It looks like Colin Kaepernick is going to start against the Saints in spite of the fact that Alex Smith is having a very good season and only went out because of an injury.
Do you feel sorry for Smith, yes or no? Why?
It looks like Colin Kaepernick is going to start against the Saints in spite of the fact that Alex Smith is having a very good season and only went out because of an injury.
Do you feel sorry for Smith, yes or no? Why?
Do I feel sorry for him, no. He’s an NFL QB making millions of dollars a year. I don think it’s crappy when a guy, any guy, loses his job to an injury. Especially Smith, who statistically is having a pretty good year, and is part of a winning team. You’ll never make me think differently in that I think a guy should lose his job for his on field performance, not just because he missed 1 game!
Jim Harbaugh’s contact information is 327 Stockbridge Ave Atherton, CA 94027-6442
Grant, delete this please. Not cool dude, doesn’t matter if its true or not.
He’s being replaced by a backup because of an injury. Nobody said who the qb is gonna be after this week. Why feel sorry for him?
Why should someone feel sorry for him? He plays a game. That is his vocation. Most of us would love to be in his position. He makes millions of dollars. You could say he isn’t as lucky as CK. Typically poor teams drafting QBs in the first round are bad for a reason. Usually the problem is the ownership, FO, HC, lack of talent, etc. AS has dealt with all of that but he wasn’t the first to do so. “Feel sorry”? No!
Feel bad for?
Yes. He’s a human being who has persevered through a lot of really tough circumstances. “Carr Carr Carr.” The worst coach ever, berating him. The second worst coach ever, questioning his manhood. The Peyton chase.
No. He’s massively rich and gets to play a game for a living. He got to feel true exaltation following Vernon Post, has had the opportunity to play for the best coach in the NFL, and is now set up to continue playing elsewhere if the Niners release him.
On balance, I think he’s in a fine place, but it’s gotta hurt.
Who is this double poster?
Anyone seen DS lately?
No.
Say what, Hofer? Explain yourself!
Why did you switch back Coffee?
You said you had several handles here after I stated you are a double poster. Hmm.
Hofe
I say jump. You say how high!
What a delight!
I believe DS had one post the day after the Bears game. She did the same thing when the Niners were evaulating Peyton Manning.
N.O.
I can see it is easy to humor yourself. Congratulations!
Hofe! All in good humor, my dude! Keep it positive jah …
I feel sorry for DS’ shrink. That shrink might need therapy by now :)
Nick, it is time for DS to grow up and face reality. Thank goodness that Harbaugh saw past win and losses and knew he needed to put in CK as AS replacement. I had said this will happen sooner then later, and it did, ofcourse I was mock by the Smithers, we are not out of the woods yet, because AS is one injury away from starting again.
I have a important question, has the Smithers cult group dissolve and are facing chapter 13.
No I feel sorry for all the people on here that are getting thier hopes up that he won’t be back.
So far it is just for this game, if he does lose his starting job to Kap he will still be only 1 hit or a few turnovers away.
He has been here before, so have the folks wishing for his demise.
GO NINERS
+1
Ofcourse not. Jim Harbaugh saved his career,I would consider him lucky, he will certainly be employed in the NFL for another 5 years. He is set for life, the money he has made out ways his performance on the field. I feel sorry for vets who lose their limbs fighting for Country, and can’t find a job and are homeless and eating at soup kitchens but not Alex Smith.
Exactly, sir, and you raise a good point — “he will certainly be employed in the NFL for another 5 years.” And if he is smart, it will be as a backup. What I am referring to is that such players collect a great paycheck and avoid repeated concussions.
I do feel bad because the way he persevered was quite admiring only to lose his job because of an injury. But if your a coach and if you truly feel somebody is better at the position don’t you owe it to the rest of players on the team to play what you feel is the best option. I understand that Alex really doesn’t deserve this to happen to him after the way he played, but what about the rest of the team. I’m not saying Kap is better or Alex is better, but as a coach I understand why someone could make a change.
Nope. He has millions of reasons for me not to feel sorry for him.
Bitter? LOL
Shadow? LoL
Romer? LOL
Lol
Absolutely!!!
Ummm, one little thing….
So we are all %100 this is going down, right? The team has made the announcement, or what?
So what happens if it’s #11 who starts on Sunday? Who do we feel sorry for then? Grant?
It would be a totally Harbaugh move to start Alex after “evaluating” Kaepernick.
When it comes to the media, this staff is all about the play action.
Harbaugh be trolling for the lulz?
I could buy that. :)
Jordan
Nah, even if Smith starts for the Niners for the next 10 years, this is the closest Jordan has ever been to being anywhere close to correct.
If Smith starts for my team on Sundsy against the Saints, I’m going to jail because after the his first offensive play, I’m jumping out of the stands with a tube sock full of quarters and concuss him again! ( just kidding! ) Smithers, please don’t take it personal!!
LoL, Jordan. You are crazy, but make me laugh.
It wouldn’t shock me in the least bit. This guy has incriminating photos of someone in the front office. I’m convinced of this. Lol
Harbaugh will have AS be the starter for the first series with New Orleans, you know how he always sucked in the first series, nickname 3 and out. Then CK will come in and we blow out the aints 35 -17.
Jack,
Sure, Jordan makes you laugh, but you’re laughing at him, right?
Ex,
You need a life bro. You take this blog waaaay too seriously!
Jordan,
I need a life? Now you really are being funny!
yes, even tho he’s getting paid millions in a job which is all about what youre going to do for me next
BUT, this isnt necessarily over. Kaep had a great start. if he doesnt continue to play better than Alex can play, and/or show that such consistently high play is right around the corner, we will be back to Alex soon.
for me, and i think especially Harbaugh, this is about who can deliver a title, given all the other talent on the team.
Its time we moved on. Any reports on the health of the 49er secondary?
I feel sorry for Chilo Rachal. There is a moment when all athletes have to evaluate themselves brutally and decide what is the next best move for them. He wanted to keep the dream alive but couldn’t accept the demotion. In his case, it wasn’t an injury that saw him get demoted but a horrific performance on MNF. He decided to quit and ask for his release. Balmer did it, Glen Coffee did it and others have as well. You’d like to go out on top, or gracefully or just fade out of sight when no team picks you up when you are a free agent. But this kind of an exit will be a lasting one full of second thoughts. I wish him well as he is a family man and a human being that never did me any wrong. Allowing our QB to get sacked isn’t enough for me to wish him ill. And I can’t feel sorry for Alex as it is far from over for him.
WE Took Chilo Rachal before Desean Jackson!
David – Hard to believe we passed on Desean Jackson for Chilo 2nd round 2008.
1st round pick (Kentwan Balmer) was a complete bust too! Where the hell is Balmer now? I know he was injured then was traded? But I lost track of him.
We also passed on Ray Rice and Matt Forte in 2nd round in 2008 but Gore was looking good his first 3 years (2005-2007).
The dancing bear danced his way out of the league earlier this year when he packed up and left the Redskins camp without telling anybody.
Another wasted pick from the lush.
Yes because he went through more crap than any QB I’ve ever seen and no because he makes millions plus it’s the nature of the game.
More crap than any QB you’ve seen? You haven’t been around very long…
Andre Ware
Chris Chandler
Akili Smith
David Carr
Joey Harrington
There is a very long list of guys who suffered through horrible coaching, upset fans, and unrealistic expectations. Alex Smith is in a long line of guys who didn’t land in the best situation and were not blessed with the level of talent to overcome those obstacles.
Houston,
Good list. I would add Jim Plunkett to the list with one caveat: He came all the way back from the trash heap to win a Super Bowl.
I’m not sure if people knew that his father was blind. After a successful career at Stanford, he was drafted by the Patriots and their coach had Plunkett run the option where he was injured. He languished on the bench got traded to the 49ers at a time when they had worse coaches than Nolan and Singletary.
After leaving the miserable 49ers he caught on when the raiders where he eventually became the starter and a SB winner.
I always thought that Plunkett odyssey would make for a great movie. It’s true ‘Rocky’ type script.
AES,
Correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t both Plunkett’s parents blind? I remember seeing an interview with Plunkett said neither parent ever saw him play.
@AES…
I would have to amend your post, in that I seriously doubt you could lump Monte Clark in with the Mikes (Nolan and Singletary)….actually, when Jim Plunkett came to the 49er’s, he showed signs of resurrecting his career. Unfortunately, JP’s talents were fully realized by the Slimy and Bleak, and not the 49er’s..
Unrealistic expectations yes, six different OCs no. At least to my recollection Houston.
No. He never got pissed on, like John Brodie.
No, really. I mean it. One time someone peed on him as he was heading into the tunnel at Kezar.
Ah, the Good Old Days.
That is crazy Grumpy, John Brodie was before my time but that is insane.
What’s the saying? “If you remember the Sixties, you obviously weren’t there?”
Ahh….how about when fans threw beer bottles at him when he was walking to the tunnel @ Kezar. Thats the reason for the chain link fencing that enclosed the track from the tunnel to the field..
Amen to the good ole days, Grumpy..
Yeah. Brodie always used to tell the new guys on the team, “NEVER take your helmet off until you’re in the locker room.”
A few years alter some idjit actually DID nail a referee on the noggin at Candlestick.
Fans behaving badly due to alcohol is not necessarily a new phenomenon.
Yeah I do feel sorry for the guy. He has tried to be the best for us fans. He just don’t have the tools that kap has. I just hope he helps the kid be all he can be. Kap is a that good and AS knows how good this kid is. And the team knows it to. That’s why they have called on kap to start. The niners have a gem with this kid. And I think he will be the next great QB. To make this move right now is crazy. Only if u have something really spechel do u make this move. So every one be happy that we picked him and not some other team.
Feel sorry for him? Absolutely not. Why would anyone feel sorry for him?
NEVER count out Alex Smith. Have you followed his career? He can handle adversity better than anyone. This is hardly the end of #11. His mental toughness alone will keep him relevant in this league for years to come, whether it’s here or elsewhere.
It’s looking more and more like elsewhere.

The more important question is: does Alex Smith feel sorry for me?
Football is supposed to be entertainment; a break from the day to day drudgery of work, bills, report cards and more bills. Football is not supposed to be yet another source of aggravation.
For the last 7 years I have not been entertained. I have been aggravated by a clogged toilet offense led by a rolling ball of excuses. Swing passes thrown 10 yards over Gore’s head. Wide open receivers ignored. An abysmal lack of pocket presence. Even at his very best Smith has “improved” from aggravating to boring.
If an actor consistently stunk I would stop watching his movies. If a singer sounds like a dying cat being dragged over a bed of hot coals then I won’t buy his albums. But if the QB of the 49ers stinks then I have no choice but to watch him because being a 49ers fan has been ingrained into my DNA.
Nope, I don’t feel sorry for Alex Smith. He’s been given $45 million dollars to make me spend every Sunday cursing at the TV for the past 7 years. I wish I could be paid that well to do my job so poorly.
“For the last 7 years I have not been entertained.”
Things happen for a reason. At least MN amd MS are long gone! LOL
That was funny.
That’s a good point Hofer. Singletary being fired was a good thing.
Great funny post MSC,
Grant,
Why do you think AS is having a very season? He has played 4 crummy to below average games, he still was not hitting wide open receivers, he still plays poorly in third down and red zone play.
After reading this, go back to drama! LOL
Hofer,
I was leaving you alone and now this . LMAO sorry can’t keep a straight face.
@Msclemons
“Nope, I don’t feel sorry for Alex Smith. He’s been given $45 million dollars to make me spend every Sunday cursing at the TV for the past 7 years. I wish I could be paid that well to do my job so poorly.”
Thats kinda funny cuz I know a bunch of Charger fans who curse at the tv every week at Norv Turner when we all know darn well Rivers is a POS. Funny how different fans look at things differently like that.
Exactly, we we’re not entertained. In 7 1/2 years of his tenure, he never played a solid 4 quarters like Kaep did on MNF. NO playoff, buffalo & az games included. He never had the fan giddy by making repeated wow throws. He never appeared to be a man among boys, he merely struggled to belong. By virtue of not complaining & working hard, he’s earned the right to have a long career in the NFL as a stop gap starter & back up. However, it’s on Kaep now to take the team and fan base on a thrilling ride to SB glory.
yes. he’s beautiful and he’s hurting. We’ve all been through a lot together — he gave his all.
@msc:
“Why did you switch back Coffee?”
Hadn’t noticed that it reset to the old one after clearing my browser history and cookies, wasn’t intentional.
I like both, so no difference to me. Missed your cool avatar though.
Coffee, you are Neanderthal Offense?
No, Hofe … I don’t remember my old handles. They’re all just as random N.O., but I’m most definitely not Alec Baldwin.
Hof if that was true then after yesterdays exchange I’d have to change my name to Sybil the masochistic grammar nazi.
Alec
Well said. Touché
Fair weather fans switch teams when times are tough.
I’ve stuck with the 49ers even though they’ve been a train wreck for most of the past decade. Unlike you, I didn’t start rooting for the team when they made the biggest mistake in franchise history and drafted Alex Smith.
dammit Grant, don’t delete posts when I’m in mid-reply.
Prime’s back!!! And so soon! Lets be friends!
Happy Thanksgiving Leftovers!
Neanderthal Offense,
That would be very nice to be his friend because he does not have any. You can claim it on your taxes as a charity case.
The biggest mistake was they kept him for 8 years.
Thankgoodness we won’t have him for 9 years Lol.
msc…
You got a short memory? I have to disagree with the biggest mistake reference…in all honesty, do you consider Alex a bigger mistake than Giovanni Carmazzi (taken before Tom Brady), Jim Druckenmiller, Israel Ifeani, Dana Hall…c’mon, the list of failed 1st round draft choices of the 49er’s goes on…I’d say that Alex isn’t the QB that Mike Nolan thought he’d be when he drafted him, but, clearly not the biggest mistake in franchise history.
@55Niner I don’t necessarily agree with the “biggest mistake” part either. That’s a quote from Jerry Rice.
You have dumb ass Nolan who wanted AS because he was a nice guy, instead of a NFL ready quarterback like Rodgers. Even fans and columnists knew picking Rodgers was the better pick. I hope the Niners never ever have a defensive coordinator be the head coack, yes Seifert won two Super Bowls but Steve Young has said he knows jack about offense.
Grant, First I would like to wish you and your family a healthy and happy thanks giving. I do not feel sorry for Alex since he has not lost his job official ! Even if it was we still do not know how Ck is going to perform down the line! In addition Alex, is very lucky to have a great system and millions of dollars in his pocket! GO NINERS
I admire Alex Smith’s character, his toughness in the face of adversity, and his progress as a quarterback. I’ve also admired Steve Young’s character.
I find this particular question insulting in the way both you and Lowell have made a practice of finding ways to demean Alex Smith in your blogs.
If Alex Smith gets beat out by Kaepernick, then more power to both of them. Kaepernick is more fun to watch.
There came a time when Montana was beaten out by Young. Do you feel sorry for Montana?
Frankie Albert, Y. A. Tittle, John Brodie, Jeff Garcia, and many others all lost their jobs either with the 49ers or later on with other teams. I don’t recall anyone asking such a dumb question about any of them.
In the case of Montana and Young, they both had shortened carries due to injury, but they also had the backing of a strong organization. If Alex Smith has his 49er carrier shortened by greater talent instead of having it shortened by the crappy first seven years, then I feel like he proved himself to the best of his natural ability.
Enjoy New Orleans. I would enjoy being there this week end too.
Whether we feel sorry for Alex Smith or not is irrelevant, and either way, it’s just a projection of how we deal with our own adversity. I’m very certain that Alex Smith doesn’t feel sorry for himself. He’s probabably pissed, but he’s going to take it on the chin and focus on his next playing oppoetunity, whether it’s with the Niners (I hope not) this season or another franchise next year. #7 is after #6!
I’m sure Singletary is doing fine somewhere, and Nolan has landed on his feet in Atlanta.
Alex Smith is a tremendous student of the game, with off and on field intelligence. Like someone else mentioned, I would not count him out just yet. I don’t feel sorry for him. Actually I feel a great deal of pride in the fact that he fought his way back to relevence.
Both Mike and Mike are well off, although they both sucked at their jobs.
Do you think AS feel’s sorry for the fans. ahahahah
No I don’t. He has a job most men dream of having for one Sunday and millions to boot. He has a great family, health, and friends.
I do feel sorry for the Smithers like onelame and ds. What are they going to do now? Their days are done. They have NO voice. They have nothing to do everyday now. Where is ds btw? Lol who am I kidding I pegged bs from day 1. A smith fan only. Bet its excuse will be the holiday as to the reason it’s been missing. Lol and some of you bought its crap for 2 years now. Bs ain’t no fan. Neither is onelame.
It obvious that none of the Smithers except perhaps Hofer, are only AS fans. Who cares, we will win Super bowls under Harbaugh and company.
Both quartebacks will play on Sunday. If you want to call one of them the starter, then so be it. We like to call them packages and it just depends on what offensive package we start with. Just like our recievers. We have no starters here!
Ya, it was my best JH impression from a laptop!
Grant is it possible to switch to a blog site that requires signing up before being allowed to post? Should have more success keeping those out that you’ve banned.

You are one mean and vicious SOB! You can be my wingman any time!
thanks Neanderthal Offense,
That is the 3rd best compliment, I got today, it will be a honor to be your wingman.
Joe…he could elevatte his play in the postseason. Steve could not.
Joe…he could elevate his play in the postseason. Steve could not.
Sorry…I was attempting to reply to the question about Joe and Steve.
Hallelujah!
That’s the truth. What ever other cr*p dribbles out of your mouth, that comment will always resonate with the real fans. Nice job!
That’s why the Niners need CK. He has the Cool. http://www.mercurynews.com/49ers/ci_22049750/colin-kaepernick-legend-49ers-quarterback-grows

Jack,
It sure looks that way. I’m really looking forward to tomorrow’s game. If CK7 has another great game………..
Jack, soon to be the next Oliver Stone movie at a theatre near you, lol.
NO,
It looks like you’re arguing with an imaginary friend.
ExG
It was Prime Time. Grant banned him because he couldn’t stop himself from insulting everybody in every post, using explicit language and the like …
I know, it just looked funny.
Not a jab at you, BTW.
Turlock is a strip mall built upon a heap of cow manure. It’s one redeeming quality is the Dust Bowl Brewery. Love that place.
Most of America is a strip mall built upon a heaping mound of manure!
Oh yea that makes so much sense, so Trent Dilfer is better then Alex Smith because he won more games and won a super bowl, what a simpleton.
I do feel a little bad for Alex. Smith is like the girl who’s in love but the guy only calls late at night after the bar closes. Harbaugh got Smith to sign last year after the lockout. Then Harbaugh met Peyton at the bar but couldn’t close the deal so he made the late night call to Smith to get him through the rejection. Now that Harbaugh seems to fancy CK more than Alex, Smith will be waiting for the call on the sidelines. It’s hard not to feel a little bad when someone is made to look so pitiful.
Dude, Smith was injured….or did you miss that part? Let’s try and keep up. When a player gets hurt, he has a back up you see. The back up trys his best to keep the train rolling until the starter is cleared to play. That hasn’t happened yet.
When you use the word “seems”, it tells me you’re more pitiful than Alex and your story!
I guess the holiday spirit hasn’t hit you yet. You seem awfully angry when there’s so much to be thankful for. Or is it that your lashing out about something else? Whatever it is there are words that will help you – This too shall pass.
At any rate, Alex was injured. He is set to be cleared to play this week. It looks like even though he will be cleared to play, he will not be the starter. Therefore, he will be the backup even though he’s healthy. See how that works. He’s healthy – he isn’t starting – he’s now the backup – which means he lost his job. So Harbaugh found someone he likes better.
Houston,
Reread your comment that led to MM16/GGT’s response. Where in that little gem can we find the “holiday spirit”? Talk about angry, you’re one of the angriest people on this blog.
Do you listen to Rush Limbaugh?
@exg, I still have no idea what I said to evoke such an angry response. I said I feel a little sorry for Alex since he lost his job after doing everything asked of him. How is that angry on my part?
And what in the world does Rush Limbaugh have to do with anything? I have never listened to Rush Limbaugh. I thought the whole ditto head thing was stupid and a big turnoff so I have never listened to him. That’s just a bizarre thing to bring up on your part. What does Rush Limbaugh have to do with anything? You’r wacky man.
Houston,
Do you really expect anyone to believe that you feel sorry for Smith? You’re just taking another opportunity to paint him as weak, needy and desperate, simple as that.
I can understand why the RL question seemed a bit random. I was profiling you with that question.
Houston, that just ain’t right. Funny as hell though.
Who dat???

23J – Could you take this guy?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6lJB7-iewo
Crabs,
My Alex Smith rant after that Giant game last yer would make his rant seem like an episode of barney! I was so pissed, I went outside and just screamed in the street. You don’t know how overoyed I am that JH decided that he wasn’t going to allow Smith to get him fired!!!
nope….39 million signing bonus…
It is not a question of felling sorry for him. At 7-2-1 and statistically you are within the top 5, you just shake your head at it. It is completely irrelevant how much he makes. Alex just a bad deal from the day they drafted him – horrible coaching, Swiss cheese for an offensive line, no talent to throw to and no creative game plans.
I fully expect Kaepernik to be a great to elite QB. Let us not forget that the Bears defense does not use a lot of exotic blitzes and disguised schemes. New Orleans has no defense so Kaepernik will do well on Sunday. Let’s see how well he does against Seattle and other elite defenses.
Quarterback rating top five, statistically average as usual. Harbaugh sees it too. That’s why the switch was made.
So many good posts… I’ll try and not be too repetitive;
I have been a part of the faithful for my entire adult life. My family held season tickets from 1950 until my dad got too old and infirm to make the games just a few years back. We’ve been there through the bad years, the glory years, and the horrible years. We’ve cheered for the heroes, the bums, and everything in between- as long as they wore the scarlet and gold, we stuck with them. Even when things were bad, there was always next Sunday or next season. Then Harbaugh came, and we began to believe again. Just one or two more “ingredients to the soup” as Steve Young used to say, and we are ready to hold up the trophy again.
Maybe Colin K. is the missing ingredient, and next season is now. I don’t know.
I’ve always liked Alex Smith as a person. He seems like a great guy. Never whines. Shows great sportsmanship. But here’s why I won’t feel bad for him if he should lose his spot as our starter:
1. He is very wealthy, and if he’s planned carefully, should not have to worry about money for the rest of his life. This should also be true for any children he may have. What percentage of the population can make that claim?
2. He is a very intelligent man. He knew when he chose to make professional sports his vocation that fame and success could be his one day and gone the next. Like musicians and actors, he is in the entertainment business; what the fans remember is your latest work. And even if you’re hot today, the next big thing is usually waiting just in the wings. Or on the sideline.
3. He has talents, and thus should have options to continue playing elsewhere if it should come to that. Whatever happens though, he has already attained a great deal more success than most people ever do. For one as young as he, he has much to be proud of, and much more to be grateful for.
On the day after Thanksgiving, I can think of many people in our country more deserving of our sympathy than this healthy, rich, and relatively accomplished young man.
FF,
Well said.
I don’t feel sorry for Alex, I only feel shame and hate for him. Alex had to know how good Kaepernick was, yet all he did was show how selfish he could be. Alex, without the coaches even asking should of benched himself knowing how much more talented Colin was than himself all along. I think the coaches were the ones that must of felt sorry for Alex or why else would of they let Kaep languish on the bench so long over a quarterback with so many obvious deficiencies? I would say there are probably only really four elite QB’s in the NFL right now. Brady, Rodgers, Brees, and Kaepernick. Why didn’t we start him last year after Smith stunk it up for yet another season. He would of roasted the Giants D in the championship game, I mean Crabtree was open nearly every play. All he had to do was throw it up there and let Michael do the rest. It would of been fun to see Tom Brady and the cocky Patriots get torched. After that embarrassing loss I bet super-model Gisele would of left Brady for Kaep. You know how flaky those Hollywood romances are anyway? Of course CK is way too good for that boney chicken but of her’s anyway, plus have you noticed how huge her nose is? Ugly!
With the way Kaep played Sunday, I just wonder if we have been keeping him a secret, just like we have Randy Moss and Brandon Jacobs. I wonder how many yards he will light up the Saints horrid D-Backs for?…my guess to the tune of 450 yards and 5 touchdowns. Maybe he will have more yardage rushing than Frank Gore. In fact, why even put Frank back there. O’ Ya, we need him to block..not that Kaep really needs it with the speed he possess. I wonder who’s faster? Teddy Ginn or CK? Wouldn’t that be great to see them race each other. Myself, personally I would rather like to see Colin race a horse, just like they use to on that “Battle of the Superstars” or whatever it was called. Now that was some good TV. I bet the horse might give Colin a good run for a while but in the end Colin would probably pull away. Another question, how was this guy drafted as low as the second round. After watching him Sunday…I think he could be as good or better than Joe Montana or Steve Young ever was…in fact he has none of their weaknesses and beats any of their strengths. I was worried if the 49ers would even make it to the Superbowl this year, but now I know that no longer is in doubt. The only doubt now is how many we will win in a row? Our defense must be loving life with Alex gone because even if they have even a sub-par game…no worries, Kaepernick can easily put up 40 or more points on anyone. To think, how fun it will be to watch Crabtree and Vernon free of Alex’s 5 yard dump-off that were never accurate to be caught in stride. Those “shackles” are off now, the play-book is wide open and Roman can finally open up the playbook to all those deep go-routes he’s be acking to throw at other teams. Now Vernon, Crabs and Manningham will routinely be having those multiple TD games and posting over one-hundred on a weekly basis. Fianally it will be fun watching the 49ers again and not having to be bored to death watching Alex, even if we happened to win. The Niners passing game will no longer be the laughing stock of the league. When CK is inducted into the Hall of Fame here if a few years, I wonder if he’ll ask Harbaugh to be his inductee? I bet he mentions how the incredible game he had against the Bears defense that no one really thought could be scored on until then started him on the path for all the MVP awards he received over the years. If he’s humble enough, he might mention his teammates and coaches and hopefully gives them some credit too.
No, it’s not Alex I feel sorry for…it’s Colin. Let the Hype begin, because it usually just gets louder and is almost always impossible to live up to. Just ask Alex Smith. You will probably be able to reach him in Cleveland.
DS.
I don’t think that was DS.
JC has a point, which is CK7 has played one game, against a great defense that had a game plan that matched up poorly with the 49ers’ game plan. Yes, CK7 played phenomenally well, but it was one game. A lot of people here have been complaining about Smith’s lack of consistency. Well, shouldn’t we wait to see what CK7 can do, in that regard before anointing him the next coming?
Don’t misunderstand, I love what CK7 brings to the table, and look forward to him being ready to take the reigns. If JH and GR decide that he’s ready now, then that’s great, but all we know right now is that it looks like CK7 is starting on Sunday. It could be JH wants to give AS one more week to heal, it could be he really is considering using two QB’s, and it certainly, maybe most likely, is that he actually is making at permanent switch.
In any case, instead of pretending to know what’s going to happen, maybe it’s wiser to sit back and enjoy the ride.
Except Grant, he’d be out of a job if he did that.
This part is ridiculous(actually it’s stupidity) — and ruins your credibility.
“I don’t feel sorry for Alex, I only feel shame and hate for him. Alex had to know how good Kaepernick was, yet all he did was show how selfish he could be. Alex, without the coaches even asking should of benched himself knowing how much more talented Colin was than himself all along. ”
Alex is a pro athlete — getting replaced is part of the game. No need to feel sorry for him. We have a reason to be excited about Kap but he isn’t the second coming. Yet.
Can’tBreakPar,
If you read further down into the post, you get the idea the guy was being sarcastic. He was saying that all the love CK is getting might be a bit premature. I hope not, but it is possible.
Well played, Jeff ;)
Paragraphs are your friend. But extra-points scored if the formatting was intrinsic to your caricature.
Well done Jeff! I almost didn’t read it because of the 1st sentence….but I’m glad I did. You made me chuckle.
The reference to Giselle as a “bony chicken” damn near caused me to choke to death on my coffee.
Now THAT was awesome.
Well played, Sir. Well played.
Jeff I’d like to introduce you to someone, his name is paragraph and I think you two should get acquainted. When you’ve fought off glasses as long as I have those monolith type posts are brutal on the eyes.
;)
Coffee,
He doesn’t have to do a thing. Simply outstanding!
Not a commentary on the subject matter simply need the non braille version.
Personally I think this has been badly handled by JH if true…..
To lose your starting job whilst the 5th ranked passer in the NFL to an injury must be a little hard to take especially for a man who has done everything asked of him by his coach.
Harbaugh comes across as dishonest and it’s not the first time. Houston 9ers analogy is a very good one.
On the flip side, no one is bigger than the team so lets hope CK lives up to the promise, but I really hope this doesn’t come back to bite Harbaugh on the ass.
“Whilst”
Not too often that word is used in American English! Curious …
While and whilst are interchangeable with the latter simply being the older version. It should say “To lose your starting job whilst also(or being) the 5th ranked passer in the NFL to an injury must be a little hard…”
The “rule” is to replace it with while and see if it still makes sense. “To lose your starting job while the 5th ranked passer in the NFL to an injury must be a little hard…” Doesn’t sound right without the word also or being.
If you look at his posting name, it’s good odds “American” English is not his language.
Simply noting that there is another poster on here who uses “Whilst”
I’m Welsh, live in Thailand.
Used to come to California for the football season just to go to Niners games. Been to about 40.
I’m Welsh too!
A Welshman living in Thailand? This is a story I want to hear.
NO…. Where from?
Not much of a story, lived here on and off since 1991. Left in 2003 for what I thought was the last time but made a return in 2005 after an offer I could not refuse that tripled what I was earning in London at the time. Been here since and will stay until my position gets nationalised. After that we’ll see where I end up.
Coming to SF for a holiday in April, sadly out of season……
Bangkok,
You may be closer to the truth than many are willing to admit.
I took a little flak for calling Harbaugh a liar when he vehemently denied his pursuit of P.Manning.
Now, about 5 months later we are starting to see Harbaugh’ laxed obligation/loyalty to AS.
Harbaugh may still go with AS tomorrow, but his media rope-a-dope game has to weigh on AS’ mind.
The need to win at any cost will be Harbaugh’ legacy after he’s done as a coach. Loyalty will only go as far as onfield production.
We may be witnessing that right now.
Maybe Harbaugh is just playing with the media, wouldn’t put it past him. He has talked about the value of any advantage it may bring however small.
I guess we’ll see tomorrow (for me) but if it is at it’s being discussed I cannot help but think it is an issue that will not sit well with some of the players.
I love the way Harbaugh has handled the media and the Saints this week. Based on the Bears game, it appears that Smith and Kaep play the QB position quite differently. If Kaep can play consistently the way he did vs Chi, I would greatly prefer watching his style. However, Smith has been quite successful since Harbaugh came along.
The uncertainly about which style they will face has to have influenced the Saints’ prep for SF. It may not help us, but since repetition is the essence of NFL player prep, there might just be a critical play or two where there is a difference as result of the extra prep Harbaugh has forced NO to go into.
Good job, Coach.
Feel bad for him as a person. He seems like a great person from what I’ve read.
I don’t feel bad for him as a player. The team comes first and winning is what matters, not feelings.
Exactly
Walsh was the same as JH in that regard. He was ruthless when it came to moving players out. He did it to Craig, Lott, and even Montana. It’s far better to move a player out when they have a little bit left in the tank, than to give them one more contract out of sentimentality.
Ex,
I hear what you are saying but this would be more in line with SDeBerg. Still young and depending on how it plays out here, could help another team next year if CK is indeed the starter after that one game body of work.
Hofer,
Yes, it’s not a foregone conclusion that CK is taking over, now or next year, but it sure does look like it.
I agree that Smith could help a number of teams at QB.
Selfishly, I would like Smith to stay here, should CK end up being the starting QB. I think Smith would make a great back up. Before some of you guys jump on that like a dog on a bone, no, I don’t mean to say Smith is only suited to being a back up. I’m saying any team in the league would be lucky to have him as their back up QB.
You are right on ex. Smith is perfectly suited to be a backup here. Smart team oriented guy, knows the offense. They would be smart to do what they can to keep him here if they can cap wise.
Jordan crowing about CK7′s ascension to starting QB is funny considering he was campaigning to have him traded, not too long ago.
Thanks for that reminder, Claude. I can’t keep track of all the nonsense that Jordan spews.
Bay and Jordan, playing “I told you so” card is funny, too. I can’t remember saying CK7 would never make it, or Smith would be here forever, or anything close to that.
What I do remember is these guys being wrong, time after time, after time, after time, when saying Smith would be replaced by ________ [fill in the blank with any of the dozen, or so names put forth by those two]. Then, when Smith is finally replaced [which still isn't 100% certain - I hope it is because that means CK 7 is everything he appears to be], they start gloating and saying, “Boy, I sure called that one, look how smart I am!” Hilarious. It’s more like a room full of monkeys with trypewriters, eventually one of them will type something.
ExG
There wasn’t a QB on the team with more talent than Alex from 2005-2011. That a number of them got starts during that span is evidence of the horrific coaching that the team had in those years. Should have protected him better, should have game planned for him better. Should have elevated the position to where it belongs. Shaun Hill? Garbage with a peashooter. JTO? You must be joking! Troy Smith? Dumb as a box o rox.
But not Kaepernick. This is 1 of 4 QBs in the NFL that Jim Harbaugh personally recruited as a coach. The other 3 are Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, & RGIII. Smith’s tenure has come to an end. This is not a fill-in-the-blank situation, and Kaepernick will be around for a long time.
Pretty much exactly what I was saying, NO.
Just so it’s clear, I never came close to putting CK in the “fill in the blank” category. If you think otherwise, please reread my comment.
I liked CK before the 49ers drafted him, was excited when they did, and have been hopeful he would fulfill his promise, since.
It seems the only place we differ is how we’re expressing our support for CK.
ExG
Oh. Thanks. Not sure there’s any difference at all then. My ardent support for Alex is extinguished by my eager support for the better option. Thanking Alex for his service through the hard times, but eager to move on to a guy whose potential (and, apparently, production) is so much higher.
Exactly.
At the same time, I think it’s funny that guys like Bay and Jordan are crowing that they knew it all along. They’ve been wrong so many times, to now say “I told you so” is just laughable.
Hell, Jordan had CK being traded, earlier this year.
Ex,
how many times do you want to bring my name up? Don’t lump me in with anyone else.
What was I constantly wrong about? Cause from my standpoint I ALWAYS said AS was not good enough. I lived through the galaxy of excuses. BAd this, bad that, bad oline, bad WR, system, coaches blah blah blah.
I never guaranteed other QB was the answer, I just wanted other QB’s to get a shot. Because he was NEVER good enough.
Good QB’s don’t grow on trees. That’s why in the last two years they only tried to replace him twice. Manning and now CK.
I told Claude time and time again not good enough. Only to hear about quarterback rating. I said the QBR was a flawed system. Top five, so what. First place, so what. He is being replaced basically by a rookie, who is running the Harbaugh system the way it’s made to be run. Not death by check down.
Ex you are like every other Smither on here. You don’t like that I was right. Get over it. We are going in another direction now. Lets all enjoy it together. Your side got 8 years. This kid had one start and it was pretty exciting. I’m excited to see what his ceiling is.
Bay,
It’s seems that “being right” all the time isn’t your only trait, humility is buried in there somewhere!! LOL
If it were up to you Hof you’d give Smith 8 more years to develop.
Bay,
OK and based on your comments at the time, would have given MSing 8 more years! LOL
Bay,
I mention you because you are the exemplar of wrongness on the 49ers’ QB situation.
You also are very selective in your memory or lack the ability to process information.
I’ve always said I’d welcome a better QB than Smith. The problem is, this the first time the 49ers have had one available [assuming CK is the real deal, which it looks like he is].
The problem I’ve had with you, is your lack of appreciation for what Smith is, a good NFL QB. True, he’s not elite and it does look like he is at, or very near, his ceiling, but that doesn’t change the fact that he is a good QB.
You’ve wanted to replace Smith with Hill, McNabb, Kolb, Troy Smith, Josh Johnson, and a host of others that escape me, just now. And now that Smith is on the cusp of being replaced, you’re going to crow about? It’s a joke. The stopped clock is finally right. Wow, big deal.
One thing we do agree on, it is going to be very exciting to see what CK can do, and how soon. I hope he surpasses Smith, and every other 49er QB to date, including JM. Because that means success for the team.
Ex,
Whsts up with the personal jabs? Selective memory and lack the ability to process information..
I won’t retaliate and tell you only a dumb$hit would call a crackdown king a good QB.
As for you Hof, I wanted Sing gone too. New direction now Hof. All arrows up.
>>I won’t retaliate and tell you only a dumb$hit would call a crackdown king a good QB.
Go ahead. It will only add further confirmation to what ex is intimating.
Bay,
Case in point, I said OR, not AND. There is a difference.
What’s up with the personal jabs? Are you joking? You are the king of personal jabs.
BTW, if you want to call me a dumbs–t, just go ahead, I couldn’t care less.
Ex,
Show me where I said CK needs to be traded. I never said that you clown. Don’t make accusations without proof.
Jordan,
Claude posted a comment you made earlier this year in which you basically said that JJ was going to be the starter at some point this year, CK was never going to get to play and might as well be trade bait.
As usual, Claude posted the date and time you posted your comment under a recent thread, so it should be easy to find it, if you’ve forgotten your own position.
If for some reason you can’t find it, maybe you can get Claude to repost it, if you ask nicely.
Ex,
You post it, you put it out there. If you cant support it with the post, you shouldn’t run your mouth about it. You know not what you speak. You’ve got your foot in your mouth again. Just like when you lost a bet to me and claim you didn’t know you made one. Why don’t you just keep my name out of your posts and I’ll do the same. You sound like BS with that crap. Don’t use my posts or alleged posts to support your garbage. If you’re addressing Bay, use Bay’s post. Don’t create crap with an alleged post from me that you don’t know even exist. And to HELL with Claude!
Jordan,
You can try to muddy the waters with your usual blizzard of bull sh#t, but most of the regulars have seen Claude’s reposting of your claim that JJ would be ahead of CK on the roster, so CK could serve as trade bait.
I don’t get this…back up QB comes in for part of one game and “leads” team to a tie against a team we should have beat. Then has one, ONE good game…at home…and people are ready to make him the starter. Who’s been at the helm the last two seasons and what are the results?
If it at broke don’t fix it…if its running very well why even THINK about it? This has got to be a Harbaugh mind game. He makes this change I don’t think it bodes well for the locker room…regardless of what VD said…he’s been AS biggest supporter.
Anchor,
I understand what you’re saying, but if CK is better, then AS must be moved aside.
As much as Kaep has potential, and is likely the future, I would not assume that we have seen the last of Mister Smith. The passing of the torch between QBs is not always that linear or simple. DeBerg and Montana actually played musical chairs for a half season before Walsh settled on Joe. And I’m still not 100% convinced that Jimbo is not just effing with everyone here.
Heh, I do think it’s a little premature to be writing Alex’s obituary and permanently ousted by a QB who has played one single game. In other words, where have we seen this before?
Whomever starts has my support and cheers, but can we see what Knick looks like for more than that? Against other teams. Against other schemes. In different game situations, pressures, before pronouncing him the Savior of all that ails 49er-dom?
I hope to hell it doesn’t happen, we need the win this weekend. But what happens if Knick falls flat? Then what?
Rib,
He gets a chance to grow and develop. He was hand picked by Harbaugh. His guy.
Yes he was picked by JH but we’ll never know if he really was “his guy”!
Kaepernick has all the traits of the other QB’s Harbaugh has gone after. He is “his” guy. It’s just a matter of time.
Shadow?
OK, let’s just hope this “developing” doesn’t derail us while we are in a white-hot SuperBowl race.
Hof,
I’ve never believed the reports that JH wanted Dalton over CK. Obviously, I don’t know JH preferred CK to AD, but CK has physical abilities, which JH values, that AD just doesn’t have.
Peter King reported on Chron Live that in addition to all of the physical tools that CK possesses, JH saw the competetive drive in CK that he values above all else, and they bonded immediately during JH’s visit to Nevada, Reno.
Rib,
While it’s true, he’s only started one game, it is clear that CK is the future at QB for the 49ers. The question is the future is now or next year.
The question is is the future now, or next year.
Ex,
I agree. JH also said when he met with AS for the first time, he saw the competitive spirit he was hoping to see.
A lot of QBs have strong arms and running ability. BW stated he wanted the performer. The QB that you knew what he would bring to the offense – consistent and dependable. We haven’t seen that to date with the running QBs and one game isn’t a large enough sample size. TBD.
Hof says.
“A lot of QBs have strong arms and running ability. BW stated he wanted the performer. The QB that you knew what he would bring to the offense – consistent and dependable. We haven’t seen that to date with the running QBs and one game isn’t a large enough sample size. TBD.
If AS was depenable and consistent then we would not being having this topic. Ofcourse most would say he is inconsistently bad. lol
Hofe,
I think CK is going to prove to be a very good or better QB who can run well, when required, rather than simply a running QB.
Ex,
The future is now, err, tomorrow…
Ex, I hope so.
Jack,
I have little doubt that CK is going to start tomorrow. What is in question, in my mind anyway, is if the move is premanent, or conditionally permanent.
Ex,
I have the same question.I would say conditionaly permanent, but I think Kaep is going to light up the Saints D, and that will give us our answer.
Jack,
I hope you’re right [and I think there's a good chance you are - otherwise, why is Harbaugh starting him], because if CK is that good, that fast, you have to wonder, how high is up.
Rib
No such thing as being “in the Superbowl race” with Alex at QB.
If Harbaugh thought Alex was the right QB for that race, he would be starting him tomorrow. Now, lets not jump the gun here, right? Perhaps Harbaugh doesn’t have the option to start Alex because he’s still injured, so Kaep is the default as #2 … Right? Well, maybe, but if Harbaugh was ultra-confident in Alex, wouldn’t he have just said outright that Alex is the starter once he’s healthy enough?
By all signs, and this includes the “eye test”, Kaepernick is a FAR more dynamic player than Alex at the QB position; faster, bigger, stronger, stronger arm, more elusive, less sack-prone, more apt to scan deep before going shallow, cooler in the pocket … the list goes on.
“more dynamic player than Alex at the QB position; faster, bigger, stronger, stronger arm, more elusive, less sack-prone, more apt to scan deep before going shallow, cooler in the pocket … the list goes on.”
I’ve heard the same positives about MVick and VYoung as well. TBrady and PManning don’t have all those QB attributes you list either yet they are SB winners.
Regardless of what you may believe, there are no absolutes, but let’s see how this plays out!!
Hof,
As a ex Smither, maybe not, are you saying that AS is in the same category as PM and TB?
Neal,
No, but I can say you’re not in the category of Bay and Jordo! LOL
N.O,
The 49er offense plays at a different tempo with Kaepernick.
The offense is like a thoroughbred preparing for the Kentucky Derby. The trainer is realizing his first jockey was too fat for it to reach it’s full potential, so he is switching to a more lightweight winner.
hofer,
While you go to sleep, do you count number 11 jerseys instead of lambs? lol
Neal,
No, I count money! LOL
>>No such thing as being “in the Superbowl race” with Alex at QB.
Is there such a thing as intelligent commentary from Neanderthal?
Hofer
Why are you such a contrarian? Why fall so valiantly on your sword for Smith?
Brady and Peyton possess greater attributes than Smith also. Perhaps he is faster and more elusive (and maybe stronger), but they are superior in all the other attributes.
Hofer, your allegiance to Smith (over the well-being of the team) is bizarre.
Rib
Don’t come at me, dude. I’m not engaging in the name-calling and negativity.
You have a serious problem with objectivity. Your faith in Alex is nice, but it blinds you to the fact that he has never been more than he was in New Orleans last year, that his true nature was revealed against the Giants.
It’s not a hater move to call it like it is after supporting Alex all throughout the last year. At what point do you, Rib, say “Enough” with the game-breaking INTs and putrid play? Antrel Rolle loves playing against Alex Smith.
N.O.
Because unlike you, I deal in facts. I don’t state absolutes or agenda based propaganda to disparage one player. I keep it real!
Since you’ve returned here with this new credo, you’ve been anything but fair and balanced. Maybe you were more interesting under the umbrella of your former “handle”?!!
Hofer
Can you talk football rather than pseudo-psychology?
Why didn’t Harbaugh come out and say “Alex is our starter as soon as he’s healthy?”
Wouldn’t that have been better for the team, and for Alex, if Alex was the chosen one? And as for the MEASURABLES, do they not mean anything to you?
Quit with the personal jabs and get back to football!
Sorry Hofer
I think I had to do a double-take! Did you say you don’t have an agenda-based argument? Like, as in, Smither to the death?
N.O.
What I stated is that you’ve written nothing but hyperbole. Where are the facts? Don’t pretend to know me because many here know my comments are solely based on facts. If you want a debate, bring something worthy of our time here.
Hofer
The MEASURABLES are facts.
Kaepernick was sacked one time in that game, through no fault of his own. He ran to his left twice. The first time he threw the ball away, the second time he threw a TD to Crabtree. Those are facts.
Smith has taken more sacks over the course of the last two years than every QB on the league other than Cutler and a couple others. That is a fact. The Niners have 3 1st rounders on their OL and a Superbowl winning center. Their other OL would have been a 1st rounder but he had a drinking problem in college and was therefore downgraded. Their OL is very good. Smith should not have taken half as many sacks as he has.
Smith has improved significantly since Harbaugh arrived. Fact. Yet Harbaugh refused to cement Smith as his starter upon becoming healthy. Fact.
Can you imagine that happening in Denver, New York, New England, Green Bay, New Orleans, Detroit, Houston, Tampa Bay, or Atlanta?
Hofer, there are some facts in there, and some inferences. The most poignant fact is that for the first time since coming to San Francisco, Harbaugh has avoided going all in on Smith. The most reasonable inference to take away from that fact is that he believes Kaepernick is a better option to take the team to its 6th Lombardi trophy.

Your going to have to give the PD a royalty for peddling your nonsense..er blog here. Shameful! LOL

How do you get the crayons to show up on the screen, and are they hard to clean off? I haven’t seen the all-22, does it allow you to screen print and edit the images in a photo editor?
It has a telestrator. You can pause, draw, save, and then once you hit play it erases on it’s own.
Coffee
You’re a decent dude. I’m done with the other day’s nonsense. My apologies.
The NFL Game Rewind, for $69.99, is a great product. You can rewatch any game in the league from either the televised or coaches’ perspective.
Jack is using his access well, and benefitting his readers by providing visual evidence for the assertions he puts forth. I’m not sure he’s always right (Jack, did you find the VD bow to CK yet?), but it’s great to be able to follow along.
Would love a edit button that they have on Facebook.
Jack … Nice article, yet again.
Points to Consider:
1. Have the Saints really been tested during their recent 5-1 streak? Four of the teams they played during that stretch are certainly not playoff-bound.
2. Should the Niners pound it inside with Gore and Hunter from the beginning or attempt to use Kaepernick’s dynamic abilities early on to get a big lead and then pound it in the 2nd half? If they choose the former and stall out, the defense will be under pressure the entire game. If they choose the latter and stall out, the defense will likewise be under pressure AND the option of using Kaepernick in essence becomes a necessity borne of desperation.
3. Will there be retribution doled out against the Saints by the Niners defense?
4. Who is the Saints’ slot receiver? (Don’t say Sproles)
The Saints will use all of their guys from the slot. Watch out for Tarvaris Cadet. He is an undrafted rookie RB that the 49ers brought in for a pre draft visit. The Saints have been using him as a receiving threat out of the backfield on plays similar to what Minnesota threw at the 49ers with Percy Harvin.
Colston has spent most of his career playing out of the slot and I think if they move him they put Moore in that position.
Thx Jack. That’s an interesting morsel.
As for Colston and Moore, it seems neither is the ridiculously dynamic type of player that have given the Niners problems … Harvin/Amendola/Cruz
With the emergence of Randall Cobb, I anticipate a very tough battle against the Packers if we see them again this year.
What Colston lacks in separation speed he makes up for with his size and ability to either go up and get the ball or putting his body in position to make the catch. It’s not likely that he’ll catch any 50 yard bombs against us but he’s a threat to break a tackle and snap one off. He’s a taller beefier version of Crabtree.
I love Colston, but I don’t think he’ll hurt us at all. I think the danger players are Sproles and Graham.
In the Divisional game last year Colston had 9 catches for 136 yards and a TD, Sproles had 15 for 118 and a TD and Graham 5/103 and 2 TD.
It’s truly a case of pick your poison, they’ll have their hands full for sure.
I think that even with Kaepernick playing, we’re going to see a run-heavy game tomorrow against that 32nd ranked Saints run defense and keep Brees off the field as much as possible. There’s no reason to put Kaepernick in a position to get in a shoot-out in a hostile environment. It may not be as exciting as last game, but would be a better way to get a win on the road and keep Kaepernick’s confidence up, if indeed, the plan is to keep him as the starter for the rest of the season.
Space,
I agree. The 9ers know they will need to keep the ball out of DB’s hand or it will be a shootout and those are they types of games the Saints win. It will be run heavy with long sustained drives. Do you believe the Saints are motivated after last year’s playoff loss?
Hofer, I’m sure a little payback is on all the Saint’s players minds since the 49ers ended their post-season run. Not only that, they are in a position where just about every game is a must-win to even get a shot at a wild-card spot unless Atlanta has a historical meltdown. I believe their defense is going to show up for this home game with bad intentions even without Williams as DC. Spags will dial-up the pressure on Kaepernick on obvious passing downs with a bunch of screaming Saint’s fans doing their best to disrupt the 49er offense, so you’re right, you need a couple of long-sustained drives to try to take them out of the game as much as possible. I was at last year’s preseason game in NO and it was bad enough for a meaningless game, but with the season on the line, I expect bedlam.
If the idea of this question is to prepare folks (or gin up support) for his exit, it seems a bit premature. Smith has another good five years or so in the league. And with Harbaugh at the controls, who knows where this goes. He may start Smith tomorrow. Nobody knows. Seems illogical to do but when has that stopped Harbs? Hell, he may well do it just to spite the media. Stranger things have happened.
Do you feel sorry for a guy who makes millions doing a job he loves to do? Nope. Most of us can only dream about that. Most of us are not in dream careers and we’re certainly lucky if we’re making a true living wage. I do make over $22 an hour, which is what some believe is the true living wage but many of my friends and family do not and some are struggling to make ends meet these days. That’s who I feel bad for. I feel sorry for the 15% of Americans who are unemployed or who have re-entered the workforce to miserable part time jobs and no benefits (many times being highly over-qualified for these types of jobs). I feel bad for 19,000 workers at Hostess who lost their jobs while the management (in true elite harvest mode) gave themselves bonuses. There will be more of us falling in to poverty or losing more of our earning power before it’s all over. The average Joe and his family, that’s who I feel sorry for.
OK, football related, then: Certainly we can feel bad for the guy sitting out for two years of his career with a painful shoulder injury, broken bone, etc. You never wish that on any player.
I feel bad for all the guys who have stuck this out (including Smith) and have had to weather the storm of uneducated and fickle bandwagon fans, inept coaches, disengaged owners, lack of talent in the trenches and skill positions, etc., but… they have stuck it out and in that sense they’ve all won.
I don’t feel sorry for Smith. He’s proven that if you can stick it out when things look completely hopeless and black and work hard, support your teammates and continue to learn and improve yourself that you can come out the other side the better for it and to finally show what you have.
Smith is a very good QB these last two years, nothing at all to feel sorry for or for him to hang his head and apologize for. He’s broken records, in true 49er style, had a personal best (and built on that) and proven once and for all that he can play the game. All the players deserve stability (lack of chaos) in positions above them, rational expectations, excellent coaching and guidance and skill positions around them that are accountable and operating at the same high levels. Unfortunately for most of Smith’s career, he’s been caught in the Niner train wreck.
Smith will be fine, here or anywhere else. He has a body of work these last few years that forced the haters to eat crow, the media and talking heads to pay attention and praise his work, and fellow players in the league to show him respect and friendship.
On balance… nope, don’t feel sorry for him. I feel proud as a true Niner fan that a guy on my team had the guts and determination to pull himself off the discard pile and come back and make himself one of the more relevant QBs in the league. Records, trophies and miracles – that’s Forty Niner football.
Adam – once again, well done. I do believe you are the best writer by far on this blog. If you had your own blog I would read it all the time. You dont talk in absolutes, your unbiased, and you dont have an agenda. Your thoughts are well organized and it shows in your writings.
+1
Under don’t forget about the great Rocket. He’s right up there with Adam.
Hof
Yes Rocket is also very good, enjoy reading his post all the time. I also enjoy reading yours also.
Thanks Under. I enjoy your reads as well!
Under, Hofer,
Go get a room!!! Lol
( just kidding, what about my posts? Bwahahaha!
Jordo,
I see they let you out of your dark, padded, locked room. Just a visit or is this a long stay?!! LOL
Hell NO! Have you seen his bank account. I won’t see that in 5 lifetimes!
Ok, so we THINK it’s going to be CK to start this week. Now, on to some other burning questions:
Will Archie choose Betty or Veronica?
Lagunitas IPA or Pliny the Elder?
Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir?
Compare and contrast.
Hey Brotha,
Had a nice chard and pinot from Testarossa Winery for Thanksgving.
@ Hofe
I like everything from Testarossa; Chard, Pinot, Syrah. We agree so you must be an expert.
“We agree so you must be an expert.”
Nice. LOL
Hof, did you have a chance to try the Von Strasser?
And the burning question that’s always vexed me Brotha: What if it turns out that the Hokey-Pokey really IS what it’s all about?
Does Hokey+Pokey = 42?
@ FF
or if “six turned out to be 9″?
Well I guess both Alex and his uncle John L learned they’re getting replaced this week..
A little, but not as bad as I feel for the bakers at Hostess.
If Kaepernick raises the Niners’ offense like he did against the Bears I wouldn’t be happier. But I wouldn’t mind A. Smith sticking around for another year or two as a backup. It’s a luxury the team can afford (although I suspect he’d have to renegotiate his bonus).

AES,
Correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t both Plunkett’s parents blind? I remember seeing an interview with Plunkett said neither parent ever saw him play.
@Houston
You are correct about JP’ mother being blind. His father was blind as well. Jim worked after high school doing misc jobs to help support the family.
And JP actually won two Super Bowls.
@55Niners
Monte Clark was 8-6 in his only year as a 49er coach. So you are correct to check me on my comment that Nolan/Singletary was better.
I wonder what might have been if Monte Clark had stayed on as the 49ers coach. He actually left the team when Eddie Debartolo Jr. became the new owner and hired Joe Thomas as GM. Joe Thomas may have been the worse GM in the franchises history.
Hofer
Do me a favor and read this article …

The kid has “it.” He’s a performer, a winner, and stubborn as a mule.
I would only fee sorry for Smith if CK stumbles and the Niners don’t win it all. It’s a team game, and if CK takes over now, and the Niners run the table, Smith gets a ring without having to prove he could have won it! He’s a part of the reason the Niners have a winning record, even if we don’t like his productivity. I mean, just look at Mark Sanchez in NY. Do you think we would have our record now if he was the starting QB?
2013 is CK’s year, there is no doubting that now. If he does indeed take over, let’s hope he gets rid of his stink bombs sooner rather than later. He’s going to have growing pains, every great QB does.
I certainly feel sorry for Alex Smith. I’ve been hurting ever since I saw Kap score in that Jet game. I’ve been feeling sorry for my team since the day they drafted Alex Smith.
Awww to hell with it. I’m as thankful as hell that JH finally pulled the plug on Smith. He was a well played anchor around this teams neck. I told you Smithers that we couldn’t win a super bowl with him. JH realized it 9 games too late this season. At least JH finally got it right. The coach killer got Sing and Nolan and others. JH decided to trust his eyes.
Hell no dont feel sorry for him! Im not big 49ers fan so dont know the whole story? Is he hurt or being benched? Regardless of reason he’s a professional making millions of dollars playing a game he loves. Or at least used to love. At this level if your getting paid big bucks they pay this for you to perform at a high level & to give your team the best chance at winning. So if the dude with crazy last name I cant pronounce is playing at better level or gives the 49ers a better chance at winning then he should start If i was Smith it wouldnt hurt my feelings one bit. If you feel like paying me millions of bucks to sit on bench & not have to get hit or risk getting injured i would be all over it. Regardless of how bad i want to play. Its a job & game so whoever is performing at highest level should start. IF He doesnt like it then practice & train harder prove to coaches your better player & win your job back. If he does this & still doesnt get starting job back then im sure they will trade him or let him get paid not to get creamed weekend weekout. Thats just my 2 cents because i sure wouldnt cry & whine to get paid lots and lots of money doing something i love! He’s already lived ouylt what most men wish & dream they could do! Get paid playing something you love!!!
