49ers-Rams live blog: First quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers Week 10 home game against the St. Louis Rams. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis.

1:23 The Rams win the toss and defer. The 49ers will receive.

1:26 Ted Ginn Jr. returns the opening kickoff from the back of the end zone to the SF 20 yard line.

1:28 The 49ers go three-and-out on their opening drive. Frank Gore lost a yard on first down, Alex Smith held on to the ball too long and ran into a sack on second down, and on third and 13, Smith completed a screen to Gore, who gained a couple of yards. Andy Lee punts. The Rams will start their first drive at their 34 yard line.

1:33 The Rams drive down the field in six plays for a touchdown. Brian Quick knocked Culliver to the ground at the line of scrimmage and Goldson was late rotating to help on the 36-yard TD pass from Bradford. Steven Jackson set up that pass by running four times in a row for 23 yards and two first downs. 7-0 Rams with 9:38 in the first quarter.

1:45 Alex Smith converts a third-and-six throwing to a wide open Michael Crabtree. A few plays later on third and two, Greg Roman calls a Gore run up the middle on third and two, and he loses two yards. Terrible third down call by Roman. Rams ball at their 7 yard line. I’m betting they hand the ball off to Steven Jackson on first down.

1:47 Isaac Sopoaga is out and Ricky Jean Francois is in.

1:48 Steven Jackson just ran through a huge hole for a 7-yard touchdown run. 14-0 Rams. The 49ers look horrendous so far. The defense can’t stop the run or pressure Sam Bradford, and the offense has converted just one third down. Vic Fangio has Tarell Brown covering Amendola in the slot, perhaps because Rogers can’t cover him. But it doesn’t seem like Brown can cover Amendola, either. Brown gave up a 13-yard catch to Amendola one play before the touchdown. 1:47 left in the first quarter.

1:57 Ginn fumbles on the return by the 49ers recover at their 22 yard line. A lot of pressure on Greg Roman and the 49ers offense right now.

2:01 Vernon Davis catches a six-yard pass on third and six, and Gore follows that with a 11-yard run around the left end. He bounced off James Laurinaitis in the hole.

    Sup

  2. Houston 9er says:

Really don’t like Tim Ryan as an analyst. If the timing wasn’t screwed up I’d turn this off and listen on the radio.

  3. msclemons67 says:

I guess teams have noticed Harbaugh prefers to start on D. Every time the opponent has won the toss this year they’ve deferred.

  4. Houston 9er says:

One read and panic. Not exactly a great strategy.

  5. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

    Still taking sacks!

  6. Hoferfan67 says:

I like the screen, but FG is not the RB he use to be for that play. Not elusive enough.

    • Houston 9er says:

I tend to agree. Would like to see Kendall Hunter on that play call. Even so, the 9ers had 4 blockers and completely missed the only Ram in the area.

  7. Johnny Christo says:

Pressure on Smith early. Watch and learn. Happy feet. Nervous Nelly. Feed the rock to the backs if you don’t want an ugly surprise, Harbaugh!

  8. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

    Lets go D!!

  9. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

Rams are fired up. Dee has to step up!

  10. dangle says:

Grant did you end up starting Jackson… good start for him so far

  11. Johnny Christo says:

    Freddie P! IN DA HOUSE!!!

  12. Hoferfan67 says:

Damn, I wanted the 9ers do draft BQuick!!

  13. msclemons67 says:

Wow – defense is asleep. Ugh.

    • Randy says:

defense had better wake up…this is not the same old Rams..new coach..good quarterback…all-pro running back…good pass rush…and Amendola is back.

  14. Johnny Christo says:

    Can Alex lead a comeback?

  15. Nick says:

Damn. Terrible start including that sack created by AS

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Poor run on 1st down, held the ball too long on 2nd down, wrong RB for a screen on 3rd down. Does GR script his plays!!

  16. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

Well, this is the formula for defeat. Lets see what Smith can do now.

  17. dangle says:

Ouch! First drives for both sides of the ball are a really bad indicators. They stuffed our Offense and made swiss cheese out of our Defense. Time to regroup and in a hurry.

  18. Hov says:

Grant is cully still the best cb in te NFL ? Lmao nice call

  19. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

Dang! Alex needs to play better defense. This sucks!

  20. 49er42 says:

    Ok bad start
need to step it up now no relaxing out on the field.the Rams can play.

  21. Houston 9er says:

We can’t afford to get down too much in this game. We have the 28th ranked pass offense in the league. We are not built to try to come from too far behind.

  22. Nick says:

    Lets go Niners

  23. ribico says:

Defense must have been tired from that offensive 3 and out.

  24. domingo says:

    Flat after bye week.

  25. undercenter says:

    Its way early to worry!!

  26. Johnny Christo says:

Love how Ginn always ends up back-pedaling on his returns. What a winner!!!

  27. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

Defense is still on a bye.

  28. Neal says:

Defense is slow and rusty, can’t rely on our offense to win this game

  29. msclemons67 says:

Wilson just did a great job of taking a sack, heh.

  30. angusinCanada says:

    Kaeperkeeper!

  31. Johnny Christo says:

    Nice throw, Bum!

  32. Hoferfan67 says:

    I hate bye weeks

  33. msclemons67 says:

C’mon Roman – the run is working. Stick with it.

  34. Johnny Christo says:

    Off dem shoetops!

  35. Johnny Christo says:

    Gore gots nada today!

  36. Houston 9er says:

Smith is way off today. 5 feet over the WR head on 2nd down and then a poor pass to Crabs. At least he caught it.

Rams are stacking the box on 1st down and leaving the WR with single coverage. If an NFL team can’t expose that defense with the pass game then something is very very wrong.

    • angusinCanada says:

The pass to crabs was in the face of heavy pressure, to the right read. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a good play. Perspective, man….

      • Houston 9er says:

Angus, are you watching the same game I’m watching? Smith had no one at all in his face. The rush was behind him and to the left. Smith had a clear shot to Crabs but his footwork was horrendous. He hopped and didn’t align his feet to his target. There wasn’t a Ram within 3 yards of Smith. It was a horrible throw caused by terrible footwork not by pressure in his face. Record the game and go back and look at it.

      • Houston 9er says:

Strike that. It wasn’t a horrible throw. It was a poor throw caused by terrible footwork.

      • angusinCanada says:

That may have been my bad. I’m watching a choppy feed on a small computer….
I’m more concerned about the d right now…good grief!

    • domingo says:

Watched Cal try the same strategy last night vs Oregon. As a result Cal slow down the Ducks run game but Marcus Mariota threw 6 touchdowns. Alex needs to step up.

  37. DS94everXev says:

Culliver finally paid for his inability to play it tough on the line. That didn’t happen the last dew weeks.

  38. Hoferfan67 says:

This line is built to run

  39. Johnny Christo says:

    Gore sucks

  40. Hoferfan67 says:

GR, do you think the rams knew the 9ers were going to run??

  41. undercenter says:

    Ok defense hang tuff

  42. msclemons67 says:

Andy Lee is still the offensive MVP. Wicked punt.

  43. Johnny Christo says:

What the hell kind of play calling is this garbage? Oh, that’s right, the kind that’s limited when the D gets pressure on a fragile QB!

  44. Hoferfan67 says:

Do you think they will add the no huddle wrinkle if still flat after the half? let me answer…NOPE!!

  45. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

Why can’t we call a Checkdown from Smith right there. That’s his strength!

  46. big niner says:

The team looks asleep so far…smh…is B jacobs ever going to play?

  47. Hoferfan67 says:

“Terrible third down call by Roman. Rams ball at their 7 yard line.”

Grant, exactly right! Not on the QB it’s what GR knows…COMFORT ZONE!!

  48. 49er42 says:

So far our lines are getting beat badly.

  49. dangle says:

3 negative plays on offense so far. Can’t get bullied like that

  50. msclemons67 says:

This looks like a replay of the Vikings game. The team is asleep. I’m getting nervous.

  51. Nick says:

Run D is bad so far

  52. Hoferfan67 says:

No pass rush and can’t stop their run!!

  53. Nick says:

Bowman was way out of position on the previous play

  54. undercenter says:

Team is flat they will be okay

  55. big niner says:

    wake up!!!

  56. Nick says:

    Saved by a flag?

  57. Hoferfan67 says:

Will GR adjust his game plan?

  58. Nick says:

These mistakes are correctable. I expect the D to be OK

  59. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

    Down 2 scores, game over!

  60. ribico says:

Our SB-caliber defense not looking so SB-caliber so far.

  61. big niner says:

    FLAT!!

  62. domingo says:

Yep, just like the Viking game. I’m worried now.

  63. Big Suede says:

So how far behind do we need to be before we get to see kaepernick?

  64. Nick says:

Let’s see what AS can do.

  65. big niner says:

Looks like they’re beating us at our own game…smh

  66. dangle says:

no panic, just stick with the game plan

  67. 49er42 says:

    Wow!
We are playing poorly on both offense and defense.
This could be a very bad situation.
Down by 14! Let’s see if this team has heart and can come back.

  68. JPN001 says:

Wow – the defense looks out of sync. The offense needs a long drive to give the defense a chance to regroup.

  69. AES says:

Wow! Getting ‘punked’ by the freakin’ Rams.
    Wake up guys, wake up!

  70. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

Alex is elite. He will abandon the Checkdown and throw 2 picks today. The defense has to bear down. Gave up their game average in 2 drives. Elite Alex to the rescue!

  71. Neal says:

Viking game here we go again. Clueless in San Francisco. The Rams want to win and we have checked out.

  72. Adam says:

Terrible play calling on offense and the defense is getting gashed big time. This one could be over early.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

The first two series of plays were all on GR. I think FG is a wonderful run between the tackle RB, but a screen? He’s no longer elusive or as quick! That’s for KH!!

  73. Johnny Christo says:

DSL your little boy 25 got ruined by Amendola. Lets see your little girl 11 make this a game now…

  74. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

    Our defense sucks!

  75. msclemons67 says:

I haven’t seen the defense look this bad since Nolan was here. I expect this sort of game from the offense; from the D it’s inexcusable.

Fangio should start benching some starters to wake them up. Put in some of the young guys and maybe inject some energy.

  76. Hoferfan67 says:

The defense shouldn’t get a pass for this sloppiness.

  77. domingo says:

Need Alex to drive us down the field for a TD.

  78. dangle says:

If they abandon the running game they have no shot. Establish the run first, then work play action off of it.

  79. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

We got a weak azz offensive gameplan. Teams put the ball up down by 14. Will we?

  80. AES says:

Total team ‘stink-out’ from top to bottom at the moment.
Looking past the Rams to the Bears game is proving to be a nightmare.
    Let’s Go!!

  81. Neal says:

Roman is predictable, if we don’t establish the run we will lose. Let’s see if we just pass it now.

  82. undercenter says:

Geez Alex my man dont take hits like that

  83. Hoferfan67 says:

AS isn’t too bright taking those hits!!

  84. BigP says:

Yikes, Smith seems to take those stupid hits a little too often.

    • dangle says:

Its fine, he’s a big boy and he needs those Pops to wake up… Maybe thats whats been wrong so far. Somebody go hit the Defense like that!

  85. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

Smith is not as smart on the field as we think? He’s lucky to survive the shots he takes.

  86. BigP says:

Frank Gore was angry on that one, time to set the tone.

  87. dangle says:

wow, great poise by alex on the throw after getting absolutely crushed on the previous play. that look Painful

  88. msclemons67 says:

Go go Gore. We need him to carry the team today.

  89. Daddy49er says:

The 9ers are getting a can of Whoop A$$ handed to them…. Lets see if they open up a KEG and give it back!

  90. Jack Hammer says:

They play 4 quarters right? Plenty of time. Stick to the plan on offense, and start hustling on defense. 9ers are still going to win this game.

  91. Hoferfan67 says:

This OL can’t pass block today

  92. dangle says:

that looked like generous spot that VD got on that reception

  93. msclemons67 says:

    Run. The. Ball. Crimeny.

  94. 49er42 says:

    1 need a drive for a TD.
2 Alex is a tough sob hope this gets the team going, but don’t do it again.
    3 Can we block?

  95. Hoferfan67 says:

    Clocks ticking

  96. msclemons67 says:

Apparently the refs had a bye week too.

  97. tkamB says:

What kind of spot was that?

  98. dangle says:

There you GO!!!! C’MON! Stick with the GAMEPLAN!

  99. msclemons67 says:

The offense is starting to wake up. Let’s hope the defense is drinking Red Bull on the sideline.

  100. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

    Alex cannot do that…..Can he?

  101. msclemons67 says:

    Nice run Crabtree! Hot damn!

  102. don sykes says:

    All right Alex!

  103. DS94everXev says:

Wide open, nice block MC TD!

  104. Neal says:

Glad Roman is sticking to the run. Crabs is the real deal and now our defense can’t play soft.

  105. AES* says:

Not bad for a WR who can’t get open or have YAC.
    Sorry, couldn’t resist (lol).

  106. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

Alex did his job…Can the defense step up?

  107. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

Culliver is not having a good game!

  108. Domingo says:

    Kapper!

  109. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

Wow! Kap didn’t see williams wide open What on earth was he looking at?
