Garcia says the 49ers “need to go back to the drawing board” and get the ball to Vernon Davis

Jeff Garcia spoke on 95.7 The Game on Monday. Here’s what he said about Vernon Davis, who has caught three passes the last three games.

Q: Why have they not included Vernon Davis in the game plan recently?

GARCIA: That’s something that really has been missing the last couple of weeks. That’s something that really needs to be looked at, because those guys are big time playmakers for your team, those guys put a lot of pressure on linebackers, a lot of pressure on safeties.

They need to be utilized they help to move the chains. Vernon is such a great player after he gets the ball in his hands. He’s great after the catch. They need to go back to the drawing board and say: “We haven’t been real good at getting the ball to the tight ends the last few weeks. How can we get them back in the picture to utilize all our weapons?”

Both VD and DW have had drops in the last couple of games but i’m sure if the ball came their way more often they would start doing better.
They act surprised when the ball comes their way.

  2. NYniner says:

Roman is a clown!!! To have a guy like VD and the mismatch that he is , is a joke… If he’s not supremely used in foxborough they will get their doors blown off

    • gr8lake says:

I agree that VD is a mismatch. How many TEs have 4.38 speed?
He’s got to be uses. They can’t double team everybody.

    • I.P. Daily says:

      Another Jets fan…

    • jgwindsor/jaws says:

as per another article about roman visiting the pistol guru ault ….it is clear now why the QB change was made….CK learned under ault and it was only last year so it is fresh in his mind and he has the instincts for it along with a couple of physical gifts….AS may have come from a similar offense but it was 8 years ago …..

now will NE scheme against the pistol and if they do can the niners proactively readjust the pistol to work against the defensive scheme….NFL athleticism if deployed properly …i.e contain the corners….should nullify the pistol and then it becomes a matter crabtree can get open on a CK three step drop….

  3. old coach says:

I think i’m more surprised about our lack of use of VD than anything else this year. After watching how Harbaugh used the TE at Stanford and VD’s second half of the season last year i figured he would have a monster year this year. Its just hard to figure out. NY niner if you are going to call anyone a clown its not Roman its Harbaugh. I ca’nt understand why those of you who hate the 9ers O and are all over Roman give a pass to Harbaugh. If he wanted it different he would make it happen.

    • Wilson says:

I agree to some extent, Old Coach. Both should be criticized for the ultraconservative play calling that is not responsive to the game situation. But until the Rams game, it wasn’t nearly as obvious to us how bad the play calling was as it clearly is now. In Kap’s first two games, the calls were pretty good and included more passes. Harbaugh didn’t seem to tell Roman to dumb it down, as long as it was successful. But against the Rams, when the game was tight, Roman went with the prevent offense – run on first and second downs in the second half, a cowardly plan. Play not to lose – a prescription for losing. I believe that Harbaugh has chosen his offensive play caller poorly, but the incredibly unintelligent play selection against the Rams was mostly Roman.

    • Da-Hayn-49er says:

Old fart coach, If you was any coach at all you know that Roman does the play calling, I herd Harbaugh say Roman called a good game a few times, You must coach the water boy’s

      • Spaceborn says:

The thing is – and I know Harbaugh would agree because he’s said it before: The buck stops at the HC! He oversees every other coach and both the OC and DC. That’s all that coach is saying.

      • old coach says:

Thanks for the input Da-Hayn i’ll try to do better….

      • Jack Hammer says:

Come on Old Coach! Pick up your game! : )

      • old coach says:

Jack check out his spelling i feel sorry for him

      • Spaceborn says:

Jack, Wow! Great analysis on how the Pats defended Tebow on your blog. I agree that having a QB like Kaepernick that can pass is one of the things that will give the 49ers an advantage. The other is if they use LMJ often as the back behind Kaepernick that can take advantage of that split-second while the defense is trying to read the direction of the option. Could see some huge gains or even taking it to the house.

    • Ed from AZ says:

Maybe they will use him once they’re in the playoffs, like last year, once they were in the postseason, Vernon BLEW UP. Anyway, that’s the optimistic way of looking at it.

  4. Bradlee420 says:

I’m telling ya two running back in the back and two tight ends we need to do this more Vernon has been blocking more cause defenses are somehow getting to capernapski

  5. MidWestNiner says:

I couldn’t have said it better. Great job Garcia.

  6. NYniner says:

Roman calls the plays , he’s too concerned with feeding MC . VD should be option # 1

  7. 23Jordan says:

If you want the ball, catch it when it is thrown to you. These drops by the tight ends are hurting us. The last drop Vernon had was a 20 yarder that hit him in his chest and we were lucky it didnt get intercepted. Catch the ball Vernon. That being said, Vernon goes off on Sunday and has a huge game.

  8. NYniner says:

Vernon Davis on a line backer running 20 yards down the field whether its a seam or a wheel is like stealing

  9. Neal says:

It rots from the top and Roman is incompetent.

    • claude balls says:

      ???

      Isn’t Harbaugh at the top?

      • Neal says:

        C Balls,

According to JH it is Roman offense.

      • claude balls says:

Yeah, but Roman reports to and takes direction from Harbaugh. If Harbaugh didn’t approve of any aspect of the game plan, play calling, etc., he’d direct Roman to make changes.

      • old coach says:

Claude thats the point i’ve been trying to make for the last couple of weeks. I think some people wo’nt disagree with Harbaugh because others might use it against them in the whole AS\CK discussion. I take the view that our game plans and play calling are the way they are because that is the way Coach Harbaugh wants it to be. I would personally like to see Kap throw the deep and medium routes more but unless Harbaugh fails in the play off because he is to conservative winning is all that matters.

      • Neal says:

        C balls,

I can’t bear to listen to another JH press conference, he said last week the G RO, calls great game plan last week against the fins, like he always does. Talking about rolling your eyes.

      • Prime Time says:

Coach this is the problem. Are they now parts of the WCO or moving towards the Pistol or a combination of both?
My point is this late season rediscovering of our offense is counterproductive. We had an identity, it was working, why change. I guess it’s for the best but for anyone to say Kap adds something AS does not, what is it? Running the ball? Don’t like running QB’s, never have, cause no QB in NFL history has ever won being one.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Old Coach,

That’s the Harbaugh philosophy rubbing off on his assistants. It trickles all the way down to Stanford where Shaw is calling the same offense down there the same way Roman calls it here.

Ball control, pick your spots for shot plays, pound the opponent into submission. It isn’t sexy, but it works.

      • Crab15 says:

Neal (the real deal) – Aleast you didn’t write/sing a lame negative rap song about Harbaugh. LOL
        http://www.hawkblogger.com/2012/12/douchebag-harbaugh-style.html?m=1

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

Are you guys distinguishing play design from playcalling? It’s pretty clear that the playcalling comes down from Roman, with Harbaugh as the final conduit before the play reaches the QB. As for play design, Grant seems to think all the coaches work together.

If Harbaugh’s offensive philosophy is to minimize risk after getting a lead, then maybe it’s his fault Roman gets all chickensh*t so often.

      • Prime Time says:

Jack don’t tell Bay and 23 that even though I agree with you. They want the aerial show but they will settle on winning cause turning on Kap now makes them look dumb, wait, what am I saying!

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

        Crab15

Small favor, please. Don’t ever post another Seahawks-themed link on here again? Hate that team. Bunch of pathetic losers who celebrate winning the division as though that means something. Really, Crab, I mean it.

      • Crab15 says:

Syco – Since I’m new in here and you really mean it, I will really think twice before posting next time.
I hope the blog host Gary or is it Grant? I Hope I don’t get in trouble with him for my post.
Boy oh boy, I really did it this time.

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

Thanks, Crab. I threw up in my mouth when I opened that link. And then I beat my face into a bloody pulp. And then I ran through a wall. And then I stuck my hand in a blender. You might have saved my life.

    • ribico says:

wow, no more QB to throw under the bus, looks like some have to widen their arc of hate.

    • Neal says:

      Crab,

Thanks for the rap link on JH, that was pretty darn funny, even though it was lame

  10. NYniner says:

Coach harbaugh , call your own plays … Moss an Davis are waiting to haul in missiles from the rocket launcher you put under center. Roman will be running some college offense into the ground next year

  11. old coach says:

Jack i could’nt have said it better but like i said if we continue to win i wo’nt care. I’ll take a 6-3 SB win over an exciting 42-38 loss any day.

  12. Adam says:

Weird thing is that in 2010 the ‘Vernon Seam’ was there for the taking. It was about the only pass play outside of some patterns with Josh Morgan that worked.

Last year they started shifting Davis’ game to more of a down-field blocker and an added O-line pass protector.

I agree with Garcia; they need to get Vernon involved in something other than blocking.

  13. Sycophantick Romantick says:

Does anybody else get the impression that the staff is intentionally withholding firepower in order to unleash it with greater effect in the playoffs like they did last year?

  14. sledpunchingback says:

I really hope that CK7 learns what nuance means, or in football terms, “ease up on the mustard kid”. He don’t need to fire up the rockets on every pass as he was already told to chill by Gore when dumping off to him.

With that said, passes gotta get caught plain and simple. But the coverage on VD must be pretty good, because Kaption the Gunslinger hasn’t thrown many to him and Roman said lots of plays are up to QB and what he sees at line, he has option to pass or run.

    • Sycophantick Romantick says:

Yay and nay. I’ve seen several out passes this year where the DB broke on the ball like he thought he had a pick, but so badly underestimated the velocity that he was left scratching his head when Crabs or KW caught it.

  15. Nick says:

Disclaimer: I didn’t go through all posts, so apologies if somebody already mentioned this.

Since the offensive line has been struggling, the Niners have kept VD in to block more often than in the past. This partly explains the lack of production from VD. Nonetheless, utilization of the right schemes can overcome this and VD must be involved in the game plan for the Niners to be successful going forward.

  16. old coach says:

Unless its something under 10 yards to a wide open receiver Kaps velocity or penchant for very hard throws is not an issue. john elway went his whole career throwing the ball very hard. one of the oldest rules of football is if you can touch it you can catch it. if thats what is expected of h.s. kids it certainly be even more true for pros
