49ers suspend Brandon Jacobs for the rest of the season

The 49ers just announced that they have suspended running back Brandon Jacobs for the rest of the season.

As you probably know, Brandon Jacobs wrote this weekend on Instagram that he is “rotting away” on the 49ers and, “This is by far the worst year” of his career.

The 49ers did not say whether Brandon Jacobs will get paid while he’s suspended or not.

Last season, the 49ers cut Braylon Edwards. I believe suspension is different. I’m not sure what the 49ers are trying to say. Couldn’t they just have cut Jacobs?

According to Matt Maiocco, they’re suspending Jacobs to prevent him from playing with others teams this season.

  1. Steveo says:

    Braylon edwa

  2. Grimey9er says:

It might make more sense to just suspend him even though he takes up a roster space. If they release him he leaves with the knowledge of the playbook and vengeance on his mind.

  3. undercenter says:

This does not surprise me at all. As we all know JH doesnt say anything to the press, and when Jacobs went public about a internal problem I kinda figured thats the end of him. I guess he stays on the 53 man roster, inactive. That means more carries for Dixon and LMJ.

  4. Josh says:

The guy is a whiner. He might have size, but he has no heart. Attitude matters. It’s not like you aren’t playing when you practice midweek. Better than sitting on a sofa. Go apologize for once and get back in dude. You ain’t young.

  5. old coach says:

Grant i’m sure harbaugh would’nt ever answer the question but i wonder who wanted Jacobs more Baalke or harbaugh

    • Grant Cohn says:

      I would guess Baalke.

      • old coach says:

You do’nt think Harbaugh does’nt give Baalke a shopping list and its his job to fill it to harbaughs liking

      • Grant Cohn says:

Sometimes, yes. I just don’t think Jacobs ever fit into Harbaugh’s system. Jacobs can’t cut.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        OK, Grant, here’s a question.
What if…….its Gore that goes down for the season instead of Hunter? Wouldn’t Harbaugh then have activated Jacobs as the change-of-pace rather than LMJ? Its just my 1st hunch, not really sure that’s right. I did see James look good between the tackles a couple of times.
Politicly its already over; he’s toast now.

  6. DrAmyOn says:

They should just cut him. I doubt he could hurt the organization much seeing as he had what maybe 2 or 3 plays with the team. His rotting on the bench has probably effected what little he knew of the playbook. Let him hook up with someone that will play him. Never made any sense that they signed him anyway.

    • thedoggs says:

I think we didn give him a chance. He deserved that much. He couldve helped. Stop the F Gore show and learn how to win with everyone!!!!!!

  7. Brotha Tuna says:

I don’t blame him for being restless and frustrated, but you need to understand your surroundings. On Harbaugh’s ship you only open your mouth to promote the company line, or to drink the KoolAid! ; >0
    Just saying.

    • Josh says:

Kaepernick is the greatest of all time and Crabtree’s hands are perfect. Alex Smith is our guy and we only evaluated Peyton Manning. The team, the team, the team.

      • 23jordan/ says:

Don’t forget that Alex is a pro bowler and not a game manager. He is an expert and he has a hot hand and he’s our guy. We are lock step with Alex.

now Alex, would you clean my pitching wedge and hand me my putter? lean this Pro V1 for me too!

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Clean**

      • DS94everXev says:

Did he make the Title game in 2000 on a team expected to win no more than 6 games? AS did in 2011. Because that is what matters here.

JH had AS pick up his HC of the year award. Did Bledsoe do that for Bills HC Of the Year? That is what matters.

Did Drew’s last game prior to his injury a record breaking performance like AS? That is what matters.

Have the Niners dominated with CK in ways they didn’t under AS in a similar fashion that Brady did when he took over? That is what matters.

Did Bill say he would stay with the hot hand? That is what matters.

Did Bledsoe win 6 of the 8 games he played in 2001 putting them in a prime position to enter the playoffs like AS did or was it Brady who did that? That is what matters.

There are vitually no similarities at all. Nobody said the Pats are Super Bowl bound in 2001 with Bledsoe like they have with the Niners prior to this season with AS. The Pats got the country’s support in 2001 due to Brady. Has the country gotten behind CK? No.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        BS,
are you still littering the room with talk about our backup?
Newsflash. He carries a clipboard. We have another QB now. This is a 49er room in which we discuss players that start and impact the game.
You gonna start ranting about Tolzien next? How about Dixon. Oh wait, Dixon isn’t a good example. He actually plays.
        Move on…….
You sound like the pathetic guy who sits at the end of a bar drink in hand every day talking about the girl that walked out on him 8 years ago. ITS OVER.

      • Matt says:

Did he make the Title game in 2000 on a team expected to win no more than 6 games? AS did in 2011. Because that is what matters here

Yes, they exceeded expectations. In 2000 they finished 5-11. They won the superbowl in 2001. That’s a little better than losing the championship game like Alex Smith did.

      • DS94everXev says:

The Pats won the Super Bowl with Tom Brady as the QB. So, if you want to use your comparison, CK at the very least must win the Super Bowl this year. Which is what I expect and you don’t apparently because you don’t expect CK to win a tough game against a good team playing in their home stadium. Something that will almost assuredly be a requirement for this Niners team to reach the Super Bowl.

And the Pats in 2000 didn’t make the AFC Title game. Bledsoe was the QB for the Pats and they went 5-11. With AS and JH in their first year together they went 13-3. Quite a difference there.

Dumping a QB who went 5-11 for you in your first year as HC isn’t such a big deal. Dumping a QB who went 13-3 and the NFC Ttile game for you in your first year as HC is.

Once again, a significant differnce between the two situations (AS vs. Bledsoe).

PS I am plenty old enough to remember what happened then. It was a no-brainer to keep Brady as the QB. CK hasn’t distinguished himself at all like Brady did in 2000. At least not yet. As I’ve said, the next two weeks will determine how good CK is. The past 3 weeks playing sub 0.500 teams and barely beating them and losing to them isn’t a great confidence builder in CK for me.

BS you need therapy. This is a 49ers blog room. You are filling it with negative vibes.
We are a 1st place team headed into the home stretch. We are about to make the playoffs.
We have an exciting new young QB. Get behind it or get out. You are ruining the vibe of the room. Yes you are that guy…..

      • DS94everXev says:

        bay boy

You promised to leave the blog if AS was average.

Guess what? He will finish the year as a 6-2 starter (well above average) and he had just as many TD’s as Eli didwhen he was injured (not average) and his QB rating was among the top 5 when he was injured (not average). His final game he was NFC Offensive Player of the Week and was a nominee in the week he played Buffalo. Again, not average.

        Guess what that means?

        You’re gone!
        :- )

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Find that quote liar….

      • Matt says:

DS you must be having a rough morning. Your venom speaks for itself. I second Bay’s notion. There’s plenty to be excited about. Try to let yourself be happy. Niners have some road tests. I think they go 1-1 and forge into the playoffs with some more answers at every position.

      • DS94everXev says:

        chess boy

You said Bledsoe and AS are similar. They are not at all. How they were benched, the events leading up to it, the personal relationships between them and their HC’s are not at all all similar.

The records each put up are on the opposite spectrum. And agreeing with bay only proves you to be a hater. I don’t care what you think of me. In case you didn’t notice you don’t much matter to me. Neither does bay.

      • DS94everXev says:

        PS Chess boy

Your comments on concussions were full of crap.

    • old coach says:

Brotha no matter how poorly a player performs harbaugh defends them publicly and i thinks he expects the same as he gives

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        Sounds reasonable to me.

      • 55Niner says:

If that’s the case, JH is gonna get a bad rep among the players in NFL…c’mon, going out of your way to openly praise a player, then bench him after an injury? What kind of credilbility does that give you among perspective FA’s in the league? I don’t care who the player is, if the HC believes that the change was immenent and the injury accellerated the change, then ‘fess up…otherwise, be prepared to suffer the wrath when it comes time to sign FA’s. Nobody appreciates smoke blown up their ass, especially a pro athlete…

      • Matt says:

Um, I hate to poit out the obvious falacies here, but Bill Belicheck has done a fine job doing exactly what Harbaugh has done.
It was an injured Drew Brees that didn’t get his job back from Brady when he got healthy. It was the same Belichick who praised Moss then cut him. Praised Branch, cut.
At the end of the day, the players know this is a business. It’s very simple to see. If you buy into Harbaugh’s system and you don’t fit, he takes care of you. If you run your mouth he destroys your future.

      • DS94everXev says:

Ummm…Mr. Chess…Brees wasn’t on the Pats with Brady. Never started there. He was a Charger. Got hurt and Rivers replaced him.

The Pats had Drew Bledsoe. An older veteran QB. Completely different scenario than dumping Brees. And VERY different from our situation. Bledsoe wasn’t 19-5 AFC Title game the year proior, and his injury took him out for a long time. AS was out only 2 weeks tops.

      • 55Niner says:

        @Matt
Aside from your misconception about Drew Brees, I agree that the players know it’s a business. But, I also believe that in today’s world, and with today’s athlete that has gotten his ass kissed since he was in high school, I think my point is valid and that some FA’s will be leary about coming here.

      • Matt says:

It’s obviously too early for my memory to kick in. I meant Drew Bledsoe not Drew Brees. My mistake.

      • DS94everXev says:

        55Niner

This will remain an issue as long as JH is here. You won’t hear that FAx didn’t come here because of it, but it will be a big reason. It will be the undiscussed reason.

And if JH says you are a Pro-Bowl player, you can’t think you’re safe. That doesn’t sit well. If your boss told you that you are the best or among the best, then you go on a leave of some kind (sick, taking care of a family member, etc.) come back and find out you don’t have a job, you’d be ticked off. Business or not. You’d be mad and that business won’t be seen in a good light.

      • Matt says:

DS unfortunately you’re mistaken about the similarities between Smith and Bledsoe. Perhaps it was before your time. I’m not going to list all of the Alex Smith attributes because they are so well known here. Instead here are Drew Bledsoe’s stats:
Drew Bledsoe was the number one pick in the 1993 draft for New England. He started his rookied year. He only won 5 games that first year.

In 2001, Drew Bledsoe signed a 10 year $103 million dollar contract. He was then injured in the second game. Tom Brady took over. Though healthy, Drew only played in three more games in 2001 and only because Tom Brady got hurt. The following year, he was traded to the Bills.

He had his best year of his career his second year with the Bills, but was still traded away to Dallas for a younger QB at the end of the 2004 season.

He ended his career 5th in attempts and completions, 7th in passing yards, and 13th in TDs. He is very similar to Alex Smith except he had even more success than Smith.

Is it any coincidence that Robert Kraft and Jed York are good friends? Jed York has said for years that he is trying to model his organization after the oen Robert Kraft created in NE. Comparing Bledsoe to Smith is a very relevant argument.

      • Matt says:

P.S. DS- Drew Bledsoe WON the championship game in 2001 before he was traded the next year. That was his 8th year in the league. He also was a 4 time pro bowler.
$103 million dollar contract and traded the next year. WOW.

      • Jack Hammer says:

“…some FA’s will be leary about coming here.”

Is that really a huge deal? Name one big name FA that Baalke and Harbaugh have signed since joining. They are building this team primarily through the draft, and picking up 2nd tier FA’s.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        @ Jack,
you are absolutely correct. We haven’t gone out and aggressively pursued free agents. Well except for Manning.
Know one thing, if we did go after the big free agent and paid through the nose for him, he’s be starting.
The free agents that might not want to come here are the middle to lower tier guys. Unless they get paid.
Brandon Jacobs doesn’t realize he made a huge mistake coming here in the first place. He should kick his agents ass. Looking at the situation here was he really going to get any carries anyway? He was going to be a 2-3 carry per game guy anyway. We have Gore and Hunter and La Michael. If he thought he was going to be any higher than third on the depth chart, then someone blew smoke up his ass.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Ok Jack

Our drafted players will see how JH has treated AS who was also drafted by us and not be quite so excited to resign here. Same result either way.
That feeling we had last year is gone with this move. No way are we the most unified complete team now.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        BS,
AS made roughly $50 million playing for us. Enough to pay for therapy if his feelings are hurt.
Send him a letter letting him know how you feel. Maybe he’ll pay for your therapy too.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Bay boy

Is it lonely? Your life I mean. Always tagging after me. Wanting to feel like you are a part of something, even if you are despised? Nobody to love. The meaning of the word escapes you completely. That need to feel a part of something…you keep doing it, so it’s true.

I don’t know who BS is. But I know to come to you to get it.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Feel better now BS? Now on to football. Which of the Patriots receivers do you think will get doubled the most? Hernandez or Welker?
Do you think CR can guard Welker 1 on 1?

I actually think they will double Hernandez and leave Culliver 1 on 1 with Lloyd.

Really important that the Niners are disciplined and don’t go for the pump fakes. Brady is a master at those. So is Brees.

      • Crab15 says:

bay – I’m workin on a road trip to the stick Dec. 30 with a Niner buddy. Are you going to be there?

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Crabs,
I sure will be. Are you coming in that morning or the night before?
Perfect game to meet some of the blog boys. I’d like to walk over and introduce myself to MD too.

      • Crab15 says:

bay -Coming in Sat. afternoon (29th)
Lookin forward to finally meeting some blog chums and tailgaiting with some cold ones!
I’ll keep you posted, Hofer probably won’t go. He called me Jordo last week. :)

  8. htwaits says:

According to Cam Inman, he will not be paid some of his remaining base pay. I’m assuming that by suspending him they keep him away from play off teams with running back problems — NYG for one. It might also free up a roster spot.

  9. Nick says:

I was not in favor of signing him. Afterward, I wanted him cut after the pre-season in favor of a roster spot that could have gone to Chris Owusu or somebody else. Now, I’m not surprised either. LMJ and Dixon getting more carries isn’t a bad thing.

    • barleyfreak says:

Is it just me, or do our WRs not scare anyone? Even with Williams. Crabs has great hands and is tough after the catch. Moss is 1/2 decoy. Mario is good, he’s a gamer, but they don’t send him deep much. Who scares the opponent deep? Ginn? Ha! Davis? Well, he can but he stays into block a lot, and he’s a TE anyway. Until we get someone with a legit deep threat, our passing game will be ancillary to the running game.

      • DS94everXev says:

Did you notice that in the first half while MC tore up Miami we didn’t get much in the way of points off of it?

  10. old coach says:

No loss not only did LMJ look good yesterday but Dixon has been looking better no dancing running decisively

    • Josh says:

No offense to Dixon, but I don’t think he’s got cognitive ability to lose if he just takes all the hits on the head from here until he retires. Dude looked good playing balls-out, like that dive. For such a crazy guy, I’d expect more lunatic play like that on the field.

  11. MidWestNiner says:

Grant, does this mean Jacobs isn’t eligible for a Super Bowl ring if the Niners win it all?

  12. Mike in SF #2 says:

Players must be on a NFL roster the final game of the season to be eligible for the Playoffs. Its obvious they didn’t want him going to GB or NY who both could use him right now. Smart move. I called this yesterday saying they should suspend him and prevent him from going somewhere else.

  13. fesnyc says:

NYG fans always ripped Jacobs for being hesitant as a runner, not using his big body, being a poor short yardage back, and a prima donna. when we signed him near the end of his career, i was surprised. he’s Dixon, but with a poor attitude, and much older. not surprised by this outcome.

    • Brotha Tuna says:

And we were worried about Moss’ attitude! LOL

      • msclemons67 says:

I have to be honest Brotha, I was more worried about “I play when I wanna play” Moss than I was about the Tip-Toe Burglar.

From what LMJ said today Moss has actually been a positive influence in the huddle.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        @ Clem
Randy seems to have been positive from Day#1; a real professional. I don’t know if he’ll be back, but its been a good one year deal so far.

  14. La-La Land says:

The only good thing about Jacobs coming here was that it lit a fire under Booby’s butt. His “I believe I can fly” jump got us closer to the goal. He must believe he should be the power runner. Finally.

And Jacobs shouldn’t even be in the same locker room as King Gore.

  15. MontanaMan16 says:

Just read this on pro football weekly! Maybe someone already posted something on this! Thought I would post it since Jacobs ain’t worth talking about!

    • Even though 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman caught a fair amount of flak for QB Colin Kaepernick’s ill-fated option pitch to Ted Ginn that was recovered for a TD by the Rams in St. Louis’ overtime victory in Week 13, we keep hearing Roman’s name mentioned as a possible head-coaching candidate. Some close observers have been wondering out loud whether there might be a team or two interested in a package deal of Roman and QB Alex Smith, whose future with the Niners beyond this season is not looking real bright all of a sudden. “There’s no question he’s got a great offensive mind,” one team insider said of Roman. “But I honestly have no idea if he knows how to handle a defense.”

Just rumor but an interesting possibility!

    • msclemons67 says:

I could see Roman getting a HC offer next year. The 49ers offense isn’t exiting but it is certainly efficient. A team like the Jaguars would love to have an upgrade to competent.

    • alexsmith4mvp says:

I see Arizona making a play for both. They need a new coach and qb, and getting one from a division opponent only helps.

    • 9ersurf says:

Shouldn’t be worried with any offense that has Alex Smith as their QB.

      • Greg says:

Shouldn’t be worried about any team that takes Roman either. An OC that can’t even diagram a passing play. You have got to be kidding.

  16. SanFranMan says:

I think it’s awesome they suspended him. . We do not need this in the season homestretch. He is a 260 lb. running back that gains 2 yards maybe per carry and that usually falls down when he is armed tackled. I totally questioned his signing during the off season and he’s proved me right.

  17. Mr. Automatic says:

Here’s my timeline of the Jacobs’ drama:

-Brandon Jacobs (BJ) comes back from his preseason knee injury to find he doesn’t have a spot in the RB hierarchy.
-BJ spends more time with the Giants’ team at home than with his own.
-A couple weeks later, BJ starts whining on social media.
-Coach has “the talk” with BJ.
-BJ tows the company line for a week and is allowed to suit up for a game in Kendall’s absence.
-BJ is predictably crappy in relief (4att, 6yds).
-BJ is informed/hinted at that his spot for the next game will go to the rookie, LMJ.
-BJ revolts, releases his inner drama queen and gets all nostalgic on social media.
-LMJ performs well in KH’s and BJ’s absence.
-Coach drops the hammer in the most effective way possible by suspending BJ making him lose out on game-day checks and making sure he’s completely neutered come playoff time.

Start working on your golf swing, Mr. Jacobs. Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out.

    • LSX says:

Yep, that pretty much sums it up.

Jacobs is trash and I’m glad to see him suspended. He was tremendously overrated his entire career, obviously wasn’t a team player, and all he does is whine. He never bought in to the 49er Way, so screw him. Good riddance. We don’t need him anyway; James is already twice the talent Jacobs has ever been.

    • BOS49er says:

He was a failed experiment in the .BEdwards mold. I like JH taking a low risk/high reward flyer on a player every year. if it works out great, if not see u later without much detriment to the team. I was kind of on his side early (when i still thought he could play) but his 2 yards and a ton of bitching isnt what we need and there are able backups around to take his spot.
Mr Jacobs is a 32 yr old RB who is 260 has a reputation for runing soft and having a terrible attitude in the lockeroom. GOOD LUCK ON THE FREE AGENT MARKET
Come to think of it, would look snazzy in Silver and Black

  18. jsand3030 says:

On a suspension side note, has anyone heard anything on Sherman’s appeal to his suspension? Part of me wants him to play when we go to Seattle but I wont be too upset if he gets suspended.

    • alexsmith4mvp says:

yesterday, adam scheffter said the appeal could be postponed even further than the original date

  19. dangle says:

Has anyone asked Pete Carrol “Whats your deal man?”

  20. Razoreater says:

Word on the street has it that Coughlin sent Jacobs to Harbaugh pretending to be disgruntled with Coughlin and the Giant organization, and wanted to work for a real coach. His mission was to learn the playbook, become a cancer so they release him, Giants pick him up and gain the information legally.

  21. SleepMode says:

Didn’t Jacobs also say something to the effect of he wish he’d been able to stay in New York, after the Niners signed him? Not a good way to start off with your new team.
