticking him in a game during key moments. Unless their plan is to………..
get value for him and trade him off next year! Bravo Bay =D
And leave yourself with average for the long haul. Great plan Benny.
So where is all this proof that CK is the answer?!? I’m not a SMith homer.. all I know is we were 4-1 going into the Giants game. And all I know is we were int he NFC Championship games last year.
“And leave yourself with average for the long haul. Great plan Benny.”
Bay, that may be their plan but how do you know CK is even average? What stats, facts, seasonal game accomplishments, etc, etc?? You basing your comments on hope son! He doesn’t walk on water to date!
@ Hofer, we don’t know what CK has but the coaching staff sure seems hell bent on getting him reps. Why?
I think the coaches want to see what they have. I do not think they have made a decision yet, nor should they. As stated earlier – CK has not yet proven much of anything except that he has a lot of very raw talent. But at some point with the reality of the cap, the expense of keeping both AS and CK becomes untenable. Maybe as soon as this Spring, when the 49ers have to decide whether they are are all-in on Alex’s next two years of money.
I understand it, and it may be almost unavoidable, because you need to make that informed choice. BUT – you don’t want to completely screw up your offensive rhythm and lose games.
I do think JH and Roman will pick their spots more carefully going forward.
If they’d leave well enough alone we might not look so damned disjointed.
I think they’re just trying out new wrinkles. Last year it was the jumbo, this year it’s the college throwback stuff.
Jumbo worked, this thing here is… dunno, not working. It’s very Sing/Raye -like. Just do it over and over and hope that eventually it will work. Great way to kill a second down, that’s all I know.
At least give CK some play action or pass options… or something. It’s so obvious what he’s going to do.
I have to admit it seems weird to me that they’re doing this. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Adam,
You just got your 1st clue. It is officially broken. Didn’t you see the game. It is broken.
I saw this team beat two good teams on the road so far this season.
When they do what they do well, it’s definitely NOT broken. When they execute on both sides of the ball it’s NOT broken. When they play smart, take care of the football and execute it’s NOT broken.
What you want to do all day, every day is blame Smith for everything. Let’s call Al Gore because Smith is responsible for global warming – actually there’s more hot air on this board but whatever. It doesn’t work the way you want it to work. I’ve said this a hundred times: Elite QBs do not grow on trees, if they did, everyone would have a top 5 guy. Where’s our elite QB? Where’s he going to come from?
Sure, we could have gone out for the Manning thing – and lost a good chunk of the roster in the process – but we didn’t. It is what it is. A couple of you guys wanted “anyone but Smith” last season. There was Kolb and there was Orton and Carson Palmer, then there “JJ The Savior” who couldn’t make it out of training camp and now we wax poetic about Shaun Hill or the kid from Ball State who couldn’t read. This should tell you something: elite QBs don’t grow on trees. We have a guy who most times can beat most of the others out there. Occasionally he falls flat, he can struggle (no doubt) but he’s making progress.
Lame plays and experimenting during a game is NOT the way to win. I’ve played some and I see it, the average Joe on the street sees it. Mooch, Prime, Dwight Clark, Troy Aikman and others saw it. Guys here saw it. It’s not that magical or mysterious.
It’s not all on the coaches, this last game was a combination of stupidity or hubris (on their part) and a complete meltdown in other phases due to who knows what? Lack of focus, preparation? Bad pizza? It was a perfect storm. Simple as that.
Wasn’t all on one guy. But we drill you on that every week. Doesn’t make much difference though – you just go be you. ;)
Bay,
Hofer has t either! Lol. That being said, ill bet you that Kap plays again this Thursday and the writing is on the wall Bay.
How come no one wants to answer my tough Question? Benny’s agenda is crystal clear. Trade away the QB with the highest ceiling? Right……
Proof? Please… I’m waiting. Again.. not saying he doesn’t but why mess with your team chemistry mid-season when you’re 4-1. It’s lame and retarded. But please again… your proof and reasoning CK is the answer?
There are no legitimate facts that the backup will produce winning results. It’s all conjecture right now. He has the tools as long as he learns to play from the pocket, but many have had the tools and didn’t produce. TBD.
Benny,
Why do you keep saying 4-1? Is it because Smith played like crap and now we’re 4-2? It couldnt be due to Kap playing. Kap played when we were 2-1 and 3-1 as well. Our record is 4-2 and that’s Smith’s record as well.
Because the game plan completely changed going into the Giants game. CK went from like 7-8 plays to almost 20. Alex threw 3 picks and def could have played better… at the same time he was never really given a chance to build any momentum.
I’m not saying CK isn’t the QB of the future… but the way they have been using him just doesn’t make sense in the long run for THIS year. If Alex sucked all year and we were barely winning then yes it could be discussed. But the “we played horrible teams” does NOT hold any water. Any team can beat any team at anytime
Benny,
You are mistaken. Kap played 4 snaps in the 1st half. Were you aware of that? He played another 3 while Alex was playing catch with the NY Giants defense. he played the rest of his snaps when the game was our of reach due to the “Catch” session Alex Smith had with his new favorite target, Antrelle Rolle. The giants safety that had more catches from alex than Vernon Davis did.
Now you need to get your facts straight before you come up here guessing. These Smith badgers will put you in your place. They don’t hate Alex, but they like facts!
23… you really need to get yourself a girl mate ;) you spend entirely way too much time here arguing a cause you’ll never win. After we smash Seattle Thursday you’ll back track once again… come meet us at the E-Pole on the South side parking lot Thursday. I want to see what Delusional person looks like in person!
Benny,
Lets keep it to sports. It gets ugly here when it gets personal. Ill take care of my personal life and you take care of yours, deal? When it gets ugly up here, I can be the ugliest. Lets stay away from the personal stuff.
Benny,
I couldn’t break bread with a Smither. We may win the game.i hope we do. I want us to. But it won’t be because Slex Smith did much to help. He usually never does. It’s all on the defense!!
23jordan whatever he says, Benny it smells like chicken to me. Give him a big hug/crack for me if he meets you at pole E.
Good point, I have not either.
Nice Job Grant. That is how you ask the tough questions.
Thanks a lot, Rocket.
Just to set the record straight as far as i can remember there has never been a super bowl champion that has used rotating QB’s within a game.
There have been many champions that have used multiple starting QB’s during the season and into the playoffs.

OC, thanks for the post but almost all of these were due to injury – not the same scenario.
But none in the past decade. Why not the Steelers as I suggested in the last blog?
BS,
Because it came from you so it’s classified as BS!
23jordan/Is Alex Smith injured, are you really that stupid or are you pretending?
AXEL,
Are you an AZZ or are you pretending?
Axel, you must be new here or otherwise you needn’t have asked that question.
If you are new, welcome!
Isn’t that the ’72 Dolphins?
How can ppl be so in love with Alex? We just saw last Sunday what a true elite qb looks like. He has a better o-line, backs, & recievers & the guy still gets excuses! Alex seems like a great stand up guy. But he’s a mediocre qb plain & simple. This is his ceiling. He is dependant on a very good run game & elite defense to succeed. The only time he has ever showed me anything are against a bad/terrible D.
Obviously you missed the Saints playoff game last year… he showed nothing there. Straight up sucked… just got lucky
The Saints all of last season had a horrible defense. The joke was that the Saints offense had to score 38 points a game because the Saints defense was going to give up 37 points a game. Same problem this year.
Yes, lets enjoy that one game from last season.
Not every team is going to have a GREAT defense. The fact is, we still won and Smith broke a record doing it.
It is what it is. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
I think we have to be careful what we wish for, there are probably 15-20 other QBs out there starting that are not as good as Smith, in several respects. Up to the Giants game he was making some good decisions and seeing some things on the field. Not to take anything away from Amukamara and Rolle who are pretty good players in their own right.
What we’re all hoping for is an elite Top 5 Montana type guy. The problem is: if they were easy to find, everyone would have one.
Kap’s a difference maker. Alex isnt.
Proof? Everyone here seems to know something the rest of us don’t. Where did CK show he is a difference maker in the NFL? Please enlighten us =)
Benny,
I agree, Alex is the X factor! lol.
What Kap is remains to be seen. We do know that Kap is capable of throwing 3 picks in 15 minutes just like Alex did. We do know that Kap can throw 35 yards on a rope and Smith can’t. We know that Kap has 4.4 speed and Smith does not. We do know that Smith has confidence issues and Kap doesn’t. We do know that Alex Smith is being replaced by the 2nd string guy in games because that 2nd string guy brings an element to the game that Smith does not have. Those are the things we know!
yeah, Alex is mostly an X factor on the sideline when the non-X factor is on the field running the offense
JS,
Alex is elite. You must have missed the game Sunday. Smith threw darts to #26 in white. Oh that’s right, Alex was wearing red! Oh well. That’s the X factor!
“Kap’s a difference maker.”
So his sacks taken are for shorter losses than Smith’s or is it the incompletions look better and the receivers *should* have caught those? He can run. But so can Smith. Both did a lot of it in college.
CK is a good athlete, nice kid and has a hell of an arm and *may* be a difference maker some day. Nobody knows yet. I personally want to see him succeed but it needs to be at the right time with the right set of circumstances.
Yanking these guys in and out in the first third of the season seems odd to me. Too cute when really all they need to do is run the stuff that gets them wins.
Kaps difference making pushed them out of scoring range multiple times on Sunday.
Did you guys watch Payton last night!!! OMG, he torched the Chargers!
Chicago,
Please don’t remind them of that! Lol
Jord, I was just amazed how Payton and Broncos came back from being down by 24 points and beat the H out of the chargers! how about Rivers throwing 4 INTs and two fumbles! After watching the chargers get torched, some how i felt a little better!!!
Chicago, maybe SD can use JJ??
*LOL*
Chicago,
I hate Rivers, but I have to admit, I’d trade Smith for him and throw in a 3rd rounder. He throws the ugliest floater but it gets there most of the time. He’s a competitor and he’s cocky as hell, but he makes plays. Good ones and bad ones!
Jordo- As my son says- Philip pickortwoagame Rivers! He’s cocky as hell for sure, but takes way too many chances, he’s kind the opposite of Alex as far as that goes. But that’s probably why you want him.
Bray,
I like that edge. It’s better to have it than not to have it. That’s why I would rather have him. That’s what playing QB is all about, having confidence and taking chances. That’s why you like Smith because that’s what he doesn’t do! Lol. You left yourself open for that one Bray. Old Bray, my man!
Jordo
Have u considered rooting for the chargers? They have a QB u like , throw deep every other play and seem to have that edge that u talk about.
Just saying
Bos,
I’m working on that right now. Thanks for the referral. This Smith character ain’t workin out! But you know that already! Lol
PATIENCE YOUNG GRASHOPPER im sure AS will come around. We all know where u stand on AS I just want to know RIGHT NOW 10/17 2:38 EST Do u think that CK is a better player than AS and is more ready to lead us to the SB? or R u just anxious to start the CK (post AS era) early and r willing to live with the growing pains?
Huh! I thought Gary Payton retired.
LOL
The only reason Peyton HAD a chance to comeback was because the Chargers do not know how to hold on to the ball with a 24 point lead. When you’re up that big, it isn’t necessary to chuck the ball all over the place. Just run the ball or make some short, low-risk completions. But instead he had two pick-sixes (if I remember correctly) and gave up good field position from those INTs.
So Peyton should split some of that credit for the comeback with Rivers and the offense.
a Smith and a Kap dont = a Manning as teh brothers showed this week. How many idiot media writers are now drinking kool aid and telling us its better to have Smith then Peyton Manning? Bull sheet!
Now as a football fan speaking, anybody that would compare Payton or Eli to either CK or Alex is crazy simply based on the current body of work!
However, as a Niner fan i would love for either Ck and Alex to shatter any record and bring us home a few trophies but until then Manning brothers are completely a different type of QBs!
The problem, as was reported, bringing in Manning would have cost roster spots elsewhere.
Where would you have cut? Who would you have let go?
The return on investment and the opportunity cost involved with that were pretty risky. Maybe it would have worked out but you still have to ask: who do you cut to afford Manning?
Greg Roman says ” We like Alex Smith as our quarterback. Alex Smith won a lot of football games the past couple years for us. He’s a winner, he’s our quarterback and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
That’s all that matters kids. WINNING GAMES. But of course the haters will say “what is he suppose to say”.
Just beat SEA and we will hear the crying and excuses til the Monday nighter.
Or crap all over the field against Seattle and feel 23Jordan unleash a fury the likes of nothing you’ve ever seen. A fury that will have the Smithers scared to show their screen names on this blog for weeks to come!! Lol
Howd you like that one prime??
In your case false predictor, we are still waiting for at least one thing to come true. To date you are O for O.
At least you are consistent. Maybe you can help Alex?
Ooh, beware the Jordo, slayer of internets!
Sounds like you are really relishing that opportunity. What happened to pulling for the team, no matter what?
>>A fury that will have the Smithers scared to show their screen names on this blog for weeks to come!! Lol
Yeah, usually I steer clear of the zoo when the chimps start flinging their feces from their cages.
Whats your plan B if the Niners win? Unleash a wimpering the likes we haven’t seen since you vowed to leave the board?
Ah yes… the fury that ruins 1,000 virgins.
Here we go. Again.
Who the hell knows if Roman will be here next season, he might get a head coaching job from a division two team
Neal,
If Alex keeps playing like this, Roman will be here next year, book it!
Hey you got it right, if Alex keeps winning, everyone will be back next year, including Roman, try proof reading dumb guy!!!!!!!!!!!
Jordan,
Kind of a joke, that Roman would get a division two job.
Axel you are new here. 23 does not think, he just screams for attention. He does not know what he is talking about as you see in his sentence structure. It’s just all noise to gain some attention. He is harmless, kinda like the ugly puppy next door!
axel,
Like last game genius. Just fall back clown, you’re out of your league. Kids report to room 103. Bye bye.
Axel, you related to Axel Rose, are you BS son, he wrote a song about about you sweet child of mine.
Every time you say “book it” these last couple years, I know the Niners are winning and all is good with the world. Keep it up.
Woot! Niners all the way!
i have never been a alex smith fan he sucksssssssssssssssss! he will break alot of heart in the bay area if he keeps playing for the niners guaranteed
Benny, I have been around long enough to remember when Frankie Albert was the Qb and there was a contingent of fans who wanted Y.A Tittle and when Y.A was the Qb they wanted Brody, when Brody was the Qb they wanted George Mira etc, etc, etc. The point being these fans who are always disappointed ,it’s in their genes, and Grant panders to these people…Sad but true!
It’s Brodie, but yeah.
My favorite was many years back, when both QBs had stunk it up pretty bad – was it DeBerg and Bull maybe? – The crowd at Candlestick started chanting, “We want *someone else*”.
Sometimes, replacing your QB is the right move. Sometimes, it’s just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. I’ll wait for Harbaugh and company to make this call.
Grumpy Guy, I stand corrected, it was a loooning time ago. Who were those guys, Norm Snead, Tom Owen, Scott Bull… Hard times.
JH/GR may have outcoached themselves…
Hacksaw, we also had Joe Reed and Dennis Morrison for a game or two each after Brodie quit and Spurrier got hurt in ’74. Now THAT was a long year.
Thats because “us fans”want a good QB. nothing wrong with that
If you objectively take a look at some of the other QBs out there, in many cases we’re better off.
The problem is, we’re now judging every QB by the Montana standard. We’re spoiled beyond belief. The bar is really high and identifying QB talent has got to be difficult, otherwise every team would have an ace.
As I said two years ago, I’d have taken Ponder in the draft, probably Jake Locker too. CK’s a nice get but he may be too gimmicky to be useful as thee heir. Not sure. In many ways I like Tolzien better, he may be the hidden gem out of that QB draft – and we have him. Every once in a while you get an undrafted guy (Victor Cruz comes to mind) who comes in and blows the doors off.
Adam the key word is “objectively” there are some that do not understand/know the meaning of the word.
<< — Mira's helmet.
Couldn't resist. :P
Maybe the coaches know something we all don’t. If Alex isn’t the answer then start CK. I just hope all this mid-season mess and cuteness doesn’t completely derail this season. Another thing no one is talking about is the locker room… if coaches create this controversy and the team splits then this year is a wash.
BennyBlanco,
What you say is true, what the coaches see and know is different from what the fan knows. I think what is different is this need for perfection that many here on this blog demand. This is a “Game” that is played by “Humans” and every human that I have met in my life makes mistakes and it is the same for these players and coaches. It is not realistic to expect perfection every time these guys play…Just sayin.
True Hack…
It just gets so irritating seeing the same people say the same ignorant things over and over and over again. Going into the Giants game… Smith 4-1 and #1 rated QB in the league. So he has a bad game… so has Rodgers, Rivers, Cutler, Romo, Newton, ect. When we win big again they’ll disappear and pretend to say Alex played ok and blah blah. That’s why I hardly post here anymore… it’s been over taken by people that have nothing better to do then make ignorant statements on every blog regarding Smith. Grant has no choice but to continue to fuel the fire because all his other posts have like 2% the amount of comments as ones regarding A.Smith
BB. Yeah I hear you.
@benny
“Another thing no one is talking about is the locker room… if coaches create this controversy and the team splits then this year is a wash.”
I actually did bring it up earlier today. But it doesn’t get replies because it isn’t directly about Alex Smith. Win or lose, this blog is obsessed with Alex Smith. I wrote a post about that, and the usual suspects bashed me for it.
Love the ‘bull dog’ tenacity in your questions Grant. You earned your keep today bud (lol)!
I think it might be worth mentioning in all this CK talk is that apparantly the coaches feel he has made some positive strides this season.
We are not on the practice field like the coaches who daily make evaluations on players. We don’t feel the pulse of the team in the locker room do way coaches do.
It seems very evident that CK is doing something right in practice that has captured the coaches attention and perhaps that of the players as well.
My take is like the majority here who feel that CK is not ready to start this year. But a great deal will depend on AS’ progress.
For those who keep flashing AS’ won/loss record covering last season, please be reminded that our defense and special teams played lights-out and gave the offense many opportunities to score on a smaller field.
This season our defense has not been ‘lights-out’ especially against the Vikings and the NYG.’ I would have loved to see a more refined and more matured AS put these games on his back (like he did against the Saints)and show that he can win when the defense/sp.tms are not on their game. It did not do it.
I for one would like to see the hyperbole of AS having a 17-4 record being put to rest. After two bad games by the defense and AS not picking up the offense in these two games only proves to me that AS has not made big strides from last season.
Is CK7 the answer right now? NO!
But if AS continues to flatline in games when the offense could use a boost, we may have to get used to the CK7 project, like it or not!
I expect a big game from the whole team against Seattle. And I expect a big game from our team captain as well. If our defense lags, AS must take the reins and find a way to lead us to a win.
I’ll be looking for this, and I think the coaching staff will be doing the same.
*He did not
AES, you have lost some credibility. Hyperbole regarding the record of 17-4! It’s a fact. Another fact is no other starting QB has been success rotating QB’s in and out. AES, are you too focused on the drama here and put your foot knowledge on the back burner? I don’t get your comment at all! Maybe it’s better to understand the difference between factual comments and hyperbole/agenda based comments.
*football*
Rex Grossman went 13-3 and made it to a Superbowl behind a strong defense.
Mark Sanchez went 22-10 and made it to 2 AFCCG behind a strong defense.
Hyperbole may be the wrong word for the insistent repetition of Alex’ record but the point remains – the record is meaningless. It’s been proven over and over that average QBs can be carried.
MSC67
Wjat u say is true about Rex and Sanchez but they are different stylistically that AS is. they are both “gunslingers” where in one game they throw for 4 tds and the next throw 4 picks All the criticism of those guys was: geez if they just let the great D play and not loose the game (in other words be a game manager) everything would be fine. AS is the opposite, people gripe that he doesnt take chances and just “manages” games but we saw that this can be sucessfull in the NFL. dilfer and b.johnson won superbowls and they are significantly WORSE than AS (but their respective D’s were better than that of the 9ers) . If grossman had more of AS in him he would still be QB of the bears
“I for one would like to see the hyperbole of AS having a 17-4 record being put to rest. After two bad games by the defense and AS not picking up the offense in these two games only proves to me that AS has not made big strides from last season.”
Yeah, except it’s not really an exaggeration. He’s credited with those wins and losses. It’s how it’s scored.
Granted, outside of a few games, Smith isn’t the guy that can consistently carry an entire game. Most of the time in that 17-4 Harbaugh-era record though, he’s positively contributed. This last game you can certainly say he contributed to the loss. Really though, not much was working, runs were stuffed for the most part, the Giants learned from the last game and doubled Vernon, our D was atrocious and Akers suddenly got cold. Turnovers trump everything, though. Two ill-advised throws and one ridiculous one that got away will certainly kill the game.
Aikman had it right when he talked about Jimmy Johnson saying: “It’s not the number of good plays you make that wins, it’s the fewest bad mistakes.” Good advice.
Stats-wise, Smith is still tracking above last season’s avg., in all but the yards category. The INTs will hurt that particular mark but otherwise… still tracking above, last I checked. So I’d say there’s some progress but also a few setbacks.
I’m not too worried about it. But I agree, things could happen that make the CK experiment go in to overdrive. But that’s why we watch. All part of the spectacle. :)
@Adam
Our views are not that far apart. But to me, the fact that we are still discussing AS in this light is very disappointing to me.
I really thought that after last season and the two playoff games under his belt that Alex was ready to go to the next level. I won’t go as far as saying that he has regressed, but he has not made the large strides in the areas of concern.
These areas include cutting back on the check downs, using his new weapons, compensating for a struggling defense and special teams, and having better pocket presence. The latter point in multi-faceted which includes taking the extra micro-second to wait for his receiver to get opened. Looking to a second option if the first is not opened. Not taking an ill-advised sack are just a few of things that I need to see from my starting QB.
I can still hear U.Meyers words echoing in my ears when he said that AS is going to need some time to learn the system, but when he fully understands it he will succeed (paraphrased).
I’m still hanging my faith in AS on those words. But AS needs to show improvement over a span of 4-6 games rather than 1 step forward and 1 step back.
This has nothing whatsoever to do with CK. I’m not asking for AS’ head on a platter, so CK can take over. That is up to the coaches. I’m coming from a personal standpoint that by now, AS should be vastly better. It’s still somewhat early in the season, so my patience is resolute that AS can improve on the points that I mentioned. But the time-clock to begin to start showing improvement in the said areas is ticking.
AES, what was AS’s QB rankings before the Giants game and what is it now? What is the 9ers record? Do you feel overreaction is the answer. How many QB’s this year had 2, 3, or 4 INT games? How many were so-called elite? How many are ranked behind AS on the QB ratings? You need to try to keep this one loss in perspective. It’s one loss and not all on the QB. Flush it and enjoy the win Thursday over Seattle. Good times.
A good look at some of the key plays from Sunday.
http://ninerchatter.blogspot.com/2012/10/49ers-rewind-and-tribute-to-low-hanging.html
Jack, you are the man!!! I truly appreciate the pics and the break down. Its so unlike Alex to pass on the check down to throw it to WR! It might have been the ghost of the NFC championship game and the low WR production that forced Alex and the offensive game plan to be more focused on the pass!
I completely agree with your assessment about the special teams! If Akers had made the field goal and we did not give up the big return on the first position of the third Q this may have been a whole different game! I am very concern about our special teams play. If Akers continues to miss key field goals or our coverage team gives up huge plays then most likely Alex will have much more pressure on him to score points!!! Anyway, excellent read. Thank you
If only we could live life in hindsight. Should have, could have and would have would make life so much easier. Nice work Jack Hammer, NOT!
Thank you for checking it out Axel.
Chicago,
Thanks for checking it out!
Jack,
thanks for the break down. No agenda’s just situations caught on film and facts. More of what we already know.
It was a nice breakdown of the 3 INTs. Now, after 24 games under JH’s tutelage, AS has 30 TDs and now 9 INTs. A very poor game, but in the bigger picture, it’s one game. Let’s see how the team responds against Seattle.
Was there a highlight that you would have liked to see Hofer. Those pictures were pretty much the story of the game offensively.
Jack, thanks for asking, but I’ve flushed that game and I’m now looking forward to winning against Seattle.
Jack welcome to the Hofer Smith hour. No criticism allowed. Not even video evidence. Doesn’t want to see it. Smith is out QB till he’s 50 or so don’t you know.
Jack Hammer, what about not giving the ball to Hunter and Gore? Did that not have any bearing on the game offensively or are you like every other wanna be journalist in the San Francisco area trying to make a name for yourself by pinning it on Alex? The only topic try hards are focusing on.
Bay, thanks for putting words in my mouth – seems to be your value here. Answer for other fans that post here while you add little in fact or substance. I will say you did have one good read today. It’s been a while…reading too much from your agenda brother I guess.
Here you go Axel.
http://ninerchatter.blogspot.com/2012/10/49ers-lose-balance-again.html
Jack, respectfully “low hanging fruit” doesn’t mean a thing in your breakdown. What are you trying to articulate? It’s not clear!
I call these pictures, “Alex Smith, caught on tape!” Excellent Job Jack. You the dude!
Lmao!!! Now that was funny.
whatever anyone thinks about Alex Smith, what the coaching staff did on Sunday was terrible. the offense just felt SO disjointed each time Kaep came in then back out. That false start could easily have been due to the change in cadence.
i don’t care who starts. but none of this in one play out the next ish. if you’re going with Smith, stick with what they did last year. And hopefully the upgrades of Manningham and Moss will eventually turn more of those field goals from last year into touchdown.
if you’re going with Kaep, then just go full-on wildcat with Manningham, Moss and VD to go deep. if you practice this stuff like 10% of the time it doesn’t work as well once teams start preparing for it. you need to devote 100% of the limited practice reps you get in a week to work through all the variations and options.
this offensive line kicks ass at run blocking, but sucks in pass protection. Giants d-line hadn’t done ish vs anyone until they got the 9ers o-line to make em look nice.
also they need to target Manningham more often.
and less passes to Delanie Walker. i don’t know if he’s worried about being in a “defenseless receiver” position, but he hasn’t been the same since the jaw injury. concentration is lacking and doesn’t go after the ball.
Add the fact Michael Crabtree does his best disappering acts against tough teams.
Axel, it’s easier and more convenient to scrutinize the QB. Flush this one and focus on the 9ers winning against Seattle.
Now you can add AS to that list. Or is it CK? (lol)
“the offense just felt SO disjointed each time Kaep came in then back out.” Yeah, those 3 plays, whew really disjointed the offense and Alex.
Jack, of course you see it that way. Again, which QB would like to be pulled out for any down on the first two series of any game when the chains are moving?
There were two penalties and a sack I think taken when Kapernick was in.
Hofer,
Why do you think they feel the need to play CK instead of sticking with Smith all game?
Harbaugh’s mantra is the team, the team, the team. He wants to reward players for their effort and hardwork while also utlizing their talents. It worked and now it does not. Move on to the next coaching scheme.
Jack, I deal in facts and GR stated that they feel he brings a “different dynamic to the game”. Clearly it works well when the 9ers are winning the game and not so well when they are behind. I think we see it very sparingly the rest of the year unless the 9ers are well ahead in the 4th qtr.
Axel,
Smith came on the field 4 times in the first half when the game was in doubt. There were 2 runs, a false start on Goodwin, and a pass. By the time he got in during the 2nd half they were down by 14, then it was 1 play, a sweep to MM. The majority of CK’s playing time came after they were already down by 20.
Again, as I said on my blog post, the bigger issue that should be discussed are the misses by Akers. They totally changed the game. This team will not come back from more than a TD down, especially against a decent defense.
Jack, if we see less of the QB shuffle against Seattle, I guess your analysis was off track. JH said it was disruptive so I believe they move away from it with more RB running and passing when appropriate. Stay tuned…
Jack Hammer, never ever ever comeback from being down? Wow, that is pretty bold statement. You have any evidence to support that?
I am hearing a lot of hard statements but very little facts to support it. Is this a peeing contest?
Hofer,
JH did not say it was disruptive. He said the plan was not sound, and it wasn’t. From play 1 throughout the first half it was not sound. They were very off balance between run and pass and it cost them.
I do however agree with you on CK’s playing time on Thursday. If he gets in I would say it is no more than 3 plays, unless they are down by 20 again.
Axel,
They never came back from more than a TD last year against a good team, and so far this year they have not been able to. You can look back at them for yourself.
And don’t try to say Philly was a good team. That defense was terrible last year, and again so far this year. That’s why they just fired the coordinator.
So Jack Hammer a comeback does not count unless its a TD or more? That is obsurd. Having to drive the field and score constitutes a comeback to any normal human being. Detroit Lions last year, Saints in the playoffs. Both were game winning drives resulting in touchdowns. Do those not count by your defintion of comeback or are you gonna tell me those are not good teams and do not count?
Jack,
Below is the question from the presser and JH’s answer (see Grant’s earlier post Harbaugh: “The plan wasn’t the best plan.” Posted on October 14, 2012 by Grant Cohn):
“Certainly QB Colin Kaepernick in the two previous games, very successful plays. Is there ever a fear that by putting him in too much you disrupt the flow of the offense?”
“Yes.”
Axel,
You are now twisting my words. I never said that those comebacks don’t count. I said that this team will not and has not been able to come back from more than 1 TD down against a good team, and that is why the Akers misses were so big on Sunday.
Hofer,
He said there is a fear that it would disrupt the flow, not that it did disrupt it. And I agree with him.
You have nothing, not one quote from a coach where they state that it did in fact disrupt the offensive flow. That is your assumption, based off your dislike of them using Kaepernick.
Jack Hammer, that is the blue print to winning in this league. Get up on an opponent and tee off your pass rush after that. What teams have you seen consistently get down by two or more scores and comeback?
And dont say Denver cause they got lucky on Monday and not so lucky against Atlanta and New England.
You guys act like comebacks after two or more scores against any good team should be capable. It is but very unlikely when you have the unfortunate luxury of teams rushing four and covering with 7. I would like to see you throw into that covergae with the Giants front breathing down your neck?
Jack, you are splitting hairs. There’s strength from humility admitting you are wrong for once. : )
Glad that you agree Axel. So why is no one talking about David Akers? His 2 missed field goals helped create a hole that they could not get out of.
As for me throwing against that Giants D, I can easily throw 3 picks against them, and my cap number would be a lot less than $8million ; )
Hofer your constant protection of Smith especially in. On a week where he may ha ‘ve had his worst game as a pro. Ironic that it comes a week after his “great game” against Buffalo.
So admit you are wrong Hofer ; )
Hofer,
Twisting coaches words to cover Smith’s azz. This blog is going to be a morgue at 9:00 on thursday. We may win but Smith is going to struggle mightily!
Not overreacting at all Hofe. With all due respect, Im not the one who went after CK and the coaching staff.
I’m isolating my comments solely on AS’ progress or lack thereof. I made it clear that I don’t have an agenda to unseat AS. Especially when CK is not ready in my opinion.
I was hopeing to see more from AS at this point. For me, the jury is still out. And that is why I made the comment to Adam that the fact that we are still talking about this is disappointing to me.
Pocket presence
Accuracy
Looking for secondary receivers if the first option is not opened
Cutting back on check downs
Taking ill-advised sacks
Not overreacting, but honestly concerned is the best way to describe my state of mind.
Overcoming the inconsistency issues are areas of concern.
AES,
I asked you which QB’s in the NFL thus far had 2, 3, and 4 INT games this year. Did you see PRivers last night? AS had one we know that because it’s been overly scrutinized. My point is QB’s better than AS have bad games. These guys aren’t robots. AS shouldn’t be under a more powerful microscope because he has a poor game. With his play last year and thus far this year, he’s earned having one poor game. Now on to Seattle…
@Hofe
I’m sure the numbers are there. But I will say this; I’ve seen Brees, Rodgers, Brady, and the Manning brothers put some passes in the oppositions hands with one caveat: They still found a way to either lead their team to a win or least make a good effort in making the score close.
Sorry Hofe, but after AS threw his first INT, he seemed to go downhill from there. He could not shake off the INT and move forward.
AS was the total antithesis of the above mentioned.
AES are you saying that Alex cannot have a bad game and if he does, unable to recover?
AES, some say AS isn’t consistent which is BS. AS hasn’t put two poor games together since JH and team have been here reinforcing what you and I stated back in 2009 and 2010, AS needs good coaching. He will rise to the occasion against Seattle. Good times…
Hoferman – He was horrible in the Vikings game and then again in the Jets’ game. That’s two in a row from where I sit.
Horrible in the Jets game, what game were you watching? It was the run and run again, then run some more show.
Funny how Hofer Smith will not answer a direct question about Smith. No acknowledgement of poor play. It’s always on others. Play calling, o-line, drops, no receivers getting open. Now you all get to see Hofer Smith as I’ve always seen him.
You are like that Nick guy, wanting another 49er fan to admit something he does not believe Bayareafanatic. Are you conducting an interview or survey or are you asking for some sort of vindication because Alex Smith played a poor game?
Bay, when did I say (link please) that AS played well against the Giants? Go back and read the comments. Why do you state something that is absolutely false?
@Axel
I’m saying that he did not recover in this game. How did you see it?
One game AES, it happens to the best of them, and might happen again. It sounds like you want every QB to be to the calibre of those other QB’s. This is not who Alex Smith is and not the way the 49ers operate on offense. Its a very particular system that relies heavily on the run. That is how they are built. The two games they lost this year, what happened to the run emphasis?
Can’t disagree with that, AS needs everything aligned to play well, no balanced, no wins. The team has to play well within the system. If they don’t you see what happens, he has played 3 great games, 2 poor games and one below average. He is not going to win a shoot out even if he had Jerry Rice and Randy Moss in their prime.
@Axel
I have no qualms about playing to our strength which is our run game.
But as we witnessed on sunday, what happens if we fall behind? Do we chuck the game because that type of game does not play to AS’ abilities?
I don’t particularly like the odds under that scenario, do you? You almost make it sound as if we don’t have an exit plan if we fall behind.
With all due respect, your comment does not build a very good case for AS.
Hopefully I’m reading it wrong.
AES the Giants are an exceptional team. They made the 49 ers one dimensional and played a perfect game after they got up. Give credit where its due. You are sounding like they 49ers should have comeback and won no matter what or in fact they cannot?
There are other great teams, QB’s and coaches that bring their A game and can beat the Niners. I think you might have to take losing a little bit better than you are and possibly lower your expectations against good teams. Its a competition, sometimes you win, somtimes you lose.
Alex Smith can win games, he has. He will. Are you saying he cannot under durress?
Axel,
I like the cut of your jib! There is a lot of evaluations of Smith, particularly on this specific blog site, that are wildly slanted. Like any qb, he has good and not so good games. Too many people here look at the good games (and he’s had plenty of them lately) as the exception, and the not so good games as the rule. 9 years of a terrible team, most of them with Smith as QB, can certainly influence people’s ability to objectively perceive what they’re seeing.
You’ve just had an argument where the other guys are essentially trying to say Alex can’t lead a comeback, nor perform under pressures, when in fact, he’s done both, many, many times.
If someone wants to argue with you, and says that the sky is not blue, but it is in fact green, there’s a good chance you’re not going to convince them that it is blue.
@Hofe
I hear ya bud. But I would simply like to see a good run of about 4-6 games from AS to make me feel better about the rest of the season and going into the playoffs. Included in this run would be games in which AS takes the reins and finds a way to win if the defense and special teams lay an egg. I doesn’t even bother me that much if he throws INT’s while taking shots downfield. As long as he can learn to quickly shake them off and stay competitive.
I don’t think that’s asking to much from my starting QB.
Not at all AES, he’s doing his best, he just hasn’t “managed” to do that yet.
Niner Nation has taken notice. One more poor showing by number 11 and the boo birds will return to SF. Maybe the biggest most important game of Smith’s career to date.
Bay,
How many yards does Smith throw for against this secondary? Kap should play more in this game than he has the last 3. His speed will be pivotal in escaping that pass rush.
@ Bay,
I could not agree more, you just don’t know about AS, he can play great on Thursday or he can sucked goose eggs. If he plays a poor game, it will get real ugly at the Stick.
I also hope Niner Nation has their big bad boos ready when AS drives the team down the field, is pulled for #7, who then gives up an 11 yard sack.
When the wildcat is used in a win, it’s a change of pace. When it’s used and you lose, it’s disruptive.
So are turnovers. When you can overcome turnovers and still win you are a very good team. When you can’t overcome turnovers it says a lot about your team as well.
Turnovers are the #1 indicator of winning. That means, nobody can overcome turnovers. You get a fluke once in a while, but you lose the turnover battle, you lose. All that says about your team is that you’re like every other team that’s ever played the game….
@Axel
I said after the game last Sunday that the NYG’ took us to the wood shed. They are the reigning champions and they made that quit clear on Sunday.
I gave them their due.
I also said that we were lacking in all phases of the game from top to bottom.
So as I told Hofe, I have no agenda for or against AS. I would have only liked to have seen his game make some vital improvements over last season. The season is fairly young so time is still on his side.

@AinC
Hence one of my pet-peeves with attributing our 2011 14-4 record to AS, when our defense was lights-out in the turnover dept’ but that’s a different topic (lol).
I noticed your earlier remarks about every QB having a bad game. I have never argued this because all QB’ will have stinkers now and then.
Take another look at the points I provided. I highlighted these points because they have been nagging issues that have followed AS throughout his career.
I merely stated that after a good 2011 regular and post season, I would have thought that AS would be much improved coming into this season.
Those are valid reasons in my book. I don’t expect it (book) to be a bestseller around here (lol), but it is what it is.
