Bears-49ers live blog: Third quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the third quarter of the 49ers Week 11 Monday night home game against the Chicago Bears. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

7:12 The Bears have the ball to start the second half. Let’s see what adjustments, if any, Tice makes.

7:14 Big surprise – Tice makes zero adjustments. He calls runs on first and second down and a pass on third down. Aldon Smith sacks Campbell for the fourth time this game. The Bears punt. Niners ball at their 38 yard line. I’d be surprised if the Bears scored a single point in this game. It’s tough to take them seriously as a Super Bowl contender with this offensive line and this offensive coordinator.

7:20 On third and six from the Bears 10 yard line, here’s what happened: Kaepernick dropped back, but his first read over the middle wasn’t open. So he extended the play, allowed Crabtree to free himself in the back of the end zone, and hit the receiver for a beautiful touchdown. 27-0 Niners. Smith cannot ad-lib like that. He’s got to be the 49ers back up quarterback from here on out. He’s good, but he’s not a playmaker like Kaepernick.

7:30 The Bears drive into the 49ers territory, but after a holding penalty they face third and 19 from the 49ers 36. Campbell scrambles and gets planted into the ground from behind by Ahmad Brooks. Campbell fumbles and the ball bounces out of bounds. Campbell is shaken up and walking slowly off the field.

7:32 Harbaugh has to figure out how he wants to make the transition from Smith to Kaepernick. If Harbaugh doesn’t make the transition, he’s making a mistake.

7:33 The refs call a 10-yard penalty on the 49ers after the play. First and 10 for the Bears at the 49ers 27 yard line, and Campbell is back in the game.

7:36 On third and 7, Campbell takes a huge hit from Aldon Smith as he completes a 9-yard first down pass.

7:37 Where did this come from? Campbell escapes a Justin Smith sack, scrambles to the right and throws a perfect pass to Brandon Marshall in the end zone. Campbell threw it high and Culliver couldn’t reach it. Great pass and great catch. 27-7 Niners with 3:43 left in the third quarter. This game is still over.

7:45 On first down, Hunter gains 8 yards on a sweep to the left. On second down, Roman calls a brilliant play action shot play for Davis. Kaepernick throws it 70 yards and overthrows Davis by a step. On third and 2, Roman call Sprint Right Option. Kaepernick throws quickly to his primary receiver, Crabtree, who gains just one yard. Lee punts. Bears ball at their 16 yard line.

7:50 On third and three, Campbell overthrows Brandon Marshall on the left sideline and Dashon Goldson easily picks him off. 49ers ball at the Bears 37 with 11 seconds left in the quarter.

7:51 Kaepernick scrambles for five yards on first down and the third quarter ends.

    Please don’t go conservative.

  2. big niner says:

I agree, our D needs to come out beasting again the second half.

  3. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

We will get conservative in the 2nd half!

  4. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

    Aldon Smith!!!!!

  5. domingo says:

    Sack four for Smith!

  6. big niner says:

    swim Aldon swim!!

  7. msclemons67 says:

I must have missed the news. When did the 49ers trade Alex Smith to the Bears?

  8. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Ted Ginn had mad a couple of good catches on those bouncing punts. He is saving us a lot of yardage by not letting those go like most returners are taught.

  9. ribico says:

Wow. Looks like the Niners D is really pi$$ed that the Bears D been getting all the media attention.

  10. Crab15 says:

    Get some Aldon!

  11. BigP says:

CK has good command of this offense.

  12. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

    Great catch Mario!!

  13. MidWestNiner says:

    Great move Manningham!

  14. domingo says:

    Kap over 200 yards now!

  15. 49er42 says:

I want to see another 14-21 points.

  16. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

    Speed kills!!!

  17. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

    Crabs!!!! There’s crabs!!!!!

  18. domingo says:

    Oh Yea!

  19. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Thank God, we have a brand new QB in San Francisco!!!!

  20. BigP says:

CK to Crabs! Like the sound of that!

  21. neal says:

He is so freaking good, he can look at 3 or 4 receivers.

  22. tinsel says:

Good coaching. CK is throwin on first down. And 3 step drop quick throws.

    Playing within the system

Alex is still the starter. We just got more confident at the backup poisition

    Beautiful TD throw to crab.

  23. bayareafanatic says:

    Told you so…..

  24. The Grinch says:

In all honesty Alex would have been sacked four times by now

  25. I.P. Daily says:

Alex is not the starter. If he was playing it would be something like 10-3. Open your eyes and see the future…

  26. steelematic says:

Smith would have thrown that ball away. or took a sack

  27. msclemons67 says:

What a difference a quarterback makes.

So, does Harbaugh bring back Wally Pipp next week?

  28. Jack Hammer says:

WOW! That TD to Crabs was pretty…

  29. Crab15 says:

7 to 15 connection! Never a doubt! Lol

  30. rebelscum says:

What a fighter! The rest of the team is feeding off his enthusiasm. Love Alex as a person and of Chacter and integrity but #7 needs to be the QB of this team!

  31. HeyLittleGirl says:

    Um…well…golly…hmmmmmm…

COLIN KAEPERNICK! Starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.

You watch, Harbs will say Alex is “struggling to recover” or something like that and CK7 will start next week. Prediction: Alex will only see the field again this season if he gets hurt.

The TD pass to Crabs showed me CK7 has learned how to throw an accurate, touch pass.

  32. neal says:

    Peyton who

  33. bayareafanatic says:

Think Crabs, Davis and Moss and Williams like Kaep?

  34. woody says:

If Smith were playing he’d be 15 of 17 for 2oo yards, 2 TD’s and the niners would be up 28 nothing. CK looks good, glad he’s there. But some of you guys are getting giddy like a bunch of girls around the big new man on campus.

    • Nick says:

      Yeah right

    • steelematic says:

Thats not true.. Smith migh be 15 for 17 but 11e is 10-05 yds and the scor

      • steelematic says:

Meant to say 10- 0. Smith is accurate but not explosive. These bls in the air is great. if u havnt been watching, a big percentage of smiths yds are yards after the catch. mario has done it once tonight. this air attack is 90 CK7

  35. rebelscum says:

Alex needs to “work through something” for the rest of the year.

  36. ribico says:

Kaep looks like a pretty good pocket passer to me!

  37. 49er42 says:

I like. Alex, but Colin looks very impressive.
the offense is much more dynamic with Kap. I think it will be hard to sit him.
    Rogers!

  38. Crab15 says:

    Damn Kaep!

  39. neal says:

Call the cops DS and Hofer are jumping off the Golden Gate.

  40. tinsel says:

Lets not get carried away now. He is having a good game.

Matt Flynn, Matt Cassel,Kevin Kolb. Alex will remain the starter.

  41. undercenter says:

This is getting ugly I love it.

  42. Crab15 says:

Hofer- Kaep passed the test vs #5 ranked defense! The future looks bright!

  43. Nick says:

    Campbell soup is down!!

  44. bayareafanatic says:

    Where are the Smithers

    • ribico says:

      You mean the Niner fans?

      Present.

      • Prime Time says:

        Here

      • undercenter says:

Been here whole game. Niners looking good.

      • Crab15 says:

Prime – You are a true fan, you didn’t disappear when Kaep played well.

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

        Crabs,

He may as well have. He’s added nothing but sour grapes to the blog tonight. That’s the norm for him. He’s a sad case. He’s miserable tonight. Still flying Smith’s flag. For what???

      • Prime Time says:

Cause I have not seen enough to say otherwise 23 clown. When have you ever not brought hate to the blog?
Crabs, give Kap his due. It’s a tough decision now for JH. I personally did not see a huge difference in that Alex loses his job. I could care less. The only thing I have ever cared about was wins.

      • Crab15 says:

23j- Prime gets it, it’s fair to want more than 1 full game to be convinced. He was here, he’s got balls and I respect that. He’s a Niner fan first.

  45. I.P. Daily says:

Alex will not start next week. You can bank on that…

  46. 49er42 says:

The Bears D does not look very good.

  47. I.P. Daily says:

Yeah, the Bears have a serious defense. But Jim took the blinkers off of the offense and Colin is making passes Alex cannot make, plus he reads faster and reacts in a heartbeat.

  48. RickyP says:

You guys don’t know Harbaugh very well. If Smith is cleared he will start next week.

  49. big niner says:

    bs officiating!!

  50. fesnyc says:

it IS odd that the most vehement Smith defenders seem to vanish on days like this…are they Niner fans, or Alex fans?

    • ribico says:

Maybe they are glued to the set :)

Which is where I’m going back to. Too much typing, not enough watching.

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

We’ve always known they were Alex Smith fans. That’s why I named them Smithers! Watch at seasons end when Smith is gone. The blog will be a much more peaceful place. The lightning rod will be gone.

      • fesnyc says:

lol! they seem curiously active during other games…

but youre right…enjoy the game, Ribico!

  51. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

    Hold them to 3 defense!!!

  52. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

    Nice play Marshall!

  53. neal says:

Proves the Smithers are only Smith fans

  54. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

I’m actually happy they scored. That means our offense won’t shut it down now.

  55. big niner says:

bad officiating gave them that TD!!

  56. I.P. Daily says:

That was a gift to Las Vegas. the penalty was 101 percent bogus…

  57. big niner says:

    stupid officiating

  58. Nick says:

That was a BS call that gave Chicago a 2nd chance

  59. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Hated to see us lose Costanzo. Harbaugh didn’t like him though!

  60. 49er42 says:

    Need a TD drive.
No Grant, the game isn’t over yet.

  61. rebelscum says:

Stupid Zebras, Where is the Lions to thin out the Heard?

  62. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Damn Kap, you had em son!!!

  63. woody says:

Too bad Kap can’t throw the deep ball……….

  64. woody says:

shy again……how many times have we heard that??

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Nice logo Hofer, kinda soft though! Are those balloons or a little kite. That’s cute!

  65. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Gotta get to the marker CRABS!!

  66. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

    Great coverage!!!! Wow!!

  67. MontanaMan16/Gobble Gobble Turkey says:

No question Alex is better on the long ball!

  68. big niner says:

block in the back!!! where are the refs now?

  69. bayareafanatic says:

Kaep looked like Smith on that last play

  70. Hov says:

See ya in Jacksonville Alex lmao

  71. The Grinch says:

Wonder when I can order my Kap jersey?

  72. 49er42 says:

    Need a 3 and out.

  73. big niner says:

    let’s go D!!

  74. jgwindsor says:

    Nice…

    game almost seems anti-climatic

am sure there a lot of creamed panties in niner fan land

  75. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

    Pay Goldson!!

  76. 49er42 says:

    Perfect

  77. big niner says:

    down goes cambell!

  78. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Kap is having a ball. Campbell……. Not so much!

  79. bayareafanatic says:

    Gorgeous pass

  80. steelematic says:

Delanie be trippin… smith would have taken a sack

  81. Crab15 says:

    Catch the ball Delaney!

  82. steelematic says:

Great bullit off of 1 foot. smith cant do that

  83. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Kick the field goal! 3 touchdown lead! Delaney couldn’t catch Smiths passes, no way in hell he’s gonna catch Kaps.

  84. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Akers, come on man. Was that really good??

  85. Crab15 says:

Hofer – C’mon man, get over it. Kaep scored 30 points on 5th ranked D.

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

      Crabs,

It’s been rumored that Hofer has jumped off of the Golden Gate Bridge. He was rumored to be with BS. Thank goodness that BS had his alien powers and caught Hofers fall and flew him to safety. They were both last seen at San Francisco general hospital, with BS’s expertise, trying to invent a helmet to prevent concussions. They ae considering the installation of a pillow top mattress to get their hero back on the field and keep him concussion free! The only problem they are having in that the helmet weighs 145 pounds with the excess padding!!

  86. bayareafanatic says:

Kaep makes a great throw every drive. DELANEY dropped a Td

  87. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

I was waiting for Chilo to get Aflac. He’s very good at that!

  88. HeyLittleGirl says:

    Patrick Willis is a MAN!
