49ers @ Patriots live blog: Fourth quarter

FOXBORO, Ma. — This is the live blog for the fourth quarter of the 49ers Week 15 game against the New England Patriots. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

8:09 On fourth and goal from the one yard line, Brady dives into the end zone for a touchdown. 31-17 49ers. The Patriots are back in this game.

8:11 Justin Smith ran to the locker room on that drive. Will Tukuafu took his place.

8:14 The 49ers go three-and-out. On third and four Kaepernick throws to James, who doesn’t catch the pass. That looked like defensive pass interference. The linebacker ran right over James. The 49ers punt, and Welker returns it to the Patriots’ 34 yard line. 13:17 left in the fourth quarter.

8:15 Justin Smith has an elbow injury and his return is questionable.

8:19 Brady converts a fourth and two from his 42 yard line. He play fakes and hits Welker for 15 yards.

8:20 Next play, the Patriots run a flea flicker and Brady throws it deep to Welker. Whitner knocks into Welker, but the refs don’t call defensive pass interference. They said the pass was not catchable. The 49ers got lucky there.

8:22 Next play, Brady play fakes and throws into the end zone for Lloyd. Brown knocks him down and this time the refs call pass interference. First and goal at the 49ers’ five yard line.

8:23 Brady throws an easy touchdown pass to Hernandez, who easily beat Whitner to the front pylon. 31-24 49ers with 12:13 left in the fourth quarter.

8:28 On first and ten, Alex Boone is flagged for illegal hands to the face. First and 20 from the 15.

8:28 Next play, Gore gains 11 yards up the middle on a draw. Second and nine.

8:29 Next play, Rob Ninkovich blows by Joe Staley and sack Kaepernick for a loss of 13. Third and 22. The 49ers use their second timeout.

8:31 Kaepernick checks down to Gore, who gets tackled at the SF 21. Fourth and 14, and Lee will punt.

8:32 It was a 64-yard punt. Welker returns it to the Patriots 25 yard line, but the Patriots were flagged for holding. They’ll start this crucial drive from their eight yard line.

8:36 Brady hits Lloyd on a slant for 10 yards on second and 10. Next play, Brady hits Lloyd for a 53-yard completion down the right sideline. Culliver got roasted on that play.

8:38 Brady hits Branch for a 13-yard gain. First and 10 at the 49ers 11 yard line.

8:38 Ricky Jean Francois is flagged for encroachment. First and five from the six.

8:39 Brady steps up and scrambles for the first down. He slides down at the one yard line.

8:39 Next play, Woodhead runs into the end zone untouched for a touchdown. 31-31 with 6:43 left in the game. That drive was seven plays, 92 yards and a little more than three minutes. The Patriots just scored 28 unanswered points in less than a quarter.

8:41 LaMichael James returns the kickoff 62 yards to the Patriots 38.

8:42 First play, Kaepernick hits Crabtree who easily breaks a tackle and runs into the end zone for a 38-yard TD. 38-31 49ers with 6:25 left in the fourth quarter.

8:48 Ray McDonald sacks Brady on second down, and Ricky Jean Francois beats Nate Solder around the edge to sack Brady on third down. The Patriots punt. Ted Ginn Jr. bobbles the punt and falls on it. Bad game for him. First and 10 for the Niners at their 28 yard line with 4:40 left in the fourth quarter.

8:51 Here’s a recurring theme: Roman goes conservative, calls three straight runs and the 49ers go three-and-out. The 49ers will punt with 3:09 left in the fourth quarter.

8:53 The Patriots are flagged for holding on the return. They will start their do-or-die drive from their four yard line.

8:54 On first down, Brady avoids a sack in the end zone and throws it away.

8:55 On third and 2 from their 12, Brady throws incomplete behind Woodhead. They’re going for it on fourth down.

8:55 Brady throws high and incomplete for Woodhead on the left sideline. The 49ers take over on downs with 2:20 left.

8:59 Roman calls three runs. Fourth and eight and the Patriots 10 yard line. Two minute warning. Akers has to hit a 28 yard field goal. He missed earlier from 39 yards out.

9:01 Akers makes it. 41-31 49ers with 1:56 left in the game.

9:07 Brady drives the Patriots down to the SF 23 in 11 plays and 1 minute and 18 seconds. Gostkowski makes the 41-yard field goal with 38 seconds left. 41-34 49ers. Onside kick time.

9:09 Walker recovers. The 49ers win. Back at you shortly.

No linebacker over the top of that play on Brady.

  9. undercenter says:

Ok offense need a drive keep Brady off the field.

  10. domingo says:

If we lose this game the blame lies with Harbaugh. To go totally conservative on both sides of the ball is unforgivable.

  11. pete4mtx says:

I thought we ALL knew he was going to sneak..cmon D
    .no more prevent D

  12. 23jordan/ says:

We need a drive and 3 points!

  15. NinerNation says:

Justin Smith temp out? Injuries piling up….

  16. 23jordan/ says:

  18. IntelligentAj says:

    Dumbass playcalling!!!!

  19. NinerNation says:

Where’s the P.I. on James? The defender had his back turned.

  20. pete4mtx says:

    Worried:/

  21. fesnyc says:

loss of Hunter and KW hurting us

  22. BigP says:

Note to Fangio: The zone isn’t working too well, you might want to go back to playing man coverage.

  23. 23jordan/ says:

    We need a stop defense!!!

  24. Big niner says:

Our defense needs to wake up in the second half. No more prevent.

  25. pete4mtx says:

    Def running low on gas

  26. 23jordan/ says:

    D will stop them here!!

  27. Big Suede says:

What a disaster- They are going to lose this stupid game. Just stupid playcalling.

  28. michael says:

Can we ever just close out games.

  29. DS94everXev says:

Where is Iupati? What was his injury?

  30. Shoup says:

Aldon Smith needs to wake up. He hasn’t done Jack all game.
And Roman well he is back to being Roman.

  31. fesnyc says:

looks like we’re back to man coverage

  32. Big Suede says:

Collinsworth hit it when he said the niners switched from man in the first half to zone in the second. This zone D isnt helpful.

  33. 23jordan/ says:

come on Patrick, he was wide open!

  34. Crab15 says:

    Prevent D prevents W.

  35. Big niner says:

    who was welkers guy?

  36. NinerNation says:

4th quarter….This is where Brady makes his money. How did they not expect the play action?

  37. fesnyc says:

ok, we got the fake punt, they got this one

    D has to step up

  38. Nick says:

    Come on D

  39. bayareafanatic says:

    Someone blew it

  40. Tyrant.com says:

They held Aldon smith on 3rddown

  41. Big niner says:

their Oline is holding like crazy

  42. Stan says:

    Stay on Welkers arse.

  43. Nick says:

    F brady – cry baby

  44. 23jordan/ says:

    Come on Defense!!!

  45. fesnyc says:

must have been a great timeout, judging by Brady’s reaction!

  46. NinerNation says:

Brady is such a baby spiking the ball in anger because we called a timeout.

  47. Shoup says:

Damn were going to get Montanaed.

  48. Big niner says:

where’s the 15 yards unsportman like conduct penalty for throwing the ball like that? Brady gets away with murder!!

  49. DS94everXev says:

Shouldn’t Brady get a cry-baby penalty right there?

  50. Crab15 says:

That’s a 15 yard unsportsman like penalty on Brady for spiking ball out of anger! BS REFS!!

  51. Stan says:

Jeez, this like the total opposite of my prediction…its the Bradys, making up a deficit to make the score close..not the niners. Good.

  52. angusinCanada says:

    uh oh….

  53. BigP says:

Bad PI call, give me a break.

  54. NinerNation says:

Brady has all day in the pocket. Bad P.I. call again.

  55. angusinCanada says:

non-call on brady hissyfit, then a questionalbe PI…..

  56. 23jordan/ says:

    Brady call!

  57. fesnyc says:

    Four quarters.

  58. Grimey9er says:

That PI was a bad call.

  59. Crab15 says:

He tripped over his own feet….lol

  60. pete4mtx says:

    Still worried
    :/

  61. BigP says:

This is a joke, the coaches have absolutely destroyed the lead and the momentum. Good F’ing job!

  62. domingo says:

We had them 31-3 and Harbaugh has us go into sleep walk mode.

  63. Big niner says:

oh boy…… they’re running picks like crazy!!! no calls. now we have to win it…

  64. Shoup says:

serves the niners right for playing all conservative.

    • cdr_riker says:

I agree. They had the pats down and took their foot off the gas. Blame Roman and Harbaugh if the 49ers lose.

  65. DS94everXev says:

So T. Brown is supposed to not cover the guy?

  66. cdr_riker says:

Refs are helping the Pats, but the 49ers are trying to lose.

  67. angusinCanada says:

Kaepernick needs to take control of this game. Now.

  68. Grimey9er says:

we really need some offense here.

  69. NinerNation says:

Chunk yards off of a bush*t P.I. call to put them in scoring position.

  70. 23jordan/ says:

Offense has to make a statement. We need to score something right here.

  71. ninermd says:

What a f****ng joke. Conserative play gets you a loss. Unbelievable

  72. Big niner says:

Out coached in the second half. NO excuses!!!

  73. 23jordan/ says:

time for the running QB to get outside and start running the football instead of forcing throws.

  74. IntelligentAj says:

Like Greg Manusky all those years, the Prevent Defense works to snatch Defeat from the jaws of Victory. We had all the momentum and shut them down with man and you switch to a zone and now you let Tom Brady get hot, F’ing Idiot

  75. Big Suede says:

If the niners lose this- it might be losing the season. This is going to be devastating.

The niners were so aggressive and then they pull up. I don’t get it. Justin Smith is a huge loss.

    • cdr_riker says:

Agreed – if the pats come back and win, the 49ers season is over. They will lose to Seattle AND Arizona and miss the playoffs, and ALL the blame will be on Harbaugh, Roman and Fangio.

  76. 23jordan/ says:

Ok here we go. Where did the screen go?????

  77. shawnrhod says:

Quick TD to Crabtree + Two 3 and outs = no time off the clock. Our D needs a breather.

    Lets go Niners!!!

  78. pete4mtx says:

    Another 3 n out n we lose

  79. msclemons67 says:

Ok Harbaugh and Roman. Play to win here. Don’t play not to lose.

  80. michael says:

And now come the penalties on offence

  81. pete4mtx says:

    Facemask!!!”!”"!!

  82. NinerNation says:

Another penalty on us? Boone had his jersey not facemask?
4th quarter 31-24……we got a ballgame here people.

  83. domingo says:

    Now we are getting homed

  84. 23jordan/ says:

    SCREEN!!!!

  85. Big niner says:

    great run by gore

  86. 23jordan/ says:

    Gore is an animal!!

  87. RolloTomasi says:

We need a time consuming scoring drive.

  88. domingo says:

Kap was hit in the head

  89. philly9er says:

    Throw it away

  90. undercenter says:

    This is not good

  91. BigP says:

    Staley the matador.

  92. msclemons67 says:

Jesus Kaep. Don’t play like Smith – get rid of the ball.

  93. michael says:

    And now go the timeouts

  94. NinerNation says:

Staley got fooled on that sack and Kap needs to throw it away.

  95. Shoup says:

The niners quit in the 3rd.

  96. Big niner says:

    great…..wake the F up!!!!!

  97. 23jordan/ says:

Should not have burned that time out. Take the penalty there. It’s already 3rd and 22.

  98. shawnrhod says:

    Where is VD??

  99. NinerNation says:

3rd and 22 here we go.

  100. IntelligentAj says:

I’m so f’ing mad right now, how can you change your playcalling so dramatically from half to the next? Why change from what’s working? No lead is safe against the league’s TOP SCORING OFFENSE!!

  101. DS94everXev says:

    FG is awesome!

At least CK didn’t run to the end zone.

    • Txtree49er says:

      Pretty low DS

    • Sycophantick Romantick says:

Seriously? You’ve been relatively articulate and accurate tonight and now you’re going there?

    • BigP says:

      BS,
Go back to your shanty and stare at your poster of Alex Smith! We all know you would be calling out Staley if it was Smith back there.

    • DS94everXev says:

Look who shows up and act like they are something special.

CK was outside the pocket. Could have thrown it anywhere as long as it passed the line of scrimmage.

But go ahead and proceed with your BS. It’s what you accuse me of but what you guys do the best.

  102. Big niner says:

    where are the TE”s?

  103. whatever says:

    JH loses this game

  104. fesnyc says:

    Andy Lee, stud

  105. 23jordan/ says:

    great punt Andy LEE!!!

  106. Big niner says:

    Come on D!!!!

  107. msclemons67 says:

Wow, the 49ers let Kaep throw on 3rd and 22. It didn’t work, but that’s a lot more trust than we’ve seen for the QB in the past.

  108. domingo says:

    Unbelievable game.

  109. JohnJPDX says:

    c mon D

  110. Randy says:

What??A penalty against the New England Brady’s???

  111. shawnrhod says:

I guess we need to ask the D AGAIN to win this game…

Are we being out coached or thinking too much this half???

    What gives… com’on 9ers

  112. 23jordan/ says:

Lets see what our defense has left! I say we get a big stop here!

  113. Tyrant.com says:

Akers kicks that fg in the first half this game is over

  114. BigP says:

I can’t believe how horrendous the coaching has been here in the second half. It’s almost like they are trying to lose the game. It’s bullsh$% like this that makes me lose my mind. How do you turn a dominant, statement making performance into a hot mess? You get in the way of your players. Unbelievable……

  115. shawnrhod says:

    lets get a turnover…

  116. domingo says:

This is like the games we used to see before the 1990 rule changes that took about 25 snaps out of each game. Quite stopping the clock when the ball went out of bounds and 40 seconds between plays rather than 30.

  117. DaNiners says:

If we lose this game, it falls 110% on the coaching staff. YOU DO NOT GO INTO PREVENT HALFWAY THROUGH THE 3RD Q. EVER! MOSTLY AGAINST BRADY!

  118. cdr_riker says:

I think I’m going to puke.

  119. philly9er says:

    OMG!!!

  120. michael says:

    Unbelievable

  121. Big niner says:

    come on D

  122. fesnyc says:

Ok Roman, you’re going to need to score at least once more on offense – get your plays lined up now

  123. 23jordan/ says:

Culliver is having a horrible game!

  124. angusinCanada says:

    Culliver quit on that play??

  125. DS94everXev says:

    STUPID USE OF A TIMEOUT!

3rd and 22, won’t convert anyway. Now we are down to 1 timeout the rest of the game!

    Andy Lee still the best!

  126. Mr. Automatic says:

Culliver is getting abused and we’re not getting any pressure. What happened to the team that was wearing our uinforms in the first half?

  127. pkny says:

For the first time I am starting to lose faith in JH

  128. 23jordan/ says:

    Un Real!

  129. Stan says:

    Aldon tired?

  130. DaNiners says:

    WORST COLLAPSE EVER!!!

  131. Stan says:

    Willis tired?

  132. MontanaMan16 says:

I can’t believe this is happening!

  133. Big niner says:

we’re giving this game away….. ffffffffffff

  134. Stan says:

    Whered they go?

  135. fesnyc says:

    injury bug…i dont like it

  136. 55Niner says:

Here we go….it looks like the Pats were just toying with the 9er’s in the first half…

  137. DaNiners says:

    DISGUSTING! HARBAUGH SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED!

  138. domingo says:

    This is on Harbaugh

  139. undercenter says:

    Geez

  140. NinerNation says:

Team is imploding. This is on the coaches.

Harbs getting conservative and the refs giving the Pats calls to let them back in the game.

  141. domingo says:

    31-3 and he goes conservative

  142. Stan says:

    31-3…31-31. Yikes. I see OT…

  143. philly9er says:

    I don’t believe this

  144. Fourth & Alex says:

This is crazy. I almost want to laugh but I know the Patriots did the same thing to other teams when down big. Tom Brady is crazy good and Bellichek is too good at exploiting weaknesses.

  145. Stan says:

    The prevent Defense…you finish it.

    • Fourth & Alex says:

They got out of the prevent and that killed them on the big gain last drive. Nothing is working.

  146. Big niner says:

    our coaches are getting smacked!!!

  147. 23jordan/ says:

No problem. Kap, do your thing. ake a name for yourself!

  148. fesnyc says:

offense has scored 31 on the road in foul weather – that should have been enough

but it hasnt been, so we need you to step up for more.

  149. Randy says:

now Chris Collinsworth can start his man crush on Brady…

  150. RandomFan53 says:

Maybe the Pats have so much luck with the halftime readjustments because they put something in the opposing team’s water/Gatorade supply.

  151. Shoup says:

Wow, The niners just got Posterized.

  152. shawnrhod says:

The offense and the coaches. This is on them. Mainly the coaches.

    WTF~!

  153. Edgar Acuna says:

Blowing a 4 TD lead? Inexcusable!

  154. NinerNation says:

Woodhead has 2 rushing TDs against us. Jeez…..

  155. whatever says:

the Harbaugh bros are not having a good day today.

  156. Stan says:

    no 1 pick!

  157. pkny says:

Ok this is the big test for CK.

  158. Mr. Automatic says:

    Nice job LMJ! LET’S GO

  159. Big niner says:

    lets get a TD here

  160. undercenter says:

    LaMic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  161. fesnyc says:

LaMichael, i take back what i said about your lack of push!

  162. domingo says:

I am surprised there is no flag

  163. 23jordan/ says:

What did I tell you LMJ was going to do????

  164. MontanaMan16 says:

    It ain’t over yet!

  165. Stan says:

    lol..greatgame!

  166. IntelligentAj says:

    Let’s go Michael!!!!

  167. fesnyc says:

    YYYYYEEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH!

  168. domingo says:

    Whoa!

  169. undercenter says:

    Wow

  170. NinerNation says:

    Kap to Crabs TD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  171. Big niner says:

    TD Crabs!!! lets go D

  172. BigP says:

I never thought that Harbaugh was this capable of completely screwing up a game that was in hand. This second half has been absolutely atrocious, and the coaches deserve 100% of the blame.

CK with TD #4! Let them play!!!!!!!!!!

  173. 23jordan/ says:

    Crabtree!!!!!!!!!!!!

  174. Grimey9er says:

    WOW!

  175. MontanaMan16 says:

    That was too quick!

  176. Mr. Automatic says:

    We are not done yet!!!

  177. domingo says:

    What a game!

  178. shawnrhod says:

Saw that all the way. Talib was not on Crabs….

R Moss is not a threat. Need Manningham back.

  179. whatever says:

now it’s up to the D

  180. fesnyc says:

    your turn, Tom

  181. Stan says:

    I love this game!

  182. michael says:

I have an ulcer right now

  183. Jack Hammer says:

    HOLY KAEP!!!!

  184. Big niner says:

that missed FG is huge now

  185. msclemons67 says:

    Kaaepernick to the rescue

  186. LukeAF24 says:

You didn’t want to score that fast though. The D needs a breather.

  187. Stan says:

    ITS OLD SCHOOL RAIDERS!…like.

  188. Crab15 says:

    Just throw it to Crabtree!

  189. foamingatdamouth says:

That’s why he’s the starter. Big under pressure. Grant your going back to New Orleans!

  190. NinerNation says:

Only bad thing is we scored on 2 plays, not enough time taken off the clock. But f*ck it we NEED those points!

  191. 23jordan/ says:

O line did a great job picking up the blitz!!

  192. SactoGreg says:

This game is making me chain smoke…..D is still exhausted, need a turnover……

  193. 23jordan/ says:

    Freaking Akers!

  194. Caps_Lock says:

Now get the f****n defense to play defense instead of being f****n matadors.

  195. Stan says:

    “Crazy Train” game is right.

  196. 23jordan/ says:

    1 stop Defense!!!

  197. Mr. Automatic says:

We need to get some pressure – c’mon D

  198. Caps_Lock says:

    GODDAMNIT!!!!!

  199. 23jordan/ says:

    We need a sack!!!

  200. Big niner says:

    zone blitz….drop a lineman

  201. NinerNation says:

Time to pin your ears back Aldon… This is your time!

  202. bayareafanatic says:

    Rogers

  203. 23jordan/ says:

    Come on Cully!!!

  204. fesnyc says:

    nice!

  205. Big niner says:

    ray mac!!!

  206. NinerNation says:

Ray Mac with the much needed sack!

  207. Grimey9er says:

    Ray Mac is the man!

  208. Mr. Automatic says:

    McDonald – I’m lovin’ it

  209. 23jordan/ says:

  222. bayareafanatic says:

  226. 23jordan/ says:

Cut Ginn along with Akers!!! Ted, I need your playbook!!!!

  227. Mr. Automatic says:

I swear to God – if Ginn loses that ball…ARGH

  228. Big niner says:

    nice slow methodical drive here

  229. Stan says:

    He’s up,He’s down,He’s up..lol..

  230. LukeAF24 says:

    Come on, 1 first down….

  231. shawnrhod says:

  234. msclemons67 says:

  235. domingo says:

Give the game back to them Jim

  236. Big niner says:

    where’s the pistol?

  237. BigP says:

It is time to win this thing! Let’s go offense!

  238. NinerNation says:

    Who wants it more o-line?

  239. Big Suede says:

Play to win- don’t just burn clock!

  240. NinerNation says:

A big scramble by Kap would kill these guys right now.

  241. whatever says:

Why the rookie ?? C’mon GR

  242. domingo says:

Harbaugh does not like to win

  243. angusinCanada says:

WTF was that??? And where’s Gore?

  244. Big niner says:

    too conservative again…smh

  245. IntelligentAj says:

Why not run a slant or a screen?!! WTF are they doing with some of these play calls!!!

  246. shawnrhod says:

    WHY NOT THROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you want to win Harbs??

  247. DaNiners says:

Terrible, terrible, terrible play calling in 4th Q

  248. Big Suede says:

THREE RUNS IN A ROW! UNBELIEVABLE. And no QB draw.

  249. Shoup says:

Wow, Nice Play calling Roman, once again… you coached just good enough to lose.

  250. 23jordan/ says:

Man Kap, its time for you to keep one on 3rd down!!

  251. BigP says:

Bill Belichick would have thrown for a first down there. I can’t believe this.

  252. 23jordan/ says:

    Hit it hard Andy!!

  253. Fourth & Alex says:

Yeah I know LMJ looks good but I’m not sure how I feel about handing it to a rookie in such a critical spot.

  254. 23jordan/ says:

    PRO BOWL PUNTER!!!

  255. msclemons67 says:

    Playing not to lose.

Sometimes I want to punch Harbaugh in the throat.

  256. Big niner says:

    one more stop D

  257. foamingatdamouth says:

3 runs Roman? Does Jimmy Raye know something about you and a dead hooker in the Vegas desert?

  258. angusinCanada says:

    This is it, this drive.

  259. Caps_Lock says:

Now the defense has to get a safety to make up for the four drives by Brady.

  260. Mr. Automatic says:

    Yet ANOTHER 3 and out! :X let’s go D!!!

  261. Grimey9er says:

A lot of penalties on the Pats special teams tonight.

  262. shawnrhod says:

    DDDDDDDDD

  263. 23jordan/ says:

DEFENSE!!! Lets GO!! We are getting pressure now!

  264. BigP says:

Put some heat on Brady’s ass dammit!

  265. Tyrant.com says:

    Harbaughtary

  271. Big niner says:

  272. angusinCanada says:

  273. undercenter says:

    Defense yes

  274. 23jordan/ says:

    Thats My DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!

  275. domingo says:

    What a Fricken Game

  276. NinerNation says:

Turnover on downs yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Listen to Collinsworth he’s sad! lol

  277. Grimey9er says:

Nice D! This might be a done deal.

  278. michael says:

    No fg please

  279. fesnyc says:

Offense delivers, but defense got a bit soft. Kaep with a big time win (touch wood)

  280. Big niner says:

    way to stay in LMJ

  281. whatever says:

    Where is Gore ?

  282. domingo says:

Hopefully Akers can make a kick

  283. NinerNation says:

Message to Kap and any ball carrier……”Stay in bounds”.

  284. Big Suede says:

    PLEASE HAVE KAEP RUN IT!

  285. Big niner says:

    bootleg here please

  286. 55Niner says:

One thing’s clear to me…after watching this game, it looks as though all of the angst pointed toward Alex Smith for the lack of offensive production this season was misdirected….it sholuld have been pointed at the coaching staff all along…though I didn’t believe that the 9er’s would win, I can’t believe the ultra-conservative play calling in the second half…….

    • fesnyc says:

can’t say you’re fully wrong, but we’re about to score 41 points – should be at least 44 if Akers makes the earlier FG.

NE is a great team – Brady is a total stud. If anything, i’d say our D just got a bit soft with those zones in the 2nd half. plus NE stopped turning the ball over.

    • Grimey9er says:

this coaching staff needs to develop that killer instinct.

      • Grimey9er says:

prevent defense almost prevented us from winning.

      • 55Niner says:

Exactly!! This team isn’t a 9er’s team from the ’80s or an earlier NE Patriots…….if JH and Co. don’t go out with the ‘slit their throats’ mentality against Seattle…its going to be a long night…I hate conservative football…it used to piss me off to no end when BW and GS did it, and it still does to this day. You all know as well as I do that if, given the chance, Belechick, Carroll, McCarthy and some of the other coaches in the league would bury the 9er’s if given the chance….win big today…worry about the next time you play this team when the time comes.

    • Big Suede says:

Roman is a disaster- the play calling is just off. Kaep is best when he is running that bootleg and i dont think we saw it once in the second half.

crazy. I really hope he finds some other employment.

    • foamingatdamouth says:

      Still on that guy?

  287. Mr. Automatic says:

We got this! Don’t friggin’ choke, Akers!

  288. msclemons67 says:

Is Gore hurt? Why is the skinny kid in the game?

    • NinerNation says:

Pats defense is really tired right now. Chasing the speedy James only makes it harder for them at this point in the game. We should have called a rollout out for kap there though…

  289. 23jordan/ says:

    Bootleg right here for Kap!

  290. IntelligentAj says:

Why not go for a Touchdown? I understand making them use their TO’s but if we get a TD the game is over

  291. michael says:

Are we really going to put this in Akers leg.

  292. shawnrhod says:

throw the ball… 2 min warning will come at kick off or field goal

  293. NinerNation says:

    Go for the kill

  294. domingo says:

    All on Akers

  295. 23jordan/ says:

    Oh GOD, freaking AKERS!

  296. BigP says:

Stay in bounds, smart play. Hopefully Akers can push it in from 15 yards out, although I would be lying if I said I was confident.

  297. Shoup says:

great so now were taking a on coin flip on an Akers field goal.

  298. domingo says:

This has been an old fashioned football game!

  299. MontanaMan16 says:

Has there ever been a more nerve racking field goal attempt?

  300. Jason says:

Thats cool, just play for the field goal..weird, think I’ve seen this a couple times before.

    • IntelligentAj says:

Exactly, at least try one play in the End zone instead of running 3 consecutive times like the patriots can’t score or something

  301. NinerNation says:

    You better make that Akers.

  302. domingo says:

    What a game! We win!

  303. MontanaMan16 says:

    Nice!

  304. Big niner says:

    I hope JS is ok….

  305. SactoGreg says:

    Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

  306. Fourth & Alex says:

So tell me what you think. Instead of relying on Akers..,

It’s 3rd down and 8 secs left before the 2 minute warning. Why not try a play action pass, and let CK only throw it if its wide open?

Even if they throw an incompletion and it stops the clock, does it really matter? You have a kick-off coming after the FG will uh it down to the 2 minute warning anyway. And.. a kick-off stops the clock anyway.

I just think that would have been a clever spot to completely fool them.

  307. 23jordan/ says:

I STILL want his azz cut!!!

  308. JohnJPDX says:

    i’m hyperventilating

  309. jgwindsor/jaws says:

nice job niners…kap looking great at times…definitely a shootout game…in wet and slippery conditions

new england most stupid on 4th at own 15

  310. Big niner says:

jh , lol IT’s your fault they’re even in this game. It shouldn’t have been this close.

  311. Houston 9er says:

If Akers makes all the FGs he should make, what is the 9ers record?

  312. shawnrhod says:

After Moss got the TD he was not a factor. TEs not a factor.

Really need to get this offense going for the playoffs.

  313. Mr. Automatic says:

I haven’t said this in too long – way do seal up the victory, Akers. Phwew. That’s the ball game boys and girls.

  314. NinerNation says:

Kap has 4 TDs on the night. The kid loves the big stage and now the whole world sees why Harbs made him the starter.

  315. Tyrant.com says:

Akers and ginn still should be cut

  316. Crab15 says:

Offensive worries solved! Defense gets a hall pass…They have earned it.

  317. NinerNation says:

Aldon Smith ran off the field holding his arm. Is he hurt?

  318. Big niner says:

    I want a pick 6 here, lool

  319. Big niner says:

    AS needs a sack

  320. Big niner says:

    I hate the prevent defense

  321. NinerNation says:

Pats trying to kick a field goal here then make a onside kick.

  322. 23jordan/ says:

Can you believe this damn game is still not over!!???!!!???

  323. domingo says:

    Like the Arizona Nevada game

  324. Shoup says:

Wow, I cant believe I am so nervous on this one.

  325. domingo says:

    Delanie Walker!

  326. NinerNation says:

    We got it…..Ballgame!

  327. angusinCanada says:

    terrible kick. Lol.

  328. 23jordan/ says:

    Walker caught another ball?!?!?!?

  329. michael says:

Wow a win is a win.

  330. undercenter says:

    What a game

  331. domingo says:

    What a game Niner Fans

  332. Grimey9er says:

Here comes victory formation playoff berth is official.

  333. JohnJPDX says:

    Huge win

  334. BigP says:

The team, when not shackled by the coaching staff, played exceptionally well tonight. CK was outstanding and out dueled Tom Brady on the road, in prime time. 4 TD’s? Smith has never thrown for 4 TD’s in a game. Looks like Harbaugh made the right choice, now he just needs to let him play. This team is dominant when it is attacking, on offense and defense. They are a complete failure when playing it safe. I hope the coaching staff learned something from this and allow this team to play to their full potential going forward. Anything less than that is unfair to this group of players.

  335. tkamB says:

    At least we win.

  336. msclemons67 says:

    Game over.

  337. 23jordan/ says:

What’s that December record again??? Put an L on that!!!

  338. fesnyc says:

Kaep totally delivered. Hopefully the haters find something better to do with their time

    • AES* says:

      Nice call fesnyc.

4 passing TD’s, not bad for a “run first” QB (lol)!
We did enough to win a big game against the high flying Patriots.
Of course some here will NOW say that the Patriots were not ready to play tonight ala the Bears.

Defense came out laxed in the 2nd half and allowed NE (Brady) too much time to make plays. But on the other hand, I thought that they (defense) gave the offense very good field position in the first half on turnovers which we did not capitolize on. We could have put a 30 spot on NE in the 1st half if we don’t leave points on the field, but a win is a win!

Congratulations go out to Crabtree, LMJ, CK7, and my personal favorite, Grant Cohn for predicting a 49ers loss (lol).

      • fesnyc says:

exactly. Bears were on a roll till they met Kaep/Niners, then 2 days later the Smithers wanted to throw that game out. Kaep is making throws that Alex wouldnt even try, and that’s why he’s starting.

    • Calistoga Red says:

CK had a great game, but while the elements were certainly a factor, he’s got to get a handle on that ball security. The ball was on the ground out of his hands way too much tonight. He and Goodwin really need to spend some time together this week to get that right.

  339. Caps_Lock says:

My hands are shaking uncontrollably. I HATE IT when the Niners TRY to lose.

  340. msclemons67 says:

41 points by the offense. Hopefully the few remaining Alex Smith fans will realize it’s over.

  341. BigP says:

That was a looooooooonnnng game! Damn.

  342. NinerNation says:

That big return by James was huge, it put us in the postion to put the game away. Balke & Harbs draft pick looking good.

  343. Tyrant.com says:

No sleep for me tonight, what a game

  344. Jack Hammer says:

    That was a GREAT GAME!

  345. hov says:

i think i had a heartattack crazy game

  346. RandomFan53 says:

    Someone check my pulse, please.

  347. Sycophantick Romantick says:

To all the real fans, nice chatting with you. It’s obvious this team finally has all the tools it needs, including a steely-eyed, winner of a QB to Kaep it all off!!!

To all the Alex Fluffers, are you finally convinced? This is like winning the Superbowl, except harder, because the Niners did it in Boston.

  348. Dh3 says:

Now… will everyone please shut up about Colin Kaepernick being the 49ers starting QB

    • fesnyc says:

4 Tds, 41 points – on the road, in bad weather, against NE late in the season. Damn!

    • domingo says:

Ck is going to be a star in this league. If he is not already. Lot’s of mistakes but the guy is great.

    • msclemons67 says:

      “My Precious! My Precious!”

I believe this game just sealed the fate of Alex on this team. 41 points by the offense in a playoff atmosphere. We just saw what a real QB can do in this offense.

The defense though… that’s another story.

      • BigP says:

They just need to play aggressively, all of the time. The coaching staff almost gave this game away. The D was good until Fangio ran zone coverage in the second half.

      • bayareafanatic says:

It wasn’t so much on the defense as it was on the change of strategy. Fangio got too cute and paid for it.

  349. Mr. Automatic says:

Great win! Excuse me… I think I need to lay down now. Haha

  350. Grimey9er says:

Need to work on the center-qb exchange this week. Other than that great game! Great win!

    • Tyrant.com says:

Yes, amazing we still win with all the miscues

    • 23jordan/ says:

It was a wet ball, but we still gotta find a way to control that.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Dilfer identified it as a flaw in CKs handwork. He seemed to think its something Kap will need to work on in the off season; probably not a week to week fix.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Wet ball cold weather. He hasn’t had the issue before. Not like tonight anyway. He made an adjustment at half you could tell. God that was terrible.

      • I may have missed the toilet, but Kaep saved the day!!! says:

Hmm I dont think its all Kap, if I remember correctly Goodwin and Smith had some problems adjusting to each other when he first came here. Its probably just the QB center exchange thats still being worked out, it will just take a little time.

  351. Crab15 says:

Belichick is a sore loser! Total *rick!

  352. Tyrant.com says:

I hop our coaching staff learned from that game. Almost a disaster switching to zone coverage in 2nd half

  353. 23jordan/ says:

    Anybody heard from Hofer??? Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

    Anybody heard from prime???

    Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahaha

    BS ?????????????

    Claude????????

    Good night now!

    • msclemons67 says:

Hey now – Hofer is a good 49ers fan. Don’t lump him in with oneniner and DS.

      • NinerNation says:

NO he’s not. Hof is a inconsistent hypocrite, he was totally undercutting Kap and Harbs for weeks during & after games questioning Harbs expertise with his passive aggressive posts.

      • 23jordan/ says:

No, he’s a good Alex Smith fan. I know it. He knows it.

      • msclemons67 says:

I disagree. Hofer is a good guy.

C’mon guys. Don’t lump 49ers fans in with the strange Alex Smith Utah cultists.

      • fesnyc says:

imho, Hofer lost credibility after Kaep came in and played well – his comments about Kaep’s good play were at best begrudging, and he let his true colors show as soon as we started to win by ONLY a few points.

    • Randy says:

      Yawn…

    • domingo says:

They are Smither’s. Not 49er fans!

    • Allan says:

I really need to stop reading this clown’s comments.

He so classless that he makes it really hard to root for Kaep
(although DS also makes it difficult to root for AS).

    • BigP says:

I don’t ever recall Hofer missing a game when Smith was the QB. He seems to be quite busy on the weekends lately. Hmmmmmm. BS is the ultimate loser that got excited only when Staley missed a block and CK got sacked. Prime Time, well……… I think this might be the game that helps him change his tune.

  354. Allan says:

And Grant was wrong once again.

He must be the worst prognosticator of all time.

Grant, please pick against us in the playoffs. PLEASE!!!!

  355. bayareafanatic says:

Prime just couldn’t stand the heat. And BS could only come up with smart ass comments. Hater buh byeeee. Nananana, nananana, hey heh hey, GOODBYE.

  356. Atl9er says:

Happy with the end result. Our collapse began with that very conservative zone play in the third quarter. Anyone could have guessed that Brady would eventually get into his grove. Way to close out the game nonetheless. I always believed.

  357. Tyrant.com says:

We need to resign Crabtree. He’s becoming big time clutch receiver

  358. Crab15 says:

    Prime, well?
Kap was terrific! On road against hottest team in NFL, against a Hall of
Fame QB on road on national TV in prime time!

    • 23jordan/ says:

      Crabs,

What did I tell you that Crabtree would do when he had a QB that would give him a chance to make plays?!!! he’s a pro bowler bro!

      • bayareafanatic says:

Yep. Crabtree is a stud. Always was. Funny he doesn’t bust out until they give him a real QB who sits in the pocket.
Last year Crabtree was just another alexcuse…

      • Crab15 says:

23/Bay – the people that used to butcher Crabtree still don’t give him credit.
He has proved himself and those injuries were obviously legit.

  359. larry says:

    Only 2 losers tonight…you & the Patriots !!!!

  360. Coffee's for closers says:

Is it an omen that we beat the Pats exactly 49 days before the Super Bowl?!?

    • NinerNation says:

lol. Wow kind of creepy….I like it.

    • foamingatdamouth says:

Let’s hope it is. The Niners showed Championship mettle. They almost choked the game away with conservative and lax playcalling, but when they needed to show heart and respond, they did. They showed the requisite mental toughness to win an SB. Seattle is the next moutain to climb, but after wins against perennial contenders like NE & NO on the road, the upstart Seahawks seem less daunting.

  361. Shoup says:

I thought we were going to lose for sure it looked like the players relaxed and the the coaches started going into their milk the clock cruise control mode. Its hard to get momentum back after doing that. Im thrilled to eat crow about my projection and more importantly not see us on the cover of sports illustrated with title Superchoke.

  362. Razoreater says:

Great victory. Vic, I hope you learned a valuable lesson. No more zone that early against Tom Brady.

  363. bayareafanatic says:

Is Rib gonna still sport his AS avatar?

  364. 49er42 says:

    Any word on Justin Smith?
We scored alot more than I thought we would.
Godson played great give him a new contract.
Kap. Looks very good. He left some points out there but he looked really good generally speaking.

    • Ribico says:

Big Niners win and you guys are ragging on Smith? Haters a classy bunch as always.

What a game! A whole season of big plays, momentum shifts, emotion.

      • bayareafanatic says:

How many niner fans there Rib? How did the Pats fans treat the niner fans during the game? How about after the game? How silent did it get when La Michael returned that kick?

      • NinerNation says:

You’re a lucky man Rib, being able to witness that awesome game up close. What was the 49er fan ratio like out there? Did we represent well in numbers?

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

Rib. Don’t be a tool. Just admit Kaep’s IT and boast that you were lucky to go while many of us watched in our Home Theaters!

      • ribico says:

bay, there were a LOT of Niner fans at this game, especially in my area, behind the Niners bench. Like that Jets game that drew every Niners fan in the tri-state area, this one must have brought every one in the entire New England region.

Here are some of impressions, in no particular order.

Pats fans have to be among the whiniest in the league. That Ginn play, the HD replay, though close, showed the ball *obviously* missed him. Pats fans went ape$hit over the non-call. Hey whiners, have your team do something about the butt kicking they are getting instead of hoping for a call that’s not going your way (they did in the 2nd half, but that’s another story). Wasn’t that fun, waiting around for 15 minutes, in the freezing rain, Hokulis and company to come to their decision? I’m still not sure what happened – didn’t he originally say they were going to replay 4th down – the punt? And eventually Niners get the ball way back in their own end. Whatever, just get going with the game.

Gillette stadium is a soul-less pile (I hope Santa Clara doesn’t turn out this way) Consessions sucked – the same thing over and over again. And get this – no cocktails or hard liquor for sale. Man, what I wouldn’t have given for several snorts last night. Could be New England blue laws in effect? Not much in a regional specialties either – hey Kraft don’t you know sporting events, in new stadiums, are supposed to have *premium* fare available? Even the scoreboards sucked – no in-game team or player stats, just score, down and distance. Bleh.

Pats fans started leaving in droves at 31-3. Considering it took us, after the game, over 2 full hours just to get out of the parking lot onto the access road (WTF?), I can see why they’d bail early. No incidents between colors, Pats fans knew their team had just received an ass-kicking – what are they going to say? Some guy behind me was drunkenly bellowing about SF homos in the beginning. “In our house!!! Massachusetts, not Point Reyes!!! (I think his knowledge of SF geography a little lacking). Later he was yelling for the Pats to show a little pride (hehe), he didn’t return after halftime, passed out maybe. Chatting with Pats fans on the long walk to the lot, we all agreed this was a Superbowl preview.

But wow, what a game. I agree with Grant, this is one of the best ever. Yup, that LMJ return quieted them down, the TD to Crabs the next play took all the air out of the remaining Pats fans. Though annoying giving up that 4 score lead, I had no doubt we were going to pull this out. In person, you could tell the Niners were the harder hitting team all night, and the better team. Pats never stopped us in the first half, only our own mistakes prevented the score from being even more gaudy.

        @ ribico:

Thanks for the report. Glad to hear that the Patriots fans were not total d-bags.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Awesome. Way to represent!!!!

      • ribico says:

claude, as we know, every team draws it’s share of d-bag fans.

Kap…41 points on road vs hottest team in NFL, on road, hostile environment, poor weather and against legend Tom Brady.
    WOW!

  366. Neal says:

    I need a vacation.

  367. domingo says:

Gotta give some credit to the offensive line. They pass blocked well tonight. Finally!

  368. I may have missed the toilet, but Kaep saved the day!!! says:

One note for this game. Lamichel James what a star tonight, Ted Ginn is not coming back next year, it also looks like he is another great back to augment our awesome running back core. Kaep played amazingly, Crabtree was unstoppable, what a game for our guys absolutely stunning performance.

  369. Brotha Tuna says:

Seems to me that this team’s experience in so many close, low scoring games helped them keep their heads in this game as Brady kept ratcheting up the pressure with his comeback. True grit, no quit.

    • NinerNation says:

Totally agree. So proud of how the entire team handled the ups and downs of this game on the big stage.

  370. I may have missed the toilet, but Kaep saved the day!!! says:

Also Alex Smith would not have won this game, this is the first game I can honestly look at and say his safe conservative ball game would not have one against Kaeps explosive high risk approach. Personally though I think seattle is going to be a tougher game for the niners.

    • bayareafanatic says:

Doesn’t matter. We win 1 out of the next two and we win the division….

    • I may have missed the toilet, but Kaep saved the day!!! says:

Its going to be tough Atlanta is on fire, I don’t really see them losing any games for the rest of their schedule.

      • 23jordan/ says:

What are you talking about. 2 see gets a bye. We can’t catch Atlanta. We’ll have to go there and beat them come playoff time. NFC championship game Niners vs Falcons.

      • foamingatdamouth says:

Atlanta is going to clinch the #1 seed giving them homefield up until the NFC Championship game, but if the Niners get the #2 seed, then they’ll get a bye & 1 game at home.

  371. Tyrant.com says:

We should be able to play a little looser next week , now that we will lead the division no matter what. I say open up the play book and see what kap can do. The sky is the limit with this guys skills

  372. Dangle says:

Wow that was such an intense 2nd half. I had to step away from the blog but thank god they pulled it out. Amazing play ck to crabs for the go ahead score after Brady tied it up. Wow

  373. LSX says:

Wow, what a game. That 2nd half was a roller coaster, but we came out on top! It feels great to beat the Pats especially on the road. Excellent performance from Kaep, another solid game from Crabs, and awesome to see LMJ out there doing what he does.

I’m a bit worried about Justin Smith’s injury and I think Ginn needs to go ASAP, but I’m not going to complain after this win. One more for the good guys!

  374. SourdoughSam says:

Its a new era in the NFL a changing of the gaurd so to speak. Go 49ers!

  375. Crab15 says:

Shame on those who once butchered Crabtree and called him a diva. He has proven his past injuries were legit.

    • LSX says:

He’s been a stud since last year. The holdout rubbed a lot of folks the wrong way and the injuries were frustrating, but that’s all in the past. He has played extremely well for a while now, especially this season.

    • Grimey9er says:

Exactly. I was stoked when they drafted him and he’s finally coming into his own. It’s great that he’s fully healthy and able show off his skills.

“It’s just football. We’re just out here tryin to make plays” – Michael Crabtree

    • Tyrant.com says:

Your right. He makes spectacular catches of kaps lasers. We gotta resign him. Kap to crabs will be lethal

    • 23jordan/ says:

      Crabs,

I hate to say it again but I told you so. Crabtree has always been the truth. He needed a shot! He needed a QB that would trust him to make plays! Now he’s Ballin. We won’t lose again this year Crabs!

  376. 55Niner says:

Earlier in the week I posted that I didn’t believe that the 49er’s could beat the Patriots, after seeing what the Pats did to Houston….I posted that I wouud gladly take the chiding and ribbing that comes my way….but, I have a question….anybody here know a good chef?? One that specializes in preparing CROW……

  377. ninermd says:

    Wheeeew!
1 I would like to say to the ck haters and doubters. (Aka) Smithers. Ck is the truth. You all said it would take this game for him to prove his worth, all along hoping to God he would fail….. Beat it!

2 I am still pissed that Harbaugh went conservative in the second half

    3 Akers sucks out loud

4 I’d like to think Grant for picking the Pats to win.

5 VD is my favorite 49er but he sucks right now! Boooo on that dropped pass. The game could have easily been a 50 point scoring clinic,BUT ill take the W

  378. Tyrant.com says:

Smithers seem a little quiet tonight, wonder why?

    • thegrudge says:

What is there to say, Kap played great! Smith is done, its Kap’s team now. Case closed. We’ve moved on(I thought?) Look I supported Smith, coach made the change, Kap has proven it was the right decision. Lets stop being a house divided and enjoy this EPIC win. We’ve still got another one coming with the Seachickens!!

      • Ed from AZ says:

Hard not to agree. Kap has grabbed the reins of the starting job and is not going to let go.

Great win for the 49ers! And way to break another streak and remove some more doubt about this defense vs. “Elite QBs”

  379. Scooter_McG says:

This was a bizarre game. For long stretches the 49ers offense and defense dominated this game. Lots of big plays on both sides of the ball, especially the D which gave the offense lots of short fields, and I thought Kaep made some great reads and throws.

At other times the 49ers tried very hard to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I put most of the issues down on the coaching staff. The coaching staff seriously need to look at what they are doing when we have a lead – this isn’t the first time we’ve let a team back in a game we should have had wrapped up.

Aside from coaching issues, Ted Ginn had a shocker, making dumb mistakes in the return game. And despite making some great plays and overall playing well, Kaep also had too many bad plays. The centre – QB exchange could have led to a lot of turnovers – we got lucky there, especially the TD by Gore. He also missed a couple of wide open throws that should have been TDs, and the INT was poor reading of coverage. If the D hadn’t dominated the first half and opening to the 3rd quarter, those missed opportunities would have bitten the 49ers on their asses.

Plenty to like from this game, but also plenty of areas to work on.

  380. 23jordan/ says:

We will not lose another game this season! Book it!

    • ninermd says:

To late Jordo. I already said that 2 weeks ago. ;-) but the 2-1 winning method has to stop. Wheeeew!

  381. Sycophantick Romantick says:

Wow! So THIS is what it’s like to have a QB, our WRs actually get to touch the ball! Nice. Very happy for all the guys.

  382. Sputnik says:

Alex smith who!!! I don’t want to here his name agin , Collin has beat Chicago and saints on the road and the cheating patriots on the road and he’s going to beat the craphaks on the road no way niners win any of those games with the dump truck smith

  383. tkamB says:

Look I’m happy with the win and beating the Patriots in Foxborough is a big accomplishment, but people acting like this was a statement win need to simmer down a bit. There was 8 total fumbles in this game and we recovered 7 of them, that is just insanely lucky. Theres a lot that needs to be worked on, like why our offense and defense simply disappeared for a quarter and a half. If we meet them again, and I hope we do, we’re going to need to play a lot better than that to win the game.

  384. SourdoughSam says:

The niners will see the patriots again in the big show and they will have their tight end Gronk rematch will be better than this! Hopefully Cowboy is good he is the defensive motor without him Tom almost beat the niners

  385. Ed from AZ says:

Hard to argue against the fact that Kap has a firm hold of the starting job after this win. Nothing against Alex cuz I like him as a QB and a person, but CK showed great poise and throughout the game. Some close fumbled snaps, but perservered through that.
