Report: Alex Smith out vs. Bears, Kaepernick to start at QB

As I wrote earlier in the week, this is an epic moment in 49ers history.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN just reported that Alex Smith has been ruled out of tonight’s game against the Chicago Bears. Smith failed the final concussion contact test and was not cleared to play by an independent neurologist.

Colin Kaepernick will start for the 49ers at quarterback. John Madden said earlier in the week that Kaepernick matches up well against the Chicago Bears defense. To read what he said, click here.

Also, I asked my readers this week if they thought Alex Smith would play tonight. 294 people said Smith would play, and 101 people said he would not. Congratulations to the 101 of you who got it right, and thanks to everyone who voted.

  1. undercenter says:

If this is true, get well AS, next man up – CK, go Niners.

  2. The Grinch says:

Grant did Kap even get any practice reps this week seeing as Harbaugh and co assumed Alex was starting?I hope hes not just bieng thrown in there, this is the wrong defense to be so unprepared.

  3. niner4life11 says:

    Is brandon Jacobs activated?

This would be a good time play him.

    • Ed from AZ says:

      yes it would

    • niner4life11 says:

Who is the number 2 QB – Alex or Tolzien?

      • 55Niner says:

I would think that if Alex wasn’t cleared by the neurologist to start, he isn’t cleared to be the #2 either…my guess is that Tolzein is the back-up tonite.

      • niner4life11 says:

“..Will Tolzien be active Monday night?

“That’s a good question,” Roman said. “An hour and a half before the game we’ll make that decision, but that’s possible.”

Tolzien said he has been given no indication whether he will be active for the game. In fact, he said he is informed the same way every week. Just prior to the official announcement, Tolzien is delivered the news on whether he’ll be in uniform on the sideline…”

      • Adam says:

I’m thinking it would have to be Tolzien unless they’re gonna wing it with Ted Ginn. :P

If Smith isn’t cleared then he can’t suit up is how I understand the rule.

  4. 3rdKing says:

    Niners slipping fast

    We gonna lose tonight

  5. Jack Hammer says:

As Grant said early last week, we are on the precipice of an epic moment in recent 49ers history.

    • philly9er says:

I just hope it turns out better then it did for Eagle fans that wanted a QB change.

    • claude balls says:

      @ Jack:

Next time, try to use some hyperbole.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Claude,

We’ll see how it plays out. It might not be as hyperbolic as you think….

      • claude balls says:

        @ Jack:

Let’s start with surviving and winning first before we get too caught up in “epic moments” in 49ers history.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Seriously, god help us if Kaep eeks out a 3 point win because according to Jack and Grant it’ll be akin to the second coming of Christ.

      • exgolfer says:

        Jack,

Please take this as gentle ribbing:

        ….precipice of an epic moment….

Kind of reminds me of an entertainment reporter doing a piece on Tiger Woods shortly after wrapping his SUV around a tree. She said something like, “A source, who reportedly has knowledge from someone how knows a person close to Tiger Woods says …….”

Precipice of an epic moment? Really? Come on, Jack, for that to be true, so many things have to line up. There’s a ten percent chance, at best, that this is when the 49ers switch to CK7.

Tonight is probably more like driving through Auburn on the way to Reno [a call back to Steve Young's self admitted weird analogy - why would CK's path to 49er starting QB lead him back to Reno, Steve?]. Barring something very strange, CK has got a long way to go until he gets to Truckee.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Ex,

Just propping up Grant, who took some ribbing on the epic moment take from Ribico yesterday.

Hey, at least he’s made it from Davis to Auburn. That’s progress, LOL.

      • exgolfer says:

        Jack,

BTW, if CK does take the job from AS tonight, I’ll be throwing confetti off of the CK7 bandwagon. I’m just not holding my breath.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Claude,

Are you finally figuring out Jack’s self appointed charter here?

      • Jack Hammer says:

        LoL! Poor Hofer.

Keep your focus on the team. They need your positive energy tonight.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Jack,

Sad that your objective filter is no longer working and your biased inner voice is finally coming out in your comments!

      • Jack Hammer says:

Hofer, What is sad is you constantly bringing me up in your posts. All Arrows Up!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Jack,

There you go again trying to insert drama into a football blog. You can use your blog for that nonsense. Not my world.

    • Nick says:

      hyperbole

the latest favorite word of Smithers :)

Get well Alex and get used to the bench

      • Prime Time says:

Just better hope your apparent successor does not crap all over the field tonight. He better secure that ball like the holy grail cause this might be his one opportunity to become an NFL starter Cal clown!

    • exgolfer says:

      Jack,

You should’v gone with, ” We’re approaching the cusp of the precipice of an epic moment…….”

You can use that the next time AS is misses a game and CK gets a start.

      • Adam says:

Python-esque. I can hear John Cleese uttering those exact words. :P

“Hello… we’re approaching the cusp of the precipice of an epic moment.”

    • rocket says:

      Jack,

I’ll settle for an ugly win, but an epic moment would be great too. Truthfully, I expect this to be an ugly offensive game with both defenses dominating. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a 9-6 final score. Not because I think Kap can’t play, but because I see Roman going ultra conservative with him and not taking any chances against the best defense in the league at creating TO’s. If the score remains close, we could see twice as many running attempts as passing attempts from the Niners tonight. Make sure to drink lots of coffee before this one.

  6. Crab15 says:

Matt Maiocco was dead wrong than, he practically guaranteed that Alex would start.

    • Jack Hammer says:

I think the next time we see Alex might be STL.

      • philly9er says:

Do you think the niners can beat the Saintd with CK?

      • philly9er says:

        Saints*

      • undercenter says:

You will see AS when he is healthy to play.

      • Jack Hammer says:

No, but I also don’t think they would win that game with Alex either.

Short week off a physical opponent, long flight, and the Saints are a better team with Vitt now in charge.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        undercenter says:

        November 19, 2012 at 7:32 am

“You will see AS when he is healthy to play.”

Correct. And I don’t see him being cleared until the STL game.

Under, you watch racing and are probably familiar with what happened to Earnhardt Jr. Similar situation here.

      • undercenter says:

Could be STL, could be next week. Hopefully CK stays healthy during this game. I assume if this is true that AS will be inactive and ST will be active. Hopefully CK stays healthy we need him. Cant be running like he does. I look for CK to have a big game.

    • The Grinch says:

Sorry but Maiocco is so over rated …Hes supposed to be some expert insider but is usually the last to break any news and states all the obvious things everyone knows..He never has any inside scoops..

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Ok, you’ve taken the opportunity to twice bash Maiocco but you do realize that he’s like one of only 5 or 6 local beat writers that cover the team and ALL of them dropped the ball on this information.

      • AngusinCanada says:

I don’t know if it’s dropping the ball as much as sports media politics. A lot of sports teams’ brass play politics with the major media re. “scoops”, in return for (hopefully) favourable press.

The Blue Jays old GM, J.P. Ricciardi always used to screw over the local press and give the scoops to his buddies at ESPN. Ricciardi was eventually run out of town and is known as a colossal failure (by the local press. U.S. national press has forgotten who he is).

      • rocket says:

Maiocco reported the info given to him just like everybody else did. Nobody was expecting Smith to be given the thumbs down by the Doctors. The Niners gave him the majority of snaps this week because they thought he’d be cleared. Hopefully Kap is up to the task because it’s a big one.

    • Nick says:

Maiocco is a tool – just like the rest of the beat writers. They just parrot what the team feeds them. In this case, JH and company did an outstanding job of controlling info flow. I guess they saw it as an advantage to not disclose what they did or did not know sooner.

      • FDM says:

I would say it was brilliant in not letting that information get it. If it was Sing, the entire world would have known Monday after the Rams game and probably the game plan as well.
As much as its bad for the fans, Harbaugh does a good job of gamesmanship.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Agree with you FDM. Just another reason Harbaugh is so good.

      • Adam says:

Let’s hope you mean ‘tool’ as in: he’s manipulated by the team.

He’s a nice guy so… the other ‘tool’ wouldn’t be appropriate.

  7. jgwindsor says:

Definitely, a watershed moment for 10 people on this blog

  8. jgwindsor says:

will and how will bears implement spying CK….

  9. Abe says:

The tale of the back ups. The 49ers usually shine under the bright lights. Will Kaep?

    • exgolfer says:

      Abe,

I like our backup a lot better than their backup.

      • FDM says:

I dont know about that ex. Campbell was a long time starter in OAK and has played in the league a long time. He has a lot riding on this game as well as thise migth be his chance to get re-introduced to the NFL as a capable QB.
In must wn games like tonight is, experience and ability to handle the pressure outweighs potential and youthfulness a plenty.

      • exgolfer says:

        FDM,

You may prove to be right, but if Campbell exhibits all the qualities you asign to him, why isn’t he starting somewhere?

      • FDM says:

Im just saying tonight could be a major opportunity for both QB’s if they play well. As much as CK has alot to prove, so does Campbell who at one point was a starter and now has a chance to show the entire nation, he is capable of becoming a starter again in this league.

      • rocket says:

        exgolfer,

Talent wise, I agree with you, but Campbell is far more experienced than Kap and in a tight low scoring game as I expect this to be, that could be the difference in their favor. I hope Kap is up to the challenge. This is a tough defense to have success against.

  10. philly9er says:

I still think niners win but 17-7 now.

    • Nick says:

Chicago will not score a TD. All their points – if any – will come via FGs.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I don’t know Nick. Our run defense hasn’t been good against the better RBs of the league and they’re playing against one of the better tandems in Forte and Bush. I can see the Bears getting at least one touchdown.

  11. Deezybee says:

If kap didnt split reps or get enuff with first team.. That concerns me..Cause all i heard was Alex gettin all the reps mostly

    • FDM says:

We should be concerned because this is a huge stretch of games that will implicate playoff seeding. We need to win tonight and I dont care if its 3-0 or 44-0, the win is the most important. Forget all this other crap about Alex or CK, the objectve is we need a win.

      • Prime Time says:

FDM this is very concerning! The Bears might expose Kap and then what? The haters will jump on the Tolzien bandwagon. I actually can’t wait to see what this kid can do but the win like you said, is most important.

      • niner4life11 says:

        we need the win.

its either going to be really good or really bad.

        but a win we must!

      • exgolfer says:

        Prime,

It seems like you’re doing just what the Alynchers do, root against the QB you don’t like, at the expense of the 49ers.

      • exgolfer says:

        Deezy,

You’re assuming that Roman accurately reported the practice reps that both AS and CK took this week. Maybe he did, maybe he didn’t. I wouldn’t be surprised if the 49ers never intended to start AS this week.

        FDM and Niner4Life,

You guys have it right. The 49ers must win tonight.

      • Nick says:

I won’t call this a must win, but a win would be great. Like Steve Young said, this is a statement game. I think the team will come out and out physical the Bears tonight. The war of the trenches will be won by SF and the game will end 23-0

      • FDM says:

Nick how is this not a must win? It is basically for the #2 seeding in the playoffs and maybe still a chance to catch ATL. Dont forget SEA is lurking and we could distance ourselves from them with a win. Also, do you really want to play GB or NY in the first round? Every game from here on out is a must win, especially when you are playing teams that are ahead of you or competing with for seeding.

  12. Big Sky Niner says:

How does a national guy like Chris Mortensen get a scoop like this ahead of writers who get paid to follow the Niners full time?

  13. Crab15 says:

    Grant – Were you Mortensen’s source? :-)

  14. MTL 9ers Fan says:

I naturally want the 9ers to win tonight, but unfortuantely I do not see it. Kaepernik plays very loose with the ball while running, he will fumble on several occasions. The defense and run game will need to step up in a big way in order for the 9ers to have a remote chance of winning.

  15. ribico says:

OK, Grant et al. You get your “epic moment” after all. For the sake of the team and it’s fans, let’s hope it doesn’t turn into an epic fail.

Lets go Kap, Niners! We got a post-season push to worry about, not a bogus controversy agenda to push.

    • Jack Hammer says:

They are going to win tonight Rib. Have faith.

      • Prime Time says:

I hope you are right for once Jack!

      • Jack Hammer says:

Prime, I have been right quite a bit. Crabtree starting at WR ring a bell?

Had the 49ers winning 13-9 in my prediction, and that was based on my assumption that Kaepernick would start. Good times!

      • Prime Time says:

And when Kaepernick comes out and looks like a deer in headlights tonight and coughs up the ball, it will be an epic night cause then finally you haters will realize he is not ready. I can’t wait to see the egg on your faces later this evening.
I hope we win and the kid plays great. I don’t think that happens against a defense like the Bears. If you thought Roman was conservative with Alex, tonight will be like watching paint dry on offense.
I will not be surprised to see Kap try and do too much as he knows this might be his chance to be the starter moving forward. This is not the time and it will hurt the team by him forcing things and not being patient.
        Well see.

      • Jack Hammer says:

“I can’t wait to see the egg on your faces later this evening.”

Way to be a fan Foley.

      • Prime Time says:

Jack you should be use to it, you are always predicting the worst but now when it’s not Alex it’s about being a loyal fan? Hypocrite!
I just don’t think the kid is ready and against this defense he is going to be shell shocked. I hope I’m wrong but it’s a bad situation to start your first game on Monday night, a playoff implicating game against an experienced ruthless turn over type defense.
Lets see how it plays out.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Prime,

There is a big difference between thinking they might lose, and actually hoping they do so you can “see egg” on anyone’s face when they fail.

      • exgolfer says:

        Jack,

Since you are often right [not sarcastic], couldn’t you have come up with a more impressive example than MC starting at WR? I can’t think of one consistently sensible poster who didn’t know that MC wasn’t going anywhere.

      • exgolfer says:

        Knock it off, Prime.

You can’t simultaneously root for the 49ers to win, and CK7 to fail. It doesn’t work, and it makes you the same as Bay and Jordan. Not good.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Ok Ex,

I was one of the first to say Alex would not play this week. I called the use of the read option with Kaepernick at the very start of training camp. Those might not be what you are looking for, but I will leave it at that.

You may not know the history between Prime and myself regarding the Crabtree starting bit.

      • ribico says:

Yeah, I think they will too, Jack.

But it’s never good for a team having it’s #2 coming in though. Hmm…. I wonder where that stat is.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Jack,

Good for you. You win a COOKIE!! lol

      • Prime Time says:

I’m not rootin for CK to fail. Im saying he is not ready to compete in this situation and therefore our chances of winning decrease substantially.
I said I hope I’m wrong but considering the situation it will be very tough for the kid to deliver a win. He could not do it against a lesser defense in the Rams and now against the best possible defense in the league? Good luck!
The haters have said all year that any QB could come in and run the offense and win games as Alex has. Well tonight might be another night that they are wrong and if Im right, I will be here scrambling up some eggs.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Here you go Jack, I think you’ve already worn out the first one I gave you: http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/4evrnyt/9de62d6d_HallburnPatmyselfontheback.jpg

*yes I’m repeating myself but I found a different version of the image so it’s almost new.

      • Jack Hammer says:

LoL Coffee! That one looks like after I have eaten all of Hofer’s cookies!! All Arrows Up!

      • exgolfer says:

        Now you’re talking, Jack!

      • rocket says:

If we are fans of the team and not an individual player, we should be hoping Kap plays great tonight. It doesn’t matter which side of the Alex Smith drama you are on; the teams success should be everyones ultimate goal.

  16. RednGold1 says:

Hey, I was one of the 101 who voted Kaep would start. But not cuz I want Alex to be hurt. Get well, Alex. Be well, Alex.
I just wanted Kaep to start cuz I like Kaep better. Just because.
    Now to answer your question:
Will we lose without Alex or will we Krush ‘em with Kaep?
I vote “we Krush ‘em with Kaep.”
    Now to your other question:
Is there a long term Quarterback Controversy?
Let me think on that a minute.

  17. Razoreater says:

This is going to be a turnoverfest. CK is not ready. Please prove me wrong, pretty please.

    • niner4life11 says:

      +1

    • RednGold1 says:

Razoreater, when you eat razors you don’t think “My gums are gonna bleed” do you? I’ll bet you think “Kaep’l Krush ‘em.” Now, tell me I’m right and … btw … did you really say “pretty please”? :)

      • Razoreater says:

You’re a being of the darkest descent
        You don’t belong anywhere
You’re always hungry, but never content
All of your sins, you could never bear
        Now you’re feeling good
        But you’re really dead
And you’re wearing make up and perfume
In the gallows you were hung
But now I see you walk instead

        Razor eater
        He’ll never ever die
        Razor eater
        He’ll never ever die

        Well you kept your secrets
        And locked them up
        Then drained their blood
        As you read your books
See the show and drink from your cup
        And then hang your darlings
        From the hooks
Slice them up, no one will ever know
But still you smell that smell
And now you’re dead since long ago
        You better burn in hell

My name is taken from this song by Yngwie.
I hope Kap crushes them, but the reality is he is not ready and facing the best defense in the NFL, Do the math.
Yes I did. I want to win. Losing depresses me all week not to mention I live among the enemy….

      • RednGold1 says:

        very cool.

  18. FDM says:

Grant I would like your perspective on what if Kap comes in and totally blows this opportuntity by turning over the ball, looking uncomfortbale, panicking? Will they turn to Tolzien or let Kap ride it out and does he need a huge game to become the starter for the rest of the year?

  19. RednGold1 says:

    “Kaep will Krush ‘em.”

  20. Dangle says:

As my 3 year old nephew said this morning: Go Captain Bumpernickle! That’s how he says Colin kapernick.

  21. Coffee's for closers says:

I hope someone bothers to ask the 49ers how or why they felt confident to give Smith the bulk of the reps this week if there was ANY chance that he might not be able to go?

I just don’t buy it that he was fine all week and then after a couple of perfunctory bops the head is suddenly not cleared to play. Something smells fishy in Denmark.

    • Jack Hammer says:

      Gamesmanship Coffee.

Kaepernick probably took a lot more reps than was let on. Remember, the reporters are only able to watch the first few minutes of practice each week. The only ones who know how the reps were split are within the organization.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Yea and clearly Jack that is what’s been going on but I’m still questioning it a bit. Have you seen a QB get cleared to practice and then fail the final test, especially when the test turns out to be in reality a couple of slaps to the head.

At this point I have to wonder if this isn’t more of a team decision then one made by the doctors.

      • Jack Hammer says:

It may be Coffee, but I doubt that they would ever disclose that it was a decision made within.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Since they been fibbing all week about Smith’s readiness to play I think we can say with certainty that they’ll never tell us.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Coffee,

That is JH’s MO. Do you really believe AS got the majority of the snaps this week?

      • Coffee's for closers says:

        I did until this morning.

  22. Coffee's for closers says:

This moment is about as meaningful in the 49ers history as it was on November 2 2003. Yea we won that game but where is that QB now?

  23. RednGold1 says:

I read somewhere, some post, on the internet (so you know it’s got to be true), that rarely is a player cleared for non-contact practice then not cleared to play the game. But I guess that is what happened in this case. Get well, Alex.
    Kaep’l Krush ‘em. The Bears.

  24. Adam707 says:

Wow can’t believe Alex was able to practice all week and yet unable to play. Tonights game is going to be a real snooze fest

    • exgolfer says:

      Adam707,

Snooze fest? How? The 49ers need this win, badly. Setting that aside, there are tons of story lines to the game. I’m intrigued.

It may turn into a snooze fest at some point, but, right now, I can’t wait for kickoff.

    • dangle says:

Adam Its going to be the opposite of a snoozefest! Kaep may not know the offense as well, may not be as accurate, may have an awkward throwing motion, may not read defenses as well, but the one thing he is Not, is Boring! Every CK snap on offense, as opposed to the efficient predictability of the Smith offense, will have the potential to be a deep pass, QB scramble for big yards, an INT, a Fumble, or eluding pressure before finding a scrambling WR. To put it shortly, there is just a lot more Big play opportunities with CK than with Alex. What remains to be seen is whether that will be a positive or a negative.

  25. Hoferfan67 says:

It’s the correct move. I thought even if AS was cleared, CK should start. With JC out as well, there should be absolutely no reason the 9ers lose this game. They can design run plays, which they do very well, that will be enough to win this game. It will be interesting…

    • Coffee's for closers says:

“there should be absolutely no reason the 9ers lose this game.”

After making similar statements before the Minnesota and St. Louis game I would have thought you would have learned your lesson by now.

Coffee, me and a few others. If all three units are ready to play they are simply better than the Bears. Do you disagree? It could be worse, like the team on the other side of the Bay.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

It’s not that I don’t agree I just got tired of them proving me wrong so I stopped saying it.

    • exgolfer says:

      Coffee,

Just because the 49ers lost to the Vikings, doesn’t mean they should’ve lost to the Vikings.

Maybe it should be said, “There’s no GOOD reason for the 49ers to lose this game.” Sorry if I’m speaking out of turn considering your comment, Hofer.

I feel the same way about the game tonight. Of course, the 49ers could lose, but I don’t think they should lose.

  26. ribico says:

Open letter to DS, Hofer, Prime, etc

We have our backup QB playing tonight and it’s going to be a tough game for the team to pull out. So how about this – don’t fixate on every single play that doesn’t turn out well for the Kaep – missed throws, reads, sacks, even turnovers. That’s the game losers/haters play, as team fans we are better than that.

Conversely, the hater brigade will view any positive play as the best thing since sliced bread and absolute justification for their epic moment controversy. Don’t get drawn into their mania, keep your eyes on the goal – a win in this game. And to keep winning, no matter who is playing, whether it’s Kaep forced into the starter’s role, or Alex, when he’s cleared to resume his starter’s duties.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      Rib,

Don’t lump me in with anyone. I’m here and comment as an individual. I’ll state the good and the bad on facts only.

      • ribico says:

Of course, Hofer. If you want to post 500 times on a Kaep missed throw, by all means.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Rib,

That was a one off mainly for a certain know it all that doesn’t always give a non biased opinion. I guess the key there is know the source and don’t click on the link that is being peddled! =)

    • DS94everXev says:

      ribico

Grant has blown his top. I have the same rules regardless. Win.

    • exgolfer says:

      +1, Rib.

Disclaimer: the preceeding “+1″ is not directed at any one individual, but rather at the general tendency of some to support their favorite QB to the point of being at cross purposes with the 49ers.

    • Prime Time says:

Fair enough Rib. Here is me shuting up about the game tonight. Go Niners!

    • rocket says:

Well said rib. Kap should be given the same consideration if not more than Smith is given by his supporters. This will be the first start of his career against a hell of a defense. I’m pulling for the kid big time and hope he can lead us to a win.

  27. swissard says:

Yes it’s up to Kap to perform BUT the coaches – GRo – has to use his brain and use Kap’s strengths to succeed. Kap can throw well on the move…so hand offs, fake hand offs, roll outs. Situations that place him on outside the pocket to get the defense to move outside the box, bring backers and backs up releasing TE or others into areas. Use the tools to deceive.

  28. foamingatdamouth says:

This is very disappointing, for it’s a clear sign that Alex Smith put his pride before the team, by taking the majority of 1st team reps and preventing Kaepernick from adequately preparing to start. I always understood and accepted that the reason Smith had fiercely loyal defenders, due to his apparent wholesome boy scout character. Unfortunately, being human, he made a mistake in judgement that was fueled by the need to jealously defend his status as the starter. Whether that status is truly threatened by Kaepernick lighting it up on MNF and leading the team to a win is another matter. What is the real issue here is that Alex Smith’s interests were put before the good of team.

    • ribico says:

So Alex tells the coaches who is going to do what at practice? If so, we must give him a helluva lot more credit for the team’s success than we have.

    • Spaceborn says:

Smith was out there practicing because that’s what football players do; they want to play in games and most are selfish in that respect. Would you rather have a player that didn’t want to get back ASAP on the team? Imagine what it would have been like for A Peterson and the Vikings this season if he hadn’t worked to get back on the field as soon as possible?

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      Foam,

AS took the majority of the snaps like he is starting tonight. Maybe we should check with CMort to see what the answer is because clearly someone at 9er HQ is feeding him the info first.

    • dangle says:

foaming at the mouth… so you have rabies… but are you high as well? C’mon MAn!

    • Justdareal says:

Oh, I hear you all the way, but can’t put this on Alex. He was just going through the protcol. The coaching staff should’ve made the appropriate adjustments to handle reps in practice. I guess we’ll see what happens.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Do you really believe after all of the smoke and mirrors, that CK didn’t get the majority of the snaps? Really??

      • Justdareal says:

        Hofer,

I really don’t know. All I have to go by (Just as anyone else) is what the media relays to us.

It’s my sincerest hope that he got the majority of the snaps for the sake of being prepared for this Bears defense so we don’t look like a joke on MNF.

  29. Spaceborn says:

Not sure I could call this an “epic moment” in 49er history, though. I see this simply as the back-up QB starting a game in place of the regular starter who is injured. Isn’t that why he is called a backup? I want Kaepernick to do well, but I don’t think this is the end of Smith this season. Kaepernick will get his shot next season.

    • Justdareal says:

All I want to know from the coaching staff is did Kaepernick get a sufficient number of reps with the 1st team. This from Maiocco,

“When asked if Smith went through the same workload at practice as usual, 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman answered, “Thereabouts.”"

I really don’t want to hear about Kaepernick not getting the snaps he needed to prepare.

  30. ninermd says:

May I be the first to say. If CK doesn’t play well its because he Didnt get all of the snaps in practice. There our very first kapaxcuse!

And oh my either way it goes the blog will be lit up. Hoff you seem upset that CK is starting dude. Chill if you’re a 49er fan why the attacks on Jack and backhand slaps at CK? Positive vibes my dude.

    • FDM says:

MD, what do you think happens if CK plays poorly?

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      MD,

I said early in the week that I thought no analysis was needed and that they should start CK regardless if AS was cleared. Head injuries are not to be messed with. One game versus long term health – there is no debate there. I’m sorry to say you are wrong my friend. I hope CK does well because 7-2 is better than 6-3 in the bigger scheme of things.

  31. Justdareal says:

    See here we go:

“ESPN’s other top football information man, Adam Schefter, said on Sportscenter this morning that the 49ers quarterback took half the first-team reps at Sunday’s walk-through, but did not pass the final test of the NFL’s concussion protocol.”

    http://blog.49ers.com/2012/11/19/morning-tailgate-nov-19/

Well, I hope only 50% of the snaps is enough for Kaep.

    • Justdareal says:

      And then this from Sando,

“Reports have suggested Smith took all the meaningful practice reps in anticipation of playing against the Bears. If that is the case, the 49ers would appear to be at a quarterback disadvantage going into the game. Even so, the staff had to know there was a chance Kaepernick would play. ”

So, the question remains…did he receive enough snaps or not?

      • MidWestNiner says:

I don’t think we’ll ever get a solid answer from the Niners brass, but tonight’s game could help answer that question.

  32. OREGONINER says:

I think that tonight’s game ends 32-30 setting the NFL record for field goals (15 each) and a 49er victory in OT with a safety.
