49ers Week 8 grades: Offense

Here are the grades for the 49ers offense from their 24-3 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Quarterbacks: A. Alex Smith played one of the best games of his life. He only attempted 19 passes, but he completed 18 of them, and Delanie Walker dropped the one incompletion. That’s a 95 percent completion percentage. Smith broke Fran Tarketon’s record for the most completed passes in a game in which he threw just one incompletion. Smith mostly threw short and intermediate throws, but he was perfect on those. His only knock is he took four sacks because he held onto the ball too long in the pocket.

Offensive line: C. They got manhandled a bit both in the run game and in pass protection. Defensive linemen Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell broke through to the backfield a few times to tackle Gore for losses. Alex Boone gave up a sack. The 49ers only gained 103 yards on the ground, and Arizona had been giving up more than 120 rushing yards per game.

Running backs: C+. Frank Gore had a good first quarter but the Cardinals shut him down the rest of the game, and he finished with just 55 yards on 16 carries. Kendall Hunter had a slow second half as well, and he finished with just 43 yards on 10 carries. But the 49ers remain undefeated in the Harbaugh Era when those two combine for more than 21 carries.

Wide receivers: B+. They took advantage of the Cardinals defensive backs’ poor tackling to rack up more than 100 yards of YAC. Michael Crabtree made Patrick Peterson look bad (or maybe he’s just a tremendously overrated cornerback). Crabtree made a nice jumping touchdown catch over Peterson on a fade pass. Randy Moss ran away from a couple defenders to score a touchdown. Mario Manning caught four passes for just 20 yards.

Tight ends: B. Vernon Davis was only targeted two times (that’s five times in the last three games), but he caught both passes for a total of 34 yards. Delanie Walker caught two passes as well, including one on the sideline after the ball had been batted into the air by a Cardinal cornerback.

  1. MidWestNiner says:

That catch on the batted pass should bump up the TE to a B+.

  2. Msclemons67 says:

QB should be a P for Phil Simms. Very efficient, very limited.

    • philly9er says:

What more do you think Alex should’ve done in this game?

      • Msclemons67 says:

19 pass attempts in the modern NFL = training wheels.

When the 49ers limit Alex’ exposure he can be very efficient. As we saw against the Vikings and Giants, if the 49ers ask Alex to do too much he’s a dismal failure.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Total team failure in both games Msclemon. And Smith probably would’ve have more passes and yards if Roman hadn’t throttled back in the fourth quarter. Everybody on the team did their job tonight.

      • philly9er says:

In them 2 games the whole team looked bad.
This game they were up early so 19/29 pass to run looks like niner football to me.

      • Axel Foley says:

Msclemons67 not sure why you cannot see the game for what it really was tonight. Oh well, some people love the pessimistic angle.

      • Prime Time says:

He is grumpy old drunk, that’s why!

      • LSX says:

So you’re telling me if Alex threw another 5-10 passes, we would have lost and Alex would’ve had a horrible game?

      • Adam says:

Not training wheels. When the Niners are over 20 rush attempts per, they win every time. Balance is the key. My modern football is called winning.

      • Chicago49er says:

Alex did a great job in general and helped us win the big game. What he could have done better was to get not take a few sacks or hits by throwing the ball away if no one was open. He even mentioned that on his interview. GO NINERS

      • MarkII says:

15 passes and 146 in the 1st half = training wheels? If the cardinals were in the game you do the same thing in the 2nd half and its possible you have 30 passes and 300 yards. You’re speaking out of the context of the game.

    • 49ers took my slurpy and drank it all gone!!! says:

Im sorry would you have rather had Skeltors numbers, look how many times he passed.. They obviously have the training wheels off of him huh..

    • I.P. Daily says:

What an idiotic, sniveling comment. Really pathetic…

    • Bray says:

MSC- Phil Simms won 2 Super Bowls playing that way. That’s how you play when your D is awesome.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Bray

JM had awesome defenses. Our dynasty days were based on it. The little secret of how we were so good was our defense ensuring we were always in the game by playing sound ball.

        Just as they do now.

  3. La-La Land says:

Sorry I missed this game, looks like we crushed them in the desert. Had to spend the week in London for the James Bond premiere (BTW, Best.Bond.Ever.) and the Patriots game. Judging by the fans there, the NFL should just have the Niners and New England play every year, because those are the two teams with Blighty loyalty. Hope some of you will be there next year for our game.

  4. DS94everXev says:

    C for the OL?
The OL didn’t give up sacks immediately. AS never got rushed. Young said his feet were near perfect. That isn’t possible if the OL isn’t doing an A job.

Need to change your grade there.

    • MidWestNiner says:

Two sacks were on the OL and they couldn’t open up holes for Gore and Hunter in the second half. Maybe at worse a C+ grade for them.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Mid-west

AZ is a very good D. I’ll have to look again, but there were no sacks where the DL gets to AS spot the same time AS does, as has often been the case his whole career.

To me, those are the sacks that AS has no chance. I’m not mad about the sacks. Our WR’s were getting open. AS was trying to give them more time. And most importantly, AS had no TO’s.

AZ had1. If we win or are even with TO’s, we’ll beat every team.
        Anybody. Anywhere. Anytime.

      • MidWestNiner says:

The last two sacks came fairly quickly after the snap. Smith had no time to throw it away or anything else but take the sacks. The first two however were on Smith.

    • Chicago49er says:

DS, I completely agree with you! OL played a pretty good game and a few of the sacks was just due to good coverage by the defense.

  5. andy grundrisse says:

Did Alex Smith throw a single pass more than 15 yards downfield. And each of the sacks he took was because he held on to the ball far too long. Can’t he just throw the ball away. Even intentional grounding is no worse than a sack. what are we going to do against a real defense ( I guess we know…get creamed).
3 touchdown passes (1) mediocre short pass to Crabtree who wrestled the ball away from Peterson, (2) short pass to crabtree, Peteson fell down and Crabtree ran it in, (3) short pass to moss who made a great move and raced to the end zone.
Conclusion : With Smith we can beat all the terrible teams, but will get beat by the better ones.

    • MidWestNiner says:

Way to cut down a good performance against a strong defense. Haters gonna hate no matter what.

    • Axel Foley says:

That is such a lie. Have you seen Alex’s record over the past two seasons? Bad teams or not, those are still wins. What else do you want from the guy.

      • DS94everXev says:

Every team plays bad teams. Not every team is
        19-5

      • andy grundrisse says:

I want him to be able to throw the ball at least 15 yards down the field. He completed passes for a total of less than 50 yards before the runs after the catch. This is not hating, this is just realistic. The better coached teams will pack their defense near the line of scrimmage and shut us down. This is what happened against Minnesota. This is what happened against NY ( last two times).
and by the way I was a 49er fan before you were born, and have the ticket stubs from Kezar to prove it.

      • DS94everXev says:

Have you ever seen JM being interviewed? He talks all the time about how he threw 5 yard passes, and he gets credit for all 20 yards gained due to YAC.

What you saw last night was the WCO in its purest form. Short high % throws on well designed plays to get easy YAC, as well as nice individual effort by the WR’s to maximize the pass play.

And if you want evidence of AS throwing over 15 yards well, he did against Buffalo. But throws over 15 isn’t what the WCO, JH, this team are about. If you want to see that every week, best find a new team. That isn’t hating on you. That is just the facts of the Niner team. You want what they aren’t.

      • FDM says:

I still do not understand that fans dont understand that this 49ers team under Harbaugh is not and will never be a down field, vertical passing team.
Stop looking for the run and shoot offense, this is not how this team has drafted and built, nor does this coaching staff employ this philosophy.

      • Jack Hammer says:

“this 49ers team under Harbaugh is not and will never be a down field, vertical passing team.”

They call their shots down field mostly using play action shots, and even did a couple of times last night. The defense did a good job of covering those routes so Smith did the right thing and checked down for good gains.

What this team is not, is a team that functions it’s best when trying to throw the ball 30+ times. Last night was a great example. Run the ball early, and when they come to stop the run you throw it over them. Loved the balance last night.

      • DS94everXev says:

        FDM

Very true. MC had his best game, and he didn’t get any yards going deep. He got open for short high % passes, didn’t drop any, and embarrassed Peterson.

All of this happens because they use MC in the role he is best in. If they send him deep 80% of the time, he doesn’t have even an average game.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Sad AZ fan

18/19, 3 TD’s, and AS has completed plenty of 15+ yard passes.

You suck. Go Trick o’ Treat and hope for a lolipop.

      • andy grundrisse says:

I didn’t see a single one last night ( not counting yards after the catch).
Your insults reveal nothing about my comments, they however reveal everything about you.

      • DS94everXev says:

My comments stand as fact. 18/19. Now 6-2. Your comments say a lot about how you want to be right when you have been wrong for going on 2 seasons now.

And I beleive AS did throw a pass over 15 yards. The one to VD. So, you complain about something that means nothing, and you’re wrong. A marriage made in heaven on this blog.

    • Fansince77 says:

AZ has a real D. This was the first game that gave up more then 21 pts. Niners were in total control. AZ had no offense. The WRs play well, but Alex made some poor decisions. The 2nd TD was luck. It was a horrible checkdown.
But hey I’ll take it. If he plays up to his ability, and the team does as well, we’ll win 90% of the games we play.
I do love the Moss sighting. They can only build on that. Moss made it look easy. Note to Alex — pass to that guy more often. Moss and VD are big threats like Oregon team, they can take it to the house at any given time.

      • Adam says:

If you’re a fan since 1977, you know better. Not a bad decision to go to Crabs. He was the only guy open. Smith pumped and froze Peterson, Crabs went inside went inside when Peterson thought he was goimg to the corner. Excellent execution by both.

Hitting Moss once in awhile will keep defenses guessing for the rest of the year. Not just a decoy.

    • Chicago49er says:

The pass to Crabtree was an amazing pass and catch! It was a perfect throw with great touch! We have been lacking this type of play from Alex and Crabtree so it was very nice to see Alex having confidence in his WR and throw it up so he can make a play!

    • 55Niner says:

You obviously have no recollection of 49er history..specifically the 80′s when 49er receivers made big plays out of short passes……Dwight Clark, Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Mike Wilson all made short passes long gainers with big RAC stats….RAC stands for Run After the Catch…very important stat in pro football…….

  6. MidWestNiner says:

Gah! Those 80′s sunglasses on Crabtree again.

  7. An outstanding game by Smith tonight. Smith becoming a very good QB!!! If you doubt that assessment then you should of heard the compliments Mr Gruden was preaching tonight. A very good QB evaluator just like our own Head Coach. 1 dropped pass from a 19-19 game………

    • Maven says:

Once again a lot a bad mouthing Smith. He won. If he takes a sack because of coverage it is not his fault. Hold on to the ball and there are no bad things that can happen. Throw the ball away and there are bad things that can happen. Smith played JH’s game and did it almost perfectly. No interceptions, 3 touhdowns, 18 of 19 and over 200 yard passing. How many teams in this league would kill for a quarterback with that record and a 6 and 2 record. Now comes the big question. Do they give him the roster bonus or does Kap become the QB? I think the roster bonus gets paid.

    • Sean in Canada says:

      Good stuff again, Jack.

    • MidWestNiner says:

Great job Jack. Can’t wait for your next piece.

    • cantbreakpar says:

Good read Jack. And how dare you bring dishonor to the #16 by mentioning it on the same page as AS? haha.

    • AES says:

      Good points Hammer.
But I must be honest in saying that at no time during the game did AS remind me of #16.

This is not a slight against AS’ great performance. It was a great performance but it does not (IMO) put him in elite status like the legendary J.Montana.

When Matt Flynn threw for 6 TD’ in A.Rodger’ stead last season it was a great performance but it did not put him in A.Rodgers, B.Farve, or any of the elite QB’ category.

Alex is on the rise, but it will take more playoff wins and a SB win which of course spells consistency before he is mentioned in the same breath as #16.

Aside from that, all good Hammer.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Thank you for the feedback AES. I don’t take that comparison lightly and that is the first time I have ever done so.

That was a great performance, and was perfect coming on the heels of the Top 10 Montana Games and Eddie D Football Life shows that were on NFL Network last week.

      • neal says:

        Good point Jack,

Although Walker drop a easy one, he also caught a very hard one, too, which the Cards corner or safety could of made a interception. Good insightful blog.

  8. Adam says:

Nice 12+ yards per attempt by Smith. Nice college YAC for Crabs. Dilfer’s right, Niners are finally starting to use him correctly.

A-gap blitz protection needs a little work. Couple of those sacks were protection failures. The others Smith could have avoided.

    Defense was Perry solid

    • Adam says:

Damned phone and small windows! “pretty solid.” They looked a little winded defending the “hurry-up” offense. Goldson’s hit on Doucett is a cautionary tale for other receivers around the league.

  9. Johnny Christo says:

Alex shut my mofo mouth tonight. Keep it coming, Kid.

  10. MidWestNiner says:

Jack, can you do an article on what you want to see the Niners improve on after the bye week?

    • BigP says:

Consistency. This team should be able to procure home field advantage throughout the playoffs with their remaining schedule. They need to keep grinding and not let up mentally. When this team is on, I don’t think they can be beat. The defense is ridiculous. If the passing game can compliment the running game like it did tonight, San Francisco may have a World Series and Super Bowl Champion in 2012.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Big P,

Who do you see Atlanta losing 2 games too?

      • DS94everXev says:

        Jack

Does it matter? Who will Atlanta beat in the playoffs?

      • MidWestNiner says:

Dallas could be a challenge for them. If the Arizona offense shows up, that could be a real dogfight. They also still have to play a solid Giants team. And depending on which Detroit Lions show up will affect that game as well.

      • BigP says:

        Jack,
The NFC South is very competetive and they have to play the Giants and Cowboys. They may very well get home field, but they don’t worry me as much as the Packers or Giants do. They also aren’t the typical fast break dome team like the Saints have been. Out of the upper echelon teams, I fear the Falcons the least, but I agree that they have a great shot at home field advantage.

      • Crab15 says:

BigP – The Falcons peaked too early, they will still lose 3 or 4 games.

        ATL remainig schedule:

        Week/OPPONENT
        9 vs Dallas
        10 @ New Orleans
        11 vs Arizona
        12 @ Tampa Bay
        13 vs New Orleans
        14 @ Carolina
        15 vs NY Giants
        16 @ Detroit
        17 vs Tampa Bay

      • Jack Hammer says:

        BigP,

The NFC South is one of the weakest in the league this year. The other teams are a combined 6-15. They also get both NY and Dallas at home.

As it stands right now the 49ers would be the #4 seed. fortunately there is a lot of ball to be played. My guess is they will go in as the #2 or #3 seed.

    • Jack Hammer says:

      MidWest,

I will work on it. Give me a few days to go over the games from the first half.

  11. cantbreakpar says:

Well earned grade of A for AS.

I’d like to know what the receiving group needed to do to earn an A??? Caught everything thrown their way and scored all the TD’s. In my opinion, an A performance from that group.

    • MidWestNiner says:

I agree. This was a great game by them. Moss showed that he’s still got it and Crabtree looked every bit of a #1 WR tonight.

  12. Hov says:

Nice 49er win Alex you was ok/efficient moss and crab balled out 9ers baby all day every day

  13. MidWestNiner says:

And we need to go after Dwayne Bowe because…..

    • DS94everXev says:

What about the Rams RB? Supposedly he’s available. Imagine FG being rested only to have Jackson come in. After that pounding, here comes KH. For a run dominant team, it would be like JR and LF together.

      WOW!

      • Ed from AZ says:

I would take SJ over Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs is not a bad RB, but he’s just having a difficult time finding his way onto the field, even in a blowout. But it’s not his fault his knee was almost shattered.

  14. elGuapo says:

Great game Alex! Show me MORE!!! If you could just play consistantly good, like tonight?!?! I’ll throw you a parade!!!

  15. Big Suede says:

I feel like I saw a game that was totally opposite of what everyone else saw.

The cardinals failed to wrap Crabs up twice and Moss once. Two of those three should have been play killing because Smith decided to throw to them 3-5 yards short of the first down. And then the Cardinals also should have intercepted that pass to delanie walker.

Without those fluke plays- Alex Smith has 1 td/ 1 int for the game for around 180 yards. Niners win 13-3. Would you guys all be cheering Alex Smith over that?

Is that a good game? Did Smith make any exceptional throws tonight? I don’t see it.

Other than the game against the Bills- Alex Smith has been mediocre- and worse than that- boring.

    • MidWestNiner says:

Every game has fluke plays. And a team can win by making less mistakes than the other team. Flash doesn’t win games. See Cam Newton and Michael Vick. You’re just nitpicking because you don’t like the QB and nothing more. Get over it and move on.

      • Big Suede says:

I honestly think that the first time Alex Smith misses a game with harbaugh due to injury will be his last as a starter. If CK gets a full game with the starters on this team- there will be no debate.

And if you listen to the receivers- it is apparent they want to move on- it is pretty awkward listening to moss and crabs step around the elephant in the room.

      • MidWestNiner says:

No proof in anything you’ve posted here. Focus on the team, not just one player.

    • Dystope_ says:

“And then the Cardinals also should have intercepted that pass to delanie walker.”

You clearly didn’t watch the play or the replay. Even with serious hops, he barely got a finger on it. Which is why it was able to continue its trajectory to Walker. There is no possible way that was going to be an interception. At worst, if he had gotten a tiny bit more finger, he might have been able to deflect it far enough to break up the pass.

See, the problem with your style of criticism is that you make such preposterous statements as to then invalidate your entire argument. I actually don’t even know what else you typed. I just figure anyone that typed something that idiotic clearly has no clue, doesn’t understand the basic physics of a passed football, and relies on hyperbole over actual discourse. One completely idiotic statement makes the entire commentary, by association, idiotic.

      • Big Suede says:

Steve young said that pass probably should have been intercepted- it was an objectively bad pass

      • MidWestNiner says:

It was a tipped pass. It happens even to Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. And it doesn’t matter if it should have been intercepted. It wasn’t and we won the the game. It’s as simple as that.

      • Big Suede says:

LOL- and actually- Smith said on espn that that was a pass he would have liked back because he shouldnt have thrown it.

And that is where my logic escapes you- ok. You are a non-thinking homer- that’s fine.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

SYoung also said you could watch AS from the waist down looking at his footwork knowing that he played very wall.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        *well*

      • MidWestNiner says:

Hot air escapes anybody Suede when they use it as logic Suede. I agree the pass could’ve been intercepted, but it wasn’t. There will always be a pass that a QB wants to have back, even when it turns in the QB’s favor. It’s not a new concept. Who is it that isn’t thinking here, the one focused on the team overall or the one with a fixation on one player?

    • JDilla says:

Fluke plays lol I’ve heard it all now. You are making excuses for Alex playing bad using the argument a receiver gaining YAC and juking a defender is a fluke? You can’t be serious man. Your entitled to your personal opinion on how you feel about Smith, but your argument is just ignorant and ridiculous. I guess when Marshawn Lynch breaks tackles for more yards that is also a fluke. Just hilarious.

  16. Coffee's for closers says:

I’m going to keep saying it until you believe it, Vernon Davis doesn’t have to catch 50+ yards a game for this team to win.

  17. Adam707 says:

Nothing to knock Alex for this game. Played great. This is a game where passing yards doesnt matter. He only had 19 attempts (4 or 5 in 2nd half) thats only because the defense was so dominant and the Niners wanted to run it to keep the clock moving.

  18. ninermd says:

Grade C for the O-line??? Grant that makes no sense. You say they gave up 4 sacks, but then you say most were Smiths fault. I think you should change it to a B and give Smith an A-. 3 of those sacks were on Smith. And the predictable running plays in the second half shouldn’t go against the O-line that much. B for the -line. A- for Smith who played well but not perfect. Taking those sacks knocks down a perfect performance.

  19. ninermd says:

They went back to the bread and butter that makes them effective. As I said they would. Smith with the quick passes, running the ball more, some play action passes. And a huge night for YAC.

4 things that still concern me a bit

1 smith taking sacks that could have been throw aways. The good in that is that he seems to be wanting to stand in the pocket more. But he takes his eyes off of the receivers down field. A little work on that and it could be a very good thing.

2 the short throws on long 3rd downs. Receivers aren’t going to slip all the time and the receivers aren’t going to get those YAC all the time. I’d still like to see Smith throw AT or past the first down marker.

3 the screen pass. GR must dial those up more often.

4 the penalties. Those are drive killers against the good teams. Harbaugh has to get this team back to last years form with these. Just like staying away from 10-17 point deficits, they must stay away from 1st or 2nd and 20′s and 3rd and longs. It’s not a place that this offense can usually get out of.

  20. AES* says:

I agree with your grades Grant.

Alex had a great game and earned the A. I would have given him an A+ except for a couple of times where he could have thrown the ball away rather then take a sack. All and all, great effort from AS.

O-line did get beat a few times on pass blocking and did not do a sufficient job in opening holes for the RB’. Your grade here was good.

WR’ shined tonight, especially MC. RM had a ‘throw-back’ reception where he catches a pass and ran for a TD.
Simple truth: If AS is on his passing game, so are our WR’s. This game was a prime example of that.
I would have given our WR corps an A because only one pass was dropped.
But nothing to quibble about here.

Nice to see our TE’ (especially VD) get some significant work.
    Good grade.

  21. FDM says:

Overall a very good game and more importantly, a statement game against a division rival. One thing thta stood out to me was the drive killing penalties. We were able to overcome some of them, but some of those penalties cannot happen.
I thought it was going to be a big day for the running game but what I appreciate most about this team is that they are always well prepared and we always find different ways to win. We really do have the best coaching staff in the league.

    • Quest to Protest Prime Time says:

FDM, a statement game for #11 and a big shout out to all the “real fans” who trashed for the last 10 days. Said he would not show up under the lights on Monday night but insted showed he is the little general leadin this offense.
Nothing better than waking up with win and Alex
proves once again that on the big stage all he does is win.
Crabtree, my apologies, you stepped up and out played PP big time.
Bay, 23, Neal, Nick, crow is now served!

  22. Jack Hammer says:

    Grant,

I think you should reevaluate your grade for the o line. They dominated in the first half when the game was put away.

    From Sando’s blog at halftime,

“Life for Peterson and the Cardinals’ secondary would be easier if the 49ers weren’t dominating up front. San Francisco has run the ball almost at will. The pass protection has been good as well. Alex Smith held the ball too long when he took sacks.”

    • Grant Cohn says:

Boone gave up a sack, and the run blocking was was poor after the first quarter. There were penalties, too.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Yeah. Boone’s block in the back on the screen killed that first drive, but they were very good in that first half. They didn’t run very many plays in the 2nd half.

What do you say a B-? LoL!

      @ Jack:

I had the sense that once Harbaugh was convinced the game was won, he shut down all creativity on offense and was content to eat up the clock by running simple, vanilla plays. Did the 49ers bring out any new formations or show anything in the second half they hadn’t already shown? After Arizona made adjustments to counter what I thought was a creative first half running game plan, I didn’t see any attempt by the 49ers to make counter-adjustments. They ran at will in the first half, but once the game was in hand, the 49ers seemed content merely to eat up the clock and shorten the game. They also stopped passing – only four attempts in the second half.

It felt like Harbaugh said to himself, “This game is in the bag; let’s not reveal any more of the offense to future opponents.” He is after all a maniac about not revealing scheme.

Anyway, in my opinion, that would explain why the line/run game was less effective in the second half.

When you are reviewing the All 22 film, can you keep an eye on whether the 49ers did anything particularly creative offensively after they went up 24-0?

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Claude,

The 49ers only ran 20 offensive plays in the 2nd half. The scoring drive was 6 of those plays, and the last 2 were Smith kneeling, so after the TD they ran only 12 plays total.

This game was over at halftime, and done after the Moss TD.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Jack:

I am aware of those facts and believe they are consistent with my observation. They seemed content with the 3 and outs, or at least not so discontent that they were willing to try anything creative.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Claude,

You are right, I was agreeing with you. The all 22 isn’t usually available for about 48 hours after the game, but I will definitely be checking it out.

Alex: A+. When you’re 18/19 and you break a record, you gotta reward that with the highest grade. No, he didn’t stop a locomotive or save a woman from a burning house, but that was a great performance. I’m the first to point out Alex’s flaws (altho many posters here seem to think he is Superman, or Superman’s little brother), but when he performs at the top end, it has to be acknowledged and you have to stand up and applaud.

Gore: A. I didnt watch quite as closely because of the 40-75 mph winds rattling my windows, but Gore gets the big yards when they count – when the team is trying to get its offense going, and when they need to control the ball.

Crabs: A. first time he’s made a DB look bad. This is what i thought we had when we drafted him, but apparently its not the case on a consistent basis. hope he proves me wrong.

the key: doing this against the top teams, when it matters.

  24. Mike says:

Smith had a good game but let’s be honest, the Cardinals had a very bad game. His first TD pass was excellent, the 2nd and 3rd were due to missed tackles. Nearly all of Smith’s passes were thrown under 7 yards and sometimes receivers then broke them for big gains. Awful tackling by Phoenix. Smith still took too many sacks. The running game allowed the passing attack to be effective. Until I see him perform consistently I’m not going to get my hopes up. Until the league respects him I don’t think his fans should get too excited.

    • bayareafanatic says:

Wrong. You have to give him his due after a game like this. Granted AZ had a game plan epic failure. They went in 100% to stop the run and never altered their plan.
The blue print to stop the Niners is to crowd the line and mix up dropping linebackers and D lineman into coverage. A defense has to have the ability to stop the run executing this type of defensive gameplan.
AZ sold out to stop the run and left itself vulnerable. And to add insult to it, didn’t stop the run either.
This game plan was similar to the first two games of the season and the outcome was similar as well.
Where Smith struggles mightily is when a defense such as the Vikings and the Giants can create pressure with three and four lineman. This is where Smith has yet to show he can make the adjustment. He goes from looking like a genius like he was last night to looking like Skelton.

    • DS94everXev says:

That D was the same on that beat the tar out of Brady in NE and AR. If you want to call it straight, then please do so correctly. AS was much smarter than they were. Didn’t you listen to the announcers in the game? AS audibled out of plays and changed it to the right one time and time again.

There is a lot more to being a QB than stats. And audibling into the right play is a big part of winning.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Go away little fella. The boys are talking football. Not sci-fi intergalactic pole dancing X-ilicious.

      • DS94everXev says:

        bay

Bay bay go away. Please come back no other day.

I bet you’re happy you are a wuss. Because if you weren’t, you’d be long gone now! But, of course, you will be anyway. Because you promised.

And stop trying to talk about things you don’t understand. Like decency, football, and….wussing out. But of course you are an expert in that. So 1/3 isn’t as bad as 0/3.

Bay bay go away. Come back no other Day!
        :- )

      • DS94everXev says:

        Bay

How was that average QB play last night from an average QB?

Tick-tock, tickk-tock. Feeling the life being drained from you on the blog as the Niners continue to gather wins and momentum behind their CAPTAIN AS?

I do. And it’s fun. It is ohhh so fun.

      • ninermd says:

Hey bs…. How did MC look? You hater. Weren’t you the one who said he can’t get any YAC? He goes down to easy? Was it killing you that he led the team to victory? that makes MC 6-2 now. Must suck for you. But haters gonna hate.

      • DS94everXev says:

I love this BS fellow. He never posts, but you’re so impacted by him. Just like oneniner.

md, you are a racist. You hate for the reason to hate. You call people names, and then freak out when somebody calls you names. You are swine. Live in your muck.

I meanwhile will live being a happy fan. You are just a very disturbed individual.

      • ninermd says:

Great answer bs. Way to avoid the subject, then call names and say that I do. Ha ha haaaa. Thank God for MC. He’s was an under used receiver and the “pre Madonna” tag you put on him smack you in the face. Ha ha haaaa. Racist haters are gonna hate. What can you do. Wheeeew!

      • DS94everXev says:

        BS?

Well, that name does suit your buddy wuss boy bay. Because he talks tough, then when challenged to show his machismo, he wussed out.

So, that macho talk, is factually BS.

Good job md! First time I’ve ever agreed with you!

      • bayareafanatic says:

        MD,
if you put this little sci fi lunatic in a padded room, how many conversations do you think it would have with itself?

      • DS94everXev says:

@Bay wussing thru his last breath on the blog

How does it feel knowing you’ve spent all these years being a jerk, then making some stupid promise, only to find out all your time hating the guy, you were wrong

Bay bay go away. And stay gone.
        :- )

      • ninermd says:

Lol bay. Answer would be 1. And take a wild guess on what the convo would be about. Lmao.
Here goes bs again let the JM and SY comparisons begin. Ha ha haaaaa. Wheeeew!

    • ninermd says:

Good good by smith. The key word in your post was “Consistency” who knows we could see the bad Alex next game. I just want the guy to be consistent.

  25. ...scotch says:

    re fluke plays

I always enjoyed the many “fluke plays” with Montan throwing short passes to John Tyalor & him taking off for major YAC.

18 0f 19 is great playing catch in your backyard let alone against a formidable NFL D…

  26. Mr. Automatic says:

“probably should have” been intercepted, “fluke plays” to score touchdowns, 18 of 19 passing apparently = “mediocre” and “boring”

Sometimes this blog is really hard to read. Please gang, don’t feed the trolls.

    Good win, team! Go Niners!

    • DS94everXev says:

Steve Young had a couple of similar type games. I wonder if these same people complained then?

We all know they didn’t, but it was a rhetorical question.

  27. ninermd says:

Reading the comments box that say no name on it.
You can tell who the idiot is that continues to bring up JM and SY in comparison. I really Didnt think anybody could be this stupid. Wow!
