Vitt on Kaepernick: “You saw the team’s confidence grow around him as the game wore on.”

New Orleans Saints’ interim head coach Joe Vitt spoke to Bay Area reporters on a conference call this afternoon. Here’s what he said about the 49ers quarterbacks.

Q: Are you going to prepare for both quarterbacks?

VITT: Absolutely. Both quarterbacks are playing within the framework of the offense. Both quarterbacks are highly skilled, can make plays with their feet. Both protect the ball. We’re studying both on film. We’re defending plays more than we’re defending people right now.

Q: What was your take on how Colin Kaepernick played in his first NFL start?

VITT: It was absolutely phenomenal. I thought he played like he was a five-year vet. No.1, the tempo. He had them in and out of the huddle, they were up and down, on and off. That was outstanding. He made quick, decisive decisions with his arm in the passing game. He had tremendous ball handling in the running game. He showed tremendous confidence and you saw the team’s confidence grow around him as the game wore on.

I would expect that Kap gets his second start on Sunday and he has my full support… Hopefully we can get another quick lead and allow the Smith brothers to pin their ears and put Drew Brees on his back. It was only a matter of time before Alex’s days were up…. Alex has been a backup before so he should be used to it.

  2. Fansince77 says:

I would not trust the thoughts of an opponent’s head coach on the QB situation at all. They are going to use anything they can to get an advantage. A QB controversy is better then none. What do you expect him to say?

  3. Foamingatdamouth says:

There is no QB controversy. There is only media hype and some fans having trouble coming to terms with Alex Smith being surpassed by a greater talent. 9 more games to #6!

  4. Neal says:

According to ESPN, Harbaugh might rotate the QB’s, that crap has never worked, start mediocre if you have too, but please don’t rotate.

  5. 49erskid says:

Alex Smith will start. Kaep had a great game but Alex will start the rest of the season but will be his last season with us.

  6. Neal says:

The Niner’s have very little cap room next season, if CK blossoms as I expect, AS will be holding a clipboard somewhere eslse.

    • htwaits says:

The 49ers cap this year was designed to enhance their cap in 2013. For instance, Gore got his big money this year, and will have a very small number for the cap next year. Also, Kaepernick will only be on the third year of his rookie contract next year, and Alex,s pay for this year and the next two years puts him behind 19 other quarterbacks.

The 49ers are in good shape in the foreseeable future as far as the cap is concerned. If they win the Superbowl, that might cause some problems, especially on defense. The one I worry about is NaVorro Bowman. Two Super Star middle line backers are great, and expensive.

Enjoy now. It’s all you’ve got.

      • Prime Time says:

        Don’t forget Goldson

      • Neanderthal Offense says:

Willis’ number falls from $17M this year to $4M next year. The big ones coming are Goldson, Bowman, & Aldon Smith. If they’re smart they’ll look to re-sign Delanie McDonald, too. They’ll part ways with Sopoaga after this year and probably Ginn, too. Cutting Alex would be a smart move, but probably unlikely to happen because their entire QB payout will still be far less than the league average.

Carlos Rogers should be cut if they can save money by doing so.

      • Prime Time says:

Ray MacDonald just signed a 5 year deal in 2011 Tarzan. Do your homework son!

      • Chicago49er says:

Neanderthal, LOL! Chucky kept calling D Walker, McDonald!!! Too funny

      • Neanderthal Offense says:

Prime you friggin jack*ss shut your effing mouth and get back to fluffing. That’s what you’re good at. See Chicago9ers post for some understanding of dry humor comprehended… Chucky!!!

    • sledpunchingback says:

he cld start for many mediocre teams around league and attach his mediocre Lego empire w/ theirs. For example, Romeo Crennel is gonna have to give KC fans some hope. Jax probably nds a QB, Buffalo still nds one. oh that’s right, they already purchased their A. Smith clone

They wrote his 1 yr contract perfect.

    • Chicago49er says:

Sorry do not agree! 49ers would be crazy to let Alex go even if CK plays lights out! We need both QBs period

  7. Jack Hammer says:

Poor Chilo Rachal. First he gets called for intentional grounding and now this…

  8. Adam707 says:

Kaep officially gets the nod for the Saints game. He has a repeat of last week and the Smith era will officially be over. Hard to admit.

  9. Chicago49er says:

I am not too happy about this decision for a few reasons:

    1) We are playing on the road in a dome, also its a short week so CK will not get enough prep work with the first team

    2) This move will put alot of pressure on CK and I just do not want him to lose confidence if he has a bad game!

    3) Ck still is a rookie and it will help him if he sits and learns the position and the defenses

    4) If Alex is healthy he must start unless he had a very poor performance!

I was very proud of CK and hopefully he will be the future of this team however we can not just throw him to the wovles!

Anyway GO CK and the Niners please beat the saints

  10. Hedges says:

Here’s a proposition. Alex is ruled out next week, but has no concussion problems for the rest of the year. If Colin excels in NO, then he’s the starting guy for the rest of the season if things don’t blow up for him (not so-so games, but BAD games). If after watching the tape on Colin, NO has his number and punks the guy, then Alex has to be back (in a year and a half of games he has never been punked). And then Alex will be the QB for the rest of this season, come good or bad. Colin had his shot. Next season? It could very well be Colin. Depends on training camp. And, if so, Alex would be wise to accept a backup role on this upper eschelon team. Or, he could go to Jacksonville, and get brutally beaten.

    • sledpunchingback says:

you’ll survive Chicago, we had to sit thru 8 yrs of crappy football you’re gonna enjoy this. We trying to get 1 more trophy before they leave us in SF.

ESPN reports decision for Kaep official.

  11. Foamingatdamouth says:

Smith isn’t coming back next year because it would mean he’ll be paid starter $ to be a back up. There’s to many needs for that to happen. Baalke & Harbaugh drafted Kaepernick and have done everything possible to groom him. They’re not going to stunt his development by sending him back to the bench, especially after he showed a command of the offense and superior athletic skill on a big stage debut. He’ll start next week, and if he continues to play well (Rams game included), then the transition to him as the permanent starter is complete. Pro-Smith media and fans can argue otherwise, but it’s contrary to Baalke’s and Harbaugh’s actions; and to say it’s a bad idea is to argue against their successful draft and player development record. 9 more games to #6!

  12. bayareafanatic says:

No way Kaep sits in the pocket this week and chucks it long. Loud hostile environment. We are going to ground and pound. This is a good week for Jacobs to return.
The rest of the season is about our new QB getting experience. It will make us unstoppable in 2013!

    • Jack Hammer says:

Jacobs won’t play a down this year unless there is an injury, or they have everything wrapped up for the finale.

  13. Neal says:

Funny how DS left this blog for a few days when the Niners were evaulating PM and now he is gone again with the CK drama, what happens with his famous quote in Jim Harbaugh I trust. Let’s pray for DS and the other Smithers who are AS fans first and Niner fans second. A moment of silence please.
