Week 7 grades: Coaching

SAN FRANCISCO – The 49ers beat the Seahawks 13-6. Here are the grades for the 49ers’ coaches.

Coaching: A. The story of this game is the offensive adjustments Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman made at halftime. They only called 10 rushing plays in the first half – not enough – and as a result the 49ers were losing by three at halftime. In the second half, the 49ers ran the ball down the Seahawks’ throat with traps and whams the Seahawk’s No.2-ranked run defense couldn’t handle. Harbaugh confirmed this after the game, saying “We ran a few traps and had them in the right look.”

The Seahawks coaches, on the other hand, did not adjust. On defense they couldn’t stop the traps and whams, and on offense they could not come up with any play-action passes to complement their running game. Credit Harbaugh’s crew for making the adjustments Pete Carroll’s bunch did not.

    IN JH we trust!!!!!

  2. Jack Hammer says:

Thought Roman also did a good job using motion with Davis to open up the box. Especially on the TD drive, and the one that followed.

I’d say a B+ for the coaches; it took way too long to react to the fact that the passing game wasn’t going to lead the way. Seems to me they had it right early on–run, run, run, then throw it up, to keep the D loose, and take some shots. Complete some short ones, too, and let’s play West Coast sometimes. But make the run the basis of the O. Instead, they fell in love with the pass, for some reason. I was shaking my head on one posession when they passed on first down. Incomplete. Passed on second down. Incomplete. Guess what? At third and ten, you pretty much have to pass. That means we completely got away from our core competency…not a good coaching decision, I think.
But give them credit, as you said, Grant. They “got” it in time, and won the game. Woo-hoo!

On another area, I wonder what grade you’d give the refs? I was in a loud sports bar, so couldn’t hear any of the announcing. But it seemed to me that the refs weren’t calling ANY of the extremely blatant penalties the Seahawks committed, including holding our WR’s consistently, and the facemasking of Alex Smith, right off the top of my head. Personally, I’d give them a D, with a warning.

I’m happy the replacement refs were back. Get another paycheck.

That hit to AS head is exactly what the NFL has been adament about stopping. And the refs didn’t call it. Had that hit not happen or the penalty called, we get a 1st down (AS completes that pass) and keep the momentum.

HaHa! DS, you’re pretty observant! That facemask by BE on PW in the endzone defending that pass attempt. That spear to FG, helmet to ribs after he was down. Db’s “getting away with murder”! Poor officiating just drives me nuts!

    just got home from game…

    the TEAM looks amazing..

    alex smith? not so much…

crowd was mad at him the first half and booed HIM off the field

wide open receivers the whole first half, bad throws….

this team can go to the top, but can Alex take them there?

man, i hope so but i don’t see it, anywhere

    • DS94everXev says:

      From 3rd King?

Please. You have no idea what he’s spewed out over the years newbie. As good as 23 is. Who you like.

And how come the fans there seem to see things that the announcers don’t? Sorry. Intoxication is likely involved. Not the announcers by the way.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

      King,
Would these be the same fans who were calling for Carr not so long ago? Fan in the Stands Credibility: Zero.

  5. jsand3030 says:

hear that DS? Wide open WRs ……

    • Willie niner says:

I agree many wide open WR ……many times its harder to miss them than finding them…. Just saying

  6. Willie niner says:

I don’t hate or love AS but I agree with 3rdking I don’t think AS is going to take us to the promised land however the stats show differently but I still think that the NINERS need to find a QB that is going to fill S. Young,J. Montanas shoes etc.etc.etc

    • Nick says:

Even a Jeff Garcia would do

      • Rusty_in_OC says:

Thanks for the laugh, Nick. Maybe you don’t remember the nonstop cries of “Happy Feet” the “fans” used to throw at Garcia. Never occurred to them that running his ass off was the only way he could survive that O line. Think the braying about Alex here is harsh? This blog would EXPLODE with a Jeff Garcia under center. But then, that’s “fans”. The backup QB is ALWAYS their favorite player.

    • shoupbj says:

The problem with Smith is he is to cerebral. He is good if he knows where everyone is going to be and is given a lot of time. But if play breaks down he struggles to ad-lib, I dont think he has the natural instincts that good qb’s have.
The seahawks routinely put 8 men in the box, its a good thing the niners could still run on them in this formation because they certainly were able to throw against seatles man coverage.

  7. Willie niner says:

    I meant WR’s

  8. drsgrosse says:

Roman screwed up again. After the running game got dominant and Smith got into a bit of a rhythm, he brings in Kaepernick on second and goal. Stupid.

Smith had a bad night. The refs were worse. The injury to Gore, which will probably bother him all season, was on s spear when he was already down. No call. Lots of non-calls last night.

  9. 49eraddict says:

It seems to me that they put Kap in and shut down Alex’s rhythm and roll he was on??? Any thoughts on that? Sorry if already talked about above..Im leaving for work and no time to read until I come home tonight.
