The 49ers don’t list Mario Manningham as a starter, but he is definitely the No.2 wide receiver behind Michael Crabtree.
At times, Manningham has seemed like the best receiver on the team. He’s short and skinny, but he can get open better than any other 49er. Greg Roman calls roughly five passes a game for Manningham, and he has only dropped one pass.
He is the best receiver on the team at beating press coverage. He “crosses over” cornerbacks at the line of scrimmage, makes them miss when they try to jam him. He could be a big weapon against the Seahawks’ big, pressing cornerbacks – Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner – who shut down the Niners’ wide receivers a few weeks ago when Manningham was out with a shoulder injury.
Manningham is an explosive deep-threat, but he’s only averaging 9.9 yards per catch – four yards per catch less than his career average. The 49ers have not used him to his full potential yet.

Manningham was the 3rd string receiver in New Jersey and he really hasn’t moved up as a 49er. To be fair, this is not a WR friendly offense.
I think Baalke made a good move with this signing. Manningham is essentially the same as Josh Morgan but $4 million cheaper. Trent seems to have a good feel for value.
Manningham was a great signing considering the money. He is slowly becoming a bigger part of the passing game and is seemingly always wide open when the ball comes his way meaning he is an excellent route runner.
Off topic: Holy crap Doug Martin. He’s got Barry Sanders style eyes in the back of his head.

If Jerry Rice was on this team, he would probably get a B-, maybe 2 touchdowns in 8 games. Not alot of opportunities. That has been proven with VD use.

DS, I have learned early on that posters like Neal, 23welcher, Bay, and some others that its all about them speaking in absolutes and making blanket statements.
It really is just a frustration that this new era of 49er football does not resemble the traditonal one employed by Walsh, Eddie D, and others back in the 80′s. They simply cannot and will not appreciate the style of play this new regime is orchestrating.
Think about this. For the last 8 years we have been below .500, never made the playoffs, were at one point the laughing stock of the league. Now that we have solidified our cap situation, drafting good players, and winning mind you, none of this is releavant because of one player.
Now ask yourself, what fan would not hold out some hope in that this organization has finally got it right and that they are winning ball games? Even when you mention the record over the past 2 years, its whiffed at like, not good enough.
If its not entertaining and the QB does not meet their agenda of how to win, then it cannot be good enough. Insted, the results show otherwise but that in in itself, is still not good enough.

Jim Pluckett has won 2 Super Bowls and he is not in the Hall of Fame, because most of his career like your boy toy he was not very good, until he became a Raider later in his career, he won’t be in the Hall of Fame anytime soon or probably never. Take that in your Kool-Aid and drink it.
How do you know that Plunkett will not make it to the HOF? He was a superbowl MVP in 1980, won it twice, and is the perfect story of rags to riches and excatly the kind of player the hall welcomes.

He has not played in 30 years, and it is very hard to get into the Hall, unlike basketball. I never hear a word that he is being considered, he struggled most of his career, not really a candidate. Also why is Tom Flores not in the Hall of Fame winning 2 Super Bowls, same with George Seifert, I doubt either of them getting in. It would of happen already.
Neal there are a lot of players who have not been inducted in the HOF that should be. Its a long process and when one of the criteria is voting, it just adds to the process.
Guys like Cris Carter, Karl Mecklenburg,Warren Sapp,Tim Brown, Andre Reed, John Randle, Shannon Sharpe, Roger Craig, Charles Haley, they are potentially worthy and some might disagree. Thats why its never a foregone conclusion that it will or wont happen.

Secondly I am not going to root against the Niners, you dummy. Lastly I will bet you this that AS will not have 3 great games in a row. He was efficient last week, and he has not proved yet to have great 3 games in a row. Now great for AS, is 15 -22 and 212 yards. We know he is no Andrew Luck.
I think AS has a connection growing with MM. He is a lot better with him in the lineup.

I’ve liked MM since his day’s at Michigan. I have also wondered why he has not been able to crack a starting lineup. I believe he did have a stint as a starter in NY, but that was short-lived.
In any case MM has a penchent for finding the open gaps and excels at making the highlight film catch every now and again.
I would like to see him on the field more often and also see AS take some shots and give him the opp to make some plays.
MM may yet prove to be our best off season signing as he works himself into an offensive rhythm.
I know that the Run game is our bread and butter, but how about showing a few 3 set WR’ with Crabtree, RM, and MM a little more?
Developing and honing this WR set into the offense would be profitable in case we fall behind in a game.
