Rams-49ers live blog: Third quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the third quarter of the 49ers Week 10 home game against the St. Louis Rams. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis.

3:09 The Rams drive to midfield and then on third and 1, Bradford fumbles the snap. The Rams recover for a one-yard loss. Hekker pins the punt at the SF eight yard line.

3:11 The 49ers defense is controlling the Rams offense. The Rams can be beaten. Kaepernick needs to lead the offense to 10 points.

3:12 Kaepernick completes a pass to Williams in the flat. He runs for 12 yards, fumbles and recovers it. First and 10 at the SF 19.

3:15 Three plays later on third and nine, Kaepernick sails a pass over Manningham’s head. Manningham was open. Kaepernick is playing very poorly so far.

3:16 Amendola returns the punt all the way to the SF 2 yard line, but Anthony Dixon was blocked in the back by Justin Cole.

3:24 Steven Jackson just plowed through Patrick Willis for a first down. I’ve never seen anyone do that to Willis before. First and 10 for the Rams at the 49ers 49 yard line.

3:27 Daryl Richardson gains eight yards up the middle on the next play. The refs add 15 yards to the end of the run because Goldson took his helmet off on the field.

3:30 On second and ten, both Goldson and Rogers miss tackles on Amendola, who gains 15 yards.

3:30 Now it’s third and 10 at the SF 13 yard line. The Rams can’t mess this up because they’re in field goal range.

3:31 Brooks is flagged for neutral zone infraction, and McDonald is flagged for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Bradford. First and goal for the Rams at the SF seven yard line.

3:34 Aldon Smith tackles Jackson for a four-yard loss on second and goal from the five. Bradford throws incomplete on third down. Hekker makes the 27-yard field goal. 17-7 Rams with 18 seconds left in the third quarter. The Rams had the ball almost for the entire quarter. The pressure is on Greg Roman and Colin Kaepernick to score a touchdown on this drive.

3:39 On the first play of the 49ers first second half drive, Kaepernick completes a pass to Moss for a six-yard gain. And that’s the end of the third quarter.

What will GR do? What will he do…????

  2. big niner says:

    we need a stop!!

  3. big niner says:

    lets go GINN!!

  4. tkamB says:

    Lucky break there

  5. Hoferfan67 says:

Oh what field position for the 1st series in the 2nd half!

  6. dangle says:

CK certainly does not have the comfort and game reps running JH’s offense, so the reads and the line of scrimmage audibles won’t be there. There is probably less of the playbook that CK is really comfortable with so there will probably be less diversity in the playcalls. GR just needs to stick with basing the offense on running the ball (with the RBs) and play action. Keep it simple.

  7. 49er42 says:

Run the ball, with some passes mixed in,don’t make Kap win it.

  8. msclemons67 says:

Off topic: How about Norv’s meltdown in the post-game presser? Ouch.

  9. big niner says:

    kw!!! oh man

  10. Domingo says:

    Hang onto that ball Kyle!

  11. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

    Wow! almost a freakin tragedy!

  12. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

Somebody forgot to tell Kap that walker can’t catch.

  13. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

Kap is terrible! We’re in trouble now!

  14. Adam707 says:

Come on Kaepernick. Make a throw.

  15. msclemons67 says:

Ok then… back to the draft. Which QBs will be available around 28 in the draft?

  16. ribico says:

Whew! That return would have been the game.

  17. tkamB says:

    Well refs saved us there.

  18. DS94everXev says:

Had 2 open guys. Come on Roman. Don’t go pass happy.

CK, MM was open. That qualifies as open in the NFL.

  19. big niner says:

at least they saw the block in the back….

  20. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

Kap has to calm down or else…. We’ll bring Dmith back in with the concussion.

    • dangle says:

He just needs to settle a little bit. Hopefully the Defense can keep us in the game and Kap can relax and just play the game. He looks a lil wound up.

  21. Hank says:

A turn over here and were back in it.

  22. AES* says:

When is it the official time to start worrying about the Bears (lol)!

  23. philly9er says:

Who is the emergency QB on the niners?

  24. DS94everXev says:

    undercenter

    CK looks jittery

There is my boy T. Brown! Our best CB.

  25. JPN001 says:

    AES,

I was already worried about the bears.

  26. big niner says:

where are our turnovers this year?

  27. AES* says:

The defense and special-teams will need to pull this one out.

    • big niner says:

      a pick 6 or 2…

    • ribico says:

After that Amendola return, who is going too pull out the special teams? Can’t always count on the refs.

    • DS94everXev says:

      AES

Why? If any QB can do what AS does, why can’t CK do it? 1.5 yrs with the QB guru. No loser coaches.

The ALL IN crowd who talked up CK at the expense of AS is looking really stupid if CK can’t equal an average QB.

      • AES* says:

        Give it a break DS.
The leader of the M.Crabtree ‘hate’ club should know better then to make a statement like this. Sheeesh!

  28. KezarMike says:

Let me get this straight- y’all gonna judge Kaep and his whole future on his FIRST freakin’ game (and one where he comes in during mid game)???? Jeez!!!!!!!!

    • Coffee's for closers says:

yes, this is what he’s being paid to do. Come into a game when the QB gets hurt and get us a win. It’s not his first year in the league, look at what Luck can do in his first year, I think Colin in his second should at least be able to complete passes to wide open receivers and so far he cant even do that.

      • msclemons67 says:

        Exactly. Good response Coffee.

      • tkamB says:

I sort of agree, don’t think 7 attempts is enough to give up on Kaepernick or anything but when you come in mid game the defense didn’t prepare for you so you wan’t to see something good. I mean if Troy Smith could make it work a couple years back Kaep should.

    • 55Niner says:

Of course, KezarMike! Don’t you follow this blog?? That’s how this operation rolls…..joking aside, no way the Rams offense is better than our D..looks to me as though the Niners might be playing at level of their competition…

  29. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

I’m spending alot of money to come see that Bears game. I sure hope Alex is back!

  30. 49er42 says:

    Emergency QB : Harbaugh

  31. msclemons67 says:

Argh… Brooks had 6 points there if he could have grabbed that.

  32. dangle says:

Ooof, that was almost a pick. Nice BAt down by Brooks!

  33. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

    PW cannot allow that!

  34. undercenter says:

    Jackson a beast for sure.

  35. 49er42 says:

Come on. You can’t let that happen.

  36. tkamB says:

We can’t give up a field goal here

  37. Ed says:

Way to leave the Rb unguarded on two 3rd downs Fangio! DAMN!

  38. Alexsmith4mvp says:

Why can’t we make a stop on 3rd and long? Kap is going to need a short field if he is going to lead a td drive right now

  39. undercenter says:

Need to make a stop like right now

  40. big niner says:

    tackle!!

  41. MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

    Our defense is getting punked!

  42. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

D is giving it up again. Gotta hold them to 3

  43. JPN001 says:

Failing to stop that 3rd and long seems to have gotten the defense out of rhythm.

  44. angusinCanada says:

Time to stop frigging around. Stop them right here. Then it’s up to Kaep.

  45. big niner says:

    pick 6 now!!!

  46. michael says:

Goldsons penalties are always game changers.

  47. Coffee's for closers says:

Why is it that our defense is rated higher but looks worse then it did last season?

  48. dangle says:

    We need a Pick here!!!

  49. Big Suede says:

Damn- the niners Defense is just horrible- the whole 3rd quarter was eaten up by this drive

  50. neal says:

Who has it better than us.Rams at the moment, I feel the Rev is in the house.

  51. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

    Defense is losing its cool.

  52. undercenter says:

    turnover now

  53. Coffee's for closers says:

Why didn’t Smith lie and say he was fine. Would Brett Favre ever in a billion years tell a coach or staff that his head hurts? After the TD drive why didn’t he just suck it up and pretend like he was fine? Sorry but if you can complete a TD drive you’re fine enough to finish the game.

    • JDilla says:

Yea its smith fault if we lose this game smh

    • MontanaMan16/GobbleGobbleTurkey says:

It was obvious he wasn’t fine. It don’t work like that anymore!

    • tkamB says:

This kind of thinking is what leads to players having severe problems later in life. The second concussion is always the worst, the NFL taking steps to prevent that is a good thing.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

Look, he finished a drive. He obviously was able to shrug it off or get through the pain immediately after it happened so knowing what happens in the NFL these days when you mention the C word why would he knowingly have himself taken out of the game.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

This isn’t about whether or not it was a good idea, it’s about why didn’t Alex Smith sacrifice himself for the team?

      • tkamB says:

Because there are more important things than football?

      • dangle says:

“He obviously was able to shrug it off or get through the pain ” That is completely the opposite of the point. Concussions aren’t about pain tolerance. The attitude you express is the problem. Brain injuries lead to huge problems later in life and you have to remember that this is a GAME.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Just saying, other QB’s would have stayed in to win the game.

      • ribico says:

CFC…yes he finished the drive. Then came off the field and it was the staff that saw his symptoms and kept him from going back in the game. It’s not Alex’s call to continue or not, not so hard to understand.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

How many players do you read about saying that they’ve played with concussions because thy know they’ll come out if they say anything. Alex was clearly healthy enough to complete a drive he should have kept his composure when he came off the field knowing what might happen.

Unless it’s not a concussion and a shoulder injury instead.

      • ribico says:

Coffee, THE NINERS STAFF KEPT ALEX FROM GOING BACK IN THE GAME.

Can you get that into your head or not?

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Guh, would they have had any reason to hold him back if he acted like he was fine? Why cant you get that through your head?

      • JDilla says:

You’re a joke of a fan coffee. Only someone who roots for certain players instead of the team would try and make that argument. Ever heard of Jahvid Best. His football career is over after two seasons because of multiple concussions in the same game

      • Coffee's for closers says:

yes, everything you just said makes a lot of sense and completely pertains to this conversation. you’ve completely ferreted out that idea, does Scottland Yard know one of it’s finest detectives is missing?

      • dangle says:

Coffee, even if you would prefer to put player health and safety below winning consider this: the NFL has to adapt in order to survive. They are finding out more and more about brain injuries and the league will be in serious trouble down the road if they don’t make it look like they are taking player health seriously. Entire generations of former plays with debilitating injuries does not bode well for public relations.

      • angusinCanada says:

Coffee, you’re out of your head. There’s doctors who are legally obligated to keep the injured player from re-entering the game if they decide they’re risking further injury.
        Are you drunk?

      • Coffee's for closers says:

My comments aren’t malicious not ignorant of the long term effects of concussions. I dont’ want any player on our team or any other to be hurt. Players know what happens when you talk about getting hit or hurt in the head and so does Alex. Deciding to show the trainers his discomfort and pain was in my opinion taking himself out of the game and I think other QB’s wouldn’t have done that.

Is it possible that his eyes gave away a more serious condition and the trainers pulled him, yes absolutely but I didn’t see that, I wasn’t there so Im assuming that isn’t what happened.

    • DS94everXev says:

      Coffee

Remember your last post to me. You are something much worse. Get out of here loser.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Says the queen of the losers. You’re so unpopular that rice crispies wont even talk to you.

    • 55Niner says:

Unfortunately (or not), it’s not up to the player anymore…I kinda doubt Alex would make much difference today. Unless he’s can play defense and is an exceptional tackler. Something that really gone down the toilet today..

  54. philly9er says:

I don’t know whats worse no niner game last week or watching this game.

  55. JDilla says:

At least smith got us a TD before he came out. D needs to step up, Kaep needs to take a page out of Alexs book and use the short passing game, let the receivers get some Yac and use methodical drives

  56. tkamB says:

Its pretty sad that we’ve given up this many points when the Patriots “defense” held them to 7

  57. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

    Defense still holds!!

    • Alexsmith4mvp says:

Thank god. Just stupid that they had to, rams should have punted from their half TWICE but we wait until the goal line to decide to play…

  58. AES* says:

While CK will become the new bash target by the AS apologist, if we lose this game the blame needs to go all around, period!

  59. dangle says:

Whew, looks like the defense is mad now

  60. big niner says:

why are they so flat after time off?

    • Ed says:

I don’t know. The break might have taken the coaching staff out of their groove as well. Too much rest can be a bad thing I guess

  61. msclemons67 says:

The defense should be embarrassed by this game. They know it’s up to them to carry the team and they haven’t shown up today.

    • big niner says:

They were sleep walking the 1st quarter. If AS hadn’t been hurt, this game would be different and the defense would have more time to re-group. I just hope CK can take us down and score a TD. That way, our D might wake up.

  62. big niner says:

    ck 7 time!!

  63. bayareafanatic says:

Funny. AS gets defended constantly after 8 years. CK is getting criticism in his first real meaningful pro appearance. Really 49 fans? Not really.

  64. philly9er says:

4th quater time for Madden offense just throw deep.

  65. msclemons67 says:

Did Kaep just call a fumblerooski?

  66. undercenter says:

give the ball to Gore he will win the game for us.

  67. Big Suede says:

LOL- that was a play by gore- he is a leader

  68. bayareafanatic says:

    CK7 yes

  69. 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

Ok Kap! Give him some time o line!!

  70. Big Suede says:

God i love Kaep to Moss- that is what i like to see.

  71. bayareafanatic says:

    Protect the ball

  72. msclemons67 says:

Holy crap… do the 49ers coach pocket presence at all?

  73. undercenter says:

    Nice Kap

  74. bayareafanatic says:

    Beautiful throw

  75. JPN001 says:

This drive shows the problem with Kaep right now – big mistakes combined with flashes of something special.

  76. bayareafanatic says:

Clemens how about supporting our young QB. He has no experience for God’s sakes. He’s already making throws Smith doesn’t

  77. undercenter says:

    Oh oh

  78. msclemons67 says:

It worked but man, that was a dangerous play call.

  79. bayareafanatic says:

Nice play kid. That’s how you lead a comeback

  80. bayareafanatic says:

And not one Smither has a word to say. Hmmmm. Smith fans not Inner fans

  81. bayareafanatic says:

See all the medium range CLUTCH passes?

  82. philly9er says:

Does anyone else thing that C’mon bits are dumb?
