This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers Week 13 game against the Rams in St. Louis. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.
10:03 The Rams will receive first. The 49ers won the toss and deferred.
10:04 Sam Bradford throws the first pass of the game to Ahmad Brooks, but he drops it.
10:07 On third and one from the Rams’ 48 yard line, Steven Jackson runs up the middle. Patrick Willis meets him in the hole and knocks him back for no gain. The Rams punt. The 49ers start their first drive at their 25 yard line.
10:13 Gore drops a checkdown pass on first down, and then gains three yards up the middle on second down. On third and seven, Janoris Jenkins blitzes and Frank Gore doesn’t pick him up. Kaepernick runs out of the pocket and gains a yard for before going out of bounds. The 49ers punt.
10:15 It didn’t look on TV like there were any open receivers on the first down play action pass. On third down, Kaepernick had to flee the pocket immediately.
10:18 From the St. Louis five yard line, Chris Givens beats Carlos Rogers in the slot for a six-yard completion on first down. On second down, Isaac Sopoaga tackles Steven Jackson behind the line of scrimmage for a one-yard loss. And on third down, Ray McDonald chases Sam Bradford into the end zone. Bradford throws the ball out of bounds, and the Rams punt. The 49ers will start their second drive at their 40 yard line.
10:21 On first down, Greg Roman uses 22 personnel – their best formation. Gore gains 23 yards up the middle.
10:22 Next play, Anthony Davis gets beat to the inside, Kaepernick tries to step up but gets sacked for a 7 yard loss.
10:23 Kaepernick checks down Bruce Miller on second and long. Miller picks up 11 yards, 3 after contact. Kaepernick scrambles for 7 yards on third and 6.
10:25 Next set of downs: Gore up the middle for seven, Gore up the middle for two, Jacobs up the middle on a wham for three yards and a first down.
10:28 On third and four from the eight yard line, Manningham runs a quick slant, beats Janoris Jenkins and Kaepernick drills the pass for a seven yard gain. Next play, Gore runs up the middle for a 1-yard TD. 7-0 49ers.
10:29 The 49ers just went 3-for-3 on third down. Kaepernick scrambled for one, Jacobs ran up the middle for one, and Manningham caught one.
10:30 In his short career, Kaepernick has had a knack for scoring early and putting the opponent on the ropes.
10:31 The Rams played a deep zone and forced Kaepernick to dink and dunk his way down the field. And that’s what Kaepernick did. After Gore dropped a pass, Kaepernick threw his checkdowns to Bruce Miller. That was successful. Miller caught two passes for 17 yards.
10:35 The Rams start their drive at their 20. On first down. Justin Smith tackles Jackson for no gain. On second down, Givens catches a screen pass and runs through Dashon Goldson for a nine-yard gain. On third and one, Bradford throws deep and out of bounds – bad play call and bad execution by the the Rams. They punt. The 49ers take over at their 40 yard line.
10:37 On second and 8, Kaepernick steps up in the pocket to avoid Chris Long, then throws a rocket to Randy Moss for a 16-yard gain. At the end of the first quarter, Kaepernick’s QB rating is an even 100.

I think i heard that if Kap wins his start today it would be the first time since the NFL merger that a QB has won his first 3 starts in a row.

Did anybody notice that Kaepernick didn’t get tackled, not even once, against the Saints? A savant friend of mine told me this, and I couldn’t argue. Jolon Dunbar tackled our former quarterback 3 weeks ago.
Kap got tackled in the 3rd quarter of the Saints game on a bootleg to the right and almost got stripped because he isn’t know a defender was barraling down on him

Love how Kaepernick’s check downs result in 6-7 yard gains, not 2-3 yard gains. I think he keeps the defense honest, forces them to ptay back and protect against downfield throws even when protection breaks down and he’s forced to hurry.

Kap does it all ..check down, throw deep, scrambles for first downs. Defenses have to defend the whole field with Kap and not just squat on the short passes like when Smith is in there.
Great drive. Really efficient against a good aggressive defense. The team is gaining confidence on its third down conversions. Come on D!
