Fangio on the 49ers D’s problem covering quick slot receivers: “I don’t see it as an epidemic by any means.”

SANTA CLARA – Here’s what Vic Fangio said at his Saturday press conference about the 49ers defense’s recent struggles covering slot receivers.

ME: Your defense has struggled to cover quick inside receivers. What do you attribute that to, and has it had an effect on the overall defense?

FANGIO: Everybody has a little bit of a hard time covering some of those guys. It’s just a tough position at times for the nickel to cover, or the corner if he’s inside. We’ve gone against some good slot receivers. They’ve caught some balls on us, but I don’t see it as an epidemic by any means.

CI: Would you consider putting Perrish Cox at nickelback to see how he can do?

FANGIO: He’s the guy who plays behind Carlos in that role, and if something ever happened, Perrish would be the guy who went it. But we haven’t considered replacing Carlos with him, no.

I’d like to see this defense come out and silence the critics with an outstanding performance. A shut out would do it.

Agreed Razor. I see the 49er defense coming out of this game reclaiming their title as the best defense in the NFL.

      Good write up Jack.
      I think niners win 23-3

Jack, The same old story, a player signs a big contract, and his play slips, knew that was going to happen with Rogers.

      Jack
      1. No
      2. Yes
      3. No
      4. Yes
      5. They will dominate – especially in the run game

    • Coffee's for closers says:

Tampa 2 defensive lineman are fast but small, we should be able to absolutely maul them in the run game. We’ll take away their speed rush with quick passes and expect to see a few more screens this week as well.

      @ Jack:

      Since you asked nicely:

      1. Yes, no.
      2. Yes, but I’d rather not see a lot of attempts from within the 40. I’d rather the 49ers keep scoring TDs when they get that close.
      3. Not so much this week. Bennett isn’t Cruz or Amendola.
      4. They should be fine this week.
      5. They should do well in the run game. Pass protection likely to be hit or miss.

    • MidWestNiner says:

      1. Yes to the first question and no to the second one.
      2. Technically he is kicking like last season. The only difference is that the offense is doing better in the redzone so he has had less gimmes this season.
      3. Yes.
      4. Not against the tandem of Forte and Bush.
      5. They will maul the Bears in the run game and struggle but persevere in the passing game.

My prediction is Niners 34 Bears 13.

  2. Coffee's for closers says:

Looks like the Cardinals got their only TD out of the way early today.

  3. tkamB says:

    Matt Ryan 3 picks?? BENCH

  4. Coffee's for closers says:

Jacksonville is a better team with Henne. I’ve been pro Gabbert but the offense is more productive with Chad back there. If they ever get some consistency at QB it’ll be a good offense because a couple of those wide receivers look pretty good especially Shorts.
