Harbaugh: “For the most part it’s the same offense” with Kaepernick or Alex Smith at QB

SANTA CLARA — Here is what Jim Harbaugh said about the evolution of the 49ers offense at his Monday press conference.

Q: Frank Gore was saying that the offense with Kaepernick is really the same, just you do more read option. Is it essentially the same?

HARBAUGH: That’s one take. I think for the most part it’s the same offense, don’t know that it’s dramatically different. I’d concur with Frank.

ME: You used the full-house Pistol formation about 17 times yesterday. What do you like about that particular formation, with three players surrounding Kaepernick in the backfield?

HARBAUGH: We thought in this particular game that it was a way for us to get a hat on a hat. A way to balance off Miami’s defense and what they had shown to do because it is a balanced formation. Allows you to go in any direction and throw the ball. It was a good base formation for us in this game.

Q: Often you’ll have a Jumbo formation with offensive linemen Daniel Kilgore and Leonard Davis and they’ll be on one side and then you’ll often run to that side. Your run game is known for its creativity and keeping defenses off balance, but that seems to be an exception. Do you have any thoughts on that? Could you be setting something up for later in the year?

HARBAUGH: Absolutely, anything’s possible off of that. And we did get stopped on the 3rd-and-1. We just didn’t have all 11 guys doing… We had 10. Ten guys did exactly what they should have, but we didn’t get one more down block that we needed. So, you don’t like to see that happen.

  1. Joe says:

Put AS back in as the starter. Where is the hot hand Harbaugh was talking about?

    • msclemons67 says:

He’s gone Joe. You need to come to grips with your grief.

    • 23jordan/ says:

I agree Joe. However I’m worried about Smiths hand still being hot. He’s been holding that stupid helmet in his hand for 5 weeks. in second thought, I’d like for him to stay exactly where he’s been. It’s safer for him and the 49ers Super Bowl aspirations!

    • Neal says:

      Say it ain’t so Joe.

    • drsgrosse says:

I like Kaep, but to date, the Niners are a better team with Smith at QB.

If your read Lowell Cohns article after the Miami game you can see the bias. It is the same bias that Grant has. If AS had those numbers there would be a diatribe about sending him somewhere else. A fumble, numerous sacks, some bad passes, some bad runs and yes one 50 yarder, and missing some open receivers. Yet now you read about the offensive line being at fault and all the other excuses to back up their judgement that CK7 is the saviour. I am not in either camp I would just like to have an honest cretique of the players and not what I have been reading.

  2. AES* says:

C’mon MSC. Ok, I really wiffed on the AS becoming an all-pro this season (lol).

Sometimes my optimism and over-top-positive attitude gets the best of me. After AS’ playoff games last year, I thought that with another season under Harbaugh’ wings he could blow-it-up. Well, I beg you don’t hold it against me (lol).

That’s why I’m trying to contain my excitement regarding CK7.
But if he plays lights-out against the Patriots I’m going bonkers!

    • msclemons67 says:

Haha AES. Alex was very efficient in this offense. CK is equally efficient and adds a bit of explosiveness.

With Harbaugh at the helm I think any QB could do well. They could bring in Rex Grossman and do ok. This coaching staff is solid.

      • drsgrosse says:

Kaep has been better than Alex throwing the ball, but Alex has been much better at calling the plays at the line. Running backs have averaged 4.2 yards per carry with Kaep in there and 5.6 with Smith.

I think we need Kaep and his big play potential vs NE, but vs SEA, with the division probably on the line, Smith seems the better choice.

      • Sean in Canada says:

Calling plays at the line, audibles and just reading the D is all gonna come from experience. Unfortunate that CK is learning this stuff in the middle of a fight to get into the playoffs. All in all he’s been fine, not lights out like the anti Smith crew would have you believe and not terrible as the pro Smith crew says.

  3. AES says:

    Whoa….. Grossman?
That would be a modern day Christmas miracle (lol).

  4. Nick says:

They pretty much just run the ball anyway.
Prob could have won the game with Akers handing the ball of sixty times in a row.

  5. I missed the toilet and Kaepped all over the place says:

    Kaep rhymes with crap

    • Hmmm says:

Exactly what he will be like against the smart ass Patriots. Their 25th D ranking is very deceiving especially when they make teams throw ints and fumbles. They let the QB air it out so they can get the turnovers. The Patriots are 5-1 at home. The Arizona game could have been theirs if they didn’t miss the field goal. And Kolbs was a good game manger that game not throwing ints or fumbling the ball. So far Kaep fumbled every game he played. If they stop Gore like they did with Foster, Kaep will have to air it out and he will be looking worst than Luck. Oh and have the 49ers played a freezing mid December game since Harbaugh took over yet? The coldest game was probably the Baltimore game on Thanksgiving. Having a first year starting kid from Nevada doesn’t help either. inexperienced QB/rookies=Fumbles. Cold weather=Fumbles. QB running the ball=Fumbles. Harbaugh can out smart most of the coaches in the NFL but how the hell are you going to out smart the Belichick.

      Most Possible out come:

      1. Kaep can’t handle it, Gore can’t get production going, Tom Brady plays like he did against the Texans. 49ers lose
2.Kaep gets knocked out or benched, Smith comes in and who knows what would happen…
3.Kaep plays so-so less than 2 turnovers, D shuts the Patriots O out. Scores 2+tds on the D or special team. 49ers wins.

      Unlikely:
      1. Kaep plays lights out, rapes the Patriots D with 3+ tds, Gore big game, 49ers D did their job. Brady plays like Brady. 49ers wins a close one.
      2. Kaep played well, Gore played well Patriots D and O fell asleep.
      49ers wins
      3. Of course some how the 49ers ties with the Patriots.

      • 23jordan/ says:

The NFC west will be 3-1 against the weak azz Patriots because we play defense. There is nothing deceiving about having the 25the ranked defense in the league. You are what you are. We are going to run over a over your pathetic defense. Our d line is gonna beat beat Brady like a step child. We know he doesn’t like to be hit. Aldon Smith is gonna kick Brady’s azz all night. f you thought Seattle hit Brady hard. Watch what we do.
