Roman on Crabtree: “He’s running after the catch better than anybody I’ve seen.”

SANTA CLARA — Here is what Greg Roman said Thursday about Michael Crabtree, courtesy of the 49ers.

What makes WR Michael Crabtree so valuable on third downs?

“Well, Michael’s a really good football player. Mike’s got great hands. I think Coach [Harbaugh] said he’s got the best hands he’s ever seen. We marvel at his hands every day in practice.  He’s a natural catcher; we can’t take credit for that. The guy’s got great hands. He’s running after the catch better than anybody I’ve seen and I don’t want to invite people to tackle him better by saying that, but it’s a fact. The guy after the catch is just running with a purpose and a mission. He’s gotten us several first downs just by running tough. He’s a good all-around player that continues to improve. He’s still young in this league and we’re counting on him to get better all the time.”

Who has the best hands you’ve ever seen?

“You know I don’t like to compare players. Have a great day.”

Jerry Rice. That’s all you had to say dude. Mr. Crabs has been playing possessed after the catch. Did I mention he has meaty claws?

    • Crab15 says:

Razor – Crabtree has colossal claws.

    • Bray says:

Jerry Rice… greatest reciever ever… had average hands at best, he excelled every where else. Chris Carter had the best hands I ever saw. Crabs has mongo claws,

I think the reason Crabtree has been so good after the catch is because of the threat Kaepernick brings to defense with his feet and his arm. When Alex Smith is under center, you don’t have to defend the deep pass and you can keep everything in front of you.
When Kaepernick is in, you have to focus on his ability to run, his ability to beat you deep and you have to keep one defender up to keep contain on the QB. That opens the D up and gives Crabtree the room to run after the catch.

Crabtree actually has only had 7 catches for about 65 yards with Kaep as a starting QB (3 full games). He hasnt had much opportunity to get YAC with Kaep in. Nice try tho.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Yes MC’s production has been lower with CK at QB. I wonder if it is because CK can’t throw him open? LOL

      • Jack Hammer says:

Grant said it best about Crabtree last week. He is usually the underneath receiver, and Kaep tends to go with the deeper read more often.

had me some mongo claws in the everglades last week

Crabtree has been playing out of this world. He is proving that he’s a true #1 this year

He’s been playing amazing since the middle of last season, when he finally got healthy. He is one of the most underrated players, not just receivers, in the NFL.
I’m hoping his numbers go up with Kaep, they win with Kaep, and he chooses to resign in a couple of years for not outrageous money!

      • Grimey9er says:

I expect his ypc to go up now.

Our front office guys are damn good, but given Crabtree’s history, I don’t see that happening. Enjoy him while we’ve got him!

Crabs is doing good. I wouldn’t say #1 talent though. Running after the catch better then anyone he has seen??? Really…

Listen it is hard to really judge Crabs b/c the Niners never consistently throw to one WR. I see Rio make a few nice catches at the beginning of games then *poof* no more receptions, maybe 1 more but that is it. I guess they spread the ball, run and wins games and that is what it is all about.

With Williams out i want to see how MC can work consistenly out of the slot. Since Kaep has came in his numbers are way down ( 7 catches 65 yards in 3 games) It looked as if Smith and Crab had hit their stride right when Kaep came in. Hope Kaep can utilize his YAC ability.

I had my doubts whether Crabtree would stay with the team when his contract is up, but with CK7 now starting I’m leaning more towards him staying on board.

Crabtree’ numbers have declined with CK over the last two weeks, but the potential for the ‘big catch and play’ are clearly more evident with CK7 at the helm and that has to make Crabtree along with the other WR’ excited about the change.

R.Moss only has 2 TD’ and M.Manningham has 1 TD after 8 games with AS as the starter. I seriously see those TD numbers going up with CK as the QB.
