49ers @ Rams live blog: Third quarter

This is the live blog for the third quarter of the 49ers Week 13 game against the Rams in St. Louis. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.

11:35 The 49ers get the ball first. They start at their 20 yard line.

11:37 Kaepernick scrambles for six yards on first down, Gore gains one yard on second down, and on third and three, Kaepernick fires to Crabtree, but Crabtree doesn’t turn his head quickly enough, so the pass falls incomplete. The 49ers go three and out and punt. The Rams take over at their 22 yard line.

11:39 Greg Roman is getting outcoached by Jeff Roman. It seems Fisher knows Romans tendencies. The Rams look ready for everything Roman calls.

11:45 The Rams drive down to the 49ers’ 36, and on third and nine Bradford dumps it off to Jackson, who breaks a Goldson tackle and picks up 22 yards.

11:48 On third and 8 from the 11, Bradford targets Rogers in the slot, and hits Pettis for a 7 yard gain. The Rams want to go for it on fourth and 1 from the 4. They call timeout.

11:51 Bradford throws it up to Pettis in the end zone and Tarell Brown knocks the pass away. Great play. 49ers take over on down at their four yard line.

11:56 Greg Roman calls two boring runs up the middle on first and second down and go backward. On third down, Kaepernick bails out Roman by throwing a 14-yard dart to Manningham to convert. Next play, Roman calls a play action pass and the Rams see it coming. They blitz, the O-line doesn’t pick it up, Kaepernick scrambles away and tries to throw the ball away from the end zone, but the pass doesn’t make it back to the line of scrimmage. Safety 7-2. Mike Perreira says the refs made the incorrect call – it should not have been a safety. Either way, it’s Rams ball.

12:01 Aldon Smith is flagged for a holding on the first play, but the 49ers force the Rams to go three-and-out after that. The Rams pin the punt at the 1 yard line.

12:07 Kaepernick gets the 49ers out of their own end zone with two beautiful passes to Crabtree – the first for 10 yards on a slant, the second for 22 yards on a an out route. Kaepernick had to put touch on the long out because there was a defender in front of Crabtree. Two big throws to end the third quarter.

  1. 23Jordan/ says:

    Ill take 6.

  2. Neal says:

Jeff Fisher is a much better defensive coordinator/head coach then Greg Roman. Time to get in the game Jim, as you had said that Roman calls all the plays, he is clueless in St. Louis

  3. MontanaMan16/Only the names have changed. says:

Outta sync is what you get with change.

  4. Ed from AZ says:

whats up with Crabtree and his alligator arms?

  5. 23Jordan/ says:

Target Manningham, not Crabs. Crabs is lost today.

  6. Adam says:

Bad decision there. Crabs was doubled inside. I saw a receiver wide open on the edge.

  7. Adam707 says:

Offense is mighty boring. Looking elementary. Kaep looks absolutely lost out there right now. O line certainly not helping.

  8. Prime Time says:

No more surprise element or unknown with Kap. Fisher putting together a masterful defensive game plan. I said all week, Fisher will have a good game plan and he has rattled CK.

  9. NINERS says:

I’m a 49er fan before all else, but I’ll admit I was very skeptical about the switch to Kaep. Thus far, the offense is not a bit more impressive than it was with Smith. Kaep has extended plays, but it hasn’t led to much.

I’m increasingly skeptical after that first half/first drive of the second, for the following reason: The kid needs time to grow, and we don’t have time for Kaep to go through growing pains right now! We’re in the middle of a playoff run, trying to get the division, home field advantage, at least the number two seed. Would REALLY appreciate a defensive score right now.

  10. Petri says:

IF we lose this game, do we go back to Smith who has a proven record, or do we risk throwing away a possible Superbowl appearance?

  11. Fansince 77 says:

“Show me that smile again.. Don’t waste another minute…..” Theme song from the show, Growing Pains…

  12. undercenter says:

The D gonna have to keep it going!!

  13. Fourth & Alex says:

Defense starting to loosen up. Kaep needs to lead us on a drive next possession.

  14. Big Suede says:

I wish the niners would have been more creative in this game. I was hoping we would have James out there and maybe they would try some no huddle- read option- oregon type stuff. They could still try some no huddle-

  15. james says:

Yep. Wide open receiver missed and no mention that the ball was probably thrown too hard with no touch. I like CK and I’m rooting for him, but this ‘CK can do no wrong’ coverage means I’m going to switch for some objective analysis.

  16. harbinger says:

Couldn’t be that Fischer knows Kap’s tendencies. No, gotta be inside Roman’s head!

    /bias

  17. domingo says:

    That was close

  18. 23Jordan/ says:

    Great tackle Goldson!

  19. Sycophantick Romantick says:

They need to get CK going on bootlegs and roll outs. Interested to see what Jack will find on downfield coverages in his film study.

  20. Fourth & Alex says:

Can’t expect the defense to play fantastic all game. We need a drive soon on offense. Give the guys a break!

  21. NinerNation says:

    Get off your blocks Bowman.

  22. domingo says:

    Hold em to a fg

  23. Fesnyc says:

Starting to look like the last game vs rams. Niners have lost initiative

  24. DS94everXev says:

Can we please go with the other hot hand now? This hand has frozen.

  25. Adam says:

If the Rams score here, the offense is going to have to step up quick.

    • NinerNation says:

No question. If we hold the rams to a field goal and put 7 more on the board we can gain some momentum and lean on them with the lead till they wear down in the second half.

  26. 23Jordan/ says:

Play of the game. Come on DDDD!!!

  27. domingo says:

    Hlold em

  28. undercenter says:

OK D get tough big play

  29. ninermd says:

Lmao!!! Bs makes an apperence to slam ck. we’d be shut out if Smith was playing. Balee dat!

  30. Prime Time says:

Fisher going for it cause he knows 49er offense is struggling?

  31. 23Jordan/ says:

Rams will kick the field goal after the timeout. Thru are about to get STONED on 4th if they don’t. Lets go DDDD!

  32. domingo says:

    YEA!

  33. ninermd says:

    Nice stand!!!!

  34. 23Jordan/ says:

    That’s my DDDD!!!

  35. undercenter says:

    Big play!!!

  36. Giant Fan says:

Rams shoulda done a fake FG attempt instead.

  37. Ed from AZ says:

    Phuck Yeah D!!

  38. domingo says:

A tough rivalry game. Who wants it more.

  39. ribico says:

    Alright D!

  40. Fansince 77 says:

    Gore Time.

  41. BOS49er says:

    All right TB great paly

  42. Adam707 says:

    Defense bailing out the offense

  43. domingo says:

    Way to conservative.

  44. ribico says:

Go CK – another record setting drive!

  45. Fourth & Alex says:

They’re protecting Kaep too much backed up near the end zone. Turn him loose, take a chance, see what you got!

  46. domingo says:

    Sweet!

  47. NinerNation says:

Fisher has got this team playing hard. Peep the crowd noise. They are fired up man!

  48. 23Jordan/ says:

    Laser show, back on schedule!

  49. neal says:

That is what I am talking about

  50. big niner says:

G ro is toooooooooo conservative!! he’s killing this offense.

  51. Fansince 77 says:

    That was dumb.

  52. undercenter says:

great just great!!!!! this offense sucks right now.

  53. Crab15 says:

    O-line is garbage today.

  54. DS94everXev says:

Can my boy Brown get some love here now?

  55. Adam says:

    Terrible.

  56. nineruno says:

    This is why experience matters.

  57. Crab15 says:

Mike Solari poor coaching this week. O-line not prepared for multiple looks.

  58. neal says:

    Good calls ref

  59. 23Jordan/ says:

Bad play Kap. Can’t ride with you on that one. Gotta get rid of the ball.

  60. Adam707 says:

Wow horrible horrible play by Kaep there. Runs 15 yards back. Talk about opening up the playbook. This offense is absolutely pathetic today. Kaep showing his inexperience.

  61. domingo says:

    Gore missed his block

  62. ribico says:

    Krap.

  63. Coffee's for closers says:

Alex Smith would not have made such a foolish rookie mistake.

    • Ed from AZ says:

+1. Thats where the trade-off is.

And it was the right call by the refs, Kap should not have run that far back, he could have thrown it away outside of the end zone or taken the sack and no points would be on the board for STL. Killer after the big 3rd down conversion.

    • msclemons67 says:

Interesting that Kaep is having a bad game but there seems to be no move to insert the Precious.

I guess the coaches prefer a bad Kaep over Alex.

  64. Fourth & Alex says:

That was not IG. The line of scrimmage was crossed where the ball landed. The out of bounds doesn’t matter.

  65. neal says:

    Bad calls ref

  66. ninermd says:

    Another bull*hit call

  67. 23Jordan/ says:

We got jobbed on the call because coach didn’t know the rule.

  68. Fansince 77 says:

You can put this on CK.
Jeff Fisher is outcoaching JH and GR.
    Again.

  69. 23Jordan/ says:

    Lets go DDDD!

  70. big niner says:

Roman is killing this offense. !!!!11I hate this guy!!!!!! way overated!!

  71. NINERS says:

    Help.

  72. Visitorthissundayonly says:

Lot of excuses. Sometimes you just take the sack. Alot of the excuses used for Kap today were once used for Alex and the Kap Supporters lambasted the Smith Supporters for it.

    • MontanaMan16/Only the names have changed. says:

I said that and my post got deleted I think!

    • tkamB says:

Or maybe the “excuses” have some merit, Kaepernick hasn’t been great today but the playcalling has been lacking, wrs have dropped balls, and the pass-blocking has been hit or miss. Maybe this team isn’t perfection outside of the qb position as people have been saying all year?

    • Randy says:

      right you are…

  73. ninermd says:

Wow again. Bad call. So shut it haters

  74. 23Jordan/ says:

Freakin refs don’t know the rules!!!!!

  75. BOS49er says:

Its a good thing our QB ran 20 yards back to avoid that sack, oh wait No its not. Im sure AS would ahve taken the 3 yrd loss and not tried to use his superior legs

    • Fourth & Alex says:

Can’t argue with that. Would have only been a 6-7 yard loss on Alex. Still, I like what I see from the kid.

  76. undercenter says:

Good thing the D came to play

  77. 23Jordan/ says:

    Watch the fake!!!!!!

  78. NINERS says:

    No more safeties, please…

  79. DS94everXev says:

    Adam

That is why AS says it is ok to take a sack. Before the endzone. No Safety. No points given up.

This game is as I’ve feared. Thank God for our D/ST saving CK’s led offense. An awful lot of checkdowns and pressures.

  80. NinerNation says:

What a kick! Niners backed up on the 1 yrd line this is going to be tough.

  81. domingo says:

    Throw on first down.

  82. Fansince 77 says:

The Offense has to man up and make plays. Clearly CK is not having a good day. They need to pick it up for him.

If you want to be the bully, you better bully up.

  83. Adam707 says:

    Another safety coming?

  84. domingo says:

    Flag

  85. BOS49er says:

Great starting field position. lets see how quick a learner CK is and if he’s more carefull in this part of the field

  86. domingo says:

    Refs are killing us

  87. 23Jordan/ says:

    O line killing us!

  88. NINERS says:

Hard for the O-line NOT to hold in this situation…Rams are shooting the gaps, really hitting it.

  89. domingo says:

    Sweet

  90. Adam says:

Huh, seems like it takes to win. Who’d have thunk it.

  91. ninermd says:

    Nice.

  92. 23Jordan/ says:

    Good catch crabs!!!

  93. Fourth & Alex says:

And another beautiful play made by Kaep backed up.

  94. undercenter says:

Nice CK that was very nice

  95. 23Jordan/ says:

    Good coverage too!

  96. domingo says:

    Flag again

  97. 23Jordan/ says:

    Penalties!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  98. Crab15 says:

    Finally MC! Nice catch

  99. NinerNation says:

    Keep hating on Kap

    • NINERS says:

Nobody is “hating” on Kaep, as near as I can tell. There’s a skepticism that some people hold because, especially on this blog, an irrational dislike of Alex Smith led many people to criticize his every move and claim that Kaep was the answer. So far this game, against a coach who planned for Kaep and a good D, he’s been little better than Smith – if not worse.

  100. 23Jordan/ says:

    What a freakin pass!!!

  101. ninermd says:

    What a throw.

  102. Ninerman says:

What’s up with the play calling? Nothing down field, the Rams are pressing the line, come on Roman put the hot dog down!!!

  103. Adam says:

    Nice throw there.

  104. Crab15 says:

MC…….Nice catch 22 yards and talkin smack to big-mouth Rams CB’s.

  105. ribico says:

    Great touch , Kap!

  106. Neal says:

AS would never of made that throw in a million years, what I mean is that he would not even try.

  107. NinerNation says:

Agree with Moose johnson, Kap is making some nice throws on this drive

  108. Fourth & Alex says:

They’re going to have to live by Kaep. Gore is getting nothing right now. O-line with no push in the running game.

  109. Prime Time says:

No rhythm, no balance, no explosive plays, conservative play calling because they have no faith in the QB, very concerning.

When you idiots say Smith can’t make that throw, that’s an ignorant comment!

  110. Crab15 says:

Crabtree is fired up! Nice play

  111. Ninerman says:

    Nice pitch and catch

  112. Fourth & Alex says:

And yet another pew pew laser from Kaep on the slant. Defense is playing off worrying about Kaep’s big play extending ability.

  113. Crab15 says:

O-line FINALLY starting to give Kap time to throw.

  114. Fourth & Alex says:

I’m loving these bang bang slants with the howitzer under center.

  115. Fourth & Alex says:

    Looked like a designed draw

  116. NINERS says:

Ha throw the slant every play? Why not?!?

  117. MontanaMan16/Only the names have changed. says:

    Missed Moss. Wide open!

  118. Jack Hammer says:

With the way the D has played today that should be ballgame.

  119. Ed from AZ says:

Is this the type of Offense we envisioned for a deep playoff run? Once teams get enough time to study it, its no longer innovative. I have confidence in Kap, because he has more promise than other “dual threat” QBs.

  120. Ninerman says:

I don’t understand what Romans calling, thank God for that D and special teams.

  121. Fourth & Alex says:

Gore averaging 2.5 yards per carry today. O-line is getting schooled in the running game.

  122. Ninerman says:

    The Cowboy!!

  123. Fourth & Alex says:

How do keep getting manhandled by Jackson 3rd downs?

    • Ed from AZ says:

Same as last game where S. Jackson seems to have room to run after the catch on 3rd down. Too much open space underneath for him.

  124. Fourth & Alex says:

This game may come down to a turnover.

    • Ed from AZ says:

None yet right? The Rams were the ones who almost strip sacked Kap last time so hopefully the O line will keep their blocking strong

  125. Ninerman says:

Jackson is looking all pro today against our D

  126. Giant Fan says:

    woops
