My Week 5 NFL picks.
Dolphins @ Bengals: Dolphins. Miami’s offense averages 4.6 yards per carry. Cincinnati’s defense allows a league-high 5.4 yards per carry. They won’t be able to stop Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas. Miami will win the time of possession and dictate the flow of the game.
Packers @ Colts: Packers. To beat the Packers, you need a good defense. The Colts don’t have one. They give up an average of 27.7 points per game.
Ravens @ Chiefs: Ravens. The Ravens defense can slow down Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs’ No.1-ranked rushing attack. The Chiefs defense cannot slow down Ray Rice.
Browns @ Giants: Giants. The Browns will lose this game and remain winless until December at the earliest.
Eagles @ Steelers: Steelers. Pittsburgh’s home and they’re coming off a Bye. The Eagles are only scoring 16.5 points per game on average.
Falcons @ Redskins: Redskins. The Redskins rush for 171 yards per game and the Falcons give up 146.3. Washington will establish the run early and seize the momentum early at home.
Seahawks @ Panthers: Seahawks. Despite drafting inside linebacker Luke Kuechly in the first round, the Panthers still can’t stop the run. Marshawn Lynch will carry the Seahawks to a win over Carolina.
Bears @ Jaguars: Bears. The Bears run defense will shut down Maurice Jones-Drew, and that will be checkmate.
Titans @ Vikings: Vikings. The Vikings are one of the best teams in the NFL. They’ll take care of business at home against the subpar Titans.
Broncos @ Patriots: Patriots. New England is home, they have better coaches and much more continuity.
Chargers @ Saints: Saints. The Chargers are 3-1, but they’ve only beaten bad teams (the Raiders, the Titans and the Chiefs). When they played a good team (the Falcons) they lost 27-3. Drew Brees will pass for 350 yards and 4 touchdowns, and the Saints will win at home.
Texans @ Jets: Texans. The Jets have absolutely no chance.

Do you ever keep track of your record? As far as I can remember, you’re pretty much always off with your predictions. And whatever happened to the TNF game (Cards @ Rams)? Wrong again???
Here is the LINK to the FRANK GORE STATS. 2012 Gore has more than 5 yards per carry they lose. He has less they win. Guess ESPN just made that stat up and wrote the story up on my behalf….Yeah Right! http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/8479/frank-gore
Doubling down, Chris? You really shouldn’t have. Stats are confusing when presented to those who don’t know what they are looking at. ESPN is obviously including games won where FG had sub 5 Y/A to get that 4.9 Y/A winning average.
2012
GB W – 7.00 Y/A
DET W – 5.24 Y/A
MIN L – 5.25 Y/A
NYJ W – 2.95 Y/A
How in the world do you get that, in 2012, Niners lose more when FG rushes for more than 5? In games where he’s rushed for 5 or more (throw out last week, despite what ESPN is presenting to you, that’s not part of the “rushing for 5 or more” discussion), they’ve only lost once.
They are not “losing more than winning” when FG runs for 5. Capisce?
Thank you for the clarification.
Chris, the 49ers are 2-1 in games (Wins vs Packers and Lions, Loss vs Vikings) Frank Gores rushes for 5 or more yards per carry. I don’t know what you are talking about.
It’s pretty amazing how quickly the new stadium is going up.

I’m glad the 49ers are finally getting a new stadium but I’m concerned about losing the home field advantage of playing at Candlestick Windtunnel Park.
I disagree with 3 picks Grant:
Seattle – the replacements are gone. Interceptions no longer count as 7 points.
Vikings – just as the Cardinals mirage was broken Thursday, the Viqueens will return to normal this week.
Dolphins – are you stoned?
Ya the Dolphin game is wayyy off. Dalton & AJ Green our becoming the Best Combo in the NFL.
And I like the Panthers to beat the Seahawks in Carolina. The Panthers had a crushing loss last week in Atlanta so I see them bouncing back. Also the Seahawks are a completely different team when they’re not at home.
Seahawks coming off a loss too, they’ll be motivated and not want to fall back in the division. You’re right about their road record though.
Ha! Allow me to retort.
The Seahawks and Dolphins are playing two teams that really can’t stop the run.
Also, the Seahawks and Dolphins can completely shut down the Panthers’ and Bengals’s respective run games, making them one dimensional.
The Seahawks and Dolphins match up well this weekend.
@ Grant
* Seahaks? I like it, but should it be Sea Hacks? or Sea Hags?
@brotha the proper term is “SeaBastards”
Alright we’ll see who’s right & who’s wrong.
I like these Teams chances playing at home.
The Dolphins are playing much better this season than I expected. I think the game will be close, but the Red Dalton to AJ Green combo gives Cinci the edge in this one I reckon.
Seahawks defense is very very good, and I expect to see Newton and the Panthers really struggle offensively in this one. I agree with Seahawks winning.
Seahawks and Bengals win those games. Book it.
maybe; “SeaHooligans”
Good points Grant, I agree with your picks, especially your take on the vikings. Some of Senior Cohn’s points in the past few weeks were the vikings were weak and the 49ers should be embarrased. Well, You play the packers and the Lions, then go to the Metro dome, and the vikings are pretty darn good! I think the ninners will lose two more times maybe three this year but will be good, Also what is your take on the Def’s of the NFC west? I feel they are four of the best of the NFL, The ninners have better steady QB play but they are not elite, Rams are also pretty tough, going to be a fun year.
Gotta disagree on the Dolphins and Seahawks. The Bungles are a decent team and I don’t like the fish on the road. I see the Panthers winning a close one barring a Cam turnover near the end.
I could see the Skins upset and with all the injuries the Giants have, perhaps a Browns win in New York?
I like Bengals at home vs Fins
Agree Steelers win, but close game
I think Falcons might get a win in Washington
I like Vikes to win at home, Titans not the team to expose them
Seahawks/Panthers a toss-up; I suppose I’ll lean towards Panthers
While I know that an RSS feed like this blog is technically a lot different than Facebook, I gotta say that if I were able to block or hide some posters’ comments I would do so. I’m not happy about feeling that way because listening to minority opinions is usually an intellectually healthy thing to do so that we examine our own reasoning, but a few in our community seem to have some sort obsessive-complusive dogmas that they parrot endlessly. Maybe they like the attention (positive or negative), but they suck up all the oxygen on this site. Nothing new, but tedious & vacuous in the extreme.
I’m off to enjoy some sunshine, but I’m sure that when I check back there will be a spirited debate ongoing as to whether Jeff George or Todd Marinovich would make a better replacement for Alex.
Jeff George for sure.
@ Clem
Probably right between those two, but I kinda thought you’d go for Todd; he’d fit in with some in your community up there; (Anglofarians)! ;>)
Grant,
What’s your best guess on who sits if Jacobs gets on the 46 man roster tomorrow? I know the popular belief is Celek, but he has been a part of the offense the last 2 weeks. I’m thinking it may be Ginn…
Alex Smith throwing out the first pitch at the Giants game tonight!
Jack maybe he can check it down to home plate?
Prime,
This might be the first time ever that they need a cutoff man to get the first pitch to home plate…
Jack, actually, he overthrows most misses so they need a pitcher backing up the plate.
Hopefully Buster has a good verticle leap.
They could’ve had Kaep run the read option to home plate.
Just so long as Delanie Walker isn’t the ceremonial catcher. He’d be 50/50 to drop it.
Good picks, including upsets, so far Grant!
Thanks, Ribico. I strongly felt the Dolphins would beat the Bengals.
