49ers @ Seahawks live blog: Third quarter

SEATTLE, Wa., — This is the live blog for the third quarter of the 49ers Week 16 game against the Seahawks. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

7:17 Akers’ kickoff sails out of the end zone. The Seahawks start at their 20 yard line.

7:18 Lynch runs up the middle and gains three.

7:19 Lynch runs up the middle, evades two tackles and gains nine yards. First and 10 at the Seattle 32.

7:19 Wilson throws to Rice. Goldson hits Rice and the pass falls incomplete. Second and 10.

7:20 Lynch runs around the left end and Bowman tackles him after a one-yard gain.

7:21 On third and nine, Wilson scrambles, changes directions about eight times but only gains six yards. The Seahawks will punt.

7:22 Ginn calls for a fair catch at the SF 20 yard line with no one around him.

7:24 The 49ers come out in 22 personnel, Kaepernick play fakes and hits Moss for 13 yards.

7:25 Next play, Kaepernick play fakes and hits Crabtree for a 35-yard gain down the right sideline. Crabtree beat Sherman.

7:26 Next play, Kaepernick play fakes and throws into the end zone for Moss, who makes no play on the pass. Second and 10.

7:26 Next play, Kaepernick completes a WR screen to Manningham in the left flat. As he’s hit by the second defender, he hurts his knee and drops the ball to the turf. The Seahawks recover. Manningham is still down on the field.

7:29 Manningham slowly walks off the field under the arms of two trainers.

7:29 The Seahawks start at their 32 yard line.

7:30 On first down, Ray McDonald chases Wilson out of the pocket and he throws it away.

7:31 Next play, Lynch gains eight yards.

7:31 Wilson hits Lynch in the flat for a 10-yard gain. First and 10 at midfield.

7:32 Wilson throws deep into the end zone for Baldwin, and Whitner breaks it up. Second and 10. The Seahawks are not messing around.

7:33 Wilson escapes pressure in the pocket again, scrambles to the right, pump fakes to make Brooks jump, then runs right around him for nine yards. Third and one.

7:34 Michael Robinson runs up the middle for one yard. First down.

7:34 Wilson pitches to Sidney Rice on a reverse, who throws deep right to Rogers, who drops the interception. Do you think Carroll wants to run up the score on Harbaugh?

7:35 Next play, Bowman tackles Lynch after a two-yard gain.

7:36 On third and eight, Wilson throws a missile to Jerome Kearse for a 17-yard gain.

7:36 Manningham will not return to the game.

7:36 The 49ers burn their first timeout of the second half. 5:50 left in the third quarter. Still 28-6 Seahawks.

7:38 The Seahawks offense is 7-for-8 on third down and 2-for-2 in the red zone. The 49ers defense is getting embarrassed.

7:39 On first down, Wilson takes a shot at the end zone. Kearse beat Brown down the left side line, but Kearse dropped in the end zone.

7:39 Wilson completes a short pass to Miller, and Whitner unloads on him. Gain of four. Third and six from the SF 17.

7:39 Wilson hits Turbin down the right side line for 11 yards. First and goal at the six. The Seahawks are now 8-for-9 on third down.

7:41 Bowman tackles Lynch after a gain of two. Second and goal from the four.

7:42 Wilson play fakes, rolls to the right and throws the ball away. I don’t expect the Seahawks to go conservative and play for the field goal on third down, do you?

7:42 Wilson throws it up to Baldwin in the back right corner of the end zone, and he catches it. Rogers gets beaten yet again. He’s a liability for the 49ers. 35-6 Seahawks with 3:22 left in the third quarter.

7:44 Will Tukuafu has a back injury and his return his questionable.

7:46 James returns the kickoff 35 yards to the SF 30 yard line.

7:48 Kaepernick hits Celek down the middle of the field for a gain of 35. First and 10 at the Seahawks 35.

7:49 Next play, Kaepernick throws it right to Lane, who tips it and Moss catches it. Gain of six.

7:50 Next play, Kaepernick hits Celek for six yards. First and 10 at the 23.

7:50 Kaepernick throws behind Crabtree. Incomplete. Second and 10.

7:51 Gore runs up the middle for 18 yards. First and goal at the five.

7:52 Kaepernick throws it over Celek’s head in the back of the end zone on first and goal.

7:53 James runs a sweep around the left side for two yards. Third and goal from the three.

That’s the end of the third quarter.

  1. Me says:

Come on niners, let’s get outplayed and outcoached again this half!

  2. Big niner says:

    lets go D!!

  3. MontanaMan16 says:

I think our O is already too simplified!

  4. fesnyc says:

“fewer shifts and motions” – kudos to the earlier poster (whose name escapes me) who said that

  5. Big niner says:

line Aldon on the other side

  6. fesnyc says:

first contact 5 yards down the line – that’s dominating

  7. Big niner says:

    Goldson!!!

  8. Big Suede says:

Look at that- Harbaugh says he is going to stop all the silly shifting. FINALLY. I hope the offense flows this half and Harbaugh learns a lasting lesson. If it takes a butt-kicking for the niners to learn the complicated shifts aren’t worth the trouble- it will have all been worth it.

  9. 23jordan/ says:

HUGE 3rd down play! Have some pride DD

  10. fesnyc says:

wow that kid is elusive – he really does look like Tarkenton, except he’s stronger

  11. BarNone says:

    I’m a Smither. A Justin Smither.

  12. 23jordan/ says:

    You gotta be KIDDING me!!!

  13. Big niner says:

    Wilson is slippery!!

  14. Big Suede says:

Wow- that was pretty impressive of wilson- that guy can move.

  15. pete4mtx says:

I think wilson made me miss on that one

  16. 23jordan/ says:

    lets go Offense.

  17. Neal says:

We are coming back, we will make this into a game.

  18. Ribico says:

Glad he didn’t make the first. Our d would have gassed after that.

  19. Big niner says:

Fundamentals are lacking here. Focus on his waist not his shoulders or legs!!!

  20. Neal says:

The Smithers have so many multiple profiles right now.

  21. Big niner says:

    no huddle come on

  22. Txtree49er says:

O needs to step it up…we need 7

  23. BarNone says:

    Nice catch Crab

    Great catch Crabs!!

  25. Big niner says:

    the oline has adjusted

  26. MontanaMan16 says:

    See Sherman cheating?

  27. MontanaMan16 says:

    PI

  28. Big niner says:

    PI!!

  29. BarNone says:

    Manningham hurt on that play.

  30. MontanaMan16 says:

    Manningham out for year!

  31. 23jordan/ says:

    Wow.

  32. Neal says:

    Can’t get a break

  33. Big niner says:

damn!!! that was Kaps fault. he’s hesitating. That’s twice on that same play.

  34. pete4mtx says:

    No pi on moss throw….figures
    We’re dropping like flies

  35. Big Suede says:

Wow- we are going to need to get Jenkins involved next week. This sucks. The injuries are mounting up.

  36. fesnyc says:

this is the danger with letdown games. in a letdown game, either because you’re tired or your mind isnt right (ie, you arent thinking like a predator), you get outhit. outhit means injuries. Niners have been lucky on the injury but, but also they tend to outhit everyone else. lately, not as much on either score.

  37. domingo says:

    Time for AJ jenkins.

  38. Big niner says:

Jenkins will get to play now.

  39. pete4mtx says:

I would love a rematch at da stick…

  40. msclemons67 says:

“Me” and “santa” are probably cheering Mannigham’s injury now.

  41. Big niner says:

    crazy holding!!

  42. santa says:

we have only 3 wr’s active. brilliant JH

  43. fesnyc says:

brooks needed to hit lynch on that play. mental mistake

  44. pete4mtx says:

    Cmon 55 HIT wilson

  45. Txtree49er says:

Can anyone say that we look like a playoff team right now?

    • Big Suede says:

      you are a complete clown.

      • Txtree49er says:

Why am I a complete clown…have we stopped sea on any drive? If we keep this 2 up and 1 down crap up…we will be out of it ..

      • msclemons67 says:

@Suede, txtree is correct – the 49ers look hopeless tonight. Hopefully it’s just a glitch.

        This is painful.

      • Big Suede says:

Dude- almost EVERYONE predicted this would be a loss before the season. 4 out of 5 on espn predicted the niners would lose today. It is the toughest place to play in the league.

They needed to win one in either NE or SEA. So they won last week. The niners will win in arizona and have a home game during the wild card round.

Seeing as how the last few super bowls worked out- the niners may be better off not having the bye. All this sky is falling stuff is silly. Clownish.

      • Ribico says:

A loss, yes. An embarrassment? Well….

      • Txtree49er says:

Did they expect it to be so bad? We need to be hot going in to the playoffs…not like this..clownish? No…we needed to play a game that made a statement…we did not..Seattle has..

    • MontanaMan16 says:

Not right now but maybe come playoff time we will. I don’t mind playing anywhere, as long as it aint in Seattle.

    • fesnyc says:

no, but if i recall correctly, we got our butts smoked by Philly in 1988 on the way to a SB victory, so i’ve seen a Niner SB-bound team look bad in December before. no predictions, tho!

  46. Big niner says:

    Brooks !! why you jumping?

  47. Mr Rock says:

Pull all the starters. Put in Alex to manage the loss.

  48. 23jordan/ says:

I guess Russell wilson is a lot better than guys said he was.

  49. pete4mtx says:

    Rodgers!!!####

  50. Mr. Everything says:

    Rogers is SOOOOOO bad

  51. 23jordan/ says:

    Carlos???? Catch the ball

  52. Ribico says:

    That was the redskins Rogers.

  53. Big niner says:

    rodgers is horrible tonight!

  54. Big niner says:

    nice halftime adjustments, smh

  55. BarNone says:

It feels like Seattle’s had the ball for a week.

  56. Mr. Everything says:

    Grant

Your boy Prime aka “Santa” needs to get the permanent boot. He’s mocking MsClemons’ wife’s plight with cancer right now.

  57. 23jordan/ says:

Brooks , you have to stay home!

  58. Big niner says:

    Brooks having a bad game

  59. michael says:

Grant getting embarrassed because they cant stay off the field.

  60. JohnJPDX says:

    defense is dead tonite

  61. pete4mtx says:

Brooks has no idea who has the ball

  62. fesnyc says:

thot it was illegal to cut block between the tackles?

  63. 23jordan/ says:

    Rogers got embarrassed tonight !

  64. Neal says:

    Carlos Rogers absolutley sucks!!

  65. fesnyc says:

gotta tip my cap: nice toss, and a great catch

  66. Ribico says:

Damn. These guys are going to lay a 50 burger on us tonight.

  67. msclemons67 says:

Do we have a defense tonight? We’re being slaughtered by a midget.

  68. MontanaMan16 says:

Nobodies calling the false start on the right side of the line?

  69. Big niner says:

    game over!!!

  70. MontanaMan16 says:

Rewind it and someone tell me that right tackle didn’t false start!

  71. Mr. Everything says:

That wasn’t actually a catch. But they didn’t send it up for review. The ball came loose when he went to the ground. If they don’t show it again, check the A22 game film or watch your replay.

  72. BarNone says:

No Justin, no pressure, no playoff wins.

    The QB doesn’t matter.

  73. fesnyc says:

    Santa = DS.

  74. Big niner says:

Ass whooping is what this team needed. We are beatable if we don’t come to play. Green bay has to win in Minnesota. not easy but doable

  75. Detroit9er says:

I’d pull just about every defensive starter now.. why risk anymore injuries? They look exhausted and very slow

  76. JohnJPDX says:

WWL don’t play in the playoffs!

  77. bayareafanatic says:

Rogers drops an int then gives up a td

  78. I missed the toilet and Kaepped all over the place says:

Jesus this is a slaughter, 50% completion rate, penalties all over the place. Its been awhile guys but to me it looks like a rivalry has been born.

  79. msclemons67 says:

Dammit – Grant banned another Smither and now the blog is all messed up.

  80. Mr. Everything says:

    So, about that salary cap…

Anyone still want to keep Rogers?

  81. Big niner says:

2 PI’s in the endzone not called.

  82. domingo says:

    I like this Celek

  83. 55Niner says:

Who do we pin the blame on for the piss poor showing tonight?? The coaches, the offense, the defense, Kaepernick, the whole team?…who gets all of the negative print this coming week?

  84. fesnyc says:

Niners losing a lot of artillery: KW, KH, MM, VD. running short.

  85. Big niner says:

    hurry up

  86. MontanaMan16 says:

    Kap is really inaccurate tonight!

  87. 23jordan/ says:

Run the ball instead of forcing throws Kap.

  88. Coffee's for closers says:

WTF isn’t Jenkins active? I’m gonna have to start lining up with Grant on this one. If he isn’t ready to play by this point then he had no business being picked in the first round.

  89. loony says:

I’m sick and tired of seeing a lack of coordination between offense and defense is not even mentionable I understand smith is out but this makes no sense they beat us on man to man they beat us on zone it’s sad to say I predicted this ,the way we’ve been playing I said “if our offense doesn’t show we’re hit because they have strong defense like us” and if now our defense can’t stop their offense wtf they are 9/8 not to mention the running wow. Offense is not going to win playoffs like this coordination is horrible, they are throwing when they should run and running when they should be throwing, sorry to say if Colin doesn’t use this and last game as his playoff experience its like I said before he is our future but its unfair to the fans that we have to use our so long awaited season that we knew we could finally have our year to start giving Colin room to grow and most like giving up this seasons championship so he can get that experience to possibly win next year. In the playoffs just throw in Alex n hope we take it all the way. I’m sad as a 49er fan to see us doing so bad knowing we are so good. If we don’t get no.2 no bye week n no home field which means this what we are seeing especially, seeing Seattle again.

  90. john darnell says:

    Boom! 49′ers need a M.A.S.H. unit..

  91. Daniners says:

Here comes all the doubters. If u really thought the 49ers would show up u were fooling yourselves. When they dont have a must win situation they dont play well. I would also say these officials calls have been awful. Completely one sided from get go.

  92. Allan says:

    It’s Grant’s fault.

    He and those jinx predictions.

  93. Big Sky Niner says:

I know two things for sure. First, whatever defensive inadequacies the Niners had tonight were COMPLETELY due to the absence of Justin Smith.

Second, whatever offensive problems the team experienced had NOTHING to do with Colin Kaepernick. The “babay Jesus” can do no wrong.

And, if you believe those two assertions I have a bridge I would like to sell to you.

  94. 23jordan/ says:

Sherman is a good player. No question about that. too bad Seattle won’t have him for the playoffs.

  95. 55Niner says:

Someone tell Kaepernick that our guys are wearing white jerseys……I really don’t think Seattle needs his help tonight..

  96. Prime Time says:

    Wow!

  97. msclemons67 says:

Man – this is a total bummer. 49ers just got beaten in every phase of the game tonight. I think this might be worse than the Giants’ loss.

This game was lost on the first series. The defense didn’t come to play and without the defense the 49ers have no shot.

Time for a good Zinfandel. Maybe two.

  98. Daniners says:

Prediction: Minnesota beats GB, Niners beat AZ next week…we still end up with bye. This is the best thing to happen to this team. They will play Seattle again @ stick and it will b different

  99. loony says:

Yeaaaa we only do well when we need to, look where that got the giants out of the playoffs, well we needed this one n “boom” we blew it. See not to sound haterissh, but if smith is hurt( justin) our defensive coordinator should make adjustments, that’s no.1; no.2 I’m sick of seeing this Colin supporters and Alex supporters ducking it out saying who’s better the fact is he’s fu*%ing up bench play Alex. The man is consistent and we don’t need experimentations when it’s win or go home, point blank period at leat we know the offense is going to be a little more quiet but no turnovers and steady moving and touchdowns that progress slower but it’s all good that gives defense time to rest and destroy now the flip team is unstable no rest fatigue and so on… Use Colin for next years start and mold him to be a starter. Mistake, cost big but shouldn’t be at our expense we are the fans and deserve the bowl this year. Then anger thing you have a different offense why are we running similar plays to when Alex is playing change it up, route , audibles if needed n take it long n set runs to back up what ur throws can’t finish not run and throw to finish off ur runs no sense. I don’t know I hope harb gota plan because I see things just getting harder possibly no rest week.

  100. Daniners says:

One silver lining which will serve us well when we play these guys @ stick…our oline has not given up a ton of pressure on Kaep…defense lost this game more than anything

  101. Daniners says:

Kaep is showing heart right now…that matters later

  102. john darnell says:

    Hear the crickets?

  103. Daniners says:

Looney, no one bitched about Kaep last week…smith would had 10 sacks by now and we wouldn’t have moved anything. We would still have gotten our a** kicked. Defense was spent and u don’t win if your defense doesn’t come to play. That’s all. We will still show up next week and in the playoffs and if we play Seattle again,
