Harbaugh names Kaepernick the starting QB

SANTA CLARA — Jim Harbaugh just named Colin Kaepernick the 49ers starter against the Rams this Sunday. Here’s everything Harbaugh said about his decision.

Q: Have you made a decision as to which quarterback you will start against the Rams?

HARBAUGH: We plan to start Colin Kaepernick. We’re preparing him to make that start this week against the Rams.

Q: What’s the rationale behind that?

HARBAUGH: The rationale is we have two quarterbacks that we feel great about as a starting quarterback. Both have earned it, both deserve it – Alex over a long period of time, Colin by virtue of the last three games. It tips the scales. Colin we believe has the hot hand. We’ll go with Colin. And we’ll go with Alex. They’re both our guys.

Q: Do you ask input from other players, or was it your decision?

HARBAUGH: I talk to players all the time, all day, anybody who wants to talk to me about any topic. This is one of those decisions that you make as the head coach.

Q: Have you gotten any feedback from the players on this decision?

HARBAUGH: You really don’t have the right to know what those conversations are. The players believe in both guys.

Q: Would you consider a bullpen situation between the two quarterbacks?

HARBAUGH: We’re not going to speculate on it. We’re worried about everything and we fear nothing – no moment, no circumstance.

Q: Are you saying Colin Kaepernick is your quarterback going forward, that it’s not a one-week thing?

HARBAUGH: No, I wouldn’t assume anything. I know you probably will, but I assume nothing.

Q: With a young quarterback like Colin, do you have to be prepared from some bumps in the road?

HARBAUGH: Like I said, we worry about everything. That’s part of my job. But as a team, we don’t fear any moment or circumstance.

Q: Are you afraid if one of your players gets a concussion in the future he won’t tell you?

HARBAUGH: That would be something to worry about. I would never want that message sent to our players.

ME: Have you handled things adequately with Alex Smith coach-to-player?

HARBAUGH: By who’s standards?

ME: Do you feel like it’s fair to dangle Alex Smith’s status?

HARBAUGH: Make your own judgement. I’ve explained exactly what the decision’s been made on and how I feel about both of our quarterbacks. I told you how our team feels about both quarterbacks. I feel like there’s nothing more to add.

Q: Emotionally for you, how difficult was it to make this decision?

HARBAUGH: All these decisions are difficult. You think through them the best you possibly can.

Q: How did Alex take the news?

HARBAUGH: Alex is a class act all the way. He’ll prepare as if he were the starter, and that’s what we would expect – be ready to go in and play and get a victory for the football team.

Q: Is there a chance you’d play both of them?

HARBAUGH: Anything’s a possibility. I assume nothing or rule out anything. Again, we’ve plowed that ground about as thoroughly as we can.

Q: You’ve always said you want to get 1 percent better everyday. Is this decision part of that?

HARBAUGH: I feel sometimes that I stand up here and talk to you, and I can read your eyes. Maybe you think I’m holding back or not giving you something that’s not there. I’ve given you everything. I’ve explained it very well.

Q: Did you see Colin close to the gap in practice?

HARBAUGH: I’m not going to compare the two. They’re both good.

Q: Was there something you saw in practice, or did the game show it?

HARBAUGH: I’ve seen it both in practice and in games that Colin is playing good. I’ve seen it both in practice and in games that Alex is a very good player.

Q: Did you tell them Kaepernick will start each week or just now?

HARBAUGH: I think I’ve covered and plowed that ground about as thoroughly as it can be plowed.

Q: Beyond the hot hand, what made you choose Kaepernick over Smith?

HARBAUGH: I think I’ve plowed that ground very thoroughly and told you exactly how I viewed it.

Q: There’s a saying that you don’t lose your job to an injury. What was your thinking there?

HARBAUGH: We have two very good quarterbacks. It’s a unique situation – you have two guys you feel can win for you, have won for you. Two guys that deserve it. Two guys that have earned it.

    JH is the man

    • jgwindsor says:

funny the clouds have parted up here and the sun is shining through….this is classic

    • jgwindsor says:

i am disappointed i won’t get to hear all the pundits pontificate about JH’s decision until later tonight after i wake up….except for rice …he gave JH a D for his placating attitude towards AS

    • pete4mtx says:

JH is the man…but i wonder if AS has any trade value…i mean wouldn’t someone like Arizona or any other team without a qb want Smith??h

  2. Hov says:

Na na na na na na na heyyyyyyyy goodbye Alex bleepn smith!!!! Lmao

    • drsgrosse says:

      Grow up.

      • matt says:

Apparently you didn’t take the advise you should leave since you’re so unhappy with Grant and all of us on this site DRS. I don’t understand why you degrade the writer of this blog and the contributors, then still stay here writing comments.

  3. Foamingatdamouth says:

It’s time to put this media hyped controversy to rest. The players need to focus on building momentum for the playoffs, and the fanbase needs to enjoy the game without the soap opera side show.

The only time Smith is going to play is if Kaep get’s injured or if he does farewell mop up duty on the last game of the season.

  4. Neanderthal Offense says:

Hey Diddle Diddle there goes Ray Rice’s coach’s Brother’s starter’s laserbeam across the middle

  5. Mr. Automatic says:

Cue the haters and the in-your-face-rubbing in 3… 2… 1…

Bold, aggressive move by Coach Harbaugh. As a fan, I want this team to win and if he thinks Kaptain Kaep is the best move for the team, I’m all in. The kid has shown some great potential and absolutely has the “it” factor. I’m so excited for the future and the “new”-look 49ers! This team is scary(!) now!

On the other hand, I’m a pretty big believer in karma and can’t get away from the feeling Alex just got hosed. I just hope there’s no room for comes-back-around’s in professional football. Good luck to you going forward, Alex. You’re a good man with great character and class. In the grand scheme, you deserve better.

    • bayareafanatic says:

      +1

    • Neanderthal Offense says:

      What a load of hogswallop!

Without Harbaugh’s influence over a 26 game period, Alex wouldn’t have anywhere near the leverage he’s going to have this offseason. The 49ers have paid him close to $45M since 2005, and because of Harbaugh, his earning power will likely stay relatively strong throughout his next contract.

Alex didn’t get hosed. As weird as it sounds 15 minutes after the decision, this is a win-win across the board…

      • Mr. Automatic says:

Can’t say I disagree NO (except maybe with the hogswallop part… more like balderdash? lol).

Some assumptions to follow: professionally, Smith comes out of this as a free agent with much more upside and worth than he had last time he had to test the market. No question. (I’ll never be able to say “no question” again without thinking of AS) Surely, he’s made a ton of money and his family is well set up for life. But he’s handled the ups and downs of the past 8 years like a true professional as well; classy and with aplomb. In a league riddled with degenerates and me-first (or me-only) personalities, he’s set himself apart and above. Would’ve liked to have seen him get a fairytale ending, I guess, to make me feel like the glass slipper fits or something.

Hell, even I don’t know what I’m trying to say anymore. haha I think I’m just gonna go back to lurking now. ;) (Congratulations Kaep!)

    • Forever Faithful says:

Well-said on both of these posts, Baron Otto Matik.

Here’s hoping we can all get past this b.s. controversy/name-calling/hating and just get back to backing our Niners.

  6. Caveman says:

    Certainly not a shocking development.

CK has more upside, no doubt. I still feel bad for AS though. There goes his payday too. I was thinking of up to 8 other teams in the NFL that could use AS as their starter considering their QB issues currently, but he’ll definitely be playing in the NFL next year as a backup at least, so that’s good for him.

Let’s go CK, it’s your time to shine.

  7. Crab15 says:

I said this morning why Harbaugh would go with RoboKap….With 5 more games of valuable experience, Kap will be better prepared for playoffs.
The future is now! It has been determined.

  8. DClark says:

Either way, the niners were gonna be fine, i’m outta here before all the gloating morons make me puke. The pleasure some people are gleaning from one mans misfortune is sickening.

    • Adam says:

The gloating haters are pretty much despicable human beings. But there’s nothing new there.

Good luck to both guys moving forward.

Experts on espn radio were talking about Smith to Oakland next year. Nothing exciting in the draft and Palmer will be gone. We shall see.

      • Jack Hammer says:

That would be an interesting move on a couple levels…

      • AngusinCanada says:

I wasn’t sure about Palmer’s status. I really think that’s a strong possibility. Smith won’t want to uproot his family if possible.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Really. The Raiders? a team who’s tradition is in the vertical passing game and has no tight end which Smith likes to throw to?
No Defense and no ball control running game to speak of?
        I think not.

      • rocket says:

        Bay,

That’s the old Raiders. The current Raiders offense is run by Gregg Knapp. Smith would be ideal for him. I’m not sure they’d dump Palmer though. He’s played fine; it’s their defense that has been a disaster.

      • La-La Land says:

Pryor needs to get a look first. Not sure they would get rid of Palmer for Smith.

Methinks it will be another SF-to-KC move (Montana, Bono, Grbac) for Alex.

      • Adam says:

Whew. The talk today is just blasting Harbaugh for his how he’s handled this. Ugly.

      • SorryNoDice says:

The gloating Smithers (that includes you) are equally despicable, and you pretty much deserve what you get. Why do you, Prime, DS, Hofer or any other smither deserve anything else?

      • BigP says:

        Adam,
Is there a pretty way to handle it? I don’t know how it can be that shocking considering the way the team has handled Smith since the end of last season. In hindsight, he was always a stop gap.

      • OpenMinded says:

Crystal ball thinking: Greg Roman will be interviewed by an NFL team at the end of the season. He’ll get the job and bring Alex Smith and Delanie Walker and Isaac Sopoaga, Dashon Goldson and Ted Ginn Jr. with him. Niners will still win the NFC West in 2013 without all these chess pieces. In the end, it’s just about the win and Harbaugh is not about loyalty but about wins. As fans of the Niners we will still be happy. As fans of the players, we will wish them well wherever they are.

  9. Mark says:

    As a fan, I’m disappointed.

So, how long till Alex asked to be released from his contract?

    • Jack Hammer says:

Alex is a bigger man than that. As a fan you should know that…

      • Mark says:

        Hi Jack Hammer,
I know Smith a bigger man than to walk now, but all bets are off after the season ends. I mean how much can one man take in terms of insult and injury, literally on both counts.

    • Neal says:

He will stick it out through the season, he still might play if Kaep gets hurt, but no signing bonus in April, I can give you 7.5 million reasons, why that won’t happen.

      • AngusinCanada says:

I’d imagine he’ll be released prior to receiving the roster bonus, or if not, traded thereafter receiving it. Unless something happens later this season, and he becomes the starter again, we’ve seen the last of A. Smith in a 49ers uniform.

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Keep your head up Mark. In Harbaugh we trust. The best man won the Job. Get your chin out of your chest. Tell Alex to do the same thing. All arrows up, right Hofer! Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah !

      • Mark says:

I think Kaepernick won the job a season early.

Again, he couldn’t be the Rams the last time he played them and without two defensive Pick 6 plays he, in all likelihood would’ve lost on Sunday.

I know he’s the current Nate Davis/Shaun Hill/Troy Smith/shiny thing, but he’s not perfect and people have been inflating his effectiveness.

All that being said, I still think he’s the starter next season but I think Harbaugh has made a (rare) mistake with this call.

      • pete4mtx says:

        Mark
I hear the smallest violin behind your comment…
Be happy we are a better team now

      • sledpunchingback says:

Mark you are a puzzle I will not attempt to figure out.

We look like the old 49ers, the team many of us are used to, scoring 20pts before halftime (when does that ever happen with Alex?) and you still have your tail between your legs??

I know fans like you will be grinning bigger than most now that you’re gonna see our team light it up.

Shaun and Nate were both better than Alex, but their coaches didn’t have balls to roll with them like JH.

      • Mark says:

        Pete,
No violin. I just disagree with the call. I don’t believe Kaepernick is the better QB for the team right now.

      • 23jordan/ I told you so! says:

        Mark,

Just for the sake of comedy, lets hear your case for Alex Smith to start. Leave your sympathy for him and what he’s been through in the past out of the equation. Lets use what we have seen on the field. I’m listening, then I will counter.

      • Mark says:

        23jordan,
The case is simple. Alex is 19-5-1 (though the tie really belongs to Kaepernick) under Harbaugh. He’s got playoff experience and the offense trusts his leadership.

And to take it away from Smith, specifically, it’s still a rotten message to send to the locker room that you’re benching the offensive captain they chose because of an injury. How does that play out to the other players? How secure do their jobs feel if they’re out for a week or two?

You spend a lot of time insulting people and basically acting like a spoiled child in this forum. Perhaps you might want to consider a little more politeness and civility.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Mark,
I get that you are depressed. Step out of the room. We are celebrating.
If you want I can paste a link to a place that has alternative methods of treating depression. Buy a #7 jersey, it will make you feel better…

      • Mark says:

Bay, I’m quite happy in my #8 jersey. A better quarterback than either of the one’s we’re discussing.

        lol

        Not depressed, just disagree.

      • 23jordan/ I told you so! says:

        Mark,

Let me deal with the football aspect 1st. Somehow you managed to draw the conclusion that Alex Smith was 19-5. Who do you think that is attributed to? Try Jim Harbaugh. The coach that mad the decision to bench Alex Smith. JH is the guy that makes 5 mil a year to evaluate Manning, Smith an Kaepernick.
Playoff experience??? Alex Smith has played 2 playoff games in his entire life. He played the best game of his life in spurts in one of them. He went 0-13 on 3rd down in the other with no results in the 2nd half. That’s hardly a ton of playoff experience.
How the heck does that tie go to Kaepernick? He came in the game when his team was down a touchdown. I say that both players contributed to the tie. Kap brought them back from behind.
Mark, this is a solid team. Everyone on this team trusts each other. More importantly, everyone on this team trust JH. He is in complete control of this team.
You didn’t tell me what about his effectiveness has been inflated. Is he a better athlete than Smith? Does he have a stronger arm? Has he shown better pocket awareness? How about his escapeability? What about his big plays as compared to Smiths? You do realize he is 2-0 as a starter? Now which one of those stats have been inflated? He’s averaging more than 35 yards a game passing more than Smith.
Mark, Smith didn’t lose his job because he got hurt. He lost his job because he got replaced after that injury by someone who came in and played better against some quality opponents than Smith had against some weaker ones. The injury had nothing to do with it. JH said as much.

Lastly, you’ve not been here long enough to know if, when or why I insult anyone here. I don’t insult anyone here who does not insult me. For exmple, have I insulted you? No, but you have insulted me. You said I acted like a 13 year old. That makes you a hypocrite dude. Maybe you need to check yourself. Spend a little time here before you think you have a read of the room. I’ve taken more insults of anyone on this blog. You should know how it happens, you offered an insult yourself today.
In closing, know that the coach has spoken. He made the right decision. You have a right to your opinion, as flawed as it may be. I gave you mine. Stay tuned so I can give you more evidence after we punish the Rams this week.

      • Mark says:

        23jordan,
You’re absolutely right, I did say you were acting like a 13 year old. Because you have been.

The reason I said that is that you seem to constantly belittle anyone that disagrees with you and then accuse them of “disrespecting” you if they call you on it. That’s how 13 year olds act. Ergo, the shoe fits.

And stop telling me I haven’t been here, I’ve been reading this blog for years with much better writers that Grant Cohn. Maiocco and Branch were better.

As for Smith’s numbers, I specified that those numbers applied under this coaching staff and under Harbaugh.

As you throw Smith under the bus and as you trash anyone who disagrees with your decision that Alex is useless and should be gone, perhaps you should remember something else about him. Last season we had a lockout and Alex Smith, without a contract took the playbook that Harbaugh had trusted him enough to have and, at his own expense, set up training camps for the team when they couldn’t practice with the coaches.

A big reason that they did well last year was because of “Camp Alex”.

A player that would do that without being absolutely sure of being signed is owed by an organization and if you can’t see that, you don’t understand what REALLY makes a team like the 49ers work.

      • 23jordan/ I told you so! says:

        Mark,

We talked about you not getting sentimental on me. Right now, we don’t care about Camp Alex. If Kaepernick had organized camp RoboKap and Smith was the Better QB, I’d say bench RoboKap. However, we’re not talking about what S,other did last year. It’s about results on the field. I’ve asked you what Alex does better on the field than Kap. You answered with Smiths record. That’s not good enough to prove your point to me or JH. That’s why Smith is now your 2nd string QB.
You even want to insult Grant now by saying he’s not better than the guys before him. Mark, look in the mirror. You really sound like a jilted Alex Smith teen. Maybe you’re the real 13 year old stealing dads computer? However, 13 or not, RoboKap is your new starting QB for your San Francisco 49ers. You are a Niner fan right? Or are you a Smith fan. Bay told you, the station wagon left hours ago. Good night now!

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Marc,
step away from the sharp objects. Maybe this isn’t the room for you Mark. This is a 49er room. And coming in here and insulting the blog writer and pissing on the parade isn’t cool brother.
The Captain of the team didn’t get benched because of injury. He got benched because the coach knew that his “safe” game would get him to the playoffs, but it wouldn’t beat the Giants.
Smith’s game alienated the WR routes and didn’t fully execute the Harbaugh offense.
Kaep came in and registered the highest QBR for a QB’s first two games in the history of the game.
Please don’t make me list a mountain of stats that favor young K-gun. My favorite one is sacks. Smith sacked 6 times in his last 27 attempts. K-gun sacked 1 time in his last 48.
Move along Mark and enjoy the team. You don’t sound like a fan, but more like a family member of Smiths…

      • Neanderthal Offense says:

        Mark,

The greatest coach who ever lived never believed in job security. He wanted his locker room to strive for perfection, and each and every player knew the guy behind him was gunning for his job. The superior players like Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott never were replaced, but every other position was up for grabs. That’s the nature of the game. That’s the nature of excellence.

The QB position has been the weakest part of the team this year. Preposterous, you say? Well, don’t believe me, believe Harbaugh. That’s the only position in which he’s promoted an up and coming talent. Loyalty, you say? You are absulutely right! Alex can and will show his loyalty to his team and fellow teammates by continuing to shepherd the development of the superior talent who took his job.

      • BigP says:

        Mark,
Let it go dude. The tie belongs to Kaep? Lol, he inherited Smith’s deficit in that game and brought the team back before Akers missed what would have been a game winning FG. You made a comment about the two pick sixes last Sunday, how would Smith have fared against the Saints in the playoffs without the benefit of FIVE N.O. turnovers? Trust Harbaugh (except when he speaks to the media), there is a reason he gets paid $5 million a year.

  10. Neanderthal Offense says:

… and Kaepernick is now on the clock …

Get ready, Pal! You’re not the first and you won’t be the last …

… don’t worry Colin, we’ll keep the pine nice and polished while you’re honeymooning with Alex’s birthright

  11. 23jordan/I told you so. says:

    Smithers,

Sorry, I TOLD YOU SO!!!!! the RoboKap express takes off in 15 minutes. Either you’re in or not. We have a few seats left, in the trunk! You’re welcome to them. Your names are on them as well. Hofer, Rocket, Claude, Ribico. Unfortunately, there not enough room for prime time and BS. We will check back with you new hates after the Super Bowl party!!! Bye Bye!!

    • DClark says:

Haha you crowing about being right!! You are a joke, oh the irony.

    • Calistoga Red says:

Stop with the “I told you so’s” Jordan: you’ve been wrong on so many level about the QB situation over the last couple years pushing for anyone but Smith. Even this past summer you were saying CK was done and that JJ would unseat Smith as the starter at the beginning of the season.

Yes, CK provides greater upside and the games have been more exciting with him in there, but to tout yourself as the “QB savant” when you were finally right is just plan silly.

    • Neanderthal Offense says:

      Okay now, Jordy

For the last season and a half, you have devoted yourself entirely to this very moment! What are you gonna do now?!!!

      • Grumpy Guy says:

        He’s going to Disneyland?

        ;)

      • Neanderthal Offense says:

        The Grump is the Man!!!

      • rocket says:

For the last season and a half, you have devoted yourself entirely to this very moment! What are you gonna do now?!!!

Start over with Kap being the object of his scorn. It’ll happen eventually. I’m sure there’s another Nate Davis he’ll fall in love with when Kap stops meeting his expectations.

      • AngusinCanada says:

        Rocket,
He’s so invested now in Kaep, I suspect that he’d for sure go down with the ship named Denial if Kaep craps the bed.

      • 23jordan/ I told you so! says:

        Grumpy,

I’m already there! Lol. Thanks bro. Hilarious!

        Rocket,

Anybody but captain Alex Doublecheckdown Smith. You know that. I’m ready for Kap to throw 2 picks and 3 touchdowns this weekend. I’m willing to accept that with a win. Peyton Manning won with those stats last week. o complaints from me. The QB I knew that needed to be replaced by anybody has been replaced. Eat your heart out rocket!

        Augusin,

You mad Bro?? Alex is DONE. I told you so!

  12. Neal says:

    Jeff Fisher just said darnet.

    • Mark says:

Jeff Fisher is well educated, so I believe that he would’ve said “darn it”…

    • Crab15 says:

Neal – Fisher will be “burning the midnight oil” preparing for RoboKap.

I feel for Alex Smith man, he gave it all he had for his team. He won’t slack off, he will be ready if Kap gets injured.

Jim Harbaugh knows 49er history, we are about winning Super Bowls! Winning the NFC West is not good enough. Harbaugh knows you need a stud QB like RoboKap to win Championships.

      • Neal says:

        Crabs,

I agree , it got to be uncomfortable for AS to do the ritual at the start of the game, and meet with the refs and opposing players. I do have empathy for him in certain situations. But he still has a better life then the rest of us working stiffs.

  13. ninermd says:

My gut said loyalty would prevale. What century do I live in? I didn’t think Alex smith did anything to lose his job, but I do see how ck came in and took it. Cheers to a 49ers Superbowl!!!!!! We have one hell of a backup/starter going forward. Whhhheeeeewwwww!

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

      Md,

For the last time. I TOLD YOU SO! You gotta start having more faith in these games bro. It’s RoboKap time. Let the best man win, and he did. That quote came from you bro.

      • Neanderthal Offense says:

23 no doubt. The best man won. I’ve also stated that ck was a better player than smith. I just Didnt see JH after all they have been through turn on smith like this. Sure ck is better but I thought he would let smith play and hang himself with comparison. I like me some CK. but if he had picked smith I would have been cool
With that also. Because CK would be waiting. Now if ck falters “which I can’t see” then smith comes back in and plays solid. It’s all about our defense and with ck blowouts could start being a norm. Wheeeew

      • ninermd says:

How about just good Ol CK7

      • Crab15 says:

Neander – Sorry bro, I vote RoboKap.

      • ribico says:

Wait, wasn’t the knock on Smith was that he was robotic. And now you want to curse CK with that description, even as a Knickname? No way!

      • ribico says:

In Kaepernicks honor, every word beginning with “N” now gets a “K” in front of it.

      • ribico says:

La-La, I didn’t say when I was season ticket holder ;) It was all during the Patrick Ewing era. Saw some pretty incredible games during that time.

Your favorite basketball team is named after short pants.

      • ribico says:

And they played their best ball in the era of short pants too.

2012 team is looking up. ‘Melo is actually playing some D.

      • Grimey9er says:

the NBA is definitely better when the knicks are good. But with the Nets in Brooklyn Spike Lee’s gonna have a dilemma.

      • Randy says:

    • DClark says:

That was a +1 to md’s comment, Jordan’s comment was utter drivel as usual

    • Jack Hammer says:

“I didn’t think Alex smith did anything to lose his job,”

You’re right MD, Alex didn’t. Kaepernick got a shot, and proved he is better.

      • fesnyc says:

for what its worth i’d offer that in retrospect, it was the NYG game which put the doubt in Harbaugh’s mind about Alex. Alex has improved, but the offense hasn’t had quite the oomph to get past a team we may face in the playoffs again.

some folks look at last years NFC Champ game as one where Alex/we were one play from going to the SuperBowl. I look at it as we were 2-3 third down conversions away, which didn’t happen. Kaep has the upside which might bring the offense to its potential.

      • ninermd says:

Yep. I think ck just took it. There is no secret ck had the explosiveness Smith doesn’t. Like I’ve said. Smith is like the station wagon that isn’t pretty but pretty reliable. Ck is like the sports car. High octane, glamorous and will get you there in style. And by there I mean the Superbowl. BUT these two rides get nowhere without the most important part. The defense aka the all weather tires on the ride. Wheeew! GO NINERS!!!!

      • Neal says:

He played 4 bad to below average games this season, his ceiling was about 5 feet and he hit it.

    • Adam says:

Did you happen to listen to espn radio today? Same things you’re saying. Harbaugh was getting roasted.

  14. Spaceborn says:

On a serious note, I think we need to come up with one nickname for Kaepernick, all this Kap, Kaptain Kap, Kappy, Kapper, RoboKap, Transformer, CK7 is confusing! LOL

  15. bayareafanatic says:

So I guess Grants Poll was effective and accurate.
309 wanted CK as the starting QB and 109 for Smith.
Here is my question. If you are the Niners what do you do with Smith now? Do you attempt to renegotiate his contract as a back up and keep him?

Do you give him his outright release after we win the superbowl so that he can search for a new team on his own?

Or do you leave his contract as is and pay him his roster bonus for next year?

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

      Bay,

Pardon he expression. But it’s finally time for Smith to kick rocks bro. It’s a new era. We have no time to look back. Tell Alex that he’ll be free in February, right before that $1 million roster bonus is due to be paid. He will be in San Diego next year, if Norv Turner doesn’t get fired.

    • Mark says:

Do you honestly think Smith will be willing to stay as a backup to Kaepernick? If they don’t release him, he asks to be released.

      • Grant Cohn says:

And go where? Anyone that would sign him would also draft his replacement. The 49ers is the best spot for him.

      • Neanderthal Offense says:

        @Grant

You’ve been pretty on top of the pulse until this comment. The punters on ESPN this morning addressed the top-2 QB FA acquisitions this off-season, in the following order:

        1. Alex Smith
        2. Michael Vick

For whatever it’s worth, I think you’re right, but I don’t think that’s what Alex will do. He’ll want to go out and start fresh, show the league that his success was his and not Harbaugh’s (bad idea). If there’s another coach out there who is smart enough to tap into Smith’s capacity to play a controlled gameplan, he might even succeed for a while.

      • AngusinCanada says:

He’s only 28 Grant, and after several years of struggle and unfortunate situations, has for the last 26 games, been a very, very successful starting QB.

You have consistently underestimated his talent. He’ll be a starter in this league for years to come.

      • Mark says:

Probably San Deigo, but who knows. If he’s released, he can go anywhere. I hear they need a QB in AZ…

For the first time in his career, Alex has actually let his anger show in regards to his treatment by the team. He has been having a career year and he’s been benched for his backup. I truly believe that he’s finally had enough and there’s no way he’s willing to become Colin Kaepernick’s backup.

And, honestly, can you really blame him?

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Angus,

If they do let him go, it will be interesting to see the market for his services. We all know they weren’t hot last offseason, but the argument has always been that it was due to everyone knowing he was coming back here. We might finally get an answer on that…

      • Spaceborn says:

Grant, I think that there would be teams that at least would offer Smith a shot to compete to be a starter. But I don’t believe any are going to just give him a starter’s job. Kansas City, Jacksonville, AZ are probably going to draft QB’s, but if they could get Smith cheap by offering at least a shot to beat out a rookie, he might be willing to take a chance and leave. All you have to do is look at his face on the sidelines to see he might not be feeling like the good soldier any longer.

      • rocket says:

I’m guessing they will just let him walk as a FA and he’ll have about 4 or 5 teams interested in his services. Ideally they’d keep him and trade him for something, but I doubt they’ll do that.

      • Adam says:

He had nowhere to go because he waited too long. The 2013 draft is weak. He’ll get a shot somewhere. Rivers will stay in San Diego, Norv may be gone. I agree with the espn guys, Palmer was a waste in Oakland, should have stayed retired. Smith might be a good fit there.

    • Spaceborn says:

For the team, probably try to renogotiate his contract. If he is unwilling to do that and wants a release (I think he will) then let him move on and draft another QB.

    • Calistoga Red says:

My gut says drop him – I’m sure with his performance from the last season and a half he’ll get some offers and JH probably respects him enough to let him walk and try to get a starting gig elsewhere if he’s not going to start here.

      • bayareafanatic says:

If that scenario is correct, do we draft another QB and let Tolzien be #2 or do we bring in a vet like Hasselbeck to be the insurance?

      • Neanderthal Offense says:

If you say Hasselbeck ONE MORE TIME I’m gonna friggin blow my gasket!!!

“We Want the Ball, We’re Gonna Score” … derrrrr … I mean throw a game-ending Pick-6 and lose the SB

        What an incorrigible loser!!!

      • Grimey9er says:

How about bringing back Josh Johnson and he and Tolzien can battle for the backup spot.

      • Jack Hammer says:

That’s funny!!! Thanks for the laugh Grimey.

      • rocket says:

I’d guess they will draft somebody. Start their own QB factory the way the Packers used to. There really won’t be a need for a vet with Kap and Tolzien both in year 3.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Rocket,
        agreed.

      • Grimey9er says:

I know it’s funny but I was kinda being serious. He’s a young veteran, has experience in the system, Harbaugh likes him, and he’d be cheaper than Alex.

      • Jack Hammer says:

He’s a young veteran with experience, but he is not very good Grimey.

    • D Rogue says:

My bet is Alex will be released after the season, prior to April 1, 2013.

    • Jack Hammer says:

      Bay,

I think they will pick up his salary and keep him around next year.

Smith is a proven winner in this system, a solid team guy, and quite frankly better than any other option out there to back up Kaep.

      • Mark says:

        Jack,
Do you really think he’ll be willing to stay?

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Jack,
Balke is pretty CAP savvy. I don’t think they leave his contract as is. It would make him the highest paid backup in the league.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Mark,

        It isn’t Smith’s decision.

        Bay,

Sure, but if you add up all of the salaries of their 3 QB’s it would still be in the bottom half of the league.

      • ribico says:

        >>It isn’t Smith’s decision.

No, but under the circumstances, I sure the team would be lenient if Smith asked out.

      • Crab15 says:

bay – I’m glad you mentioned Trent Baalke. This guy deserves more credit. He’s been tremendous!

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

        Jack,

WRONG, a $7 mil backup making $6.3 more than the starter. Alex Smith renegotiated for waaaaaay less or he kicks rocks!

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Jordan,

Since you reached out to me here, can you shut up about predicting this change? During training camp you were predicting that Josh Johnson would beat out Kaepernick. How did that prediction work out big guy?

As for you saying that I am wrong, I’ll take my chances.

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

        Jack,

If you don’t want anyone second guessing your position, don’t post it here. Post it on your beginners blog. You won’t have to worry about me going over there to read it or second guess it. How bout that??

      • BigP says:

        Jack,
There is now way they pick up Smith’s salary. There is absolutely now way they pay Smith more to be a backup than they pay Kaepernick to start unless Smith is willing to sign for the veteran minimum, which is still more then Kaepernick’s base for next season. That is valuable cap space.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        BigP,

We’ll see how it plays out. You are more than welcome to tell me I am wrong once I am.

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Big P,

Lets see if jack tells you to shut up for stating the same thing to him that I did. You pay your backup 6 million more than your starter. And he actually has his own blog. I guess bloggers are entitled to a brain cramp every once in a while.

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Jack,

You forgot to tell big p to shut up. Respect all not one. Mr blogger.

      • BigP says:

        Jack,
They will not pay Smith 8 million to backup Kaepernick next year, I’ll say you are wrong right now. That makes absolutely no sense from a team or cap standpoint. I can’t believe you even entertain that thought.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Jordan,

I didn’t tell you to shut up for disagreeing with me. I told you to shut up because you look like an ass for continuing to say “I told you so” when you didn’t.

You spent the entire offseason telling everyone that Johnson would beat out first Kaepernick, then Smith. The only reason you got on Kaepernick’s band wagon was because your boy got shipped out of town and Kaepernick was left as the backup.

      • Neal says:

Past is the Past, the Niners NOW have a QB and let’s destroy the lambs and make them lamb chops on Sunday, glad the game is a early one. I expect our defense to be lights out.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        BigP,

From a team standpoint it makes perfect sense. There won’t be a better backup QB option available.

From a CAP standpoint, even paying that money to Smith they are well below the average paid for their QB’s.

Like I said, let’s see how it plays out. If I am wrong I will have no trouble admitting it.

      • msclemons67 says:

It would be pretty cold-blooded for the 49ers to pick up Smith’s option and force him to stay as a backup.

Then again, Harbaugh and Baalke are ruthless.

I think Smith’s 2013 salary is earmarked for resigning important players. They have to make room for Goldson somewhere.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        msc,

Beside Goldson, who do you see as important to re-sign?

        Delanie Walker
        Isaac Sopoaga
        Ricky Jean Francois

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Jack,

Shut up should NEVER have come out your mouth to me. You have a habit of coming at me incorrectly since you came on this blog. Most times, when I want even addressing you. I don’t forget, I remember it like it was an hour ago. I’d be asking myself,”what’s up with this guy?” You did it again today.
So it’s up to you to tell me what to say and when to say it. You’re a wanna be blogger now. Protect your reputation and stay out of the fray. You got carried away today. You were out of line for your post. You’re a blogger, you don’t like what I post, ignore it. You’re supposed to know that. Maybe you should ask grant about that.

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Jack,

How the hell do you know why I got behind Kap. I didn’t do it week one. I did it after I saw him come into games abet a few snaps. What the hell are you talking about. See, now you got your foot in your mouth. Go back and look at the blog in week 1. See what I was saying about Kap. Nothing. How are you going to tell me what I think and why I think it. You’re not that damn good Jack. As a matter of fact, you’re dead wrong!

      • Msclemons67 says:

@Jack unfortunately I think Delanie will get more on the market than Baalke will be willing to pay. The sudden popularity of tight ends in the league will up his price.

Soap appears to be on the downside. RJF might take his spot next year.

At some point next year the 49ers should extend Aldon the way they did Bowman this year. That won’t be cheap. Anthony Davis is also entering a contract year I believe and I’m sure he’ll squeal like a child if he doesn’t get a good offer (couldn’t resist).

There are a lot better places that $8 million could be used other than back up QB.

      • Jack Hammer says:

So what do you see for backup QB msc?

Move Tolzien to backup and draft a QB for the 3 spot?

      • Msclemons67 says:

@Jack Matt Moore perhaps? He played nearly as well as Alex down the stretch last year. I’m not sure of his contract status in Miami. The thing is, I think Harbaugh and this defense can do ok with just about anyone for a few regular season games. I wouldn’t want to see a Moore level QB in the playoffs obviously.

I have no idea about Tolzien. I’ve only seen him play against guys who are now bagging groceries.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        msc,

Moore could be an option for a couple games, it will be interesting to watch it unfold.

This St Louis game will be interesting. If Amendola is struggling with his foot they should be able to shut them down.

      • Msclemons67 says:

Not to knock CK or Alex, but the QB might be irrelevant in this game. The defense got embarrassed big time in the last meeting. I think this might be a painful game for the Lambs’ offense. The 49ers D has been inconsistent this year but when they’re on they are as dominant as last year.

I think they’ll be on in this rematch. Hope Bradford has life insurance.

      • Jack Hammer says:

I tend to agree. The entire key for St Louis is Amendola because he can help negate the pass rush for the quick throw. He was held out of practice today.

    • Mr. Automatic says:

Closing time. You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here. He won’t be back next season.

  16. Faith71 says:

Neanderthal, don’t think Colin’s going to be curling into a ball for what you and the other Smithers opine about how he stacks up against FAR LESS TALENTED former Niner QB’s.
The ONLY important decision came from the QB whispering brightest young coach in the NFL that thought HE WAS THE BEST OPTION to get this team where it needs to be.
Smithers remind me of whiners that wanted Joe Montana in there even though Steve Young had won OPOY!
Not comparing these QB’s to those but as the “experts” are saying “The better player plays.” And that’s exactly what’s happening.

  17. Hov says:

Awwwwww Alex please don’t cry don’t get the wrong idea we still luv you your still our precious.

  18. IntelligentAj says:

I like the decision by JH. It sucks to lose your job to injury but that’s how it is. If Colin Kaepernick manages to bring big-play explosiveness without adding turnovers then no one can fault this decision

  19. funkykingston says:

Here are the three things I have a hard time reconciling:

    1. Alex Smith lost his job due to injury. Yes, he’s overly cautious and I was so tired of seeing a 5 yard checkdown on 3rd and 10, but the fact still remains that he was statistically having a very good year and the team was winning but lost his job because he had a concussion.

    2. Kaepernick is clearly more dynamic and a bigger threat as a runner AND a passer.

    3. Smith worried me because he never seemed capable of putting a team on his back and carrying it to a victory. Kaepernick worries me because he’s started all of two games and his inexperience will no doubt result in some rough patches and at the end of the season and the playoffs when the team can least afford them.

Taken together I suppose I’m much more excited to see Kaep start this weekend than I was with Smith. But I can’t help but feel that Alex Smith got unfairly dumped and I don’t feel any more confident about this team’s Super Bowl chances now than I did three weeks ago. But I’d love to be wrong.

    • AngusinCanada says:

Lesson #1 to the players around the league. Don’t tell anybody if you think you’ve got a concussion.

Lesson #1 to the league lawyers. Plan for an increased wave of brain injury lawsuits about a decade or so from now.

      • Fansince77 says:

True. True. And True. Although I think Alex would have reported it all the same because he’s smart. There’s more to life then this game. he’s already rich. He has a life-time ahead of him to do whatever else he wants..

Demon? Definitely not, but Nolan’s first major blunder, yes. Either way the team won’t be officially exercised of his presence until March 23rd.

  21. steelematic says:

Personally i think coach made a good choice. But if i were Alex Smith I would parlaye tthese whole 2 seasons under coach into my biggest payday. Coach made ppl forget Smith was irrealevant for 7 years. Now ppl are helping him fight for his job. I think he shoulld go to the Chiefs. They have the rb wr and te… They just dont have our D. But if Smith is as good as u all say he is he would overcome that into Elite status.

  22. JohnJPDX says:

I am first and foremost a Niner fan. Have been since I lived in SF for our first Super Bowl and the following four. Whoever starts for the team has my undying loyalty. Kaepernick brings a level of excitement I haven’t felt since Steve Young. What I like is I do believe he can win the game in the first qtr/half like we used to do. As he did in the Bears game. GO NINERS!

    • Faith71 says:

Agree completely seeing the NY/GB game was the 1st time in over 15 YEARS that’s looked at two “contending” teams and thought “You know…… my Niners would make you their little biotch.”
Don’t feel I’m putting the cart before the horse but I’m sooo not afraid of NY at all with CK at the helm and the level of frustration he would bring to their defense.

  23. Neanderthal Offense says:

There’s something disconcertingly cold about CK. He has absolutely no emotion. No joy, no sadness. He is a robot, but I just don’t want to put him next to Peter Weller.

He’s RoboKap and he’s my Quarterback.( Tears in eyes like T.O.)

      • Spaceborn says:

Nah, we need a poll or everybody is going to keep having their own names, which seems endless right now. Maybe I’ll wait and see what name Chris Bergman calls him, he’s pretty good at creating names. ;)

    • steelematic says:

No emotion??? Did u see that man runing wild all over the field after touchdowns and defensive highlights. It was like looking at a young brett favre. please dont go the no emotiin route. this man has plenty of it. Did u expected him to sit in a corner and cry like alex is doing now. is that the emotion u wanna see. get real

    • Jack Hammer says:

As much as outsiders have been impressed with the poise and efficiency Kaepernick has displayed in his two starts — he is 32 of 48 passing for 474 yards and three scores (and a fourth rushing) with only one pick — teammates and coaches are equally excited by his athletic arrogance. From behind his facemask Kaepernick plays with an edge and attitude that’s infectious to those around him.
“On one of my runs he was out there like, ‘Run the hell out of that motherf—–r!’ ” Gore said. “That gets you going, seeing your quarterback out there like that.”

  24. Mad Dog says:

I understand the thinking. Upside is higher. That said, I don’t think Alex Smith sticks around as a backup. He’ll get his agent to ask for a trade either now or at season’s end. 49ers will hold on to him until season’s end in case this plan doesn’t work. Not sure contract status but he won’t be here next year. I don’t blame him. So, hopefully CK takes hold of this thing and looks like the man by season’s end.

      Mad Dog,

Trade deadline has passed. Smith couldn’t get traded if he wanted to. He’s under contract ( Niners option) next year. Niners owe him $1 mil in February and $7.5 million in April, if he’s still on the roster. My opinion is, he won’t be on the roster.

AT and T pro am is in February as well, if he still needs Harbaugh to caddy.

      • Mad Dog says:

Ha ha! Yes on the golf caddy!

Makes sense that he rides out the year because he is stuck then he is gone. Who is the backup next year, Tolzein (sp?) or free agent?

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Josh comes back and fight with Tolzein for the backup job.

      • Spaceborn says:

Mad Dog, do you think anybody is going to want to see another game-manager after watching Kaepernick play? Especially one that can’t throw as deep as Smith? Tolzein might stay as the 3rd, but I just can’t see him as a true back-up. Draft a QB with a similar skill-set as Kaepernick’s and let Harbaugh keep the gun loaded.

      • Mad Dog says:

Spaceborn. No. I agree. Just looking ahead at the logistics of this decisicion. Only thing about drafting another young guy is that that guy won’t want to stay around as a backup to CK. He’ll want his shot. That’s why I think it will be a FA next year and possibly draft another qb down the road. CK is only in his second year.

      • Spaceborn says:

Mad Dog, here are the most notable QB FA’s for 2013. Do you see anybody you think you would want as a starter if Kaepernick got injured?

Campbell, Carr, Gradkowski, Grossman, Jackson, Leftwich, Leinart, Moore, Quinn, and Thigpen.

        Slim pickings as they say.

      • Mad Dog says:

Yes. Nothing good. But Smith will want to leave to start somewhere else. Agreed? Good luck resigning him! He will start elsewhere next year. That leaves drafting another guy that will only be two years behind your starter that hoprefully will start for years to come. Unless it’s a project guy.

    • domingo says:

Yep, Josh comes back and we draft a QB late.

  25. Neanderthal Offense says:

FRANK GORE looks like he just buried his best friend!!!

  26. 5253 says:

Correct decision by Harbaugh and good timing. A full week of preparation for an opponent CK has already gotten a taste of; and a domed, fast-track, well suited to guys like CK, VD, and MM. Neutralize Quinn and Long and we could be looking at a big day offensively. Our defense will play better this time around, too; Amendola is still in a walking boot. If he plays, he won’t be 100%–thus our weakness against slot receivers won’t be exploited. Then the Rams become 1 dimensional with Jackson, which plays to our greatest strength. If my math is correct, a 49er win and Seahawks lose means we clinch the NFC West.

  27. steelematic says:

All this. inexperience crap. Every legit stater in the leauge was inexperienced. You know what creats experience???? Playing…. Its not like hes coming in for brady brees rodgers manning or someone like that. Hes coming in to add life to an offense thats been held down because of the qbs inability to create explosive plays. A qb thatt wants to play it safe. Wich is how u gey a 70% completeion pecentage. Checkdown, not give his players a chance to make plays. One good showing, kap hitting williams on a 45yd strike. After kap made his progression. Smith throws that ball away or takes a sack. Why do i say that, because hes always done it. So inexperience would say leave brety favre with the pack because aaron was inexperienced. Who cares that he took over in the offseason. How did that team do that year? If we wait till next year u wud risk us gling backwards. Kap has proven he can play. Give him the keys Letz all take a ride

  28. bayareafanatic says:

The ONLY attribute that I hope of AS’s that I hope CK can emulate is “toughness”. AS was one tough son of a gun.

  29. La-La Land says:

Coach will draft another QB prospect in 2013, because he is the QB Whisperer. Need to start looking at possibilities for 3rd round-to-UDFA. Possible candidates?

    • Spaceborn says:

I’ve already been stumping for Arkansas’ Tyler Wilson, though he is more likely a 2nd rounder. Or he could be the next Tannehill that moves up. Still, when under Petrino, many draft pundits had him as a possible #1 overall, but Petrino left because he was a bad boy and Wilson’s best three WR’s went to the NFL and he was left with nobody to throw to and he didn’t have a very good year as well as the team who just got killed by LSU last week.

      • La-La Land says:

I’ll take a look at Wilson. We run an offseason draft pick Fantasy League (what else could Niner fans do over the last decade), and we usually start getting serious around the beginning of December.

Funny that Miami decided to draft rather than sign Alex. Tannehill takes chances, Miami got a diamond.

  30. 5253 says:

Mike Sando has an excellent comparison of Kaepernick and Smith’s numbers while under duress. Check out the chart. I can’t help but think these kinds of things must’ve factored into JH’s decision–especially when considering future playoff match-ups against the likes of the New York Giants. The last 6 quarters Alex played against NYG were duress laden and awful.

  31. Grimey9er says:

Sando has an interesting take and stat analysis. kinda matches what my eye-test says with CK7, the kid makes plays. Remember when Alex said Singletary wanted him to make a play and he didn’t know what that meant. Kap knows what it means to make a play.

  32. bayareafanatic says:

After the announcement it was reported that Smith was not available for comment.
Funny neither was DS, Oneniner or Hofer lol. Kidding. Sorry I couldn’t resist.

    • La-La Land says:

Respect the Hofer, he’s one of my favorites, though we don’t agree on AS.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Yeah Hofer is alright. He is the king of alexcuses though. And his backhanded compliments to anyone who threatened his precious got old….

      • 49erGirl says:

I like Hof as well – we disagree, but it’s always been respectful.

Can’t say the same for the other two.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Hofer was last seen reading a Charley Casserly piece on how Kaepernick is a one read and run QB.

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

        Jack,

Good one, but don’t be disrespectful by telling me to shut up bro. Blog owners don’t speak down to people like that dude.

      • Jack Hammer says:

You’re right Jordan. I should have chosen my words better.

That being said, quit acting like you called this when you actually said Kaep would be beaten out by a guy who is not even playing any longer. I told you way back when Johnson first signed that you were wrong, and it played out.

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

        Jack,

Yeah, you read my post from the preseason. However, look at my posts in the last 10 weeks.
Another thing, you can’t tell me what to post or take credit for. You can do that on your blog. Not this one.
Yes, I felt like Josh could beat Kap and Tolzein out. Alex as well. So did Grant. Are you calling him out? No, you’re telling him he called it. You need to continue to be objective and don’t tell people what to say and what not to say . That’s the crap the BS did. Don’t cross the line and I won’t. Don’t tell me what to post and what to take credit for.

      • Jack Hammer/No You Didn't says:

        Ok Jordan. Enjoy.

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

Jack, if you told me that I was wrong then. Great, that was your position but I didn’t tell you to shut up.
Another thing, I don’t remind you of how abrasive and disrespectful you were to myself and others before you started your own blog. People like BS. You corrected that when you started your own blog. It was too late for me, that’s why I’ve only been there once. You reminded me of why today. You were out of bounds bro. By telling me what to post, you’re still out of bounds.

      • Jack Hammer says:

That’s your choice Jordan. Thanks for checking it out.

      • 23jordan/ Jack has a. Blog too, why is he here? says:

        Jack,

I can see that you want to officiate this blog. You should spend more time officiating your own. It could produce more hits.

      • Neanderthal Offense says:

        Jack/Jordo

Both you guys are hard-headed arses. Don’t hold it against one another.

Jack, you can’t speak facts to Jordo. He’ll never acknowledge being wrong, even when faced with evidence of it. That’s your bad for even trying. You should know better.

Jordo, no need to be so belligerent, is there? Are you ALWAYS looking for a fight? This isn’t your blog, either, but you’re coming off like you think you own the place. Just chill.

      • 23jordan/ I told you so! says:

See jack, I can play your game too. better for you not to disrespect if you don’t want to be disrespected.

      • Crab15 says:

23J – We’ve all made crappy predictions in the past. I know I have (I thought Rashaun Woods was going to be a stud receiver).
It’s “what have you done lately that counts” with predictions. :-)

      • 23jordan/ I told you so! says:

        Nea,

Mind your business. You just fell of the meat truck. Nobody voted you the blog moderator. You got involved in this situation a little late. If you don’t know what happened, stay out of it. You might need your own blog as well. We police ourselves up here. We don’t need snitches or peacemakers here. Jack knows what happened and so do I. You, on the other hand don’t. Best you just mind yours and me and Jack will take care of this.

      • 23jordan/ I told you so! says:

        Jack,

Anytime. jack has a Jr. blog. You guys check it out. I don’t mind looking out for my peers! See!

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Sweet! Thanks bro.

      • 49erGirl says:

Crab – you think Rashaun Woods was bad?

I stocked up on Jake Plummer rookie cards because I thought he was going to be waaayyyy better than Peyton Manning.

And now I’m kicking myself for actually admitting that on a football blog….or anywhere else for that matter.

      • La-La Land says:

Ah, Jake “The Snake” Plummer. Still say that if we had drafted him instead of Drunkenmiller, Jake would have had a better career.

      • Crab15 says:

9erGirl – Jake Plummer wasn’t that bad…..Zilch rookie card value though.
The only value those cards have is, maybe you can trade them for your Raider fan hubby’s JaMarcus Russell rookie cards. :)

      • Jack Hammer says:

They are also a great way to make your kid’s bike sound like a motorcycle.

      • Neal says:

Jake Plumber was way better then Jim Drunkmiller and I believe that was the same draft. Plumber was not bad, not a bust.

      • Neanderthal Offense says:

        Jordo

I didn’t fall off any truck. When you go at people on this blog, Jack or whoever else, people laugh at you. It’s sad. Because when you actually break down football, and the team dynamic, like you did up above with Mark, your intelligence and wit come through loud and clear. I’ve been going back and forth with you for a couple of years now, Jordy Jordy Jordy, and it’s good. You know your stuff, except you failed to recognize Kaep had it until it was obvious. I, on the other hand, needed only a day or so after the draft to identify him as Clark Kent.

But I’m the smartest dude in the world.

    • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

      Bay,

That is a classic. I have to tell Grant though. I can cover Hofers drop off, but I can’t hold a candle to BS. The blog is about to take a serious hit on hits. Rumor has it that the Smithers were last seen headed South on 101 in a 1974 station wagon. The one with the makeshift wood on the side panels. Hofer was driving and Claude was riding shotgun. FDM and Ribico in the back seat and BS and Prime in the back area, playing patty cake!! sign on the window said San Diego or Bust! In Alex Smith we trust! Im sorry to report, The Smithers are GONE.

      • domingo says:

        That’s funny.

      • Giant Fan says:

Even though they were rolling in a ’74 station wagon, they still desperately wanted everyone to believe it was a 2013 Porsche Cayenne. Sadly the old wagon couldn’t even haul its own weight and was sent to the scrap heap.

        And he proves my point.

Just because I haven’t been commenting till recently doesn’t mean I haven’t been here, I’ve been reading this blog since Maiocco was writing it.

Oddly enough, I’ve never actually called you a name except your handle, the only one who’d been name calling here is you, 23jordan.

Oh I’m not joking though I am serious, I hope you get a terminal illness and your body wastes away around you and you aren’t able to do anything for yourself anymore. Your entire world becomes a dirty crap stained hospital bed and you live each day crapping and pissing on yourself, getting bed sores, while successively your limbs get amputated as the disease progresses. Then all that’s left is a human peg no arms and legs just a flabby fat sack that has lost any void of humanity. All during this your family and love ones will slowly but surely become more and more distant from you, the love they once showed becomes pity then outright resentment of you and your needs. The end culminates in a long slow death in a hospital bed alone covered in your own crap and piss, gasping for breath in the dark. No one comes to visit you the nurse doesn’t even like being around you because you piss and moan so much and while you are dying they are on the computer doing Facebook or twitter, your death is nothing to them.

Hope Cap holding that ball behind is head for 2 seconds before releasing it continues to be unnoticed by rushers. Alex you are most Americans! Gone through alot and persevered. Not fair man. Hold your kid close to your heart. Thats what matters most. 9ers 4 ever!

    • ninermd says:

What was that jibberish about? Put a band aid on that bleeding heart. It’s a game and if you can’t play as well as the next guy. You lose your job.

Spokane – The 49ers have not been to the Super Bowl in 17 years! The proud 49er faithful have been shafted for 17 years. That’s not fair!
Do you want Dennis Erickson, Nolan or Singletary back?
Have you considered jumping ship to Seahawks? It’s only about a 4 hour drive to Seattle right?
      In Harbaugh I trust!….Now I’m done

    • La-La Land says:

Spokane, we’ll give you Alex for Russell. Seriously.

  36. matt says:

I must of read some entirely different meaning into what Harbaugh said than everyone else here.
He said Kaepernick is the starter for St. Louis. He didn’t name him the starter to the end of the year. I think Harbaugh is planning on going back to the idea that inserting both QBs in a game is a good idea. That worries me.
I’m excited for Kaepernick, but you have to make a choice and stick with at this point in the season.

    • ninermd says:

Good read. I do think he has to name the starter from here out. Although I think he did today, it should be tagged starter for the season.

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

        NInerMd, Matt,

Kaepernick is not going to lose that job. He will make mistakes. However, he will make far more great plays than he will mistakes. All the receivers need to know is that if they want a chance to make a play, if they can’t, just make sure the DB doesn’t make a play either. Simple as that.

      • ninermd says:

All true 23 but I think it would help out with the locker room would benefit also if someone was named the starter. Not just for one game but for the season. Harbaugh needs to come out and say. Ck is our starter until he loses the job. At least.

      • 23jordan/I told you so. says:

        Md,

He’s still trying to protects Smiths feelings because he knows that he needs Smith on board. He can’t afford to lose Smith mentally. I don’t like it either but maybe the team knows more than we do.
Smith is fragile and he’s hurt right now. JH knows what he’s doing. We just have to trust the process and look for the results on the field. We all want the same thing. Ring # 6!!!

    • 49erGirl says:

      Matt,

I believe Harbaugh has made the decision to stick with Kaep for the rest of the season – he knows better than anyone that a revolving door for your starting QB’s is no good for a team. He’s still praising Alex and saying he’s a starting QB out of respect for what he’s done for the team to date.

He’ll never say “We’re sticking with Kaep because he’s better than Smith” – it’s not his style.

The only things I’ve figured out about Harbaugh over the last year and a half are: He’s a hell of a coach, he defends and protects his players, he will NEVER throw a team meber under the bus verbally – even after they’re gone (remember Braylon Edwards’ departure?), and his actions always speak much louder than his words.

  37. Sean in Canada says:

Hopefully this drama is done. Congrats to Kaep.

  38. 49erGirl says:

Looks like I’m a couple hours late to the party – damn this job, it’s getting in the way of my football!

Our local sportscaster made a statement last night that I thought was interesting – he said that the 49ers sent out a press release letting them know that CK would be available for pre-game interviews today, but that AS would not. Said to “read into that what you will”. That was the first time I let myself get my hopes up that Harbs was going to make the move to Kaep, because up until that point, I really thought he was going to stick with Smith.

I feel bad for Alex, but am excited to see a new era starting in 49er land with CK7!

No predictions for the score on Sunday, but I have a feeling the Niners will come up with a game plan that won’t even let the Rams sniff a tie.

as for AS future….i am kind of wondering more about Groman future…if he does take a head coaching job somewhere else that doesn’t have a QB per se maybe AS can tag along with him …. but if Groman goes to Ariz i doubt niners would release AS … AS is between a rock a a hard place since he doesn’t control his contract…and he probably should have realized that the contract he sign was clearly not in his favor…

I am sure AS has hurt feelings….can’t blame him…..I would be…

Roman is the next interesting storyline….after the playoff run ….

    • Mark says:

I’m not convinced Kaepernick will rout the Rams. I have the feeling that Jeff Fisher has his number and if so, other teams will take note.

Remember, in almost three quarters, Kaepernick couldn’t beat the Rams, the worst team in the division.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Mark,
the Smithers are stuck in traffic. I can call them and have them stop and wait for you if you’d like. No negative talk like that.
We are all on board the Kap train brother. Lets support this kid.
What Kap did was nothing short of spectacular against the Rams. He came in and was down. In a divisional game. He came in cold and took no extra reps during the week. No game planning, nothing.
He brought his team back and his defense and special teams failed.
The drama is over Smither…. Take a hike.
        Here’s a line from Matt Barrows…..

“Then there’s this stat from ESPN: Kaepernick has six 30-plus yard pass plays on 74 attempts. Smith has six 30-plus yard plays on 217 attempts.”

        And buh bye…..

      • Grimey9er says:

        Mark,
Actually the 9ers were down 14-7 when Kaep came in and they finished 24-24. So with Kaep the 9ers were +7 on the Rams. Just sayin.

      • Mark says:

Bay, since when is discussing an observation about the last time Kaepernick played the Rams negative.

What Kaepernick did against the Rams was barely adequate. He took over from Smith just after #11 had thrown a touchdown and played catch-up the entire game. In fact, he hasn’t had to come from behind yet. And don’t say that it’s because he’s the second coming of Montana and Young all rolled into a #7 jersey. He’s had incredible help for the defense.

We’re all entitled to differences of opinion. Just because I haven’t found a taste for the Kaepernick Kool•Ade™ doesn’t mean that my opinions aren’t valid.

In most of the posts I’ve made on this blog, I’ve said how much I like Kaepernick and that I think he’s the future of this team. I’m just not sure he’s ready to be the unquestioned starter.

And, apparently, neither is Harbaugh, otherwise he would’ve named him as the starter for the rest of the season.

      • Grimey9er says:

“He took over from Smith just after #11 had thrown a touchdown and played catch-up the entire game. In fact, he hasn’t had to come from behind yet. ”

Contradict yourself much? In fact, the 9ers were down 24-21 with less than 2 min left and Kaep drove them to a game tying field goal.

Smith has enjoyed help from that incredible defense as well. It’s the main reason for his 19-5-1 record.

      • 23jordan/ I told you so! says:

        Mark,

This is 3 starts and counting. He is the starter for the rest of the season. As long as he continues to do what he’s done so far. You apparently don’t agree with the move. Don’t worry, it will take care of itself.

      • DS94everXev says:

        grimey

The rule (on the blog) from last year is that driving the team to a game tying/winning FG doesn’t count.

  39. JDilla says:

Wished Harbaugh had just announced a starter for the rest of the season, but as long the players are satisfied either way, it’s cool with me. I still think the bigger story is the loss of Hunter. It will be tough to replace his production the rest of the season and was hoping to rest Gore before the playoffs. Hopefully Hampton can be that guy because I’m not really high on LMJ even if he is activated. Time for Dixon to prove he deserved to make the team.

Just got the news. Good for CK, now maybe this mess will go away.

You know what’s hilarious? After Kaep became our starter we started seeing all these supposed first time posters on this blog in support of Alex Smith. Yeah right like it isn’t the usual 4-5 Smithers.

      Fourth,

Crazy part is, they are all gone now. I knew I’d be the last man standing today. I had to be! everybody else is hung over. I told grant that he’s gonna lose 200 hits a day. I hope he can stand it! Lol

I think BS worked overtime today just to stay away from the blog.
I know because I saw a martian like midget waving a conley’s furniture sign on the corner. Really energetic little bugger. As I turned the corner, I saw #11 etched into it’s converse with a sharpie marker.
        It was BS…..

seriously, u could take a higher road and help mitigate the derisive positions u have posed on this blog….

First and foremost; I have never been a big Alex Smith fan (as many already know).
But I will remember him as being an integral part of the 49ers resurgence and for making his own personal journey back to respectability.

And although I still have a sense of uneasiness over the circumstances surrounding the transition, I must admit that it is becoming more clear to me that the methodical phasing out of Alex Smith actually started about 5 months ago.

Yes, it was about that time that Harbaugh and Co went to S.Carolina in the still of the night wearing hoodies to hide their identities and watch Payton Manning work out.

Harbaugh denied any serious interest, but I knew better and felt at the time that Harbaugh had stumbled on ‘the inconvenient truth’ : Alex Smith’ days as a 49er were numbered.

I stand on my position that CK is the better QB. But the transition lacked honor IMO.
Having said that, I know that CK7 will not disappoint the 49er faithful and will have a great career that begins NOW!

I thought about how some fans (like myself) may question Harbaugh’ decision, but I also know that CK7 will continue to carve defenses and eventually make Harbaugh look like a genius.

So as the CK7 era begins,
    I need to say,
Thank you, Alex Smith for your faithful and loyal contributions to the 49ers.

      AES,
nicely put. And as I said in another post earlier today, I admire AS’s toughness. One thing that could not be denied.
The poor guy was picked number one overall in a year where there were no clear cut first rounders. Unfortunately he was always held to that expectation.
We all knew they were searching to replace him. The second they began integrating CK into the offense to get his feet wet, the writing was on the wall.
For all the Smithers that wanted to protect protect protect, know that the Niners invested a lot of money in weapons this year. Smith’s inability to fully utilize those weapons, sealed his fate….

Duke is actually in North Carolina.

      AES,

Damn near made me cry! We were having a party before you got here! Lol. I don’t drink but here’s a coke! Lol

    • jgwindsor says:

i concur….but even though the niner staff checked out PM i would have to say JH had no interest in bring PM on a team where JH wanted to run the TE power centric offense ….. PM wanted too much control over the offense.. just my opinion

  43. undercenter says:

Hof, Claude, Adam, Rocket, and others will be back. Why wouldnt they? And they wont come back with other names. You all take this too seriously with all your character assinations and thats on both sides of the AS issue. Dont understand it, Dont want to understand it. I the Smither that I am will be here. I will continue to root for AS and hope he wins every game he plays – well except against the Niners.

    • 23jordan/ I told you so! says:

      Under,

You see that’s the thing. We don’t take it that seriously. They left because of the decision, we didn’t. I know Josh Johnson beat out Scott Tolzein in the preseason. For all my bragging about how josh would make the team, he got cut and I was right here. I took all the criticism, all the jokes. I take as well as I give. They still razz me today but I’m still here.

So in reality, they are the ones who take it too seriously. I’m sure at some point they will come back. They just didn’t want to hear from me today. Under, you get what you give. You’ve never disrespected me, I’ve never disrespected you. Even though we don’t often agree, we give respect. So we’re not mad at them for not being here. We named them Smithers for a reason. You’re here, so clearly, you’re not a certified Smither.

To close, the blog is enjoyment. I take more insults than anyone here. I take it in stride. I know those guys are hurt, but they will get over it. Or they may be waiting for Kap to fail so they can say, ” I TOLD YOU SO!”

I feel sometimes that I stand up here and talk to you, and I can read your eyes. Maybe you think I’m holding back or not giving you something that’s not there. I’ve given you everything. I’ve explained it very well.
I love the way Harbaugh handles the disgusting vampire that the press is. I feel like sometimes the press in a way feels like they have to be the stars and the important ones, nope sorry press people you are nothing you do none of the work all you do is ask stupid questions fabricate stories and piss off the people that do all the work, you are a nuisance and Harbaugh deals with you guys exactly how he should.

  46. DClark says:

I like to put forth a hypothetical scenario. What happens if on Sunday the niners win say 12-7 but kap lays an egg, say 9/17 for 122 yards no td’s 2ints. firstly what does jh do? He’s spent the last two weeks preaching the hot hand theory, are far as i can see, based on that history he would have no choice but to start Alex the following week.
This game is so much more important to kaep that any of the others and for the niners too, we could end up with a real mess on our hands,
It would also lead to the apocalypse in here too, jordo would have to find a new man crush, others would be spitting froth about smith being benched in the first place, and we would probably see the birth of the term colexcuses too.
For all our sakes i pray that Kaep plays lights out this week. the unholy mess an egg would create might just blow our season out of the water.
