Bears-49ers matchups: Part IV – Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs vs. Vernon Davis

The 49ers play the Bears Monday night at Candlestick.  In the meantime, I’ll break down five key matchups.

LB Brian Urlacher and LB Lance Briggs vs. TE Vernon Davis

Briggs and Urlacher are two of the best linebackers in the NFL, but they are not fast enough to keep up with Vernon Davis.

The Bears play a Tampa 2 defense, so their linebackers – Briggs and Urlacher – will match up with Davis most of the time. That’s a clear advantage for the 49ers.

Also, in a Tampa 2 defense there is typically an open zone in the middle of the field in front of the safeties. Davis should be able to catch a dozen 15-yard passes in that zone if Greg Roman calls his number and the Niners quarterback throws him the ball.

But that’s unlikely happen, because Roman has not used Davis as a featured receiver all season, and Davis has been targeted just 10 times over the past three games.

Advantage: 49ers, if they want it.

My bold prediction is Davis will have 8 catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Hof, I would love to kill hours and hours of my time and research all of your Smith posts, best in the league or elite QB’s, whatever but for now I am off to my best friends house with kids and wife, for a last of the year barbeque. Later it is all good.

Really Grant? A Dozen? How many times has any single receiver caught a dozen passes against the Bears in the last 5 years? I’m guessing it’s less than 3. You really overstate the Vernon issue. There’s something there, they could definitely use him to greater effect, but when you go over the top like that it makes your valid point seem less credible.

Oh man once again it comes down to Davis to scramble me up 5 points for a victory on MNF. Once again I’m sure I won’t even get 5 points from a dude who is supposed to be the 49er’s #1 weapon.
