Geep Chryst improves 49ers red zone offense despite small hiccup

SANTA CLARA – It has come to our attention that quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst is in charge of game planning the 49ers red zone offense every week.

The 49ers have scored touchdowns on 56 percent of their red zone trips this season – 11th best in the NFL, and 16 percent better than their red zone TD percentage last season – 40 percent.

But the last two weeks, the offense has scored touchdowns in three-of-seven red zone trips – 42 percent, very close to last season’s rate.

What’s more, Colin Kaepernick has only thrown the ball into the end zone one time the last two games – the fade to Randy Moss in New Orleans that was almost intercepted.

On the other hand, the 49ers have run the ball in the red zone 11 times the last two weeks.

Against the Bears a few weeks ago, Kaepernick showed a Brett-Favre-like ability to extend red zone plays and fire passes into tight windows in the end zone for touchdowns, but the 49ers red zone offense has been extremely conservative since that game. They haven’t let Kaepernick throw it past the goal line.

Geep Chryst should install at least a half-dozen play action passes to Vernon Davis in the red zone game plan this week, and Greg Roman and Jim Harbaugh should let Kaepernick fire it into the end zone more often.

What do you think the 49ers should do to get their red zone offense back on track?

In general, Chryst is showing improvement in his second season as the 49ers red zone coordinator, but as Bruce Bochy would say, “he’s having a small hiccup.”

  1. Prime Time says:

Grant you act like Vernon Davis is illusive in getting open. He is fast but he is also rigid in his breaks, not a leaper and as we have seen, not that great of hands.

    • Jack Hammer says:

Great straight line speed, but poor short area burst. He doesn’t get much YAC unless he is already running away from the defender.

      • Prime Time says:

This is why he is not an ideal red zone option. You are right, good break away speed and best utilized in the seam but he is not dynamic or illusive in getting open whatsoever. Especially in tight quarters.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Exactly. That’s why a big body guy like CFleener could have complemented him in the RZ and could have been used rather than sitting for three fourths of the year.

      • Jack Hammer says:

The AJ era starts Sunday. Get your popcorn ready!

      • Prime Time says:

Hof what about a big bodied WR like Dwayne Bowe? Fast physical and can jump. This what you need in the red zone!

      • Grimey9er says:

His name is Crabtree throw him the ball.

      • Prime Time says:

Grime before Alex got hurt Crabtree was getting lots of touches and looked like he was comin into his own. He is now a mirage again like Moss and Vernon.

      • Grimey9er says:

7 for 101 vs Rams. He’s still there.

      • Prime Time says:

Grime Bears game, 3 catches 31 yards. NO 3 catches for 26 yards, Rams 7 for 101. 1 TD in 3.5 games with CK. That’s not enough touches or production from your #1 WR.

      • Jack Hammer says:

He had a total of 4 in 8 1/2 games with Alex. 3 of those coming in the Arizona game and 1 against St Louis. That gave him and Alex a total of 1 through the first 7 games.

      • Jack Hammer says:

***should read 2 against Arizona and 1 against St Louis***

      • Prime Time says:

        Jack:
        GB 7 for 76
        DET 6 for 67
        Min 6 for 40
        NYJ 2 for 15
        BUF 6 for 113
        NYG 3 for 26
        SEA 4 for 31
        AZ 5 for 72

Outside of these numbers he was being targeted more on 3rd down and overall in general. It was a chemistry growing. I don’t see that with CK.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Prime,

Crabtree is primarily an underneath receiver, and in CK’s first 2 starts he was able to go to the second level more often. The Rams played soft taking away those throws and guess what, Crabtree reappeared.

  2. Neal says:

    Grant,

Do you know this is the norm in running a offense, having 3 guys involved in the game plans? I don’t see Mike Shanahan and Mike Holmgren in dividing this by 3 people, when they were here.

    • Prime Time says:

Did you fail high school English or what?

      • Neal says:

Prime Slime Axel Foley Welcher, No I have never failed English, but it does not take a Einstein, that you failed in (( L I F E )) LMAO HAHAHAHAHAHHA oh that was sweet. Now I know what AS stands for, it stands for Ass Snifer because you love to be up my ass on every time I post. Your such a tool and a loser.

      • Prime Time says:

Neal ask Santa for the entire collection of Hooked on Phonics. You need all the help you can get.

      • Neal says:

Ask Mommy Prime to buy you a life coach, you need help in life.

      • Prime Time says:

Will do but at least I won’t look stupid like you!

      • Nick says:

        Neal
It’s sometimes best to just ignore the troll Axel Primate Foley. But that was hilarious.

      • Neal says:

Thanks Nick, Do you think anyone will adopt Primate so he can find a home before Christmas time? I heard he was adopted at the shelter a few times but they keep returning him back to the pound, he has one last chance, if he gets adopted and the owners return him, they will have to put him down.

      • Prime Time says:

What did I tell you last night? Pudding meet proof!

    • Brotha Tuna says:

I think you’re wrong on this one, Neal. Think back to the Packers heyday. Holmgren the offensive minded coach, very hands-on, but on his staff he’s got Gruden and Andy Reid and Mooch. All those guys have talked about collaborating together. Then Walsh developing the scripted plays, but with each OC the system tweaked a little. Holmgren left his imprint, then Shanahan tweaked it even more. I think there’s plenty of teamwork amongst coaches on most staffs; maybe Singletary/Raye, not so much.

      • Neal says:

        Brotha,

Perhaps you are correct, this makes me feel that our our coaches are inadequate, compared to what these teams had. Don’t see Roman or Mortin being a successful head coach.

      • Prime Time says:

We win 22 games over a year and half, we need a QB change. Now we have inadequate coaches. What’s next?
All you do Neal is bioch! No value with any insight into football or football conversation. Just admit you are 12 yearsold and that will explain everything. Otherwise if you are indeed an a adult and your posts are written by you as an adult, you should just pack it in and read the comments. That’s it!

      • Brotha Tuna says:

        @ Neal
I will agree I put up a heavy standard of comparison! LOL Actually, I don’t have that much hesitation about Roman. I don’t know enough about Morton. I also think that Harbaugh’s system is soooooo controlled and conservative that its hard to compare to BW-era teams.

      • Neal says:

        Slime Welcher,

Are you that thick, are you a moron and a jerk, yes you are. Coach of the year made that decision, not the people on this blog. Look at it this way , you have Andrew Luck and now you have to settle for Alex Smith, its is like comparing Shakira to Roseanne Barr hahahah . I would think Harbaugh might know a thing or two about Quarterbacking unlike you and your older sister BS. We won inspite of Alex Smith, not because of him. AS played in 4 miserable games this year. But you are a AS fan, not a Niner fan, why don’t you leave this blog if you don’t like the way the Coach of the year makes decisions.

      • Prime Time says:

Plenty of coaches of the year including greats like Walsh and Parcells made bad decisions Neal.
Kinda like whatever alien form made the decision to conceive you!

      • Neal says:

Whatever Slime. Your nothing but a pinhead on here. Most people are here compare you to Alex Smith, your both flawed and limited LMAO !!!

      • Prime Time says:

I just ran the out and up on you Neal and left you holding your jock strap while I scored a touchdown!
        Burnt!

      • Neal says:

Prime Slime Randy Axel Foley Welcher.,your jock strap consists of a 1/2 a peanut shell and a rubber band. Lol

      • msclemons67 says:

C’mon Brotha, I’m sure there was collaboration on the Singletary/Raye staff.

“Let’s have Gore run into the right guard’s butt.”
“No, I think the left guard’s butt would be better.”
“Compromise, we’ll have him run it into the center’s butt.”
        “Brilliant!”

  3. LenDeez says:

Prime, do you do anything besides troll Grants posts and call people out for their grammatical errors?

    • Prime Time says:

Who are you rookie? You have been on here once and claim to know my agenda? GTF outta here junior!

      • Sycophantick Romantick says:

Oh boy!!! Look out everyone! Primordial Ooze is calling the shots tonight! Be on your toes, men…

  4. LenDeez says:

lol rookie? oh my bad i didnt realise there was a grant cohn heirarchy.

  5. LenDeez says:

considering you spelt elusive wrong it looks like we all suck at spelling

    • Randy says:

don’t you have anything better to do Len?This is a 49er blog…how about talking niner football instead of attacking Prime…

      • angusinCanada says:

        Lol.
Prime started it Randy, and then he insulted Len’s grammar skills, shortly after posting a grade school level spelling error.

  6. LenDeez says:

i cant even get my own recognition? I’m deemed a plant right away!? you guys are tough on rookies! Now i know how Aj Jenkins feels.

    • Randy says:

What in the world do you need recognition for?Calling out Prime?I don’t recall him ever saying anything negative towards you…again, let’s talk Niner football…

    • Prime Time says:

Just a bad start to the blog blowing A$$ my way!

      • Randy says:

        I was wrong…Len is clearly Neal’s half brother..I wonder who’s smarter..

      • Neal says:

hey Randy I am still waiting for my Whopper. lol

      • Randy says:

Neal…Children are to be seen and not heard…it’s well past your bedtime little boy…

      • Neal says:

        Randy, need new material.

      • Randy says:

but it’s all a child like you can understand Neal…new material would just confuse your tiny, tiny little brain..now Mommy’s calling you again..

      • Prime Time says:

Right after the Bernie comment you used all of last year and this year!

      • Neal says:

        Hey Randy,

You kind of make me laugh, that was funny. Good one, although Mommy is 3000 miles away. Still waiting for that whopper

      • Randy says:

Neal…I can’t give you a whopper…I’m currently warming up some milk for your bottle..I’m sure Mommy calls her stupid little baby every night to make sure he understands why he so “different” from everybody else

      • Prime Time says:

Neal is just a precious little boy!

      • Neal says:

Randy, your the stupid one, working at Burger king, no motivation. Prime the precious one is AS, not me Randy got to be another prime axel double poster.

      • Prime Time says:

Neal you have now been adopted as the new “Precious” one cause you are special. Special needs that is!

      • Randy says:

Neal…you are done…nobody takes you seriously..you always fall back on the same tired joke..now take your ball and go home little boy…come back when you have something intelligent to say…oh,wait..then you’ll never come back

      • bayareafanatic says:

Randy Who are u? Talk about new. Pipe down. Unless you are one of primes multiple names. He’s got no pride so he doesn’t care.

  7. Brodie2Washington says:

“What do you think the 49ers should do to get their red zone offense back on track?”

I’m not sure but here are some ideas… (Sorry if I’m stating the obvious here…)
    - Avoid slow developing plays that too often result in negative yardage plays and penalties
    - Get Brandon Jacobs into the flow of the game
    - Coach all receivers to run patterns along the back line of the end zone if the initial pattern is covered to take advantage of Kaepernick’s ability to buy time with his feet.
    - Feature Randy Moss more, so he and Kaepernick can play above the shoulder pad level.
    - Seal off line penetration better. The 49ers have big, athletic O-linemen that can run very well and get to the second level, but on short yardage situations there always seems to be defenders getting a free path to Gore.
    - Occasionally forget all those line shifts and run quick counts. (Stabler was a master at that) Break the huddle, line up and hike on the count of 1. Simple off tackle or play action plays work.
    - CK7 bootlegs, fake bootlegs and run options… of course.
    - AJ Jenkins on shallow drag routes in front of the end zone. He was good at those in college.

    • Razoreater says:

Exactly, those routes along the line in the back of the endzone were Mr. Walsh stapes.

    • Adam says:

      Good post, Brodie.

Too much arguing around here lately. Good to see a football post.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Good post. Where we disagree is about RM. I keep hearing people on hear saying to target him more. He’s not done much to suggest he is the RM of old. Our expectations of him are too high. He was out of the league last year and a mere shadow of himself in 2010. I’m not expecting much of him and especially for a run-centric team to feature him anytime soon.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        *on here*

        need edit please

      • Neal says:

I would think if Brady or Brees were the QB, he would of gotten more opportunities.

      • Prime Time says:

Oh Neal so now it’s the QB again? You are as useless as they come? Why do you bother?

      • Neal says:

All you discuss Prime is how wonderful AS is and how you are now the NEW hater of Kaep and Harbaugh, you and your older sister BS, know next to nothing

      • Adam says:

Of course there was a discussion we had a few months back that maybe Moss was a kind of decoy. Soften up the middle of the field a bit, keep the DBs honest.

        Hard to say.

      • Prime Time says:

Adam Moss has been a non factor overall. That could be age, play calling or overall fit in the offense.
Everything about our offense goes thru our running game. Since CK, our identity has shifted. Maybe it will be more geared towards his skill set and capabilities. If so great, but the timing of it makes me skeptical.

    • msclemons67 says:

“- Occasionally forget all those line shifts and run quick counts. (Stabler was a master at that) Break the huddle, line up and hike on the count of 1. Simple off tackle or play action plays work.”

I like this idea. Should catch a defense napping once in a while.

  8. Razoreater says:

You’ve got to use your imagination when you are down inside the twenty yard line. I’d try four wide receivers and spread them out. I’d try roll out option run or pass with multiple receivers looking to get the ball. The amount of time Kaepernick can extend should be more than enough to find an open receiver, whether it’s Mr. Crabs, Moss, Jenkins , Davis or James.

  9. LenDeez says:

my favrorite play call so far was the fade to moss against NO. I know thats going to connect for a td soon. considering harbaughs tendacy to want everything down to a 1% competitive advantage and evidence from last year, the 49ers playbook nuggets are beijg saved for the play offs.

    • Randy says:

I agree Len..but Harbaugh might shy away from that play again until Kaep shows he can make that pass…only a great play by Moss saved a pick

  10. LenDeez says:

*being…sorry prime. small buttons and a bumpy bus.

  11. LenDeez says:

yeah def not a great thrown ball. love the play by moss to break that up even if it would have drawn a penalty. with moss being the biggest target we have i hope theyre workin on that connection because if they get that down to a T itll be pretty hard to defend and can almost be used every redzone posession.

    • Randy says:

again I agree…but I wonder if Moss has the leaping ability anymore..I’m not sure, but I think we can count on one hand how many times that play has been called this season…and I don’t believe it’s been sucessful..I could be wrong

  12. LenDeez says:

it hasnt, i suppose my desire for the fade to be executed is “low hanging fruit” because it seems so simple.

    • Randy says:

Yeah…especially when we watch so many other teams perform it so well..we may not have that type of receiver..Vernon not a great jumper..Kyle is a slot guy…Manningham a slant, down field guy..possibly Crabs, but he always seems a play away from a hurt foot(having good year though)..AJ not a big guy..more like Kyle

  13. LenDeez says:

now that i think about it, funny enough the monday night game against arizona had a successful fade. and of course the qb that threw it is on the bench. but crabtree would probably be the best target for that considering his hand strength. hes considerably bigger this year too. so who knows. i think the loss of hunter was a huge blow to the redzone offense. hopefully L.James can take that roll.

    • Randy says:

I hope James plays…his speed on screens and checkdowns could really hurt a team trying to blitz Kap all day long…imagine had they done that against the Rams..

  14. Jack Hammer says:

SMH, 50 responses to this post and about 10 of them are about football.

    • Randy says:

that’s because Neal hates giving up..gotta hand it to him,he’s a glutton for punishment

      • Prime Time says:

No Randy, he is just the Precious one!

      • Randy says:

you know what is funny Prime?Where are all of Neal’s friends like Bay,23Jordan,etc..?Oh,they don’t like him either!!!

      • Neal says:

Randy I know this place is your social life, and you have only online friends, I actually have real friends.

Hey Grant, this place was so much better last weekend when you sent Prime for a time out, hoping it was permanent.. Guess Not

      • bayareafanatic says:

Randy hang with trash you are trash. And prime is trash.

      • Prime Time says:

Bay do you consider Neal a friend?

      • Randy says:

Still waiting for you to say something intelligent Neal…guess it’s going to be a long wait

      • Prime Time says:

Neal lets look at your last 10 posts versus mine and see who knows more about football or adds more to the blog? Do you wanna bet who looks more incompetent?

      • Randy says:

I’m sorry Neal!!!It’s Bay to the rescue for you!!!Bay is so smart…he’s going to show me!!!The game is afoot!!!

  15. drsgrosse says:

What should they do to get the RZ Offense back on track? Teach Delanie Walker how to catch. That would make them 4 for 7, right on the season average.

BTW, Grant, I’m sure it was just a typo, but 56% is a 40% improvement on last year’s 40% RZ rate, not a 16% improvement.

  16. undercenter says:

The QB may have changed, but the team is still the same. We’re still looking for wins, and that always seems to a be a struggle. Our team is struggling right now, but it is still better then two years ago. If this is true that we have allocated different parts of the offense to three different coaches, then it becomes understandable why the offense looks disjointed at times. I have often wondered why the Niners could move the ball between the 20′s then suddenly look completly different in the red zone. That explains a lot. I not sure if this is a good coaching technique or not, at this point I am not impressed.

    • Jack Hammer says:

1 loss in 7 weeks constitutes a team struggling?

      • undercenter says:

They were wins Jack and thats what they play for. I consider the tie a loss, you probably dont. There have been only two games this year where the offense and defense played well, Cards and Bears. I see a struggle in most of the other wins. Offense putting up 30 points in two games to me is struggling. Pretty much IMO the whole season has been a struggle. Maybe my expectation were probably too high too begin with.

      • Jack Hammer says:

2nd best record in the conference, 2nd best point differential in the league. It sure is a struggle…

      • Hoferfan67 says:

After the next 4 games we can re-evaluate. It hasn’t been easy and the team isn’t overpowering.

      • undercenter says:

2nd best in the conferencing and descending, point differential mean squat too many variables for that to have much meaning.

      • Prime Time says:

Jack I appreciate the optimism but if you cannot see a different team since the bye week, then there is not much to say.
Penalties, stalled running game, bad play calling, lockerroom leaks, struggling kicker, and controversy and distractions surrounding the team. Yeah everything looks good and will work itself out right?

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Prime,

It’s the same team they had going into the bye. They are consistent. Win 2 lose, been that way thru all 12 games.

The biggest issue right now on this board is the Smith backers are pissed, so instead is looking for positives like they did during the first half they are looking for negatives.

They are going to beat Miami on Sunday, and then it will be 2 tough December road games that everyone said would be tough back when the schedule was announced followed by an easy finale at home.

        Bring ‘em on!

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Jack, if things are all positive, then it’s SB and no excuses. Anything short is a failure.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Who said that wasn’t the case Hofer?

My expectations haven’t changed, have yours?

      • undercenter says:

Thats not entirly true Jack, I have given CK his just due. I noted the great game he had against the bears. I noted a win in the Super Dome is no simple feat, I noted two really nice drives CK had in this last Ram game. I also stated CK was not the reason for the loss. I want CK to succede, if he is then the Niners are winnings. Thats a good thing.

      • Prime Time says:

It has nothing to do with Smith supporters. It has everything to do with the timing of that move, the running game stalled, the penalties, the surrounding attention and distraction of the switch, players speaking out, and an offense that is trying to find itself. All concerns that are legit and I’m not saying them cause I’m a Smith fan, they are real and happening. And they are all happening at the worst point of the season.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

There was a QB change and not a major difference in productivity. Now there are more game changing turnovers. I expect a win over Mia but the next three games will tell us if the move was a good one.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Players have been speaking out all season, that is nothing new. Possibly the costliest penalty in the Rams game was the unnecessary roughness call on Goldson that gave them a free 15 yards and put then in field goal range. That had nothing to do with the switch.

I acknowledge that things are a little off, but by the way you and a few others have been posting the last 3 weeks you would think Harbaugh and staff are among the worst coaches in the league and this team has no chance.

      • Prime Time says:

Jack all offseason we heard that if Smith hits KW in the championship game in the 1st half we win. Well if CK does not gift the Rams 10 pts, Goldson penalty is irrelevant and we win right? See my point?
What was suppose to be an added element to make our offense more dynamic has now resulted in the opposite.

      • undercenter says:

        Jack

We are talking football with a cival tongue – thats a good thing :)

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Prime,

I agree with that. I also like how he responded by taking the team right back down the field and putting them in position to win, with the throw to Crabtree, his scramble, and a perfect TD pass to Walker that was dropped.

      • Prime Time says:

Yes there is no denying CK fight and talent however with 4 mins left that game was over before the fumble.
Anyways, the kid is in a difficult spot. All I’m saying is there was a better way to make the transition. Now everything is moving away from what was working and for what? Ego!

      • 23jordan/ says:

        Prime,

Better way to make the transition?? How would you know. Really. Man get the hell over it. Stop crying like a child every day. When are you going to start healing? Don’t you get it? Alex smith is over. Grow up. There had to be a better was of transitioning? Why you you tell us how it should’ve been done.

      • Prime Time says:

23hater I would try to answer that question if it was written in some form of English I could understand. Unfortunately your spelling and grammar is atrocious.
Why are all you haters so pitiful at puttin together simple sentences?

      • bayareafanatic says:

Jordan you hit the nail on the head. This group thinks they are so smart. When Smith got benched they didn’t know how to react. And they still dont.
They cry every day. Like freaking children. Still throwing their twisted logic around. And now they turn on the coach too. PATHETIC. And they don’t care. Sad really.

“The biggest issue right now on this board is the Smith backers are pissed, so instead is looking for positives like they did during the first half they are looking for negatives”.
I’m just wondering if it could be looked at like this…

The biggest issue right now on this board are the Smith haters are happy. So instead of looking at negatives like they did in the first half, they are looking for positives.
        Just saying!
I believe LMJ is the key to the remainder of the season. If he can’t fill the void left by KH, it may not matter who the qb is. I think he’s gonna have a coming out party! Defenses are gonna have something new to worry about!

      • msclemons67 says:

The team was fine after a bad loss to the Vikings that featured a bad QB performance.

The team was fine after a loss to the Giants that featured an abysmal QB performance.

The sky is falling, the coach is an idiotic ego-maniac, the 49ers will suck forever after a loss to the Rams featuring a bad QB performance.

What is the one difference in these three scenarios?

      • ribico says:

        >>but by the way you and a few others have been posting the last 3 weeks you would think Harbaugh and staff are among the worst coaches in the league

        Jack, consider Grant’s recent topics:

Harbaugh: “Greg Roman is the play caller.”

Roman on his play calling against the Rams: “If we win the game, I generally think it’s good.”

49ers offense not really Greg Roman’s

Lorenzo Neal to Harbaugh and Roman: “You have to believe you can get Vernon Davis involved.”

An easy way for Greg Roman to improve

Harbaugh: “The play we called in the huddle was a loser and we didn’t have an audible.”

        And polls:

Will Greg Roman get out-coached against the Dolphins?

Does John Morton do a good job with the 49ers pass game?

All either directly or backhandedly critical of Harbaugh and staff. And the pace is picking up after the QB change that so far has not produced the expected and predicted increased offensive output. Obviously, as a drumbeat for the change, Grant cannot be critical of CK or Harbaugh’s decision to play him, so blame has to be spread elsewhere. And if posters pick on that and add their own critical commentary, it’s all par for the course that was set up.

      • Prime Time says:

        Well said Ribico!
The Dolphins won’t be easy but a win nonetheless. Then we will see over the next 3 games if the switch was the right one.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Ribico,

Thank you for the breakdown. It doesn’t change my opinion based on the fact that most of those doing the most complaining are also the ones who were ripping Kaepernick’s performance in NO, which happened to come before those posts from Grant that you reference.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Under, you are correct, this team is struggling.

      • Prime Time says:

The team is not struggling, the offense is.

      • undercenter says:

Prime the defense and special teams have struggled and have been inconsistant also.

      • Prime Time says:

Under if not for the defense we lose against the Saints and Rams both times.

      • undercenter says:

True Prime, but defense didnt look good at the Vikes or the Giants and when they even played their best game against the Rams they still could not get a stop on two occasions when the Niners really needed them. The Niners as a team has struggled pretty much all year. D played lights out against the Rams and were damn good against the Saints no doubt.

      • Neal says:

Niners offense not very good against Viking , Giants, Jets and Hawks, oh wait CK was not playing then. I really think it is Roman to mostly blame, playing calling is awful.

      • Neal says:

They put a nice string together of wins, all of this will be forgotten.

      • Jack Hammer says:

“They put a nice string together of wins, all of this will be forgotten.”

        That’s exactly right.

      • Prime Time says:

And if they fail to win the division or are one and done in the playoffs then what? Next year?

      • undercenter says:

Neal Of course it will, and I hope it happens. Got some tough games ahead we shall shortly find out. Wins are a cure all for anything.

      • Jack Hammer says:

“And if they fail to win the division or are one and done in the playoffs then what? Next year?”

There will be plenty of questions for Harbaugh to answer, and a lot of frustration. But that would have been the case anyway. Now there is just another piece of fruit to grab onto.

      • Hoferfan67 says:

“But that would have been the case anyway”

Not to the same extent. He won’t get off easy and he shouldn’t. The honeymoon will officially be over.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        It already is….

      • Hoferfan67 says:

        Not quite.

      • Prime Time says:

Easily avoided Jack. CK starts week one in 2013, has the entire season to grow, develop and be the leader.
The way JH did it this year caused controversy, harsh feelings and at a point of the season where you need to be polishing, not repairing.

      • Neal says:

I don’t see it as doom and gloom, although either way you lose with the Smithers. They are a whiny miserable sour grapes group, if the Niners win the Lombardi trophy they will say AS could of lead them to the promise land too, and if we lose, all they will say I told you so. Now that being said I could careless what the Smith tea party group will react, they are the true haters, they want Kaep to fail and they hate JH. They are a true pity group.

      • Prime Time says:

If you feel that way Neal then shut your mouth and stay off the thread. You are adding nothing and no one cares, maybe Jack so address it to him directly moron!

      • Jack Hammer says:

Harbaugh must have felt this gives them the best chance to do it now. Like you used to say to those ripping Harbaugh for bringing back Smith, “Are you now smarter than last years NFL coach of the year? Maybe you should send in a resume.” ; )

      • Neal says:

Prime Slime Axel Foley Welcher, for someone who thinks I add nothing to this thread, you certainly need to repond to evey post I make, what a matter you don’t have any discipline, oh yea you said you will be off this blog for two weeks and you could not do that Primate with your multiple profiles. Kaep 7.1 Adjusted Yards per pass — Best in NFL.
    Smith 5.6 (10th)

    Kaep yards per rush: 7.5.
    Smith 4.6.

Running Backs and receiver runs with each QB in the game:
Kaep: 4.0 yards per carry (28th in NFL)
    Smith: 5.6 (1st).

    Plays per game per QB:
    Kaep: 54
    Smith: 60
(NB: Ram games both count as 1.25 games)

    Offensive Points per game:
    Kaep: 18.8 (28th)
    Smith: 22.5 (17th)

For 2012, through 12 games, The Niners appear to be a better team with Smith at QB.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

      DRS,

Interesting facts. This is the problem I had/have with the switch. We just haven’t see the explosiveness everyone endorsing it suggested the change would present. I believe the 9ers easily handle Mia, but I’m not feeling good about the last three games.

      • bayareafanatic says:

There you go again, telling people what to do. I’m not a proponent of changing course this late in the year. It may work it may not. The jury is still out. I’ll continue to root for a win each and every week, but it doesn’t mean I won’t be critical. I’ve learned quite a bit about being critical from you over the last three years. You’ll have to let me know how I’m doing!

      • Prime Time says:

Rib, the other one was “just telling it like it is”

Apparently now that’s just negative talk.

    • Jack Hammer says:

      drs,

Thanks for the numbers. Regarding the points per game. If you go back and look at the point totals throughout the season I think you will notice that Smith’s point totals are helped out by some big games early in the season. This is something to look for as the number of games for each qb starts to even out.

You may have already looked at this, but here is a breakdown from Sando on Smith’s performance.

Regarding the run totals being down. My best guess is that he is not doing as good a job as Smith was in getting into the correct play. That makes some sense given Smith having played a full 16 games last year, and most of the first 8+ this year, and Kaepernick only having 3+ now under his belt.

  18. tkamB says:

Saw this on ESPN and thought it was interesting:
Average pass length last three games for CK
    Week 11 vs Bears: 10.2
    Week 12 vs Saints: 7.4
    Week 13 vs Rams: 5.8

Alex Smith’s average for the season was 7.5. For all the talk about Harbaugh/Roman unleashing the downfield passing attack with CK, doesn’t seem like its actually translated to the games.

    • msclemons67 says:

The reigning coach of the year prefers Kaepernick to your guy.

I’m sure you know more than Harbaugh, though.

      • tkamB says:

I don’t think I said I know more than Harbaugh but let me check again… Nope didn’t see it. I didn’t even suggest Smith should be back as the starter, or its Kaepernick’s fault, or anything of the sort. All I said is that the downfield passing attack that Harbaugh/Roman supposedly wanted hasn’t materialized. But hey maybe what I said isn’t that important, is it the way that I typed it that’s the problem? If so I apologize if my keystrokes gave off the wrong impression.

      • ribico says:

        >>The reigning coach of the year

Coach of the year last year. Earned while he was playing what some have termed the 7 year bust. Can our new wunderkind earn him that honor this year? TBD.

    • drsgrosse says:

Yes, tkam, I noticed that also. As Harbaugh would say, it’s not all arrows up for Kaep as this year’s starter.

It’s disappointing that Bayarea got in so quickly under my post of the Kaep v Smith numbers. I was hoping for an intelligent discussion and for somebody to come up with a factual way out of the woods for us.

Then msc gets in with another of his moronic comments. Clemons: you think Harbaugh is not aware of what the stats show? He knew this stuff well before the stat lines were completed.

The fact remains: so far, the Niners are a better team with Smith at QB. I am hoping that Kaep can change that starting tomorrow, but I’m a Niner fan much more that I am a Kaep or Smith fan. I want the best QB in there.

      • bayareafanatic says:

How about you just stand behind the team and the best QB that Harbaugh picks to lead the team.

      • ribico says:

Nice try, drsgrosse, a worthy effort, but you’re probably spitting into the wind.

  20. Sean in Canada says:

A stat I heard Pat Kirwan mention yesterday afternoon regarding AS and CK.
AS has thrown a td pass once for every 17 passes.
Ck has thrown a td pass once for every 32 passes.
I think it’s too small a sample size and way too early to panic, but just found it interesting. CK needs a little time to get in a groove, unfortunately with only 4 games left it leaves little room for error.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

“AS has thrown a td pass once for every 17 passes.”
“Ck has thrown a td pass once for every 32 passes.”

Add to the DRS list and the MSando numbers when pass rushing 5, and this science project that was suppose to yield explosive plays all over the field still doesn’t seem to be working.

      • Prime Time says:

Little room for error Sean? How about none with a tough MIA defense coming up, SEA looking for revenge at home, NE maybe the best team in the AFC an a Cards team that is always a battle.
Learning on the fly does not apply in December. You need to be gunning, not aiming.

      • Jack Hammer says:

That depends on your definition of explosive….

      • Sam B says:

Explosive to me meant taking the heat off the running game. That has not happened.

      • Grimey9er says:

Kap also has 4 rushing tds.

      • Sean in Canada says:

Grimey, the rushing TD’s was not mentioned but is a good point.
Prime, I agree it’s a little late in the season to be making a big change at the QB position but as I’m just a dude with my rear firmly planted on the couch on gameday, I’ll roll with the decision Harbaugh makes and cheer as loud as the family will tolerate(perhaps a little more). I don’t think Harbaugh would’ve just made the change just because. He gets the benefit of the doubt from me that there is a method to his madness.

  21. bayareafanatic says:

Let me simplify the Harbaugh decision process for you guys. Something in that Vikings loss affected JH’s confidence in Smith. His rating that game 81.1

The following game against the Jets you saw a pattern begin. Colin Kaepernick got six snaps. The most eye opening stat was a deep ball thrown down field to Randy Moss. It was a message from the coach to Smith to open it up. Smith did not get the message.
In the Jets game there were several stars. Smith was not one of them. Kaepernick scored a TD, so did the running backs and the defense. Smith rating that game 78.1

Smith followed up with his best game of the year against a Buffalo team that laid down. A Buffalo team that had given up 90 points in 8 quarters. Kaepernick received five more touches in this game and once again scored a TD.

The following week was HUGE measuring stick home game against the super bowl champion NY Giants. A hyped up rematch. Smith failed to score, looked lost and scared in the pocket all afternoon. The result was a 26-3 blowout. His rating 43.1
Take note that Kaepernick was inserted and saw his most significant playing time. 13 snaps. His rating 98.5
It was during this game that the coach toyed with the decision to transition QB’s. He was just looking for an opportunity.

Harbaugh wanted to see how Smith would respond the following week against a tough divisional opponent at home the Seahawks. Smith’s response was a lackluster 140 yard effort in which he also turned the ball over. While they won, his rating was 74.5
Harbaugh had heard from the media that inserting CK was “ruining” the flow of the game. So he experimented with not inserting CK into this game. The results for Smith were the same. Harbaugh needed a spark and the decision had been made.
Harbaugh based his decision not by the Arizona game or the Buffalo game, but instead by judging performances against playoff caliber teams.
In those four games Smith averaged
Aver Rating 69.1 he had (1) TD and (1) Int. Against playoff caliber teams that meant Smith would take an average of .25 TD’s and a QB rating of 69.1 into the playoffs. THAT IS HOW HARBAUGH MADE HIS DECISION. And when you compare Kaepernick, use those stats in your comparison……

    • bayareafanatic says:

I’m sorry let me be more clear. When AS played the
      VIKINGS
      JETS
      GIANTS
      SEAHAWKS
He had 1 TD TOTAL for all 4 games.

      • Randy says:

and you know all of this because you had coffee this morning with Harbaugh?

      • Prime Time says:

Why don’t you just stay down? You have no clue what you are talking about. Rocket, Claude, or Ribico will be here shortly to put you back in your place and then you will start name calling and looking like the loser you are.
When and if the Niners get to the SB you can talk. For now, keep that foot firmly planted in that hair lip of yours!

      • ribico says:

Don’t you know Bay can see into the eyes of the quarterback from his seats at the ‘Stick? From the upper deck he can see fear or confidence in those eyes. What makes you think he can’t be inside the mind of Harbaugh from his position at his computer?

      • Prime Time says:

No Randy, Neal and bay had coffee with one another and came up with this over group therapy!

      • bayareafanatic says:

Instead of name calling look at the info I posted. Does it not make sense? Does the end result not tell you anything?
I know you guys want to go down with the ship, but you cannot ignore what is right in front of you and the end result.

      • Neal says:

        Prime Time=Axel Foley = Randy= Triple poster

      • ribico says:

        >>Harbaugh based his decision not by the Arizona game or the Buffalo game, but instead by judging performances against playoff caliber teams.

Either your hypothesis fails or Harbaugh’s judgement is lacking when one takes into account performances against Green Bay (20/26, 2 TDs, no INTS, first win in Lambeau in 100 years) and Detroit (20/31, 2 TDs, no INTS) the other playoff-type teams you conveniently ignored. Yes, when we played Detroit, they were absolutely considered that.

Given those two options, Bay’s hypothesis or Harbaugh’s judgement, guess what I’m going to go with.

But I’m glad to see you posting something you’ve given at least a little thought to.

      • Jack Hammer says:

“when we played Detroit, they were absolutely considered that”

And that early season assumption has been proven incorrect.

      • ribico says:

Jack, then what teams have the Niners played do you consider “playoff caliber”? As this season has played out?

I say Packers. Though that was in doubt until midseason, when they finally started to win again.

I say Giants. Only as they are defending champs until someone else is, as they are in danger of missing the playoffs entirely if they don’t rediscover the hot hand.

I say Chicago. Still not sold on them, as one dimensional as they are.

That’s it. 2 wins, 1 loss. And not much evidence on how our team will do against “playoff caliber” teams, no matter who the QB is. Pats game will hopefully clear the air some.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Rib,
I’ll give you GB but Detroit. Really? They have a .333 winning percentage and will fire their coach end of season.

      • ribico says:

Then I pose the same question to you, Bay, as I did to Jack.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Ribico,

Those 3, and you have to add in Seattle since they are currently a wildcard team.

      • bayareafanatic says:

The teams I mentioned that Smith struggled against were all in the top 13. I believe that Harbaugh anticipates those types of defenses would be in the playoffs.

      • ribico says:

        >>Seattle

A tough win featuring our running attack, which demolished them. I frankly don’t see our ground game approaching those levels from here on out. And when we play them again half of their secondary will be suspended, right? It didn’t and still won’t give us much evidence on how we play that particular playoff caliber team, no matter the QB.

      • Prime Time says:

Now we are picking teams that we played early in the season as legit or not? Jack said AZ in MNF was not a barometer game after the fact. But everyone before the game said it would be another difficult test against a good defense. What happened? Dominated.
4 weeks ago the Giants were done, then they were back with a big win against the Pack. Same with Pitt. SB contenders to awful now back in it.
Point is you cannot pick certain games throughout the year to make any argument because its evolving throughout the year. Teams play well, then falter.

Dec is when you need to get hot. Polish your offense and get it unified. Ours is the complete opposite. Guess why that is?

      • ribico says:

The way I see it, it comes down to winning out to remain in the playoff/bye hunt. And then the Pats game as a glimpse on how we will do once we get to the playoffs. NE will be battling for positioning as well so they won’t be dogging it.

      • Prime Time says:

Rib we need to win the division but the problem is our schedule is a lot tougher than SEA. They play 3 of their 4 at home. We might be a wild card team having to host GB, NY or the Pack. How fun!

      • Nick says:

        Well said Bay

    • Jack Hammer says:

      Bay,

All of that aside, Harbaugh does not make a switch if not for Smith getting injured.

I think that what happened is Harbaugh was looking at having a true open competition in training camp in 2013, but the injury forced them to give Kaepernick the start against Chicago. Kaepernick then went out and showed the coaches that he is as good as Smith right now. He backed that up by playing well in NO.

At that point I think the decision for Harbaugh is relatively simple as far as what to do, it is just a matter of managing the relationships to make it work. On one hand you have an 8 year veteran who you know what he can do, and on the other you have a 2nd year player who looks as though he can give you everything the 8 year vet can do and you are barely scratching the surface of his potential.

Taking emotion, and how the opportunity came about out of the equation, it is really a simple decision to make for a coach.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Very well put…..

      • Neal says:

Exactly Jack, Also if they waited till next season, they would of had to pay the $7 million bonus to a second string QB.

      • Adam says:

One good game so far: Chicago.

Saints game was a bailout and the Rams game… well whatever.

So essentially we have one game against Chicago (who couldn’t keep up because they were playing Jason Campbell) correct?

Neal, it’s not a bonus, read the contract. That’s his salary next year if he’s on the team in April.

You guys paint yourselves in to a corner with the mediocre games after Chicago because you only have a couple of possibilities and some of them involve other players – which were deemed Alexcuses. So what you’re left with is explaining how ANY QB is not Superman.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Adam,

I disagree with you on the NO game. He played pretty good. Saying the defense bailed him out is a 1/2 truth. The Brooks pick was huge, but there is no way to know what the outcome would have been for the offense if those int’s had not been returned for 6.

Also, many seem to forget that the Saints benefitted greatly from the muffed punt as well. Take the turnovers out of that game and the 49ers still win 17-14.

      • Adam says:

Dunno. Brees doesn’t make mistakes and they win that game is how I saw it.

But yes, it’s a hypothetical, no one knows how that one plays out without the errors but to me it was a dominant defensive performance. Didn’t have the same offensive performance of the playoff game last year.

I suspect what is happening is that teams are figuring CK out, just as we thought they would, thus his numbers are falling. If they take the long ball away from him and can account for him taking off and running? He’s now going to have to think his way down the field. He hasn’t done that real well so far.

I think we can beat Miami but I’m no longer as confident as I was. The run game isn’t the same unless they do something to replace Hunter and the zone D is taking away much of what CK can do.

This will be interesting. We’ve seen that our coaches can be ‘out-gamed’ and that we still have a few nagging issues with receivers and the O-line.

But… again, I do expect to win.

        Adam.

We would need to give a 1 million dollar bonus whether he makes the team or not. No way are they going to give the future jouneyman second stringer a six or 7 million dollar salary.

      • Adam says:

It’s not a signing bonus. $1 mil in 2013 is guaranteed, regardless as part of this year’s deal. So he gets that whether he’s dropped prior to April 1.

The $7.5 mil is the salary for 2013 if he were to be on the roster after April 1.

I fully expect they will trade him for a 2014 pick. It makes it easier to keep the defense intact. They can take Goldson off the franchise tag, for example.

His salary is so reasonable and his numbers are so good that he will have no problem landing on a needy team.

The Niners are smart with their contracts. If you look at the Jets, for example, they can’t get rid of Sanchez even if they wanted to because they’ve bound him over for another year. Big mistake. He’s a sunk cost for next year whether they play him or not.

      • Adam says:

*So he gets that whether or not he’s dropped prior to April 1.

Actually when you read this: http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/matt-maiocco/full-details-alex-smiths-contract
…it looks like by benching Smith what they have done is to cheat him out of incentives.

Just like every other corporation, it’s a cost-cutting move. :P

I have a problem with all these chiefs running the offense. Geyst, Morton, Roman, and Harbaugh. At least on the surface it explains a lot of the strange offensive play calling and why I continue to shake my head. It also explains why the Niners seem to be slow to adjust to the game as it unfolds. I do think there is an excellent play book but I am begining to wonder if its being used to its fullist potential. I cant seem to place a finger on what continues to ail the offense regardless of who the QB is/was. When this offense is in sync its fun offense to watch and cant be stopped. Problem is it just seems inconsistant and once again thats been all season long. The Niners got four games to figure it out, sure hope they do. There is little room for error from here on out.

    • Jack Hammer says:

Having various position coaches assist with the gameplan prep is not something that only the 49ers do. It is more the norm than the exception.

Again, this offense is one of only three in the league that is averaging 6 or more yards per play. They are doing some things right.

    Under

I think that a lot of what we all are negatively experiencing is the constant turnover of QB’s. Each time you change, it involves the entire offensive team changing because not every QB brings the same gifts to the party. CK brings more run potential possibly, but ALMOST every head coach has been quoted as saying that’s not the duty of the QB. Remember how Joe Theisman’s career ended. He DOES throw lazers, but so did George Mira. Lazers are not a catchable pass if they’re not on the body. If they’re where the receiver has to extend for, it’s a low percentage reception. Alex throws a much more catchable ball like Joe Montana and Steve Spurrier did. Dick Nolan liked lazers. Alex, probably because of his experience brings more stability, but not less passion to the game. I personally would like to see more of a passing game, take the handcuffs off; but that doesn’t seem to fit what coach Harbaugh wants. It’s going to be an interesting remaining four games……

    • bayareafanatic says:

Another guy y that’s smarter than Harbaugh

      • Prime Time says:

Keep sticking to the Harbaugh cannot make a bad decision card Lameareafanatic! The decision is fallin apart already. You will be tooting your horn after MIA, maybe? But after that the test results will be in!

Unless CK an JH can turn CK from a running QB to a well rounded QB in 4 more games, it will be a lost season. Keep in mind, how long did it take Steve Young to convert?

      • Jack Hammer says:

It took until Plummer, Norton, and Sanders joined before Young figured it out…

  26. Adam says:

    Meanwhile on Harbaugh World:

“The penalties he’s gotten have been after the whistle,” Harbaugh said. “So that’s the main thing – pulling off the hit when the quarterback’s sliding, leaving it when the whistle stops. But he’s done a great job. There haven’t been any helmet-to-helmet penalties from Dashon. His technique and ability really have been outstanding.”

Safety Dashon Goldson was fined $7,875 for hitting Rams quarterback Sam Bradford as he slid in the fourth quarter.

Goldson has been penalized six times for a team-high 87 yards. All but one of his penalties have been personal-foul calls.
