Harbaugh is sticking with Akers for now

SANTA CLARA – Here is what Jim Harbaugh said about David Akers at his Monday press conference.

Q: What’s David Akers’ status? Do you expect him to be kicking on Sunday for the 49ers?

HARBAUGH: “I do. We’ll see what his health status is this week, but all implications are he’s working through something. He’s kicked well in practice, he’s kicked well in games. I thought the one he missed in this ballgame was well hit, it just didn’t go in.”

Q: How is he handling the tough season?

HARBAUGH: “As far as his mindset – he’s a professional. He’s been in every situation imaginable. He takes responsibility. Obviously, it’s his job to put it through the uprights.”

Akers has missed nine of the 30 field goals he’s attempted this season, which means he’s missed 30 percent of his kicks – tied for the worst percentage in the NFL.

They need to make a change.

  2. Stan says:

If he could,Harbaugh would say Akers made the kick and its the jive turkeys who say he didn’t. No real opinion ever comes out of the man.

  3. OpenMinded says:

Better look out, Akers. Carlos Rogers will be talking to the media later this week about how when he played for the Redskins, everyone on the Eagles told him Akers stunk and how Akers has gotten more chances than anyone should ever get. Great teammates do that, you know.

It’s a business and Akers was money last year. This year, not so much. Another nice guy bites the dust. Bring up the next guy. Preferably one with a lot of upside that we can be proud of when he screws up like Colin did yesterday. I’m starting to blend in with the sharks around here. I’m finally getting it!

      Good catch, OpenMinded…LOL

I thought I was the only one that noted Rodgers lack of profesionalism. Some noted Staley was smiling/laughing at a botched play, If that proved out to be true that would be equal as bad as Rodgers. I doubt Staley was mocking a botched play but…

You can never take anything from a face being made on the sideline, way too much goes on to be able to tell what someone is thinking by a camera shot.

He was probably smiling at the all around absurdity of the play, that was bush league all the way around, terrible call, terrible decision to let it happen and terrible execution.

Before the 2011 season, you Oregoniner, called it an 11-5 season. What does your crystal ball tell you this year?

need a table showing att/fg from 30 in, 40 in, 50 in, 50 out, to see were the money kick line of demarcation is…

i think 40 and in Akers is still money….so it could be just a mechanical thing 40 and out and if his hip is a problem and is healing going forward should be OK….

and the whole point of having a change at QB is to eliminate the aker effect….

  5. Mr. Automatic says:

I don’t know that you can make a change right now, considering available options but, surely, playing conservatively for longish field goals should be out.

  6. pkny says:

Andy lee could be a good kicker if given a chance.

  7. La-La Land says:

Has someone asked Harbaugh if one of those Budweiser placekicking horses are available?

  8. John says:

If there were better options available then Akers would have been released today.

  9. harbinger says:

They need to call a couple of slants around the ST Louis 44 yl. Then they can get Akers within his 40 yard limit as it currently stands. Then they need to find the correct hash from which this left-footed kicker will make his attempt. They were crossing him up on the 50 yarder.
