Bears-49ers live blog: Fourth quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the fourth quarter of the 49ers Week 11 Monday night home game against the Chicago Bears. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

7:55 Kaepernick just escaped the defensive end, rolled right and threw a perfect pass to Delanie Walker at the goal line, but Walker dropped it.

7:56 On third and 12, Kaepernick hits Davis for an 11-yard gain, and the 49ers are going for it.

7:57 They split Leonard Davis out wide and then call a timeout. Too bad – that play looked intriguing.

7:58 The field goal unit is on the field. It looks like the 49ers have reconsidered going for the first down on fourth and one.

7:59 Akers makes the 37-yarder with 11:46 left in the game. 30-7 Niners.

8:03 Culliver forces Hester to fumble the kick return, but the Bears recover it at their 26 yard line.

8:06 On second and 20, Aldon Smith pushes the right tackle Gabe Carimi all the way back into Campbell. Aldon and Justin combine for the sack.

8:10 Aldon Smith beat Carimi again, hit Campbell and forced a fumble. Chilo Rachal picked it up and passed the ball forward to no one. He gets flagged for intentional grounding. I never though Rachal was a good quarterback.

8:11 The 49ers are challenging the ruling on the field. They think it was a safety.

8:11 It looks like Aldon Smith sacked Campbell in the end zone. He’s having one of the best games an outside linebacker/defensive end has ever had.

8:12 NFLGSIS gives Aldon Smith half a sack on that play. Justin Smith gets the other half. Aldon Smith currently has five sacks in this game. Justin Smith has one.

8:14 The refs rule that after the sack fumble, Ray McDonald tackled Chilo Rachal in the end zone for a safety. 32-7 Niners. Ginn returns the punt to the SF 37 yard line. Kaepernick is still in the game.

8:17 On third and nine, Gore runs up the middle for four yards. Fourth and five and the 49ers will punt. This game is over. I’m going down to the field. Back at you shortly.

  1. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

    One more TD pass Kap.

  2. big niner says:

    Cambell soup

  3. domingo says:

Kap has missed a couple of down field overthrown passes. Maybe its to much first game enthusiasm. But he has more than made up for it with some great throws and more importantly the obvious spark and energy that his presence has added to the forty-niners.

  4. domingo says:

    Great play by Kap!

  5. BigP says:

That throw to Davis was incredible.

  6. big niner says:

they still might be going for it after that time out. Where is B jacobs now?

  7. Big Suede says:

I am looking forward to Delanie Walker being gone next year. I am tired of watching balls bounce off his hands.

    • steelematic says:

Only thing about that… he helps out everywhere else. he just needs to attend the brent jones school of catching

      • Big Suede says:

Walker is a good TE- some team will pay him 4 mil a year. They can have him. They are due for drafting a TE next year anyway

  8. 49er42 says:

    Take the field goal.

  9. ninermd says:

Can anybody tell me what the flag was on the pitty points sack and fumble. I don’t think there was one. And it gave them points. What was it?

    • undercenter says:

push in the back, bad call refs

    • big niner says:

garbage is what it was !!! even the officiating expert on tv was wondering wtf it was?

      • angry fan says:

that ridiculous and horrible call led to the bears somehow scoring a td which meant to me that i went from 2nd place to 3rd place in a fanduel game (difference being $1K).

wtf kind of a call was that?????!!!! those refs should get killed.

    • msclemons67 says:

Even the former ref called that a bad flag.

      Bring back the replacements.

  10. xJHaws52x says:

I’m loving Kaep… but I don’t think they need to pull smith. It might screw with the rhythm, don’t you guys think?

  11. steelematic says:

Great throw off of 1 foot. What a bullit

  12. big niner says:

Let’s see Aldon get his 5th and break the monday night record!!

  13. xJHaws52x says:

Hey ninermd. It was a wrong call by the refs- a push in the back by aldon cuz he was trying to get the ball… that’s not a actual call lol

  14. Harpo says:

Kaep should be the starter from here on out. Trade Alex in the offseason.

    • Neal says:

No one would want AS in a trade, it will take him 3 or 4 years to learn a new system.

    • Big Suede says:

NO WAY. Alex Smith is a PRIME BACKUP.

I am pro-Kaep- but Alex Smith is still a good person. He is a good game manager type- that is what you want in a backup. And he isnt making too much. They should keep both for the next couple of years.

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Can you pay your backup 7 million and your starter makes 500k? Not very nice. I say we dump that. 7 million dollar backup once and for all.

  15. xJHaws52x says:

Alright that makes sense. Ill give that to you.

  16. Houston 9er says:

Wow! Team looks great. Good Bounce back by the defense. CK looks good.

  17. steelematic says:

I didnt c smith smile in that shot. he looks like a man that knows his job isnint safe

  18. big niner says:

I’m loving my #99 jersey!!! I’ll be flosin it tomorrow ;) yes I said floss.

  19. BigP says:

Gabe Carimi looks like a matador, Aldon just slapped him into his own QB.

  20. Neal says:

    SmitherVille has now been vacated.

    • Prime Time says:

Neal you want to bet that if Alex is healthy he starts against the Saints?

      • Neal says:

        Prime Axel,

What would we bet, if I win you leave this site for two weeks, we know how that turned out. The thing is JH even if AS is healthy, he will say he needs more time to recover.CK will be the starter.

      • Prime Time says:

Cold hard cash? Man up, any amount you want then?

      • Neal says:

        Prime Axel,
How can I bet someone that has so many names You will rip me off because you have so many aliases. Do I make out the check to Prime Time, Axel Foley, Prime Time Axel foley welcher, it would be so confusing?

      • Prime Time says:

We will get Grant to administer it. He can get both our emails and go from there. Are you in?

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

      Neal,

You just killed me with that one bro!!! That was an instant classic!

  21. whatever says:

    what ? incomplete pass ?

  22. BigP says:

Ahahaha! The Bears are getting punked on national TV. That should have been called a safety.

  23. Harpo says:

That was a god durn safety!

  24. msclemons67 says:

How is that not a safety?

  25. big niner says:

that’s a safety!!1 what are these officials doing?

  26. undercenter says:

    Its a safety or fumble

  27. Nick says:

    These refs suck

  28. steelematic says:

I think this game is more about Kap than the D… We are playing a jakked up offensive line n a backup qb… But kap is still playing against the top 5 defense of the bears… He has looked GREAT. Not ok but great. If this man isint starting at the 1st sign of trouble then heads are gonna roll. im

  29. BigP says:

    Safety!!!!

  30. steelematic says:

The real test for our D will be next week in new orleans

  31. Big Suede says:

    WHAT ARE THEY DOING NOW???

This is Tolzien time! Harbaugh doesn’t have enough experiences with blowouts. He needs to learn to put the backups in when the game is out of reach

  32. undercenter says:

Time to get Gore out of there, might be nice to see Tolzien, give him some experience.

  33. 49er42 says:

Take Gore and J. Smith out of the game

  34. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

I fell asleep for a minute. How many turnovers does Kap have? We all know he cant take care of the football!!! Lol.

  35. big niner says:

AS is like, ” let me in coach”

  36. big niner says:

    back up lineman in

  37. Jack Hammer says:

    Prime,

Gotta give you some props for sticking around and not turtling like some other fans. We disagree, but you earned some respect tonight.

    • Prime Time says:

It’s never personal Jack. Yes we joke around and it gets out of hand but its always about football and winning games.
I don’t care for any one player, I have said that ad nauseum. To me whoever can win games should play. If JH thinks that Kap, Alex, or Justin Bieber, who cares!

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

      Jack,

Sounds like we need to add flip flopper to prime clowns many names!! He unbelievable. Now he just wants to win. 7 weeks ago, he wanted Alex Smith to get a pay raise to 10 million a year! Lo.

  38. Nick says:

Chicago is trying to run out the clock

  39. Nick says:

    That was major holding

  40. big niner says:

    holding there against rjf

  41. La-La Land says:

Watching Kap play after so many years of Smith is like walking into a laserium/exploratorium show after years of walking in fog.

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

      La-La,

Absolutely so true. I’ve told this blog for 2 years that I was tired of seeing paint dry.
I must say, I don’t think Kap is ready yet.

      1. runs too much
      2. Inaccurate
      3. Won’t stay in the pocket.
      4. Doesn’t like Crabtree.
      5. He broke Moss’s finger with a pass.
      6. Has no touch
      7. He turns the ball over too much.
      8. He runs with the ball away from his body.
      9. He’s UNDEFEATED!

( Post written with extreme sarcasm!!!)

    • foamingatdamouth says:

      Exactly!

  42. big niner says:

    holding like crazy!!

  43. big niner says:

scott Tolzein time!! come on JH

  44. Nick says:

Like Steve Young said, this was a statement game and the Niners made a major statement.

  45. Nick says:

Time to bring on the backups

  46. Jack Hammer says:

Is there a better garbage time back in the NFL than Dixon?

  47. Giant Fan says:

Harbaugh: well Alex, these concussions can be tricky things… Why don’t you take the rest of the season off, we’ll talk in training camp next year.

  48. Concussion says:

Haven’t heard anything from Hoferfan76! Got to love it when haters have to eat their words! Kap has made this team better! It’s good to be a Niner fan. Thanks for playing with heart AS and giving us all you had.

  49. jgwindsor says:

    nice game niners…defense showed up
    OL showed up
    CK showed up

it was definitely a different feel to this offense, will be interesting how the coaches handle the team going forward

    • msclemons67 says:

How about Bowman? What team has the best ILB in the league (Willis) suddenly overshadowed by the new guy?

It’s like the 2004 Ravens had a new LB play better than Lewis.

  50. Jack Hammer says:

In Kaep’s 7 1/2 quarters of play, the 49ers have out scored the opponent 49-17.

  51. msclemons67 says:

In his first professional start Kaepernick is 16-23, 243 yds, 133 QBR. Against one of the best defenses in the league.

Not his eighth season. His first start.

  52. Tyrant.com says:

Only score for bears was gift wrapped by officials

  53. big niner says:

anyone understand what Urlacher told CK?

  54. Hoferfan67 says:

Great game!! CK looked outstanding tonight and played very well from the pocket which was impressive. He displayed quick feet and extended play ability. CK deserves all the credit he gets from this game. Also impressive was the OL which played their best game this year. It was also good to see that GR finally included VD into the game plan after 4 weeks of being a decoy/blocker. Overall, outstanding game by all of the 9er players after last week’s tie. Good times.

  55. Nick says:

Meanwhile there was also a basketball game on tonight: Golden State won too

  56. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

I wouldn’t want to be Jim Harbaugh right now? Can he really start Kap over a healthy Smith?

    • Prime Time says:

Yes and if Alex falters then pull him. It’s not rocket science. They owe Alex that much.

      • Randy says:

yes they do..I love Kap,but our starter that every one hates still took to this team to the title game last year..a game that he would have won if not for special team miscues..that being said,if Alex is sucking….

    • Giant Fan says:

It would be a bold move, but it seems like the right one. If it doesn’t go well with Kap, they always have a capable backup with Smith.

    • domingo says:

I think that NFL protocol will dictate here. Short term injuries do not take away a starters position. Alex will start again. Hard for me to say that but the caveat is that the writing is now on the wall for ALL to see. Not the end of the Alex Smith era BUT the beginning of the end for better or worse. The process will take some time.

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Harbagh just said in his presser that there is no rule for him as far as a starter losing his job to injury. He said that he will make that decision at the time. He didn’t commit to a healthy Smith. If the coach doesn’t commit to a starter, I’d say that means we have a QB controversy! Looked like Kap created one to me.

  57. Giant Fan says:

It would be a bold move, but it seems like the right one. If it doesn’t go well with Kap, they always have a capable backup in Smith.

  58. Tyrant.com says:

Bill Walsh never went for sentimentality, best player plays. Kap

  59. 49er42 says:

    I start Kap.
I want to see how he does on the road, in a dome, against a hot team.
If he can put up 30 against the Saints and if they win the game then he is the real deal.

    • BigP says:

The Saints defense is ranked #32, dead last. How would scoring 30+ points against the Saints be more relevant then scoring 30+ against the Bears, who have a top five defense?

  60. AES* says:

Breakout game for CK7. But AS will continue to be our starter when he’s ready to return.

Can we all agree that it’s time to stop the ‘one look and run’ noise or label on CK? That talk suddenly looks ridiculous.
The kid threw for over ten-thousand yds in college. Point: He can throw from the pocket. He proved tonight that he is not a gadget QB.
I loved what the kid did tonight against one of the best defenses in the league, and I love that the unfair labels were put to rest.

The defense gets huge kudos tonight and Aldon is a man among boys.
VD was involved and it produced a big lift to whole team.

Can’t wait to see Grant’ grades.

  61. Tyrant.com says:

Kap looked like this in the last preseason game also.he sees big plays down the field that Alex never has.also, how many sacks did he avoid that would have been big losses with alex

  62. bayareafanatic says:

Can I say I told you so? Guess Kaep is a pocket passer huh? No running barely at all.
And the defense benefited. Because if the lead they got to pin their ears back and get after Chicago.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

CK played outstanding from the pocket tonight. Based on JH’s response, it looks as though he plays against N.O. next week.

    • neal says:

The end of era is over,Kaep has shown us in one game that Smith can’t do in 8 years, no more mediocrity. The players love to play for Kaep, we got our mojo back, we got a talented QB, not some boring accountant under the center.VD is.getting the ball, no more limitations.

  63. Jack Hammer says:

I am high on Kaep, but the real test is if he plays next week on the road.

I know the Saints D is weak, but that is still the next test he needs to pass.

  64. Tyrant.com says:

Kap looked like this in the last preseason game also.he sees big plays down the field that Alex never has.also, how many sacks did he avoid that would have been big losses with alex. Just listened to harbaugh. Got a feelin kap will start next week

  65. 49er42 says:

JH is hinting it could be Kap next week.

  66. Fansince 77 says:

Man that Bears D was NOT as advertised.

Alex Smith led Niner Offense = Efficient.
Colin Kapernick led Niner Offense = Explosive.

That’s the difference. I’m stating the obvious.

It’s just one game. He’s not the greatest thing since slice bread. But he can be. He’s got a little Aaron Rodgers the way he runs and scrambles and throws…

  67. The Grinch says:

I think the players prefer Kap….Looks like they were having fun…Alex is easily sacked at least 4 times if he was playing.

  68. Fansince 77 says:

Harbaugh just said he’s going with the hot hand. That’s tough on Smith.
The main reason CK7 looks so good was because the O-Line played really well. And when they don’t, CK7 can bail them out.

Here are the teams that need a QB next year that Alex can play for:
    AZ
    JACKSONVILLE
    OAKLAND
    PHILLY
    BUFFALO

    • msclemons67 says:

It takes Alex 2 years to learn a new system. He’ll need to be a backup behind and established starter in order to avoid embarrassment.

Maybe the Bucs or Ravens would pick him up.

  69. Tyrant.com says:

Harbaugh may not be Bill Walsh, but he isn’t blind. Kap will start next week

  70. LSX says:

CK7 earned the right to start again next week, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they go back to Smith.

  71. msclemons67 says:

Vernon Davis: “I felt like someone took the handcuffs off me tonight”

    • Prime Time says:

Yeah cause Urlacher and Briggs cannot cover. Roman found a weakness and exploited it. The Rams, Seahawks, Giants had guys and scheme to cover him. That’s why he never got the ball. But I know what you say, it’s was because of the Prec…..GTF outta here!

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Prime Idiot, there is not a defender in the league that can cover Davis 1 on 1. Kap made several throws that Smith could onlydreamofmaking.Vernonsaid as much when he was interviewed after the game. Smith needs vernontobeathis guy by5 yards to throw him the ball.

      • msclemons67 says:

So you’re saying that Vernon Davis doesn’t know anything about football?

        Ok then.

      • Prime Time says:

23 idiot, please proof read before hitting post comment. I cannot understand a word you wrote.

  72. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Vernon Davis: ” Colin is the Man!” “He made a couple of 2nd window Tom Brady like throws.” He said Colin made a couple of throws to him that he wouldn’t normally get with Alex Smith in the game.

  73. AES* says:

VD is saying that CK7 made a Tom Brady type throw to him, and also called CK ‘da man.’
Very diplomatic in saying that he will support whoever starts. But I’ve never heard VD say that AS ever made a TB type throw before. Those words will get back to Harbaugh no doubt.

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

AES, Harbaugh is an ex- QB. He saw those throws. He knows that we saw that too. JH needs to find out if Kap can do it on the road now. Kap opened up the offense. Unlike Smith has done this year except for Buffalo.

  74. AES* says:

Last week I felt that had AS finished the game against the Rams that we may have won.

I honestly must say that had AS played this game, I don’t know that we could have won. CK did some things tonight that AS would not be able to do and that could have made a difference in the scoring.

  75. whatever says:

GR opened the playbook with CK under center tonight.

  76. msclemons67 says:

Steve Young: “I think Harbaugh wants Kaepernick to play”

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      Clem,

Both TDilfer and SYoung were shocked by JH’s comment, “we go with the hot hand”! Since when? I believe he just threw AS under the bus that he called other coaches out for doing the same thing. Especially in front of a big SF media brigade. CK played outstanding, but JH lost some of his HC control. Not good thing to do to any player.

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

        Hofer,

Apparently you didn’t see the entire press conference. You fail to realize that after JH said we’ll play the hot hand, he mentioned that both of his QB’s had a hot hand. He said that he didn’t know who he would start and they would have to see.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Jordo,

I saw it. Both SY and TD stated that JH made an incorrect move with that statement. I agree. If CK is his guy going forward, he owes it to AS to tell him in person first. It wasn’t a cool move even understanding that JH was giddy from the win.

      • Prime Time says:

Hof if healthy, Alex starts. Don’t get caught up in all this childish emotion. He had a good game but its one game.
You give Alex the opportunity to compete when healthy. If he falters, you yank him. But you can’t go with Kap then expect Alex to come in if Kap plays poorly. You lose the player and lockeroom by saying that its possible to lose your job because of injury.
These people that say Kap should start because of tonight are all emotional right now. Everyone needs to calm down and look long term at all the options before a decision is made.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

According to TDilfer he is already causing the locker room to stir with those comments. The musical chairs of QBing is not a good thing.

      • BigP says:

Prime Time says: “Hof if healthy, Alex starts. Don’t get caught up in all this childish emotion.”

Yes Hofer, listen to Prime Time’s clairvoyant ramblings from earlier in the day. “And when Kaepernick comes out and looks like a deer in headlights tonight and coughs up the ball, it will be an epic night cause then finally you haters will realize he is not ready. I can’t wait to see the egg on your faces later this evening.”

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        BigP,

I’ve heard a lot worse from some stating even that JJ would be starting by now after supplanting CK as the #2. Now the same person is acting like CK was his pick in the draft.

Enjoy the win! CK was outstanding tonight!!!

      • Crab15 says:

Hofer – The Jimi curse is 2 for 2 now. Worked for Cardinals game but (not available for Rams game). In case you missed it in pre-game live blog:
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4QghNBwyt8

      • BigP says:

        Hofer,
When somebody says it will be an “epic night” because they anticipate the second year, backup QB will turn the ball over, well….that is about as bad as it gets. I can’t say I am surprised though, I have come to expect it.

  77. AES* says:

Maicco is saying that it will be hard to keep CK7 out of the starting lineup.

  78. OpenMinded says:

The team, the team, the team. OL, DL owned the Bears. For those who love stats and nothing else… Jason Campbell had eight incomplete passes, CK seven; in as many pass attempts. But CK was sacked only once. Campbell six times. Two INTs by Niners D, zero for the Bears D. Bears fumbled three times and lost two of them (one for a safety). Niners, no fumbles. Kills me that this same stellar D got handled by the Rams. Steven Jackson is a beast but Matt Forte is no slouch. How can they gain some consistent play? Loved the win! Tough game at the Superdome coming up. Go Niners!

  79. 49er42 says:

    1. Having two good QB ‘s is valuable.
    2. The Offensive line played great, they need to keep it up.
    3. We know what Alex can do, let’s see what Colin can do.
    4. It is clear Colin has the better arm, he is VERY mobile, I want to see if he can handle a possible shoot out.

  80. Tyrant.com says:

Harbaugh has a choice stick with a game manager that doesn’t make many mistakes, but hold the offense back from full potential or go with an exciting young qb that lights up the scoreboard. I think he know which one gives niners best chance at super bowl. Go kap

  81. bayareafanatic says:

It’s ridiculous that a group of you had to see another QB come in and drive this Ferrari to admit that this is a high powered offense. Peddle to the metal. Hoe many check downs did you see? Every time Kaep bailed the pocket he kept his eyes down field.
Now Roman is all of a sudden a genius? Same offense, it’s just where the QB chose to throw in his progression.
Same guys that blasted Grant for his controversy article.

    • AES* says:

Good point Bay. The coaches and players all said that the game planning was the same as usual.
Same game plan, more positive results against the #2 defense in the league. Does make one wonder, hmmm.

  82. Brodie2Washington says:

Some say CK7. Others say “Turlock Tornado.” The nickname contest is on!

  83. Dr.D says:

Astonishing that Rachel still gets an NFL paycheck – any line with him in the lineup will be terrible!
