Bowman signs 5-year extension

The 49ers just announced they have agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension with All Pro third year inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman.

Here is general manger Trent Baalke’s written statement on the extension: “NaVorro epitomizes what we look for in a 49er. We are excited that the All Pro tandem of Willis and Bowman will be together in red and gold for years to come.”

The 49ers did not disclose the terms of the contract.

UPDATE: Janie McCauley of Associated Press just tweeted Bowman’s extension is worth $45.25 million with $25.5 million guaranteed.

Bowman will hold a press conference this afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

This was one of my previous fears that we would lose Bowman. Now, I can relax until it’s time to sign Aldon Smith! GO NINERS!!

    • Ivan says:

No need to resign Aldon he’s only on his 2nd season. And he need to stay out of trouble.

      • Mike in SF #2 says:

Per the new collective bargaining agreement and “Slotted salarys” we cannot even re-sign him for 3 more years. Plenty of time for him to mature and earn it.

  2. faith71 says:

We have the BEST quartet of LB’s in the legue since Swilling, Jackson, Mills & Johnson of the 80′s Saints! Great job front office!

    • claude balls says:

      @ faith71:

We have the BEST quartet of LB’s in the history of the league.

There, I fixed it for you.

      • jgwindsor says:

        where is grant….

      • faith71 says:

LOL. I was teetering towards objectivity until the group got a couple more season’s in but…what the hell! :-)

      • BOS49er says:

        Faith
Objectivity is an endangered species in these parts :)
But i have to agree each one is a beast in his own right and will only continue to get better.
Now sign DG and worry what to do when Aldon and Cully are up

    • AngusinCanada says:

Didn’t they call them the ‘Dome Patrol’?

Claude, you may very well be correct, this may be the best quartet of linebackers in the history of the league! 2 of the top ILB’s in the NFL, the best OLB pass rusher to come along in years, and Mr. Everything in Brooks.
This is a good news story, nice to discuss this instead of divisive QB controversy and devastating injuries.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

I love these guys, but besides those Saints (wasn’t Fangio their Coach?), G-Men LT, Carl Banks, Dan Lloyd & Harry Carson were purty good too. The Patriots fielded some good foursomes also. But our Fire Team is the fastest.

      • Bray says:

Brotha- Gary Reasons… I don’t remember Dan Lloyd?
        LT-#56
        HC-#53
        CB-#58
        GR-#55

PW and NB are WAY better than Carson and Reasons ever were. Not a bad 4some at all though.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        @ Bray
I’m off by a season or two from your 4. Dan was, if I remember right, a big plugger whose career was cut short by cancer. Maybe Rocket or Rib can dial me in; or maybe I just got it wrong. Carson was a big tough dude, but our guys are lightning. Brooks is good in coverage, Banks didn’t do much of that.

      • Bray says:

Brotha- Fangio was the DC for those good 80′ Saints teams, with Bobby Hebert at QB.

    This is very good news!!

  4. MontanaMan16 says:

This is great news! I hope they sign Goldson too! I watch that hit on Early Doucett at least 3 times a day. It’s better than caffeine!

    • dangle says:

You got that right. I said right when that hit happened that he just earned himself the next contract he gets. ooooh boy! You can’t watch that hit without wincing or shouting.

    • Neanderthal Offense says:

That’s the MontanaMan I know and love!!!

    • EB Niner says:

That was crazy damage and he does it each week…look what he did to Colston this past weekend!

I can’t imagine we’ll be able to sign him to a multi-year extension. They will likely have to franchise him again at 7.5mil or whatever the percentage step up is supposed to be to keep him.

Meanwhile, they will have to bring up some other prospect(s)

  5. 49er42 says:

    Excellent news

  6. Mike in SF #2 says:

    Two thoughts:
    1. All four 49ers linebackers are now signed through at least 2015. That is just filthy!
    2. To sign Bowman for less than Willis, a deal signed in 2010, is remarkable for the team. Shows Bowman wasn’t greedy and was ok being the “Second highest paid LB on 49ers”. No doubt he could have exceed Willis’ deal on open market.

    • Razoreater says:

I tip my hat to Mr. Bowman for not needing his ego massaged. Brilliant!

      • Mike in SF #2 says:

Totally agree. Given Willis’ deal was signed in 2010, Bowman absolutely should have been given a “bigger” contract. Baalke and Paraag deserve a ton of credit.

      • dangle says:

Those two guys have a great relationship as well, and they could go down as the best ILB duo in history.

      • BOS49er says:

If u read Bo’s comments about this being a physical league where people get hurt all the time. I think that financial security meant more to him than a few extra milions. Besides he will still be able to get another contract when he’s 29. and I have to believe that playing alongside p willy on a perenial contender made the decision to “settle” for 25 mil guaranteed a bit easier :)

Props to the front office for jumping on this quickly and getting the best value for a guy who still had 1.5 years left on his rookie deal

  7. old coach says:

I think this signing was made possible by the play of CK it made smith expendable also i do’nt see the 9ers resigning Sopoaga, Jacobs and Leonard Davis it will give us the Cap room

  8. Neal says:

This is horrible news, giving Bowman $25 million guarantee, how the hell are they going to afford to pay that $7.5 million due to Alex Smith next April. Baalke needs to be fired!!

  9. Neal says:

I just saw AS at Hallmark store, he is buying a break up card and will be dropping it off at Harbaugh office, he had tears in his eyes,

  10. 5253 says:

Great to have the best linebacking corps in the NFL secured. I’m also happy I don’t have to change my handle to just “52″. Now let’s get Goldy signed long term.

  11. Foamingatdamouth says:

They just need to sign Goldson & they’ll be contenders for the next 5 years.

  12. DS94everXev says:

    This is GREAT NEWS!

They have Bowman signed who is their most important FA in the wings. That tandem is the best in the NFL.

  13. freddie p soft says:

Actually best foursome was the steelers greg lloyd larry kirkland, chad brown and kevin greene.

    • BOS49er says:

      Freddy P
Pass rushers yes. But kirkland was a 280 lb midlle backer who couldnt run and neither of the other guys could cover all they did was rush the passer. Neither one of those guys would be able to catch/tackle Sproles in the open field a la Willis and Bowman
