Alex Smith: “It sucks. I don’t know what else to say.”

SANTA CLARA — Alex Smith just spoke in the locker room. Here’s what he said.

Q: How was the news delivered to you yesterday?

ALEX SMITH: It sucks. I don’t know what else to say.

Q: Did Jim tell the two of you together?

ALEX SMITH: Yeah.

Q: Were you prepared for it?

ALEX SMITH: For sure. I knew just based off the way things have gone the last couple weeks. Didn’t know what was going to happen, but knew that was a possibility.

Q: Is there anything you can say in terms of stating your case?

ALEX SMITH: No. I don’t think talk is the way to do it. You state your case with your play, and I think I’ve done that. I feel like the only thing I did to lose my job was get a concussion.

Q: Do you hold any resentment toward Jim Harbaugh for making that decision?

ALEX SMITH: No resentment. I don’t get to make those decisions. That’s what he gets paid to do. He’s the coach. I play football. I’ll continue to get ready and make the most of my next opportunity.

Q: Are you believer in the adage that you don’t lose your job to an injury?

ALEX SMITH: That’s not something I really think about. This game is about opportunities and making the most of them.

Q: Do you think you’ll be given another opportunity this year?

ALEX SMITH: I have no idea. All I can do is just prepare and get ready.

Q: Does it make it easier or more difficult the way this happened, considering you last full game you were offensive player of the week?

ALEX SMITH: Yeah, it’s tough. You kind of state your case with your play – I feel like I’ve done that. So, in that sense it is tough.

Q: In the past, there have been coaches who have told you there are better quarterbacks for the job. Does the fact that it’s Harbaugh saying it make it sting more?

ALEX SMITH: I don’t know about that. It stings the most because I really feel like there’s something special going on here. You sacrifice and invest so much time. Like I said, I really feel like I haven’t done anything besides get a concussion to really facilitate this. Feel like I’ve been playing good football.

Q: How will you handle this going forward?

ALEX SMITH: I’m in the middle of it right now. I just found out a couple days ago. It sucks, to be honest.

Q: Did you get a full explanation from Harbaugh?

ALEX SMITH: Oh yeah. It wasn’t a one-sentence thing. He explained where he was coming from. Felt like it was a difficult situation, but wanted to go in this direction.

Q: Did you try to talk him out of it?

ALEX SMITH: No. What’s talk going to do? Felt like he made up his mind. He’s not a guy who didn’t put thought into it already.

lol i first read this as “Alex Smith: “I suck. I don’t know what else to say”

    • 49erfaithful says:

That is such a childish thing to say. IT DOES SUCK. Alex did nothing to loose the job. He was number three in NFL. He still leads the NFL in completion %. He was 19-5 going back to last year. So yes he did nothing but get a concussion. So what message does that send to other players? SO YES IT, NOT ALEX, SUCKS.
Put it another way, how would you like to get an injury and come back to work to find your job GONE!

      • jsand3030 says:

No, I think you did read what i wrote. I actually thought it said that when i first read it. That being said, I dont feel sorry for Alex. The only thing that’s childish is your outlook on this situation comparing my job to a NFL players job. Spare me with your stats. Alex was good but not good enough. If you have a problem with the outcome, don’t address me, send a letter to Harbaugh.

      • Bobswire says:

“Put it another way, how would you like to get an injury and come back to work to find your job GONE!”

Apples and Oranges, If I was being paid a few million dollars then was injured then came back and was told the replacement will keep my old job yet I will still be paid sitting back until they needed me again, I’d be crying all the way to the bank with a smile on my face.

      • jsand3030 says:

        *”didn’t read”

      • 49erfaithful says:

No it’s not apples and oranges. I do not care how much money you are or are not making. If you are excelling in your position and get replaced because you were injured then it would suck. If Alex was loosing games for us then yes bench him. He was winning games and at a high level. When he left the Rams games he was bringing the team back from behind. What did Kaep do? Oh yeah got us a tie. Then just last week he an 85 yd drive that ended in a field goal. Had Alex done that he would have been crucified. Everyone would have been saying ‘same old Alex’.
Alex was still improving and yet he lost his job, based on what?

      • jsand3030 says:

Not sure how many different ways to tell you the same thing. It’s based on JH’s opinion. Check wiki if you need his qualifications as a talent evaluator. AS’s talent maxes out way below CK7′s. I think your in denial.

      • rocket says:

The responses that talk about money and how he should be laughing all the way to the bank, show an obvious lack of understanding of what it is to be an athlete. These guys get paid well no doubt about it, but most play because they love to compete and play a game they love. You don’t have to feel sorry for Smith, but don’t say it’s because he’s got money. I guarantee you he doesn’t give two sh*ts about the money right now. It’s about not being able to play when you feel you deserve to be.

    • IMG says:

I never cease to be surprised by the manner in which folks still hate on Alex.
What if Kap gets injured, Alex comes back and wins the SB. Will all you haters still be crying that we’d have won by 2 more touchdowns if Kap had been the starter?

My eyeballs tell me Kap is the more dynamic QB, but I don’t feel a need to belittle Alex, he’s done everything that was asked of him.

      • 49erfaithful says:

Yes I agree, Kaep is the future. But Alex brought this team to within play or two of the SB. I am so tired of hearing how could not play from behind. What a bunch short memories people have. How about last years Eagles game and the Divisional Play-off game?

      • Dude says:

Alex didn’t bring this team to with a play or two of the SB. He kept them from winning it. KW’s fumbles is all we remember about that game and Alex should be thankful for that. He went 1 for 13 on 3rd down and completed 47% of his passes in that game. I didn’t check how many sacks he took to avoid taking a chance. If he avoided one sack (something Kaep has shown he can do) 9ers win. If completed at least above 50% of his passes, which is stilll lousy, 9ers win. If he took a chance and threw into a tight window (remember Crabtree compaining that Smith didn’t do that after the game) 9ers win. So enough with the talk that if it weren’t for a fumble 9ers would have been in the SB. If Smith played better there wouldn’t have been a need for an overtime.

      • rocket says:

        Dude,

Alex Smith threw two TD passes to Vernon Davis in that game. He also led them on a drive that tied the game after the first KW fumble gave the Giants the lead.

You are a typical hater. Ignore the fact they were in the game because of what he was able to do and blame him for not doing more even in the face of clear evidence (10 Giant points due to KW’s muffed punts) staring you in the face. Never mind the fact the Giant defense shut down some pretty good offenses on their way to and in the SB last year. Ignorance is bliss in your case I guess.

      • 49erGirl says:

Dude makes valid points, Rocket – does not make him a “hater”.

The NFC game wasn’t all on KW, he’s just the easy scapegoat. No 3rd down conversions in regulation (that mattered), several missed opportunities in the red zone and offensive ineffectiveness in the 2nd half had a lot to do with that loss.

      • jgwindsor says:

fumbles happening late in the game….

it is pretty lame to put blame on AS when he started the game with two explosive plays…with little WR help..revisionism is alive and well…

      • La-La Land says:

WHO brought them within a play or two of the SB? You mean, our DEFENSE, right? You can’t be talking about Alex Smith, who couldn’t convert a 3rd down to save his soul that day.

I keep hearing how KW “lost” the title game for us. He was the only offensive player trying to make a play. That responsibility should not be on him, but on the QB. Do you think Joe or Steve would have played ‘not to lose’, the way Alex did? Does anyone freaking understand that is why we are going with CK7, because he will take a chance? Good lord, I swear some Smithers live in fantasyland.

      • jgwindsor says:

        like i said revisionist

niner defense did not handle eli or it could be said AS played as well against the giants defense as eli did against the niner defense

      • 49erGirl says:

JG – I said the same thing on the day of the game, no revisionist history. Can’t get a win in the playoffs if you don’t convert third downs and kick more FG’s that TD’s within the red zone.

Niners had several opportunities to put TD’s on the board, but settled for FG’s. Couldn’t convert third downs to sustain drives. If the offense had taken advantage of their opportunities and didn’t squander several drives, KW’s fumbles would have been irrelevant and OT would not have been required. Defense may not have been as tired and may not have given up as many points. The game should not have been close enough to let those fumbles matter.

Is that all on Smith? No. But the loss isn’t all on Williams either.

      • jgwindsor says:

football is 60 minutes and those fumbles were late in the game….should have could of ….fumbles did happen and cannot be denied…

hey i am just as excited as the next person about CK….but this AS bashing

      • Matt says:

Let’s be real here. Alex didn’t bring this team to a 19-5 record. This defense brought this team to that record. The defense and the special teams.
Alex was losing the Philly game last year. Justin Smith won that game. Philly was in field goal range when the fumble was caused. Then he did it again in the following game on fourth down.
Alex Smith has had what 3 blow out wins? That’s 3 games Alex Smith won. The rest of the wins have been the team winning games.
In the same breath, Kaepernick has won 1 game and this defense has won 1 game.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Seriously move on. Half the argument are from folks that don’t like Alex being picked on so they stick up for the very stats that got him benched in favor of another guy.
Lets all move on and put our energy behind our new exciting starting QB CK7.

    • jjj says:

Alex lost his job based on his 3rd down numbers, the number of sacks he has taken putting team in unfavorable down and distances, red-zone efficiency, and the fact that he doesn’t pull the trigger in tight windows. Now if my boss had handpicked someone to groom for my position (Kaep), interviewed someone to replace me (Peyton Manning), then basically had me sign a contract in which he could get rid of me, then I would like to think that MY JOB WAS LOST PRIOR TO ME GETTING INJURED!

      • 49erGirl says:

Yep, writing was definitely on the wall.

Still feel for the guy though. He’s like the man who’s wife has been cheating on him and everyone knew about it except him and nobody wanted to tell him.

Should have been a tip off when Harbaugh tried to say they weren’t REALLY interested in Peyton and it was a misunderstanding because they hadn’t REALLY been pursuing him in free agency. (Kind of sounds like “No Honey, I would NEVER cheat. I was just working late at the office and fell asleep, that’s all…..”)

      • lf says:

I agree with Dude. Alex also missed a wide open Delanie Walker for a TD and Crabtree for a TD. That’s 14 more points left on the field. The one thing I will not blame Alex for is the defense given up a TD on 3rd and 17. In OT Alex did possess the ball and could not move it.

    • SorryNoDice says:

I just thought “Somebody call Alex a WAAAAAAAAAAAAMBULANCE!!!

      What a freakin’ baby.

  2. Jack Hammer says:

Alex is a stud when it comes to being a man.

  3. Hoferfan67 says:

It is interesting he told the them the news at the same time. In all of the management/HR related classes I’ve taking in business, something like this would be seen as a faux pas. It should have been one on one. JH is an interesting guy. Hes an outstanding coach, but very interesting the way he interacts with the media and his players.

    • Jeremy says:

In this kind of situation it’s best to speak to them both at the same time, this way you’re not left with one side asking “well, what did he say to him behind closed doors?”.

This wasn’t a disciplinary type situation, then it should have been more one on one, but for visibility & clarity with the team, saying it to both of them is the better approach.

    • Grimey9er says:

He told them together so nobody wonders what is going on behind their back.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Not knowing all of the details that is true. I wonder how other coaches tell players they’ve been demoted and is their replacement always in the room?

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Hofer,
this is happening to AS for the same reason that he doesn’t have killer instinct on the field. He’s too nice. Not a mean streak to be found in him.
What did Steve Young call it? The “over my dead body” attitude.
If he ever gets a chance again and he lights it up all over the field, then he truly has no one else to blame but himself.
How many times did he tell the media this year, “stats don’t matter?” How many times did he tell the media, “sacks are not a bad thing?”
He didn’t just say those things, he believed them. Well guess what, a QB that is looking to attack like CK, and that has the “over my dead body” qualities that Steve Young describes, doesn’t believe either one of the things Smith said.

  4. Neal says:

I don’t think it was best to discuss this with the two of them in the same office at the same time, it is like your hiring a guy and your firing a guy at the same time.

    • Neanderthal Offense says:

Except that Harbaugh frames the QB position as 3 guys working as one – so it was best to do it together. This is no Joe-Steve situation filled with resentment.

  5. Neal says:

I heard Bill Romo being interviewed today on the game. He said that AS biggest fault, was that he admitted to a concussion, he said played 16 years, and if he went out on every concussion or injury, he would only play six. Interesting take, don’t agree with it but that is his opinion.

  6. 49erfaithful says:

I have lost some respect and trust in Harbaugh over this. I am not saying that I’m not glad he is our coach. Just saying this whole thing was handle wrong.

    • IMG says:

What part of it was handled wrong? He had a long talk with both Alex and Kap together. It was a hard, tough decision and truly awful for Alex but that is what he is paid to do. Make the right decision for the TEAM.

We shall see how it plays out, but you cannot accuse him of shirking his duty or avoiding the tough decision.

    • ninermd says:

What do you know? We’re you there through the whole thing? Nope! So just trust the coach drink your beer and watch this team go to the superbowl

    • thehindu19 says:

Dude you need to get over it. Can you honestly say this offense doesn’t look better with Kaep in the game. Forget stats just use your eyeballs. And Alex was 1 or 2 plays from getting them to the SB but the point is he DID NOT make those plays. Forget the Williams’ fumbles. They and he had countless other opportunities to win that game. And without Harbs Alex is probably holding a clipboard with another team or out of the league. I do feel bad for him cause he is a class act but this is about what’s best for the entire team not 1 guy

    • jjj says:

Lost respect? Why is this move coming to you as a shock? It’s been in the making every year he has been here except last year (1st winning season). I mean JTO, S. Hill, D. Carr, T. Smith, etc. Even Balke implied Smith was a goner prior to the lock-out. The 9ers clearly intended on replacing Alex next year and it just so happens that an injury presented the opportunity now. Thank you Alex for all you have done for the team, but it’s time to turn the page. He’s still a big part of the team and can help Kaep excel in his new role.

  7. CarolinaNiner says:

    I feel bad for Smith.
I think Kaep will end up being the better QB than Smith ever was/is. I don’t think Smith *lost* the job though. I think the best way to go would have been to have Smith reclaim his starting spot, but with the caveat that the position is now open for competition.
I’m excited about Kaep. He passes the old eyeball test with flying colors.
But, man, whether you’ve been a Smith hater or not, the guy has been one of the top 5 -10 QB’s in the league the past 2 years. You have to feel bad for him *this* time.

  8. ninermd says:

It sucks to lose your job. But I don’t think he lost it do to a concussion. That just opened the door. He lost it because ck runs this offense better Nd gives the 49ers a better chance to win. Alex will land back on his feet. Until then stay healthy and ready to play. This is the nfl which means you’re always one play from not playing again. Be ready and if called upon come in and help win some games and maybe a Superbowl. Class act!

  9. Razoreater says:

Not sure what sucks about it. This is a time for rejoicing. CK7 has progressed much more quickly than anticipated. Alex Smiths’ assignment is complete and now he has a new assignment. Be a viable and ready back up, and do not complain and please, please no more pouting on the sidelines.

  10. Hov says:

Awwww Alex don’t cry your still our precious

  11. elMaginator (the artist formally not known as tutomate) says:

I like Alex but I think his biggest Flaw is that he can not see what he has done wrong. It is not that he admitted his concussion it is that he can’t see why we like CK. Sometimes you have to take chances and AS is just too safe with the ball. MJ used to say you cant make the chances you don’t take. Also I can’t remember which coach said this but it was something like ” there two types of players I can’t have Players who never do as they are told and players who only do as they are told.” IMHO AS is the latter.

    • Nick says:

Well said. I had the same thought. Alex doesn’t – even now – realize that his conserative play resulted in his benching. In his own words:

Like I said, I really feel like I haven’t done anything besides get a concussion to really facilitate this. Feel like I’ve been playing good football.

      • elMaginator says:

        Yup,

It is obvious that Jim was worried about this (players thinking twice about revealing concussions) at the press conference.

      • elMaginator says:

        Here is question though,

Would Jim have switched to Kap if AS had not gotten injured?

      • AngusinCanada says:

Well…..Harbaugh had the opportunity to replace Smith with Kaep through 8 games, and he didn’t.
Alex was playing better than ever, so I’d say, no he wouldn’t have replaced him if the concussion didn’t happen. What was Harbaugh waiting for if he was going to?

      • elMaginator says:

I also don’t think he would have. I think though By including packages with Ck he was making it quite clear that next year it was going to be a different story.

The injury just made it clearer to Harbaugh that Ck was ready now, ostensibly.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Canada,
define better than ever. If he was playing better than ever, you don’t lose your job.
You don’t have a wildcat QB come in and take snaps in the red zone.
Lets be honest, he protected the ball and he played safe ball control which equated to high percentage of passes completed.
What he didn’t do was amass enough production. Yards, points ( especially early points ) and third down conversions. Do we forget that we began to question Roman’s offense because the red zone numbers were so dismal?

      • AngusinCanada says:

        Bay,
By ‘better than ever’ I mean he was playing the best football of his career, and was just awarded the NFC Player of the Week Award, was one pass away from setting some sort of single game record for comp%, and was posting crazy completion percentage and YPA for the year. That’s what I mean by ‘better than ever’.

I agree with you on the reasons why they’ve gone with Kaep, but my point is that I don’t think Harbaugh would have made the change if Alex didn’t get injured. He was simply playing too well to allow Harbaugh to do that. The injury opened the door, and Kaep’s good play allowed Harbaugh to make the switch.

Crappy for Alex, but good for Kaep. That’s football.

    • rocket says:

Smith didn’t do anything wrong; that’s why he’s miffed about it. Taking chances is not the secret to winning a football game. The fans might like the fact Kap will throw 2 or 3 more long passes a game, but those are low percentage throws and rarely decide the outcome of a game. Smith is looking at the fact he threw 3 TD passes and had one incompletion in his last full game against a pretty good defense on the road and wondering what gives. It’s natural for him to feel that way.

What tipped the scales in Kaps favor was the teams performance as a whole in the games he played in imo. They looked like they were energized, players were responding to him and then there’s the fact he actually played well. This is a decision that is made based on what a Coach believes will benefit his team right now. Harbaugh has watched his team kick some tail the past two weeks and doesn’t want to mess with the formula. I don’t blame him and I trust his judgement. We’ll see how it works out. Hopefully it results in #6 being put in the trophy case.

  12. dmic says:

I posted on another article but I still feel part of the decision has to be that if Alex gets hurt and is out for the playoffs what would you have? You would have a back up paying with little to no experience. This move, though it sucks for AS, is the best thing for the team right now. We have a 2.5 game lead in the division and have enough games to get a better idea on Kap for the future and if he falters we have a QB that can get us wins in the playoffs and hopefully win the SB. If Kap plays well then we have AS as a backup just incase he is needed. It really isn’t about Kap and Smith its about the niners and this gives us a greater chance down the road with either QB. Look at teams like the Stealers who lost their starter and have nothing going with the backups. Starting Kap is an ego blow to Smith but he knows his own skill and so does the coaching staff, now lets see Kap and get him some valuable reps!

  13. undercenter says:

I dont have a problem with them being told at the same time. Alex and Kap are both men and it puts the cards on the table for all three to see. No wondering about what was said to the other. If this was a normal business it would be a classless act I think here with JH, AS, CK, it would be fine.

As far as Alex saying that it sucked – what would you expect him to say.

    • Razoreater says:

Alex Smith $294,000 a week…it sucks??? C’mon Maaan! Don’t send me an invitation to your pity party. Pull yourself together man. The 49ers may need you.

      • AngusinCanada says:

It has nothing to do with the money. You’re being absolutely disingenous if you don’t understand that for Alex, it absolutely sucks (or you’re a victim of a mental illness manifesting itself through a complete lack of human emotion, and you observe human interaction so you can mimic emotion, and in about 5 years you’re going to go on some crazy rampage).

So, for everyone’s sake, I just hope you’re being disingenous.

      • Razoreater says:

I’m a glass is half full, simple man. I believe Alex Smith knew all along what his job was. Lead, tutor and drive the offense to as many victories as you can until the hand picked Jedi Apprentice was ready. So if your suggesting that he did not realize that, then I would submit that to be disingenous.

    • SorryNoDice says:

He’d have said “no comment,” and kept walking if he had any media savvy at all.

  14. bayareafanatic says:

    So,
how many games for CK before we can begin using his stats as comparisons to justify the move?
Here is one big eye opening stat.
    AS 1st quarter scoring.
    2011 2.8 points aver
    2012 3.2 points aver

CK’s 1st quarter scoring so far
    2012 8.5 points aver

Small sample size yes but interesting right?

  15. jdilla says:

Question to anyone. Why didn’t CK start the season at the helm? I find it hard to believe he somehow improved ten fold from training camp to 8 weeks in the season when he took over. I guess it’s plausible he could have improved exponentially in that time frame, but I have a hard time believing that. I guess I want to know what he improved on so much that the coaches saw he was deficient in during training camp when he had a chance to beat out Smith?

    • Highpriest333 says:

I think the coaches wanted to see how much of a leap forward Alex would make. Also, Crabtree intimated that Kaepernick is better in games than in practice.

    • Foamingatdamouth says:

The coaching staff wanted to bring him along gradually & with little pressure. Plus Smith was elected Captain by his peers, was coming off a modestly successful playoff run & had caddied for Harbaugh. Making Kaep the starter would have been bad for the locker room.

  16. Razoreater says:

Live action under duress and dodging enemy bullets while throwing daggers into the gut, and driving nails into their coffins.

  17. Foamingatdamouth says:

The QB controversy coverage has become excessive in holding a press conference with Smith to peer into his wounded psyche. Give the man some space to salve his wounds, gather himself & refocus on helping the team. This is just excessive & gross. Hate him as a football player, but respect him as a human being. 8 more games to #6!

  18. 23Jordan/ BS is back. Tail between legs! says:

    Smithers,

I told you for years that Alex Smith was not the answer. Nobody knows who the answer is. I’ve just always know and said that Alex Smith wasn’t.
    That’s why I say. ” I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!

    • Neal says:

      Ok Jordan,

Take a deep breath and let’s cook the lambs on Sunday.

    • rocket says:

Way to change gears Jordan. Keep trying.

      • 23jordan/ ROBOKAP!! says:

        Rocket,

Get over it, he’s GONE, just like I said he would be. It just took 11 extra games. Harbaugh did what he could. He realized he was making a mistake with Smith. Just like I told you he was last year. You Smithers never learn. Blinded by your sentimental feeling for another man. Now stop your crying. This is foootball! Theres no crying in football!!!

    • Neanderthal Offense says:

      Jordy

You’re DEAD wrong! Alex was the answer …

With the help of the worst two coaches in the history of the NFL he facilitated about 7 years of top-of-the-draft placement for us; helped to get PW, VD, AS, and so many other studs.

      We should thank him.

    • 23jordan/ ROBOKAP!! says:

      NEA,

Alex wasn’t the answer the day he was drafted. I always knew he didn’t have “IT”. I’ve said it for years. Been saying it on this blog for years. I said I never liked his game. I didn’t like it because it was never going to be good enough. All the complaints I’ve always had about him are the things that cost him his job. Harbaugh could no longer mask all the flaws. #1 defense, #1 special team, and we still weren’t going to beat the giants.
Go back and look at the last Giants game. Alex had no clue. He wasn’t gonna have one the next time we played them either. He never had all the tools. He still doesn’t. Harbaugh saved his sareer. He was a straight bust before Harbaugh got here.
His best bet is to stay her. If he doesn’t you will all see him revert right back to the QB hew was before Harbaugh got here. I’m not being mean. Im telling you my opinion based upon what we know. Alex has played decent in this system because Harbaugh tailored an offense around what Smith could do. What he couldn’t do hurt this team too much. We can’t win a super bowl if we cant threaten the entire field. I’ve said it 50 times on this blog.
Say what you want. Facts speak for themselves. Look at Smiths record before Harbaugh. Look at his record since Harbaugh. I said Harbaugh saved Smith’s career. Got it off of the scrap heap.
Alex thinks he did nothing wrong to lose his job. Kaepernick showed that he could do all the things that Smith could do and more. Like beat quality opponents. Somethimng Smith has a problem with. We’re not talking about winning sometimes. We’re talking about winning all the time.
RoboKap gives us a chance to go undefeated the rest of the season. I believe we will too.

        Infatuation!

      • Neanderthal Offense says:

        I’m TOTALLY infatuated with Kaep’s skill-set, aren’t you, Prime?

      • 23jordan/ ROBOKAP!! says:

        Nea,

He’s stuck in the past. Still sitting in the garage with his red #11 jersey on. Better dump it. It’s not worth much now, never was. What a loser you are prime! Stop crying. There’s a new sheriff in town! RoboKap!!!

      • Prime Time says:

Skill set yes, ability to win a Super Bowl, we will see?

      • exgolfer says:

        Jordan,

You can move to the back of the Kaepernick bandwagon.

        This is for two reasons:

Firstly, earlier this year you said CK might as well be traded, since he was going to be buried on the depth chart.

Secondly, you rarely, if ever, spell his name correctly.

  19. pete4mtx says:

    FINALLY!!!!
Sad day for the SMITHERS BUT THEY WILL COME AROUND WHEN WE ARE STILL PLAYING FOOTBALL I’M FEB……YEA!!!!!!
    Go 49ers!!!!!!

  20. Dude says:

Alex didn’t bring this team to within a play or two of the SB. He kept them from winning it. KW’s fumbles is all we remember about that game and Alex should be thankful for that. He went 1 for 13 on 3rd down and completed 47% of his passes in that game (those are Tebow like numbers). I didn’t check how many sacks he took to avoid “taking a chance.” If he avoided one sack (something Kaep has shown he can do) 9ers win. If Smith played better there wouldn’t have been a need for an overtime which eventually led to Kw’s fumbles. Smith has chances in the overtime to win it and he didn’t. KW has blame for what he did but Alex sucked in that game and people seem to have forgot that.

  21. Neal says:

AS is in denial, if he can’t see a better QB on the field the last three weeks, he did not play well against the Giants, Vikings, Jets and Seahawks. He reminds me of the privileged kid and is getting punished and he does not know why. He does not understand that he can’t see the entire field, has poor pocket skills, get sacked way to often and is horrific on third downs and red zone play. Other then that, you are good. Now Alex take a time out and please go to the corner for the next 8 weeks.

  22. Grumpy Guy says:

There is no crying in football, either.

This is over. Done. Barring an injury or something unforeseen, Alex Smith will close out the year as CK’s backup, then try to restart his career next year, maybe in KC.

All the crowing and all the violin playing is meaningless. Next man up, time to get ready for the Rams.

    • Bray says:

You should see how many fans in other cities are alrealy clamoring for his services. Alex come to Minn! Alex come to the Jets please! KC will treat you right, not like those losers in SF.

      All posts I read today.

      • 23jordan/ ROBOKAP!! says:

I hope he goes. They dont realize that they’ll need JH as well. It takes Smith 2 years to learn a system to be functional. Remember that?? We all know what functional is now. I’ve had enough of functional. Apparently, Jim Harbaugh has too. That’s the harsh reality!

      • Grumpy Guy says:

Alex might well have some success in KC.

New York? No way. If he thought SF fans were rabid, a week in J-E-T-S-Land would have him looking to go into the Witness Protection program. Besides, NO ONE could have success with the Jets. The Jets suck so much that without them, spacetime would probably explode.

      Ouch.

    • 23jordan/ ROBOKAP!! says:

I can’t believe he said it but I certainly can believe he felt that way. He saw what happened. We real, objective 49er fans saw the same thing. I’ve never been in DENIAL! If RoboKap isn’t the answer, I will eventually say that as well. I feel like he is though. Play with heart and leave it on the field. Win or lose. Don’t be like Alex Smith. Don’t save anything for the next down!!!!! Make it happen now!

      • Prime Time says:

If RoboKap isn’t the answer, I will eventually say that as well.

        Fairweather fan!

      • 23jordan/ ROBOKAP!! says:

I’m not in love with a player like you. We lost a starter to a better player and you disappeared like a little girl. I’m a fan of the team. What happen to your swagger blog bully? I guess you lost your job too huh? Bwahahahahahaha!

        Fairweather fan!

        Jordo,

Cyber Monday is over. We’re not buying what you are selling! Now on to the Rams conversation…

      • 23jordan/ ROBOKAP!! says:

        Smithers,

You clowns are really putting a drag on the blog. Now shape up or ship out. You know who you are. I’ve warned you about this move for years hofer! Alex is DONE!!!!! Bwahahahahahaha

      • Prime Time says:

The drag/drama queen talking about being a drag. Some self reflection is what you need pal.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Jordo,

I’ve been here longer than you. If you would post something worth reading maybe some would take you seriously. After reading the comments from you yesterday afternoon, anything you write is an upgrade. Cheers! LOL

    • 23jordan/ ROBOKAP!! says:

      Hofer,

I hear you like wine. Can’t make good wine with those sour grapes!

      Prime crying,

Time to start ignoring your miserable attitude. You’re a sad little fella. Go run along and find BS. You Smithers are pathetic. I hate losing my job to a concussion. You lost it to RoboKap!!!!

      • Prime Time says:

Now lets see CK, your boy? Win a Super Bowl.

        August 6, 2012 at 6:56 am

Josh Johnson will be the 2nd string QB on this team. Kap is not the answer.

  23. GotCrabs?15 says:

JH decided to go with CK. Sucks for Alex. We all know Alex played well so, why rip him? Coaches decision. So,as fans we roll with it and support whose ever under center. All I care about is winning.

    • msclemons67 says:

That is so very wrong. I’m ashamed to have laughed at it.

      • 49erGirl says:

I think the look on Harbaugh’s face while wearing that dress and cuddling up to Kaep is the most disturbing part.

Might have to hang that one on my office wall, lol!

      • Grimey9er says:

Yeah, you can find some good stuff when scouting the enemy. I still have that tab open and can’t stop going back to it.

The wink and that dress. Yowza!

    • 23jordan/ ROBOKAP!! says:

      That is hilarious!!!

    • La-La Land says:

Geez, Grimey, prepare us first. My Thai iced tea just came flying out of my nose. Love Harbaugh’s pose. Too bad they can’t spell our name correctly.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        La-La Land,

Thanks for the shout out yesterday! I have a question for you, are you affiliated with the film studios in LA? I remember reading that you went to London to see the premier of “Skyfall”??

      • La-La Land says:

Yes, though I like to tell myself I’m not as involved as much anymore. It’s kinda like the “Hotel California”…you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Very cool! I enjoy your reads. You need to post here more!

  24. one49ers says:

You want an example of what is happening to Alex Smith. Just ask Trent Dilfer but he actually won the Superbowl and lost his job right after. This is the way this business works and the main difference is that Alex is still collecting a check. Usually you just get fired or not get the job at all.

  25. Hoferfan67 says:

It was interesting listening to SYoung on his KNBR show this afternoon. He mentions AS’s accolades this year such as breaking the 9er interception record, breaking the 9er completion record 18/19, and leading the offense when breaking the 9er offense yardage record, then saying he is being replace by a guy that has played for a game and a half. Steve has a good way of commenting without letting his true feelings come out! LOL

    • Neanderthal Offense says:

      Hofer

What’s your point? Steve Young was more similar to Smith than Kaep. A fair talent, but more importantly a good, hard worker. Threw lots of short passes. High completion percentage. Took lots of dumps under pressure for a long time. Young wishes he was Montana. Montana was an instinctive leader, had the “it” quality (essentially arrogance) necessary to be bigger than the moment. Steve Young never had that. Smith was never gonna get it. Kaep walked onto the field against the Rams and showed it right away.

Are you going to continue to lament poor Alex Smith’s bum deal or are you going to celebrate the emergence of the next great 49ers QB?

      • 23jordan/ ROBOKAP!! says:

        Nea,

He’s depressed, give him 6 months. He’ll be complaining all the rest of this season. Waiting for a real QB with some heart to fail. Alex was JH pet. Well he sleeps on the porch now! Bwahahahahaha

      • Prime Time says:

We will celebrate when Kap wins a Super Bowl not 2 regular season games and a tie.

      • La-La Land says:

Actually, Steve very much had “it”. Worked with him, I should know. Used to think a lot of Joe, but his true colours came through. I would definitely rate Alex a much better person than Joe (person, not player). The reason many of us like CK7 is that he DOES remind us of Steve, albeit with a much better defense and OL.

      • Neanderthal Offense says:

        LA LA

I don’t equate nice person with winner. It’s “nice” that you worked with him.

Joe is the best ever. So is Michael Jordan. So was Th Cobb.

We’re talking about different things, here. If you want to define what you meant by “it,” I’m all ears.

      • La-La Land says:

IT is the ability to make something out of nothing.

IT is carrying an entire team on your shoulders when the front office has imploded and your OC is Marc Trestman.

IT is staying on top of Stokes to make sure he catches balls, to the point that Stokes is given a contract he didn’t deserve.

IT is being the only QB who could control T.O..

Mr. Walsh once told us that Joe never had to be Superman, because of the awesome organization and team he had behind him. Appreciate your fan support for Joe, but it’s quite something to have another team’s group turn to you and say, “Steve is something else.” Joe played for a long time, and given the extraordinary group he had (before free agency and salary cap), he should have won more SBs.

      • Neanderthal Offense says:

        LALA

Fair enough. You’re obviously older than I am. My first football memory was the catch, and to me Joe is the greatest player of all time. I guess I like a guy who goes undefeated (& 11-0) four times in the SB more than a guy who got to work under Mike Shanahan and with Jerry Rice & Terrell Owens at the same time and could win only one. I always say Steve should have won more.

    • 23jordan/ ROBOKAP!! says:

      Hofer,

Did you hear about the QB getting benched yesterday for the Niners? I know you weren’t here. I heard you had to attend a funeral. Please accept my condolences. I’m sorry for your loss! Bwahahahahahahaha! Remember , there’s no crying in football!

    • Jack Hammer says:

      Hofer,

As your post a couple days ago stated, the ex-quarterbacks are all backing Smith, so Young’s comments aren’t a surprise.

Unfortunately for Smith, the only ex-quarterback whose opinion mattered doesn’t agree.

  26. La-La Land says:

Can’t resist…here is a movie clip that is relevant to CK7 (Kato).

The Green Hornet plays Alex Smith. Robert Wagner plays Harbaugh.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4cvTaP7RS8&feature=fvsr

  27. John says:

What does it feel like to know the Niners have a great team with a limited window to win a Superbowl (like most good teams) but you have Alex Smith starting at qb?

    It sucks.

  28. John says:

Alex should consider a career in comedy. He thinks the ONLY reason he lost his job was his concussion? A more truthful response would be ” the only reason I lost my job was Kapernick getting the opportunity to prove he’s the superior qb”.
