Steve Young spoke on KNBR Wednesday afternoon. Here’s what he said about Colin Kaepernick.
Q: How do you think Kaepernick did against the Rams?
YOUNG: I thought he was thumbs-up. A young player in a tight spot. Had to go down and kick a field goal – did it. Had to bring the team back – did it. For young players, those are big deals. Now, was it pretty? No. Was it efficient? No. But he moved around. He’s got some nice weapons with his legs which make up for what he doesn’t know in the pocket. I certainly did the same thing. In some ways, I was very familiar with the effort – the dive in the end zone for the score. Those are all positives.
Now, you can’t take that performance and say, “This is a sign of future greatness,” because there are a ton of things that have to happen, but a backup quarterback comes in and does that? That’s solid.
Q: He definitely had some Steve Young moments.
YOUNG: I like the fight. I like the idea that we’re in a battle and I’m up for it. It may not be pretty, but I’m in the mix. I’m making some throws and making some plays. He made some throws and he certainly made some plays with his legs, and so we’ll build from there. Obviously, he’s on 1-80 in Davis and he needs to get to Reno, but at least he’s on the road. That’s good. That was a strange metaphor.

Yes, but what direction is he driving in?
Tell Kaep to stop at Murder Burger (nka Redrum Burger) as he passes through Davis. Great Burgers.
As much as Ive bashed the prospect of Kaepernick starting I should take a step back and still give credit where it’s due and I haven’t done so, in fact the opposite a bit.
I’ve always said that the measuring stick for your back up QB is how many games out of 4 could he win if he had to play for a month. So far Kaepernick hasn’t won his first game but he didn’t lose it either even though he easily could have given the way the defense was (not)playing and that he came into a game that the team was already behind in. Could he have done more, should he have done more? Yes but where I didn’t give credit is that he did enough. He did just enough for us to not walk away with a loss, technically and in my book that is truly all you need from your back up QB, someone that wont lose the game. Now you cant get by with 4 straight tie games and obviously that wont happen but he did enough and enough is all that should be asked of him.
Great compliments coming from the best running QB in 49ers history. Also a great example of a running QB that was developed into a pass first superbowl winning QB that went on to become one of the top 15 QB’s in the history of the game…..
I hated SY when he first became a 49er. My loyalty to Montana burned deep. But man did number 8 win my heart over with his never die style of play….
