SEATTLE, Wa. – The Seahawks crushed the 49ers 42-13 Sunday night. Here are the grades for the defense and special teams.
Defensive line: F. They couldn’t stop the run or tackle the quarterback. The Seahawks ran right down the 49ers’ throat all game. Ray McDonald and Ricky Jean Francois took turns getting moved aside at the line of scrimmage. On many of the Seahawks run plays, it looked like there was an open highway right down the middle of the 49ers’ defensive line.
Linebackers: F+. Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks must have missed five sacks a piece. Every time they got in the backfield, Russell Wilson sidestepped them, no problem. Smith and Brooks needed to force Wilson to stay in the pocket at the very least, and they couldn’t even do that. NaVorro Bowman had 16 total tackles, but most of them came down the field after Marshawn Lynch had already gained five or six yards. Patrick Willis finished with just six tackles. He did intercept a pass in Seahawks territory, so I’ll bump this group’s grade up from an F to an F+.
Secondary: F. When the Seahawks weren’t running down the 49ers’ throat, they were abusing Carlos Rogers. He gave up about 10 catches, including a deep one to Doug Baldwin and a touchdown to Baldwin. Donte Whitner gave up a touchdown to backup tight end Anthony McCoy.
Special teams: F. LaMichael James averaged 28.7 yards per kickoff return which was very good, but then he fumbled a kickoff in the second half. David Akers had a field goal attempt blocked and returned 90 yards for a touchdown. The kick coverage team allowed Leon Washington to average 31.5 yards per kick return.

So every thing was a f eh grant?
IMHO, yes.
We were awful in every phase of the game tonight. Just awful.
Worst game of the JH Era.
Yes sir!
While I agree with F’s almost across the board I have to give the special teams at least a D+. Though there were a blocked kick and a fumble (hence a failing grade) there were some good returns, some good coverage and a 54 yard field goal from a guy who hasn’t hit over 35 in weeks. So D or D+ for special teams. Everyone else should own that F.
I’m sick of it Alex has suited and is ready to play JH is bringing him back lol u didn’t see the signs every other game the camera men show him on the sidelines with his helmet on and a cup in his hand but not today no sir he was getting ready for arizona so he can get his kinks out for the playoffs
Shouldn’t the defense get an Incomplete? They didn’t even show up.
I’ve said it before. The San Francisco Forty-Niners are Santa Clara Football Stadium, first and foremost. They spend very little money on improving the team. The owners are cheap. They should have traded or made a move for an established quarterback when Harbaugh first came aboard. Instead, they kept the problem. Alex Smith. Now, they have no established quarterback, a joke for Offensive Coordinator, and a poor system of player selection and game preparation.
The Defense has the same players as last season, minus Parys Haralson.
They added no depth, and found most of their players in the bargain basement of football. Frank Gore is past it. Half of his career is spent getting caught in the backfield. Bad coaching will kill you. And a cheap ownership will get you a football team that’s a step slow, and a dollar short. Not to mention, players you acquire because they’re castoffs.
All of that and they are going to win the divinson, I guess you don’t remember the last 8 years.
read Lowell Cohn: The myth of Jim Harbaugh. That means the fiction. If you want the facts, read a San Diego newspaper. DUI (driving under the influence). So we gotta ask: Jim, did you take any prescription medication before the game yesterday? (or did you choose to “self medicate” and have a little sip…?) Fans who care are advising two things: (1) a breath-a-lizer test before the game, and (2) a urine tox screen the morning after a win or a loss. If Coach Harbaw needs help, gather the facts (not the myths) and help him. PLEASE…!!!
just what we needed a slap in the face to re-focus also to show roman to run the ball then pass dumb… our d/st is tired
Dear Coach Harbaw: Let us not get too excited about football strategy (run/pass/run… or run.run.pass or pass.pass.pass or ….ad infinitum). Why? Because very, very soon you will be practicing your golf game again. Translation: the season is gonna end “early”… Maybe it already has……
Your favorite caddy (remember Pebble Beach?),
Alex (former starting & winning QB) Smith
Is that you again Prime Randy, Axel and Santa and many more?
So many fair weather fans on here, who live in the moment, hope you don’t live your lives like that. React to everything. We are going to win the divinsion, we are in the playoffs. Anything can happen.
I have said all season long that the defense was not playing up to their ability. Jack Hammer amongst other have told me, we are a top defense. Look at the stats they say, my eyes continue to say they are not a great defense. There are weakness on the defense, smart coaches are able to pick the defense apart. Without the offense performing this defense can not stand up to the onslaught provided by the offensive minded teams. I felt in the Pats game it was entirly on the offense to win that game, in this Hawks game I felt it was on the defense. Defense let down but in their defense they got bascially zero help from the offense. Grade D.
Special teams, that blocked kick was on the O-line they didnt get the job done. LMJ had a good game going till his fumble even tho it didnt hurt us it just showing that we still got problems on returns. Grade D.
Under,
Last night was bad, but the offense is still one of the best out there. One game won’t change my view of their ability.
Even without Justin Smith?
I hear ya Jack, I treat this game like I did the Giants game, it wasnt a typical Niners game. These kind of games happen I just hoping that fans realize that we have issues across the board. I am not picking on one player/coach, I just feel we got problems. Cant fix it if you dont recognize what the problems are.
Yes. Last night they played about like they did in the first game. Difference, short field, blocked kick, and the receivers didn’t drop the ball.
Another difference, third down and red zone. Inept.
They stink it up on 3rd down and in the Red Zone the first game as well.
Say what you want about Carroll, but I love the enthusiasm he shows. Isn’t the game supposed to be fun? Don’t get me wrong, I hate it when it’s at the 49ers expense, but that stuff is infectious.
I’m sorry, I was talking about the 49ers defense.
Got ya. They did stop them once I think ; )
**defense** lol
Serious question, have they said what’s wrong with JS elbow? Broken? Bruised? Battered?
This should be, a run first team (based on their OL personel), instead, hoping to silence the crowd with an early lead they came out chucking the ball. Bad move. What silences the crowd is extended 12 play drives that end in touchdowns. RUN THE FREAKING BALL!
This is why I said Vic Fangio is going to get beat if he doesn’t bring in fresh pass rushers. Our Dline hasn’t had sacks all year its one of the worst pass rushing Dline in the nfl. You take Aldon off our defense and we are pathetic at rushing the qb. So why can’t we bring in and rotate pass rushers like Pete Carrol does? Difference between seahawks and 49ers defense is there pressure and they have like 8 different guys to bring in to keep them fresh. No reason why RJF and Sopoaga and Ray Mcdonald should be playing that many snaps. Wish we had Rex Ryan as a cordinator he would have our defense flying at the qb with real speed rushers. Vic Fangio has Bowman and Willis as coverage lbs!! What a waste! By the way…I would like to see #27 Cj spillman get some snaps at safety. Donte Whitner is one of the worst coverage safetys in the nfl.
