The 49ers play the Saints Sunday at the Superdome. In the meantime, I’ll break down five key matchups.
SS Roman Harper vs. TE Vernon Davis
The Saints absolutely cannot leave Harper one-on-one with Davis in this game. Steve Spagnuolo must devote two defenders to Davis.
In the playoffs last season, Gregg Williams thought Alex Smith wouldn’t make the Saints pay for single covering Davis. Davis beat Harper for 180 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Kaepernick has shown he’ll throw the ball to Davis even when he’s double covered. There might be nothing the Saints can do to contain the 49ers stud tight end.

He intentionally overthrew a corner route when Davis was triple covered and there was no one else in the pattern.
This game will not be as close as last year. Out defense is mature and our offense is playing its best ball. Niners in a BIG win. Wouldn’t have said that last year, but this is our year. And Saints D, although playing better than earlier in the year, have absolutely NOT answer to our running game. The heavens shall open with first downs and TD’s.
