49ers Week 15 grades: Kaepernick

FOXBORO, Ma. – The 49ers beat the Patriots 41-34 and clinched a playoff berth. Here is the grade for Colin Kaepernick.

Colin Kaepernick: A-. He outplayed Tom Brady in Foxboro in the freezing rain. Kaepernick threw four touchdown passes, one a rocket to Michael Crabtree between three defenders. Kaepernick averaged 8.6 yards per attempt and his QB rating was 107.7.

He fumbled four times, but his only turnover was an interception in the end zone.

Kaepernick’s errors were troubling, but they didn’t hurt the 49ers in this game. He was the 49ers most valuable player.

Whatever was happening under center need to be fixed asap. Four fumbles is simply unacceptable and we were incredibly lucky to recover all of them. Other than that a fine performance by Kaepernick. Receivers were getting wide open but he still did a great job locating them and getting them the ball.

  2. Hov says:

B+ would be my grade missed vd twice, bad snaps but overall got the win vs a great team in the pats go 9ers!

    • chris says:

B+ ? He owned the Patriots who were 18-0 in December and have a home record of 72-14 over the last six years. Maybe you forget that once again Akers blew a chip shot field goal for him, he took shots Alex Smith hasn’t taken in 7 years and all in the rain.
The hall of fame QB playing opposite of him struggled mightily in the same rainy conditions and our second year player who has only started 5 games owned the 8th ranked D in the league on the road.
Kaepernick didn’t get the same benefit of calls that Brady got.
We left about 17 points on the field. B+ ? Not at all

    • ninermd says:

Missed VD? That ball should have been caught for 6. VD is my dude but that td was on him.

      • AngusinCanada says:

Gotta disagree. He was wide open, but Kaep overthrew him. He was running all-out, and couldn’t get there. That one was on Kaep.

      • Adam says:

Yeah, I agreed with Collinsworth on that one, CK needed some air under the ball. He tends to rifle everything. Not a big deal, no QB is perfect and he just needs more reps. It’s like everything else in life, practice makes perfect.

      • Atl9er says:

I think it was a catchable ball. I notice that VD doesnt extend or try to catch the ball unless its in a spot where he can jump into the catch. I think it was a catchable ball if more effort by VD, however more air would have made it less difficult.

    • Dee Phiant says:

B+ is right. I thought I was watching a High School game with all those fumbles! And that last pass to Crab was underthrown, Crab made a hell of a play out of that! Several passes in the first half were overthrown and would have made the difference whether Kap is a keeper or a flash in the pan. He looks a little too tight wound to me, but it is a W, not a dominant W but a W!

    • sfarnell says:

VD short armed one of those throws…seems he kind of gave up on it. That should have been a touchdown.

    • dangle says:

All great QBs miss throws, especially deep throws. Brady missed a lot of short throws last night. CK missed some deep passes. Drew Brees over throws wide open receivers. These things happen. No need to nit-pick

  3. thegrudge says:

He gets an A+, he outplayed Brady(HOF) in Brady’s backyard, period!
The kid throws a hell of a ball, bet those balls were dry when the receivers were catching them, he’s got some heat!! Once he starts getting some touch on it, he will be Top 5 passer in this league for sometime to come. And I am really glad to see him prove the coach right too. I was Smith support(still am) but this team needed a fresh start at QB, you cannot deny the vibe and chemistry he has with his teammates. This was a very impressive win for him and the team.

  4. Dh3 says:

A+ he’s the future of the 49ers…thank god we now have a quarterback… we don’t win this game without him… who cares about the mistakes like grant said it didn’t hurt us…Harbaugh knew what he was doing all along we should have never doubted him

  5. BOS9er says:

B+ the 4 fumbles and the pick were troubling. but the 4 tds and the overall play more than made up for it. it looked like he missed VD deep twice but il have to see the play againto be sure. what was up with that qb sneak? but i dont want to just nitpick. The pass to RM was beautiful, He came out slinging and was on point for the most part. looked comfy in the pocket Huge step forward for him and the 0 feel Much more confident vs the Hawks next week. D in the 3rd and early 4th quarter scared me a bit but the came together when it counted, great win, Go CK ur here to stay it looks like and while we r at it might win one this year so its alll goood

    • chris says:

The QB sneak on fourth and inches was a mistake by the center. The center was in such a hurry to get low that the snap was off. The announcers actually went over that during the game and agreed it was the center who made the mistake there.

    • Ed from AZ says:

Will SEA defense be a stiffer test against the SF Offense? We’ll see, but like Whitner said: ” After a win like this, we feel that we can go anywhere and win.”

  6. KezarMike says:

Kaep has started five games in his career, outplayed Drew Brees in the Superdome and outplayed Tom Brady in New England. Pretty good start, wouldn’t you say? He is a terrific young QB and will only get better. Besides his obvious physical skills, he is smart and cool under pressure. Lots of great young QBs in the league: Luck, Griffin, Newton, Wilson, Dalton … and it’s good to know that we have a great young one too, and I don’t yet that he’s going to come in second to anybody.

  7. 23jordan/ says:

THAT’S my QB. 4 TDs to beat Brady in December A++++++++++.

    • chris says:

Notice how he silenced the Smithers? They are all working on how to discredit this phenominal performance and probably won’t be on until tomorrow to bash Kaepernick for missing Vernon Davis (who was hit at the line as the ball was released which caused the miss by one step).
Instead they will point to 4 fumbled snaps in a game where the slick ball was on the ground 2 times by the same back for NE and again fumbled by Delainie Walker and Hernandez who made the same mistake as Walker.
Even the announcers gave the Center Goodwin credit for the fumbled snap on 4th and inches. But the Smithers will be here bashing the kid who has gone on the road to beat 2 HOF QBs in their houses and wasn’t gifted any plays.
This game made it pretty apparent that this is huge upside to Kaepernick and why Harbaugh made the decision he did.

      • Nick says:

The biggest Smither of all – Trent Dilfer – was already talking about the fumbled snaps. So you’re spot on. The discreditting has already begun.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Doesnt matter anymore. The game was on prime time. The secret is out.

      • DELienz says:

Now that Kap is our entrenched starter can we shut up about all this “Smither” crap and rout for the team… Makes me angry to see comments like that. Just be Niner fan. Smith is old news as far as I’m concerned at this point

      • drsgrosse says:

Chris: That was a completely moronic post. After that performance by Kaep, YOU brought up Smith and the fumbles.

        Get a clue.

      • chris says:

@ DR have you seen this name before today?
        Fansince 77 says:

He didn’t outplay Brady. Are you crazy? He only threw 25 times for 200 yards. Brady led the team back from 28 down!

Kap played well and made some nice throws, but he made a horrible throw for the INT. Should have had a few others too.

After every game, there is a new screen name trashing Kaepernick. I call it like I see it.

      • DS94everXev says:

        chris

What happened to the chris who didn’t throw insults out? At the very least, do it when somebody is being a dick to you. But your pre-emptive attacks are just pathetic whining after a win. What are you like after a loss? Get a grip. Your negative energy did a pretty good job here of setting a bad mood without help from anybody else.

PS In the future, come in happy if you think your guy did great.

By the way, Steve Young had a rule. As a QB a lot of weird things can happen. You touched the ball last. Bad snaps by the Center or not. It is your job to protect the ball.

      • Dee Phiant says:

Brady didn’t fumble in the slick weather………….

      • AngusinCanada says:

        Chris,
Let it go man, you’re just as bad as anyone who is still suggesting that Smith should be in there over Kaep (which incidentally, I don’t believe is anybody). Some people pointed out the 4 (yes, 4!) fumbled snaps. That’s a problem, and it will get fixed. To point it out is hardly discrediting a great performance.
So I say again, Let. It. Go.

      • sfarnell says:

Yeah, where’s DJ this morning. Probably planning a move to Kansas City or Minnesota.

How many times has AS put up 41 points?

      • Adam says:

“which incidentally, I don’t believe is anybody”

Exactly. There are two or three deranged people at both extremes of the curve that act like Delta Bravos here on this blog that try to make these generalizations and straw man arguments.

It is what it is. And it was a great game by CK. He deserves a ton of credit.

    • Sycophantick Romantick says:

JJ is your QB, but who’s quibbling?

    • hoLLaFront says:

that’s not ur QB…u said kap wasn’t the future…dudes like u disgust me…u bash smith, n now ur on the bandwagon with kap…i support the 9ers thru n thru…i supported the team when erikson was the coach, thru the nolan years and whatnot…we have the right to complain, but u sir, ur nothing more than a fair weather fan…

kap throws a great deep ball, no question…work a lil bit on his touch n boy is going to be a great one, one day…lets support kap to take us to the promise land this year…they haven’t won a super bowl since i was in 7th grade…

happy for kaep… lets get a couple more wins and head to the playoffs…

    • Prime Time says:

Nope Johnson was your QB. I know cause you babbled about it the entire offseason!

  8. 5253 says:

Colin played very well. It’s hard to believe how much poise this kid has, considering he’s only started 5 games. He doesn’t get flustered. He made some great throws tonight. The last TD hookup to MC shows that the offense is capable of bailing out our defense in those rare instances when our D wears down. The QB/Center exchange issues were alarming, but I like the fact that CK held himself 100% accountable for those issues in his post game presser. With that kind of attitude, I have complete faith those issues will get corrected.

I think one day in the not-to-distant future, NFL fans will look back on this year as the dawning of a new crop of excellent QBs (RG3, Luck, Wilson, and CK).

  9. Greg says:

We don’t really know if Kaepernick fumbled four times. It is very hard to tell who is to blame in those situations, but I am betting Goodwin is as much responsible as Kaepernick is. Time for a new center. It would be a miracle if Roman and Harbaugh ever allow Kaepernick to be really unleashed, we might actually win a game easily instead of every game being a nailbiter to the end.

  10. Fansince 77 says:

He didn’t outplay Brady. Are you crazy? He only threw 25 times for 200 yards. Brady led the team back from 28 down!

Kap played well and made some nice throws, but he made a horrible throw for the INT. Should have had a few others too.

    • Hov says:

      Bs is that you? Smh

      • Houston 9er says:

I have to agree. CK didn’t outplay Brady. CK played a nice game but Brady led his team to score 28 points in 1 half against the best D in the league. I’m still excited that we now have a guy who can actually make plays at QB though. The future is bright.

      • chris says:

Brady had 1 td/ 2 ints and threw the ball 65 times. He orchestrated a come back against a prevent defense that played man until the lead was 28 points then dropped to a zone defense.
No different than Cam Newton throwing for 300+ yards in a losing effort. Kaepernick threw for 4 tds and 1 int. The team also left about 17 points on the field.

More Stats: Average gain for passing play- Kaepernick 7.8 Brady 6.2

        Total Plays 49ers 65 Patriots 92

I’ll gladly take 4 tds/1 int to 1 td/ 2 ints and call the first one a better performance 100% of the time. I guess you expect Kaepernick to play defense too. That’s they only other way he could have outplayed Brady.

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

Brady threw 1 TD! 1 !!! And had 2 picks. And missed many open receivers, both high and low.

        CK outplayed him.

    • 5253 says:

Actually, he did outplay Brady, who had 65 pass attempts, 1 TD, 2 picks. Lower YPA, lower passer rating, lower qbr. Most of all, check the scoreboard; we won. Best yet, CK and MC hook up for biggest play of the game when the game was on the line.

    • Msclemons67 says:

      Bitter Smither.

CK7 just put 41 nails in Alex’ coffin.

    • ninermd says:

Should have had 2 more td’s also. Shoulda woulda coulda! He thoroughly outplayed Brady. What game were you watching?

    • drsgrosse says:

QB’s don’t outplay other QB’s. They outplay defenses.

    • Fansince 77 says:

Hey I like CK. He’s the future. He made some nice throws. And some bad ones. Brady was going against the best defense in the league and looked bad for a half. And then brought the team all the way back to tie. Everyone thought that with a lead that big Aldon Smith would get his three sacks. Brady made some amazing throws. The one to Lloyd on the sideline. I watched at a bar with fans 50/50 split for each team and you can feel that momentum. When they got within 14 you can feel that Brady could do no wrong.
Did you ever get that feeling when CK stepped on the field during the big comeback? Um. No.
CK play welled. 4 fumbled snaps is 4 fumbled snaps. And throwing a pick to a Safety playing center field in the end zone is a rookie mistake.
His throw to Crabtree for the TD was low. Crabtree made the play. BUT — CK made the read.
He’s going to be a very good player. Niners are in it for the post season run after this game. The team won. CK is a part of the team and he made his contributions.
This blog sucks because everyone one to name-call Smither this, CK that. Is everyone in high-school?

    • sfarnell says:

That’s what happens when the defense goes into “prevent” in the middle of the third quarter. Until that point, Brady looked like he wanted to cry.

  11. I may have missed the toilet, but Kaep saved the day!!! says:

… Okay this is rediculus Kaepernick gets an A- and everyone else gets sub A games. the offensive line deserved an A at the least for there efforts on doing amazingly well in Pass protection, a known weakness of the 49ers.

    • Msclemons67 says:

The offense should get A’s across the board. 41 points is doing the job.

    • Mr. Automatic says:

A- for the OLine for me. They had a great game but had trouble down the stretch getting their running game going when we needed some first downs and to run the clock out.

  12. highpriest333 says:

Fair grade. But an A- on that test is well above the curve.

  13. Bangkok Niner says:

I think an A rating could only be seen through rosé tinted specs….. But it was a good performance, but the fumbles and the two misses to Vernon Davis make it a B+ at best.

    • Nick says:

VD should have cought one of those passes. He short armed it. I’ve seen worse throws resulting in receptions. VD should take some of the blame.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Nick

Only a CK-only fan says that. The fact you can’t admit CK flat out missed a wide open VD with no pressure just goes to show where your loyalties are. Not with the team. That much is for certain.

You can support CK AND say he threw a horrible pass you know. Missing an open WR like that is by default on the QB. Ask the guy yourself.

But you just keep making Kap-excuses. You’re a bigger man to not admit fault.

      • Nick says:

        DS,

Do you have reading comprehension issues? Sure CK7 missed by over throwing VD. Having said that, VD still could have made that catch. At least, thats what it looked like on the replay.

By the way, how did you come to the conclusion that I’m not a fan of the team? Thats pure genius.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        @ Nick,
ignore “it”. Don’t let “it” spoil our party. We on a roll baby!!!!!!!!

      • Crab15 says:

Nick – Just ignore the negative….Let this person try to bait the rookies in here. Let this person debate with themself. Call it quits on debating with people who are purely negative, I did.
        Great Niner win!! Yea baby!!

      • Matt49erFan831 says:

I saw the replays several times, and although it looks like Kaep slightly overthrew VD, Davis clearly short-armed that pass…if he had fully extended his arms, that’s an easy TD…that one is totally on Vernon…

  14. Sean in Canada says:

Whoa. Great team win and some random thoughts.
All the missed opportunites in the first half were troubling. When you get the ball on the opponents 5 after a turnover, it has to result in a td.
What was Ginn doing out there? If you aren’t catching a punt in the air, GET AWAY FROM IT! Thankfully his mistakes didn’t cost them.
Taking their foot off the gas when it was 31-3 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter was obviously wrong. That may work against the lesser teams but not an offense like the Pats.
Great game by Crabtree, again. He started emerging last year and has continued that play and then some.
Gore is a stud, plain and simple.
Kaep looked unfazed by some miscues. Glad those fumbles didn’t cost them a win. Gotta think the weather played a small part but no excuse. Nice game.
    Get well soon, Justin Smith.
Rodney Harrison, take your biased Patriots analysis elsewhere.

  15. undercenter says:

A- first half, B- second half. Offense in the second half didnt get enough first downs to keep that ball from Brady. Fumbled snaps, one interception, two poorly throwen balls, one of them a near interception in the endzone. Bad weather conditions, on the road, final grade B+.

  16. Chicago49er says:

WOW, The “running QB” had 4 passing tds and out performs MR. Brady to help our team get a w on the road!!! I do not want to hear the term running QB any more from anyone! I am so proud of this kid! CK is still learning and he will improve in this system.

on another note i hope to god Justin Smith is ok! if we lose him our defense will not be the same.

    GO NINERS

  17. Dr.D says:

I really dislike Goodwin’s head move just before he snaps the ball. It gives the timing of the snap away to the defense and I wonder if it was part of the reason for the fumbles (imagine getting steamrolled by Wilfork while snapping the ball)…

  18. Vegas9er says:

I agree with the A- grade. What’s amazing is that we scored 41 points and we still left a lot of points out there on the field! Before the season I didn’t have a lot of confidence in us winning this game if Alex was under center however, once I saw that JH made the switch to Kap for good I felt that we had a puncher’s chance because of Kap’s ability to make big plays.

  19. NinersRoc says:

There’s no way CK7 gets a A, or A-! There FOUR fumbled exchanges (at least two you can blame on him not completing the exchange), there was an interception in the end zone, and there were 2 other missed TD throws, not to mention the other over-thrown balls. But all that being said, it doesn’t mean that he had a terrible game. The truth is the offense squander numerous opportunities in the first half and we should’ve had at least 30pts going into the half. CK7 had a direct hand in all but one of those missed opportunities (Delanie Walker fumble). So the most you could justifiably give him is a B. the great thing is, this kid is busting at the seams with potential and he is looking the one that could a franchise QB!

  20. fesnyc says:

Kaep: A-. 4 Tds passing, a high completion rate, some good third down conversions, versus one INT and a couple of weaker throws. He makes throws Alex wouldnt even try (see Michael Irvins comments on NFL network), and with Kaep at qb Crabtree seems like a completely different player.

Coaches: you cant beat a road win in december against the Pats. the shift to zone looks like a bad call but a key factor is that in the first half the Patriots were a turnover machine, and that had to stop at some point (unless you think the Pats were going to turn the ball over 8-10 times in the game). A-. I think if you grade them below a B you’re missing the forest from the trees: the point in the NFL is to win, and to keep winning.

my big concern is the spreading injury bug. KH & KW are bad enough, but now we’re seeing JS and AS get dinged up. someone wave a magic wand because this has to stop.

Seattle looms as a dangerous game. big letdown possible after a long trip, a and a high profile win. Seattle hits hard and its hostile territory.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Good take. The way I see it, the 49ers gave up a 28- point lead in 11 minutes – a record – and the coaches were directly responsible.

      • bayareafanatic says:

It will be interesting to see how accountable they are for the shift in strategy. If they would have lost the loss would have been on their shoulders.
The only goat players are Akers and Walker.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Grant:

The way I see it, the 49ers gave up a 28- point lead in 11 minutes – a record – and the coaches were directly responsible.

You don’t think the injury to Justin Smith had anything to do with it? You don’t think Bill Belichick and Tom Brady had anything to do with it?

      • bayareafanatic says:

And there is Claude. No thoughts on the game. Immediately picking through someones posts in attempt to discredit.
Claude any fool could see that the coaching staff defensively and offensively shifted strategies that impacted the game.
On another note, forgot one more goat. Ted Ginn has got to go.

      • claude balls says:

        @bay:

        Smh.

Anyone with the reading comprehension of a fifth grader would understand my comment to express the following thought on the game, namely, that Smith’s injury, Belichick’s adjustments and Tom Brady’s improved performance had something to do with the Patriots’ comeback. Does everything have to be explained to you using simple See-Spot-run sentences?

Nor does suggesting that those things played a part in the Patriots’ comeback constitute a statement that the 49ers’ coaching decisions in the second half had no impact on the game. Not everything occurrence can be explained by a single factor. Life is usually more complicated than that. Most of the time, multiple factors contribute to a result. How is it that you are incapable of recognizing that?

Moreover, how does raising the possibility that that there were factors beyond the 49ers’ coaching decisions at play in the comeback = an attempt to “discredit” anyone?

Finally, I have to ask, “what the Hell is wrong with you?” Last night, the 49ers did something that hasn’t been done by anyone in 10 years – beat New England in Foxboro in December. And the game was epic. Moreover, the 49ers withstood the Patriots’ (a very good team, by the way) comeback and, stood up and did what was necessary to win a game that virtually no one said they could win. Their resilience was encouraging. With that win (can we call it a gutcheck win?) last night, the 49ers’ playoff prospects look very bright. 49ers fans should be deliriously happy.

But not you. You’re on here looking for fights, talking about accountability and telling everyone which players need to go. Why can’t you just enjoy the win? You pulled the same crap all last year, and it was more than a little annoying.

      • rocket says:

There’s never a single reason for a letdown like the Niner defense had last night. There were actually a few of them:

The Patriots run so many plays in a short time that they can dink and dunk for 4-7 yards at a time and still score quickly.

Losing JS was huge not just because of the impact he has, but because it affects how the oline then plays Aldon. Huge loss and it was no coincidence that the pass rush disappeared for awhile without him.

A terrible pass interference call on TBrown that handed the Pats a TD.

The offense getting nothing going while the Patriots were mounting their comeback. If they string a few 1st downs together, the comeback doesn’t happen. With the offense going 3 and out so many times in succession it allowed the Patriots to wear out the Niner D with their tempo. The offense plays a huge part in this but to their credit came back with the go ahead points to make up for it when needed.

The shift to a soft zone was an obvious culprit, but there aren’t many Coaches in this league that wouldn’t have done the same thing with a lead of that magnitude half way through the 3rd quarter. The problem is this NE offense is so high tempo they run about 20 more plays than every other offense in the league and the Niners got burned because of it. Hopefully a lesson learned that they take with them for the future.

At the end of the day they won, and to get back on topic, Kap was unflappable and played about as well as you could expect in such a tough enviornment. Fumbled snaps, overthrows, int whatever. The bottomline is he took the Patriots best shot and delivered a knockout of his own. He proved he can deliver on a big stage against a great team and for that he should be lauded, not picked apart for mistakes.

This Smith/Kap debate was ridiculous before, now it’s bordering on sublime. It’s about winning a SB, not who plays QB while doing it. Kap is growing and playing well and most importantly the team is winning. All of you need to get over this petty garbage over who you support at QB and jump on board the SB train. This is a monumental win for this team and could be the beginning of a great run towards a Championship.

      • Grant Cohn says:

Of course it wasn’t the only reason, but it was the biggest.

The p.i. on Brown was a makeup call for Whitner’s hit on Welker. That pass was catchable if Whitner hadn’t hit him.

The calls evened out. The injuries evened out, too. The Patriots didn’t have Gronkowski, Edelman or Stallworth. Then they lost Dennard, who is bad, and had to replace him with Arrington, who is the worst CB in the NFL.

      • rocket says:

        Grant,

The biggest perhaps, but it took all of the ones I listed for the Patriots to mount the comeback along with the obvious fact that they are pretty good.

Every week Kaepernick starts, this blog gets 10 new names trashing him pointing out any thing they can to discredit a win. By reading some of these comments, you’d think SF lost.
I can’t believe there are any negative comments at all. Kaepernick isn’t Jesus Christ. He is going to make mistakes. The difference between him and Smith, Kaepernick wins games with his arm and legs. 12 tds in 5 games. 5 running and 7 passing.

    • Fansince 77 says:

Just because someone has a different opinion or view of the game and CK doesn’t meant they don’t like him or want him to fail or is a Smither.

It’s high risk high reward with the switch.

I’m a Manningite. How’s that? I was hoping the Niners got Payton last year.

    • Ed from AZ says:

I support whoever is starting, but I’m glad you see how it felt coming from the Anti-Smiths when Smith was winning games…

    • Adam says:

Chris, you clearly haven’t been here long. You didn’t see the Haters all over Smith. All the made up accounts that popped up, etc.

There are delusional people at both ends on this that have and will continue to try to tear down the starting QB with any kind of manufactured nutty argument they can come with. It’s not even grounded in reality anymore, it’s because there are some huge egos on both side that feel that they have to be proven right. Has very little to do with football, they need the pat on the backs and are starving for attention.

And now… we will see the roles reversed. Yesterday’s lunatics are now self-proclaimed geniuses and vice versa. Extremists are always nuts, regardless of what side they’re on.

Always an interesting sociology study on this blog. :P

      • bayareafanatic says:

Except one thing Adam. And I’ll use myself as an example. I NEVER criticized the organization. I was critical of one player. And when that one player had a good game I praised him.
What you have now are a dwindling bunch who had a fanatic crush on one player and they are bitter. So bitter that they don’t praise the play of the current QB. So bitter that they attack the coach and his decision to go with the new guy.
The level of hate is on another level and more wide spread.
So no Adam, it is not the same thing.

Bay, Its amazing that none of them have been on here. I expected them to finding fault in CK7′s play last night. I was almost sure that the “AS wouldn’t have fumbled” or “AS wouldn’t have thrown interceptions,” would come into play. This was the game some of them were pointing to as the final test for CK so their silence speaks volumes

      • Prime Time says:

Final test? No final test will be getting past the NFC Championship game. Lets not get too excited and crowning anyone for achieving the goal set before the year. Super Bowl or bust!

      • jsand3030 says:

I never said this was his final test. But I guess you though I was talking to you because maybe you made a similar comment last week? Anyway, CK has proven that he can win in hostel environments with last nights game and in New Orleans. Its easy to say SB or bust but this shouldn’t be CK’s barometer. I feel like we have the team to get us to the SB so lets hope CK keeps playing the way he has been. (minus the fumbles). Ill attribute the fumbles to rain, cold hands and bad communication since its the first time we’ve seen it.

      • Crab15 says:

Pime – Agree, Super Bowl or bust but it was crystal clear that Kap passed a big test in Foxborough!

        Jed York,
this team is ready to win now. This defense is ready to win now. I was all set to buy my tickets. Looking at PSL’s. Excited about the new stadium. And then you went and rolled Alex Smith out again.

I just don’t understand. But what I do understand is I will continue to go with my friend who owns tickets, but I will not be buying them…..

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Wow Claude,
I must have really struck a nerve with you. To get you to dig and dig through old posts to find that.

See here is the difference Claude. I never put Jed up on any pedestal. He is a young guy that had no experience and was handed a job.

Thank god he brought his uncle in for mentoring. So did I take a dig at him? Yep. Especially after the famous Eddie ” he’s gone” quote.

Now Harbaugh is a different story. I have mad respect for Harbaugh. I can’t recall ever ripping on Harbaugh for staying with Smith. And how could I. Ultimately he is the one that chose to find his replacement and make the switch. That took balls.

      • Crab15 says:

jsand – OMG….He frickin ducked it! Lol……I didn’t remember that one.

        @ bay:

Yes, liars and hypocrites tend to annoy me. You should know that by now. That said, it took less than 5 minutes to find that comment. There’s a lot of your nonsense out there.

I see your pathological need to spew b/s continues with your latest comment. First, you didn’t claim that you never criticized Harbaugh, you claimed that you “NEVER criticized the organization.”

Second, although your March 28 criticism was addressed to Jed York, did you really believe that it was Jed York’s unilateral decision to re-sign Alex Smith? Did you really believe he made that decision over the objection of Harbaugh? Of course you didn’t. Even you aren’t that foolish.

The fact is, you are exactly as Adam described you.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Claude,
I’ll end this now. I’m a 49er fan. I’m fired up that my team is in the playoffs for the 2nd time in 10 years.

I am excited that we have good competent coaches, a solid defense and a roster loaded with talent.

And I am glad that we seem to have found a franchise QB that was hand picked by a QB guru.

Pick through that if you want. I’m sure you will find something.

      • rocket says:

        Bay,

Didn’t you say you were going to find a new team if Smith remained the starter or something to that effect?

If we’re being honest then let’s just call it like it is: there are overzealous views from both sides of the ledger. Alex Smith was never as bad as you or Jordan made him out to be and he was never the top shelf player the so called Smithers appointed him as either. It’s too extreme points of view where the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Now the roles are reversed with the defenders becoming the prosecutors and the prosecutors becoming the defenders, but the truth still lies there in the middle.

Kap is playing well, but so was Smith. This team wins because all 3 phases contribute or they don’t win. Simple as that. It’s been that way since Harbaugh was hired and remains so. Kap deserves our support, just like Smith did but it’s about the team; not the individual.

      • jsand3030 says:

Rocket, I disagree. Kap is in there specifically so they dont have to rely on “team” game wins in certain situations. Kap is in there for his big play possibilities that he has shown he can make with his arm and legs that Smith can never make. Smith was good but Kap has the potential to be great. Thats why hes in there.

      • claude balls says:

        @ bay:

Why would anyone object to that comment?

      • rocket says:

        jsand3030,

The problem with your assertion is that it hasn’t materialized. Kap offers big plays but he’s also been inconsistent and ultimately the team is winning the same way they did with Smith: with all 3 phases playing a role. Last night was no exception. The good thing is Kap is getting valuable experience and winning. Nothing wrong with that.

      • jsand3030 says:

        Rocket,

Why do think Harbaugh replaced Smith then? This team is a complete team, and yes, wins as a team but that shouldn’t take away from CK being a more dynamic QB that has the potential to put the team on his back. Not so sure they would have won last nights game with Smith. No way he throws some of those passes that CK threw, down field and get them there in pouring frozen rain. Ive seen 50 yard TD runs materialize and 3rd down conversions get better, 4 TDs yesterday, and average yard per play get better.

      • jsand3030 says:

Theres no problem with my assertion Rocket, just because it hasn’t happened yet.

      • rocket says:

        jsand3030,

This assertion has not materialized yet:

Rocket, I disagree. Kap is in there specifically so they dont have to rely on “team” game wins in certain situations.

They have won the same way with Kap as they have in the past with Smith. Kap is playing because Harbaugh believes he gives them the best chance to win. It doesn’t mean he’s been winning games for them. He’s playing very well and I’m encouraged but they are still playing tight games and winning with defense for the most part. Hopefully Kap keeps getting better and does develop the ability to win a game where the other facets are clicking but he’s not there yet.

      • jsand3030 says:

Like I said, he has the “potential” to put the team on his shoulders.. This team is good so he hasn’t had a chance yet.

He made mistakes but take into account his throws last night in the wind, rain and cold on the road in Foxboro, he was pretty spectacular.

      • rocket says:

He threw the ball very well in the lousy conditions last night. He’s also played very well and has kept the mistakes to a minimum. I like the progress but he’s not at the savior of the offense level yet. Give it time.

      • jsand3030 says:

No he’s not the savior yet but I like the glimpses of what we might get..

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Rocket,

You’re not as football savvy as you think you are if you don’t see the difference between Kap and the other guy who sits the bench now. Smith was horrible before Harbaugh got here. Smith also will be horrible when he leaves. he will forced to make plays for his new team. Something he said himself that he doesn’t like to be forced to do.
Smith was always what I said he was. he does not have “IT”. He has no pocket presence. He can’t throw the deep ball. He has less than average arm strength. He can’t throw into tight windows. He can’t hit receivers in stride. That’s just some of the issues with Alex Smith. Jim Harbaugh finally realized all of this as well. So you can dress him up if you want to. he has warts and I told you all that he couldn’t win a Super Bowl with this team or any team and he won’t because he is not good enough. I’m thankful that he is no longer our QB. I could care less what you fools think about Smith. He is what I said he was and ” He Gone!”

Had he lost this game he would have faced huge scrutiny all week from the media. And yes it would have been on him.

      • claude balls says:

        @ bay:

        Wow. Where to begin?

        1. BOS’s comment has nothing to do with today’s discussion regarding Harbaugh’s in-game strategy. He was commenting on our exchange from yesterday in which you claimed you had NEVER criticized the organization for starting Alex Smith, and I showed you that you had indeed done so. As a result, his comment is in the appropriate place. Given that he knew that and you didn’t, you apparently aren’t as smart as a “monkey with a music box.” The irony is particularly humorous. Next time, you should attack BOS by writing “Your a moron.”

        2. BOS is an independent actor; he doesn’t take orders from me. And he’s certainly no monkey. Take his comment as a neutral third party telling you that you got caught in yet another fabrication. Btw, what’s with the constant attempts to dehumanize, emasculate, etc. those who dare to disagree with you? Don’t you think your opinions/arguments are sound enough to stand on their own?

        3. Yesterday, you proclaimed: I am excited that we have good competent coaches, a solid defense and a roster loaded with talent. Today, you can’t stop second-guessing Harbaugh and Fangio in nearly hysterical fashion. Make up your mind.

        October 25, 2012 at 12:52 pm

        Rib,
I am holding to that bet. Beginning next year if AS is the starting QB I’m gone. Grant can have his blog filled up by the entire band of Village people that pine for AS.
But I promise you I will be gone.

So if the team had decided to stay with the QB they’d been winning games with at an .800 clip, had us the door of the SB, you were going to bail. You are either a “fan” or a blathering idiot. How about telling us which one?

      • ribico says:

BOS, If he were smart, he’d quietly refrain from ever using “I never said…” in a posting again. Just take your lumps, bay. The team is continuing the go in the right direction, they even saved you from your vow, and you are still pissing and moaning?

Hey BOS, what a game huh???? How’d it look from where you were? I never had a doubt. How long did it take to get out of the parking for you?

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Clod,
I’m glad you found this place in the blog world where you can feed two needs.
First and foremost to feed your need to debate, attack and attempt to discredit. I know you miss doing it.

Second, to be able to throw out your second hand knowledge and opinions of football.

Seriously Clod when I said I never criticized this organization it is absolute semantics. There is only one person that I’ve been ultra critical of and everyone here knows it. AS.

And yes I posted that if AS was still the QB here next year I would stop posting. So what. That’s my personal choice. And guess what Claude, HE”S GONE. So the coaching staff agreed with MY stance that AS was not good enough.
As for me criticizing Harbaugh, let me start by saying I love that JH is our coach. Love his fire. BUT THIS IS A FOOTBALL BLOG CLOD. JH is not perfect. HE lost the Rams game. HE almost lost the Pats game. WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO TALK ABOUT THIS CLOD?
Are you this controlling at home? You must be a load of fun to be around. I bet when you retired the person you came home to panicked because your retirement meant that had to automatically spend more time with you.

So should I now begin following each and ever post of yours labeling you as a guy that doesn’t know $hit about football because you blindly defended a QB that couldn’t produce yardage or scores to satisfy his coaches? I mean you like to label me as a guy that post information that is less than factual. Lets turn that around on you.
        1. You post football comments and personal opinions what maybe 20% of the time? Spending 80% of your quotes coming at others, picking through other posts, cutting and pasting through others posts in attempts to discredit. Like some old professor that misses tearing one of your students papers apart to make yourself feel smart.
        2. You engage in debate and even when it’s clear that your argument doesn’t hold, you don’t admit defeat or even attempt to meet in the middle.
        3. You’ve sided and dialoged with the two biggest enigmas on this site on so many occasions. No need to name them.

This is a football blog Claude. People are going to have opinions. Unless I am posting incorrect numbers or made up stats, why don’t you stfu and try having an opinion of your own for once…..

It was awesome, i thought i was at the stick east there were so many 9ers fans there. In my section we even got a “lets go 9ers” chant going for a while. Not gonna lie, after the first 3 and out when the score was 31-10 and the pats were about to get the ball back I told my buddy “here comes 20 min of Prevent” and was horrified to find out I was right. Luckily by that time half the fans left and we were able to get to the good seats and enjoy from there. If it wasnt for the damn rain it would have been perfect football weather. I hate Foxborough’s set up 70 000 fans 1 road in and out i didnt get out of the lot til 2 but rt 1 was just as bad, gotta say tho that listening to the postgame show whining “If denard hadnt gotten hurt pats win that game……hahaha yeah right” made the time fly by

  22. ninermd says:

Perfect grade. I don’t know what everyone was watching that keep saying he missed VD twice, but the bomb to the end zone was squarely on Davis. He has to make that catch. The score could of and should of been in the 50′s.
excellent game by this kid. The fumbled snaps were a concern, but Didnt hurt the team. Like the two other td’s that were dropped didn’t hurt neither do these bad exchanges.

WR’s also get an A. MC has become the best receiver on the team by far. Moss showed up finally.

O-line get an A+ last tonight. The unsung heroes of the night. Fabulous job.

RB a B+ not a big game but kept the offense balanced.

Defense and I’m grading them as a whole A+…. And I’ll tell you why: they went with the game plan and absolutely shut down the baddest offense in the game. When the offense was putting up td’s the COACHES started calling the soft zones and prevent defense. They were playing what they were instructed to do.

Which brings me to coaching. I have to say this was the most disappointed I’ve been with Harbaugh since he got here. To play it safe on both sides of the ball almost cost them the SEASON! If they had lost that game it would have crushed any confidence they had. Harbaugh was playing with fire and got bailed out by Lamichael, CK and MC. And the defense. Going conservative and putting it on the kicker who couldnt make a 30 yard fg if his life depended on it was sickening to watch. The coaching gets a C IMO

Special teams were rock solid and I think they get a B. it would be an A if Akers weren’t on the team.

Almost a total letdown but when they had to the O and D stepped up and finished the job. With NO momentum in their favor. HUGE win and I’d take it any day of the week. Would have liked a complete blowout, but in that big of a game to walk away with even a 3-0 victory is huge.
Very proud of this team. Now lets smack some craphawks!!!!

  23. woody says:

I can’t see marking down CK for some of the missed passes. One of the downsides of a more aggressive passer is more risk, more misses. You take shots and with that comes the good and bad. So you get an interception in the end zone, well that happens when you throw the ball from your 35 to the end zone sometimes. But you also get 4 TD passes for the first time in 10 years.
But the interception was a bad read by CK, and I can’t give him rope because it’s his 5th start, the fact is this is a Superbowl capable team, and JH put him in there when the team was winning and in first place. So CK has to be measured based simply on how he performs, no handicapping because he’s still learning.
So all in all an excellent win, a very good performance by CK and hopefully he’s better next week because I think Seattle’s defense is going to be much tougher than NE.

  24. Fourth & Alex says:

“He’s been poised throughout games. Nothing seems to rattle him. He’s been able to just play his game. Even last week against Miami, (with the) game on the line, important drive, and he keeps it and runs down the sideline for a touchdown. We knew we weren’t going to really rattle him or get him out of the game. We knew that he was a tough player.”

    Defensive Back Devin McCourty

  25. drsgrosse says:

Starting with their 2001 superbowl season, the Pats were 25-1 in home regular season games in Dec/Jan. They were due to lose.

Seattle has tied a league record by scoring 50 pts in back to back games. They are due to be held to next to nothing.

The Niners haven’t won a Superbowl in 17 seasons. They’re due to win one.

  26. james says:

There are too many extreme views going around. People have fallen in love with CK and they have a history of frustration against Smith. The result? Blind over the top euphoria about what was a mostly good, but also quite worrying performance by an inexperienced QB. I like CK and I think he’s done enough to justify his position now, but I saw 4 fumbles (three of which were on him), another near fumble handing the ball off, a really stupid unnecessary interception at a point when we were in, control and should have kept the patriots down, and a few awful passes in the red zone – one of which should have been picked off by the diving corner. I also saw some mesmerizing plays by CK which had be purring, and his arm is incredible, but he was certainly lucky on more than one occasion. Will his luck last? These things tend to even out of the season, and his oscillating performances (going from extreme brilliance to head scratching mistakes) could easily cost us in the playoffs. I’m not a smither – I said CK should be starting – but please stop pretending he’s flawless and a miracle worker. A- is well over the top. I say B is fairer. What I see is a raw QB with huge upside who could go on to be brilliant – or alternatively become the new Mike Vick. Let’s just see what happens …

    • chris says:

While I don’t agree with your opinion, I do respect that you took the time to write out how you came to that conclusion.

I do agree that Kaepernick can certainly get better in a lot of areas. I was surprised they didn’t let Kaepernick run more. I think moving forward, he’s got great upside. Even if they don’t win the Super bowl, I agree with the decision to start him over Alex Smith and I am excited that we are once again deep at the QB position.

    • sfarnell says:

Would you feel the same way if Walker had not fumbled and VD would have caught that TD pass?

    • Brotha Tuna says:

      @ James
I’m in agreement with much of what you wrote. Let me disagree with the notion that he (might) “become the next Mike Vick.” I believe that CK is advancing nicely in his command of the mental part of the game, and in that sense and due to his self-discipline he’s already ahead of Vick. If you’re playing 7 on 7 Flag Football, they’re about even; but CK’s already a better NFL QB.

    • 23jordan/ says:

      James,

Unfortunately, your post is bias. You look for warts. WE look at the positives. WE played the Pats in Foxboro yesterday. Maybe you thought it was the Jets in a Dome. You missed a good game buddy.

  27. DS94everXev says:

That was a screwy game which we won, so that is good.

Lots of strange things happened that were very rare.

4-5 fumbled snaps. That is unheard of. But not a single one of them were recovered by the opposing team (NE). And in fact one was returned for a TD for us by FG. The fact not a one of them were recovered by NE is incredibly rare.

We were up 28 in the 2nd half. Then…we weren’t. Only JM had won a game like that in the regular season. That was weird.

After the game was tied, our 180lb rookie who wouldn’t have been active, dragged a NE defender 10-15 yards in the biggest return this year. Andy Lee was the only truly consistent player all game and I think the MVP. (That actually isn’t weird. His booming punts and goodcoverage units were the only good thing that 2nd half all half long)

MC who when covered by NE’s top DB was pretty quiet, wasn’t covered by him after that big possible momentum changer return. What the hell was NE thinking? Stupid coaching decision there.

Then, why was that DB so far off of MC? MC hasn’t burned by anybody deep all year, this game included. What he has done is evade DB’s after the catch. So what was that DB thinking giving MC that much cushion? Small cushion (less than 5) seems in order.

CK recognized that the goodDB wasn’t on him which was good.

CK’s pass to MC was average-poor. Rather low. The kind of pas that had a decent DB been covering either prevents the competion, or makes the tackle with no YAC.

Instead the stupid as hell DB didn’t run up to tackle MC. He looked like he wanted to ask him to dance. He took a bad angle and wasn’t committed. Everybody but him knew what MC would do after the catch. Turn and try to run upfield. The DB didn’t. He must have thought MC planned on running with his back facing the DB all the way down the field because that is where he went. Had he at least grabbed him (take a good angle) he slows MC so help gets there. Stupid as hell DB.

    • chris says:

I agree with you here DS. Nice analysis on the play that ultimately sealed the win.

    • Fourth & Alex says:

Regarding the bad throw, as you call it, from CK- I just don’t know dude. Plenty of elite QBs make the same throw, in the same spot. The difference is CK gets it there a good 10 microseconds faster than anyone we’ve had at QB in a long time, allowing the receiver some time to make a move, turn upfield. Something that was totally lacking with our QBs in the past.

Give credit where it is due, or don’t. But don’t spin an obvious positive into something negative. That just makes your argument weak.

      • sfarnell says:

Yep, it’s gotten to the the point where some complain about the placement of touchdown passes. Bottom line, Walker fumbled and VD didn’t catch a touchdown pass that he should have. The score should have been 55-34.

      • DS94everXev says:

So your “GREAT” argument is that a low thrown pass with no defender near the WR is better than a chest high pass?

        GOT ME THERE! Geezz.

By the way, the time CK saved with his fastball speed is wasted when the WR has to bend over to catch it.

Try it yourself right now. Catch a ball chest/waist high and turn and run and compare how long that takes you compared to you bending down, catching it, turning to run.

Your argument is pathetic. Low thrown balls are better than knee high passes to a wide open WR? Yeah. In a “Hate AS world”. AS throws that pass and you’re crying up a storm.

Admit the DB stank. A better DB and that pass likely falls incomplete because of the poor ball placement. He knocks MC arm preventing the completion.

What is it with you guys? Every pass/non-pass/snap/run with CK is perfect? Sorty. But no Smither would EVER have propsed such lunacy.

Dropping snaps is dropping snaps. Missing wide open WR’s is missing wide open WR’s. Low passes to an open WR aren’t as good as waist/chest high passes toan open WR. End of discussion. At least if you’re of average brain power.

One thing is certain with CK as the QB. You haters don’t know bleep about football. Or analysis. I’ve been right this whole time. You were just hating. No real football analysis at all.

        DS,

You spent the whole off-season arguing that AS doesn’t need to hit the WRs in the chest- in stride for YAC. Now you’re criticizing that another QB for not hitting a WR in the chest on a play that still scored us a TD? Unbelievable.. You claim to offer great analysis but offer only biased opinion. CK made great reads all night especially deciding to go to MC on that play. The pass wasnt great, big deal, they scored a TD on it.

      • DS94everXev says:

        jsand

You thinik knee high passes are better?

Seriously, I need to write Topic for each post I do. You can’t figure it out at all. The topic/blame was why the DB who had MC that gsme wasn’t on him. And the piss poor play of the DB. But you guys who love to start fights pretend that I didn’t write that.

By the way I gave CK crdit for the read. See?

      • jsand3030 says:

        DS,

We read your statement just fine. By saying the DB messed up and then making a remark about the throw placement is all about criticism of CK7. The fact that you’re even criticizing CK7 by using that throw which wasn’t on target but still resulted in a TD is laughable. Its not about the placement of that throw, of coarse it would have been better to place it in his chest. But to criticize him on that play by tour tactic shows what your motives are once again. If you want to criticize his fumbles that’s fair, but give credit where its due and don’t dress it up by saying it was a nice read and then criticizing the throw.

      • jsand3030 says:

I don’t think you realize that you don’t sound like a niner fan when you claim that the DB messed up and gave them that TD. Instead you should be happy with a great decision by CK and catch and run by MC.

      • sfarnell says:

In how many games has AS thrown four TDs? Don’t spend too much time researching. The answer is zero in six and a half years.

      • DS94everXev says:

So you freak out about one sentence among a whole lot of them?

Why not look at it as a whole? Tell me the DB played great. The pass got there. Good. But I’m not pretending it was a good pass. It wasn’t. If that was good, what do you call a pass that actually is chest high? Perfect?

No. I can tell you one thing, CK isn’t happy with that pass. If he is, he isn’t the future of anything. We scored on it. Doesn’t mean he can’t improve on it.

Fans always complain abou their teams players not playing the ball right. We blame DW for the fumble. But ignore the fact the NE defender had something to do with it.

So if a Niner DB gives up a TD, it is his fault. But the DB of another team can’t ever mess up resulting in a TD for us? It is therefore always a perfect play by us? The bad angle, wrong DB in coverage has nothing to do with it at all? Really?

You sound like you aren’t in reality if that is how you process events. Our players make mistakes that result in points. By law, that means other teams players/coaches make mistakes that resut in points. That doesn’t mean you aren’t a fan just because you identify when the other team messed up.

Or maybe it does. To you. And if so, then I’m not a fan. I’m a realist. In the real world though, players of other teams make mistakes that can benefit our team. It does happen.

        sfarnell

What is up with you? 4 TD’s. Great. After 3 games in which he failed to throw for more than 1 TD if that per game. Keep that in your stats mind.

There’s nothing that anyone can do to get you to see it either. I think we know you better than you know yourself by your lack of knowledge on what your own posts say. I hope that you would apply that same “realist” criticism of every position on the field and not just at CK. dangle

If you are a Pats fan, are you going “Wow. What a play to beat us” or are you going “Stupid, stupid DB/DC! What were they thinking”

If it was a great play, both fan bases would say it was great play. If it is what it was, only one fan base says it was great. The other is pouding their fists into the wall for the lunacy of such stupidity.

To me, that means it wasn’t great. Following the NO game, a few Saints fans came on and said AS made a great thrown and VD a great catch to beat them. That is because it was. The winning TD Sunday wasn’t a great play. It was just poor D.

As a fan, I can distinguish between a great play and bad D. Nothing was really great on our part. They just stank. We took advantage and won. Which is good. But don’t mistake that for a great play. It wasn’t. Don’t think that same level of execution will always get it done. It won’t. It did on Sunday and we won. That doesn’t mean it was a great play by us that won it. Surely you can remember a game which we loss where the other team didn’t have a great play, but our D just stank and allowed a non-great play to beat us.

Do you remember Super Bowl XXIII? Or “The Catch”? Those were great plays. Ones which happened with good coverage. They played their best. We played our best. Our best beat their best. That is what makes it great. Our low pass and their inability to tackle/have the right DB/take the right angle isn’t a great play. It just is. In this case it wasn’t our best and it was their worse. Result: Not great.

The win is great. Always good to win. But please distinguish between a great play and a play that won the game. They aren’t always the same. In this case they aren’t. In 1981, they were.

Kaep played great tonight and provided us a much needed win! Hopefully we can get the qb center exchanges fixed, I know it was wet last night but it has happened once or twice in each game I believe. If we can get that fixed and continue to let him throw this offense can be scary. This was a huge win, because now regardless of what happens next Sunday we will have the division lead going into the final week of the season and if you can’t beat Arizonia knowing that then you don’t deserve the division crown. Now time to keep it going and hold on to that first round bye!

  29. Adam says:

Grant, I think you were a tad high last week a bit low this week. (Small criticism – keep up the good work! )

    I’d give CK a solid A.

I think he misses the A+ for the bad center exchanges and even those are a bit picky. The weather was nasty and he can still use the beginner excuse card for the rest of the season.

I’ll give him a pass on the Davis misses for now. Those are things rifle-arm QBs have to work on – have to get a little air under the ball.

Otherwise… absolutely fantastic game by CK. He’s did a lot in this game to cement his future, in my opinion.

  30. undercenter says:

First and foremost that was a great, great win against the mighty Pats. Ck had a up and down game. Four Td passes was terrific. His game management was better for sure. Five botched snaps under center, I dont think I have ever seen that before. Brady had zero problems with the snaps under center. The Niners should of won this game 50+ to whatever. They left points on the field. Another missed FG. The penalities finally were under control. Three bad passes one was intercepted the other two should of been.

I had stated that the game was on the Niners offense, in the first half the Niners offense was fine kept the ball from Brady. Second half the Niners offense basically sucked except for a couple of plays. They needed first downs to keep Brady off the field they did not do that. Brady is an ELITE QB with lots and lots of experience. He can make the best of defenses look terriable. The Pats comeback did not surprise me one little bit, this is a very very good team.

The Niners have beaten three of the four elite QBs, Rogers, Brees, and now Brady. That is no simple feat by any means. Got a real tough game next Sunday against the Hawks. This game scares me more then any other. Hawks are well coached, have a real good maybe great team. Go Niners.

      49ers 28 Patriots 56

      2nd half points scored

      49ers 24 Patriots 31

Before you start ripping the defense remind yourself of the importance their turnovers played in the 2nd half to help set up scores. With that difference in play totals the fact that the Patriots offense only out scored the 49ers by 7 is huge.

      • Dangle says:

        Good point jack.

      • claude balls says:

        @ Jack:

Thanks for providing some perspective. Everyone seems to forget that the Patriots have a potent offense that has been hitting on all cylinders, particularly at home, for weeks.

  31. bayareafanatic says:

A note to JH. My heart cannot take these types of games. Take a page out of Pete Carols book and leave the petal to the metal. Our boys came in and whooped that ass. Our safeties were awesome.
Whitner forced that big fumble, and Goldson hit Hernandez on the chops. Forced him to short arm a few after that. AWESOME.
Carlos Rogers return, AWESOME. Ray McDonald played like a man. AWESOME.
Frank Gore’s fumble recovery run. AWESOME.
    La Michael James return, AWESOME.

There was some bad. First and foremost, I love David Akers, but he has got to go. He changed the complexity of the game. His first miss was terrible. The second time our offense got in range we attempted a 4th and 1 instead of a field goal because we lost confidence. Cannot do that. We lost 6 points right there. And Delainey Walker makes one mistake for every two good plays he comes through with. He’s a liability that isn’t worth having on the team. IMO. His fumble cost us a minimum of 3 but should have been 7.

Colin Kaepernick IMO deserves a solid B. Not an A or an A-. His completion percentage was 56%. He missed one sure TD and had a misread that led to a pick. They will also have to work on the exchanges between him and Goodwin. Although I think it was more weather and wet ball related. I love how this kid is attacking. I love his pocket presence and where he picks his spots to run. And they finally attacked the end zone! 4td’s and 1 int I’ll take that all day. CK is a beast. The only thing holding him back now is the coaching staff who almost blew this game by attempting to sit on a lead early in the third quarter. WE ARE BACK!

    • undercenter says:

Nice post Bay, glad you noted that CK didnt have an A day, as he didnt, but he looks like he is a keeper. Experience will fix most of CKs flaws and can not get the experience unless he plays.

    • rocket says:

      Bay,

Fair and honest breakdown. Good job.

    • jsand3030 says:

Have to agree with the CK grade, solid B maybe a B+ considering an east coast game in Foxboro with the weather as it was. With each game he learn from his mistakes and get better. I noticed that he went down and took a sack in the 4th quarter last night instead of scrambling and losing more yards..

  32. domingo says:

Anyone notice that the offense cut down the excessive shifting last night? As a result Kaep was a lot better at getting the play off in time. Simplify things and let the kid play.

That was the best pass blocking by the offensive line that I have seen in a while. The first drive of the game was impressive. CK can really wing the ball when he gets time. Roman needs to just let Kaep sit back throw the ball more often. There were no really trick or gimmicks last night but Roman went conservative far to often. Let our young playmaker make play’s.

I thought the second fumble was also Goodwin’s fault. I will have to re-watch it but the ball never seemed to hit CK’s hand. It’s impressive that Kaep kept his composure with all miscues while playing in tough conditions against a legendary opponent.

I give CK an A. The mistakes did not prevent him from leading the 49er’s to a great regular season victory. Joe Montana threw three interceptions in the 1981 championship game but who remembers that? That was an A+ performance by Joe and yesterday’s performance by Colin Kapernick was an A.

  33. tkh says:

I don’t know about this grade…4 fumbles, an interception, several missed wide open opportunities, red-zone failures, multiple three and outs, Several very nice downfield throws but for the defensive effort in the first half and some important stops in 2nd half we would be talking about QB failures not victory. No doubt Kaepernick is the present and future QB but if your grading is to have any credibility you have to be honest about the grade, or at least consistent as you were with the previous QB and coaching staff…

    • bayareafanatic says:

You go from one extreme to another tkh. If you want any credibility you have to call it straight too.
You said, “several missed wide open opportunities”. Hmmm I counted two. But I guess that is several if you have an agenda.
Multiple three and outs were on the coaching staff and the play calls. The first half the CK led offense was 50% on 3rd down before they went in shut down mode.
The fumbles were both on CK and the center. And lets not forget freezing rain which left a wet ball.
      Call it straight dude.

    • domingo says:

All NFL QB’s are going to make mistakes and have to face adversity. Sometimes the measure of their success is how well they respond to that adversity and how they rise above it. Grades are not just based on mistake free performance’s but outcomes as well. Kaep was not perfect last night but he proved that he is unflappable and that he, for at least one night in his young career is a winner. Got a feeling that the 49ers are going to win a lot of tough games in the years to come with him at the helm.

    • msclemons67 says:

      41 points.

I’m not sure how you can put a negative spin on 41 points. Unless, of course, you’re a fan of one niner.

  34. domingo says:

We have not seen a 4 touchdown pass game from a 49er QB since Jeff Garcia did back in 2003.

  35. Jack Hammer says:

That was a great game. Champions are defined by what you do when times get tough, and the 49ers responded to the Patriots tying the game by retaking the lead with back to back great plays. The defense, which had struggled through 4 straight Patriot scoring drives then stepped up and shut Brady down.

The play of the night, Ray Mac getting his helmet ripped off and still sacking Brady. That may end up being the defensive play of the year, much like J Smith trying to sack Brees and an o lineman on the same play last season.

  36. J-Dog says:

Grant, just so I am clear. Due to the fact that we have a tie posted on our record. If we lose one of the next games and GB does not lose any of their games, we are bumped from the 2nd seed, correct? Thanks

  37. Brotha Tuna says:

I read Lowell Cohn’s article this morning, and I’d recommend it. But I note that he and I reacted differently to the situation. Lowell teases himself. He says that when the Niners went up 31-3 he started writing an article about the 49ers domination of the game. Obviously things began to change so the article he started had to be revised. He goes on to make another point, but I’ll let him do that for himself.
For me, I felt great when ‘we’ went up 31-3. A friend’s wife said ok, we can turn this game off now because its over. Me and the other five guys all said Whoa! We’re talking about Brady here, it aint over til its over. We joked that the fat lady might be warming up. We also all said we hoped that Roman wouldn’t get too conservative. We never imagined that VF would go soft; we thought he’d be all NY Giants/Lions all out rush style and leverage the lead. Ummmmm, Oh well x2.
Question is, who the heck DIDN’T think Brady would bring ‘em back? Its Brady. Well, ok, Harbaugh, Roman, Fangio, and Lowell among them. The non-experts where I was were seriously concerned.

    • 9ersurf says:

After the patriots scored their 1st TD and we went 3 and out, I knew then and turned to my wife and said, “this game is far from over.” As a fan of football, this was a fun game to watch. I hope it was a Super Bowl preview

      • Fansince 77 says:

I had the same reaction. Our offense can look so lame at times regardless who is at quarterback. Like we lack the kiler instinct.

  38. 23Jordan says:

I think most of us are forgetting the circumstances in which Kap excelled under.

    1. At least half the people on this blog felt like he shouldnt be starting. Said he wasn’t ready yet.

    2. Half the ex players in the media like Faulk, Steve Young, Dilfer , Moon and several others felt like Smith
    should have his job back.

    3. Over half of you wanted the Niners to win as fans of the team but didnt think we had a chance against the Pats.

    4. The pressure on Kap to play well in this game was huge. Most people said this was the test he needed to pass. He did.

    5. Kap had the most pressure on him heaped on him by his teammates. A couple of whom, believe Smith should still be starting.

    6. 35 degrees and rain all game.

    7. Playing the mighty tom Brady and Coach BB in December where they were 20-0 in forever and had only lost 1 game in december at home in his career.

    8. He has 5 career NFL starts. 5 NFL STARTS!!!!

    9. This is his 2nd season.

    10. Hes has the pressure from us fans to win a super bowl this year.

I never had any doubt in my mind that we would win this game. We will not win another football gane this year. We are going to the super bowl boys.

Kap gets an A++++++ in my book.

    8.

    • 23Jordan says:

I forgot this one. Brady ties the game up. Kap reads the blitz and hits Crabtree for 6. I never had a doubt that he would win this game. If brady had scored more, kap would’ve scored more!

    • Dee Phiant says:

For somebody who’s holding on to the past (#23???) you sure are good to overlook the obvious. Kap looked like a HS-QB yesterday.
This wasn’t the first time Kap fumbled a snap……… It’s a lapse of concentration, of being ahead of yourself. Brady didn’t fumble in this weather! His pass to Crab was underthown, Crab made the play and CK gets the credit! TD pass to Moss was overthrown. Kap had some great passes against one of the worst defenses.
      Seattle will stuff this turkey!

    • Adam says:

“We will not win another football gane this year.”

What are you going on about?

And your big snub falls flat, you were all over Josh Johnson in the pre-season, as I recall.

    • 23Jordan says:

Adam don’t be a hater. it’s unfortunate that Alex is not the starting quarterback. hey clown Josh didn’t make the team. start packing your bags for Kansas City Smithers!!!

      • dangle says:

josh didn’t make the team, much to your shagrin. You were all about how great he is, own that much at least dude

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Dangle,

If you saw the games like everyone else, you know that Josh outplayed Tolzien. He’s not on the team anymore. You rode Smiths nuts and he’s not on the team anymore. What’s the difference??

    • 23Jordan says:

my mistake we will not lose another game this year I’ve said it a 2 weeks.

    • Fourth & Alex says:

When it comes to Dilfer- well of course he’s going to love Alex. It’s like looking in the mirror all the time.

Dilfer flat out sucked. I don’t care that he won a Super Bowl. Britney Spears could have been in at QB and they still would have won with that defense that year.

I think Dilfer finds himself supporting Alex because he knows he’s really just defending himself.

  39. Adam707 says:

I have been very skeptical of CK. All WR have heard is how he makes the offense more dynamic and he can do things Smith can’t. But we hadn’t seen anything of the sort. Last night Colin showed it. He made throws that Ales either couldn’t make or wouldn’t make. His first 3 TDs were all throws that wouldn’t have happened with Smith at QB. I think this was the game that will put all Niner fans on the Kaep bandwagon.

    • 23Jordan says:

      Adam 707,

Welcome to the bandwagon. We dont have any premium seating available. However, there is some space in the back. Lol. Just kidding bro. Stand by. Kap is not finished! Watch next week.

      • Adam says:

What do you mean “we”? Did you jump off the Josh Johnson bandwagon?

      • bayareafanatic says:

Someone always has to be a dyk… Really Adam? Adam707 welcome buddy…

      • Adam says:

Yeah, just returning the favor, Bay ;)

      • ninermd says:

Really! Adam are you bitter? Why are you bringing up old posts about a guy who isn’t on the team? Guess since smith Didnt play you can’t enjoy the win. Or should I go Claude on you and bring up some of your “holier than thou” posts when you said you wouldn’t stoop to the child level of posting and talk football only? How’s that sound my dude? Relax and enjoy the win like a 49er fan should do. Who are you trying to be bs? Now that’s a black cloud on a sunny day.

      • rocket says:

Give it a rest. Jordan deserves it for patting himself on the back and trying to pretend he is somehow clairvoyant when in reality he supported a player who didn’t even make the team and wanted the guy he now worships to be traded because he didn’t think he was the answer.

It’s fine to support a player but don’t pretend you knew something you didn’t or believed in the guy all along when you didn’t. This is an example of the many on this board who would rather be given credit and kudos for being right about something than enjoy the success of the team.

      • ninermd says:

Rocket…. Try focusing on a win. We know you’re still one of the bitter ones. So what we can go back and forth with I told you so’s?

      • rocket says:

        MD,

Bitter? Not even a little. I’m enjoying my team winning games and couldn’t care less about how they do it or who they do it with. If you are confusing my insistence on accountability from people who post unsubstantiated information with being bitter, you are mistaken. I dislike Bullsh*t being spread around like it’s factual info is all. As far as the teams performance, I couldn’t be happier. They just beat a team that many think is the best in the league in their building. Hasn’t been done in ten years. What is there to be bitter about?

      • claude balls says:

        @ rocket:

Maybe if you didn’t use such big words or express coherent thoughts, your message might get through. I suggest that you get drunk. That might put you on the same level intellectually.

Or you give yourself a concussion.

      • claude balls says:

*Or you could give yourself a concussion.

      • rocket says:

        Claude,

Very good point. Sometimes I forget who I’m dealing with. MD may think I’m bitter if he doesn’t understand what I’m saying.

MD I’m happy dude. All is good and I’m enjoying this epic season my guys are having. I’ve never given a crap about who the QB is as long as the team wins. I hate BS being spread about Alex Smith which is why I stand up for him, but I believe in Harbaugh and will continue to until he gives me reason to think otherwise. I also have always liked Kap and have never gotten into the slap fights over who the better QB is. I leave that up to the HC.

        Thanks for the tip Claude.

      • bayareafanatic says:

Claude nice job. You are a much better intermediary than debater : )
Rocket what you say is true. That’s why you posts are so enjoyable. Truly objective.

You’re still here. I remember you crying like a school girl 2 months ago. Thankfully, you’ve recovered. I was worried that I wouldn’t see your cute little helmet anymore. I’m a team guy. No Alex, no Josh. Neither one were good enough.

      • 23jordan/ says:

Rocket the objective one. You’re full of Crap. You’re a Smither like the rest of the lost. Who gives a damn about what you don’t like. Don’t like it. Disappear with the rest of the Smithers when Alex does. Good riddance! You whiny little girls kill me.

      • claude balls says:

        2. Extreme malice and bitterness shown in someone’s attitudes, speech, or action.

Yeah, that sounds exactly like rocket.

  40. old coach says:

There is only onearea of concern regarding CK going foreward. Ball security, it could cost us in the playoffs.Harbaugh needs to make it a point of emphasis everyday. Other than that things are looking up.

    • Grant Cohn says:

I remember his first day of training camp as a rookie. He fumbled the snap about 50 times in two hours.

    • claude balls says:

      @ old coach:

The encouraging thing is that Kaepernick doesn’t keep repeating the same mistakes. I feel pretty confident that the center-QB exchange will not be an issue going forward.

    • Adam says:

Eh… most likely just the weather.

Probably not much to be worried about. All he can do is get better at those exchanges. Take a ton of reps.

      • Matt says:

I’ll just add, “the Duke” is already an incrediby hard slick ball. Get it wet and it because a melting icicle.
I don’t believe Colin Kaepernick wears gloves as a QB. Perhaps in the next rainy game, you’ll see a change there.

      • Prime Time says:

Still Matt wet or not, it could have been devastating. Two times we escaped. One led to a touchdown by Gore but still that can never happen at this level.
Goody and CK need to figure that out yesterday.

  41. old coach says:

My concern is more than the center exchange. I worry about his ball security in general. He has put the ball on the ground a few other times this year we have just been lucky and recovered the ball so it has’nt shown as a turnover

    • claude balls says:

      old coach:

I hear you, but NE forces more fumbles than anyone, and they weren’t able to force any from Kaepernick.

Obviously, I am not counting the fumbled snaps as forced fumbles. Others may disagree.

      • Calistoga Red says:

Old Coach – That’s my last lingering concern about CK. He has answered every other question, but he’s put the ball on the ground in every game he’s started (I think, I could be wrong) but the bounces have gone our way. I’d hate for that trend to continue only to have our luck turn the other way come playoffs. We need to save that luck so we don’t run out.

  42. Rick says:

The first TD pass to Crabtree should end any debate about Harbaugh’s decision to go with CK. That ball had to be thrown on a line, with about a +/- 6 Inch margin of error. With all due respect, Alex does not even attempt that pass much less complete it.

Even after the Patriots tied the game up, I had no doubt in my mind that we were going to win.

Harbaugh is a genius. No doubt about it.

  43. J-Dog says:

Just to throw this out there. Seattle beat NE this year. We have beaten both Seattle and NE now. We are going to Seattle this week.
    1) Any news re Seattle’s DB and court hearing for game availability?
    2) Are you guys (Niner nation) concerned more about this week’s must game win vs Seattle than you were about NE?

    • Ed from AZ says:

Maybe only because their defense is better than NE’s, but if the two CBs are suspended it could help SF’s cause. And we know SF can win there, they did it last year with less than what they have now. Hoping for a convincing win against Cheatin’ Pete!

  44. Jack Hammer says:

Too early to bring this up?

    WWL,WWL,WWT,WWL,WW?

    Break the string this week.

    • old coach says:

Jack you just jinxed us. Now that everyone is laying off G. Roman. Grant will have to run a column blaming you if we lose next week.

    • jsand3030 says:

shhhhhhhhh. Im trying to pretend i didn’t read that

    • jsand3030 says:

Are you saying that we are going to lose in Seattle and then tie Arizona?

    • Coffee's for closers says:

In the words of Mr Peabody; “Quiet you!”

    • Mr. Automatic says:

      If you extrapolate this out:

      Seattle – L
      Arizona – W
First week of playoffs – Bye
      Divisional Game – W
      Conference Game – T

      Wait, what?! 0_o

      • jsand3030 says:

So a tie in the NFC championship game? What happens then? do we combine our team with the other team and form a super-team to play against the AFC team? What team would help form our Voltron mega team?

      • dangle says:

If we lose to SEA isn’t it very likely that we get the wild card and therefore no first round bye…

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Dangle,

If we lose to Seattle , and we won’t, all we have to do is beat Arizona to win the division. Seattle has 5 losses. We control the division. We beat Arizona, we win the division.

  45. Grumpy Guy says:

Arguing about any warts in this game by CK is equal to arguing about AS’s inability to put away the Saints despite all the fist half turnovers in the playoff game. We won – that is the primary thing, in both cases.

In both games, we won despite difficult circumstances. Last night, the elements and being on the road make hanging 41 on the Pats particularly sweet. Four TD passes and a win make everything look better, even if the game was far from technically perfect.

I’m just glad the coaching meltdown in the third quarter did not give the game away. Both Roman and Fangio got conservative WAY too early considering Brady was the opposing QB. Grant is right (hey, even a broken clock… ;) the coaches HAVE to learn not to take the foot off the pedal too early.

The big thing now is Justin Smith’s MRI. I like our playoff chances a whole lot better if he is okay.

Now we need Grant to pick the Seahawks next week, in order to reverse mojo our “two good, one bad” streak. C’mon, Grant, do the ‘right’ thing. :)

    • old coach says:

Roman did’nt get conservative Harbaugh did.

    • Calistoga Red says:

I was watching last night’s game and thought to myself: this is CK’s version of AS’s Saints game last year. Big stage, great play, a victory no one will forget.

But then I realized that AS’s win still holds a little more water as it was a more pressure packed playoff game (win and you’re in, lose and you’re out) yet many on here seem to have forgotten that game already. Hopefully CK gets a SB win that no one can ever forget.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Calistoga

Nice positive vibrations covering up your doubt. You think Kaep will take a huge sh*t in his next game, like the irrelevant backup did against the Giants after the Saints game?

      • Calistoga Red says:

Why does everything need to be negative? Sure, AS is now the backup, but that doesn’t mean we need to wipe him off the record books or trash him the way some here have.

The fact is that playoff games matter more. CK had a great coming out party last night on national TV (another one if you want to count the W against the Bears). But it wasn’t a playoff game. Here’s to hoping he gets that big win that’s even bigger than what AS did last year.

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Calistoga

Why? I don’t know why you diminished last night’s win by comparing it negatively to another Niners victory. The fact is last night’s victory was a much more pronounced accomplishment because it was against a team that hadn’t lost at home in December since 2001 … and it clinched a spot in the playoffs, meaning the team gets to go on in the second season.

I think we both agree that no accomplishment is truly a great accomplishment unless it garners #6, yesno?

      • Prime Time says:

Tarzan you get funnier and funnier with every useless post!

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Beefcake

Glad I can amuse you, bud.

  46. La-La Land says:

CK7 became the first Niner QB to throw four TDs since 2003. Water is coming back to the desert.

  47. ninermd says:

My outlook on this snap thing is they’re both at fault. (Goodwin and ck)
I think last night the weather had a little to do with it, and it looked as if ck got ahead of himself at times and broke concentration. A couple looked like a bad snap and I’ve noticed that when ck started and was in shotgun he was bending down grabbing the ball off of the ground.
Those two need to stay for detention and practice the snaps for awhile.

  48. old coach says:

Harbaugh said it was CK not Goodwin. He said it had something to do with hand placement . CK needed to rotate his hand presnap after he made the correction it did’nt happen again.

    • exgolfer says:

      Old Coach,

CK was holding his hands with the heels of his hands separated. They should be touching. I would bet that’ll be fixed by Sunday night. CK has shown that, not only is he coachable, he is able to incorporate the coaching into his game, and show improvement with a short turn around.

It may be overly optomistic, but I believe CK is on the way to becoming a top tier NFL QB.

  49. Trent says:

Good game for Kap and the niners good team win just fix the fumbles

  50. Eric says:

It’s funny how people say Kaepernick isn’t that good. 5 nfl games starts total in his career. And he is playing unbelievable for such a lack of play time experience . He is already throwing more tds than smith against top teams. Beating the Patriots and Saints, crazy for him to do that. I give him an A++++++. 5 starts 4-1. He’s a heck of a player. Give him time and experience and he may be a hall of famer one day and everyone may be saying, man this new rookie isn’t as good as Kaepernick.

  51. Mr. Everything says:
