The 49ers just announced nine of their players have made the Pro Bowl. Seven players will start. They are FS Dashon Goldson, LG Mike Iupati, LB Aldon Smith, DT Justin Smith, LT Joe Staley, SS Donte Whitner and LB Patrick Willis.
LB NaVorro Bowman and RB Frank Gore will come off the bench.
Eight 49ers have also been named Pro Bowl alternates. They are RG Alex Boone, LB Ahmad Brooks, OT Anthony Davis, TE Vernon Davis, C Jonathan Goodwin, P Andy Lee, CB Carlos Rogers and C.J. Spillman.
Notice that all five offensive linemen and all four linebackers made the team or are alternates.
Also, notice that Carlos Rogers is an alternate over Tarell Brown, and Vernon Davis is an alternate over Michael Crabtree. Were Brown and Crabtree snubbed? Should they have been alternates instead of Rogers and Davis? Why or why not?

First of all kudos to all 17. We have 17 pro bowlers and we still have huge questions about the team. Something is wrong somewhere. I have been on JH bandwagon from the begining but this team should of won a minimum 13 games this year with this talent, its on the entire coaching staff. One thing we dont have is a Pro Bowl QB. I just look at the number 17 and just shake my head. Big kudos to Alex Boone, way to go.
Nice to see Boone get recognized. Usually O-Linemen have to be good for a few years before they get a Pro-Bowl nod. Looks like Boone has made an impression.
Great post UC…I wold venture to guess that next season we’ll have both guards on the Pro Bowl roster.
Where is the disconnect?…17 49er’s named to the Pro Bowl, and this team is struggling to get a 1st round bye. The is too much talent on this roster for them not to have dominated this season.
Disconnect… its simple we have very good players overall but a lot of them are playing positions that are just not that important any more. QB is the most important position on the field, Then comes the playmaking position, WR, DE, CB… I would argue that we have one great player in those 4 catagories that player being Aldon Smith. note I was counting Justin as a DT as that is more like the PB equivalant of 3-4 end.
Shoupbj….
I’ll take your comment as is…..there is not one position on the field that is ‘just not that important anymore’….fact of the matter is, they’re all important…..QB gets the most attention..the disconnect is in the coaching, play calling and decision making during games.
Rogers sucks. Vernon is not as good as Celek.
Celek reminds me of Brent Jones, but to say that Celek is better then Vernon Davis is ridiculous, reminds me of DS saying Dilfer is better then Marino because Dilfer won a Super Bowl. Every GM in the league would take Davis over Celek.
Neal
As for the VD / Celek debate being akin to Dilfer / Marino …
It’s more like Druckenmiller / Plummer … one had great measurables but was dumb as rocks while the other had a feel for the game and came up in big moments. Not that VD is as bad as Druckenmiller, because obviously he’s a very very good tight end, but I was just making a point. If VD were as awe-inspiring in games as he is in the gym, he’d be the best of all-time, but he is nothing more than half of the Twinvisibles at this point. Let him prove me wrong again these playoffs, please!!!
Mr. E.
I like Celek but the sample size is way to small to compare him to VD. Celek can be a stud but to early to tell.
E-dude. You’re offering some ‘interesting’ takes today. VD sucks? SY was average?
Delanie Walker sucks too, add Moss in that as well as he looks to have lost several steps.
Mr E,
Looks like you live in the moment, and just see a small portion of one’s work, meaning your just looking at the passing game of these players, VD, DW and RM also block pretty darn good, which for some plays is as important as catching a ball. Calling Steve Young average, kind of losing credibility. SY undoubtedly the 10 QB’s that ever played the game. I would put in 7 or 8 of all time, and is a Hall of Famer.
Neal-VD and DW are slow getting in and out of their routes, they are just average with no leaping ability.
Steve Young played on very good teams and took forever to finally win. He was overrated too.
MR E,
The entire team is very slow in that category. That is why I would like Jenkins to play, the guy is very fast.
The pink starfish Avatar is an impostor.
Delanie is probably unique in the league for his multi-faceted utility and Moss is the most talented WR to ever play the game.
But VD is overrated and so is Steve Young.
Jenkins is fast but still a rookie. We have no idea how good or bad he is. We are most likely one and done in the playoffs because we are a banged up squad.
Don’t think we are one and done, most likely we will have a home game with a wild card team, and feel confident we will get our act together for that game, plus we are a good road team.
Bowman and Gore are not starters…
Right so Gore is the third back. Bowman will not start because the Pro Bowl defense is a 4-3 technique. Means Patrick will start then Bowman will take over.
The 49ers have 9 pro bowlers 7 of which are starters. The others are “alternates” and therefore are NOT Pro Bowlers unless someone ahead of them drops out.
i dont think youre correct. There are 3 running backs selected for each conference, so 3 rb are pro bowlers. Same with 2 ILB…..
Yes. And the 49ers have 9 of them total. “Alternates” are not pro bowlers. By example the 4th NFC RB is an alternate but not a pro bowler unless one if the three (Gore, AP, or Lynch) drops out.
wow, and congratulations to a lot of great football players.
I owe Boone a “personal” apology for doubting he’d be the solution at G. Some others might owe A. Davis one too!
Grant, any second thots on the “demote Rogers” idea? No worries either way…Pro Bowl votes aren’t perfect indicators…altho they are useful.
I still think he should be the No.3 CB on the team, and moved out of the slot. What do you think?
You funny guy Grant Cohn.
**CB**
Thanks. I’m Typo Magoo today.
Grant,
Thought you were cracking a joke?
I know Im not making any friends saying this but Bowman has outplayed Willis this year.
Congrats to those boys.. lets just go on a run now.. need that 6th Lombardi!
Recognition for Boonie is great. Great adaptation to a new position and should continue to improve. He’s come a long way from not being a decent draft position due to irresponsible behavior. He’s grown up smart.
I think Miller and Crabs could have been easily selected as well. IMO Bruce Miller has done a excellent job playing a thankless position.
