Alex Smith cleared, still won’t start

ESPN’s Ed Werder is reporting that Alex Smith has finally passed his final concussion test and is cleared to play, but Colin Kaepernick will still start against the Saints.

This makes Jim Harbaugh’s intentions clear – he’s going with Kaepernick because he thinks he’s the best quarterback, not because Alex Smith is injured.

  1. Truth says:

Then why did Roman say he hasn’t passed. Dummy. Research for once.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

Ah, Truth, the beauty of running a blog is that it ISN’T journalism, with all those pesky requirements like research, FACTS, using multiple sources, and all that… you just get to write whatever you want. Don’t hold your breath till there’s any sign of actual research or journalism around here. This place is more about good (and not so good) conversation.

  2. Dan says:

Ed Werder and Jim Trotter are bull of B.S. – Unless it comes from a team source (which it hasn’t), why even report on it?

Nothing more than Media trying to manufacture a “breaking story”, in order to get more recognition or accolades for their “insider” information. LAME

  3. 9ersince71 says:

According to Roman sounds like you may have jumped the gun on your praise for Harbaugh in your other thread and maybe this one.
I just love twitter (HARBAUGH TO MIAMI MANNING TO SF ALEX YOUR DONE about 5 times )
Not saying Kaep won’t start,in fact I think it is the right move for this week due to practice time. but I don’t trust anything I get from twitter without confermation from the 49ers

  4. htwaits says:

It may be true, and not a surprise if Alex has passed his concussion test. I’ll wait for the NFL or the 49ers to make it official. Dumb me.

  5. undercenter says:

Not according to Roman. I posted this on the last blog thought it merited to be placed here as well.

    • Sean in Canada says:

So is Roman out of the loop then? Gotta think that the decision has been made and all of these conflicting reports are smoke screens for team bounty.

  6. Hov says:

If kap is taking the first team reps what does that tell you
    Smiters anything for Alex smh

  7. KASHMAN24 says:

Kaep might start but for completely differant reasons than Karpernick has been handed the reigns. All these writer are speculating. It makes me sick these guys printing and skewing things as fact.

  8. Neal says:

I’m off to my Thanksgiving feast with family and friends, while we disagree with AS, like Democrats and Republicans, we do want a Niner Super Bowl and we can chat forever how we can achieve that. This will play out and we will see where it get’s us. I see a bright future and those that say we have a small window to succeed I disagree just because Frank Gore and Justin Smith are in the twilight’s of their careers we have CK and Aldon Smith that are starting there careers. If Joe Montana was replaced, we can certainly replace Justin Smith and Frank Gore. I hope you can spend the rest of the day with the important people in your life, then a keyboard. I’m out and the saga will be here tomorrrow.

    • neal says:

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, while we might disagree on players and decisions , we all do want one common achiehment. A Lombardi trophy

    • fesnyc says:

you can replace any player, the trick is to replace an aging stud and still get studly performance. look at the numer of teams that have won 3 straight Super Bowls and you will understand how short these windows can be. doesnt mean you cant rebuild around a great core of players, esp when you have a HOF qb eg Montana, Bradshaw, Brady, etc. as part of that core.

i think Alex has played well and he might be the guy who eventually brings us a title. but i wouldnt be surprised if harbaugh sees the brighter future with Kaep – or at least wants to see if the vision is an illusion or not

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

Your best post, Neal. Happy Holidays to you and yours!

  9. Sean in Canada says:

Happy Thanksgiving to all down south.

  10. 7x7er says:

I think CK is the right call. Think about it this way, given how talented he is, how hard would it be for him to play Alex-style: lots of check downs, take sacks instead of scrambling, don’t take shots downfield. He can do that if asked.

  11. KASHMAN24 says:

@mattbarrows: GregRoman: Alex Smith could be cleared Friday; no decision on #49ers starter http://t.co/EUCSTh8z
The point is the media is lying. No decision has been made but the media has already ushered the Kaepernick era in.

    • Jai says:

The media isn’t lying. The very private 49ers just got exposed that’s all. The talking points you’re hearing from team sources now, and specifically Roman, are ALL for the Saints. But Harbaugh and the 49ers should realize the jig is up, and stop all the drama. The decision has been made. Now let’s go win a damn super bowl!

  12. AES says:

Sounds more accurate than the other reports Kashman24.

The odds are that we likely won’t have the final word until Friday when Harbaugh makes an official announcement.

    An interesting note:
This may be the day that both the Ryan (Rex/Rob) brothers get canned.
Rob’ defense is getting toasted by RGIII. And Rex may get dominated by the Patriots this evening. But the news (if it happens) will probably come tomorrow.

  13. I.P. Daily says:

Whatever, watching the games so far today, we have to count our lucky stars. Poor coaching, lousy play and stupid errors seem to be the deal for Detroit and the Stars without a lot of separation by the Native People and the Oilers…

Remember the Walsh Niners and how crisp they looked compared to the teams they played? This iteration is very similar. And boy howdy, I’m sure glad I don’t live in a cultural crapswamp like Texas; what a bunch of wankers…

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

The Lions game was particularly rewarding! I did sorta want them to win, but I also think their coach is a Delta Bravo of the first degree. So it was particularly pleasant to see him PERSONALLY cause them to lose. SO GOOD TO SEE, especially after his yelling “Learn the rules, Harbaugh” across the field last year. If HE knew the rules, the Lions would have won yesterday. Woo-Hoo!

  14. Rob says:

When was the last time anyone saw a major scoop involving the 49ers announced by the team’s regular beat reporters? Peyton Manning? No.
Last year’s 1st and 2nd round draft choices. Nope. The SF reporting corps
are awful — not a one that seems to be capable of breaking major news involving this team. We have to rely on New York and ESPN, NFL, and others for news that should, in fact, be coming from the beat reporters here. Says a lot about the current quality of the reporting.

  15. Brotha Tuna says:

Looks like Werder and Trotter are fulluvit.

  16. Chicago49er says:

Happy Thanks Giving to all the Niner fans around the world! GO NINERS

  17. ribico says:

You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end.

    Somehow that snippet seems apropos.

    Happy Thanksgiving, Faithful!
