49ers Week 10 grades: Coaching

SAN FRANCISCO — The 49ers tied the Rams 24-24. Here is the grade for the 49ers coaches.

Coaching: D. The 49ers came out flat in the first half. That’s Jim Harbaugh’s fault.

There’s a pattern forming this season – the 49ers dominate back-to-back games and then lay an egg. They’ve done that three times through nine games. That’s Jim Harbaugh’s fault.

Greg Roman’s first 10 scripted plays were nothing special – they led to zero points.  Roman and the offense got into a rhythm in the second half, but Alex Smith left the game with a concussion after the first touchdown, and it took the offense a few more quarters to get back in a rhythm with backup QB Colin Kaepernick. That’s Greg Roman’s fault.

  1. Hoferfan67 says:

Grant, point on! If AS played they win! This team was not ready for the most part. A tie? Not acceptable!!!

I noticed that too. Which means they will dominate Monday night and then the next game and tie again in 3 weeks. Lol need to put together a nice string of victories

  3. Doc says:

I don’t know about that, six days off and what could be over confidence might play into this one.

Something is lacking from last season to this one.

    Doc

  4. J says:

Curious how people are going to react. Kaep missed 2 potential TD tosses, air mailed a few, and was shockingly lax with the football in his hands.

Have a feeling if Alex stayed in the game, we would’ve won.

    • Jack Hammer says:

Your feeling is probably right J.

    • Sean in Canada says:

Noticed Kaep was carefree with the football in the pocket, too. Was worried a few times but thankfully only bit him once and Miller was there for the recovery.

      • Randy says:

because Kap is still not use to the speed of the NFL game..not including pre-season games. He is still trying to use his legs more than he arm because that is what he does best for now..

    • gpbutches says:

      Try looking at their offense!

  5. Jack Hammer says:

I think that a D grade is about right, but not for the reasons you list. I give it for not adjusting on the punt return team after allowing the first fake punt. The second successful fake was a back breaker.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Can you ever agree? GC, is correct and you just have to disagree! SMH!!!

    • BOS9er says:

      Agree with Jack
Fool me once shame on you, Fool me twice…. well wont get fooled again or something like that. The second one was a back braker. If we had gotten the ball back and ate some clock, there is no telling whether the rams would have enough time to score

  6. Doc says:

    Hey Grant,

    What happens from here?

STL and SF have the same division record, only difference is that SF has more regular season wins.

If playoffs where tomorrow what would happen?

  7. MidWestNiner says:

From what I read I would have to concur with that grade Grant.

  8. JDilla says:

Smith got concussed on the 4 and 1 QB sneak, not the QB run when he got blasted apparently. Interesting how the smaller hit was the culprit.

  9. Adam707 says:

I say F. Roman called horrible plays. When kaep came in he should have established the run to make it easier on kaep. Coming off a bye and having this horrible of a game is just sad. It’s as if they were over looking the rams. Kaep overall did well, but with this performance he showed he is not ready to take over. Smith is the QB for the near future.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      Adam, well said.

    • Jack Hammer says:

He called running plays on 5 of the 6 plays during Kaeps’ first possession. The second possession was right before half and they were more aggressive to get points.

Thought play calling was very good for the most part in the 2nd half, which makes sense since they were able to adjust during the break.

  10. AES* says:

    Fair grade Grant.
I find it hard to believe that the team could not be prepared today.
I remember during a game when the team was playing flat that the great Bill Walsh called a time-out and completely gave the whole team a verbal lashing. And this was a perseason game (lol).

I don’t like the pattern here and Harbaugh will need to make some modifications inside the locker room to get his team back to a SB level mindset and play.

    • AES* says:

      *preseason

    • Hoferfan67 says:

AES, BW would also change things up. They came out in the seconde half fired up. Not always but most of the time it worked!

      • Neal says:

JH is no BW, at least not yet.

      • AES* says:

Hofe, yes I remember the B.Walsh regime. But there were a few games in which the team layed eggs.

Harbaugh is only in his second year as HC and he still is the best thing that has happened to this team in the last 15-20 years.

I don’t like the pattern that Grant alluded too, but I put this game more on the team looking forward to next Monday night.

      • Randy says:

BW had a tie during his coaching regime as well..1986 I believe

      • Jack Hammer says:

BW had a lot of ugly losses in 1988, his final season. That one turned out pretty well.

    • msclemons67 says:

The offense being flat was no surprise but this team absolutely cannot afford to have the defense lay down like that. That was an inexcusable performance by the defense. I hope Justin Smith, Willis, Bowman and company take a long long look at the film tomorrow. I hope they’re embarrassed.

The 49ers need the defense to be on their game every week. Twice this year the defense has played flat and the 49ers lost both games. Being flat is on the coaches and the D grade is well deserved. The only thing that saves them from an F is the fact that they somehow squeezed 24 points out of this offense.

  11. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

“There’s a pattern forming this season – the 49ers dominate back-to-back games and then lay an egg. They’ve done that three times through nine games”.
If this pattern continues, our next egg is due in St. Louis!

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Do you thinks some would have blamed the tie on AS if he played the whole game?

      • MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

        Some definitely would!

      • DS94everXev says:

        hof/montana

What do you mean? They put blame on AS after a Win! A tie/loss..it is revolting time.

      • msclemons67 says:

Considering that Alex was playing like crap before he got hurt, yes.

If CK didn’t have a different number on his uniform I’m not sure I would have noticed a difference.

Mediocrity is the new standard for 49ers QBs apparently.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

MSC, are you clueless. AS stats were 7/8 72 yds and a TD what was his QB rating on those numbers?? Why do you comment when you don’t know the facts?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Can you say 143.7 rating!!!!?

      • MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

        I agree completely!

      • Prime Time says:

Playing like crap before the touchdown drive?
7-8, 72 yards 1 TD, 9 YPA? Gulp gulp, gulp, gulp. Have another lemons!

      • msclemons67 says:

I love how the “stats don’t matter” crowd flocks to stats when they are in favor of the Precious.

3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out before Crabtree took over.

Statistically Alex was fine. Keeping the offense on the field and scoring points? Not so much.

      • MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

This is definitely Alex Smiths team! It’s always been proven but eexclamation pointed today!

      • Prime Time says:

That was a classic Alex led drive getting them into position and score. Stats or not, he engineers scoring drives.

      • AES* says:

Yes Hofe, you know that the usual suspects will come calling.

But this ‘tie’ had many facets of blame.
Just a quick look at Grant’ grades really puts it all in perspective.

Just a weird game as J.Staley put it.

  12. Hoferfan67 says:

MSando calling it straight on his blog:

“Smith joined Arizona’s Kevin Kolb (sacked nine times by Rams) and Seattle’s Russell Wilson (picked off three times by them) as quarterbacks suffering through rough games against St. Louis. His replacement, Colin Kaepernick, struggled with accuracy, missing Vernon Davis and Kyle Williams when they were open. But his scrambling ability was critical for the 49ers as they clawed their way back into the game.”

AS was 7/8 for 72 yds when he left.

  13. gpbutches says:

Someone should tell Harbaugh to let the QBs put their man panties on so, they’ll let them throw the ball over 8 yrds. Kipernick is the future an he had to play Smiths game plan!! Just bad coaching an Harbaugh is overrated. The fan know if they get down that they can’t come back with Harbaughs game plan! We were lol about how he had Kip under center-then he backed him up 4 feet an he ran for a T.D! For christ sakes- play with your QBs strength! What a Moron-This is on Harbaugh! Not the missed field goal. Walsh wouldn’t even have that idiot on his staff! Oh- sorry I forgot about the Giants playoff when are WRs had 3 yrds for a whole game!!

    • I.P. Daily says:

      Zzzz…

    • JDilla says:

people have a such a short memory span these days. calling for harbaughs head after a tie hahaha what a world we live in.

    • Randy says:

Wow..you need to relax..it was a tie,not a loss.Kap was not playing”Smith’s game plan”,he was following his coach’s gameplan-you know, the “overrated” guy who is the reigning coach of the year who in his first season went to the NFC title game with a QB that apparently has to put his “man panties” on.Jeez

    • dangle says:

” The fan know if they get down that they can’t come back with Harbaughs game plan! ”

They did comeback… remember how they were losing 14-0 and then had a lead in the 4th quarter… game plan?… maybe you’ve had a few too many wine coolers.

  14. DS94everXev says:

    Hey coffee
Cutler is out with a concussion as well. Tell me how he doesn’t want to play like you did about AS not playing it tough.

You loser. You suck as a human, and you don’t know crap about the rules. Players/coaches don’t decide anything about concussions. The teams medical staff does. Take that lesson and shove it.

    • Adam707 says:

Can’t play with a concussion. Theres too many tests and protocol by league. No way to get out of it. Anyone who insults smith for coming out is stupid and clueless.

      • dangle says:

What coffee said is just wrong, plain and simple. I don’t even care how the protocol goes, player safety is paramount for the continued existence of the NFL, much less the morally correct thing to be concerned about. As big of a fan as you may be, human life>a football game.
Head trauma is different from all other injuries. If we were talking about playing through pain, like a sprained ankle or broken ribs, thats a completely different story. The long term damage from a continued hits to the head after a 1st concussion increases in severity rapidly, and has real consequences for players lives.

    • MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

      BaBam! lol

    • Neal says:

      BS,

Actually you are wrong, it is not the team doctors, it is a independent neurologist, that can give him the go, than when he get’s the go -ahead , he needs to play two practices one with contact and one not, and he will be cleared if their is no incident.

      • ribico says:

        >>Actually you are wrong, it is not the team doctors, it is a independent neurologist…

DS’s explanation was much closer than coffee’s crazy assertion that Alex should have put himself back in the game.

      • Adam says:

Concussed players have to re-take a test that they took earlier so that the neurologist can compare the answers. If he passes he can come back and do some light duty and contact.

It takes most of the week from what I’ve heard. I would expect CK is the guy probably right up until the weekend (is my guess), then they’ll figure it out for Monday night.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

DS you are totally meaningless. You’re immature, obnoxious and annoying. Most likely your just some fat computer geek kid and blogs like this are your only source of talking to anyone since you’ve already alienated everyone that knows you personally.

I’ve crapped things that have more meaning in life then you.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Coffee

You said I get no replies. Well, as you can see I did. And they agreed. And interestingly, I always get your reply whenever I post to you.

You are replying to meaningless (every time mind you). Which makes you….hmmm….

And you’re still a pathetic human. I’m doing a swell job getting you upset, and I’m supposedly meaningless. Imagine your mental state if I were meaningful. You’d be postal.

PS AS is the toughest QB. Only a hater can think differently. Only a hater wants AS to go back in with a concussion.

Nick, you’ve asked me several times who I call a hater and what a hater writes. Coffee’s post about AS’s concussion is who/what a hater is.

  15. dangle says:

Wow, brandon marshall is ridiculous… off topic, just sayin
