49ers @ Rams live blog: Pregame

This is the live blog for the pregame of the 49ers Week 13 game against the Rams in St. Louis. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.

8:31 Danny Amendola is inactive today.

8:34 Chris Givens will be the Rams No.1 wide receiver.

8:35 LaMichael James is inactive today. 67 percent of you thought he would play.

8:35 A.J. Jenkins is active.

8:36 Here is the full list of 49ers inactive: Scott Tolzien, LaMichael James, Trenton Robinson, Jewel Hampton, Joe Looney, Demarcus Dobbs and Ian Williams.

8:39 Here are the Rams inactives: QB Davis, LB Haggan, WR Amendola, T Barksdale, RB Ganaway, OL Williams and DT Conrath.

8:40 Do you expect A.J. Jenkins to play? If so, how many snaps? Will he catch a pass?

8:44 Greg Roman loves to call the toss sweep run. That was Kendall Hunter’s specialty. It is not Brandon Jacobs’ specialty.

After Hunter got hurt last week, Anthony Dixon came in and ran a toss sweep for a five-yard gain. I’m guessing he’ll run two or three of those plays against the Rams today.

9:00 LaMichael James tweeted “Life isn’t fair…” two hours ago.

9:46 If Aldon Smith gets 1.5 sacks in this game, he will set the 49ers’ franchise record for most sacks in a season.

  1. Razoreater says:

Damn! I was hoping for your inciteful on field reporting like last game….Good Morning to you Grant and fellow fans! Go Niners!!!!!!

  2. steelematic says:

Lets put the women and children to bed and go looking for dinner

  3. BOS49er says:

Did they announce the incatives for the game yet?

  4. steelematic says:

Grant do u still get onfield info through texts and phone calls from your cohorts when your not at a live game? Just curious

  5. BOS49er says:

Nice trade off. il take defending givens over amendola all day. Givens is a deep threat and thats about all

  6. msclemons67 says:

Dobbs is still on the team? I figured he’d be traded to the Lions by now.

  7. undercenter says:

Was hoping to see both Jenkins and LMJ play today. Hopefully Jenkins gets to see the field so we can see maybe what we got. LMJ just be patient my man your turn will come. We better hope Gore stays healthy for the rest of the season.

    • steelematic says:

If jenkins plays hopefully its just for mop up. We have to much talent with moss mann n tree….. Lets finally blow the building up with moss. He has a guy not afraid to at least throw to him. Its been wated talent

  8. Sycophantick Romantick says:

You must be right about then muscling LMJ up for contact in the pro league.

    • msclemons67 says:

A year in the 49ers strength training did wonders for Hunter. Hope it works as well for LMJ or he’ll end up as Dexter Carter 2.0

  9. Jack Hammer says:

No Amendola. This is going to be a blowout.

  10. Razoreater says:

QB Scott Tolzien, RB LaMichael James, S Trenton Robinson, RB Jewel Hampton, G Joe Looney, TE Demarcus Dobbs, NT Ian Williams

  11. Brodie2Washington says:

I think AJ Jenkins will see the field for a few snaps. Not sure he will get any passes thrown his way. If he does, I’m expecting fly sweep, sideline pattern (with Kaepernick rolling out) or shallow drag route.

Reasons LaMichael James is not suiting up could be lack of special teams value, still learning blitz pickups and/or hot routes and more use of Will Tukuafu on power blocking plays.

  12. Hov says:

Wow lmj still can’t get on the field. Anyways let’s go 9ers everyday all day!! Go robokap7!!!

  13. Crab15 says:

Kap takes one shot deep to A.J. Jenkins.

  14. Crab15 says:

Clem, Hov, B2W, Razor, Hammer, Under, Steel , Sean, Bos49er – Big game fellas! We gotta keep the #2 seed!

    • BOS9er says:

One game at a time. IMO having CK in there allows some wiggle room for our D. Even if theyre less than stellar we have an above average chance to still come out with a W

    • steelematic says:

What up Crab.. We should be in the running for a #1 seed if not for Akers. Lol. Maybe he makes up for it this week. Go Kap. Go Niners.

    • Hov says:

@ crab yes sir big game sunday!!!

    • Sean in Canada says:

Damn straight, Crab. I think the Falcons can still be caught, although that tie will be a thorn. Niners just have to take care of their own business and the rest will sort itself out.

    • undercenter says:

Crab I am still looking at getting number 1 seed.

  15. Razoreater says:

James still does not know the playbook?

    • Grumpy Guy says:

I think the earlier comment about blitz pick ups and ST value is probably more the issue.

Only 5 DLs for today’s game with Dobbs and Williams ooth out. I hope no one gets hurt.

  16. Adam707 says:

Looks like we will see a heavy dose of Gore today. And we will see no zone reads. Don’t know why Harbaugh would draft James, a huge playmaker just to sit him week after week.

  17. BOS9er says:

Id rather see a moderate dose of FG and a heavy dose of BJ. Fresh legs+heavy heart=trouble for Db’s trying to tackle

  18. Crab15 says:

    “Jimi Hendrix Curse” facts.

    Used vs Arizona – Win
NOT used vs Rams – Tie
    Used vs Bears – Win
    Used vs Saints – Win

“The Jimi Curse” is 3 for 3 now.
Shall I ask Jimi to put a spell on the Rams today?
    ♪ ♪ Very superstitious, writing’s on the wall ♪♪…..

    • Crab15 says:

      Nobody wants the “Jimi Curse?”
It’s only weird if it doesn’t work. :-)
Jimi is 3 for 3. I need one vote for it or I won’t ask Jimi.

    • ribico says:

Excuse me while I kiss the sky <– would be an excellent touchdown/sack celebration move. What do you say Kap/Aldon? A little throwback action!

      • msclemons67 says:

When I was a kid I thought the line was “excuse me, while I kiss this guy”.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

Anything’s better than Gastineau’s spastic sack act. Any Dino’s out there remember?

      • ribico says:

Heh. I used to think Voodoo Chile was either: a town in the southern hemisphere. Or some awesome eating. Then I learned that’s chili, not chile.

  19. Razoreater says:

    Release the Kracken!AKA Jacobs

  20. Howard Kindschi says:

Some fans are not just interested in whether Jim Harbaugh can coach the 49ers to a win today over the Rams. Harbaw’s influence was not enough to prevent Dermarcus Davis from earning himself a DUI on Friday… Do not talk to us about the Super Bowl. If one of your “men” chooses to drive drunk and kills somebody, Coach, you get an asterisk by your name. Remember your arrest in San Diego. Think of it this way; at Stanford we recognize Coach Shaw for two things (1) beating UCLA and going to the Rose Bowl, and (2) the fact that nearly all of his players will graduate and earn their bachelors degrees (in four or five years). Expand your world, Harbaw. Winning a Super Bowl will not offset a DUI fatality by a player… or the demise of yr second marriage. Priorities… real world values.

  21. Gold Fever says:

They really need to start getting LMJ and AJ Jenkins into the games, if only for a few snaps. It would give the coaching staff a chance to see whether they rise to the occasion and how their talent translates to the NFL, while giving them a morale boost. This is one of the few things that I think we can criticize the coaching staff for not handling correctly.

  22. Prime Time says:

Sunday Countdownn on ESPN just summarized everything beautifully on the whole CK/Alex situation.
Key points: Joe Staley had to have a private convo with coach regarding why he made this decision. Veteran players not happy.

CK has to play well and get to the SB for this decision to be right.

    • MontanaMan16/Don't Always Over Cook It! says:

Agreed! If he don’t go as far as Alex took them with no off season and fewer weopons, then it was a very bad move!

    • domingo says:

What other veteran players are not happy? The only one I have heard of is Staley.

  23. ribico says:

Grant, who’s #2 on the KR/PR depth chart?

    • Prime Time says:

      Cox

      • ribico says:

        Thanks PT.

Maybe a chance to get him some actual game experience? Just in case he’s needed. Like, say, in the 4th quarter of the NFCCG.

      • Prime Time says:

Thanks for putting more worry in me Rib. Ginn is bad enough, now another inexperienced guy we are relying on when it’s the most crucial time of year.
I said all week, the Niners decisions and what the players are saying is starting to concen me.
Lets hope today’s game says otherwise.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Best guess – Cox is the backup punt returner and Jenkins is the backup kick returner.

  24. ribico says:

    >>9:00 LaMichael James tweeted “Life isn’t fair…” two hours ago.

So did Alex break into LMJ’s twitter account? I kid.

  25. Nick says:

Here’s a comprehensive preview/breakdown of the game with a Ram slamt:

we will see something similar to what we saw against the Cards where the Rams lull the QB into a false sense of security by tightening the screws after the first or second drive

Yeah right. Niners win this game by at least 2 TDs.

Advice to Alex Smith: Never drive into a parking lot which you cannot drive out of. (paraphrase of the opening line by Robert De Niro in the film Ronin)

Speaking of covering the betting line:
Alex Smith will finish strong – whatever that means.

  27. bayareafanatic says:

Bravo Howie Long. He said in regards to QB’s. QB’s that play it safe can be good. QB’s that take chances can be great.
    Amandola OUT!

  28. Lou says:

Wow. I’m totally surprised about Jenkins getting activated over James. I was sure it would be the other way around. I thought they could easily make up for Williams being out by using Moss and Ginn more and letting Manningham and Crabtree take turns in the slot. I thought they would need James more to make up for the loss of Hunter. And isn’t James the back up punt returner? Oh well, I’m getting used to just trusting the coaches and not second guessing. They seem to love surprising me. And so far it’s been working well.

  29. Crab15 says:

Once again, “The Jimi Curse”…..put that spell on those damn Rams Jimi!
