Rams-49ers live blog: Overtime

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for overtime of the 49ers Week 10 home game against the St. Louis Rams. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis.

4:35 The Rams win the toss and they will receive the ball.

4:37 Pead doesn’t fumble as he returns the kickoff to the Rams 18 yard line.

4:38 Bradford throws deep on first down. Amendola beats Rogers, catches the ball and runs all the way to the SF 2 yard line, but the play comes back because of a St. Louis illegal formation penalty. Roger Saffold didn’t report eligible. That’s the second time the Rams have done that. It’s first and 15 at the Rams 13.

4:42 On third and 1, Bradford play fakes, has all the time in the world to throw and throws it right to Ahmad Brooks, but he drops it. The Rams have to punt. Ginn returns it to the SF 40. If the 49ers can score a field goal, they win.

4:47 Kaepernick gains 15 yards on a designed run to make it first and 10 at the Rams 25. The 49ers are in Akers’ range.

4:49 Gore loses three yards on second and nine. Now it’s third and 12 at the Rams’ 27.

4:50 Gore runs up the middle for four yards. Akers is on the field to attempt a 41-yard field goal from the left hash.

4:50 And he pushed it wide left. Oh my goodness. The Rams take over at their 31 yard line.

4:53 Bradford completes a 9 yard pass to Gibson for a first down, and Jackson follows that up with a 7-yard run to bring the ball to midfield.

4:54 Bradford completes a 10-yard pass to Amendola on third and four, and on the next play Jackson runs around the right end for an 8-yard game. Second and two at the SF 34.

4:55 Almost on cue, the Rams hurt themselves. Two men were moving at the snap, and they’re flagged for illegal shift. Second and eight at the SF 39.

4:57 Richardson gains 5 yards up the middle, and now it’s third and three at the SF 34. I’m betting the Rams throw to Amendola.

4:58 Justin Smith tackles Jackson for a one-yard loss.

4:59 Greg Zuerlein makes a 53-yard kick but the Rams are flagged for delay of game. They’re going to attempt the kick again because Zuerlein easily made the last one.

5:00 And Zuerlein misses the second one wide right. 49ers ball at their 48 yard line. They have 2:42 to get into field goal range.

5:02 Kaepernick scrambles for two yards on first down and Gore gains one yard on second down. Now it’s third and seven at the Rams’ 49. This is a big play.

5:04 Chris Long sacks Kaepernick immediately. Long easily beat Anthony Davis on that one. Now Andy Lee has to punt.

5:05 The Rams will start their drive at their 14 yard line with 1:36 left.

5:08 On third and 5, Willis is flagged for defensive holding on Kendricks. First and 10 at the 24 with 1:03 left.

5:11 Aldon Smith sacks Bradford. There are six seconds left and the Rams have the ball at their 30. They need a touchdown on this play or this game is a tie.

5:12 Bradford is flagged for delay of game. Now he has to throw an 80 yard pass.

5:12 Bradford completes a short pass to Gibson and the game ends a tie. I’m running down to the locker room. Back at you shortly.

  19. DS94everXev says:

    Regular refs still suck.

  20. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

    Finally Crabs!

  21. ribico says:

    Kap2Crab!

  22. DS94everXev says:

FG is MVP of this game.

    • ribico says:

If the score here, a game ball has to go to Kap too.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Yup

      • DS94everXev says:

        Much better 2nd half.

But FG picked up that fumble QB exchange that spelled disaster. Then onthat same drive, a nice catch on a high, fast ball.

And Miller saving that CK fumble.

      • Fourth & Alex says:

Hey Douglas Smith (a.k.a. Alex’s dad),

Why are you so bitter? Every one of your comments are negative towards CK, but I love how you make those point with such subtlety. Does it pain you to see a QB other than Alex have success? You’re guilty of the same hate you throw out there to the anti-smithers.

      • Prime Time says:

Success? I don’t see a tie as success. We need W’s not L’s or T’s.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

It’s not a success. Those that don’t see it I can’t explain. It’s a 1/2 win away from the comp. Not good!

      • Fourth & Alex says:

You must be an idiot if you don’t think CK had a successful game today considering it’s his first true NFL game, even though he basically played a bit more than a half.

With the asinine logic you utilize, if a random player plays a perfect game but his team loses, his personal contribution is not deemed a success? Interesting..

      • Prime Time says:

Sorry 4th and inches, that’s the only way to evaluate in the NFL. Wins and losses. There is no feel good efforts or pretty good showings or even stats. It has and will always be about winning.

      • Fourth & Alex says:

Well in that case we should have just gotten rid of Vernon Davis, Frank Gore, Justin Smith, Patrick Willis, et al. back when we were losing. Especially since they were all complete failures 2 years ago. To borrow a line from Singletary, [you only] want winners right?

      • Prime Time says:

Nope just QB’s get evaluated by wins and losses. Everyone knows that!

  23. big niner says:

    great play call there!!

  24. mbabco says:

Man. I give Kap credit. He’s come on gangbuster.

    bad clock management

  34. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

  35. tkamB says:

    do we want this game?

  49. NinerNation says:

That’s what we get for playing not to lose instead to win. Should have called a rollout pass to Vernon on third down…

  50. Hoferfan67 says:

    Missed opportunities killed us.

  51. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

  71. ribico says:

This is the weirdest f-ing Niner game in years.

  72. NinerNation says:

    The Z-man missed it!!! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeess!!

  73. Big Suede says:

    Unleash the Kaep!!!!

Throw it deep to moss- No more kicking!

  74. Hoferfan67 says:

This crummy game is a tie. If AS were playing we would be enjoying the win!

  75. 49er42 says:

    That works

  76. Nick says:

    What a game

  77. tkamB says:

Refs saved us so much today.

  78. Hoferfan67 says:

Come on Kaep get rid of it…don’t get hurt.

  79. philly9er says:

    Should’ve checked down to gore

  80. big niner says:

question is, if they don’t get a first, do they try a long fg attempt or punt it and go with the tie?

  81. Hoferfan67 says:

My gut tells me Kaep will get it done! TBD

  82. neal says:

    But I hope we do

  83. cUsWin! says:

  84. Hoferfan67 says:

  85. domingo says:

    Unbelievable

  87. JPN001 says:

    That is Kaep’s inexperience.

We don’t want to win today!

  89. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

    We need a turnover!

  90. philly9er says:

    Get a TO D

  91. big niner says:

there’s no double over time right?

  92. JDilla says:

can not take a sack there

  93. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

It’s amazing that this team does not have a freakin screen in their play book. Unbelievable!!

  94. AES* says:

Nooooooo! We can’t take a sack here.
Why can’t we get to Bradford like that?

  95. Hoferfan67 says:

AS is missed today. He needs to learn to slide.

  96. philly9er says:

If we aint gonna win atleast hold on for a tie

  97. msclemons67 says:

    Will somebody please cover Amendola?

    Aldon the beasssssssssssssssssssssssssst!

  100. tkamB says:

    Game-tying sack!

  101. philly9er says:

    Maybe a int TD

  102. philly9er says:

Thought there is a 10 sec run off

  103. undercenter says:

Fitting end to a game that neither team wanted to win

  104. NinerNation says:

    a tie? Kill me now.

  105. big niner says:

    um ok….

  106. domingo says:

The good news, we have a very good QB prospect who looks like he may be our QBOTF!

  107. mbabco says:

Akers. What’s with him this year?

  108. Big Suede says:

I still cant believe akers missed a 40 yard fg- ugh

  109. AES* says:

A game right out of Bizarro! So weird.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Yup, bye weeks are productive. Players take a week off and the NFL gets more money…perfect. LOL

  110. big niner says:

well, it’s not in the loss column so I guess considering what our situation was with AS, I’m ok with it but Akers? man….

  111. Neanderthal Offense says:

That 2nd down handoff to Gore was retarded. Play Empty with 5 WRs and let Kaep run wild. It is unstoppable, especially in high pressure situations.

  112. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

    Wow!

    • domingo says:

Be happy, Kap proved something today.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Yeah, he’s a capable backup. He missed two open receivers. One was a definite TD. Game over.

      • Neal says:

AS misses open receievers all of the time.

      • Jack Hammer says:

“Yeah, he’s a capable backup. He missed two open receivers.”

So you’re saying he plays like the starter?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Neal, knock off your crap! AS has a 69% completion. Post something worth reading!

      • NinerNation says:

        Hoferfan67 says:
“Yeah, he’s a capable backup. He missed two open receivers. One was a definite TD. Game over.”

You are a pathetic excuse for niner fan. Akers should have ended this game period.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, it’s a loss. Play both sides like you often do presumes you are not a fan.

      • Prime Time says:

This kid is not ready. He had many chances tonight to win it and didn’t. I hope you haters can finally admit something. Alex Smith gives us the best chance to win games. If you can’t see that, you can’t see anything.

      • Neal says:

Not going to take 8 years for Kaep to be a good QB, he is better than AS right now. I hope Kaep plays next week against Chicago

      • Jack Hammer says:

Not playing both sides Hofer. CK needs a lot of improvement to be an every game starter, but his ceiling is much higher than Smith’s who is burping like Charlie to not hit the fan at the top of his.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Neal, go back to drama that’s your forte. NFL and 9ers specifically, not so much.

      • Neal says:

We Now have a QB controversy in San Francisco, JH should tell Alex take a couple of weeks off, we have Colin that can fill in.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, that’s your limited biased opinion. I see it differently.

      • Prime Time says:

Hof, Neal knows what he is talking about. Lets hear what he has to say?

      • Jack Hammer says:

Of course you do Hofer. You have been knocking Kaepernick all year. Your act was somewhat accurate during his SD preseason performance because it was preseason, but he just put the team in position to win after coming in cold and down by 7. Say what you want, but that was a pretty good performance for a QB getting his first extended playing time against real competition.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, not a surprise we differ on this. OK we disagree.

    • domingo says:

      Hofer

Kap came off the bench cold. Give the kid a break. We have given Alex eight years. I for one am very optimistic about Kap. His ceiling is quite a bit higher than Alex’s is. Thats not saying a lot but Kap proved more in his first real appearance than Alex did in his.

  113. DS94everXev says:

This was the worst game by PW I think I’ve seen.

CK’s last drive was like his first. He had an easy 6-8 yard pass to an open KH/FG and pulled it down and ran for 2 instead. Had he thrown it, I think we give Akers another chance to make up for a bad season up to this point.

Our D had to stop the Rams. Even if our ST couldn’t, but they failed at the end of the 4th.

  114. JDilla says:

I don’t blame akers, it should never have come down to him. How about poor defense most of the game and the biggest error, TWO fake punts comon that should never happen twice

  115. Giant Fan says:

Kaep should be proud for bringing the niners back to a tie after inheriting a 7 point deficit created while AS was playing.

  116. Neal says:

Roman lacks the killer edge that you need be a offensive coordinator, dumb ass runs when you need to pass, Akers thanks for nothing, anyway we now have a QB controversy in SF.

    • Neal says:

We were also out coached with two fake punts, give me a break.

    • MJ says:

WTF? What qb controversy? Last time I saw Smith was throwing for 7 for 8 for 72 yards and TD passing. There is no controversy. Kaep couldnt pull the trigger on simple pass plays, he got away with his runs, but these are the Rams and he played them to a TIE! Get over your hate.

  117. Hoferfan67 says:

GR trusted CKs legs but not his arm.

  118. AES* says:

Time to see how AS’ health is. I like CK7, but we need AS against the Bears. I have no qualms about that.

AS would have likely made a difference today, but I’m just presuming. The whole team was totally flat today.

The ST’ fell asleep on two fake punts that are inexcusable for a Harbaugh team

I don’t like what I have been seeing from C.Rogers thus far. He is getting beat way to much this season.

    Akers has lost his magic.

This is not a Super Bowl team at the moment because we have to find a way to beat teams like the Rams even on a bad day.

    Bizarro, and weird indeed.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Kaep played hard but he’s a runner. He missed early passes that he should see after 1.5 years. I don’t see it’s his fault completely. Team loss.

    • ribico says:

      >>This is not a Super Bowl team at the moment because we have to find a way to beat teams like the Rams even on a bad day.

      +1000

I don’t want to hear that crap about how our SB caliber defense is being held back by our Smith led offense, or moaning about wasting the Justin Smith window or other such crap.

Everybody on this team, both sides of the ball need to look into theirselves and decide if they want to step it up before they consider themselves SB worthy.

  119. rebelscum says:

Been saying, Fisher is no Joke! Comp-etion! still sucks to tie, better then a loss but not by much!

  120. Adam707 says:

Why we lost today. Defense played worst game in harbaugh era. Got out physicalled by weak Rams. Even with its awful play still had lead in fourth and blew it. Alex leaving also huge factor. Took kaep 2quarters to find a rhythm. Special teams gets an F-, Akers and punt return pathetic. And the sack taken in OT by Kaep was absolutely atrocious. Sad pathetic game. Niners should be ashamed.

  121. AES* says:

    Hoferfan67 says:
    November 11, 2012 at 5:12 pm
Under, this game is over if AS is healthy. Kaep played his butt off but he is only a capable backup. Those two misses were potentially the win.

    @Hofe
Well after today, he is a VERY capable backup.
He missed not seeing one potential TD downfield. The other had he completed, would have been called back because of a penalty.

Kinda harsh to ask this much from a young QB, especially after our veteran QB still has issues seeing the whole field as well.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

AES, he missed two blatant open receivers that would have put the niners up. He’s had the luxury of JH and a talented team.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

AES, btw, I’m responding to those like Neal that think there is now a QB controversy. CK is a very capable backup.

      • Houston 9er says:

Cmon Hof. Smith blatantly misses open recievers every game. Aren’t you being a bit harsh for the kids first significant playing time.

      • Prime Time says:

Hof, there is no QB controversy but let’s hear the haters arguement as to why. Please?

      • NinerNation says:

LMAO, Hof you really are a pathetic! funny how you make excuses for Alex but for the rest of the team its always their fault. Alex would have taken 8 sacks today, Kaeps wheels came in handy. Kaep played well enough to win considering the conditions. Akers missed FG in the end hurt.

      • Houston 9er says:

There is no QB controversy. Smith is the unquestioned starter. CK showed some good and some bad but he’s nowhere near ready to take over for Smith. This team will only go as far as Smith takes them.

Having said that, let’s not denigrate CK for missing open receivers when Smith misses multiple wide open receivers every game.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

NinerNation, who are you? I’m not saying its on CK. He played well for coming in cold as the backup.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Prime, what are you talking about? I never said there is a QB controversy?!!

      • AES* says:

True Hofe. But what’s your angst with CK7?
He came in an emergency situation and was completely cold. Once he got a little rhythm he played respectable and did lead the team back from a deficit.

Why aren’t you leveling any angst toward Akers, ST’ lack of pass rush and a lousy game by C.Rogers?

Seems like you are quick to put CK under the bus here bud.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

AES, he made some good throws, missed a few, ran for some good yards. Did the best he could given the circumstances.

      • ribico says:

        >>let’s not denigrate CK for missing open receivers when Smith misses multiple wide open receivers every game.

Oh, then does that mean you’ll no longer denigrate Smith for missing open receivers? Inquiring minds want to know.

      • Prime Time says:

Hof Neal said there is one. I want to hear his reasons? Please don’t discourage him?

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Rib, that’s my point. I’m amazing for even trying to be the least bit critical but if AS played this whole game do you think they blame the D or ST?

Wow – double standard left and right!

        Right Jack????

      • ribico says:

Smith’s an NFL QB. Kaep’s an NFL QB. NFL QBs aren’t perfect, they all miss targets, throw to the wrong guy, miss the wide open guy, take sacks that they shouldn’t. It sounds like Houston’s seeing the light.

    • ninermd says:

+1….. I wonder how many yards and td’s smith has left on the field over the last two seasons. Hoff quit hating on the kid. You’re comparing a 7 year sophomore to 3 quarters of football. And he’s already a backup? Wow!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, why is it hate to say he is a capable backup?

      • ninermd says:

Hoff. He’s played 3 quarters. What else would you call it? IMO he’s not ready yet. But I think he did pretty damn good today. Yes he missed some open recievers, and took some sacks that he shouldn’t have. But c’mon Smith does the same. And there is no way you would call smith a back up. Smith will be back for Mondays game. So the ck talk will have to fade away. And he will learn with playing time until then I will worry about the defense. Because they are another part of the team that has been inconsistent. Again Minn laided down the game plan. Anyone that has a decent qb and a beast of a rb is going to give us fits. The Rams played the exact same way minn and NY did.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, he’s practiced with top talent, has an offensive minded HC, can learn from AS, etc, etc. What else do you need to know. Don’t BS me!!!!!

  122. ninermd says:

Ck Didnt do anything smith hasn’t done. Now all of a sudden the smith fans see ck miss recievers. Welcome to my world when I’m watching Alex smith do the same. Ck played with heart he’s still got some experience needed, but he did lead them back for a chance to win. Akers has to go. It’s not going to get any better for him this season. With kickers it never does. Smithers you just saw what everyone else sees in smith. Except this was his first time playing meaningful minutes. Quit hating. The kid did pretty well.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

MD, wrong. He had all day to pass on the miss to KW. Don’t make excuses!

      • ninermd says:

Hoff like two weeks ago Smith had all day to throw to VD and even looked at him. I’m not making excuses for CK. I think he played ok but I don’t think he’s ready yet, nor do I see him being a backup after 3 quarters of play. Again that showed some balls coming in and leading the offense back in the fourth quarter. Don’t hate the kid Hoff

    • ribico says:

      >>Smithers you just saw what everyone else sees in smith.

Orly? I thought CK did a damn fine job under difficult circumstances. Can’t pin this loss, err tie, on him.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Rib, I’m not. I think the game plan was poor.

      • Jack Hammer says:

The game plan was poor? They started slow, had a good drive, Smith got hurt, they struggled through the rest of the 2nd, then scored 17 2nd half points with their backup QB seeing his first meaningful extended action and are in position for a FG to win it and the game plan was poor.

        WOW Hofer, you are amazing!!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Thanks Jack! So are you…

  123. ninermd says:

I know everyone wants to talk about the qb. But there is NO way in hell I’m not going to bash the defense. Pathetic. J Smith is a shell of himself last year. The run defense was pathetic, the man coverage was pathetic. Minn, and NY showed how you can beat this defense. Run with power and continue to run with power, then get the corners alone with man. The pass rush is a joke which weakens the rest of the defense. Fangio better start scheming up some blitz packages. And p Willis had the worst game I’ve ever seen from him.
Here’s your defensive grade Grant. A BIIIG FAAT F

    • undercenter says:

I am thinking special teams didnt perform any better.

    • ribico says:

      +10000

md, you and I have our diffs, but I’m right there with you on this one.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Bye week vibe.

      • ribico says:

Bye week? Defscuses? OK, I’ll give them the Giants game – world champs and all. So what was the reason for the Viking pratfall? Even with the Rams TRYING to give it away with all their boneheaded offensive penalties, defense would have none of it.

    • AES* says:

I have to agree with you MD.

    • NinerNation says:

Yea, the defense playing the way they are is a concern as is the ST play also. NOt championship caliber at the moment….

    • niner61 says:

Let’s not give all the blame to the D. They did stop and force the Rams into punting situations on critical drives only to have the not so special teams let the Rams keep the ball. Fangio does need to re-evaluate his concept of sacking the QB not being an important stat. NO real pressure on the QB again!

  124. Sputnik says:

    @ninermd
(+10) Not bad for his first game playing from behind ,would not mind seeing him play hole game

    • ninermd says:

Don’t think we will see him play a whole game yet. Smith will be back Monday night. The defense is what’s making me nervous. We don’t have the offensive capability to carry this team deep into the playoffs.

      • Neal says:

Our Special teams suck, it is inexcusable that we were facked twice on punts. Our defense is not as great as we think, and our offense is just moderatly better than last year.

    • niner61 says:

He was also fortunate that Gore and Miller pulled his bacon out of the fire by recovering his 2 fumbles.

  125. ribico says:

Smith/Kaepernick haters/lovers, can’t we all come together and agree on what lost this game (prevented this win) for us?

A REALLY subpar effort from the usual strength of the team, the defense. The first half was abysmal. That 80 yarder to Amendola in OT that was called back saved their @ss. This was the same defense that showed up against the Vikings and Giants. Actaully, not the same, much worse as the Ram are nowhere near as good as those two teams. A pathetic showing. Our defense has become just as inconsistant as what people say Alex is.

    • Jack Hammer says:

No Rib. My blame goes to Akers and the punt return team.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, how much better are the 9ers than the Rams? It should never have come down to a fg. They should win this game by two tds!

      • Jack Hammer says:

I don’t think they are all that much. I said on Friday they would be down 17-14 and win 21-17 on a 4th quarter comeback, you can check my blog if you don’t believe me.

They are a much better team with Amendola playing. Said that on my defensive keys blog too.

      • ribico says:

Niners were damned lucky they only gave up 24. I saw about 200 Rams yards called back on penalties.

      • Sean in Canada says:

Jack, when the Niners were down 17-14 I thought of your prediction. You were close. Too bad it wasn’t bang on.

    • ninermd says:

      True dat

  126. Sputnik says:

    @Ribico
Can’t argue with that well said

  127. Detroit9er says:

2 things I take from this game.

    1. Kapernick will be fine, He just needs more exp.

    2. Carlos Rogers sucks. Amendola OWNED his ass pretty much the entire game. Only the penalty kept SF from the loss column today

  128. Stan says:

Like Hedi Klum kissing her sister.

  129. 49er42 says:

I thought Colin. Played ok. He bails out of the pocket abit quickly, but he will learn. He clearly is not as comfortable with VD and Crabs as Alex, but that should be expected. He needs to work on making the quicker throws.
Clock management and play calling is still a problem.
Gore is a beast. I would like to know what 23 other backs are better than Frank?
The Defense was bad. The Rams should have only been able to score 13 or so points.

  130. big niner says:

The bears D will eat up Ck next week. I’m hoping AS is ok.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Careful big niner, you may be called a hater calling it straight.

    • AES* says:

Don’t bet the farm on it big niner. CK will come to play. Knowing CK, he lives for this type of opportunity.

But I do hope AS if ready to go next. More importantly, I hope our defense and special teams are ready to play!

    • Jack Hammer says:

Me too BigNiner. Hope his concussion isn’t too severe. Hate to see anyone get a head injury.

AES, he made some good throws, missed a few, ran for some good yards. Did the best he could given the circumstances.

    @Hofe
That is the way I saw it as well. CK7 did the best he could, and he could have won this game except for a missed FG.

I’m not among the crowd who advocates a change at QB. But I am extremely happy to know that we have a very capable backup QB.
If AS is not ready to go next week I happen to believe that CK7 will be more than prepared to meet the challenge.

One thing is certain, it’s going to be an interesting week (l0l).

    • Hoferfan67 says:

AES, I’m not disagreeing with you. Have I disagreed saying CK played his best coming in cold as a capable backup. I only stated a fact that he missed two easy passes one would have been an easy td.

      • AES* says:

Yes he did. But he missed those when as you say, he came in cold.

I can only hope that he learns to see the field better and make quicker decisions when given his chances.

Time to move on from this one and see how AS’ health is and prep for the Bears who are not looking like world-beaters right now.

      • NinerNation says:

Post game shows on radio and tv are very complementary of Kaeps play and stepping in cold putting us in a position to win in OT. Only a Kaep hater / smither apologist would put this on him. Defense and ST killed us. Wake up dude your hate for anyone other than Alex is sad.

      • Jack Hammer says:

They should be NinersNation. His perormance today bodes well for the 49ers and the future.

  132. Shoupbj says:

Wow, This game was an ugly game for our Defense and Special teams. Normally 24 pts isnt a terrible amount but it was the way it was done. Long drives that ate up clock and a plethora of turnovers left on the field made this teams defense look pathetic. Even worse was the fact that this was the second time that a pathetic offense looked great against this defense… it may well be that this team is not mature enough for success.

  133. 49er42 says:

If the Defense doesn’t play better it won’t matter.
I think Kap might give them some problems, but I think Alex would be a better choice.

  134. amprall says:

Pathetic – This is a professional football team? I tire the BS that comes out of Santa Clara. Tie the weakest team in the division. One of the worst teams in the NFL. Pathetic!!

  135. undercenter says:

The offense was the best unit on the field today. Defense, Special Teams, and coaching were not prepared. Kaep has some work to do, all and all he was okay. The team was flat from the get go. I stated during the break that I had some reservations about the defense. People pointed out were number one in all these stats. Well the eye test will always prevail over stats. There is something missing in the defense and its not skill. Could see it missing from the get go. They had it in the Cards game but not in any other game this year. Emotion or something like that seems to be missing.

    • AES* says:

      Totally agree Undercenter.
A few things stand out regarding our defense.

      1. Justin Smith is not playing at the high level of 2011.
      2. Aldon Smith is not penetrating the backfield like he did in 2011.
      3. Carlos Rogers has quickly become just an average CB.

But to add to the concern.
The special teams is playing at an average level as well.
Akers is no longer Mr. Automatic, and our return yardage on KO’ and PR’ are not scaring anyone.

I firmly believe that the offense has surpassed the defense and special teams as the epicenter of the team.

Sadly, the offense (although good) will not be enough to get us to the SB if the D and ST’ does not shake off the inconsistent play.

  136. Sean in Canada says:

The D definitely struggled today. Couldn’t stop the run and no pass rush. Kaep settled in and looked good in the second half. If the Rams don’t shoot themselves in the foot repeatedly, this game isn’t even close.
I mentioned it the other day. Any given Sunday. If the D and special teams play like that, there’s not much the offense is gonna be able to do.

  137. Doc says:

    Now what happens?

SF and STL have the same division record. The only difference is that SF has more regular season wins.

I got to hand it to Jeff Fisher, his team did their homework and showed up to play some football. I know SF is the better team……but honestly, what happend? And don’t say it started when Kap entered the game…… 0ur guys where just not there until they rallied around Kap in the third quarter.

    Perplexed.

    Doc

    • domingo says:

After the bye week we were simply not prepared nor ready to play football. Not an excuse but Jeez I expect more from Haurbaugh.

  138. amprall says:

Many of the player view this tie a loss. Well, that is the most honest thing to come out of Santa Clara this week. Pathetic. Why does this team play down to weaker teams? Pathetic. The tie was a gift from God, and had nothing to do with the coaching and play on the field. No way we should have lost or tie this game. Pathetic!! Unbelievably Pathetic!

    • ninermd says:

It’s a divisional game and the rams played to the formula set by Minn to beat the 49ers. Gotta give the rams some credit.

  139. Alan M says:

I liked what I saw from Kapernick for the most part today. He missed open receivers, but when he settled down, he was impressive throwing and running. You could feel the team’s excitement about him coming in, which says a lot. He’s probably the future. But how to make the transition is the question.

I say let Alex come back next week if he’s healthy against the Bears. Let him play with the pressure of a great defense and a fan base that knows we’ve got a capable guy behind him with a much higher ceiling. You want to remain the 49er QB Alex? Earn it, and keep earning it because if there’s an extended letup, there’s no reason to continue with you and halt the progress of Kapernick.

  140. Alan M says:

Kaepernick is the new Randall Cunningham. Same incredible skill set, but even bigger and stronger. To watch him is to feel excited about the promise he holds. To watch Alex Smith is to be biting your lip hoping he can do enough to win games, and knowing that ultimately, there will be defenses he can’t beat.

  141. MidWestNiner says:

What the?! I get off work to find out we ended in a tie! And with the Rams no less! Gah!

  142. amprall says:

This is not a Super Bowl Team! What will they do against Chicago, New Orleans, New England and Seattle at home or St. Louis at home for that matter. This damn team is notorious for playing down when they need to play up, disgraceful given the talent they have! St Louis came off a by week also – did they look like they were playing with a lot of rust? Pathetic! So sick and tired of the mediocrity curse that seems to surround such a talented team. What needs to go or be eliminated in this organization that is holding it back from being great? Flat football and trap games seem to be synonymous with 49er football.
