A few of you have suggested recently that Greg Roman might get a head coaching job this offseason, either at a University or an NFL team.
For the sake of discussion, let’s say he does leave the 49ers in a few months and becomes a head coach somewhere else.
Where would he go? Would he go to the San Diego Chargers? Or a Pac 12 team? Or a Big 10 team? Tell me exactly where he would go, and why.
One more thing – tell me who would take Roman’s place as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator. Would it be quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst? Or offensive assistant Paul Wulff? Or somebody in another organization, like Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg? Or somebody from college, like Oregon head coach Chip Kelly?
Eager to read your thoughts.

Chargers or Lions most likely.
I think it would be quarterbacks coach Chryst or a college offensive coordinator making the jump.
I think his next move is as a HC at college. If I paid more attention to college I could give possibly give a better answer on where. As far as his replacement one thing I feel pretty sure of is that it wouldn’t be a current college head coach.
Possibly Brad Seely; it would certainly help round out his resume something he might feel is holding him back from being a HC. Seely is also highly respected within and outside of the organization. His name has already come up as a possible head coach candidate for 2013 so it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities that he take an coordinator position first.
One thing I feel sure of is that it’ll be someone that Harbaugh has already worked with before.
I double checked his resume and he’s been a TE coach before switching to ST’s and he’s currently listed as the ST/Assistant Head Coach for us.
I think the Chargers make a serious run at him
I think Greg Roman is popular in SF, but not popular outside of SF circles. His Offense isn’t spetacular. You can blame any number of players for that lack of production.
Greg Roman won’t be an NFL Head Coach next season. SD is going to go after a big name. I believe Nick Saban is on the short list.
Greg Roman will have to start his head coaching career in the college ranks. Cal, Oregan, maybe even Alabama if Saban goes to an NFL team.
Roman’s offense is perfect for the college game but doesn’t really fit in the modern NFL. I agree that he’ll get an offer to HC a college team before an NFL team calls.
I don’t think Saban will leave Alabama for the NFL. He’s done that before with the Dolphins, and it didn’t turn out well.
Roman is going to stay in SF, and his sole purpose will be to torment you with how he uses Davis.
Jack, what do you think of hypothetical articles such as this?
maybe your mistake is to assume this is an article, hof. There’s nothing wrong with talking points on a blog.
I think they are great fun Hofer. Why do you ask?
Jack, I agree with you. GR isn’t ready for a HC position. He needs to first get his pass offense to at least a middle of the pack team ranking.
Yes, I enjoy these hypothetical reads. I enjoy the different take everyone has agree or not.
Did you think Mike McCarthy was ready?
Expect Davis to be in only on first and second downs and only on run plays.
Grant, read this quote from Bruce Arians about the Colts offense and tell me what you think it means and possibly says about Fleener and their motivation on selecting him?
“We do spread people out and throw it quickly; we think we have everything, but we also use our tight ends and backs to help the offensive line. We want to throw it to the guys who are paid to catch it, and hand it off to the guys who are paid to run it. We’re not a West Coast offense by any means.”
I take this to say that the TE is going to be used as a blocker much more often then as a receiver. To say the people who are paid to catch it and that they aren’t a WC offense says that the passes are going to Wide Receivers and that the backs and tight ends will be kept home to block. If that is the case then did they really select Fleener because they saw him as an outstanding threat in the passing game?
i take it to mean that they don’t throw to their running backs. Remember Craig and Rathman caught as many or more balls than the wideouts in Walsh’s WCO.
I’m assuming they throw to the Tight Ends. The Colts drafted TWO Tight Ends in the draft, including Fleener who was a receiving specialist (not considered much of a blocker). Air Coryell Offenses and it’s decedents throw to the Tight Ends (except Mike Martz). Think Kellen Winslow (Sr.), Jay Novaceck, Antonio Gates.
For those who are tired of the endless Alex Smith debate:

It is my sincerest wish that Iupati dominate Calais Campbell to such an extent that Campbell loses control of his bowels and the entire nation is embarrassed for him.
1) great article
2) what other position on the team is really debatable? If I say Justin Smith is great everyone nods. Same for Gore, Willis, Davis and the other core players. Most of them have been here for the bad times and performed well despite having different systems, bad coaches, excuse, excuse, excuse.
Only the Precious is truly a subject for debate – a #1 overall pick who has been consistently outperformed by a 3rd round pick for his entire career.
I don’t see anyone on the immediate staff leaving until a world championship is realized, however if Roman were to leave I would be surprised if Mr. Chryst.
*were not the choice.*
Roman value is not high for a head coach in the NFL. The offense still sucks on third down and red zone play and 29th in the league last year, same crap this year. If he had a real QB, his stock would be way up. AS is a career killer.
Whose career did he kill neal?
If he happened to kill Nolans and Sings careers, Neal and everybody else on this board should get down and kiss his feet for that.
The Rev is a horrible coach in every facet, Nolan is still a good defensive coordinator. Roman not going anywhere with AS at the helm, and Harbaugh will not win any Super Bowls with a limited QB.
So whose career did he kill Neal?
Greg Roman’s press conference puts to bed this notion of lack of trust in Alex, why the strength of their personel dictates their system, and essentially why certain guys get more touches than others.
They know their offensive line and running backs are the strength of their offense, this is why the put the game plan on those guys.
They also know Alex is going to point guard his way to running this offense. Now he can throw it around but with the talent heavy on the oline and RB’s, the onus is on them. They also rely on their all world defense by giving them long fields to defend by minizing risk through the deep passing game.
The funny question in all this was do we stubbornly force the ball to Vernon Davis? Roman should have said, yeah lets throw it into triple coverage and see what happens, dumb question, next question.
Vernon will get his touches, better to take what the defense gives you. Its worked pretty well over 7 games so far. People did not like the dink and dunk against SEA, but that drive consummed clock and they scored a beautiful touchdown. Whatever it takes to win the game boys.
A lot of people forget the the West Coast offense is a “dink and dunk” offense. It’s basically a checkdown offense, where short to intermediate routes are designed to get YAC. Everyone keeps complaining about the lack of a downfield threat. Walsh would be so mad right now. John Taylor got a lot of his big plays on slants, drags, and crossing routes.
Some people prefer the downfield aerial assault passing game. This is not how the 49ers are built. You dont spend 3 1st round draft picks on your offensive line, add a shifty back and speedy back in Hunter and LaMichael James, complimented by the all world Frank Gore to be a passing team.
Axel
Haven’t you heard? The QB makes the OL block and the WR’s be open.
And anybody old enough knows that the WCO at its core is dink-dunk. It just so happens for most of the dynasty years we had WR’s who commonly turned 5 yard passes into 17 yard gains. For a few years there, JR had an average of 17 or more per catch. And JM didn’t heave it 20 yards downfield everytime. Having the best NFL player of all time helps a QB out.
I believe it would be Jeep. he comes up with plays at times but lately, Harbaugh has kept this under wraps. He seems intelligent and has a good relationship with CK.
I don’t see Roman getting a head coaching job in the NFL until he proves himself at the college level. His problem is that no one can no for certain how much of this offense is Harbaugh and how much of it is Roman. SO that makes him to risky at the pro level.
If he goes it won’t matter who takes over the OC, as nothing will change. The team will look and play exactly the same.
As for the Chargers, Norv Turner is let go of when his contract is over and his replacement will be the cheapest guy available.
