Carlos Rogers has given up short passes at a high rate this season.
He’s allowing a 70.6 percent catch rate – 21st- highest in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus. In 2011, he allowed a 52.8 percent catch rate, which was 26th-lowest in the NFL.
Rogers is getting beaten more often, but he’s allowing just 8.5 yards per completion – almost five yards per completion lower than last season. He seems to have been conceding the short passes to take away the deep ones.
Last season, he was a shutting down flankers and slot receivers by himself at times. He isn’t shutting them down this season, but he isn’t getting beaten badly, either.
MIDTERM GRADE: C.

This is the first grade i disagree with you on. Rogers is playing the D fangio wants him to and a C grades means to me he is better than half of the corners in the league and worse than approx half the corners in the league. I do’nt see that at all with 32 teams starting 2 to 3 cb’s that gives you approx around 81 cb’s who either start or play the vast majority of the defensive plays. I really do’nt believe there are 40 better cb’s in the league. maybe 10 to 12. again using the eye test i would give him a solid B down from an A+ last yr
Interesting way to put it, but a C doesn’t mean half the CBs are better, and half are worse. Most CBs end up playing on a similar level with each other, with the exceptions of some of the elite ones, and some of the terrible ones. I’d say Rogers is playing on average with most of the DBs in the league. He’s not playing at an elite level, and he isn’t getting burned deep all day either.
The team as a whole is giving up too much short/quick stuff, which has made them prone to being dinked and dunked. AZ had one good drive, that really should not have happened. I understand not getting beaten deep, but they need to work on the underneath stuff… and screens.
My choice for the first 49er i would choose in an expansion drat would be Iupati. In his 3rd year he is possible the best guard in the nfl. Guard is a position that lends itself to a very very very long careers and lastly great teams are built from the inside out.
Iupati is a great player but guard just isnt a position that is coveted by many teams in the league. Just look at the draft and player salaries. LT, CB, DE, and of course QB are of more value.
@ Grant:
I tend to agree with coach. If Rogers is indeed conceding short passes to take away the longer ones, that sounds like coaches’ instructions to me. Given that the 49ers’ reduced pass rush has been combined with a 47 yards/game reduction in passing yards allowed this year, I have a hard time finding much fault with anyone in the secondary.
Also, are you using the PFF numbers for Rogers? David Fucillo at Niners Nation has raised a question about their accuracy, at least for the Arizona game: http://www.ninersnation.com/2012/10/31/3581284/49ers-vs-cardinals-chris-culliver-tarell-brown-control-arizona Although I have no way of determining whether he observation has any merit, I found it worth noting.
Another reason to love the 49ers’ cornerbacks: They don’t miss tackles. Rogers and Brown have combined to miss 1 tackle in 50 attempts thus far this season. Rogers hasn’t missed a tackle in 20 attempts. That probably helps to explain low number of yards/completion he is giving up.

The news isn’t so good for Whitner.
Whitner doesn’t wrap up, he’s mainly interested in laying a hit on the ball carrier with no effort at tackling.
Patrick Willis is the best player on this 49er team followed closely by Vernon Davis. But because of his age and salary I think Aldon Smith would be chosen first in an expansion draft.
Agreed.
