49ers @ Patriots live blog: Pregame

FOXBORO, Ma. — This is the live blog for the pregame of the 49ers Week 15 game against the New England Patriots. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

2:55 I’m looking out the press box window. I see it’s dark and rainy and there’s a huge tarp covering the entire football field. I bet if you hit that sucker running, you could slide from goalpost to goalpost.

C.J. Spillman came out about a half hour ago and ran a couple of laps around the field. Then he went back into the locker room. Alex Boone is stretching in a t-shirt and sweats under a goal post.

3:04 They’re taking the tarp off the field. Why do they need to cover artificial turf?

3:31 Isaac Sopoaga is warming up on the field in a sleeveless t-shirt.

3:47 Scott Tolzien is standing in the end zone wearing short and a t-shirt. What is he thinking?

3:58 The 49ers inactives are Mario Manningham, Tavares Gooden, Trenton Robinson, Jewel Hampton, Joe Looney and Ian Williams.

3:59 Scott Tolzien is active.

4:00 The Patriots inactives are TE Rob Gronkowski, S Derrick Martin, LB Tracy White, OL Markus Zusevics, DE Jake Bequette and DL Ron Brace.

4:03 Randy Moss will start in place of Mario Manningham.

4:09 David Akers just came up short on a 50-yard warmup field goal kick.

4:10 And now Akers misses a 40-yard field goal off the right upright.

4:10 And now he misses a 49-yard field goal off the right upright. Next kick, he finally makes a 49-yarder.

4:16 It seems Akers is hooking the field goals he’s missing.

4:17 Akers just snuck a 52-yard field goal over the cross bar.

4:18 Akers comes up short on a 55-yard field goal.

4:43 There’s about a half an hour left until kickoff, and it’s pouring. It’s 36 degrees outside.

4:46 Patriots’ top cornerback, Aqib Talib, who injured his hip against the Texans, will play and start. He’ll match up one-on-one with no safety help against Crabtree. Those two faced each other Week 5 last season, and Talib held Crabtree to two catches for 36 yards.

Grant – It’s not too late to revise your prediction. :)

  2. Dangle says:

Grant I would pay your salary for the rest of the year if you hit that slip n slide!

  3. Spaceborn says:

Ah, Boone in a t-shirt – just gotta love that!

  4. Razoreater says:

James could do real damage with his cuts as the defense tries to react, only to lose their footing. This might be the game he takes one to the house.

  5. Hov says:

Big game Sunday!!!!! 9ers all dayevery day

  6. Hov says:

@rib 9er fans wanna here you!!!!!

  7. Crab15 says:

And I want the rest of you chowder head Patriot fans to know something, there’s a new sheriff in town. And his name aint Reggie Hammond.

  8. DS94everXev says:

2 straight 50 point games by Seattle.

I bet their luck ends next week.

  9. JohnJPDX says:

Meantime the Seahawks are blowing up the Bills. I want this win tonight big times.

Turf is made of molecules and molecules are effected by the cold. Clearly the turf material is one which is impacted by the temperature in NE.

  11. dangle says:

Wow, JJ Watt got 3 sacks today and for the moment is tied with Aldon Smith at 19.5 sacks. I’ll bet Aldon heard this and will have even more motivation to make an impact, not that he needed it. Incredibly big game tonight… ridiculously big moment

  12. bayareafanatic says:

Pete Carol up 40-17 in the 4th runs a fake punt. What a classless asshole.

  13. 49erGirl says:

Sooooo ready for this game to start!!! Go Niners!

  14. Fansince 77 says:

Get this — If the Niners lose to NE and SEA, they will most likely be a wildcard and have to play SEA in the first round.
Now that blown hail mary call in week 2 looms big. GB looks like they will be the 2 seed anyway if the Niners don’t step it up and win out.

Pressure is on! This game is for all the marbles!

What’s your take on Tolzien today? That’s interesting. Is that just because none of the other inactives would serve a higher purpose?

    • Big Suede says:

I think Tolzien being active is HUGE news. The niners must be planning to run Kaepernick heavy tonight- it will be an injury risk. Since Smith is concussion sensitive, it makes sense to have a emergency QB just in case.

  16. Crab15 says:

Grant says Akers 1-5 in warm ups….Damn…..Any former kickers on this blog? Does this mean anything?

  17. Tim Sherman jr says:

Dam this is gonna a great gm!!!! I think CK is gonna have a great gm and rise to a W Go niners!!! Any sign of snow?

  18. Ribico says:

Get that mf-ing broom ready. We gonna sweep that miserable AFC east!

    • NinerNation says:

Man, i hope you guys are right predicting a 49er win on the road in Foxboro. I’ve been pretty accurate picking games with Kaep at the helm but this week i think we take a L. The Pats are almost unbeatable at home and we must play damn near a perfect game to pull this one out. It’ll take no mistakes from Kap, sound play calling from Harbs & Roman, and great execution from the offensive line in the run game & pass protection. That means no penalties that kill offensive momentum on key drives like last week against miami, and no defensive penalties that keep Patriot drives alive for Brady. The Pats will probably call alot of screens to slow down our pass rush but the defense has to put Brady on his back early. I think we keep it close and don’t get blown out like the Texans but i see the Pats pulling out a close one at home.

I’m fired up tho’……enjoy the game Rib!

  19. Ribico says:

    Lotsa niner fans in house!

  20. The Grinch says:

Said theyre gonna change the game for the presidents speech where do we watch the game?

  21. The Grinch says:

Hes in that town in conn where the shootings happened..Theres gonna be some speech and said there going to the speech when it airs..

    • Sycophantick Romantick says:

      Grinch

You’re joking, right? Bob Costas throwing his weight around again? Or are you being serious?

  22. The Grinch says:

Dead serious there gonna interrupt the game for his speech..Said to go to nbc sports to watch…What channel is that?
