Dolphins-49ers live blog: Second quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the second quarter of the 49ers Week 14 game against the Miami Dolphins. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

1:35 On second and goal from the nine, Aldon Smith sacks Ryan Tannehill from behind. He owns the 49ers franchise record with 18.5

1:36 Tannehill dumps it off to Bush on third and long, and he picks up seven. Dan Carpenter will try a 28-yard field goal. And he makes it. 3-0 Dolphins.

1:42 On second and seven, LaMichael James runs a sweep to the left and picks up 10 yards. He looked extremely fast on that play. Next, Kaepernick play fakes, rolls right and hits Crabtree with a short pass. Crabtree cuts back and picks up 13 yards after the catch. Next play, James runs another sweep to the left, gains four yards and then takes a late hit for a 15-yard penalty. First and 10 at the 32, and this time Gore runs a sweep to the left for three yards. Second and seven at the Dolphins’ 29.

1:46  Crabtree gains nine yards on a wide receiver screen, setting up first and 10 at the Dolphins’ 20. Kaepernick slightly overthrows Crabtree in the front right corner of the end zone on first down, Gore picks up nine yards up the middle on second down and the 49ers call timeout on third and 1.

1:49 Geep Chryst and Greg Roman flub it. They use a jumbo formation, a.k.a. no wide receivers, a.k.a. an obvious run. The Dolphins stop Gore for a one-yard loss, of course. Chryst and Roman called a timeout to set up that horrendous play. Akers makes a 30-yard field goal. 3-3 with eight minutes left in the second quarter. Extremely conservative play calling. Clearly they don’t trust their pass protection to hold up on third down.

1:59 Reggie Bush picks up two first down – one running and one receiving. On first and 10 from the Dolphins’ 45, Lamar Miller gains one yard on a sweep to the left. Demarcus Dobbs is lying in the field in a lot of pain.

2:01 It appears he injured his right knee. He’s being helped off the field. He cannot put much weight on his right leg.

2:03 Tannehill throws a pass behind Reggie Bush on third and six. The Dolphins punt, and the 49ers will get the ball at their 20 yard line. A Dolphin downed the ball at 49ers one-yard line, but he just kept walking into the end zone, and the refs correctly called a touchback.

2:09 Dobbs is out for the rest of the game.

2:10 On the first play of the drive, Kaepernick drops back and fires a deep out to Michael Crabtree for a 25-yard gain. What a great throw.

2:12 Randy Moss catches a 13-yard pass, and on the next play catches a 17-yard pass. First and 10 at the 26.

2:14 Kaepernick throws a screen pass to LaMichael James for a 15-yard gain. Good play call for a change by Greg Roman.

2:15 Anthony Davis watches Wake run around him. Anthony Davis watches Wake sack Kaepernick.

2:16 Next play, James runs a sweep to the left and cannot break a tackle. He’s tackled for a two-yard loss.

2:17 Next play, Kaepernick throws the ball away to kill the clock before halftime. Akers makes a 37-yard field goal as time expires. 6-3 49ers at halftime.

2:18 Anthony Davis gave up three sacks in the first half. He’s the weak link of the 49ers offense today. He’s making it extremely difficult for the 49ers to pass on passing downs.

2:19 Geep Chryst is having a horrible game as the 49ers offense’s red zone coordinator. He’s called three runs and a pass that became a sack.

2:21 Despite Anthony Davis, Colin Kaepernick has completed 12-of-15 passes for 133 yards (8.9 yard per pass). His QB rating is 103.6.

2:24 The 49ers have given up 3 sacks, 5 QB hits and 6 tackles for losses. Greg Roman, John Morton and Geep Chryst’s game plan is not working. They need to make serious adjustments at halftime. They need to call more bootlegs, for starters.

2:26 Frank Gore has five carries for 26 yards. He’s running well, but Roman is not sticking with him. Roman stuck with him last week when Gore wasn’t running well. What is Roman thinking? He needs to adjust. The run is working.

  1. LSX says:

    Hold em, D!

  2. tkamB says:

    Aldon Smith, such a beast

  3. Ed from AZ says:

Missed most of the first quarter, how’s the offense looking? Jenkins active?

  4. shawnrhod says:

    Finally a sack

    Enough games… Pistol offese James

  5. Brotha Tuna says:

Ah! Good morning Defense. So glad to see you! ; >)

  6. SleepMode says:

Does it appear to you as if the team is tired or simply poorly prepared? Miami is quicker, faster and more aggressive.

Either that or the Niners are just starting to suck and they peaked too early. The defense finally did something but they needed to to it at midfield, not on their own 10-yard line.

  7. Coffee's for closers says:

One thing that is clear is how much more explosive our offense is with Kaepernick. Would be nice if explosive actually equaled points but I guess that’s asking to much.

    • Adam707 says:

It’s funny because all we hear is how “explosive” the offense is with CK in, but we have yet to actually see it. We are averaging less points and yards.

    • domingo says:

Some actually pass blocking would be nice.

    • Nick says:

Thats an idiotic comments like. Defenses are taling away deep routes. Didn’t your read what Fangio said last week?

  8. DS94everXev says:

Some points against a sub 0.500 team would be nice.

  9. Coffee's for closers says:

Good thing we have the mobile gun slinger QB to run up the score on these hapless Dolphins.

  10. shawnrhod says:

    Nice some edge speed finally

  11. Fesnyc says:

    Nice run!

  12. tkamB says:

    LaMichael James! Love that burst

  13. MontanaMan16 says:

    LMJ! Thats my running back!

  14. big niner says:

    Lmj loves the read option…!!!

  15. DS94everXev says:

Maybe give LMJ the ball more.

  16. domingo says:

    LMJ’s!

  17. bayareafanatic says:

    James.
    Crab!!!

  18. Big Suede says:

That is what we need- more james. It is stupid that James hasnt been playing yet this season.

Also if you want to complain about the offense- direct your anger to the offensive line. They are just not getting the job done- 2 sacks and a false start in the first quarter killed them

    • angusinCanada says:

I thought one of the reasons you stated you wanted Smith injured was the sacks? Do you want Kaep injured now too?

      • Big Suede says:

Kaep is getting hit less than 2 seconds after the snap. That is a offensive lineman getting used.

Alex smith was taking sacks after 3 or 4 seconds.

There is a difference between sacks. I never complained about Smith taking a sack when a lineman got used. Same with when Gore gets tackled immediately for a loss- that isnt on Gore- it is on the lineman who isnt executing

    • bayareafanatic says:

      +1 big suade

    • Pot...Kettle says:

Kaepernick walked into the first sack by stepping up when he didn’t have to; right into the sack. But Anthony Davis is just plain getting beat.

      • Austin Matt says:

Last game avg sack was 4 seconds. Big suede – you happy with 19 points in the las 7 qtrs? Do you understand that presnap matters? Kap has all the tools, but he is not running the offense as well as smith.

  19. MontanaMan16 says:

You see them holding VD on that Crab catch?

  20. big niner says:

    15 yards!!

  21. angusinCanada says:

good play by crabs there. I’m telling you, this guy on a pass 1st team, he’d be an all-pro.

  22. bayareafanatic says:

    Roman made adjustment

  23. Fesnyc says:

Crabs gets more yac w kaep vs alex

  24. tkamB says:

    Missed one there

  25. Adam707 says:

Kaep needs to make that throw. Crab had a 3 yard cushion!

  26. big niner says:

    Geep chryst putting in work!!

  27. shawnrhod says:

Hopefully JH called the TO to run a sweep with L. Lames… just sayin

  28. DS94everXev says:

Come on JH! We got some momentum after that FG run. I don’t want Miami to get a chance to get their breaths back.

  29. tkamB says:

    Bad play call

  30. Jeff from Colfax says:

Hey Jimmy Raye nice of you to show up.

  31. big niner says:

damn Dive play!!! why not go 5 wide and let ck run?

  32. Adam707 says:

Predictable offense leads to FGs/punts. Take a timeout to call that BS? Roman and harbaugh need to pull their heads out of their A$$

  33. bayareafanatic says:

Terrible play call. Timeout for that????

  34. shawnrhod says:

Just how they teach them in pee wee. If the G pulls, follow him… = FG nothing. Bad call they should of been more creative out of a time out. Coaching has been suspect the last few weeks.

  35. Jeff from Colfax says:

Waste a time out for that crap!

  36. Jacktoo says:

Dansby knew what was coming, he followed the pulling guard

  37. big niner says:

Play calling to lose. No killer instinct. We will not go far like this. Does Bellicheater kick it there?

  38. shawnrhod says:

That was a Sing-type of play.

  39. Jason says:

What kind of call is that?? The whole world knew it was going to be a run. Another brilliant call by Roman…

  40. steelematic says:

Am i the only person that notices that when ur watching a dootball game it takes forever to end. But when our beloved Niners are on that game flys by.

  41. MontanaMan16 says:

0 for 3 on 3rd down and 0 for 1 in the red zone.!

  42. Jacktoo says:

That Jumbo formation run has been well scouted, should use and run a different play.

    • shawnrhod says:

I honestly thought CK was going to play action and roll out… *sigh*

I dont like the lets play safe and keep the score close. That is what the Fins hope to do. Then have AKERS miss a field goal or some bs.

      Lets go niners!!!

  43. 49er42 says:

    Disagree.
We are a running team we should be able to pick up a yard. We are not dominating on the O line like we should.

  44. IntelligentAj says:

Why would you go with a Jumbo formation there when CK has had success passing out of the pocket? Run a rollout and try to pass for another 1st down. It’s worked 4 times already

  45. JDilla says:

Didn’t think the offense could get any more boring, but being proven otherwise

  46. Jacktoo says:

I don’t care if it’s boring I just want it to SCORE TOUCHDOWNS!

    • JDilla says:

i agree, it wouldn’t be boring if we can score a td. dont care if its all runs or all passes as long as we score

  47. alexisbetter says:

colin should have done a naked boot on that jumbo run.

  48. DS94everXev says:

So how is CK’s redzone success as a starter now?

Nice to get a FG. But these aren’t the ’85 Bears here.

  49. Big Suede says:

The other thing I am not understanding is why Kaep is being a pocket passer all the time.

This guy is like a rookie mike vick. He should be carrying the ball 5-10 times per game by design. The only reason you dont do this is to protect him. But with Smith as your backup- the niners can afford to let Kaep get hit a little bit.

Just the whole strategy of the offensive gameplan- I am not getting it. I was watching the redskins earlier- and they are just very dynamic and use their QBs to play up their strengths. I am not seeing that here.

  50. 49er42 says:

Does it appear to any one else that once there is an incomplete pass in the red zone the play calls are almost all runs?

  51. Jack Hammer says:

Just cannot miss open receivers in the Red Zone.

  52. Big Suede says:

I will also say this- I might have blamed more of this offensive ineptitude on Smith being an average qb before- but the picture is getting clearer that Roman is the problem. Guy is lousy.

    • Jeff from Colfax says:

      Most boring since Raye.

      • Big Suede says:

He isnt at Raye level- I think he is actually going to other way.

Whereas Ray was just very simple. I think roman is just too complicated and making everything harder than it needs to be. He has the playbook so filled with different looks that the niners can never become GREAT at any of them. Successful plays are hardly ever run twice- and that is a mistake.

James has a great sweep- and then they dont go to it again. Kaep makes yards almost everytime he bootlegs but when was the last time we saw it? And I still dont understand why we havent seen any screens the last couple games.

  53. Jeff from Colfax says:

Damn Brady looks good today. Oh wait.

  54. RickyP says:

‘Time of Possession’ is on Dolphin side big time.

  55. big niner says:

    there goes Dobbs right knee…

  56. shawnrhod says:

    Injuries piling up.

We need to pass to open the run. They will not let Gore beat them.

  57. BarNone says:

This is what happens when teams have film and start to game plan against a QB…

Two safeties over the top, taking away the deep pass. Strong rush up the middle, while CK hops and looks deep.

CK will need to adjust and take what the D gives him underneath.

  58. bayareafanatic says:

    D’s gotta step up

  59. Fesnyc says:

Injury bug really catching up with us after a pretty clean 2011 season

  60. big niner says:

they took that play call out of the Rams game last week

  61. big niner says:

    loooooooooooooooolllllllllllllllllllll idiot

  62. ribico says:

    Whew – a HUGE break.

  63. RolloTomasi says:

    Ted Ginn gets lucky

    • ribico says:

      Ginn did the right thing.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

Why? Ginn should let it go at that part of the field!

      • DS94everXev says:

Ginn would have made a mistake not running away from the ball. Had the ball bounced back and hit him, it would have been a live ball with a lot of Dolphin players.

Nice play by CK-MC, then CK needs to ses Miller loses yards and throw it into the dirt. That play was over with. No need to lose yards.

  64. domingo says:

    Bone-Head!

  65. bayareafanatic says:

    Buahahaha. Idiot

  66. DS94everXev says:

And that is why Miami is a sub 0.500 team.

    Gosh they are stupid.

  67. RolloTomasi says:

I’d like to see LMJ return punts.

  68. Spaceborn says:

Got lucky on that one. 49ers need to score a TD on this next drive. No more playing for the FG, Roman!

  69. big niner says:

his left foot touched the line.

  70. big niner says:

roman needs to get his acts together now.

  71. IntelligentAj says:

Maybe I’m confused but how can the Dolphins take away our deep passes and cover our short routes. Their D is good but it’s not that good

  72. Fesnyc says:

    Beauty

  73. big niner says:

    You think crabs likes CK7?

  74. LSX says:

    Crabtree is da man

  75. big niner says:

    any screens?

  76. Big Suede says:

LOL- CBS just screwed the dolphins there- they showed the wrong step. it was the third one that hit the line

  77. Adam707 says:

Yea we should definitely trade or release MC…….

  78. Chris says:

Hmmm wonder if Smith could have “managed” his way into end zone by now. This new “dynamic game plan is Boring

  79. MontanaMan16 says:

Moss wouldn’t be a shell of his former self if they’d use him more….like this!

  80. RolloTomasi says:

    LMG is like Sproles

  81. I.P. Daily says:

Davis is a lousy tackle, period…

  82. DS94everXev says:

Good thing AS isn’t in there to get sacked.

    • bayareafanatic says:

Hey pathetic. We always knew u were not a 49er fan.

      • Adam707 says:

DS showing it is a Smith fan. Not a niner.

      • ribico says:

Or maybe he’s just showing his frustration, eh? 49ers offense is approaching Jets-like futility.

Our D is keeping us in it, the O will wake up in the 2nd half.

    • Neal says:

      DS ,
AS is done, he has not played in 4 weeks, you really are showing your true colors, you are a AS fan, and not a Niner fan, your a hater of the team, you want the Niners to fail, you are so exposed. You must ber brutal to live with, you probably bring up to your spouse, that she left hair on the bar of soap 10 yrs ago. Get help DS Hates the Niners. Keep on whining loser.

  83. BigP says:

    Somebody missed their block, yikes.

    • NinerNation says:

Anthony Davis missed the block just standing there but i believe its because LMJ missed his chip block assignment.

  84. domingo says:

    Pass blocking

  85. 49er42 says:

Do we ever go for touchdowns?

  86. big niner says:

    AD is getting worked!!!

  87. bayareafanatic says:

    Davis looks pathetic

  88. Coffee's for closers says:

Another beautiful drive not ending in a touchdown. Just brilliant.

    • Spaceborn says:

Somebody needs to explain to Roman that TD’s get more points than FG’s. This is ridiculous!

  89. MontanaMan16 says:

We are a field goal kicking machine!

  90. DS94everXev says:

Good thing AS isn’t in there to get sacked.

And crappy play again in the redzone.
0/2 Up 6-3. WOW! Exciting game so far. Much better than AS’s last game on the road for sure.

  91. Nick says:

The offense has looked sluggish in the redzone.

    • IntelligentAj says:

The playcalling has been terrible down there. I really hate the “Settle for Field Goals” mentality. We have a 3rd&17 and time to take a shot at the endzone before kicking a FG so do it! Don’t call a damn running play

  92. Big Suede says:

James is a beast- The niners should be raked over the coals for not having him in during the whole year. Just ridiculous.

And anthony davis continues his worst day in the NFL

    • DClark says:

On the plus side, he will only have 4 games on the fatigue clock when the playoffs start, if he’s really as good as he looks, well what a loverly fresh weapon to win football games!!!

      • Big Suede says:

I have a feeling Jenkins is going to look really good too- when his number finally gets called.

  93. Jacktoo says:

I think we see why L. James has not been playing. Very talented, but missed his chip block on that sack and left A. Davis/CK out to dry.

  94. Spaceborn says:

    Not liking this at all!

  95. Coffee's for closers says:

What good does it do to have a mobile QB if he cant even see the defenders that are coming right in his face?

  96. Ken says:

    Our O looks pathetic…

  97. big niner says:

Other than the Bears game, CK has been getting raped by the opposition. This oline needs to pretend it Peyton manning back there. They are not playing well and haven’t for a few games now.

  98. Jason says:

2nd and 17..lets keep it on the ground. I hope Roman finds a job in the off season. I’m done with this idiots Jimmy Raye style of offense.

  99. Adam707 says:

I thought this offense was suppose to be better with CK. That may be said by everyone but it has yet to be proven on the field. Points are down, total yards are down, TOs are up. I’m all for starting Kaep if he makes the offense better but the fact is he hasn’t. Idk what is going on with the offense but it just may cost us a chance at a SB.

  100. T says:

Roman sucks! His play calling is so crappy in the RZ. Not happy.

    • NinerNation says:

Play calling looks to be about same with the run formations and shifts but the difference is we are not getting the push up front & dominating in the run game like we usually do.

  101. ribico says:

OK, lets go – 2nd half!

  102. bayareafanatic says:

BS why are u here? You are not a fan. You keep talks g about the backup. Why are u here?

    • ribico says:

Hey, just concentrate what’s happening on the field? Neither DS’s nor your comments are going to have any bearing the game.

  103. east coast niner fan says:

i thought we were going to be explosive??????????????we have been worse!!!!!!!!!!!!!at this rate it will be 24_9 good guess Grant all field goals . what happens if we lose .

  104. big niner says:

Get oof AS’s nuts people. He ain’t coming back!!!

  105. Foamingatdamouth says:

Anthony Davis is dedicating this game to former Niners Kwame Harris & Chilo Rachel!

  106. Jacktoo says:

We seem to be playing down to the level of the opponent, I put that on the quarterback and the game plan. CK needs to pick up his game in the second half.

  107. Crab15 says:

Good drive Kap…….Akers is back on track.
Moss and Crabtree lookin good. Lets get VD involved in 2nd half and Kap needs to tuck and go a few times.
No more FG’s in 2nd half. O-line can do better.

    • NinerNation says:

I Agree Crab15. We gotta do a better job in pass protection too against a very good Miami front seven. Kap has got to hit Crabs on that open smooth route Crabs ran in the red zone, Kap just barley missed him. Can’t do that down there…

  108. bayareafanatic says:

BS if you have a man on man crush on AS there are other types of classrooms for that.
This room is for 49er fans.

  109. Jack Hammer says:

Have got to get the ground game going in the 2nd half. 8 runs to 15 passes isn’t what makes this offense go.

Gotta run it so the play action will work and help slow down the pass rush.

  110. BarNone says:

They need to turn this around in the red zone or going on the road to NE and Seattle will be ugly.

  111. Big Suede says:

3 sacks- all on Anthony Davis- he gets immediately owned on EVERY SINGLE ONE.

Kaepernick rating is 103.6 and hitting 80% of his completions

And we have people here blaming the offensive failures on Kaep- ok guys!

    • ribico says:

      >>And we have people here blaming the offensive failures on Kaep

Hey, it goes with the position, right?

      Nothing Kaep can’t handle.

    • BarNone says:

Irrespective of his stats, which are ok, you’re correct – he looks fine, CK needs to get a lot better at managing a game.

Way too many timeouts to avoid delays penalties and he almost let time expire before getting off that last play of the half.

Opponents will only be getting more difficult the next two weeks.

    • NinerNation says:

Big Suede says: “3 sacks- all on Anthony Davis- he gets immediately owned on EVERY SINGLE ONE.
Kaepernick rating is 103.6 and hitting 80% of his completions
And we have people here blaming the offensive failures on Kaep- ok guys!”

People got an agenda on here (smithers vs alex haters) , just ignore it and enjoy breaking down the game like the real 49er faithful. Better protection as well as Kap hitting the type of throw he missed in the red zone to Crabs would help in the 3rd quarter. Some designed bootlegs and screens to the tailbacks underneath would be nice.

  112. I.P. Daily says:

Three out of the last four games the opponents OL has looked better than ours. what gives???

  113. Spaceborn says:

Seattle is killing AZ and their OC seems to want to do more than have close games that totally rely on their defense. Why can’t Roman?

  114. Adam707 says:

Stat of the day. Niners last 15 possessions-0tds. Pathetic!!

  115. east coast niner fan says:

no kap needs to throw it quick get the ball out. i agree run but with james more mix it up. even a screen to him make them run all over the field stretch them out a bit

  116. Coffee's for closers says:

“Colin Kaepernick has completed 12-of-15 passes for 133 yards (8.9 yard per pass). His QB rating is 103.6.”

    And ZERO touch downs!

  117. whatthe says:

lol this blog never changes just the roles have switched…
i.e. ds has become bay and bay, ds.

  118. james says:

Can people please stop using CK’s stats as evidence he is playing well and therefore justifying his starting berth ahead of Smith. His stats are almost identical to the numbers Smith put up. It’s just a distraction from the main issue. The QB switch has made no difference. The problem with our offense is,that it’s badly coached and badly put together. There has been no fluidity for 2 years, whoever is behind center. Roman must go. He is, by logical observation, the problem. The QB controversy is just irrelevant really. I feel sorry for both Alex and CK!

  119. Spaceborn says:

The break the 49ers needed! If this ends up in a FG, though, I’ll be super pissed!

  120. Spaceborn says:

Thank god for Frank Gore! Still the man for this team!

  121. steelematic says:

    A TD… Power run

  122. shawnrhod says:

there goes last time out. WTF… why????
