Cosell says Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks are “the most athletic outside linebacker duo in the NFL.”

Here’s what Greg Cosell said on the Murph and Mac Show Thursday morning about the 49ers outside linebackers – Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks.

COSELL: “I’ve got to tell you, I was talking to my guys about this here at NFL Films – I think with [Aldon] Smith and [Ahmad] Brooks, [the 49ers] have the most athletic outside linebacker duo in a Base 3-4 in the NFL.

“And of course, both those guys stay in on the sub package as well. Those guys are just remarkably athletic. Brooks does not get the national attention he deserves because of other players on that defense, but he is a really good player.”

Here’s a question for the class: Where does Brooks rank on the list of the 49ers most valuable defensive players this season?

    I’d rank him up high, similar to what Navarro Bowman did last year. Ahmad’s pass rush ability has been outstanding and is key on 3rd down situations when the opposing offense has only a 1-2 WR set and we’re not committed to a heavy DB package.

    Brooks to me has been the guy to get that consistent push in the pocket that keeps qb’s from having a place to escape on the right side of the line. In the last two years the only times that I, as a fan , gave been frustrated by him are those games where he gets so eager to rush the passer he gets those neutral zone infractions. This year to me, I’d put him behind only goldson Wilis , Justin, and bowman, and that’s only because thosehree consistently make plays behind the line, short of the first down marker, and deep to prevent touchdowns.

    I’d put him tied for 5th with Goldson behind J. Smith, A. Smith, Willis and Bowman (in no particular order). Steady, reliable and makes plays.

    How dare Cosell call Brooks and Aldon the most athletic pair of outside backers in the league?!? This just proves how biased Cosell is against the 49ers.

    On a “most valuable” scale I’d rate 49er outside linebackers Brooks and Aldon Smith near the top.

    Their not the most productive at their defensive positions. Willis, Bowman, Justin and some others are more productive at this point in their careers… but the NFL is now a pass heavy league, so the OLB postion has more value.
