Doctor gives opinion on what Harbaugh’s heart procedure may be

I’ve been in contact with a doctor, asking him what this minor heart procedure for Jim Harbaugh might be. The doctor wrote back, stressing that this is a rough guess based on very limited data. He wrote:

“Could be a pacemaker. Doubt it is a catherization procedure, no one would consider that minor. Could be a cardioversion, where they use electrical current to change an irregular atrial rate to a regular rate.”

And not to be rude, but even though we might be curious, it is none of our business

Thank you for saying this. He’s not an elected official, still a private citizen. Wish him well but stop prying

  2. Adam says:

Electricity most likely. Pacemaker wouldn’t be minor, anything invasive certainly wouldn’t be minor.

  3. Grimey9er says:

It’s only minor if it’s not happening to you.
My dad had the electricity thing done to him and he was fine after just tired the rest of the day.

I have two family members that had that procedure. Irregular heart beat, or murmur.
Don’t know about going back to NFL sidelines immediately after that procedure….

  5. Coffee's for closers says:

Seems like a moot point. The PR director already mentioned that they expect him back tomorrow which clearly indicates that whatever they did it was “minor” enough that he can come back to work in less then 24 hours.

What was the point of following this up with a doctor, I’m curious?

    • Coffee's for closers says:

Easy answer here, would Harbaugh have an elective surgery or procedure if it meant him missing a game? Obviously not.

    • Grant Cohn says:

I think it’s always good to clarify things. Isn’t that what a news man does?

      • Coffee's for closers says:

I thought a news ‘person’ was supposed to sniff out stories and I was curious why you thought there was a story here and didn’t believe the PR director when they called it minor and that he’d be back tomorrow?

      • La-La Land says:

Yes, thanks for the extra efforts, Grant.

      • 9ersince71 says:

Should have just asked your Dad,he is always up in coaches business.

Going to a doctor is a good move. Not something most people would think of. It is original, and that matters a LOT. Great job there.

The part you messed up was to not confirm first what the procedure JH had done. You NEED to do that first. Then, contact the doctor to get his opinion about the procedure you KNOW JH had. I would call it fact checking before making it public. Something that show FRONTLINE does, which makes it a dependable source of information.

      • bob bairstow says:

I agree.Just what is their definition of minor? But certainly it is a private matter.Just curious about his health.Hoping this “minor procedure”corrects what is wrong.

    • dangle says:

I was curious and I’m glad grant followed up. Hope for everyone’s sake that it truly is minor. And lets be real, how many times do reporters get trashed for listening to and relying on the word of a PR director?

guess which category you guys fall into. give ya a gold star sticker if you can remember which movie the quote is from, it’s not very difficult.

What your review does not include, nor do you know with any degree of certainty, is a.) on the 3-step drop, CK is ready to bring out the ball, but nobody is open, so instinctively, CK begins to explore other options rather than sitting there on a 3-step drop and peeling and eating the ball like a banana; b.) on the play you critique him for not seeing and hitting Kyle Williams in the crease, you have no idea from where his progression was to begin. Unless you sat in on the QB meetings, you have no idea of where GR told him to begin his progression. If was told to start at point A, how can you criticize a QB if point C happens to come open from a blown coverage when you are looking at the other side of the field as instructed by your OC? Unless you know the complete play; protection; progression; primary receiver down to the check-down, you only can guesstimate and assume!!!!!!!!!!!! We all know what that means!!!!!!!!

    • dangle says:

I like the phrase “hesitant to trust his protection.” It seems like a good description and its very understandable given his lack of experience and his front row view of watching alex get crushed and sacked a ton.

  7. rebelscum says:

Could you imangine if Harbaugh was the Captain of the Titanic? I am sure he would of addressed the crew and passengers with” we hit a minor Ice cube and we are working through something!” Heart conditions and minor have nothing in common!

  8. The Grinch says:

Grant…Seems like theyre seems to be some discontent developing in the locker room..Look at Brandon Jacobs tweet about hating his boss and then it was re tweeted by LM. James..

  9. Neal says:

Last night I watched the 84 and 94 49er Super Bowl games. I just don’t see us in the same calibre as those teams, our offense has improved since last year, but that is not saying much and our special teams and defense have gotten worse.

  10. yt says:

It could be “re-setting” heart by an electrical shock under general. My husband has the same situation and it was one of option givien by doctors.

  11. jerry bitler says:

We are lucky to have Jim as coach of 49ers,best wishes to his family, team and friends. Nobody has it better than 49er fans with JH at the helm.

  12. j says:

It’s called an Ablation. Had it done in 2008. Was home the next day, didn’t feel much like working, though. Not really minor though. They put you out, strap you down, place 5 catheters in you at various points on your body. He’d be nuts to go back to his grueling schedule the next day. And if his doctors OK it, then they are nuts.

  13. Ted Sillanpaa says:

    Nice reporting work, Grant.

  14. Sarge says:

JH does not play the front line. he coaches.. if its minor, then its minor.. 9er fans are looking at alex smith right now. he did dress in a black no contact jersey yesterday. Leave JH alone… he has assistants in place to take care of biz. We are looking at a marque game next monday night with two back up qb’s. This is not what disney, espn or abc wanted to see. JH only gets two minutes of tv time all game long… So lets go watch a ho hum monday night with two backup qb’s

  15. Cobalt says:

Good reporting. I’m sure by tomorrow this will all be cleared up.

  16. Sarge says:

Hoping JH is back to work and all is minor… would make all a moot point/ but niners have issues with their blunder all tie last week with a team they should have handled very easily. They never gave up yards on the ground like they did to Rams RBs. And then thru the air? Gotta get the D back to ground zero… and yes.. we need JH even from the booth. Sarge

  17. Michael Burgess says:

I had the same thing, 1st they do the cardioversion to see if they can kick start it back to normal. They put you on blood thinners like Warfarin or one of the newer ones, then they dose you with drugs like Amiodarone, Atenanol and digoxin,`to see if it will stay in the right mode. Failing that theres a choice to do a pacemaker. At his age I would be surprised to see them do a pacemaker without everything else 1st.
