What we learned Week 9

Here are three things I learned Sunday:

  1. The Arizona Cardinals are done. They’ve lost five straight games, they have a Bye next week and after that they have to play the Falcons. Good luck. I’d be shocked if the Cardinals won two more games the rest of the season.
  2. The Seahawks are hanging tough – they beat the Vikings today. But Seattle has to play the Dolphins and the Bears on the road the next few weeks. The Seahawks need to win those games and beat the 49ers in Seattle Week 15 to have a shot at the playoffs.
  3. The 49ers’ biggest competitor for a first-round Bye is probably the Chicago Bears, not the New York Giants. The Giants lost by four points to the Pittsburgh Steelers today, and now New York is 6-3. Meanwhile, the Bears beat the Titans by 31. Chicago is 7-1, a game ahead of the 49ers for the No.2 seed in the NFC. The two teams play each other two weeks from Monday night at Candlestick Park. The winner will have the inside track to a playoff Bye.

What did you learn today?

That I’m terrible at picking upset specials.

  2. Jack Hammer says:

Big loss for NY today and Eli played terrible. 49ers need to take care of business Sunday and that Bears game will be a good one.

    • 23Jordan/ Claude is a Clown says:

      Jack,

Bears are overrated. Their schedule has been weak. They’ve not played anyone. As long as that o line of theirs can’t protect cutler, we can handle them.

    • MJ says:

Eli played terrible? Guess he isn’t really elite since he had some bad games this year…time to consider getting his back up ready……….

      • msclemons67 says:

Nice try MJ but you’re forgetting one thing. Eli has 2 super bowl rings. He gets the benefit of the doubt.

Your hero hasn’t even matched Mark Sanchez yet.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        2 Super Bowls MJ…

      • Neal says:

Your talking about last year Super Bowl winner. You can’t compare a lobster, to a Big Mac.

      • Prime Time says:

And nobody knows Big Macs than a fat, lazy douche like you Neal.

      • Neal says:

That is hilarious Axel, Prime, Slime, Foley, Messa Butterball turkey lips Welcher. I have never had a Big Mac, workout 6 days a week and have 10% body fat. How about you? Don’t get much of a work out sleeping on your Mommy couch. I suppose. Spineless phony.

      • Prime Time says:

10%? That’s not good enough. I guess when you are unemployed and welfaring off the government ( your a socialist right) It’s easy to workout 6 times a week.

      • Neal says:

13 1/2 years at same job, Top 2 Reps in the company, total of 105 reps. Whatever loser

      • Prime Time says:

Neal take it easy, I’m just busting your chops, don’t take this so serious. I never asked for a biography. I’m kidding and like I really care. Now go workout and release that anger.

      • Neal says:

I already worked out, and you are always condenscending and going after me, so now you are joking, whatever dude.

      • Prime Time says:

I wont say I was joking when I say your dumb when it comes to football, but all this other bantering Im totally just busting your hump. You take it all seriously which makes it funny.
Maybe finish off the day with some abs so you can feel all tight going into Monday am. Good night douche!

      • Neal says:

        Goodnight Axel,
        Good Night Prime,
        Goodnight Slime
        Goodnight Foley,
        Goodnight Messa
        Goodnight Butterball turkey lips
        Goodnight Welcher

      • MidWestNiner says:

The new generation of the Waltons now airing on Grant Cohn’s blog.

      • Neal says:

        MWN,

They all are Prime Time phony Smither family, he has alot of imaginary friends, and he is playing all of them, and probably more.

      • MidWestNiner says:

Trust me. I know Neal. I remember when he called himself his twin brother. I was seriously thinking he should have started with “Axel, my schizophrenic self”.

      • Neal says:

        lol @MWN,

I actually feel sorry for him, he is easy to figure out, behind his arrogance and insults, is a lonely insecure person, that is probably lonely and has no Thanksgiving plans.

      • MidWestNiner says:

        Probably right Neal.

      • AngusinCanada says:

RE: “Eli played terribly, so we better get the back-up ready” comment by MJ.

Brilliant. MSC, Jack, and others say “nice try, Eli’s won 2 superbowls”. That’s not the point. The point is that every qb has good games, and bad games. You hold Smith to an impossible standard with your “can he do it consistently” crap. If he played every game like the ‘Zona game, he’d be not only “elite”, he’d be the best athlete ever to play organized sports in the history of the world”.

He’s playing very well, and as consistently as anybody else in the league. Take a look at his completion % and his YPA. Both in the top handful of qb’s in the league. You don’t get there by not being consistent (consistent is not the same as perfect, which, as Eli just demonstrated, isn’t possible).

      • Coffee's for closers says:

        I’m gonna make a lobster big-mac

  3. Razoreater says:

I think the 49er Defense can get inside Cutlers head along with the front seven dominating the Bears offensive line. Conversely, the 49er offensive line should be able to wear down the Bears’ defensive front seven.

  4. DS94everXev says:

    Grant

Where are the posts discussing EM’s horrid two game QBR? The ones where he stinks it up against good defenses, and only looks great against bad defenses. The ones giving the stat line going into the 4th quarter with 9/20, 124 yards and Int. Should the Giants trade for CK who is more athletic and can make plays by himself a lot better than EM can?

Or do we make the sensible conclusion that every QB has good and bad games, and having 2 in a row but still managing 1 win is what happens to good teams?

    • Neal says:

DS, I know you like to compare QB’s, you constanly compare JM to AS, one has 4 Super Bowls and one has none. EM had a bad game but he won 2 super bowls and your main squeeze has won NONE.

      • MJ says:

Winning in football is a team sport, especially a SB. How hard is that for EVERYONE to comprehend. Montana, as great as he was, would have been nothing had he played for the Lions, Bucs, Jets, Saints, Vikings and many other horrible teams of the 1980s. You know that to be true. So just accept the fact that the 49ers of the 00′s, outside of 2002 and 2001, were horrendous and were as bad as those teams of the 80s or 90s. So why is it hard for everyone to accept that the 49ers sucked before smith and sucked with him and it was more than him. If Eli played here, the way those teams were being run, he would have been nothing more than a waste of a pick. Put Alex on the Giants from 2005 til now, with the consistency and quality of players and coaches, and he is being viewed in a much different light. Does he win a sb or two, who knows, but he would be a winning qb.

      • Prime Time says:

Why you ask MJ? Cause you are speaking to lazy fantasy football fans where the box score tells them more than actually watchin the games. They don’t understand the game outside of stats. Their whole arguement consists of numbers. Not scheme, not draft picks, not continuity, not talent, and definately not the team concept that is so vital in the game of football.

      • Neal says:

I doubt that he would be a winner and win 2 super bowls. He would be long gone from the media and the fans and the Giants would of kicked precious to the curb after 2 seasons max.

      • MidWestNiner says:

He would’ve had a consistent offense all around Neal so yeah I can see it. But I’d rather not focus on what if. Instead it’ll be the soon-to-be Super Bowl Champs, the Niners!

      • DS94everXev says:

        MJ

Sorry, but everything after “How hard is that for eveybody to comprehend…” is being blocked by the PD filter. Please repeat.

If anybody actually thought about it on one side, there would be no 2 sides.

        Prime

You’re wrong. EM has had 2 bad stat days in a row, and didn’t even complete half his passes today or get remotely near 200 yards passing (Didn’t wuss boy make some kind of a statement regarding QB’s who can’t throw at least 200? EM barely got over the 100 yard mark). So, stats now mean nothing to those people. And it will remain that way till his stats are great again. Then stats will matter again and they will act like the bad stat days never happened at all.

      • Neal says:

        True MWN,

I am not convinced the Niners will win a Super Bowl, AS and Roman are both a concerned and I love the team, except the QB and offensive coordinator. Both can be outstandiing but both can be inconsistent as well. Each week you just don’t know what you are going to get.

      • MidWestNiner says:

I had them as my Super Bowl winner during the preseason and not much has changed my belief in that. I will agree that Smith and Roman are inconsistent, but as history has shown, they just need to get consistent at the right time to win it all. I believe they will. Go Niners!

  5. msclemons67 says:

I enjoyed watching the Giants lose in spite of the zebras giving them 14 points.

Andrew Luck went nuts today – just incredible. That’s what you expect from a #1 pick. Imagine how good he’ll be after 7 years of excuses.

Doug Martin might be the real deal. He’s definitely done more than AJ Jenkins who was chosen one pick ahead of Martin.

JJ Watt is a young Justin Smith. He’s taken the title of best 3-4 DE.

The Green Bay Packers don’t even pretend to run the ball. That might work against crappy teams like the Cardinals but it will hurt them in the playoffs.

    The Raiders are simply cursed.

Much like the 49ers, when the Ravens remember to run the ball they’re pretty darned good.

Chicago’s D and ST are scary. Can they carry Cutler to a championship?

Russel Wilson had a nice Alex Smith type game. As a rookie, not an 8th year player. Pete Carroll continues his trend of stealing Harbaugh’s ideas.

    • Jack Hammer says:

I said on day 2 of the draft that Indy is playoff bound. 10-6 or 11-5 is quite doable with their remaining schedule. What a difference a franchise QB makes.

      • msclemons67 says:

I liked Luck coming out but I didn’t think he’d be this good. Especially considering the Colts running game is a dumpster fire.

Playoffs? Right now I can see the Colts grabbing a wild card.

If the Colts meet the Broncos in the playoffs we’ll need umbrellas. The ejaculate from network execs will blot out the sun.

      • rocket says:

While anything is possible I don’t see the Colts making the playoffs. They have 2 games left against the Texans, they play the Pats and Lions on the road and… well not this year. Luck has been fantastic though.

      • Jack Hammer says:

We’ll see where they stand come January.

    • MJ says:

Doug Martin is a rb playing for a team that had no legit rb. AJ Jenkins, a wr, came to a team that had Crabtree at 1, and just picked up Moss and Manningham, not to mention Ginn and Williams fighting for playing time. Jenkins lack of production isnt a slight to him, its a compliment to the niners depth at their position. Would you rather the Niners had drafted Martin? He still wouldnt be playing…signed LaMichael James.

      • msclemons67 says:

Reuben Randle is seeing significant snaps for a the Giants – a team with far better WR depth than the 49ers.

      • Brady says:

NYG does not have better depth than the Niners at WR. They have a dominant 1-2 combo, but no depth after that. We have their #3, Manningham, and he was initially slated as tied with 2 others for #3.

Do NOT conflate top talent with depth.

      • Neal says:

Who cares about depth, can we beat them in a Playoff game is a big question.

      • msclemons67 says:

        Nicks, Cruz, Hixon, Bardon, Randle

Compare that to Crabtree, Manningham, old Moss, Kyle Williams. Oh yeah, and Jenkins on the inactive list.

Giants have more talent and more depth at WR and yet their rookie is seeing game action. Unless you consider Ted Ginn (and his family) quality depth?

      • Neal says:

Good points MSC, plus Eli two time Super Bowl winner and a great head coach too.

      • MidWestNiner says:

The main reason the rookie WR has taken significant snaps has been due to Nicks being on the mend for most of the season’s beginning MSC.

One thing that also needs to be taken into consideration with the Giants Neal is their recent history of utterly collapsing in the second half despite their loaded roster. Is the loss to the Steelers a sign of that happening again? Time will tell.

      • BOS49er says:

        MSC
Randle has 9 catches that were all caught in 3 games He gets his time as a returner and he isn’t setting the world on fire with that. Plus the giants go multiple WR much more often than we do so there is a greater opportunity to play.
As for martin, he is a beast but would he have beaten out FG KH BJ for playing time?

      • Brady says:

I personally do not see Hixon and Bardon as being better than Manningham and Williams.

That is depth. Cruz and Nicks does not pertain to depth.

But Hixon and Bardon are not as good of a 3-4 punch as Manningham and Williams, especially when you consider that Manning is the Giants QB.

      • rocket says:

        msc,

The Giants have used Randle sparingly on offense the past few games once Nicks returned from injury. I’ll ask you the same thing I ask everytime someone brings up the fact that Jenkins and LMJ are inactive every week: who are you going to deactivate for them? They don’t play because they aren’t needed. It has nothing to do with how good they are. They’ve got better players in front of them; it’s that simple. Next season when Moss and Ginn are likely gone, Jenkins will become a bigger factor as will LMJ when Gore is gone.

  6. undercenter says:

Didnt really learn anything today. Already knew the Cards suck, already knew the Hawks were tough. Depending on the outcome of tonights game if the Niners might have a chance at the best record. That elite QB, Eli, the one so loved by some many on this board – stunk today. Even the Elite Manning had some problems today. Luck as we all know is really good. Hated to see the Redskins lose to the Panthers. Can anyone stop the Ducks besides the computer?

    • DS94everXev says:

If AS can’t come back and EM can always come back, why have the Giants lost 3 and Niners 2 games?

      • Adam707 says:

Please refrain from comparing Smith to QB’s like the Mannings

      • DS94everXev says:

        Why?

What are you going to do? You know when AS wins it this year, he’ll = PM’s titles and be just 1 behind EM, right?

The only people insulted by comparing AS to EM/PM/QB x are fans who can’t get over themselves. It doesn’t insult you, or your team or your morals, so why care?

The players don’t care. Like Bill Murray said at the end of “Kingpin”

“What do I care I’m rich!”

It’s a blog. The players are rich. Doing what we all wanted to do at one point. Are married to hotties. I somehow think the Mannings could care less about me comparing them to AS (who by the way I bet like him as a player more than you do) or you defending them. It’s a Niner blog, so what do you expect? Me to hate the guy? Me not to cheer for my guy instead of some other teams guy?

Not going to happen. Not in this lifetime. If this sounds like a homer post, it is. That is what fans are supposed to do. Not call it even. I call it even between teams/players I don’t care for. That iswhat fan means.

  7. Adam707 says:

I learned that Doug Martin is an absolute studddddd

    • MidWestNiner says:

Good article Jack. If teams keep focusing in on the run, do you think the Niners’ passing will develop enough to where th opposing defenses will have to pick their poison?

      • Jack Hammer says:

Thanks MidWest. I think that it is already there. The key on Monday was Roman sticking with the run which kept the Cardinals off balance throughout the first half and that first drive of the second. They are so effective with their 2 TE sets both running and passing that it creates quite a problem for the defense. On Monday Arizona only went Nickle a few times, they were either in base or the 4-4 almost the entire game and I think that was due to the 2 TE personnel. It also helped with the YAC, because there weren’t as many defenders downfield to stop the WR’s.

      • rocket says:

Excellent as usual Jack. I really hope Roman has learned his lesson about sticking with the run no matter what he thinks the oppositions weakness is. This team functions best as a balanced attack and Smith seems to play more confidently when he has the run game going.

    • ronaldo says:

Must be depressing seeing your blog hits constantly in single digits.

      • AK49erfan says:

You talking about the view counter on Jack’s page that’s at 8,899? Easy to be a critic hiding behind a computer…. how many hits does your blog have, Ron?

      • AngusinCanada says:

Ronaldo, why don’t you change your name to “Bitter wet blanket”?

    • dangle says:

      nice read jack

      • dangle says:

I would have said that on your site, but i don’t know what any of those login things are, and its just so much easier to comment here

  8. AES says:

I learned only one thing that gnaws away at me.
The NYG’ seem to have our number.

Chicago and Atlanta will be a tough win for any opponent, but I still believe that the road to the SB will still go through NY.

When we beat the NYG’ during the regular season last year, AS and VD had a good game and our defense was light’s out.

If we meet the Giants in the playoffs again, the same cast of characters will need to come to the forefront.

I like the lessons learned by all the posters here and I certainly hope I’m proven wrong about the Giants.

    • BOS49er says:

      AES
The biggest difference I saw betwen the giants games last year and this year (besides the 3 ints) was the lack of pass rush. In the playoffs Eli was crushed repeatedly and even when he wasn’t sacked he was hit or running for his life. This year he had a lot more time to pick out his receivers.
I dont think they have out number. We played 2 close games and one that got away from us a bit but it wasn’t an overwhelming domination where we cant see the light at the end of the tunnel. If we continue to run the ball we should be ok. Redmon from the steelers ran all over them I cant see any reason (besides lack of touches) why FG wouldnt do the same

      • FDM says:

And it might be better to play them at home where they seem to be more vulnerable. That does not sound like it makes sense but they seem to play better on the road than they do at home.
The Giants are a good team, battle tested. But they can be run on and its something we got away from this year in playing them. ATL scares me if we have to play them at home. This week CHI faces HOU which will show us how for real the Bears are. After that, there is no one else in the NFC that is as good as the 49ers. We are built for the playoffs.

      • AES* says:

        Good point Bos49er.

Our D-line did not put much pressure on the G-men in our last meeting and Eli had too much time to find opened WR’s.

But I happen to believe that their D was much better in the last game then they were in the championship game.

They did a very good job on not allowing the flow of our running game to develop and kept enough pressure on AS to throw him off rhythm.

They also set the blueprint for stopping CK7 by rushing a defensive player directly to the left flank where CK virtually ran right into them like a trapped rabbit.

Honestly, the NYG’ are the only team that gives me pause. Their coaching staff seems to put good game plans and also put their players in great position to keep us off track.

I hope I’m wrong about them, but right now they seem to our thorn.

      • AngusinCanada says:

We were the better team in the 1st half of that last game. We had a few breaks not go our way, then a bad start to the 3rd quarter, and just deflated (and forgot we’re a power running team).

  9. MidWestNiner says:

I learned that the Texans aren’t as dangerous as I once thought.

  10. MidWestNiner says:

It’s early, but it’s looking like the Falcons will remain undefeated .

    • DS94everXev says:

Then lose in their first postseason game.

    • BOS49er says:

      MWN
No way. They still have 5 division games (they beat Car by only 2 on a last second FG) and we all know how tough they are no matter the opositions record. then they have NYG and Det as well. They have been living dangerously all season and eventually a bounce wont go their way like it has been going so far. Either way the prospect of facing ATL in the playyofs isnt that frightening.
After all how good is their QB if he has less playoff wins than one Alex Smith

    • MidWestNiner says:

I was saying that they were going to defeat the Cowboys last night guys. I think the Falcons will lose at least games before the end of the season.

  11. Jack Hammer says:

We also learned that the Cowboys are once again “America’s Most Over-Hyped Team”

  12. tkamB says:

I learned that having a 60 point lead in fantasy football isn’t good enough when your opponent’s two remaining players are going against the Raiders defense.

    • msclemons67 says:

You aren’t the only person who got Doug Martin’d. Ouch.

Even though he killed me the kid was fun to watch. Great vision and good strength. Plus, he killed the Raiders at the same time so that eased the pain.

  13. Coffee's for closers says:

The ref that was swearing on the field with his microphone on reminded me of those Southwest Airlines commercials, “wanna get away?”

  14. southy says:

I learn’t the steelers are doing a good job playing niner ball. Big Ben is healthy because he throws more short passes.

The falcons will lose in the playoffs game (their running game is not consistent)

The bears will lose in the playoffs because of cutlers interceptions

The packers will not go anywhere or far because of injuries

The giants will fall as the playoffs get closer (I see them losing to teams with losing records in december)

The cowboys and seahawks are holding on to the last straw

The bucs, vikings and eagles will play the upset roles as the playoffs get closer

And the niners will face the steelers in the superbowl. Match up of the dink and dunk offense.

  15. 49erGirl says:

We learned that Pittsburgh should not be discounted.

We learned Peyton Manning is still awesome, but so is his replacement in Indy.

We learned the Giants and Texans have weaknesses.

We learned the bye week sucks because there was no Niner game this weekend!!

And – we also learned that Usain Bolt (cough cough….Crabs) can be caught and passed. :-)

  16. ribico says:

I learned that Mike Shanahan is a defeatist schmuck and am happy as hell he is nowhere near our team or coaching staff.

Oh wait, he’s won Super Bowls so he must be great.

  17. ribico says:

I also learned that a ball control passing game, sticking to a running game they can’t stop, and great special teams play is the blueprint on what it takes to beat the Giants.

In other words, a Niner-style game plan is what it takes. Now if only the Niners will stick to a Niner-style game plan the next time these two team meet.

    • DS94everXev says:

      + A really big number.

Twice in a row we haven’t put forth our philosophy against the Giants. They can’t beat us if we do.

  18. Houston 9er says:

I learned that the Texans don’t play that well coming off a bye week. This has been the norm for this team. I learned the Texans have problems at LB sine they lost Cushing.

I learned that I’m too old for paintball with a bunch of vicious 13 year old boys. I learned that paintballs can actually break skin. I learned to never try to be a hero on a paintball map. I learned that getting bunkered isn’t too fun and can result in bruises in very unfortunate places. I learned it’s alot safer watching 49er football than trying to keep up with teenagers.

    • AngusinCanada says:

      Hah!
The beauty of paintball is that it hurts enough that you take not getting hit seriously.
Texans D is over-rated, I think. Their offense is not, I love their running game.

  19. Coffee's for closers says:

I learned that the wheels have come off of the Big-D mobile. Locking JJ out of the locker room shows how little respect this team has for their owner. If they don’t even want him in the room what makes you think any of them want to win for him?

  20. SourdoughSam says:

Who learned you how to spoke?
The Niners are looking strong heading into the second half of the season!

  21. BOS49er says:

I learned that if redmon can run all over the giants FG probably can too its just too bad that we gave up on the run game when we played em.

  22. Rick says:

I learned the Raiders desperately need a couple of linebackers like Willis and Bowman. It is simply disgraceful to allow a rookie running back to morph into Walter Payton.

I learned that Carson Palmer is another Steve DeBerg. Plays just good enough to get you beat.

I learned that Shad Khan is probably wishing he had stuck to the Auto parts business. Khan is no doubt learning that it is a lot easier to get rid of a unproductive worker in your factory than an unproductive Quarterback on your NFL team. All Smith haters should be made to watch the tape of yesterday’s Jacksonville Detroit game. If you think Smith is bad, you have not seen Blaine Gabbert.

I learned that the Niners need to figure out a way to take Marshall out of the game when they play the Bears Nov 19. The Bears passing attack is a one man show. Minus Marshall, they have below average receivers.

  23. Coffee's for closers says:

I should have waited until tomorrow but I wanted to get it in just in case Crab ties it back up tonight ;)

    • MidWestNiner says:

Congrats 49ergirl. As for me, all I can say is not too bad considering I joined one week late.

  24. old coach says:

There must be 20 different posts calling this team or that team over rated. i’m begining to get the feeling that there is’nt a single great team this year. in fact there might not be a single very good team this year. the nfl is becoming a watered down salary cap shadow of its past. i love my niners and have for over a half of a century but i enjoys my saturdays and ncaa football so much more. once the ncaa breaksdown and creates a 16 team playoff college football will totally eclipse the nfl.

  25. BOS9er says:

Learned that Touchdown Jesus must have been working some major overtime to help Notre Dame pull one out of their behinds and that USC should crush them.
Learned that Marquise Lee is an absolute beast and I would give my left leg to see him in a 9ers uniform, too bad hel probably go top 5.
If not M.Lee that Id love to have Jesse Williams from bama as our next NT that dude is monstrous and I read somwhere that he benches 600 lbs

Bama vs Oregon would be a great game of contrasting styles and I hope the computers dont deprive us of that opportunity.

And Most importantly i learned…… the true meaning of christmass…No im just kidding, I learned that when the 9ers dont play and this blog isnt dedicated to trashing or defending AS the hate and vitriol is gone and we can have a great discussion about football without name calling or personal attacks (with few exceptions)

  26. old coach says:

@BOS9er you big dumb jerk [only kidding] The Irish will beat USC in a close game the Trojans fold against physical defenses and i agree ore alabama would be a great game but i think K st may be better than both of them.

    • rocket says:

The domers are a fraud. Good defense, not so good offense and no chance of staying with the big boys. Brian Kelly has done a great job but they are not at that level yet.

I thought Oregon would be in tough if they had to play Alabama, now I’m not so sure. That Redshirt QB they have is the best I’ve seen in the Chip Kelly era. Their defense is questionable but that offense could score on anybody.

      • MJ says:

People have been saying ND is a fraud since week 2. And yet they still find ways to win. Does a fraud take a team that never loses twice at home in a season and who were averaging over 40 pts a game to just 13 pts and under 20 rush yards?

If a close game vs a lesser opponent makes you think someone is a fraud, go back and look at Auburn when they won the nat title, go look at their game vs Duke or Clemson…

      • rocket says:

        MJ,

A fraud as a contender for the National Championship, not as a team that has played well. I said Kelly has done a great job and he has, but he doesn’t have the talent to stay with an Alabama or Oregon imo.

      • msclemons67 says:

If Notre Dame has to play a tough school Brian Kelly will strategically place scissor lifts near the opponent’s sideline.

That guy shouldn’t have a job coaching anywhere in the USA.

    • BOS9er says:

      Coach
The irish are tough up the middle but i just see USC goin 3 wide and throwing it around all day marginalizing Teo. Plus gholson is erratic for every great play there is a head scratcher the next.
K state will prob win out although TCU should put up a good fight i just dont see them doing it vs an elite bama D. State vs Oregon could be another baylor w vigrinia game where we have a 70-63 score but I dont see bama loosing to make that happen.

I will agree that on any given saturday there is a better slate of good games than on sunday but thats because there is 120 teams not just 32 plus they get 80 scholarships so they can stockpile great players more so than the nfl. The thing i like about colege is that u see so many contrasting styles u have a run and shoot team play a team like Georgia tech who runs the tripple option where as the NFL is much more homogenous

      • old coach says:

@Bos also the nfl TV policy is horrible. yesterday for example the 9ers have a bye and the raiders sold out why did’nt we get 4 games to choose from instead of 2

  27. rocket says:

I learned that Peyton Manning threw 18 passes within 5 yards of the LOS and is the YPA leader; Smith is 5th. For those obsessed with the distance a pass travels, it doesn’t matter. It’s about getting the ball to the guy in best position to make a play.

I learned that Peter King is a Smither.

I learned that even when the team has a week off after a great performance, the endless Smith debate continues on unabated.

    • BOS9er says:

      rocket
but its with much better discourse and less insults.
      kinda nice dont u think?

      • rocket says:

        Bos,

Take a look at the Manningham thread and tell me if you think there’s been less insults, discourse or just complete mindless garbage. That entire thread was hijacked by the drama Queens who can’t help but carry on like 10 year olds.

      • Prime Time says:

You know Rocket, the long winded, try and keep it football related comments just does not seem to work with the haters. It s been tried, yourself included and what has been the result? The same tired arguement over and over again. So if you want them running their mouths with all their garbage, then let’s see what happens to the blog.

      • FDM says:

Prime I get what you are saying I think about policing ourselves. But you will never change or convince or be able to reason with some on here.
I know, I have tried and its really hopeless. I say let them voice their hate, winning is all that matters.

      • rocket says:

        Prime,

The difference is, I and others don’t resort to the sewer approach response that you all do to each other. It’s junk from both sides. It’s school yard insults. It’s mindless and pointless. Both sides continue because they get reactions and attention. If you really cared about the quality of the blog you’d stop responding to it, but I don’t think you can. All of you seem to get off on this sh*t.

      • rocket says:

        Bay,

Read my response again and tell me how you come to the conclusion that I’m supporting Prime? I’m telling both sides to give it a rest already. The entire board is filled with these pointless flame wars – Prime included – and it’s getting tiresome to wade through.

I’ll ask you the same thing Bay: if you know he’s baiting you then why respond? What satisfaction do you get out of this when it never ends?

I’m not supporting anyone. I think both sides need to grow the hell up.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Interesting response Rocket. I drew the line when Primetrash continued to call the boys on my team girls.
Hang out and converse with trash long enough and you begin to smell like it.

      • rocket says:

Then draw the line by not responding to him Bay. That is what I’m saying. If he offends you that much, then don’t give him the satisfaction of a response.

      • Prime Time says:

DS is right Bay, you are a wuss. You can dish it but when it’s back to you, you cry to Grant. No one was making fun of kids, just you.
The crying game, that’s all you do!

    • JDilla says:

I learned Eli Manning, Matt Shaub, Jay Cutler and Joe Flacco have only thrown 12 TDs or less each this season. All will be playing in the postseason and have a good chance to reach the superbowl.
