Bears-49ers live blog: Kaepernick pregame

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for Colin Kaepernick’s pregame warmup before the 49ers Week 11 game against the Chicago Bears. I’ll update this frequently with everything Kaepernick does on the field before the game.

3:38 Kaepernick just stepped onto the field, and the first thing he does is stretch his hamstrings. Now he’s stretching his quads. Interesting that he warms up his legs before he warms up his arm.

3:40 Now he’s hopping up and down the field, doing dynamic stretches all by himself. He looks like a sprinter getting ready for a race.

3:42 Kaepernick is stretching his shoulders.

3:43 Kaepernick just threw his first warm up pass. He’s throwing 10-yard flat-footed passes to Kyle Williams.

3:44 Now Kaepernick is taking a step before firing 20-yard missiles at Williams.

3:45 Every 49er is leaving Kaepernick alone. He’s talking to nobody.

3:47 Kaepernick just threw his first slant pass. It was on the money.

3:48 Jason Campbell and Josh McCown just ran to midfield to talk to Kaepernick. They talked for a minute or two before Kaepernick ran back to warm ups.

3:53 Kaepernick just threw a perfect 30-yard deep post on a rope. He looks amped up for this game. The ball is exploding out of his hand.

3:54 Kaepernick just missed two throws in a row – one as he rolled to the right and the second as he rolled to the left.

3:56 Gore just bumped fists with Kaepernick.

4:02 Kaepernick just ran down the steps of the old Giants dugout to go the 49ers locker room.

4:38 Kaepernick just ran back onto the field. He’s wearing his pads and his uniform and firing passes to a trainer.

4:41 Now Kaepernick is firing passes to Jim Harbaugh.

4:46 Kaepernick is stretching his hamstrings again. I’ve never seen a quarterback stretch his legs so much before a game.

4:47 Now he’s hopping up and down. He looks like a sprinter who’s dying for the race to start.

4:48 Now Greg Roman is telling Kaepernick something at the 10 yard line. Roman has been talking for the last two minutes.

4:49 Roman walks away. Kaepernick puts his helmet on, picks up a football and walks toward his team.

4:51 Kaepernick and Harbaugh are taking turns throwing deep passes. Kaepernick is flicking them 35 yards. Harbaugh has to muscle up to throw the ball that far.

4:57 Alex Smith is talking to Kaepernick as he goes through his final warmup throws.

5:05 Kaepernick just threw a 35-yard TD pass to Vernon Davis.

5:09 Kaepernick is pacing around the end zone holding his helmet in his right hand. The 49ers are still leaving him alone for the most part.

Now he is picking his nose. Sorry, couldn’t resist. Glad to hear he’s focused like a “laser” beam. Good luck kid!

  2. LSX says:

Seriously, don’t be a creeper Grant. What’s with the second-by-second updates? Who cares?

  3. Neal says:

Geez Grant, your making this sound like a Tyson Hollyfied fight, getting exciting, ok got to go home and now and get game ready.

    • Grant Cohn says:

That’s what this game feels like to me. I’m pumped.
And by the way, Neal, you misspelled Holyfield.

      • Prime Time says:

Some big questions will get answered tonight. Epic success or epic failure. This game is so huge for CK and his future not only on this team but his career in the NFL. I’m pumped as well!

      • Adam says:

Can’t be black or white just yet. CK really hasn’t had much time to prove much. Hard to judge him (overall) so far.

All I want to see from these guys is progress week over week – even if it’s small. If that happens we’re good.

Even small setbacks are not season killers. We have to be practical about this, CK is just getting his feet wet.

      • Prime Time says:

Adam we don’t have time to see progress from week to week. We have to win tonight as we are still in the hunt for the #1 seed. Sorry CK, it s go time. We need a big win and this is his time to deliver.

        Prime,

Your take on this is not realistic and I guarantee you the team is not going to base their view of his long term future on how he plays in his first NFL start against one of the best defenses in the league. You are holding Kap to the same unachievable standards that you accuse the Smith haters of doing.

Kap has been in the league for a year and a half. He’s had about one games worth of snaps and was going to be at least a two year development guy coming out of College. Saying his first start is make or break or is going to determine his future on the team or the league is ridiculous I’m sorry.

      • Prime Time says:

Rocket you said make or break not me. I said this is a huge evaluation game and an opportunity to showcase himself. If you think the organization is not putting value into this game, and seeing what he can do well what other time is there?
I’m not hating an saying he is gonna fail. My issue is this is a huge opportunity for him to create his path in the NFL. If its here or somewhere else, this game will tell us a lot about who CK is.
        Do you disagree with that?

  4. Adam says:

“3:56 Gore just bumped fists with Kaepernick.”

    :P

  5. AngusinCanada says:

OMG! Kaepernick just fell down the stairs! OMG!
    Tolzien is warming up now.
Grant, did you see that!!?!!? OMG!

Oh, wait, no, never mind…. That was a liquored up fan with a Kaepernick jersey on in the bleachers.

  6. highpriest333 says:

Kaepernick is about to open some eyes tonight. I’m so hyped!

  7. Jen says:

I would love to have your job Grant! That is awesome…keep it up!

  8. Adam says:

“4:02 Kaepernick just ran down the steps of the old Giants dugout to go the 49ers locker room.”

Quick sidestep here, your post made me think of this…

Grant do you think the Giants play a few games in the Stick before it’s closed down?

I’m hearing some noise about that. I kinda like the idea. Sort of a send-off tour.

    • Grant Cohn says:

That would be really cool. A great idea. I hope it happens. I’ll ask around.

    • AES* says:

      Adam,

Having the SFGiants play at the Stick would be a great.
Personally I would prefer to see them play exibition games rather than regular season games. The other thing to consider would be if AT&T has contractual obligations that require the Giants only to play at AT&T.

But if that can be worked out, having the Giants play at the old concrete girl would be nice.

  9. elGuapo says:

This is a grand stage for Colin Kaepernick’s first career start. Monday Night; Prime time (no relation to our beloved Prime Time); vs the Bears; at home. As good ol’ Grampa elGuapo would say … “Bautismo por fuego”. Hope this kid has nerves of steel.

  10. AES* says:

If CK7 fails (or craps in his bed as one observer writes), he will still be high on the Harbaugh/Baalke QB meter.

To judge CK on one start and to expect him to play like a polished veteran is absolutely bogus.
As I said last week, even if CK plays lights out (the extreme opposite of crapping), AS is still the starter.

All I expect from CK is to try and play as mistake free as possible. In other words, don’t do anything stupid (lol).

    • Prime Time says:

But is this not the same opportunity to launch his career like Kolb and Matt Flynn did? Especially on MNF, the biggest stage to show everyone what you are all about. It’s a big task but the great ones embrace it and lock it down. Im excited for the kid!

  11. JDilla says:

CK is now drinking a red/orange cup of gatorade….your man crush updates are funny

  12. Neanderthal Offense says:

Kaepernick just flicked a pass 90 yards from his knees. There is a smoking hole the size of a football in the center of Peanut’s chest…
