Vernon Davis on his role with the 49ers: “I have to accept it. I have to live with it. I have to deal with it.”

SAN FRANCISCO – Vernon Davis caught four passes for 30 yards Sunday against the Rams. The Pro Bowl tight end has not caught more than four passes in a game since Week 5 against the Bills.

I just asked Davis in the locker room how he feels about his current role on the 49ers. Here’s what he said.

ME: The last few weeks, Greg Roman has approached you after games and said, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t able to get you the ball.” Did he talk to you today after the game?

VERNON DAVIS: No. No, he didn’t.

ME: How do you feel about your level of involvement today?

VERNON DAVIS: Um…(eight-second pause). I do what I’m told. That’s pretty much it. At this moment, that’s all I can really do. My main focus is making sure that I’m a team guy, just accepting the simple fact that the coaches are giving me a certain role to play. I have to accept it. I have to live with it. I have to deal with it. I look at the bright side of things, and I know we have more games and there will be plenty of opportunities for me to help this team.

ME: Do you like your current role?

VERNON DAVIS: I accept it. We’re all competitive. Everybody on this team is competitive. For me, I want to help this team – that’s my main focus. I want to make plays – that’s what I want to do. But if it’s not given to me, I’m not going to put my head down and pout. I’ll accept it.

Dead horse: Meet Grant Cohn. He is going to keep beating you over and over again.

  2. Jacka says:

Still trying to make a story out of this. He’s drawing double teams and leaving the underneath stuff open. 4 catches on a team that doesn’t throw a lot is not a problem. Get over it

  3. Alan M says:

Um, it is a problem. When talented players don’t get to do what they do best, they leave in free agency for a team that can better use their talents.

Grant is trying to divide the locker room. You’re an example of why Harbaugh is so guarded with the media.

Pure and simple 9ers run the ball. We threw 25 passes in 5 quarters and compleeted 19 of them. Vernon caught about a quarter of the completions on a team that also has Moss Crabtree and maningham. Also we threw 2 screens today so thats 2 less completions to the receivers. We need to remember he is a TE. Up to until a few years back TE wern’t suposed to catch 100 balls a season. Gronk Graham Gonzales might catch more passes per game but thats it. On a team that barely passes a TE who catches 4 passes should be par for the course and not a cause for concern. I can see if we threw the ball 50 times and he didnt get any but come on this is a non issue
